Causative Cyberattacks on Online Learning-Based Automated Demand Response Systems

Power utilities are adopting Automated Demand Response (ADR) to replace the costly fuel-fired generators and to preempt congestion during peak electricity demand. Similarly, third-party Demand Response (DR) aggregators are leveraging controllable small-scale electrical loads to provide on-demand grid support services to the utilities. Some aggregators and utilities have started employing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to learn the energy usage patterns of electricity consumers and use this knowledge to design optimal DR incentives. Such AI frameworks use open communication channels between the utility/aggregator and the DR customers, which are vulnerable to causative data integrity cyberattacks. This paper explores vulnerabilities of AI-based DR learning and designs a data-driven attack strategy informed by DR data collected from the New York University (NYU) campus buildings. The case study demonstrates the feasibility and effects of maliciously tampering with (i) real-time DR incentives, (ii) DR event data sent to DR customers, and (iii) responses of DR customers to the DR incentives.

OpenADR and Agreement Audit Architecture for a Complete Cycle of a Flexibility Solution

Nowadays, the presence of renewable generation systems and mobile loads (i.e., electric vehicle) spread throughout the distribution network is increasing. The problem is that this type of system introduces an added difficulty since they present a strong dependence on the meteorology and the mobility needs of the users. This problem forces the distribution system operators to seek tools that make it possible to balance the relationship between consumption and generation. In this sense, automated demand response systems are an appropriate solution that allow the operator to request specific reductions in customers’ consumption, offering a discount to the customer and avoiding network congestion. This paper analyzes the implementation and architecture of a demand response solution based on OpenADR standard and its possible integration with a building management system through a use case. As will be analyzed, a key part of the architecture is the measurement system based on smart meters acting as sensors. This is the base of the auditing system which makes it possible to verify compliance with the consumption reduction agreements. Additionally, this study is completed with a parallel auditing system which makes it possible to verify compliance with the consumption reduction agreements. All of the proposed demand response cycle is implemented as a proof of concept in a classroom in the Escuela Politécnica Superior at the University of Seville, which makes it possible to identify the advantages of this architecture in the ambit of connection between distribution network and buildings.

Automated demand response system in lighting for optimization of electricity cost

Daylighting is an important factor in improving visual comfort and energy efficiency. Lighting control using daylighting can reduce energy consumption in buildings. This thesis proposes an automatic demand response system for lighting based on wireless sensor networks (WSN) in order to reduce the peak electricity demand according to the stage of electricity rate with real-time pricing (RTP), time of use pricing (TOUP), and critical peak pricing (CPP). The proposed system automatically controls the slat angle of the venetian blind with a cut-off angle according to the altitude of the sun, automatically executing light dimming according to measured current luminance to remove an unpleasant glare caused by daylighting. The target illuminance of area at this time is set at a minimum illuminance required for the work execution in the office during the time zone where the electricity load is high to save the lighting energy cost, while a maximum illuminance is set during the time zone where the electricity load is low according to the real-time electricity pricing stages obtained through the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) in order to improve the work efficiency of the occupants. In this study, two testbeds having the same environments, as well as a control system targeting a fixed illuminance per price system, were established. The illuminance energy consumption and cost were then measured and the effect of the proposed illuminance system was evaluated.

Abstract Technology to optimize and utilize the use and supply of the electric power between consumer and supplier has been on the rise among the smart grid power market network in electric power demand management based on the Internet. Open Automated Demand Response system protocol, which can deliver Demand Response needed in electric power demand management to electricity supplier, system supplier and even the user is openADR 2.0b. This paper used the most credible, cosmopolitanly proliferated EPRI open source and analysed the variety of security vulnerability that developed VEN and VTN system may have. Using the simulator for attacking openADR protocol, the VEN/VTN system that has been implemented as EPRI open source was conducted to attack in a variety of ways. As a result of the analysis, we were able to get the results that the VEN/VTN system has security vulnerabilities to the parameter tampering attacks and service flow falsification attack. In conclusion, if you want to implement the openADR2.0b protocol system in the open or two-way communication environment smart grid network, considering a variety of security vulnerability should be sure to seek security technology and services.

Future evolution of automated demand response system in smart grid for low-carbon economy

Smart grid construction is an important carrier and an effective way to promote the development of low-carbon economy. Demand response (DR) is commonly regarded as an important core technology in smart grid field, and it reflects the flexible and interactive features of the core business in smart electricity. It is the developing direction of automated demand response (ADR) technology, and its main features are the standardization of information exchange, together with the intelligence of decision-making and the automation of implementations. ADR technology can improve the efficiency of the whole power system and enhance the ability to accept new energy sources. This paper analyzes the role of demand response in improving efficiency and low-carbon energy saving power systems. The automated demand response system architecture is investigated, and the ADR roadmap of commercial/industrial and residential customer is proposed. The key technologies for ADR system are analyzed, including demand response strategy, information exchanging model, measurement and verification techniques, and multi-agent scheduling techniques. To ensure the interoperability between the grid side and the user side, the ADR business in smart grid user interface standards is concluded to support further demand side management project.

With the shift of the energy paradigm from supply side management to demand side management, demand resource management and demand response plays an important role in the energy industry. As a consequency, a lot of researches have been done to provide a suitable demand response system. However, most of the demand response systems are based on the propriety products that cannot be modified. In this paper, we are proposing an automated demand response system using an EnerNOC provided open source code. We implemented the demand response server (VTN) and demand response client (VEN), and validated the OpenADR2.0 compliances using the open source code. We also used an Arduino microcontoller to demonstrate the communication schemes to control various devices.

Field demonstration of automated demand response for both winter and summer events in large buildings in the Pacific Northwest

There are growing strains on the electric grid as cooling peaks grow and equipment ages. Increased penetration of renewables on the grid is also straining electricity supply systems and the need for flexible demand is growing. This paper summarizes results of a series of field test of automated demand response systems in large buildings in the Pacific Northwest. The objective of the research was two fold. One objective was to evaluate the use demand response automation technologies. A second objective was to evaluate control strategies that could change the electric load shape in both winter and summer conditions. Winter conditions focused on cold winter mornings, a time when the electric grid is often stressed. The summer test evaluated DR strategies in the afternoon. We found that we could automate both winter and summer control strategies with the open automated demand response communication standard. The buildings were able to provide significant demand response in both winter and summer events.
