Introduction: Lateral tendinosis of the elbow, sometimes called tennis elbow, refers to the degenerative process in the common source of the extended group of forearm muscles. In orthopedic clinics, it is the most prevalent cause of elbow discomfort and pain. The condition caused by repeated muscular motions is a typical cause of elbow discomfort.
 Objectives: To assess the clinical and functional outcomes of autologous blood injection for the treatment of tennis elbow.
 Methodology: This is a hospital based cross-sectional study, conducted in Birat Medical College teaching hospital. Here, the patients diagnosed with a Tennis elbow in orthopedic OPD during the study duration of September 2020 to August 2021 were included in the study. Total 93 samples were studied. Two ml of the patient's blood has withdrawn from the right antecubital vein and has been injected around the affected common extensor tendon origin. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 23.
 Results: Total Ninety Three (59% females, 41% male) patients were treated with the diagnosed concerned disease. The mean age of the patients was 45.39 ± 10.109 years. At the end of the trial, 90% of the patients were satisfied fully with the treatment. The overall performance of the regression model is significant in all scenarios.
 Conclusion: Given the satisfactory results, the blood injection in question can be deemed a suitable medication alternative to the conventional therapy.

Clinical and radiological outcome of arthrocentesis followed by autologous blood injection for treatment of chronic recurrent temporomandibular joint dislocation.

BackgroundThis study was conducted to evaluate the functional outcome and MRI findings of arthrocentsis followed by autologous blood injection (ABI) into the joint space for management of chronic recurrent TMJ dislocation.Material and MethodsTotal ten patients with bilateral chronic recurrent condylar dislocation were included in the study. Arthrocentesis of both TMJ was performed on each patient, followed by the injection of 2 ml of autologous blood into the superior joint compartment and 1 ml onto the outer surface of the joint capsule. Preoperative and postoperative assessment included; thorough history, clinical examination of TMJ, maximal mouth opening, frequency of dislocation, TMJ radiographs (open and closed mouth position), MRI, recurrence and presence of facial nerve paralysis.ResultsAt the end of 3 months follow-up 8 patients (80%) had successful outcome with no further episodes of dislocation, whereas two patients reported with recurrence. Post-operative MRI showed significant improvement after ABI, compared to pre-operative MRI. There were no degenerative changes to the bony and soft tissue components of TMJ.ConclusionsABI is a simple, safe, minimally invasive and cost-effective technique for treatment of chronic recurrent TMJ dislocation. MRI evaluation showed an improvement in the anatomical and spatial relationship of the osseous and soft tissue components of the TMJ. Autologous blood injection for treatment of chronic recurrent TMJ dislocation: is it successful? Is it safe enough? A systematic review.

The purpose of this article is to review the English literature about the efficacy and safety of autologous blood injection in treating patients suffering from chronic recurrent temporomandibular joint dislocation. In this article, we highlight the key trials and recent directions about this modality and discuss about the mechanism, advantages, and disadvantages of this approach. A literature search was performed using PubMed, Medline, and Ovid Medline databases to identify articles reporting on the injection of autologous blood for treatment of chronic recurrent dislocation of temporomandibular joint. Other references cited in the retrieved reports, as well as the "related articles" tool in PubMed Medline, were also checked to improve the search and, if relevant, were included in the study. The search was restricted to articles published in the English language. Seven studies meeting the inclusion criteria were reviewed. The selected articles included four prospective clinical trials and three case report articles. There are a few articles about the clinical use of autologous blood for treating patients with chronic recurrent temporomandibular joint dislocation. Reviewing of the literature shows that there are successful results about this modality, but there are still some concerns about it in terms of the effect of the injected blood on the articular cartilage and formation of fibrous or bony ankylosis.

Republished research: Impact of autologous blood injections in treatment of mid-portion Achilles tendinopathy: double blind randomised controlled trial.

Do peritendinous autologous blood injections improve pain and function in people with mid-portion Achilles tendinopathy? The administration of two unguided peritendinous autologous blood injections one month apart, in addition to a standardised eccentric training programme, provides no additional benefit in the treatment of mid-portion Achilles tendinopathy. Several studies have suggested that injection of autologous blood can help in the treatment of various tendinopathies. There is a lack of high quality evidence showing relevant benefit for autologous blood injections, particularly in the management of mid-portion Achilles tendinopathy. We found no additional reduction in pain or improvement in function when these injections were combined with an eccentric calf training programme.

Considerations regarding autologus blood injection for tennis elbow tendinopathy.

Dear Editor, We read with interest the article by Karimi Mobarakeh et al. (1) titled as “Autologous Blood Injection for Treatment of Tennis Elbow”. We would like to congratulate the authors for taking up such a study. However, we have several considerations regarding this manuscript: What was the number of patients who received the local steroid injections before being in the study and also, what was the duration from the last steroid injection before patients were given the autologous blood injection. After injection, the authors state that “Immobilization via a long arm cast was done for 3 weeks”. Unfortunately, the authors have omitted to mention the reasons leading to cast immobilization. Also, there is no information concerning the occurrence of post injection stiffness of elbow when a 3 weeks long arm cast immobilization was maintained. In the Results column, the manuscript states that “The mean duration of symptoms was 7.9 ± 1.3 months. Table 1 shows results of NPS and VAS before and 1, 3 and 6 months after ABI”. However, there is no table available to support the results. Furthermore, in the results column, the authors say that “The level of patient satisfaction on Verhaar scale is shown in Figure 1; 84% of patients showed a high level of satisfaction at the end of the study. None required a second injection, although some of them were obliged to change their activities”. However, no Figure is shown to justify such data. The authors have mentioned that their results were comparable to other studies. However, the studies mentioned in the reference column had used ultrasound guided autologous blood injection for tennis elbow (2). Only one study from the references has used autologous blood injection similar to the present study (3). We would rather suggest the authors to compare their results with comparable studies to justify their implication for the healthcare policy making. We hope our suggestions will be taken with a positive note and the revised manuscript with all missing Figures and Tables will be made available.

Autologous Blood Injection for Treatment of Tennis Elbow

BackgroundTennis elbow (TE) is a common myotendinosis. It was first described by Runge in 1873; different modes of treatment are used in management of TE.ObjectivesThis study aimed to report the results of autologous blood injection (ABI) in the treatment of TE.Materials and MethodsA prospective case study was performed to evaluate the results of ABI in the management of TE. The level of pain based on Nirschl phase scale (NPS) and a visual analogue scale (VAS) was calculated before and 1, 3 and 6 months after injection; then satisfaction was assessed.ResultsTwenty-nine patients with diagnosed TE were treated by ABI (24% males, 76 % female). The mean age of the patients was 44.1 ± 5.2 years. The level of pain on VAS decreased from 6.46 ± 2.08 to 0.54 ± 0.7 (P=0.001) and on NPS from 6.15 ± 1.48 to 0.54 ± 0.76 (P = 0.001) 6 months after treatment. At the end of the study, 84% of patients expressed a high level of satisfaction.ConclusionsGiven the acceptable outcomes, autologous blood injection can be considered a good treatment option for TE when traditional treatment has fails.

Short-Term Results of Autologous Blood Injection for Treatment of Habitual TMJ Luxation

Many surgical and nonsurgical methods for the treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) hypermobility have been published. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results after autologous blood injection in and around the TMJ for the treatment of habitual luxation. Twenty-five patients were diagnosed as having habitual TMJ luxation and treated with autologous blood injection into the upper joint space and around the joint capsule (group A). A control group of 15 patients with the same diagnosis were subjected to physiotherapy with muscular exercise (group B). Patients in group A were reevaluated 3 months after treatment and those in group B were reevaluated after 3 months of physiotherapy. A statistically significant reduction in maximal mouth opening and TMJ sounds was noted only in group A, whereas the reduction for group B was minimal. These measurements show that intraauricular and periauricular autologous blood injection results in remission of signs and symptoms of TMJ luxation in the short term.
