A prospective randomized controlled study of neurofeedback combined with learning style profile intervention training in children with high-functioning autism

To explore the application of neurofeedback (NFB) combined with learning style profile (LSP) intervention training in children with high-functioning autism (HFA). A prospective study was conducted to select 86 children with HFA admitted to the hospital from February 2022 to February 2024. They were divided into two groups according to the random number table method, with 43 cases in each group. In this double-blind study, the control group was given LSP intervention training, and the observation group was given NFB intervention on the basis of the treatment used in the control group. Both groups were treated for 6 months. The scores of Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC), Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS), and Pediatric Quality of Life (PedsQL) were compared between the two groups before intervention and at 6 months after intervention. The relationship of PedsQL score with ABC, ATEC, and SRS scores was analyzed in children with HFA. After 6 months of intervention, the scores of ABC, ATEC, and SRS in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group, while the PedsQL score in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.05). The PedsQL score was negatively correlated with the ABC, ATEC, and SRS scores in children with HFA (r=-0.238, -0.381, -0.219 respectively; P<0.001). NFB combined with LSP can effectively improve the clinical symptoms and social ability, control the development of the disease, and improve the quality of life in children with HFA.

Thumbtack needle at front-mu points for abnormal behavior in children with autism spectrum disorders

To compare the clinical effect of thumbtack needle at front-mu points combined with conventional rehabilitation training and simple conventional rehabilitation training in the treatment of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). A total of 40 children with ASD were randomly divided into a combination group (20 cases, 3 cases dropped out) and a conventional rehabilitation group (20 cases, 3 cases dropped out). Conventional rehabilitation training i.e. language-cognition training and comprehensive education training was adopted in the conventional rehabilitation group, once a day, 5 days a week. On the basis of the treatment in the conventional rehabilitation group, thumbtack needle was applied at Zhongwan (CV 12), bilateral Tianshu (ST 25) and Guanyuan (CV 4) in the combination group, the needles were retained for 3 days each time, 3-day interval was taken between each treatment, for 5 times per month. One-month treatment was as one course and a total of 3 courses were required in both groups, with 10-day break between each course. Before and after treatment, the scores of autism behavior checklist (ABC), childhood autism rating scale (CARS), TCM spleen-stomach symptoms and Achenbach child behavior checklist (CBCL) were observed, and the serum ratio of glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid (Glu/GABA) was measured. After treatment, the scores of ABC, CARS and CBCL were decreased compared with those before treatment (P<0.05, P<0.01) in both groups, the TCM spleen-stomach symptoms score was decreased compared with that before treatment (P<0.05) in the combination group; the changes in the scores of ABC, CARS, TCM spleen-stomach symptoms and CBCL, as well as the serum Glu/GABA in the combination group were lager than those in the conventional rehabilitation group (P<0.05, P<0.01). Both thumbtack needle at front-mu points combined with conventional rehabilitation training and simple conventional rehabilitation training can effectively treat ASD, the combination treatment has superior effect on improving the abnormal behavior, spleen-stomach symptoms and balance of nerve impulse and inhibition.

Neurodevelopment and cerebral blood flow in children aged 2-6 years with autism spectrum disorder

To investigate the neurodevelopmental characteristics of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), analyze the correlation between neurodevelopmental indicators and cerebral blood flow (CBF), and explore the potential mechanisms of neurodevelopment in ASD children. A retrospective study was conducted on 145 children aged 2-6 years with newly-diagnosed ASD. Scores from the Gesell Developmental Diagnosis Scale and the Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) and CBF results were collected to compare gender differences in the development of children with ASD and analyze the correlation between CBF and neurodevelopmental indicators. Fine motor and personal-social development quotient in boys with ASD were lower than those in girls with ASD (P<0.05). Gross motor development quotient in ASD children was negatively correlated with CBF in the left frontal lobe (r=-0.200, P=0.016), right frontal lobe (r=-0.279, P=0.001), left parietal lobe (r=-0.208, P=0.012), and right parietal lobe (r=-0.187, P=0.025). The total ABC score was positively correlated with CBF in the left amygdala (r=0.295, P<0.001). Early intervention training should pay attention to gender and developmental structural characteristics for precise intervention in ASD children. CBF has the potential to become a biological marker for assessing the severity of ASD.

Decreased brain iron deposition based on quantitative susceptibility mapping correlates with reduced neurodevelopmental status in children with autism spectrum disorder.

To investigate potential correlations between the susceptibility values of certain brain regions and the severity of disease or neurodevelopmental status in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), 18 ASD children and 15 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. The neurodevelopmental status was assessed by the Gesell Developmental Schedules (GDS) and the severity of the disease was evaluated by the Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC). Eleven brain regions were selected as regions of interest and the susceptibility values were measured by quantitative susceptibility mapping. To evaluate the diagnostic capacity of susceptibility values in distinguishing ASD and HC, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was computed. Pearson and Spearman partial correlation analysis were used to depict the correlations between the susceptibility values, the ABC scores, and the GDS scores in the ASD group. ROC curves showed that the susceptibility values of the left and right frontal white matter had a larger area under the curve in the ASD group. The susceptibility value of the right globus pallidus was positively correlated with the GDS-fine motor scale score. These findings indicated that the susceptibility value of the right globus pallidus might be a viable imaging biomarker for evaluating the neurodevelopmental status of ASD children.

Problems and innovative approaches in student management in universities: focusing on students with autism as the core

Background Students with autism have unique characteristics in social interaction, emotional management, and learning styles, which may be overlooked in the larger environment of universities and affect their learning and life. Therefore, from a psychological perspective, exploring the problems and innovative approaches in student management in universities, with a focus on autistic students, has important theoretical and practical significance.Subjects and MethodsThe subjects of this study were 206 college students studying at a certain university, all of whom had varying degrees of autism. These students were equally divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group conducted innovative management based on the management innovation pathways collected through expert surveys, while the control group only managed in traditional ways. The management experiment lasted for 60 days. Before and after the experiment, each group of students needs to be tested with the Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC).ResultsThe experimental results showed that there was no significant difference in any baseline data between the two groups before the start of the experiment, and there was no significant difference in ABC scores. After the experiment, the total ABC scores of the experimental group and control group students were 33.6 ± 2.9 and 42.2 ± 3.1, respectively, with lower scores and significant differences in the experimental group.ConclusionsThe expert group members found that managing college students through multiple innovative university management methods that focus on students and balance humanization and institutionalization can help improve the symptoms of students with autism.

Objective: The purpose of this research is to investigate sleep and gastrointestinal problems in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their relationship with each other, autism severity and problematic behavior. Material and Methods: The children who were admitted to outpatient clinics of child psychiatry at our hospital in a 3-months period and had diagnosis of ASD according to DSM-5 were included. The parents filled Aberrant Behavior Checklist (AbBC), Rome-3 Diagnostic Questionnaire for Pediatric Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders Parent Report Form (QPGS-RIII), Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) and sociodemographic data form. The clinician applied Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). Results: Ninety-seven children with ASD were included. According to QPGS-RIII, 38.1% of the cases had probable functional gastrointestinal problems. Those were 26.8% (n=26) functional constipation, 8.2% (n=8) nonretentive fecal incontinence, 2.1% (n=2) aerofaji, 3.1% (n=3) rumination syndrome, 4.1% (n=4) irritable bowel syndrome, 1% (n=1) functional abdominal pain syndrome, 1% (n=1) functional dyspepsia, 3.1% (n=3) functional abdominal pain, 1% cyclic vomiting and 1% (n=1) abdominal migraine. According to CSHQ 58.8% of the cases had sleep problems. ASD patients with functional gastrointestinal problems, had higher total scores of CSHQ, ABC and AbBC, compared to children with no functional gastrointestinal problems. Conclusion: Our findings revealed that frequency of gastrointestinal and sleep problems were high in children with ASD. It is appropriate to evaluate patients with ASD in terms of gastrointestinal and sleep problems especially if behavioral problems accompanies. And treating gastrointestinal and sleep problems might decrease challenging behaviors that seen in ASD.

Association of feeding patterns in infancy with later autism symptoms and neurodevelopment: a national multicentre survey

BackgroundWe aimed to compare differences in infant feeding patterns (breastfeeding and complementary food supplementation) between children with the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and typically developing (TD) children through a multicentre study. The relationship between these patterns and later core symptoms and neurodevelopment in children with ASD was also investigated.MethodsWe analysed breastfeeding and complementary feeding patterns in 1389 children with ASD and 1190 TD children. The Children Neuropsychological and Behavior Scale-Revision 2016 (CNBS-R2016) was used to assess neurodevelopmental levels. The Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS), Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), and ASD Warning Behavior Subscale of the CNBS-R2016 were used to assess ASD symptoms.ResultsChildren with ASD had a shorter breastfeeding duration in infancy (8 (3–12) months vs. 10 (6–14) months, P < 0.001), later introduction of complementary foods (P < 0.001), and poorer acceptance of complementary foods (P < 0.001) than TD children. Total ABC and CARS scores were lower in the group of children with ASD who had been breastfed for 12 months or more than in the group who had been breastfed for less than 6 months. Children with ASD who were given complementary food after 6 months had lower general quotient (GQ), adaptive ability, fine motor and language scores than those who were given complementary food within 4–6 months. Children with ASD with poor acceptance of complementary foods had higher ABC and SRS scores and lower gross motor scores than those who had good acceptance.ConclusionsChildren with ASD have a shorter duration of breastfeeding, a later introduction of complementary foods, and poorer acceptance of complementary foods than TD children. These feeding patterns may be related to the symptoms and growth of children with ASD. The research suggests that continued breastfeeding for longer than 12 months may be beneficial in reducing ASD symptoms and that infants who have difficulty introducing complementary foods should be followed up for neurodevelopment.Trial registrationThe ethics committee of the Children’s Hospital of Chongqing Medical University approved the study. Acupuncture for children with autism spectrum disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The aim of this study was to assess the efficiency and safety of acupuncture in core symptomatic improvement of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We searched the following databases: Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, Medline, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, Chinese Science and Technology Periodical (VIP) and Chinese Biological Medicine (CBM), from 1 January 2012 to 25 September 2022. The Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), and Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC) were adopted as outcome indicators. Three reviewers independently assessed the risk of bias (ROB) and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE)assessment. Utilizing Review Manager (RevMan) 5.3 and Stata 12.0, data were analyzed. A total of 38 trials were included, and 2862 participants participated in qualitative synthesis and meta-analysis. Only 1 trial was assessed as having a low ROB, and 37 trials were assessed as having an overall high ROB. The quality of evidence for most indicators were considered very low by the GRADE criteria. The results showed that acupuncture groups might have a higher clinical effective rate than nonacupuncture groups (relative risk [RR] = 1.33,95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.25-1.41; heterogeneity: x2=18.15, P = .64, I2 = 0%). Regarding changes in ABC scores, the acupuncture groups might exhibit greater decrease than nonacupuncture groups (MMD = -6.06, 95%CI = -7.25 to -4.87, P < .00001; heterogeneity: x2 =73.37, P = .03, I2 = 77%). In terms of changes in CARS score, acupuncture group may benefit more than nonacupuncture group (MMD = -3.93, 95%CI = 4.90 to -2.95, P < .00001; heterogeneity: x2=234.47, P < .00001, I2 = 90%). Additionally, in terms of ATEC score, acupuncture groups showed more benefit than nonacupuncture groups (MMD = -10.24, 95%CI = -13.09 to -7.38, P < .00001; heterogeneity: x2=45.74, P = .04, I2 = 85%). Both subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis are existing heterogeneity. Only 1 RCT study involved adverse events with mild symptoms that did not interfere with treatment and evaluation. Children with ASD may benefit from acupuncture because of its effectiveness and safety. Nevertheless, given the low quality of the evidence for the assessed outcomes and the high ROB of analyzed trials, the results should be regarded with caution.

Analysis of salivary steroid hormones in boys with autism spectrum disorder

BackgroundAutism spectrum disorders (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with high incidence rate and difficult diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to explore whether salivary cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and pregnenolone can be used as biomarkers of ASD children.MethodsThe saliva samples of 55 boys with ASD were collected as the experimental group, and the saliva samples of 24 neurotypical boys were collected as the control group. The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS), Repetitive Behavior Scale (RBS) were used to assess the severity of symptoms in boys with ASD. Cortisol, DHEA and pregnenolone concentrations in saliva were measured using an ABSSCIEX QTRAP® 6500 + LC/MS/MS system. SPSS 23.0 was used for statistical analysis. Comparisons between the two groups which conform to normal distribution were performed by T-test, and those which don’t conform to normal distribution were performed by Mann–Whitney U test. Correlation analysis between two variables was performed using Spearman's correlation analysis. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis was performed to evaluate the discriminatory sensitivity of each hormone between ASD and normal control groups. Logistic regression models were used to analyze whether DHEA and salivary pregnenolone can be used as a biomarker of ASD.ResultsThere were no significant differences in age, and weight between the ASD group and the normal control group. The ABC, SRS, RBS and CBCL scale scores in the ASD group were significantly higher than those in the normal control group. The salivary DHEA and pregnenolone concentrations in the ASD group were significantly higher than those in the normal control group, but there was no significant difference in cortisol. Spearman's correlation analysis showed that only pregnenolone associated with ABC. Logistic regression model analysis suggested that pregnenolone in saliva was an independent predictor of ASD. ROC analysis found that pregnenolone had good discrimination sensitivity between ASD and normal controls.ConclusionGave salivary preoperative a space for utilization as biomarker as number of cases are limited to this high expectation.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Modulates EEG Microstates in Low-Functioning Autism: A Pilot Study.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous disorder that affects several behavioral domains of neurodevelopment. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a new method that modulates motor and cognitive function and may have potential applications in ASD treatment. To identify its potential effects on ASD, differences in electroencephalogram (EEG) microstates were compared between children with typical development (n = 26) and those with ASD (n = 26). Furthermore, children with ASD were divided into a tDCS (experimental) and sham stimulation (control) group, and EEG microstates and Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) scores before and after tDCS were compared. Microstates A, B, and D differed significantly between children with TD and those with ASD. In the experimental group, the scores of microstates A and C and ABC before tDCS differed from those after tDCS. Conversely, in the control group, neither the EEG microstates nor the ABC scores before the treatment period (sham stimulation) differed from those after the treatment period. This study indicates that tDCS may become a viable treatment for ASD.

Integrative treatment program for the treatment of children with autism spectrum disorder: A prospective observational case series.

In a situation where conventional treatments for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are labor-intensive and there are concerns about the side effects of conventional medications, a 6-month integrative treatment program, including herbal medicine (HM), Floortime, and sensory enrichment therapy (SET) has been used on children with ASD in Korean medicine clinical settings. We observed the treatment responses of 18 children with ASD (66.7% male, mean age 3.9 ± 0.9 years) to the integrative treatment program as part of a prospective, single-center, observational case series. Individualized HMs were administered according to the patient's symptoms, and parents were instructed to perform Floortime and SET with their children at home for 2 h and 20 min a day, 5 days a week, respectively. The Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) and Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) were used to evaluate the core symptoms of ASD. A linear mixed model for repeated measures was used for analyzing the effect of the program over time, and logistic regression used to explore the predictors of treatment response. The CARS and ABC scores were significantly improved from 34.58 ± 6.27 and 69.28 ± 15.73 at baseline to 28.56 ± 6.05 and 39.67 ± 20.36 after 6 months (p < 0.0001, respectively). No serious adverse events (AEs) were reported, and compliance with HM, Floortime, and SET was high at >90%. This 6-month integrative treatment program appears to be a potentially effective, safe, and feasible option for children with ASD. Low baseline CARS scores may be predictors of higher treatment response.

Influence of acupuncture on the clinical manifestations and gastrointestinal symptoms of children with autism spectrum disorder

To observe the effect of acupuncture therapy based on "gut-brain axis" on clinical manifestations and gastrointestinal symptoms of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A total of 66 children with ASD were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group, 33 cases in each group. The control group was treated by routine rehabilitation training. On the basis of the control group, the observation group was treated with acupuncture based on "gut-brain axis", and the acupoints were Touwei (ST 8), Shenting (GV 24), Sishencong (EX-HN 1), Tianshu (ST 25), Zhongwan (CV 12), Zusanli (ST 36), etc. Both treatments were given once every other day, 3 times a week, 4 weeks as a course of treatment, consecutively for 3 courses. The scores of autism behavior checklist (ABC), TCM symptoms of gastrointestinal disease and childhood autism rating scale (CARS) were compared between the two groups before and after treatment, and the clinical efficacy was evaluated. After treatment, the scores of ABC, CARS and TCM symptoms of gastrointestinal disease in the two groups were lower than before treatment (P<0.05), and those in the observation group were lower than the control group (P<0.05). The total effective rate of the observation group was 90.9% (30/33), which was higher than 81.8% (27/33) in the control group (P<0.05). On the basis of routine rehabilitation training, acupuncture therapy based on "gut-brain axis" is effective in treating ASD, which can relieve the clinical manifestations and gastrointestinal symptoms.

Early life exposure to triclosan from antimicrobial daily necessities may increase the potential risk of autism spectrum disorder: A multicenter study in China

BackgroundAutism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of complex neurodevelopmental disorders with unclear etiologies. Our recent work indicated that maternal exposure to triclosan (TCS) significantly increased the autistic-like behavior in rats, possibly through disrupting neuronal retinoic acid signaling. Although environmental endocrine disruptors (EEDs) have been associated with autism in humans, the relationship between TCS, one of the EEDs found in antibacterial daily necessities, and autism has received little attention. ObjectiveThe aims of this multicenter study were to evaluate TCS concentrations in typically developing (TD) children and ASD children, and to determine the relationship between TCS levels and the core symptoms of ASD children. MethodsA total of 1345 children with ASD and 1183 TD children were enrolled from 13 cities in China. Ages ranged between 2 and 7 years. A questionnaire was used to investigate the maternal use of antibacterial daily necessities (UADN) during pregnancy. The core symptoms of ASD were evaluated using the Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), Social Response Scale (SRS), and the Children Neuropsychological and Behavior Scale-Revision 2016 (CNBS-R2016). The TCS concentration was measured using LC-MS/MS. ResultsMaternal UADN during pregnancy may be an unrecognized potential environmental risk factor for ASD (OR=1.267, P = 0.023). Maternal UADN during pregnancy strongly correlated with TCS levels in the offspring (Adjusted β = 0.277, P < 0.001). TCS concentration was higher in ASD children (P = 0.005), and positively correlated with ABC (Sensory subscales: P = 0.03; Social self-help subscales: P = 0.011) and SRS scale scores (Social awareness subscales: P = 0.045; Social communication subscales: P = 0.001; Autism behavior mannerisms subscales: P = 0.006; SRS total score: P = 0.003) in ASD children. This association was more pronounced in boys than in girls. ConclusionTo our knowledge, this is the first case-control study to examine the correlation between TCS and ASD. Our results suggest that maternal UADN during pregnancy may be a potential risk of ASD in offspring. Further detection of TCS levels showed that maternal UADN during pregnancy may be associated with excessive TCS exposure. In addition, the level of TCS in children with ASD is higher than TD children. The higher levels of TCS in children with ASD may be significantly associated with more pronounced core symptoms, and this association was more significant in male children with ASD.

Long-term outcomes of 328 patients with of autism spectrum disorder after fecal microbiota transplantation

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in the treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Methods: A longitudinal study was conducted. Clinical data from ASD patients with gastrointestinal symptoms and who underwent FMT in the Tenth People's Hospital affiliated to Tongji University or Jinling Hospital between May 2012 to May 2021 were retrospectively collected. Scores derived from the autism behavior checklist (ABC), the childhood autism rating scale (CARS), the Bristol stool form scale (BSFS), and the gastrointestinal symptom rating scale (GSRS) were analyzed at baseline and at the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 12th, 24th, 36th, 48th and 60th month after FMT. Records of any adverse reactions were collected. Generalized estimating equations were used for analysis of data on time points before and after FMT. Results: A total of 328 patients met the inclusion criteria for this study. Their mean age was 6.1±3.4 years old. The cohort included 271 boys and 57 girls. The percentage of patients remaining in the study for post-treatment follow-up at the 1st, 3rd, 12th, 24th, 36th, 48th and 60th month were as follows: 303 (92.4%), 284 (86.7%), 213 (64.9%), 190 (57.9%), 143 (43.6%), 79 (24.1%), 46 (14.0%), 31 (9.5%). After FMT, the average ABC score was significantly improved in the first 36 months and remained improved at the 48th month. However, the average score was not significantly different from baseline by the 60th month (1st-36th month, P<0.001; 48th month, P=0.008; 60th month, P=0.108). The average CARS score improved significantly during the first 48 months and remained improved at the 60th month (1st-48th month, P<0.001; 60th month, P=0.010). The average BSFS score was also significantly improved in the first 36 months (with an accompanying stool morphology that resembled type 4). This improvement was maintained at the 48th month. However, the average score was similar to baseline at the 60th month (1st-36th month, P<0.001; 48th month, P=0.008; 60th month, P=0.109). The average GSRS score was significantly improved during the first 24 months, but not afterwards (1st-24th month, P<0.001; 36th month, P=0.209; 48th month, P=0.996; 60th month, P=0.668). The adverse events recorded during treatment included abdominal distension in 21 cases (6.4%), nausea in 14 cases (4.3%), vomiting in 9 cases (2.7%), abdominal pain in 15 cases (4.6%), diarrhea in 18 cases (5.5%), fever in 13 cases (4.0%), and excitement in 24 cases (7.3%). All adverse reactions were mild to moderate and improved immediately after suspension of FMT or on treatment of symptoms. No serious adverse reactions occurred. Conclusion: FMT has satisfactory long-term efficacy and safety for the treatment of ASD with gastrointestinal symptoms.

Effect of Auditory Integration Training on Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Auditory Attention Disorder

<bold>Objective</bold> To observe the effect of auditory integration training on language, social communication and behavior of Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and auditory attention disorder. <bold>Methods</bold> A total of 83 ASD children with auditory attention disorder treated in the children rehabilitation department of Changsha Maternal and Child Health Hospital from January 2020 to May 2021 were randomly divided into control group and observation group, with 41 cases and 42 cases respectively. The control group received comprehensive rehabilitation training including the language training, behavior therapy, sentiment training and brain bionic electrical stimulation, once a day, five times a week, 20 times for a course of treatment in one month, with a rest interval of 3-5 days, lasting for nine months. In addition to the treatment of the control group, the observation group received auditory integration training for 30 minutes a time, once a day, 20 times for a course of treatment in one month, with a rest interval of two months, lasting for nine months. Before and after treatment, the missing number method was used to evaluate the auditory attention Gesell child development scale was used to evaluate the language and social communication skills; Psycho educational profile-3 (PEP-3) was used to evaluate the communication and behavior skills; Childhood autism rating scale (CARS) and autism behavior checklist (ABC) were used to evaluate the typical symptoms of autism. <bold>Results</bold> 1) Auditory attention: compared with that before treatment, the scores of the auditory attention of both groups significantly increased after treatment (<italic>P</italic>&lt;0.05). The observation group scored higher in the auditory attention than the control group after treatment (<italic>P</italic>&lt;0.05). 2) Language and social communication skills: compared with that before treatment, the scores of language and social communication skills in Gesell scale of both groups significantly increased after treatment (<italic>P</italic>&lt;0.05). Compared with the control group, the scores of language and social communication skills of the observation group after treatment were statistically higher (<italic>P</italic>&lt;0.05). 3) Communication and behavior skills: compared with those before treatment, the scores of communication and behavior skills of PEP-3 scale of both groups significantly increased after treatment (<italic>P</italic>&lt;0.05). The scores of communication and behavior skills of PEP-3 scale of the observation group were statistically higher than those of the control group after treatment (<italic>P</italic>&lt;0.05). 4) Typical symptoms of autism: compared with those before treatment, the scores of ABC and CARS of the observation group after treatment decreased significantly (<italic>P</italic>&lt;0.05). Compared with the control group, the ABC and CARS scores of the observation group after treatment were statistically lower (<italic>P</italic>&lt;0.05). <bold>Conclusion</bold> Auditory integration training can effectively improve the auditory attention, language, social communication, communication and behavior skills of acoustic children with auditory attention disorder, and alleviate the typical symptoms of autism.

Neurodevelopmental domain characteristics and their association with core symptoms in preschoolers with autism spectrum disorder in China: a nationwide multicenter study

BackgroundAutism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a group of clinically heterogenic neurodevelopmental disorders, with intellectual disability being one of its common comorbidities. No large-sample, multicenter study has focused on the neurodevelopmental aspect of preschoolers with ASD. This study investigated the neurodevelopmental characteristics of preschoolers with ASD in China and explored the association between them and the core symptoms.MethodsWe enrolled 1019 ASD preschoolers aged 2–7 years old from 13 cities around China between May 2018 and December 2019, and used the revised Children Neuropsychological and Behavior Scale (CNBS-R2016) to assess their neurodevelopment. Their autistic core behaviors were evaluated based on their Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS), Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), Child Autism Rating Scale (CARS), and communication warning behavior (CWB) scores in the CNBS-R2016.ResultsBased on general developmental quotient (GQ) < 70, 68.4% of the preschoolers with ASD had a developmental delay (DD), rated mild in 32.7% of them. The highest DD rate (> 70%) was found in language and personal-social skills, followed by fine motor skills (68.9%). Gross motor skills had the lowest DD rate (34.0%). We found that fine motor, language, and personal-social developmental quotients (DQs) were significantly lower than gross motor skills in no DD (GQ > 70), mild DD (GQ 55–69), and moderate and below DD groups (GQ ≤ 54). Furthermore, the DQs for language and personal-social skills were significantly lower than for gross and fine motor skills in both DD groups. The ABC, SRS, CARS, and CWB scores in the no DD group were the lowest, moderate in the mild DD group, and highest in the moderate and below DD group. Besides, negative correlations were found between the DQs of the four domains and the ABC, SRS, CARS, and CWB scores, of which the language and personal-social skills DQs had the strongest correlations.ConclusionsPreschoolers with ASD had unbalanced neurodevelopment domain patterns and their neurodevelopmental levels were negatively correlated with the autism core symptoms. Hence, pediatricians should actively evaluate the neurodevelopment of children with ASD and conduct long-term follow-up during their early childhood to promote early diagnosis and develop personalized intervention plans.Trial registrationChiCTR2000031194, registered on 03/23/2020.

Effect of parent-child cooperative music therapy on children with autism spectrum disorder and their mothers: a prospective randomized controlled study

To study the effect of parent-child cooperative music therapy on the core symptoms of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their mothers. In this prospective study, 112 children with ASD and their mothers were divided into a music therapy group and an applied behavior analysis (ABA) group using a random number table (n=56 each). The children in the ABA group were treated with ABA, and those in the music therapy group were given parent-child cooperative music therapy in addition to the ABA treatment. The duration of intervention was 8 weeks for both groups. Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), Parenting Stress Index-Short form (PSI-SF), Family APGAR Index, and Herth Hope Index (HHI) were used to evaluate the core symptoms of children with ASD and the parenting stress, family APGAR index, and hope level of mothers before and after intervention. A total of 100 child-mother dyads completed the whole study, with 50 child-mother dyads in each group. After intervention, the children in the music therapy group had significantly lower total score of ABC scale and scores of sensation, social interaction, and somatic movement, as well as a significantly lower total score of CARS than those in the ABA group (P<0.05). After intervention, compared with the mothers in the ABA group, the mothers in the music therapy group had significantly higher total score of PSI-SF and score of parent-child dysfunctional interaction, significantly higher total score of HHI and scores of each dimension, and significantly higher total score of APGAR and scores of cooperation and intimacy (P<0.05). Parent-child cooperative music therapy combined with ABA can alleviate the core symptoms of children with ASD, reduce the parenting stress of their mothers, and improve family APGAR index and hope level.

A Multi-Center Study on the Relationship Between Developmental Regression and Disease Severity in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders.

IntroductionThis study aimed to investigate the prevalence of developmental regression in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and to explore its relationship with disease severity.MethodsWe finally included 1,027 ASD children aged 2–5 years from 13 cities in China: 138 with regressive ASD and 889 with non-regressive ASD. The Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS), Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), Child Autism Rating Scale (CARS), and Children Neuropsychological and Behavioral Scale-Revision 2016 (CNBS-R2016) were used to evaluate the core symptoms and developmental status of children in the two groups.ResultsAmong the 1,027 ASD children eventually included, 138 (13.44%) cases showed regressive behavior and the average regression occurring age was 24.00 (18.00–27.00) months. Among the regressive children, 105 cases (76.09%) had language regression, 79 cases (57.25%) had social regression, and 4 cases (2.90%) had motor regression. The total scores of ABC and the sub-score of sensory and stereotypic behavior (β = 5.122, 95% CI: 0.818, 9.426, P < 0.05; β = 1.104, 95% CI: 0.120, 2.089, P < 0.05; β = 1.388, 95% CI: 0.038, 2.737, P < 0.05), the SRS total scores and the sub-score of autistic mannerisms (β = 4.991, 95% CI: 0.494, 9.487, P < 0.05; β = 1.297, 95% CI: 0.140, 2.453, P < 0.05) of children in the regressive group were all higher than the non-regressive group. The total developmental quotient (DQ) of CNBS-R2016 and the DQ of gross motor, fine motor, adaptive behavior, language (β = −5.827, 95% CI: −11.529, −0.125, P < 0.05) and personal society in the regressive group were lower than the non-regressive group and the proportion of children with intelligent developmental impairment was higher the non-regressive group.ConclusionRegressive autism is mainly manifested as language and social regression. Children with regressive ASD have more severe core symptoms, lower neurodevelopmental level DQ, and more serious disease degree than children with non-regressive ASD, which requires further etiological examinations and more clinical attention.

Associations Between Sex Hormone Levels and Autistic Traits in Infertile Patients With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Their Offspring.

Objectives1) To explore the associations between autistic traits and sex hormone changes in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS); 2) To explore the influence of PCOS parental autistic traits and related sex hormone changes on autistic traits in their offspring.MethodThis is a case–control study that recruited two groups: polycystic ovarian syndrome-induced infertile subjects as the observation group and fallopian tube factor-induced infertility subjects as the control group. Both cohorts were patients undergoing infertility treatment in the Productive Medicine Center, Peking University People’s Hospital. Two types of questionnaires were completed by patients between May 1st, 2015, and May 1st, 2016: 1. The autism-spectrum quotient (AQ) 2. Repetitive behavior scale-revised (RBS-r). Levels of sex hormones in serum were measured in patients. The correlations between the levels of these biochemical factors and scores of the autistic traits were analysed. From July 1st, 2020 to September 1st, 2021, these patients were followed up by telephone and asked to fill out a questionnaire online. The questionnaire included date of delivery, complications, medicine used and negative events during pregnancy (e.g., death of relatives, divorce, etc.), delivery condition, breastfeeding, AQ scale and Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) of their children.ResultsThe patients in the PCOS group had significantly higher AQ scores than those in the control group. Levels of luteinizing hormone and testosterone were also higher in the PCOS group. No significant differences were found between the two groups in RBS-r levels, follicle-stimulating hormone, estradiol or progesterone. In the two combined groups, there were significantly positive correlations between the AQ scores and the luteinizing hormone concentration, as well as between scores of RBS-r and testosterone concentration. Moreover, there was a significantly negative correlation between the level of progesterone and the RBS-r score. According to the follow-up data, the AQ scores of offspring were positively correlated with the RBS-r scores of their mothers. The ABC scores of offspring were positively correlated with the RBS-r scores and the childbearing age of their mothers. No significant difference was found between the two groups in age of delivery, complications, special medication used, negative events during pregnancy, delivery situation, postpartum breastfeeding, age of children, or AQ scores or ABC scores of children. There were no significant correlations between the scale scores of children and the related sex hormone levels of mothers. This could indicate that the higher levels of luteinizing hormone and testosterone and the lower level of progesterone accompanied more pronounced autistic traits in PCOS. Furthermore, the higher delivery age and RBS-r score in mothers accompanied the higher AQ and ABC scores in children.ConclusionCompared with the control group, PCOS patients had more autistic traits (especially social dysfunction). The autistic traits in PCOS patients might be related to the elevation in testosterone concentration and luteinizing hormone levels and the decline in progesterone level. Moreover, the autistic traits in the offspring of PCOS patients might be related to the parental high delivery age and high tendency to autism traits.

Sleep problems in children with autism spectrum disorder: a\xa0multicenter\xa0survey

BackgroundHigh prevalence of sleep problems have been reported in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This study aims to investigate the sleep conditions of ASD children in China, and explore the relationship between the common sleep problems and core symptoms and developmental levels.MethodsUsing a cross-sectional design, we included 2 to 7-year-old children from 13 cities in China: 1310 with ASD and 1158 with typically-developing (TD) children. The neurodevelopmental level was evaluated with the revised Children Neuropsychological and Behavior Scale (CNBS-R2016). ASD were diagnosed with DSM-5 and Child Autism Rating Scale (CARS). the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS), the Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) and the communication warning behavior sub-scale in CNBS-R2016 valued autism behaviors. The children’ s sleep habits questionnaire (CSHQ) assessed sleep conditions.ResultsThe prevalence of sleep disorders in ASD children was significantly higher than that in TD (67.4% vs. 51%, p < 0.01), and among them the four dimensions with the highest prevalence of sleep problems were bedtime resistance (25.6%), sleep anxiety (22.7%), sleep onset delay (17.9%) and daytime sleepiness (14.7%). ASD children with sleep onset delay or sleep anxiety had higher ABC, SRS scores and higher scores on communication warning behavior with sleep anxiety, with daytime sleepiness had higher ABC, SRS and CARS scores, and with bedtime resistance had higher SRS total scores. Differences in the neurodevelopmental level were not significant.ConclusionChildren with ASD have a higher prevalence of sleep problems. Bedtime resistance, anxiety, sleep onset delay and daytime sleepiness may be related to the core symptoms, but not be related to the developmental level in ASD children. In the clinic, sleep assessment should be included in the routine of ASD visits, and during the intervention, sleep hygiene education is as important as the treatment of biological factors.Trial registrationThe study was approved by the ethics committee of the Children’s Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, Approval Number: (2018) IRB (STUDY) NO. 121, and registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (Registration number: ChiCTR2000031194).
