A new harmonic detection strategy based on improved series repetitive controller

SummaryThe d‐q detection method based on instantaneous reactive power theory (IRPT) is one of the commonly used time‐domain analysis methods for harmonic detection. Due to the poor dynamic performance of the algorithm caused by the low pass filter (LPF) in the d‐q detection method, an improved series repetitive control (ISRC) structure is proposed in this paper. Using attenuation factor and correction factor to improve the series repetitive controller, the ISRC contains a negative resonance peak with a peak value of 150 dB at the 6 k harmonic frequency, and the amplitude gain is 0 dB at frequencies outside the 6 k harmonic frequency. Therefore, ISRC can achieve good attenuation effect on 6 k harmonics while maintaining the same gain at other frequencies. ISRC is used instead of LPF in the traditional d‐q detection and this strategy improves the dynamic response of the system while guaranteeing its steady state performance. Finally, simulations and experiments verify the feasibility of the strategy.

Attenuation correction for phantom tests: an alternative to maximum-likelihood attenuation correction factor-based correction for clinical studies in time-of-flight PET.

This study evaluates the phantom attenuation correction (PAC) method as an alternative to maximum-likelihood attenuation correction factor (ML-ACF) correction in time-of-flight (TOF) brain positron emission tomography (PET) studies. In the PAC algorithm, a template emission image [Formula: see text] and a template attenuation coefficient image [Formula: see text] are prepared as a data set based on phantom geometry. Position-aligned attenuation coefficient image [Formula: see text] is derived by aligning [Formula: see text] using parameters that match the template emission image [Formula: see text] to measured emission image [Formula: see text]. Then, attenuation coefficient image [Formula: see text] combined with a headrest image is used for scatter and attenuation correction in the image reconstruction. To evaluate the PAC algorithm as an alternative to ML-ACF, Hoffman 3D brain and cylindrical phantoms were measured to obtain the image quality indexes of contrast and uniformity. These phantoms were also wrapped with a radioactive sheet to obtain attenuation coefficient images using ML-ACF. Emission images were reconstructed with attenuation correction by PAC and ML-ACF, and the results were compared using contrast and uniformity as well as visual assessment. CT attenuation correction (CT-AC) was also applied as a reference. The contrast obtained by ML-ACF was slightly overestimated due to its unique experimental condition for applying ML-ACF in Hoffman 3D brain phantom but the uniformity was almost equivalent among ML-ACF, CT-AC, and PAC. PAC showed reasonable result without overestimation compared to ML-ACF and CT-AC. PAC is an attenuation correction method that can ensure the performance in phantom test, and is considered to be a reasonable alternative to clinically used ML-ACF-based attenuation correction.

Initial evaluation of a new maximum-likelihood attenuation correction factor-based attenuation correction for time-of-flight brain PET.

The aim of this study was to evaluate an image reconstruction algorithm, including a new maximum-likelihood attenuation correction factor (ML-ACF) for time of flight (TOF) brain positron emission tomography (PET). The implemented algorithm combines an ML-ACF method that simultaneously estimates both the emission image and attenuation sinogram from TOF emission data, and a scaling method based on anatomical features. To evaluate the algorithm's quantitative accuracy, three-dimensional brain phantom images were acquired and soft-tissue attenuation coefficients and emission values were analyzed. The heterogeneous distributions of attenuation coefficients in soft tissue, skull, and nasal cavity were sufficiently visualized. The attenuation coefficient of soft tissue remained within 5% of theoretical value. Attenuation-corrected emission showed no lateral differences, and significant differences among soft tissue were within the error range. The ML-ACF-based attenuation correction implemented for TOF brain PET worked well and obtained practical levels of accuracy.

Comparison of deep learning-based emission-only attenuation correction methods for positron emission tomography.

This study aims to compare two approaches using only emission PET data and a convolution neural network (CNN) to correct the attenuation (μ) of the annihilation photons in PET. One of the approaches uses a CNN to generate μ-maps from the non-attenuation-corrected (NAC) PET images (μ-CNNNAC). In the other method, CNN is used to improve the accuracy of μ-maps generated using maximum likelihood estimation of activity and attenuation (MLAA) reconstruction (μ-CNNMLAA). We investigated the improvement in the CNN performance by combining the two methods (μ-CNNMLAA+NAC) and the suitability of μ-CNNNAC for providing the scatter distribution required for MLAA reconstruction. Image data from 18F-FDG (n = 100) or 68Ga-DOTATOC (n = 50) PET/CT scans were used for neural network training and testing. The error of the attenuation correction factors estimated using μ-CT and μ-CNNNAC was over 7%, but that of scatter estimates was only 2.5%, indicating the validity of the scatter estimation from μ-CNNNAC. However, CNNNAC provided less accurate bone structures in the μ-maps, while the best results in recovering the fine bone structures were obtained by applying CNNMLAA+NAC. Additionally, the μ-values in the lungs were overestimated by CNNNAC. Activity images (λ) corrected for attenuation using μ-CNNMLAA and μ-CNNMLAA+NAC were superior to those corrected using μ-CNNNAC, in terms of their similarity to λ-CT. However, the improvement in the similarity with λ-CT by combining the CNNNAC and CNNMLAA approaches was insignificant (percent error for lung cancer lesions, λ-CNNNAC = 5.45% ± 7.88%; λ-CNNMLAA = 1.21% ± 5.74%; λ-CNNMLAA+NAC = 1.91% ± 4.78%; percent error for bone cancer lesions, λ-CNNNAC = 1.37% ± 5.16%; λ-CNNMLAA = 0.23% ± 3.81%; λ-CNNMLAA+NAC = 0.05% ± 3.49%). The use of CNNNAC was feasible for scatter estimation to address the chicken-egg dilemma in MLAA reconstruction, but CNNMLAA outperformed CNNNAC.

Generation of attenuation correction factors from time-of-flight PET emission data using high-resolution residual U-net

Attenuation correction of annihilation photons is essential in PET image reconstruction for providing accurate quantitative activity maps. In the absence of an aligned CT device to obtain attenuation information, we propose the high-resolution residual U-net (HRU-Net) to extract attenuation correction factors (ACF) directly from time-of-flight (TOF) PET emission data. HRU-Net is built upon the U-Net encoding-decoding architecture and it utilizes four blocks of modified residual connections in each stage. In each residual block, concatenation is performed to incorporate input and output feature vectors. In addition, flexible and efficient elements of convolutional neural network (CNN) such as dilated convolutions, pre-activation order of a batch normalization (BN) layer, a rectified linear unit (ReLU) layer and a convolution layer, and residual connections are utilized to extract high resolution features. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, HRU-Net estimated ACF, attenuation maps and activity maps are compared with maximum likelihood ACF (MLACF) algorithm, U-Net, and HC-Net. An ablation study is conducted using non-TOF and TOF sinograms as inputs of networks. The experimental results show that HRU-Net with TOF projections as inputs leads to normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) of 4.84% 1.58%, outperforming MLACF, U-Net and HC-Net with NRMSE of 47.82% 13.62%, 6.92% 1.94%, and 7.99% 2.49%, respectively.

2D feasibility study of joint reconstruction of attenuation and activity in limited angle TOF-PET.

Several research groups are studying organ-dedicated limited angle positron emission tomography (PET) systems to optimize performance-cost ratio, sensitivity, access to the patient and/or flexibility. Often open systems are considered, typically consisting of two detector panels of various sizes. Such systems provide incomplete sampling due to limited angular coverage and/or truncation, which leads to artefacts in the reconstructed activity images. In addition, these organ-dedicated PET systems are usually stand-alone systems, and as a result, no attenuation information can be obtained from anatomical images acquired in the same imaging session. It has been shown that the use of time-of-flight information reduces incomplete data artefacts and enables the joint estimation of the activity and the attenuation factors. In this work, we explore with simple 2D simulations the performance and stability of a joint reconstruction algorithm, for imaging with a limited angle PET system. The reconstruction is based on the so-called MLACF (Maximum Likelihood Attenuation Correction Factors) algorithm and uses linear attenuation coefficients in a known-tissue-class region to obtain absolute quantification. Different panel sizes and different time-of-flight (TOF) resolutions are considered. The noise propagation is compared to that of MLEM reconstruction with exact attenuation correction (AC) for the same PET system. The results show that with good TOF resolution, images of good visual quality can be obtained. If also a good scatter correction can be implemented, quantitative PET imaging will be possible. Further research, in particular on scatter correction, is required.

Assessment of deep learning-based PET attenuation correction frameworks in the sinogram domain

This study set out to investigate various deep learning frameworks for PET attenuation correction in the sinogram domain. Different models for both time-of-flight (TOF) and non-TOF PET emission data were implemented, including direct estimation of the attenuation corrected (AC) emission sinograms from the nonAC sinograms, estimation of the attenuation correction factors (ACFs) from PET emission data, correction of scattered photons prior to training of the models, and separate training of the models for each segment of the emission sinograms. A segmentation-based 2-class AC map was included as a bottom-line technique for comparison of the different models considering PET/CT AC as reference. Fifty clinical TOF PET/CT brain scans were employed for training whereas 20 were used for evaluation of the models. Quantitative analysis of the resulting PET images was carried out through region-wise standardized uptake value (SUV) bias calculation. The models relying on TOF information significantly outperformed the nonTOF models as well as the segmentation-based AC map resulting in maximum SUV bias of 6.5%, 9.5%, and 14.0%, respectively. Estimation of ACFs from either TOF or nonTOF PET emission data was very sensitive to prior scatter correction. However, direct estimation of AC sinograms from nonAC sinograms revealed no sensitivity to scatter correction, thus obviating the need for prior scatter estimation. For TOF PET data, though direct prediction of the AC sinograms does not require prior estimation of scattered photons, it requires input/output channels equal to the number of TOF bins which might be computationally or memory-wise expensive. Prediction of the ACF matrices from TOF emission data is less demanding in terms of memory as it requires only a single channel for output. AC in the sinogram domain of TOF PET data exhibited superior performance compared to both nonTOF and segmentation-based methods. However, such models require multiple input/output channels.

Corrections for photons attenuation and scattering for the extrapolation chamber for measurement of air-kerma strength of 125I brachytherapy source

A type of extrapolation chamber was designed in China Institute of Atomic Energy, CIAE. The chamber was used for the measurement of the air-kerma strength of the medical radiation 125I source on primary standard level. In order to obtain the air-krema strength with a low uncertainty, some correction factors such as photon attenuation and scattering are needed to calculate. Correction factors for different types of 125I seeds were estimated with increasing chamber depth. Based on the relation between ionization current and average photon fluence, attenuation correction factors were calculated with the analytical solution. Additionally, the scattering correction factors were estimated by a suitable method of Monte Carlo simulation. Photon attenuation includes four components. katt-volume, katt-foil, katt-sf, and katt-Al. The differences of correction factors are concerned, mainly due to the variation of chamer depths and 125I seed types. katt-volume increases from 1.001 to 1.005. katt-foil varies between 1.0012 and 1.0014. katt-sf changes from 1.015 to 1.018. katt-Al varies between 1.038 and 1.048, which largely depend on the photon spectrum from the source. Meanwhile, the geometric dimension of the ionization chamber has a great influence on the scattering correction factors. The ksca values vary from 0.9960 to 0.9964 with different chamber depths, which only has 0.04% fluctuation.

Deep learning-guided estimation of attenuation correction factors from time-of-flight PET emission data.

Attenuation correction (AC) is essential for quantitative PET imaging. In the absence of concurrent CT scanning, for instance on hybrid PET/MRI systems or dedicated brain PET scanners, an accurate approach for synthetic CT generation is highly desired. In this work, a novel framework is proposed wherein attenuation correction factors (ACF) are estimated from time-of-flight (TOF) PET emission data using deep learning. In this approach, referred to as called DL-EM), the different TOF sinogram bins pertinent to the same slice are fed into a multi-input channel deep convolutional network to estimate a single ACF sinogram associated with the same slice. The clinical evaluation of the proposed DL-EM approach consisted of 68 clinical brain TOF PET/CT studies, where CT-based attenuation correction (CTAC) served as reference. A two-tissue class consisting of background-air and soft-tissue segmentation of the TOF PET non-AC images (SEG) as a proxy of the technique used in the clinic was also included in the comparative evaluation. Qualitative and quantitative PET analysis was performed through SUV bias maps quantification in 63 different brain regions. The DL-EM approach resulted in 6.1±9.7% relative mean absolute error (RMAE) in bony structures compared to SEG AC method with RMAE of 16.1±8.2% (p-value <0.001). Considering the entire head region, DL-EM led to a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.3±0.01 outperforming the SEG method with RMSE of 0.8±0.02 SUV (p-value <0.001). The region-wise analysis of brain PET studies revealed less than 7% absolute SUV bias for the DL-EM approach, whereas the SEG method resulted in more than 14% absolute SUV bias (p-value <0.05). Qualitative assessment and quantitative PET analysis demonstrated the superior performance of the DL-EM approach over the segmentation-based technique with clinically acceptable SUV bias. The results obtained using the DL-EM approach are comparable to state-of-the-art MRI-guided AC methods. Yet, this approach enables the extraction of interesting features about patient-specific attenuation which could be employed not only as a stand-alone AC approach but also as complementary/prior information in other AC algorithms.

Absolute measurement of photon flux using ionization chamber in (6~20) keV synchrotron radiation X‐rays

Absolute measurement of photon flux under high‐fluence rate X‐rays was required in photon diagnostics for X‐ray lasers. A free‐air ionization chamber used for the reproducibility of air‐kerma in high‐fluence rate X‐ray was designed, and the monoenergetic X‐rays flux of (6–20) keV were absolutely measured on Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility. The energy spectrum of the monoenergetic X‐rays was measured using a silicon drift detector, and the proportion of higher harmonics was determined. The saturation curve, air attenuation correction factor, and composite loss correction factor of the free‐air ionization chamber were obtained experimentally. The air‐kerma rate for the (6~20) keV monoenergetic X‐ray was measured accurately, and the relative combined standard uncertainty of the air‐kerma is 0.61%.

PET/MRI attenuation estimation in the lung: A review of past, present, and potential techniques.

Positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) potentially offers several advantages over positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), for example, no CT radiation dose and soft tissue images from MR acquired at the same time as the PET. However, obtaining accurate linear attenuation correction (LAC) factors for the lung remains difficult in PET/MRI. LACs depend on electron density and in the lung, these vary significantly both within an individual and from person to person. Current commercial practice is to use a single‐valued population‐based lung LAC, and better estimation is needed to improve quantification. Given the under‐appreciation of lung attenuation estimation as an issue, the inaccuracy of PET quantification due to the use of single‐valued lung LACs, the unique challenges of lung estimation, and the emerging status of PET/MRI scanners in lung disease, a review is timely. This paper highlights past and present methods, categorizing them into segmentation, atlas/mapping, and emission‐based schemes. Potential strategies for future developments are also presented.

Detecting the halo heating from AGN feedback with ALMA

ABSTRACT The Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (SZ) effect can potentially be used to investigate the heating of the circumgalactic medium and subsequent suppression of cold gas accretion on to the host galaxy caused by quasar feedback. We use a deep ALMA observation of HE0515-4414 in band 4, the most luminous quasar known at the peak of cosmic star formation (z = 1.7), to search for the SZ signal tracing the heating of the galaxy’s halo. ALMA’s sensitivity to a broad range of spatial scales enables us to disentangle emitting compact sources from the negative, extended SZ signal. We obtain a marginal SZ detection (∼3.3σ) on scales of about 300 kpc (30–40 arcsec), at the 0.2 mJy level, 0.5 mJy after applying a correction factor for primary beam attenuation and flux that is resolved out by the array. We show that our result is consistent with a simulated ALMA observation of a similar quasar in the fable cosmological simulations. We emphasize that detecting an SZ signal is more easily achieved in the visibility plane than in the (inferred) images. We also confirm a marginal detection (3.2σ) of a potential SZ dip on smaller scales (&lt;100 kpc) already claimed by other authors, possibly highlighting the complex structure of the halo heating. Finally, we use SZ maps from the fable cosmological simulations, convolved with ALMA simulations, to illustrate that band 3 observations are much more effective in detecting the SZ signal with higher significance, and discuss the optimal observing strategy.

Monte Carlo modeling of a holder for irradiation of dosimeters in beta radiation beams

A study of the influence of a dosimetric holder and its cover for the irradiation of the dosimeters in the Beta Secondary Standard BSS2 radiation fields is reported. The correction factors for attenuation or scattering were calculated taking into account the BSS2 beta source energy, as well as the detector source distance. The study and the determination of these factors were carried out using the Monte Carlo Method. The results of the correction factors showed that the absorption and scattering of the electrons depend greatly on the energy of beta radionuclides. The determined correction factors are in agreement with the international report ISO 6980.

Development of granular radioactive reference source from 152,154Eu adsorbed on tin tungstate matrix

Abstract A reference source with the granular active portion was made using 152,154Eu(III) loaded tin tungstate material. Batch equilibration method was used to investigate the interaction of 152,154Eu(III) radiotracer (10−4 M) in acid solutions on tin(IV) tungstate gel matrix. The sorption behavior of 152,154Eu(III) showed high affinity towards tin(IV) tungstate gel matrix at low pH values. Tin tungstate gel matrix was loaded with 152,154Eu from batch at pH 3. Standardization of the source was done spectroscopically with reference to primary certified set of radioactive sources and with the aid of HPGe detector. Random and true coincidence summing was carried out by following-up coincidence in 152Eu and possible interference between γ lines of 152Eu and 154Eu. The relation between the grain size and the activity of samples was studied. Correction factor for capsule attenuation was applied.

P037] Implementation of a new free-air ionization chamber as a primary air kerma standard for mammography radiation qualities

Purpose The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) offers air kerma calibrations of secondary standards for standard dosimetry laboratories worldwide. Due to the significant increase in the demand for such calibrations in mammography X-ray beams (tube high voltages ranging from 20 kV to 50 kV), it was decided to construct and manufacture a novel free-air ionization chamber (FAC) with a design especially optimized for radiation qualities used in mammography. This work describes the final technical construction of the new FAC and its implementation as a primary air kerma standard at PTB. Methods The new FAC is of the parallel-plate type optimized for the photon energy range of 5 keV to 50 keV. Special emphasis has been given to the design of a chamber without potential wires in the beamline to minimize the scattering and attenuation of the X-rays. The design of the chamber was optimized with respect to electrical field homogeneity using the software package SIMION Version 8.1. This software was also used to calculate k d , the correction factor for the distortion of the electric field of the final chamber design. The other correction factors for photon attenuation, scattering, aperture transmission and scattering, electron loss and violating charged-particle equilibrium have been calculated using the user code ’egs_fac’ of the EGSnrc Monte Carlo transport simulation software package. Finally, air kerma rates measured with the PK50, the new free-air chamber, were compared with those measured with the other well-established primary air kerma standards of PTB. Results The PK50 was fully characterized by all the necessary correction factors. The correction for the field distortion is below 0.8%, thus the design goal has been achieved. For the ISO narrow series, the correction factors calculated with egs_fac are below 1.0%, proving that the chamber is well optimized for energies below 50 keV. Comparisons of air kerma measurements with the PK50 and established FACs yielded results which were consistent within the uncertainties of a few parts in 1000. Conclusions The new chamber designated as the PK50 is now ready for use as a primary air kerma standard for low-energy X-rays at PTB.

Pulmonary deposition of fluticasone propionate/formoterol in healthy volunteers, asthmatics and COPD patients with a novel breath-triggered inhaler

A combination of fluticasone propionate/formoterol fumarate (FP/FORM) has been incorporated within a novel, breath-triggered device, named K-haler®. This low resistance device requires a gentle inspiratory effort to actuate it, triggering at an inspiratory flow rate of approximately 30 L/min; thus avoiding the need for coordination of inhalation with manual canister depression. The aim of the study was to evaluate total and regional pulmonary deposition of FP/FORM when administered via the K-haler device. Twelve healthy subjects, 12 asthmatics, and 12 COPD patients each received a single dose of 2 puffs 99mtechnetium-labelled FP/FORM 125/5 μg. A gamma camera was used to obtain anterior and posterior two-dimensional images of drug deposition. Prior transmission scans (using a99mtechnetium flood source) allowed the definition of regions of interest and calculation of attenuation correction factors. Image analysis was performed per standardised methods. Of 36 subjects, 35 provided evaluable post-dose scintigraphic data. Mean subject ages were 35.7 (healthy), 44.5 (asthma) and 61.7 years (COPD); mean FEV1% predicted values were 109.8%, 77.4% and 43.2%, respectively. Mean pulmonary deposition was 26.6% (healthy), 44.7% (asthma), 39.0% (COPD) of the delivered dose. The respective mean penetration indices (peripheral:central ratio normalised to a transmission lung scan) were 0.44, 0.31 and 0.30. FP/FORM administration via the K-haler device resulted in high lung deposition in patients with obstructive lung disease but somewhat lesser deposition in healthy subjects. Regional deposition data demonstrated drug deposition in both the central and peripheral regions in all subject populations. 2015-000744-42.

Image-Based 2D Re-Projection for Attenuation Substitution in PET Neuroimaging.

In dual modality positron emission tomography (PET)/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), attenuation correction (AC) methods are continually improving. Although a new AC can sometimes be generated from existing MR data, its application requires a new reconstruction. We evaluate an approximate 2D projection method that allows offline image-based reprocessing. 2-Deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose ([18F]FDG) brain scans were acquired (Siemens HR+) for six subjects. Attenuation data were obtained using the scanner's transmission source (SAC). Additional scanning was performed on a Siemens mMR including production of a Dixon-based MR AC (MRAC). The MRAC was imported to the HR+ and the PET data were reconstructed twice: once using native SAC (ground truth); once using the imported MRAC (imperfect AC). The re-projection method was implemented as follows. The MRAC PET was forward projected to approximately reproduce attenuation-corrected sinograms. The SAC and MRAC images were forward projected and converted to attenuation-correction factors (ACFs). The MRAC ACFs were removed from the MRAC PET sinograms by division; the SAC ACFs were applied by multiplication. The regenerated sinograms were reconstructed by filtered back projection to produce images (SUBAC PET) in which SAC has been substituted for MRAC. Ideally SUBAC PET should match SAC PET. Via coregistered T1 images, FreeSurfer (FS; MGH, Boston) was used to define a set of cortical gray matter regions of interest. Regional activity concentrations were extracted for SAC PET, MRAC PET, and SUBAC PET. SUBAC PET showed substantially smaller root mean square error than MRAC PET with averaged values of 1.5% versus 8.1%. Re-projection is a viable image-based method for the application of an alternate attenuation correction in neuroimaging.

Re-evaluation of the correction factors for the GROVEX

The GROVEX (GROssVolumige EXtrapolationskammer, large-volume extrapolation chamber) is the primary standard for the dosimetry of low-dose-rate interstitial brachytherapy at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB). In the course of setup modifications and re-measuring of several dimensions, the correction factors have been re-evaluated in this work. The correction factors for scatter and attenuation have been recalculated using the Monte Carlo software package EGSnrc, and a new expression has been found for the divergence correction. The obtained results decrease the measured reference air kerma rate by approximately 0.9% for the representative example of a seed of type Bebig I25.S16C. This lies within the expanded uncertainty (k = 2).

Biokinetics, dosimetry, and radiation risk in infants after 99mTc-MAG3 scans

BackgroundRenal scans are among the most frequent exams performed on infants and toddlers. Due to the young age, this patient group can be classified as a high-risk group with a higher probability for developing stochastic radiation effects compared to adults. As there are only limited data on biokinetics and dosimetry in this patient group, the aim of this study was to reassess the dosimetry and the associated radiation risk for infants undergoing 99mTc-MAG3 renal scans based on a retrospective analysis of existing patient data.Consecutive data were collected from 20 patients younger than 20 months (14 males; 6 females) with normal renal function undergoing 99mTc-MAG3 scans. To estimate the patient-specific organ activity, a retrospective calibration was performed based on a set of two 3D-printed infant kidneys filled with known activities. Both phantoms were scanned at different positions along the anteroposterior axis inside a water phantom, providing depth- and size-dependent attenuation correction factors for planar imaging. Time-activity curves were determined by drawing kidney, bladder, and whole-body regions-of-interest for each patient, and subsequently applying the calibration factor for conversion of counts to activity. Patient-specific time-integrated activity coefficients were obtained by integrating the organ-specific time-activity curves. Absorbed and effective dose coefficients for each patient were assessed with OLINDA/EXM for the provided newborn and 1-year-old model. The risk estimation was performed individually for each of the 20 patients with the NCI Radiation Risk Assessment Tool.ResultsThe mean age of the patients was 7.0 ± 4.5 months, with a weight between 5 and 12 kg and a body size between 60 and 89 cm. The injected activities ranged from 12 to 24 MBq of 99mTc-MAG3. The patients’ organ-specific mean absorbed dose coefficients were 0.04 ± 0.03 mGy/MBq for the kidneys and 0.27 ± 0.24 mGy/MBq for the bladder. The mean effective dose coefficient was 0.02 ± 0.02 mSv/MBq. Based on the dosimetry results, an evaluation of the excess lifetime risk for the development of radiation-induced cancer showed that the group of newborns has a risk of 16.8 per 100,000 persons, which is about 12% higher in comparison with the 1-year-old group with 14.7 per 100,000 persons (all values are given as mean plus/minus one standard deviation except otherwise specified).ConclusionIn this study, we retrospectively derived new data on biokinetics and dosimetry for infants with normal kidney function after undergoing renal scans with 99mTc-MAG3. In addition, we analyzed the associated age- and gender-specific excess lifetime risk due to ionizing radiation. The radiation-associated stochastic risk increases with the organ doses, taking age- and gender-specific influences into account. Overall, the lifetime radiation risk associated with the 99mTc-MAG3 scans is very low in comparison to the general population risk for developing cancer.

A Mathematical Model of Multi-Hop HF Radio Propagation

The transmission loss by dividing it to Median medium attenuation and Media attenuation correction factor is discussed. The Longley-Rice Model is introduced and improved; the correlation proportion of our model is work out. Then the reflection correction factor is calculated in the case of silent and turbulent ocean, which comes to the total loss and strength of the first reflection. The signal to noise ratio is explained and the relationship between various angle of incidence and correction factor are explored. According to fixed signal to noise ratio 14, the highest bounce frequency is got.
