Inhibitory effect of bovine milk osteopontin on the initial attachment of Streptococcus mutans

We investigated the effect of bovine milk osteopontin (OPN) on the initial adhesion of Streptococcus mutans to hydroxyapatite. Hydroxyapatite pellets were immersed in 5.4 µM OPN solution at 37°C for 30 min. As a control, Milli-Q water was used. S. mutans were incubated at 37°C for 2 h on the pellets. Crystal violet staining and the quantitation of DNA were evaluated. Violet staining was observed on the hydroxyapatite pellets in the control group, but faint staining was seen in the OPN group. Amount of DNA attached to the hydroxyapatite pellet was significantly lower in the OPN group (P < 0.05). These results suggest that initial adhesion of S. mutans to the hydroxyapatite is inhibited with OPN.

Biomimetic Approach to Counter Streptococcus mutans Biofilm: An In Vitro Study on Seashells.

Aim This study aimed to investigate the anti-adherent property of the seashell surface and periostracum to prevent the formation of Streptococcus mutans biofilm. Materials and methods The seashells were initially collected from the natural urban beach, and an antibiofilm assay of the shells with and without periostracum was performed against Streptococcus mutans. Furthermore, the seashells were analyzed with a stylus profilometer (Mitutoyo Surftest SJ-301, Mitutoyo America Corporation, Illinois, USA), atomic force microscope (AFM; Nanosurf Easyscan 2, Nanosurf Inc., USA), contact angle assessment, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM; JEOL USA, Inc., FE-SEM IT800, Massachusetts, USA) analysis. The ability of seashells to prevent the attachment of Streptococcus mutans and form a biofilm with and without periostracum was studied by crystal violet assay. Results The results revealed that shells without periostracum promoted higher biofilm formation when compared to those having intact periostracum (by 15%, p<0.001). Shell 1 showed the highest biofilm formation, whereas shell 3 showed the least biofilm formation due to the differences in their surface morphologies. The remaining shells (4, 2, 6, and 5) showed interspersed biofilm formation. Conclusion In summary, our study was able to correlate the topologies of the shell surface with the biofilm formed by Streptococcus mutans with the wetting behavior of those shell surfaces and their roughness. More hydrophobic surfaces (with intact periostracum) were observed to lead to less attachment (correlation coefficient=-0.67). This study can pave the way for designing such biomimetic surfaces to prevent bacterial attachment.

THE EFFECT OF REINFORCED POLYETHYLENE FIBER ON FLOWABLE RESIN COMPOSITE AS SPLINTING MATERIAL ON ATTACHEMENT OF Streptoccocus mutans

Introduction : Tooth mobility is one of the symptoms of periodontal disease which is characterized by loss of attachment and vertical bone damage. One method to overcome this is by splinting. The development of dental materials science has resulted in an innovative splinting technique using a thin band of material, easily bonded, consisting of a series of criss-crossed strands of thin polyethylene fibers. Fiber in the oral cavity will interact with saliva and microorganisms, especially Streptococcus mutans. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of adding polyethylene fiber to flowable composite resin as a splinting material on the attachment of Streptococcus mutans. Materials and Methods: This research method was an experimental laboratory using a post-test only control group design. Samples in the form of blocks with a size of 5x4x2 mm were immersed in artificial saliva for 1 hour then soaked in liquid medium containing Streptococcus mutans and incubated for 2x24 hours, diluted to 100 or dilution of 10-2 then 0.1 mL of liquid medium put into TYC agar media in petridishes and incubated at 37oC for 48 hours anaerobically. Results and Discussion: Statistical tests showed that the addition of polyethylene fiber to the flow composite resin splinting material increased the attachment of Streptococcus mutans bacteria . The results of the Saphiro-Wilk test showed that the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria in each group was normally distributed (p&gt;0.05). Lavene's test results obtained a statistical levene value of 0.695 with a significance value of 0.410 &gt; 0.05, this proves that the data used is homogeneous. In the One Way Anova test, it can be seen that the sig value is 0.000 (p&lt;0.05). From the results of the analysis with LSD shows there is a significant difference in treatment between variables. Conclusion: From the results of the study, there is an influence of the addition of polyethylene fiber to flowable composite resins as a splinting material on increasing the attachment of Streptococcus mutans.

Characterization of Effective Native Lactic Acid Bacteria as Potential Oral Probiotics on Growth Inhibition of Streptococcus mutans

Background and Objective: Probiotics' effects on harmful oral bacteria have been verifed. As antibiotic resistance becomes a major problem, searching for novel potential species is important. The objective of this study was to select novel safe strains of lactic acid bacteria with potentials as oral probiotics. Furthermore, ability of these strains to suppress growth and attachment of Streptococcus mutans as the most important cariogenic bacteria in tooth decay was investigated. Material and Methods: Initial identification tests, including Gram staining and catalase and oxidase tests, were carried out on 22 strains of lactic acid bacteria isolated from Iranian traditional dairy products. Safety of the strains was assessed using hemolysis test and antibiotic resistance assessment. Strains were then assessed for probiotic characteristics such inhibition of Streptococcus mutans growth, tolerance to lysozyme enzymes and ability of adhesion as well as ability of decreasing Streptococcus mutans adhesion. Selected strains were identified using16S rRNA molecular method. Results and Conclusion: Of all strains, four strains with the optimal probiotic characteristics were selected. These included one Lactobacillus brevis, one Lactobacillus casei and two Lactobacillus paraceasei. These four strains showed strong antimicrobial characteristics against Streptococcus mutans, were resistant to oral lysozyme enzymes and included high adhesion abilities to polystyrene wells. Furthermore, they decreased Streptococcus mutans attachment; thus, biofilm formation by this bacterium was prevented. These strains were recognized as safe strains since they were approved in assessments of antibiotic susceptibility and hemolytic activity. The effect of carbamide peroxide on surface enamel structural changes and streptococcus mutans attachment

Background: Home bleaching with carbamide peroxide is commonly used due to its high success rate and minimum side effects. Although home bleaching is safe, it causes structural changes in surface enamel, thereby facilitating Streptococcus mutans attachment on the enamel surface. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the effect of carbamide peroxide concentration on surface enamel structural changes and S. mutans attachment. Methods: Healthy, caries-free, and calculus-free upper first premolars were divided into 10%, 15%, and 35% carbamide peroxide concentration groups, with five samples in each group. Structural changes in the surface enamel of the teeth before and after the bleaching procedure were assessed subjectively based on observations using a stereomicroscope at × 40. The samples were inoculated in S. mutans culture and incubated for 24 h (37°C) in anaerobic conditions. The samples were then washed with phosphate-buffered saline, and bacterial attachment was released by vortexing for 1 min. Effectiveness of 2% Black Tea (Camellia sinensis) Infusion in Increasing Salivary pH and Fluoride in Children Increasing Salivary pH and Fluoride in Children

Background: Black tea is the most commonly consumed tea in Indonesia. Black tea has antibacterial effects and it can inhibit the attachment of Streptococcus mutans to enamel. Objective: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of 2% black tea infusion and 0.2% fluoride solution mouth rinses in increasing pH and salivary fluoride levels for one month in children aged 7-8 years. Methods: This study was experimental study with double-blind randomized controlled trial design. The subjects were 28 first grade students of a state elementary school derived through a simple random sampling technique. The salivary pH was measured with the help of a digital pH meter and the salivary fluoride level was measured using UV-VIS TECAN Infinite M200 Pro® Spectrophotometer. Results: The results of the Independent T-Test showed that there was no statistically significant difference between the group of students who washed their mouths using 2% black tea infusion and the students who used 0.2% fluoride solution mouthwash (p<0.05). Conclusions: Mouth rinsing with 2% black tea infusion had equal effectiveness with 0.2% fluoride solution in increasing pH and salivary fluoride levels.

The response of human osteoblasts, epithelial cells, fibroblasts, macrophages and oral bacteria to nanostructured titanium surfaces: a systematic study.

Nanotopography modification is a major focus of interest in current titanium surface design; however, the influence of the nanostructured surface on human cell/bacterium behavior has rarely been systematically evaluated. In this study, a homogeneous nanofiber structure was prepared on a titanium surface (Nano) by alkali-hydrothermal treatment, and the effects of this Nano surface on the behaviors of human MG-63 osteoblasts, human gingival epithelial cells (HGECs) and human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) were evaluated in comparison with a smooth titanium surface (Smooth) by polishing and a micro-rough titanium surface (Micro) by sandblasting and acid etching. In addition, the impacts of these different surface morphologies on human THP-1 macrophage polarization and Streptococcus mutans attachment were also assessed. Our findings showed that the nanostructured surface enhanced the osteogenic activity of MG-63 cells (Nano=Micro>Smooth) at the same time that it improved the attachment of HGECs (Nano>Smooth>Micro) and HGFs (Nano=Micro>Smooth). Furthermore, the surface with nanotexture did not affect macrophage polarization (Nano=Micro=Smooth), but did reduce initial bacterial adhesion (Nano<Smooth<Micro). These results suggest that the nanostructured titanium surface may promote bone and soft tissue healing, and thereby increase the success and survival of dental implants.

Quercitrin-nanocoated titanium surfaces favour gingival cells against oral bacteria.

Many dental implants fail due to the infection and inflammation that walk hand in hand with poor healing and soft tissue integration. Titanium surfaces were nanocoated with quercitrin, a natural flavonoid, with the aim to improve soft tissue integration and increase dental implants success. Streptococcus mutans attachment and biofilm formation was analysed. Then, the anti-inflammatory properties and the potential of quercitrin-nanocoated surfaces to boost soft tissue regeneration were tested using human gingival fibroblasts. An inflammatory situation was mimicked using interleulin-1-beta. We found that quercitrin-nanocoated surfaces decreased initial bacterial adhesion while increasing human gingival fibroblasts attachment. Furthermore, quercitrin-nanocoated Ti increased collagen mRNA levels and decreased matrix metalloproteinase-1/tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinanse-1 mRNA ratio, which is related to a reduced metalloproteinase-mediated collagen degradation, while also decreasing the pro-inflammatory prostaglandin E2 release under basal and inflammatory conditions. These results suggest that quercitrin-nanocoated surfaces could enhance the soft tissue integration and increase dental implants success.

Bacterial Resistance Control on Mineral Surfaces of Hydroxyapatite and Human Teeth via Surface Charge-Driven Antifouling Coatings

This works reports a set of new functionalized polyethyleneimine (PEI) polymers, including a neutral PEGylated polymer PEI-g-PEGMA, a negatively charged polymer PEI-g-SA, and a zwitterionic polymer PEI-g-SBMA, and their use as antibiofouling coating agent for human teeth protection. Polymers were synthesized by Michael addition, XPS analysis revealed that each polymer could be efficiently coated onto hydroxyapatite, ceramic material used as a model tooth. Polymers carrying a negative net charge were more efficiently adsorbed, because of the establishment of electrostatic interactions with calcium ions. Protein adsorption tests revealed that two factors were important in the reduction of protein adsorption. Both the surface charge and the surface ability to bind and entrap water molecules had to be considered. PEI-g-SBMA, which zeta potential in PBS solution was negative, was efficient to inhibit the adsorption of BSA, a negative protein. On the other hand, it also resisted the adsorption of lysozyme, a positive protein, because zwitterionic molecules can easily entrap water and provide a very hydrophilic environment. Streptococcus mutans attachment tests performed unveiled that all modified polymers were efficient to resist this type of bacteria responsible for dental carries. Best results were also obtained with PEI-g-SBMA coating. This polymer was also shown to efficiently resist the adsorption of positively charged bacteria (Stenotrophomonas maltophilia). Tests performed on real human tooth showed that PEI-g-SBMA could inhibit up to 70% of bacteria adhesion, which constitutes a major result considering that surface of teeth is very rough, therefore physically promoting the attachment of proteins and bacteria.

The Effect of Curcumin against &lt;i&gt;In Vitro&lt;/i&gt; Adhesion of Implant Device-Associated Bacteria on Nanosized Titanium Dioxide

Although titanium dioxide (TiO2) is an implantable biomaterial with its antibacterial activity, infection on TiO2 surfaces remains a problem for medical settings. According to our previous studies, curcumin, the main component of turmeric (Curcuma longa), partially hindered the attachment of Streptococcus mutans to human tooth surfaces. Therefore, it was examined whether several implant device-associated bacteria were able to adhere to nanosized TiO2 surfaces. In addition, the effect of curcumin on the bacterial adhesion was investigated. Bacterial strains were cultured on pure Ti and TiO2 surfaces with various nanotube sizes in the absence or presence of curcumin and observed by scanning electron microscopy. Consequently, most bacteria adhered to Ti and TiO2 surfaces. However, curcumin increased the adhesion of bacteria including S. mutans. The results suggest that bacterial adhesion to implant titanium surfaces can be augmented via curcumin ingestion.

Potential mechanisms for the effects of tea extracts on the attachment, biofilm formation and cell size of Streptococcus mutans

Tea can inhibit the attachment of Streptococcus mutans to surfaces and subsequent biofilm formation. Five commercial tea extracts were screened for their ability to inhibit attachment and biofilm formation by two strains of S. mutans on glass and hydroxyapatite surfaces. The mechanisms of these effects were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and phytochemical screening. The results indicated that extracts of oolong tea most effectively inhibited attachment and extracts of pu-erh tea most effectively inhibited biofilm formation. SEM images showed that the S. mutans cells treated with extracts of oolong tea, or grown in medium containing extracts of pu-erh tea, were coated with tea components and were larger with more rounded shapes. The coatings on the cells consisted of flavonoids, tannins and indolic compounds. The ratio of tannins to simple phenolics in each of the coating samples was ∼3:1. This study suggests potential mechanisms by which tea components may inhibit the attachment and subsequent biofilm formation of S. mutans on tooth surfaces, such as modification of cell surface properties and blocking of the activity of proteins and the structures used by the bacteria to interact with surfaces.

Synthesis and characterization of dimethacrylates containing quaternary ammonium functionalities for dental applications

Objectives The widespread incidence of recurrent caries highlights the need for improved dental restorative materials. The objective of this study was to synthesize low viscosity ionic dimethacrylate monomers (IDMAs) that contain quaternary ammoniums groups (antimicrobial functionalities) and are compatible with existing dental dimethacrylate-based monomers. Such monomers have the potential to copolymerize with other methacrylate monomers and produce antibacterial polymers. Methods Two monomers (IDMA-1 and IDMA-2) were synthesized using the Menschutkin reaction and incorporated at 0–30% (by mass) into a 1:1 (by mass) bisphenol A glycerolate dimethacrylate (BisGMA):triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) resin. Resin viscosity was quantified using rheology, and polymer degree of conversion (DC) and surface charge density were measured using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and fluorescein binding, respectively. Effects of IDMA-1 on initial attachment of Streptococcus mutans and on viability and metabolic activity (via reductase enzymes) of RAW 264.7 macrophage-like cells were quantified. Results IDMA-1 and IDMA-2 were prepared and characterized. IDMA-1 was miscible with BisGMA:TEGDMA and slightly increased the resin viscosity and DC. As expected, polymeric surface charge density increased with increasing IDMA-1. Incorporation of 10% IDMA-1 into BisGMA:TEGDMA reduced bacterial colonization without affecting viability or metabolic activity of mammalian cells. Increasing IDMA-1 up to 30% had no additional effect on bacterial coverage, but ≥20% IDMA-1 significantly reduced macrophage density, viability, and metabolic activity. Leachables from polymers containing IDMA-1 were not cytotoxic. Significance The Menschutkin reaction provides a facile, convenient means to synthesize new monomers with quaternary ammonium groups for dental and medical applications.

Streptococcus mutans GS-5 antigen I/II stimulates cell survival in serum deprived-cultures through PI3K/Akt pathways

The antigen I/II (AgI/II) protein is a major surface protein that mediates the attachment of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) to the saliva-coated pellicle. Numerous studies have investigated not only the mechanisms by which AgI/II signaling is transduced within cells, but have also attempted to use AgI/II-specific antibodies to treat dental caries and host immune responses. However, little information is available about the effects of AgI/II on basic cellular events in bone cells. In this study, we examined the effects of the His-tagged recombinant N-terminal half of the AgI/II protein (rAgI/II-N) generated from S. mutans GS-5 on the viability, proliferation, and cell cycle progression of primary calvarial osteoblasts. We also investigated the mechanisms involved in the rAgI/II-N-mediated survival of serum-starved osteoblasts. We found that rAgI/II treatment attenuated the serum deprivation-induced decrease in cell viability and proliferation of osteoblasts. rAgI/II-N also prevented the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), alterations in levels of two key mitochondrial Bcl-2 family proteins, and the accumulation of numerous cells into the sub-G(1) phase that were observed in serum-starved osteoblasts. Pharmacological inhibitors of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), but not of extracellular signal-regulated kinase or Ras, blocked the rAgI/II-N-mediated protection against serum deprivation-induced cell death. Additional experiments revealed that the integrin α5β1-mediated PI3K pathway is required for rAgI/II-N-mediated Akt phosphorylation in osteoblasts. Collectively, these results suggest that rAgI/II-N induces survival signals in serum-starved osteoblasts through integrin-induced PI3K/Akt signaling pathways.

Streptococcus mutans attachment on a cast titanium surface

This study examined by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the attachment of Streptococcus mutans and the corrosion of cast commercially pure titanium, used in dental dentures. The sample discs were cast in commercially pure titanium using the vacuum-pressure machine (Rematitan System). The surfaces of each metal were ground and polished with sandpaper (#300-4000) and alumina paste (0.3 µm). The roughness of the surface (Ra) was measured using the Surfcorder rugosimeter SE 1700. Four coupons were inserted separately into Falcon tubes contained Mueller Hinton broth inoculated with S. mutans ATCC 25175 (10(9) cuf) and incubated at 37 °C. The culture medium was changed every three days during a 365-day period, after which the falcons were prepared for observations by SEM. The mean Ra value of CP Ti was 0.1527 µm. After S. mutans biofilm removal, pits of corrosion were observed. Despite the low roughness, S. mutans attachment and biofilm formation was observed, which induced a surface corrosion of the cast pure titanium.

A DNA vaccine encoding a cell-surface protein antigen of Streptococcus mutans protects gnotobiotic rats from caries.

A cell-surface protein antigen (PAc) of Streptococcus mutans is considered a virulence factor because it may mediate initial attachment of Streptococcus mutans to tooth surfaces. Thus, inhibiting PAc is predicted to provide protection against caries. To develop vaccines against dental caries, we constructed a DNA vaccine, pCIA-P, which encodes two high-conservative regions of PAc. Expression of the recombinant protein was obtained in eukaryotic cells in vitro and in vivo. In this report, we provide evidence that fewer caries lesions, and high levels of PAc-specific salivary IgA antibody and serum IgG antibody, were observed in gnotobiotic rats following targeted salivary gland (TSG) administration of pCIA-P. This study shows that the recombinant DNA vaccine pCIA-P could induce protective anti-caries immune responses and that TSG immunization is a promising strategy for the inhibition of dental caries.

Antigenic characterization of fimbria preparations from Streptococcus mutans isolates from caries-free and caries-susceptible subjects.

The adhesion of pathogenic bacteria to the host surface is an essential step in the development of numerous infections, including dental caries. Attachment of Streptococcus mutans, the main etiological agent of human dental caries, to the tooth surface may be mediated by glucan synthesized by glucosyltransferase (GTF) and by cell surface proteins, such as P1, which bind to salivary receptors. Fimbriae on the surfaces of many microorganisms are known to function in bacterial adhesion. Previous studies in this laboratory have initially characterized the fibrillar surface of S. mutans. The purpose of this investigation was the comparison of the antigenic properties of fimbria preparations of S. mutans isolates from five caries-resistant (CR) and six caries-susceptible (CS) subjects. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis of S. mutans fimbrial preparations revealed five major protein bands at 200, 175, 157, 86, and 66 kDa in preparations from CR and CS subjects. Immunoblot analysis indicated the presence of the same major bands recognized by anti-S. mutans fimbria antisera. Furthermore, the 175- and 157-kDa bands were recognized by antibodies to P1 and GTF, respectively. Immunoblot analysis with antisera to the fimbria preparation, to P1, or to GTF indicated that the levels of fimbria-reactive components and P1 and GTF antigens were higher in S. mutans fimbria preparations from CS subjects than in those from CR individuals. For example, four of six fimbria preparations from CS patients had demonstrable P1, and all had GTF. In contrast, only two of five CR fimbrial preparations exhibited P1 and GTF. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay demonstrated similar results for levels of GTF antigen in the fimbrial preparations from CR and CS subjects. The results suggest that differences between the compositions of S. mutans fimbriae in CR and CS individuals may play an important role in the virulence of this microorganism in dental caries.

A protein fragment of streptococcal cell surface antigen I/II which prevents adhesion of Streptococcus mutans.

Attachment of Streptococcus mutans to the tooth surface involves a cell surface protein with an M(r) of 185,000, termed streptococcal antigen (SA) I/II. Four overlapping fragments of the gene encoding SA I/II were amplified by polymerase chain reaction, cloned, and expressed in Escherichia coli. The recombinant polypeptides were assayed for adhesion-binding activity to salivary receptors and for recognition by a panel of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) raised against SA I/II. Two of the MAbs which are known to prevent colonization of S. mutans in vivo bound the recombinant polypeptide comprising residues 816 to 1161. In vitro adhesion of S. mutans to saliva-coated hydroxyapatite beads was also inhibited specifically by a polypeptide (residues 816 to 1213) encompassing the same region. The evidence from the MAbs preventing colonization of S. mutans and the adherence inhibition assay suggests that an adhesion-binding activity resides within the portion of SA I/II comprising residues 816 to 1213, which is highly conserved among oral streptococcal species.

Modulation of bacterial binding to salivary pellicle by treatment with hydrophilizing compounds

Two hydrophilizing agents, a branched polyethylene glycol derivative and a non-ionic cellulose ether (EHEC) bind to buffer-treated hydroxyapatite and prevent attachment of Streptococcus mutans. EHEC gives a more efficient surface modification, presumably due to a more complete surface coverage. Neither of the 2 hydrophilizing agents were effective on hydroxyapatite which had been pre-treated with saliva. In a small clinical trial, EHEC was found to be moderately effective in preventing plaque formation.

Growth and adsorption of Streptococcus mutans 6715-13 to hydroxyapatite in the presence of lactoferrin.

The growth of Streptococcus mutans 6715-13 in a rich medium (Todd Hewitt broth) was drastically reduced by addition of apo-lactoferrin (apo-Lf); this effect was bacteriostatic and reversible by saturation of Lf with iron. The influence of Lf, salivary proteins (SP) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) on the attachment of Streptococcus mutans to hydroxyapatite (HA) was successively investigated. Sorption of Lf, SP, and BSA to HA was dependent on the protein concentration and reached the end-point at about 80 mg of proteins per gram of HA. Similarly, the number of streptococci adsorbed to HA was correlated to the amount of cells available up to at least 10(7) cells per mg of HA. The adsorption of Lf, SP and BSA on HA reduced the number of attaching S. mutans cells. In particular, SP reduced the adsorption of S. mutans by 30%, whereas pre-coating of HA with apo- or iron-saturated Lf resulted in a three orders of magnitude reduction of S. mutans adsorption to HA, as demonstrated by means of different experimental procedures. The powerful adherence-inhibiting effect of apo-Lf together with its noticeable antibacterial activity towards S. mutans points to a biological significance of these phenomena also in vivo.

Multiple forms of dextran-binding proteins from Streptococcus mutans.

We have isolated a series of five proteins which appear to possess characteristic individual capacities for synthesizing dextrans and binding dextrans. Our suggestion that these proteins comprise an isozyme-like distribution of lectin and enzyme activities is, of course, very speculative and remains to be rigourously confirmed. However, the very identification of these several dextran binding proteins provides a biochemical basis to explain numerous observations suggesting that more than one mechanism for dextran binding is possessed by S. mutans (for instance: 24-27), especially the observations with mutants (24). These proteins probably are the molecular determinants of host infection by S. mutans and may prove to be potent immunogens for use in a vaccine. The presence of a dextran-binding lectin in S. mutans implicates this bacterial lectin in the earliest stage of infection: Attachment to host tissues. The multiplicity of proteins possessing characteristic dextran-synthesizing and dextran-binding capacities indicates the complexity of the adherence mechanisms evolved in S. mutans. Experiments with other bacteria (10-12, 28) suggest that bacterial lectins, in concert with host tissue carbohydrates, may be the molecular mediators of host recognition and subsequent initial attachment of bacterial cells to host tissues in non-pathogenic as well as pathogenic bacteria.
