Vapour pressure deficit affects crop water productivity, yield, and quality in tomatoes

A high atmospheric vapour pressure deficit (VPD) hinders calcium absorption in tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.), which severely reduces tomato yield, crop water productivity (WPcrop), and quality. Although reducing the VPD is effective for increasing tomato yield and water productivity, regulating the VPD is costly. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the effects of VPD regulation (high VPD=2.22 kPa, low VPD=0.95 kPa) during different growth stages on tomato WPcrop, yield, and quality to identify a VPD management method that saves costs and enhances the above parameters. The results showed that the yield was significantly positively correlated with fruit calcium absorption. Decreasing the VPD during the fruit expansion stage and increasing it during the flowering stage significantly increased calcium accumulation in the fruits, thereby improving tomato WPcrop, yield, and quality. Additionally, a high VPD during the flowering stage increased stomatal conductance and mesophyll conductance, thereby increasing intercellular and chloroplast CO2 concentrations and enhancing plant photosynthetic capacity, and reduced the stem water potential, leaf water potential, and leaf relative water content, thereby increasing the water potential difference, leaf hydraulic conductance, and calcium absorption. By integrating game theory and the technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution method, a comprehensive analysis of tomato appearance, nutrients, and flavour quality revealed that growing plants under a high VPD during the seedling, flowering, and fruit ripening stages and a low VPD during the fruit expansion stage not only enhanced the comprehensive tomato quality value but also maximally reduced the humidification cost. Conclusively, controlling the environmental VPD at 2.22 kPa during the seedling, flowering, and fruit ripening stages and at 0.95 kPa during the fruit expansion stage can effectively increase tomato WPcrop, yield, and quality. This study provides a theoretical basis for the environmental regulation of high-quality, efficient, and water-conserving cultivation of greenhouse tomatoes.

Global convergence in terrestrial gross primary production response to atmospheric vapor pressure deficit.

Atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD) increases with climate warming and may limit plant growth. However, gross primary production (GPP) responses to VPD remain a mystery, offering a significant source of uncertainty in the estimation of global terrestrial ecosystems carbon dynamics. In this study, in-situ measurements, satellite-derived data, and Earth System Models (ESMs) simulations were analysed to show that the GPP of most ecosystems has a similar threshold in response to VPD: first increasing and then declining. When VPD exceeds these thresholds, atmospheric drought stress reduces soil moisture and stomatal conductance, thereby decreasing the productivity of terrestrial ecosystems. Current ESMs underscore CO2 fertilization effects but predict significant GPP decline in low-latitude ecosystems when VPD exceeds the thresholds. These results emphasize the impacts of climate warming on VPD and propose limitations to future ecosystems productivity caused by increased atmospheric water demand. Incorporating VPD, soil moisture, and canopy conductance interactions into ESMs enhances the prediction of terrestrial ecosystem responses to climate change.

Differentiated influences of atmospheric dryness on urban plant cooling effect between temperate and tropical/subtropical zones

Atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD) is a critical variable related to water flux that may either promote or limit plant evapotranspiration under different conditions, consequentially, influencing the effect of urban vegetation on mitigating urban heat island. However, how VPD influence the cooling effect of urban vegetation in different climate zones, have not been examined to date. Here, we combined field observations of 3634 samples from the global published literature and satellite data to investigate the spatial-temporal impacts of VPD on vegetation cooling and reveal the pathways of “atmospheric dryness-evapotranspiration-climate effect”. Our results showed that the cooling effect was generally remarkable in urban areas in the humid season of the tropical/subtropical zones and in the warm season of temperate zones. In the tropical/subtropical zones, the cooling effect was enhanced with increasing VPD across the range of low VPD, but was obviously constrained by high atmospheric dryness when VPD exceeded 9.43 hPa. In contrast, the cooling effects of urban vegetation were gradually strengthened as VPD increased in temperate zones. Notably, tropical and subtropical urban vegetation began to exert a great cooling effect when evapotranspiration per unit leaf area was >31.93 mm/month. Our findings suggest that stronger constraints of atmospheric dryness on cooling effect in the tropical/subtropical zones versus the temperate zone. These findings provide important insights for understanding the patterns of urban vegetation response to atmospheric dryness. They can also assist managers and decision-makers in optimizing the design of urban green space in different geographic locations.

Vegetation and Evapotranspiration Responses to Increased Atmospheric Vapor Pressure Deficit across the Global Forest

A forest is vulnerable to drought and plays important roles in the regulation of carbon and water cycling in a terrestrial ecosystem. Atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD) has been identified as an increasingly major factor in plant functioning and has been established as a main contributor to recent drought-induced plant mortality, independent of other drivers associated with climate change. However, most previous studies have focused on the effects of climate warming and CO2 enrichment on vegetation growth, without considering the effects of an increased VPD on vegetation growth and evapotranspiration (ET) in forest ecosystems. This could lead to a large uncertainty in estimating the variability in forest carbon sinks. Based on the long-term satellite data, we investigated the response of the leaf area index (LAI) and ET to the VPD via a partial correlation analysis in this study. We also examined the temporal variability in the partial coefficients within a ten-year moving window. The results showed that over 50% of the region displayed a negative partial correlation between the LAI, ET, and VPD, and those pixels were mainly concentrated in North America and the plains of Eastern Europe. Regions with a negative trend of partial correlation in both the LAI and ET are mostly located in the plains of Eastern Europe and the Siberian Plain of western Russia, while the positive trend is mainly in South America. The plains of Eastern Europe are becoming drier, which was proved by the interannual trend of the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and soil water content (SWC). Additionally, the LAI and ET in those areas exhibited a significant positive correlation with the SWC based on the moving window average. This study suggests that the role of the VPD on vegetation will become increasingly prominent in the context of future climate change for the forest ecosystem.

Global evidence of rapid flash drought recovery by extreme precipitation

Flash drought affects agricultural activities and water availability. However, the rate of flash drought development and termination and their controlling mechanisms remain mostly unexplored. Using climate reanalysis (ERA5) datasets, we examine the flash drought development and recovery rates in seventeen climate regions across the globe during the 1981–2020 period. In most global climate regions, flash drought recovery (25.2 percentile/pentad) is faster than its development rate (17.2 percentile/pentad). The tropical and sub-tropical humid areas, particularly eastern North America, northern South America, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Islands groups, are the hotspots of rapid flash drought development and faster recovery rates. In most climate regions, flash drought development and recovery rates have considerably increased during the recent two decades. Pluvial events (heavy-to-extreme precipitation) associated with increased soil moisture and decreased atmospheric aridity vapor pressure deficit are the primary driver of the rapid flash drought recovery. Globally, 10 of 17 regions showed the dominance of extreme precipitation in flash drought recovery, primarily due to an increase in the frequency of extreme precipitation. A fraction of flash droughts terminated by extreme precipitation has increased significantly across the most regions during 1981–2020. Considering the increase in flash drought frequency, development rate, and rapid termination, the compound risk of flash droughts followed by extreme precipitation and flooding has enhanced. The abrupt transition from flash drought to wet conditions makes drought and flood management more challenging, with consequences for agriculture and water resources.

Impacts of elevated CO2 levels and temperature on photosynthesis and stomatal closure along an altitudinal gradient are counteracted by the rising atmospheric vapor pressure deficit

The efficiency of water use in plants, a critical ecophysiological parameter closely related to water and carbon cycles, is essential for understanding the interactions between plants and their environment. This study investigates the effects of ongoing climate change and increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration on intrinsic (stomata-based; iWUE) and evaporative (transpiration-based; eWUE) water use efficiency in oak trees along a naturally small altitudinal gradient (130–630 m a.s.l.) of Vihorlat Mountains (eastern Slovakia, Central Europe). To assess changes in iWUE and eWUE values over the past 60 years (1961–2020), stable carbon isotope ratios in latewood cellulose (δ13Ccell) of annually resolved tree rings were analyzed. Such an approach was sensitive enough to distinguish tree responses to growth environments at different altitudes. Our findings revealed a rising trend in iWUE, particularly in oak trees at low and middle altitudes. However, this increase was negligible at high altitudes. Warmer and drier conditions at lower altitudes likely led to significant stomatal closure and enhanced efficiency in photosynthetic CO2 uptake due to rising CO2 concentration. Conversely, the increasing intracellular-to-ambient CO2 ratio (Ci/Ca) at higher altitudes indicated lower efficiency in photosynthetic CO2 uptake. In contrast to iWUE, eWUE showed no increasing trends over the last 60 years. This suggests that the positive impacts of elevated CO2 concentrations and temperature on photosynthesis and stomatal closure are counteracted by the rising atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD). These differences underscore the importance of the correct interpretation of stomata-based and transpiration-based WUEs and highlight the necessity of atmospheric VPD correction when applying tree-ring δ13C-derived WUE at ecosystem and global levels.

Twenty years of irrigation acclimation is driven by denser canopies and not by plasticity in twig- and needle-level hydraulics in a Pinus sylvestris forest.

Climate change is predicted to increase atmospheric vapor pressure deficit, exacerbating soil drought, and thus enhancing tree evaporative demand and mortality. Yet, few studies have addressed the longer-term drought acclimation strategy of trees, particularly the importance of morphological vs. hydraulic plasticity. Using a long-term (20 years) irrigation experiment in a natural forest, we investigated the acclimation of Pinus sylvestris morpho-anatomical (stomatal anatomy and crown density) and hydraulic traits (leaf water potential, vulnerability to cavitation Ψ50, hydraulic conductivity Ks, and tree water deficit TWD) to prolonged changes in soil moisture. We found that low water availability reduced twig water potential and increased TWD during the growing season. Still, the trees showed limited adjustments in most branch-level hydraulic traits (Ψ50 and Ks) and needle anatomy. In contrast, trees acclimated to prolonged irrigation by increasing their crown density and, hence, the canopy water demand. This study demonstrates that despite substantial canopy adjustments, P. sylvestris may be vulnerable to extreme droughts because of limited adjustment potential in their hydraulic system. While sparser canopies reduce the water demand, such shifts take decades to occur under chronic water deficits and might not mitigate short-term extreme drought events.

Spatiotemporal variability of evapotranspiration in Alpine grasslands and its biotic and abiotic drivers

AbstractTo gain a deeper understanding of the water balances of Alpine grassland ecosystems, it is crucial to know the abiotic and biotic drivers of evapotranspiration. The abiotic drivers are very heterogeneous in mountain regions because elevation, slope and aspect control incoming Rs, and atmospheric layering affect air temperature, humidity and wind distribution. In a study with 24 lysimeter plots distributed over a study area of approx. 300 km2 in the Eastern Alps, we covered a wide range of topographic conditions. We investigated the effects of abiotic drivers on evapotranspiration by measuring evaporation from a free‐water body (Ew). For the biological modulation of crop evapotranspiration (ETc), we analysed two different grassland types (at peak biomass and at low biomass) and calculated the respective crop coefficients (Kc). Results showed that primarily physical drivers such as the accumulated solar radiation from sunrise to measurement (Rs_acc), followed by atmospheric pressure (P), wind speed (u) and vapour pressure deficit (VPD) influence both Ew and ETc. Moreover, ETc is also significantly influenced by standing biomass and the grassland type (i.e., resource use strategies of the vegetation types) and by the geographic location along the valley (i.e., entrance, middle and head of the valley). We suppose plant stress and/or ground winds to be the underlying factor for the significance of the geographic location, yet further research is needed. The current study helps towards a better understanding of the water balance in alpine grassland ecosystems, but we also show that some spatial drivers cannot yet be adequately addressed.

The impacts of rising vapour pressure deficit in natural and managed ecosystems.

An exponential rise in the atmospheric vapour pressure deficit (VPD) is among the most consequential impacts of climate change in terrestrial ecosystems. Rising VPD has negative and cascading effects on nearly all aspects of plant function including photosynthesis, water status, growthand survival. These responses are exacerbated by land-atmosphere interactions that couple VPD to soil water and govern the evolution of drought, affecting a range of ecosystem services including carbon uptake, biodiversity, the provisioning of water resourcesand crop yields. However, despite the global nature of this phenomenon, research on how to incorporate these impacts into resilient management regimes is largely in its infancy, due in part to the entanglement of VPD trends with those of other co-evolving climate drivers. Here, we review the mechanistic bases of VPD impacts at a range of spatial scales, paying particular attention to the independent and interactive influence of VPD in the context of other environmental changes. We then evaluate the consequences of these impacts within key management contexts, including water resources, croplands, wildfire risk mitigationand management of natural grasslands and forests. We conclude with recommendations describing how management regimes could be altered to mitigate the otherwise highly deleterious consequences of rising VPD.

Effects of site aridity and species on stand transpiration in high-elevation dryland ecosystems

Climate change is altering regional aridity and species composition in dryland ecosystems. Understanding the effects of long-term increasing aridity and species-specific stomatal behaviors on transpiration is therefore important for water-resource forecasting. To assess the effects of site aridity levels and species on stand transpiration rate (Es), we monitored sap flux density (Js) and relevant environmental parameters for 16 isohydric Picea crassifolia (spruce) and 14 anisohydric Juniperus przewalskii (juniper) trees over three growing seasons at four arid to semi-arid high-elevation sites on the Tibetan Plateau. Our results show that Es was about 5–9 times higher in semi-arid sites than in arid sites, and about 6–9 times higher in spruce than in juniper. Spruce exhibited stronger stomatal regulation of transpiration than juniper. Soil water supply strongly promoted Js only for spruce in the arid environment (R2 = 0.23), while at the other sites, Js was mostly controlled by atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD) (R2 > 0.82). However, increasing site aridity greatly reduced the sensitivities of both Js and canopy conductance to VPD, especially for juniper. We expect that in the transition from semi-arid to arid alpine forests, Es will initially rise due to increasing VPD. However, in the long term, there may be a stronger decline in Es since both the sensitivity of Js to VPD and the stand sapwood area will decrease. These findings could be used to reduce the impacts of climate change on water resources in high-elevation drylands.

Is interannual grain yield decline of intermediate wheatgrass influenced by management and climate in the Upper Midwest?

Perennial crops have the potential to provide sustainable food production while promoting multiple ecosystem services. Intermediate wheatgrass (IWG) is a perennial grass that is currently being domesticated as a perennial grain crop. However, one major hurdle limiting producer adoption is its interannual grain yield decline. While such a phenomenon has an evolutionary basis and has been reported in other perennial grain crops, there are currently conflicting reports about the extent of this phenomenon in IWG. To address this challenge, we have assembled a unique dataset integrating 13 field experiments conducted by the same research team in Minnesota, USA where IWG yield trials were established over 3–4 years, covering 24 location-years representing 9 treatments and up to 3424 plot-level yield observations. Our goals were to 1) determine the extent and magnitude of IWG yield decline and 2) examine the relative contribution of crop management and climate in mitigating IWG yield decline if it exists. Our results indicate that IWG grain yield decline starts during the second production year in Minnesota and continues annually at an average rate of 200–225 kg ha−1 yr−1, driven by a reduction in harvest index which declined at a rate of 2% yr−1. This decline occurred regardless of crop management practices, but some approaches, particularly optimal nitrogen application, plant density and cultivar choice increased grain yield potential. IWG productivity was also influenced by environmental gradients, with the strongest effect attributable to rising atmospheric drought or vapor pressure deficit (VPD), which influenced yield decline locally. Overall, the analysis indicated that optimal management, in concert with breeding towards more productive and climate-resilient varieties have the potential to reduce IWG decline in Minnesota.

Warming-induced vapor pressure deficit suppression of vegetation growth diminished in northern peatlands

Recent studies have reported worldwide vegetation suppression in response to increasing atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD). Here, we integrate multisource datasets to show that increasing VPD caused by warming alone does not suppress vegetation growth in northern peatlands. A site-level manipulation experiment and a multiple-site synthesis find a neutral impact of rising VPD on vegetation growth; regional analysis manifests a strong declining gradient of VPD suppression impacts from sparsely distributed peatland to densely distributed peatland. The major mechanism adopted by plants in response to rising VPD is the “open” water-use strategy, where stomatal regulation is relaxed to maximize carbon uptake. These unique surface characteristics evolve in the wet soil‒air environment in the northern peatlands. The neutral VPD impacts observed in northern peatlands contrast with the vegetation suppression reported in global nonpeatland areas under rising VPD caused by concurrent warming and decreasing relative humidity, suggesting model improvement for representing VPD impacts in northern peatlands remains necessary.

Dryness stress weakens the sustainability of global vegetation cooling

Dryness stress can limit vegetation growth, and the cooling potential of vegetation will also be strongly influenced. However, it is still unclear how dryness stress feedback weakens the sustainability of vegetation-based cooling. Based on the long-time series of multi-source remote sensing product data for the period 2001–2020, the relative contribution rate, and the method of decoupling and boxing, we determined that greening will likely mitigate global warming by 0.065 ± 0.009 °C/a, but nearly 47 % of the area is unsustainable. This phenomenon is strongly related to dryness stress. The restricted area of soil moisture (SM: 68.35 %) to vegetation is larger than that of the atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD: 34.19 %). With the decrease in SM, vegetation will decrease by an average of 14.9 %, and with the increase in VPD, vegetation will decrease by 3.8 %. With the continuous increase in the dryness stress area, the sustainability of the vegetation cooling effect will be threatened in an area of about 21.03 million km2, which is equivalent to the area of North America. Specifically, we found that with the decrease in SM and the increase in VPD, the contribution of vegetation to the cooling effect has been weakened by 10.8 %. This conclusion confirms that dryness stress will threaten the sustainability of vegetation-based climate cooling and provides further insight into the effect of dryness stress on vegetation cooling.

Energy balance closure and evapotranspiration hysteresis in central Amazon under contrasting conditions during the GoAmazon project in 2014 and 2015

The Amazon region stands out as Earth's largest and most prominent terrestrial convective center, significantly influencing precipitation patterns through the substantial net radiation at the Earth's surface (Rn). This radiation is further divided into sensible heat (H) and latent heat (LE) fluxes, underscoring the critical need to investigate the intricate exchanges of energy between ecosystems and the atmosphere while also scrutinizing the closure of the energy balance (EBC). Such studies are of paramount importance for gaining a comprehensive understanding of natural process dynamics. This research was undertaken to refine our comprehension of the temporal variability of energy fluxes, energy balance closure, and the phenomenon of evapotranspiration (ET) hysteresis in relation to key atmospheric variables, namely, Rn, air temperature, and vapor pressure deficit (VPD), within the central Amazon region. This investigation spanned a typical year (2014) and accounted for the influence of an El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event (2015). The findings illuminated that LE constituted the predominant component of the energy balance in both years, comprising approximately 70% of the total energy flux, except during the dry season of 2015 when H took precedence, accounting for 55% of the total energy exchange due to the ENSO event. The EBC exhibited an underestimation of turbulent fluxes (H + LE) of around 24% relative to the available energy (Rn - G). A more robust closure was observed during the dry period of 2015, reaching 82%, suggesting heightened uncertainty in LE estimates. In the context of ET, clockwise hysteresis loops were observed concerning air temperature and VPD. The relationship between ET and Rn displayed a linear response to solar radiation, with the intensity of ET hysteresis becoming more pronounced when correlated with air temperature and VPD.

Inter-virus relationships in mixed infections and virus-drought relationships in plants: a quantitative review.

Inter-virus relationships in mixed infections and virus-drought relationships are important in agriculture and natural vegetation. In this quantitative review, we sampled published factorial experiments to probe for relationships against the null hypothesis of additivity. Our sample captured antagonistic, additive and synergistic inter-virus relationships in double infections. Virus-drought relationships in our sample were additive or antagonistic, reinforcing the notion that viruses have neutral or positive effects on droughted plants, or that drought enhances plant tolerance to viruses. Both inter-virus and virus-drought relationships vary with virus species, host plant to the level of cultivar or accession, timing of infection, plant age and trait and growing conditions. The trait-dependence of these relationships has implications for resource allocation in plants. Owing to lagging theories, more experimental research in these fields is bound to return phenomenological outcomes. Theoretical work can advance in two complementary directions. First, the effective theory models the behaviour of the system without specifying all the underlying causes that lead to system state change. Second, mechanistic theory based on a nuanced view of the plant phenotype that explicitly considers downward causation; the influence of the plant phenotype on inter-virus relations and vice versa; the impact of timing, intensity and duration of drought interacting with viruses to modulate the plant phenotype; both the soil (moisture) and atmospheric (vapour pressure deficit) aspects of drought. Theories should scale in time, from short term to full growing season, and in levels of organisation up to the relevant traits: crop yield in agriculture and fitness in nature.

Increasing atmospheric dryness reduces boreal forest tree growth

Rising atmospheric vapour pressure deficit (VPD) associated with climate change affects boreal forest growth via stomatal closure and soil dryness. However, the relationship between VPD and forest growth depends on the climatic context. Here we assess Canadian boreal forest responses to VPD changes from 1951-2018 using a well-replicated tree-growth increment network with approximately 5,000 species-site combinations. Of the 3,559 successful growth models, we observed a relationship between growth and concurrent summer VPD in one-third of the species-site combinations, and between growth and prior summer VPD in almost half of those combinations. The relationship between previous year VPD and current year growth was almost exclusively negative, while current year VPD also tended to reduce growth. Tree species, age, annual temperature, and soil moisture primarily determined tree VPD responses. Younger trees and species like white spruce and Douglas fir exhibited higher VPD sensitivity, as did areas with high annual temperature and low soil moisture. Since 1951, summer VPD increases in Canada have paralleled tree growth decreases, particularly in spruce species. Accelerating atmospheric dryness in the decades ahead will impair carbon storage and societal-economic services.

Decoupling between stomatal conductance and photosynthesis occurs under extreme heat in broadleaf tree species regardless of water access.

High air temperatures increase atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and the severity of drought, threatening forests worldwide. Plants regulate stomata to maximize carbon gain and minimize water loss, resulting in a close coupling between net photosynthesis (Anet ) and stomatal conductance (gs ). However, evidence for decoupling of gs from Anet under extreme heat has been found. Such a response both enhances survival of leaves during heat events but also quickly depletes available water. To understand the prevalence and significance of this decoupling, we measured leaf gas exchange in 26 tree and shrub species growing in the glasshouse or at an urban site in Sydney, Australia on hot days (maximum Tair > 40°C). We hypothesized that on hot days plants with ample water access would exhibit reduced Anet and use transpirational cooling leading to stomatal decoupling, whereas plants with limited water access would rely on other mechanisms to avoid lethal temperatures. Instead, evidence for stomatal decoupling was found regardless of plant water access. Transpiration of well-watered plants was 23% higher than model predictions during heatwaves, which effectively cooled leaves below air temperature. For hotter, droughted plants, the increase in transpiration during heatwaves was even more pronounced-gs was 77% higher than model predictions. Stomatal decoupling was found for most broadleaf evergreen and broadleaf deciduous species at the urban site, including some wilted trees with limited water access. Decoupling may simply be a passive consequence of the physical effects of high temperature on plant leaves through increased cuticular conductance of water vapor, or stomatal decoupling may be an adaptive response that is actively regulated by stomatal opening under high temperatures. This temperature response is not yet included in any land surface model, suggesting that model predictions of evapotranspiration may be underpredicted at high temperature and high VPD.

Realistic Physiological Options to Increase Grain Legume Yield under Drought.

Increasing yield resiliency under water deficits remains a high priority for crop improvement. In considering the yield benefit of a plant trait modification, two facts are often overlooked: (1) the total amount of water available to a crop through a growing season ultimately constrains growth and yield cannot exceed what is possible with the limited amount of available water, and (2) soil water content always changes over time, so plant response needs to be considered within a temporally dynamic context of day-to-day variation in soil water status. Many previous evaluations of drought traits have implicitly considered water deficit from a "static" perspective, but while the static approach of stable water deficit treatments is experimentally congruous, the results are not realistic representations of real-world drought conditions, where soil water levels are always changing. No trait always results in a positive response under all drought scenarios. In this paper, we suggest two key traits for improving grain legume yield under water deficit conditions: (1) partial stomata closure at elevated atmospheric vapor pressure deficit that results in soil water conservation, and (2) lessening of the high sensitivity of nitrogen fixation activity to soil drying.

Exploring the role of HaTIPs genes in enhancing drought tolerance in sunflower.

Activity of plant aquaporins (AQPs) is extremely sensitive to environmental variables such as temperature, drought, atmospheric vapor pressure deficit, cell water status and also appears to be closely associated with the expression of plant tolerance to various stresses. The spatial and temporal expression patterns of genes of Tonoplast Intrinsic Proteins (TIPs) in various crops indicate the complex and diverse regulation of these proteins and are important in understanding their key role in plant growth, development and stress responses. Based on phylogenetic analysis, six distinct HaTIPs were selected for studying their spatial and temporal expression in sunflower (Helianthus annuus). In this study semi quantitative polymerase chain reaction (semi q-PCR) and real time polymerase chain reaction (q-PCR) analysis were used to study the spatial and temporal expression of HaTIPs in sunflower. The results indicated that all of HaTIPs showed differential expression specific to both the tissues and the accessions. Moreover, the expression of all HaTIPs was higher in cross compared to the parents. Results of semi q-PCR and real time PCR indicated an upregulation of expression of HaTIP-RB7 and HaTIP7 in drought tolerant entries at 12h of 20% polyethylene glycol (PEG) treatment compared to 0h. Hence these genes can be utilized as potential target in improving water use efficiency and for further genetic manipulation for the development of drought tolerant sunflower. This study may further contribute to our better understanding regarding the precise role of HaTIPs through their spatial and temporal expression analysis and their application in sunflower drought stress responses.

Weakening amplification of grassland greening to transpiration fraction of evapotranspiration over the Tibetan Plateau during 2001-2020

Evapotranspiration plays a key role in regulating the water cycle in terrestrial ecosystems. Transpiration fraction to evapotranspiration (TF) characterizes the role of vegetation function in evapotranspiration and is a pivot feature for the interactions between soil, ecosystem, and the atmosphere. Generally, the amount of vegetation has the most direct impact to TF, but the sensitivity of TF to vegetation change is not known, which could be a metric to evaluate the role of greening in land-atmosphere water transportation. To address this key knowledge gap, we used remote sensing observations of leaf area index (LAI) as a proxy for vegetation amount and derived the sensitivity of TF to LAI (θ =∂TF∂LAI) for the grasslands over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Results showed there is a substantial decline of θ over the TP during 2001–2020, decreasing from over 4% m−2 m2 to below 1.5% m−2 m2. To analyze the drivers of θ, we introduced a diagnosis framework for soil-atmosphere hydraulic stress shifts based on trends in soil moisture and atmospheric vapor pressure deficit. Results implicated the θ decline over the TP is likely not induced by the dry-wet balance shifts by soil and atmosphere, nor by the vegetation's stomal conductance. Instead, we speculate that the θ decline is induced by a marginal damping effect in case the TF rise is approaching to grassland's limit over the TP. Our finding appeals future studies on terrestrial evapotranspiration to consider the role of vegetation in controlling transpiration and emphasize that greening may not lead to higher TF.
