Estimation of atmospheric refractive index structure constant using an InGaAs/InP single-photon detector.

Remote sensing of atmospheric refractive index structure constant ($\boldsymbol{C}_{\boldsymbol{n}}^2$) using lidar incorporating a single-photon detector (SPD) is proposed. The influence of turbulence on the fiber coupling efficiency with different fiber modes is analyzed. $\boldsymbol{C}_{\boldsymbol{n}}^2$ can be derived from the ratio of the backscattering signals counted on single-mode and multimode fiber-coupling channels of the SPD. In the experiment, by eliminating the shot noise effect on the fluctuation of the ratio, the lowest coupling ratio is used to retrieve $\boldsymbol{C}_{\boldsymbol{n}}^2$ and demonstrated by comparing to the results measured from a large aperture scintillometer (LAS). Good agreement between results from the LAS and the lidar is achieved. The correlation coefficients are 0.90, 0.89, and 0.89, under three different weather conditions.

Novel Detection of Atmospheric Turbulence Profile Using Mie-Scattering Lidar Based on Non-Kolmogorov Turbulence Theory.

Turbulence can cause effects such as light intensity fluctuations and phase fluctuations when a laser is transmitted in the atmosphere, which has serious impacts on a number of optical engineering application effects and on climate improvement. Therefore, accurately obtaining real-time turbulence intensity information using lidar-active remote sensing technology is of great significance. In this paper, based on residual turbulent scintillation theory, a Mie-scattering lidar method was developed to detect atmospheric turbulence intensity. By extracting light intensity fluctuation information from a Mie-scattering lidar return signal, the atmospheric refractive index structure constant, Cn2, representing the atmospheric turbulence intensity, could be obtained. Specifically, the scintillation effect on the detection path was analyzed, and the probability density distribution of the light intensity of the Mie-scattering lidar return signal was studied. It was verified that the probability density of logarithmic light intensity basically follows a normal distribution under weak fluctuation conditions. The Cn2 profile based on Kolmogorov turbulence theory was retrieved using a layered, iterative method through the scintillation index. The method for detecting Kolmogorov turbulence intensity was applied to the detection of the non-Kolmogorov turbulence intensity. Through detection using the scintillation index, the corresponding C˜n2 profile could be calculated. The detection of the C˜n2 and Cn2 profiles were compared with the Hufnagel-Valley (HV) night model in the Yinchuan area. The results show that the detection results are consistent with the overall change trend of the model. In general, it is feasible to detect a non-Kolmogorov turbulence profile using Mie-scattering lidar.

Study on the Boundary Layer of the Haze at Xianyang Airport Based on Multi-Source Detection Data

To reveal the high-resolution atmospheric and statistical characteristics of haze events within the boundary layer (BL) in different months, this study conducted a combined detection experiment using a wind-profiling radar, a microwave radiometer, and an ambient particulate monitor on 1230 haze events occurring at Xianyang Airport from 2016 to 2021. First, the boundary layer heights (BLHs) of the haze events were calculated using the atmospheric refractive index structure constant, wind direction and speed, and these were verified against reanalysis data from ERA-Interim. Spatial–temporal evolution and statistical characteristics of temperature, and relative humidity and horizontal wind during haze events, were then analyzed. Finally, the relationships between the BLH and AQI (air quality index) and PM2.5 during the haze events were analyzed. The results indicate that the average BLHs during haze events at Xianyang Airport were generally lower than 1000 m. Moreover, the average BLHs in December and January were distributed in the range of 200–600 m, and lower than that in June and July, in a range of 500–1100 m. Furthermore, the maximum value of the average BLH appears at 13:00–15:00. When the temperature was low in the morning, the stratification difference was small and the sensible heat flux between ground and air was still weak, leading to a low BLH value. Meanwhile, when the air quality was poor, the relative humidity was relatively large, and the corresponding AQI and PM2.5 were very large. Subsequently, when the temperature gradually increased with time, the heat flux and the average BLH also gradually increased. Moreover, the relative humidity within the BL decreased, and the corresponding AQI and PM2.5 also gradually decreased, with the corresponding air quality improving accordingly. The results obtained herein provide a key reference for the preparedness of haze events.

Simulation and Analysis of Mie-Scattering Lidar-Measuring Atmospheric Turbulence Profile.

Based on the residual turbulent scintillation theory, the Mie-scattering lidar can measure the intensity of atmospheric turbulence by detecting the light intensity scintillation index of the laser return signal. In order to evaluate and optimize the reliability of the Mie-scattering lidar system for detecting atmospheric turbulence, the appropriate parameters of the Mie-scattering lidar system are selected and optimized using the residual turbulent scintillation theory. Then, the Fourier transform method is employed to perform the numerical simulation of the phase screen of the laser light intensity transformation on the vertical transmission path of atmospheric turbulence. The phase screen simulation, low-frequency optimization, and scintillation index calculation methods are provided in detail, respectively. Based on the phase distribution of the laser beam, the scintillation index is obtained. Through the relationship between the scintillation index and the atmospheric turbulent refractive index structure constant, the atmospheric turbulence profile is inverted. The simulation results show that the atmospheric refractive index structure constant profile obtained by the iterative method is consistent with the input HV5/7 model below 6500 m, which has great guiding significance to carry out actual experiments to measure atmospheric turbulence using the Mie lidar.

Atmospheric Duct Detection Using Wind Profiler Radar and RASS

AbstractA method of detecting atmospheric ducts using a wind profiler radar (WPR) and a radio acoustic sounding system (RASS) is proposed. The method uses the RASS to measure the virtual temperature profile and calculate the Brunt–Väisälä frequency; it also uses the WPR to measure the spectral width of the atmosphere and the atmospheric refractive index structure constant. Then the profile of the atmospheric refractive index gradient and modified refractivity are calculated using virtual temperature, spectral width, and the atmospheric refractive index structure constant. Finally, the height and intensity of the atmospheric duct are calculated to achieve continuous monitoring of the atmospheric duct. To verify the height and intensity of the atmospheric duct, comparison experiments between WPR-RASS and radiosondes were carried out from June 2014 to June 2015 in Dalian, Liaoning Province, China. The results show that the profile of modified refractivity by WPR-RASS has exactly the same trend as the radiosondes, the two methods have a good consistency, and the atmospheric duct value from WPR-RASS is in good agreement with that from radiosondes.

Analysis of atmosphere channel for space-to-ground optical communications

Since atmosphere deeply influences the beams propagated in space-to-ground optical communications, it is important to study its effects on the beam transmission in the atmospheric channel. In this paper, we analyze the impacts of atmospheric channel with the theory of free space optical communication. First, we investigate the atmospheric attenuation of different beams through the mathematical models. Then, we analyze the effects of atmospheric turbulence on the signal transmission by the atmospheric refractive index structure constant. In addition, we simulate the atmospheric transmittance with different zenith angles, beams, heights and rainfall. The results show that the wavelength, atmospheric turbulence, zenith angle, height and rainfall have important impacts on the signal transmission of space-to-ground optical communications. This demonstrates much theoretical significance on the wavelength selection, height settings of the optical ground station as well as angle selection of transmitter.

Semianalytic pulsed coherent laser radar equation for coaxial and apertured systems using nearest Gaussian approximation

We present a semianalytic pulsed coherent laser radar (CLR) equation for coaxial and apertured systems. It combines the conventional CLR equation, numerical Fresnel integration (NFI), and nearest Gaussian approximation, using correction factors that correspond to beam truncation. The range dependence of the signal-to-noise ratio obtained by this semianalytic equation was found to agree well with the precise NFI solution for not only the focal range, but also the near-field range. Furthermore, the optimum beam truncation condition depending on the atmospheric refractive index structure constant is shown. The derived equation is useful for precisely predicting the CLR performance simply by its semianalytic expression.

Use of a moiré deflectometer on a telescope for atmospheric turbulence measurements

An instrument has been built for the study of the atmospheric turbulence by measuring the fluctuation of the angle of arrival across a telescope aperture using moiré deflectometry. A slightly divergent laser beam passes through a turbulent ground level atmosphere and enters the telescope aperture. The laser beam is recollimated behind the telescope's focal point by means of a collimator. The collimated beam passes through a moiré deflectometer. The fluctuating self-image of the first grating is formed on the second grating of the moiré deflectometer and fluctuating moiré fringes are formed. Using moiré fringe fluctuations we have calculated the fluctuations of the angle of arrival, the Fried's parameter r(0), and the atmospheric refractive index structure constant. Because of the magnifications of the telescope and moiré deflectometry, the precision of the technique can potentially be 1 order of magnitude more precise than previous methods.

Application of the moiré deflectometry on divergent laser beam to the measurement of the angle of arrival fluctuations and the refractive index structure constant in the turbulent atmosphere

When a slightly divergent laser beam passes through a turbulent ground level atmosphere and strikes a linear grating, fluctuating self-images are formed at Talbot distances. By superimposing a similar grating on one of the self-images, even for the case of parallel gratings' lines, fluctuating moiré fringes are formed owing to the beam divergence. Recording the successive moiré patterns by a CCD camera and feeding them to a computer, after filtering the higher spatial frequencies, produces highly magnified fluctuations of the laser beam. Using moiré fringe fluctuations we have calculated the fluctuations of the angle of arrival and the atmospheric refractive index structure constant. The implementation of the technique is straightforward, a telescope is not required, fluctuations can be magnified more than ten times, and the precision of the technique is similar to that reported in our previous work.

Application of moiré technique to the measurement of the atmospheric turbulence parameters related to the angle of arrival fluctuations

There are several methods for measuring ground-level atmospheric turbulence parameters, such as the refractive index profile and its fluctuations, correlations of the fluctuations in space and time, and the atmospheric refractive-index structure constant. These methods are based mainly on the measurement of fluctuations in intensity and location of an image formed by light propagating in the turbulent atmosphere or the fluctuations in impinging points of narrow light beams traversing the ground-level atmosphere. Exploiting the moiré technique, we suggest a high-precision approach for determining fluctuaions in the angle of arrival. When a low-frequency grating (carrier grating) is installed at a suitable distance from a telescope, its image, practically, forms on the focal plane of the telescope objective. Superimposing a physical grating (probe grating) of the same pitch as the image grating on the image forms the moiré pattern. The atmospheric turbulence distorts the image grating. Processing the fluctuations of successive moiré fringes can yield the mentioned parameters across a rather large cross section of the atmosphere with high accuracy, because of the moiré technique's magnifying character and access to a large volume of data, and does so in a comparatively simple and reliable manner.
