Improvement of the spaceborne synthetic aperture radar stereo positioning accuracy without ground control points

AbstractCompared with optical remote sensing satellites, the geometric positioning accuracy of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite is not affected by satellite attitude or weather conditions. SAR satellites can achieve relatively high positioning accuracy without ground control points, which is particularly important in global surveying and mapping. However, the stereo positioning accuracy of SAR satellites is mainly affected by the SAR systematic delay and the atmospheric propagation delay of radar signals. An iterative compensation method for the SAR systematic time delay is proposed based on digital elevation model to improve the stereo positioning accuracy of SAR satellites without control points. In addition, to address the non‐real‐time updates of external reference atmospheric param, an iterative compensation method to estimate the atmospheric propagation delay of radar signals is proposed based on standard atmospheric models. In this study, SAR images from the Gaofen‐3 (GF‐3) satellite with 5 m resolutions were used as experimental data to verify the effectiveness of our proposed method. Simultaneously, the 2D positioning accuracy was better than 3 m and increased by 42.9%, and the elevation positioning accuracy was better than 3 m and increased by 90.2%.

Adaptive Fusion of Multi-Source Tropospheric Delay Estimates for InSAR Deformation Measurements

Atmospheric propagation delay correction is the key to improving the accuracy of deformation measurement of satellite interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR). The empirical phase-elevation models and external data-based models present uneven performances of atmospheric delay correction for InSAR deformation monitoring. In this study, based on our previous fusion of delays predicted by multiple weather models (FDWM), we propose a new approach of adaptive fusion of multi-source tropospheric delay (AFMTD) estimates derived from multiple models over wide areas, i.e., ERA5, GACOS, WRF, MERRA2, NARR, MODIS, Linear model, and Powerlaw model. The spatially varying scaling algorithm is employed to refine the tropospheric delays predicted by the weather models. Meanwhile, we adopt a multiple-window strategy to cope with the spatially lateral variation of tropospheric delays. The AFMTD not only improves the spatial heterogeneity of tropospheric delay, but also adaptively combines multiple models to achieve a more reliable delay estimation. This AFMTD method is incorporated into the StaMPS-SBAS procedure. We compared the AFMTD with other single models using ENVISAT ASAR and Sentinel-1 datasets over Los Angeles of Southern California. The result of ASAR first demonstrates the effectiveness and reliability of the AFMTD method by referring to the assumed ground truth of simultaneous MERIS observations. The results of Sentinel-1 data show that over 95% of unwrapped interferograms have the minimum root-mean-square values after AFMTD correction for both descending and ascending tracks. The validation against GPS observation presents that the RMSEs of InSAR displacement time series after AFMTD correction decreases at more than 90% of 125 GPS stations. The average reductions of RMSE are 35.79% and 36.28% for descending and ascending data, respectively, and the maximum improvement is more than 70%. Overall, the proposed AFMTD method outperforms any single model for InSAR tropospheric delay correction and provides an open framework to fuse multi-source tropospheric delay estimates.

Range Geolocation Accuracy of C-/L-Band SAR and its Implications for Operational Stack Coregistration

Time series analysis of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and interferometric SAR generally starts with coregistration for the precise alignment of the stack of images. Here, we introduce a model-adjusted geometrical image coregistration (MAGIC) algorithm for stack coregistration. This algorithm corrects for atmospheric propagation delays and known surface motions using existing models and ensures simplicity and computational efficiency in the data processing systems. We validate this approach by evaluating the impact of different geolocation errors on stacks of the C-band Sentinel-1 and L-band ALOS-2 data, with a focus on the ionosphere. Our results show that the impact of the ionosphere dominates Sentinel-1 ascending (dusk-side) orbit and ALOS-2 data. After correcting for ionosphere using the JPL high-resolution global ionospheric maps, with topside total electron content (TEC) estimated from GPS receivers onboard the Sentinel-1 platforms, solid Earth tides, and troposphere, the mis-registration RMSE reduces by over a factor of four from 0.20 to 0.05 m for Sentinel-1 and from 2.66 to 0.56 m for ALOS-2. The results demonstrate that for Sentinel-1, the MAGIC approach is accurate enough in the range direction for most applications, including interferometry; while for the L-band SAR, it can be potentially accurate enough if topside TEC is available. Based on our current understanding of different error sources, we evaluate the expected range geolocation error budget for the upcoming NISAR mission with an upper bound of the relative geolocation error of 1.3 and 0.2 m for its L- and S-band SAR, respectively.

Autonomous extraction of millimeter-scale deformation in InSAR time series using deep learning

Systematically characterizing slip behaviours on active faults is key to unraveling the physics of tectonic faulting and the interplay between slow and fast earthquakes. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), by enabling measurement of ground deformation at a global scale every few days, may hold the key to those interactions. However, atmospheric propagation delays often exceed ground deformation of interest despite state-of-the art processing, and thus InSAR analysis requires expert interpretation and a priori knowledge of fault systems, precluding global investigations of deformation dynamics. Here, we show that a deep auto-encoder architecture tailored to untangle ground deformation from noise in InSAR time series autonomously extracts deformation signals, without prior knowledge of a fault’s location or slip behaviour. Applied to InSAR data over the North Anatolian Fault, our method reaches 2 mm detection, revealing a slow earthquake twice as extensive as previously recognized. We further explore the generalization of our approach to inflation/deflation-induced deformation, applying the same methodology to the geothermal field of Coso, California.

Integrated Water Vapor during Rain and Rain-Free Conditions above the Swiss Plateau

Water vapor column density, or vertically-integrated water vapor (IWV), is monitored by ground-based microwave radiometers (MWR) and ground-based receivers of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). For rain periods, the retrieval of IWV from GNSS Zenith Wet Delay (ZWD) neglects the atmospheric propagation delay of the GNSS signal by rain droplets. Similarly, it is difficult for ground-based dual-frequency single-polarisation microwave radiometers to separate the microwave emission of water vapor and cloud droplets from the rather strong microwave emission of rain. For ground-based microwave radiometry at Bern (Switzerland), we take the approach that IWV during rain is derived from linearly interpolated opacities before and after the rain period. The intermittent rain periods often appear as spikes in the time series of integrated liquid water (ILW) and are indicated by ILW ≥ 0.4 mm. In the present study, we assume that IWV measurements from radiosondes are not affected by rain. We intercompare the climatologies of IWV(rain), IWV(no rain), and IWV(all) obtained by radiosonde, ground-based GNSS atmosphere sounding, ground-based MWR, and ECMWF reanalysis (ERA5) at Payerne and Bern in Switzerland. In all seasons, IWV(rain) is 3.75 to 5.94 mm greater than IWV(no rain). The mean IWV differences between GNSS and radiosonde at Payerne are less than 0.26 mm. The datasets at Payerne show a better agreement than the datasets at Bern. However, the MWR at Bern agrees with the radiosonde at Payerne within 0.41 mm for IWV(rain) and 0.02 mm for IWV(no rain). Using the GNSS and rain gauge measurements at Payerne, we find that IWV(rain) increases with increase of the precipitation rate during summer as well as during winter. IWV(rain) above the Swiss Plateau is quite well estimated by GNSS and MWR though the standard retrievals are limited or hampered during rain periods.

Stability Analysis of Geometric Positioning Accuracy of YG-13 Satellite

High-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites have become an important way to observe the earth. However, the geometric positioning accuracy of SAR satellite images across different times and spaces is an important factor affecting the realization of global remote sensing applications. In this study, a multimode hybrid geometric calibration method that incorporates an atmospheric propagation delay correction and that can be used to detect systematic errors affecting the geometric positioning accuracy of SAR satellites is described. The spatiotemporal variation reasons of geometric positioning error sources for spaceborne SAR are then analyzed. Finally, the stability of geometric positioning accuracy is evaluated using the described method on data extracted from Yaogan-13 (YG-13) SAR satellite images with long time series and multiple test areas in China. The results reveal that during the study period (2015-2017), the geometric positioning accuracy of the YG-13 SAR system was relatively stable and is better than 3 m regardless of the spatial distribution, after removal of systematic pulse-dependent slant range errors and atmospheric correction. Furthermore, the validation results provide a reference for the design of SAR satellite systems, the establishment of calibration periods, and quantitative remote sensing application.

Raytracing atmospheric delays in ground-based GNSS reflectometry

Several studies have recognized that Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) is subject to atmospheric propagation delays. Unfortunately, there is little information in the peer-reviewed literature about the methods and algorithms involved in correcting for this effect. We have developed an atmospheric ray-tracing procedure to solve rigorously the three-point boundary value problem of ground-based GNSS-R observations. We defined the reflection-minus-direct or interferometric delay in terms of vacuum distance and radio length. We clarified the roles of linear and angular refraction in splitting the total delay in two components, along-path and geometric. We have introduced for the first time two subcomponents of the atmospheric geometric delay, the geometry shift and the geometric excess. We have defined corresponding atmospheric altimetry corrections necessary for unbiased altimetry retrievals. Using simulations, we examined the interferometric atmospheric delay for a range of typical scenarios, where it attained centimeter-level values at low satellite elevation angles ~ 5° for a 10-m high station. We found a linear and exponential dependence on reflector height and satellite elevation angle, respectively. A similar trend was found for the atmospheric altimetry correction, albeit with an amplified meter-level magnitude. The two delay components were similar near the horizon while the angular one vanished at zenith. For the altimetry correction components, both remained non-zero at zenith. We thus quantified the atmospheric bias in GNSS-R sea level retrievals.

Feasibility of Replacing the Range Doppler Equation of Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar Considering Atmospheric Propagation Delay with a Rational Polynomial Coefficient Model.

Usually, the rational polynomial coefficient (RPC) model of spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is fitted by the original range Doppler (RD) model. However, the radar signal is affected by two-way atmospheric delay, which causes measurement error in the slant range term of the RD model. In this paper, two atmospheric delay correction methods are proposed for use in terrain-independent RPC fitting: single-scene SAR imaging with a unique atmospheric delay correction parameter (plan 1) and single-scene SAR imaging with spatially varying atmospheric delay correction parameters (plan 2). The feasibility of the two methods was verified by conducting fitting experiments and geometric positioning accuracy verification of the RPC model. The experiments for the GF-3 satellite were performed by using global meteorological data, a global digital elevation model, and ground control data from several regions in China. The experimental results show that it is feasible to use plan 1 or plan 2 to correct the atmospheric delay error, no matter whether in plain, mountainous, or plateau areas. Moreover, the geometric positioning accuracy of the RPC model after correcting the atmospheric delay was improved to better than 3 m. This is of great significance for the efficient and high-precision geometric processing of spaceborne SAR images.

On the information content in linear horizontal delay gradients estimated from space geodesy observations

Abstract. We have studied linear horizontal gradients in the atmospheric propagation delay above ground-based stations receiving signals from the Global Positioning System (GPS). Gradients were estimated from 11 years of observations from five sites in Sweden. Comparing these gradients with the corresponding ones from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) analyses shows that GPS gradients detect effects over different timescales caused by the hydrostatic and the wet components. The two stations equipped with microwave-absorbing material below the antenna, in general, show higher correlation coefficients with the ECMWF gradients compared to the other three stations. We also estimated gradients using 4 years of GPS data from two co-located antenna installations at the Onsala Space Observatory. Correlation coefficients for the east and the north wet gradients, estimated with a temporal resolution of 15 min from GPS data, can reach up to 0.8 for specific months when compared to simultaneously estimated wet gradients from microwave radiometry. The best agreement is obtained when an elevation cut-off angle of 3∘ is applied in the GPS data processing, in spite of the fact that the radiometer does not observe below 20∘. We also note a strong seasonal dependence in the correlation coefficients, from 0.3 during months with smaller gradients to 0.8 during months with larger gradients, typically during the warmer and more humid part of the year. Finally, a case study using a 15 d long continuous very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) campaign was carried out. The comparison of the gradients estimated from VLBI and GPS data indicates that a homogeneous and frequent sampling of the sky is a critical parameter.

Improvement and Assessment of the Absolute Positioning Accuracy of Chinese High-Resolution SAR Satellites

In recent years, China has launched YaoGan-13 and GaoFen-3, high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites that can acquire global high-resolution images. The absolute positioning accuracy of such satellites is important for mapping areas without ground reference points and for automated processing. However, satellites without geometric calibration have poor absolute positioning accuracy, greatly restricting their application (e.g., land resource surveys). Therefore, they cannot meet national demands for high-resolution SAR images with good geometric accuracy. Here, we propose a series of methods to improve the absolute positioning accuracy of YaoGan-13 and GaoFen-3, such as the multiple-image combined calibration strategy and geometric calibration model for a real continuously moving configuration, including consideration of atmospheric propagation delay. Using high-accuracy ground control data collected from different areas, the 2-D and 3-D absolute positioning accuracies of YaoGan-13 and GaoFen-3 were assessed after implementation of the improvement measures. Experimental results showed that, after calibration, the 2-D absolute positioning accuracy of YaoGan-13 and GaoFen-3 are improved from 43.86 m to 2.57 m and from 30.34 m to 4.29 m, respectively. In addition, the 3-D absolute positioning accuracies of YaoGan-13 in plane and elevation are 3.21 m and 2.22 m, respectively. Improving the absolute positioning accuracy of these satellites could broaden the scope of their potential applications in the future.

Geometric Calibration and Accuracy Verification of the GF-3 Satellite.

The GF-3 satellite is the first multi-polarization synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging satellite in China, which operates in the C band with a resolution of 1 m. Although the SAR satellite system was geometrically calibrated during the in-orbit commissioning phase, there are still some system errors that affect its geometric positioning accuracy. In this study, these errors are classified into three categories: fixed system error, time-varying system error, and random error. Using a multimode hybrid geometric calibration of spaceborne SAR, and considering the atmospheric propagation delay, all system errors can be effectively corrected through high-precision ground control points and global atmospheric reference data. The geometric calibration experiments and accuracy evaluation for the GF-3 satellite are performed using ground control data from several regions. The experimental results show that the residual system errors of the GF-3 SAR satellite have been effectively eliminated, and the geometric positioning accuracy can be better than 3 m.

Detections and simulations of tropospheric water vapor fluctuations due to trapped lee waves by ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 ScanSAR interferometry

Detailed wave-like spatial patterns of atmospheric propagation delay signals associated with mountain lee waves were detected in Hokkaido and Tohoku by synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry (InSAR) with the ScanSAR mode observation data of a Phased Array-type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar 2 on board the Advanced Land Observing Satellite 2. Both cases occurred under stable atmosphere conditions. The InSAR-observed peak-to-trough line of sight changes in the mountain wave signals was 4 and 5 cm with the horizontal wavelengths of 9 and 15 km in Hokkaido and Tohoku, respectively. Locations of positive phase maxima in the mountain wave signals coincides with locations of cloud streets observed by visible satellite imagery, indicating that crests of mountain waves contain relatively much water vapor compared with wave troughs. Numerical weather simulations with the horizontal grid spacing of 1 km were performed to reproduce InSAR phase variations, and as a result those simulations could reasonably reproduce observed wave amplitudes and wavelengths in both cases. On the other hand, numerical simulations tended to overestimate wave attenuation rates: simulated mountain waves decreased as the wave propagated faster than those of observed signals. Because the simulated wave attenuation rate is sensitive to physics in the planetary boundary layer (PBL), we investigated the reproducibility of five PBL schemes implemented in the WRF model. As a result, all the PBL schemes showed little attenuation except for the Yonsei University scheme (YSU), while the wavelength in the YSU was most close to the observation. Our study demonstrated the uniqueness and usefulness of InSAR for meteorological application as the ability to map the detailed water vapor distribution regardless of cloud cover. In addition, the reasonable reproducibility of the water vapor delay signal due to lee waves by the numerical weather model encourages researchers who tackle the correction of the tropospheric propagation delay, increasing the accuracy in detecting surface deformations.Graphical abstract.

Multimode Hybrid Geometric Calibration of Spaceborne SAR Considering Atmospheric Propagation Delay

The atmospheric propagation delay of radar signals is a systematic error that occurs in the atmospheric environment, and is a key issue in the high-precision geometric calibration of spaceborne SAR. A multimode hybrid geometric calibration method for spaceborne SAR that considers the atmospheric propagation delay is proposed in this paper. Error sources that affect the accuracy of the geometric calibration were systematically analyzed. Based on correction of the atmospheric propagation delay, a geometric calibration model for spaceborne SAR was established. The high precision geometric calibration scheme for spaceborne SAR was explored by considering the pulse-width and bandwidth of the signal. A series of experiments were carried out based on high-resolution Yaogan 13 (YG-13) SAR satellite data and ground control data. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method is effective. The plane positioning accuracy of YG-13 in stripmap mode without control points is better than 3 m, and the accuracy of the sliding spotlight mode is better than 1.5 m.

Assimilation of GPS-Derived Atmospheric Propagation Delay in DInSAR Data Processing

Microwave radiation is almost insensitive in terms of power attenuation to the presence of atmosphere; the atmosphere is however an error source in repeat pass interferometry due to propagation delay variations. This effect represents a main limitation in the detection and monitoring of weak deformation patterns in differential interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR), especially in emergency conditions. Due to the wavelength reduction current, X-Band sensors are even more sensitive to such error sources: procedures adopted in classical advanced DInSAR for atmospheric filtering may fail in the presence of higher revisiting rates. In this work, we show such effect on data acquired by the COSMO-SkyMed constellation. The dataset has been acquired with very high revisiting rates during the emergency phase. This feature allows clearly showing the inability of standard filtering adopted in common processing chains in handling seasonal atmospheric delay variations over temporal intervals spanning periods shorter than 1 year. We discuss a procedure for the mitigation of atmospheric propagation delay (APD) that is based on the integration of data of GPS systems which carries out measurements with large observation angles diversity practically in continuous time. The proposed algorithm allows a robust assimilation of the GPS atmospheric delay measurements in the multipass DInSAR processing and found on a linear approximation with the height of the atmospheric delay corresponding to a stratified atmosphere. Achieved results show a significant mitigation of the seasonal atmospheric variations.

Azimuth resolution improvement for spaceborne SAR images with quasi-non-overlapped Doppler bandwidth

The azimuth resolution improvement problem is solved via a coherent combination of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images with the quasi-non-overlapped Doppler bandwidth. Prior to the spectra combination, SAR images should be co-registered, while phase biases induced by topography, atmospheric propagation delays and baseline measurement errors should be calibrated. However, the coregistration accuracy suffers from large Doppler decorrelation caused by the quasi-non-overlapped Doppler bandwidth. Furthermore, the method used to estimate phase biases from interferogram of azimuth pre-filtered SAR image pairs will fail when there is no overlapped spectrum. The fringe simulation and maximum sharpness optimization are adopted to deal with the problems. Accordingly, a novel algorithm to coherently synthesize SAR images is presented. The experiment with the Terra SAR X-band (TerraSAR-X) satellite data validates the performance of the presented method.

The Study on MODIS PWV Correction Based on GPS in Beijing Region<sup></sup>

Atmospheric propagation delays limit the measurement accuracy of post-and inter-seismic deformations, subsidence induced by mining or fluid extraction, or ground motion. It is particularly important to devise techniques to improve our understanding of electromagnetic delays in the atmosphere and to mitigate their effects on SAR measurements. The article compared GPS PWV and MODIS PWV in Beijing and concluded the correct model of MODIS PWV. The MODIS PWV for correct model is better than MODIS PWV. The mean value of the minus results of MODIS modified PWV subs tract from GPS PWV in summer is-0.8mm, while the mean value of the minus results of MODIS PWV subs tract from GPS PWV in summer is 5.9mm. The mean value of the minus results of MODIS modified PWV subs tract from GPS PWV in winter is-0.1mm, while the mean value of the minus results of MODIS PWV subs tract from GPS PWV in winter is-0.6mm.

The ACES mission: System development and test status

Atomic Clock Ensemble in Space (ACES) is an ESA mission in fundamental physics based on a new generation of clocks operated in the microgravity environment of the International Space Station. Installed at the external payload facility of the Columbus module, ACES will accommodate two atomic clocks: PHARAO, a primary frequency standard based on samples of laser cooled Cs atoms, and the active H-maser SHM. The two on-board clocks will generate a time scale with fractional frequency instability and inaccuracy of a few parts in 10 16. The ACES frequency reference will be distributed to ground by a MicroWave Link (MWL) and used to compare distant clocks. These comparisons will allow precision tests of the Einstein's theory of general relativity, including a measurement of the gravitational red-shift, a search for time variations of fundamental constants, and tests of the standard model extension. ACES will also support applications in different areas of research, including geodesy and GNSS remote sensing. A link in the optical domain is also part of ACES for time transfer experiments, ranging, and analysis of atmospheric propagation delays. The engineering models of the ACES clocks and main subsystems have been successfully tested, and manufacturing of the flight models has been started. Mission concept, scientific objectives, and status of ACES will be presented together with the latest test results.

Development of a regional tropospheric delay model for GPS‐based navigation with emphasis to the Indian Region

The accuracy of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), aimed to support precise positioning for aircraft navigation globally by coordinating different regional augmentation systems, is limited by the extent to which the atmospheric propagation delay of microwave signals can be modeled. An algorithm is developed for modeling the tropospheric delay based on mean meteorological parameters. A Region‐specific Tropospheric Delay (RTD) model is developed exclusively for the Indian region using meteorological data from the Indian subcontinent, as a part of GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) program. The applicability of this model is examined in the context of the global model used in Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS), developed employing meteorological data mostly from North American continent, by comparing the estimated zenith tropospheric delay (ZTD) with those obtained from regional models employing measured atmospheric parameters at the surface. The rms deviation of ZTD estimated using RTD model from that of the surface model is found to be ∼5 cm. A further validation by comparing with GPS measurements from two IGS stations at Bangalore and Hyderabad showed that predictions made using the RTD model are within an rms deviation of ±5 cm while those using WAAS model is ±7 cm. Maximum value of the residual error for RTD model is ∼15 cm, which corresponds to a ∼0.5 m error in the vertical coordinates for the lowest satellite elevation angles usually encountered.

Kinematic GPS solutions for aircraft trajectories: Identifying and minimizing systematic height errors associated with atmospheric propagation delays

When kinematic GPS processing software is used to estimate the trajectory of an aircraft, unless the delays imposed on the GPS signals by the atmosphere are either estimated or calibrated via external observations, then vertical height errors of decimeters can occur. This problem is clearly manifested when the aircraft is positioned against multiple base stations in areas of pronounced topography because the aircraft height solutions obtained using different base stations will tend to be mutually offset, or biased, in proportion to the elevation differences between the base stations. When performing kinematic surveys in areas with significant topography it should be standard procedure to use multiple base stations, and to separate them vertically to the maximum extent possible, since it will then be much easier to detect mis‐modeling of the atmosphere.
