Direct Three-Dimensional Mass Spectrometry Imaging with Laser Ablation Remote Atmospheric Pressure Photoionization/Chemical Ionization.

The laser ablation remote atmospheric pressure photoionization/chemical ionization (LARAPPI/CI) platform coupled to an ultrahigh resolution quadrupole-time-of-flight (QToF) mass spectrometer was developed and employed for the first direct three-dimensional (3D) mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) of metabolites in human and plant tissues. Our solution for 3D MSI does not require sample modification or cutting into thin slices. Ablation characteristics of an optical system based on a diffraction optical element are studied and used for voxel stacking to directly remove layers of tissues. Agar gel, red radish, kiwi, human kidney cancer, and normal tissue samples were used for the tests of this new system. The 2D and 3D ion images vividly illustrate differences in the abundances of selected metabolites between cancerous and noncancerous regions of the kidney tissue and also between different parts of plant tissues. The LARAPPI/CI MSI setup is also the first example of the successful use of combined dopant-assisted atmospheric pressure photoionization (DA-APPI) and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) ion source for mass spectrometry imaging.

Rapid differentiation of cystic fibrosis-related bacteria via reagentless atmospheric pressure photoionisation mass spectrometry

Breath analysis is an area of significant interest in medical research as it allows for non-invasive sampling with exceptional potential for disease monitoring and diagnosis. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in breath can offer critical insight into a person’s lifestyle and/or disease/health state. To this end, the development of a rapid, sensitive, cost-effective and potentially portable method for the detection of key compounds in breath would mark a significant advancement. Herein, we have designed, built and tested a novel reagent-less atmospheric pressure photoionisation (APPI) source, coupled with mass spectrometry (MS), utilising a bespoke bias electrode within a custom 3D printed sampling chamber for direct analysis of VOCs. Optimal APPI-MS conditions were identified, including bias voltage, cone voltage and vaporisation temperature. Calibration curves were produced for ethanol, acetone, 2-butanone, ethyl acetate and eucalyptol, yielding R2 > 0.99 and limits of detection < 10 pg. As a pre-clinical proof of concept, this method was applied to bacterial headspace samples of Escherichia coli (EC), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PSA) and Staphylococcus aureus (SA) collected in 1 L Tedlar bags. In particular, PSA and SA are commonly associated with lung infection in cystic fibrosis patients. The headspace samples were classified using principal component analysis with 86.9% of the total variance across the first three components and yielding 100% classification in a blind-sample study. All experiments conducted with the novel APPI arrangement were carried out directly in real-time with low-resolution MS, which opens up exciting possibilities in the future for on-site (e.g., in the clinic) analysis with a portable system.

Vacuum Ultraviolet Fingerprints as a New Way of Disentangling Tropylium/Benzylium Isomers.

The two inseparable companions, tropylium (Tr+) and benzylium (Bz+), were interrogated by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation from 4.5 to 7.0 eV in an ion trap. These new fingerprints provide a new means of distinguishing these two intertwined C7H7+ isomers. In particular, the singular spectral signature of Tr+ in the VUV consists of a single strong electronic transition at ≈6 eV. To illustrate this diagnostic tool, we shed light on the structure of the C7H7+ intermediate that is ubiquitous when using commercial atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) sources. We have identified its structure as the 7-membered ring Tr+, which contradicts some previous beliefs.

Molecular Characterization of Aged Bitumen with Selective and Nonselective Ionization Methods by Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry. 3. Investigation on Molecular Fractions Obtained by Gel Permeation Chromatography

Long-term aging of bitumen causes formation of oxidation products that can be associated with polar and strongly interacting functional groups leading to a tremendous influence on bitumen properties. This can lead to an aggregation of the most polar molecules in the asphaltene fraction. Other types of aggregation have also been described in the literature, with larger and more aliphatic compounds through wax interactions. These aggregate phases can be studied using gel permeation chromatography (GPC) for the separation of heavy petroleum products based on their molecular weight. Three molecular weight fractions of native bitumen and its aged state by a long-term pressure aging vessel (PAV-72h) were obtained with low molecular weight (LMW), medium molecular weight (MMW), and high molecular weight (HMW) fractions. To characterize oxidative aging on each fraction at the molecular level, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) was used. Indeed, the ultrahigh resolution and mass accuracy of this analyzer allow to attribute molecular formulas to each signal of complex matrices unambiguously. An electrospray ionization (ESI) source was used to selectively ionize acid molecules, while atmospheric pressure photoionization source (APPI) was used to have a nonselective ionization of low polarity molecules from bitumen. With both ionization sources, the LMW fraction exhibited the most aromatic and heteroelement-enriched molecules. In terms of variation with aging, the LMW fraction showed the most pronounced variations. Molecular maps evidenced the occurrence of low DBE oxidation markers for Oz and OzSy families. Low variations were observed on distributions of MMW and HMW fractions. Concerning HMW, these unexpected results, obtained by ESI and APPI ionization sources, may be due to a protection of the molecules against oxidation within aggregates. In addition, APPI results underlined that the higher molecular weight distribution containing most of the aggregate molecules was mainly composed of large aliphatic molecules. Overall, this study demonstrated that oxidation products corresponded to small and aliphatic molecules majorly found in the LMW fraction and that aggregated molecules form HMW fraction were relatively protected from oxidation.

Micro(nano)plastics in the atmosphere of the Atlantic Ocean

The occurrence, long-range atmospheric transport and deposition of micro and nano plastics (MNPLs) remains un-quantified for the oceanic atmosphereopen ocean. Here we show the characterisation of MNPLs and the aerosol composition (PM10) in a north-south Atlantic transect from Vigo (Spain) to Punta Arenas (Chile). The analytical procedure to assess the composition of MNPLs consisted of a double suspect screening approach of the polymers and additives, the two constituents of plastics. Polymers were analysed by size exclusion chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry using an atmospheric pressure photoionization source operated in positive and negative conditions (HPLC(SEC)-APPI(+/-)-HRMS). Plastic additives were screened with high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry using an electrospray ionisation source (HPLC-ESI(+/-)-HRMS). The most common polymers were polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyisoprene (PI), and polystyrene (PS), with the highest polymer concentration being 51.7 ng·m−3 of PI. The air mass back trajectories showed the variable influence of oceanic and terrestrial air masses. These differences were reflected in the aerosol composition with different contributions of Saharan dust, sea spray aerosol, organic/elemental carbon, and MNPLs. Results showed that samples largely influenced by sea-spray and air masses originating from coastal South America and the north Atlantic subtropical gyre were more contaminated by MNPLs. Moreover, this information was complemented by the characterisation of the largest particles using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and µ-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (µ-FTIR). This work provides the first field evidence of the long-range transport of MNPLs in most of the Atlantic Ocean, as the result of dynamic coupling between the lower atmosphere and the surface ocean. Sea-spray formation arises as a key driver for the aerosolisation of MNPLs, and atmospheric transport followed by dry deposition may modulate the occurrence of MNPLs in large oceanic regions, issues that will require future research efforts.

Nanoliter atmospheric pressure photoionization-mass spectrometry for direct bioanalysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of low-polarity environmental contaminants that have severe carcinogenic effects and have drawn worldwide attention. However, there remain challenges for current mass spectrometric ionization techniques in the analysis of low-polarity compounds in small-volume biosamples, such as single cells. In this work, we developed a nanoliter atmospheric pressure photoionization (nano-APPI) source and optimized its parameters for the detection of PAHs in small-volume samples. We evaluated the ionization performance of the source in direct and auxiliary gas-assisted photoionization modes and analyzed different PAH compounds as well as spiked biosamples. By combining the advantages of nano-electrospray ionization (nano-ESI) and atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI), our newly developed nano-APPI source achieved high sensitivity for the analysis of PAHs down to the fmol level. Compared to conventional atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI), the detection limit of PAHs was increased by 1-2 orders of magnitude. By optimizing various parameters, we achieved highly efficient ionization of PAHs, effective analysis of PAHs in mixed components, and sensitive detection of low-abundance PAHs in single-cell samples. Our optimized nano-APPI source was successfully applied for the sensitive analysis of PAHs in complex biological samples. Based on our study, we believe that nano-APPI holds great promise for toxicological studies on complex biological samples. The present work has implications for improving the detection sensitivity of low-polarity environmental contaminants and advancing the field of MS-based analysis of small-volume biosamples.

Diversity of organic components in airborne waste discharged from sewer pipe repairs.

Air-discharged waste from commonly used trenchless technologies of sewer pipe repairs is an emerging and poorly characterized source of urban pollution. This study reports on the molecular-level characterization of the atmospherically discharged aqueous-phase waste condensate samples collected at four field sites of the sewer pipe repairs. The molecular composition of organic species in these samples was investigated using reversed-phase liquid chromatography coupled with a photodiode array detector and a high-resolution mass spectrometer equipped with interchangeable atmospheric pressure photoionization and electrospray ionization sources. The waste condensate components comprise a complex mixture of organic species that can partition between gas-, aqueous-, and solid-phases when water evaporates from the air-discharged waste. Identified organic species have broad variability in molecular weight, molecular structures, and carbon oxidation state, which also varied between the waste samples. All condensates contained complex mixtures of oxidized organics, N- and S-containing organics, condensed aromatics, and their functionalized derivatives that are directly released to the atmospheric environment during installations. Furthermore, semi-volatile, low volatility, and extremely low volatility organic compounds comprise 75-85% of the total compounds identified in the waste condensates. Estimates of the component-specific viscosities suggest that upon evaporation of water waste material would form the semi-solid and solid phases. The low volatilities and high viscosities of chemical components in these waste condensates will contribute to the formation of atmospheric secondary organic aerosols and atmospheric solid nanoplastic particles. Lastly, selected components expected in the condensates were quantified and found to be present at high concentrations (1-20 mg L-1) that may exceed regulatory limits.

Assessment of Micro- and Nanoplastic Composition (Polymers and Additives) in the Gastrointestinal Tracts of Ebro River Fishes

One of the main routes of fish exposure to micro- and nanoplastics (MNPLs) is their ingestion. MNPLs can act as reservoirs of organic contaminants that are adsorbed onto their surfaces, or that can leach from their complex formulations, with potential impacts on biota and along the aquatic food chain. While MNPLs have been reported in fishes worldwide, complete information on MNPL compositions, polymers and additives continues to be scarce. In this work, the presence of MNPLs in the gastrointestinal tracts (GIT) of fish from the Ebro River (Spain) was investigated using a double suspected screening approach to assess and quantify polymers and additives. The sample-preparation procedure consisted of sequential alkaline and acidic digestions with KOH and HNO3, followed by ultrasonic-assisted extraction (USAE) with toluene. The analysis of polymers was carried out with size-exclusion chromatography followed by high-resolution mass spectrometry using an atmospheric pressure photoionization source, operating in negative and positive ionisation modes (SEC-(±)-APPI-HRMS) using full-scan acquisition (FS). Plastic additives were assessed using high-performance liquid chromatography with a C18 analytical column coupled to HRMS equipped with an electrospray ionisation source operating under positive and negative conditions (LC-(±ESI)-HRMS). The acquisition was performed in parallel with full-scan (FS) and data-dependent scan (ddMS2) modes, working under positive and negative ionisation modes. The polymers most frequently detected and quantified in fish GITs were polysiloxanes, polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS). PE was detected in 84% of the samples, with a concentration range from 0.55 to 3545 µg/g. On the other hand, plasticisers such as phthalates and stabilisers such as benzotriazoles were the most frequently identified plastic additives.

Contribution of atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry for the characterization of bio-oils from lignocellulosic biomass: Comparison with electrospray ionization and atmospheric pressure photoionization

Bio-oils obtained from lignocellulosic biomass pyrolysis present a very promising alternative to replace petroleum-based fuels. At the molecular level, these materials are highly complex organic mixtures comprising thousands of species covering a large range of mass and polarity. Compared to petroleum, they present a high amount of oxygen containing compounds, limiting their direct use in the classical refining system. To understand and improve both the conversion and upgrading processes, an advanced molecular description of the raw and upgraded bio-oils is required. The most powerful technique for the molecular characterization of such sample is Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS), thanks to its very high mass accuracy and resolving power. It allows assigning unambiguously a unique molecular formula to each m/z signal. Besides, the use of different ionization sources ensures an extensive molecular description and enables to assess the efficiency of different catalytic chemical treatments. In this study, we report the characterization of a pine pyrolysis bio-oil by the three main atmospheric pressure ionization sources: electrospray (ESI), atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) in positive mode coupled to FTICR analyzer. In addition, different solvents and dopants were used to ensure a comprehensive description of the molecular content. Regardless of the atmospheric pressure ionization sources used, C0–100H0–300O0–15 molecular formulas are mainly obtained with lignocellulosic biomass-based bio-oils. Nevertheless, depending on the ionization source, the ions relative intensity are significantly different in respect with their double bound equivalent (DBE), oxygen to carbon ratio (O/C) and hydrogen to carbon ratio (H/C). For example, the APPI source has shown the efficient ionization of aromatic (high DBE and low H/C) less polar (low O/C) molecules compared to the ESI source which efficiency ionized more polar species with high oxygen atom content (high O/C). APCI source has proven to be particularly useful for bio-oil characterization as it demonstrates the presence of an aliphatic distribution in addition to the other bio-oil components also ionized by APPI and ESI.

Comparison of Supercritical Fluid Chromatography Hyphenated to an Ultraviolet Detector and Gas Chromatography Hyphenated to a Flame Ionization Detector for Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis of Citrus Essential Oils

A comparison between the classical gas chromatography (GC) technique with supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) technology was performed using an essential oil of Citrus limon (lemon) as a model, considering its wide use in the cosmetic world. For the qualitative part, the signal annotation was achieved by mass spectrometry using either an electron ionization (EI) or an atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) source. For the quantitative part, GC was hyphenated to a flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and SFC to an ultraviolet detector (SFC-UV). The assay of the major component of citrus oil, i.e., limonene, was carried out by SFC-UV. The similar results obtained between GC-FID and SFC-UV allows SFC-UV to be considered as an alternative to GC-FID for Citrus oil characterization. Then, analyses of an essential oil collection from Citrus fruits were achieved to confirm the potential use of SFC-UV for oil classification in the context of quality control of raw materials in cosmetics.

Polymers of micro(nano) plastic in household tap water of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area

Microplastics (MPLs) are emerging persistent pollutants affecting drinking water systems, and different studies have reported their presence in tap water. However, most of the work has a focus on particles in the 100–5 µm range.Here, a workflow to identify and quantify polymers of micro and nanoplastics (MNPLs), with sizes from 0.7 to 20 µm in tap water, is presented. The analytical method consisted of water fractionated filtration followed by toluene ultrasonic-assisted extraction and size-exclusion chromatography, using an advanced polymer chromatography column coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry with atmospheric pressure photoionization source with negative and positive ionization conditions (HPLC(APC)-APPI(±)-HRMS) and normal phase chromatography HILIC LUNA® column and electrospray ionisation source in positive and negative mode (HPLC(HILIC)-ESI(±)-HRMS). The acquisition was performed in full scan mode, and the subsequent tentative identification of MNPLs polymers has been based on increasing the confirmation level, including the characterisation of monomers by using Kendrick Mass Defect (KMD) analysis, and confirmation and quantification using standards. This approach was applied to assess MNPLs in tap water samples of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (BMA), that were collected from August to October 2020 from home taps of volunteers distributed in the 42 postal codes of the BMA.Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyisoprene (PI), polybutadiene (PBD), polystyrene (PS), polyamide (PA), and polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) were identified. PE, PP, and PA were the most highly detected polymers, and PI and PBD were found at the highest concentrations (9,143 and 1,897 ng/L, respectively).A principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted to assess differences in MNPLs occurrence in drinking water, that was provided from the two drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) suppliers. Results showed that no significant differences (at 95% confidence level) were established between the drinking water supplies to the different areas of the BMA.

Quantitative analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons using high‐performance liquid chromatography‐photodiode array‐high‐resolution mass spectrometric detection platform coupled to electrospray and atmospheric pressure photoionization sources By Anusha Priyadarshani Silva Hettiyadura and Alexander Laskin

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic environmental pollutants of primary concern because of their strong toxicological effects. They decrease immune function and can be linked to many health disorders. PAHs are mainly emitted during incomplete combustion of fossil fuel and biomass. Once they are emitted to the atmosphere, they are transported long distances by air plumes and then removed by wet and dry deposition. While airborne, they undergo atmospheric photo degradation and various oxidation reactions. The major pathway of human exposure to PAHs is through inhalation of polluted air and the health effects of the individual PAHs depend on the length and route of the exposure, relative toxicity, and the concentration levels of exposure. In this tutorial special feature, Alexander Laskin and co-workers present a methodical framework for quantitative analysis of multicomponent PAH mixtures using HPLC-PDA-HRMS, including molecular identification, quantitation and light absorbing properties of individual components. Alexander Laskin is Professor of Chemistry at Purdue University. His research interests are centered on the analytical and physical chemistry of atmospheric aerosols.

Quantitative analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons using high-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array-high-resolution mass spectrometric detection platform coupled to electrospray and atmospheric pressure photoionization sources.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are common pollutants present in atmospheric aerosols and other environmental mixtures. They are of particular air quality and human health concerns as many of them are carcinogenic toxins. They also affect absorption of solar radiation by aerosols, therefore contributing to the radiative forcing of climate. For environmental chemistry studies, it is advantageous to quantify PAH components using the same analytical technics that are commonly applied to characterize a broad range of polar analytes present in the same environmental mixtures. Liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode array and high-resolution mass spectrometric detection (LC-PDA-HRMS) is a method of choice for comprehensive characterization of chemical composition and quantification of light absorption properties of individual organic compounds present in the environmental samples. However, quantification of non-polar PAHs by this method is poorly established because of their imperfect ionization in electrospray ionization (ESI) technique. This tutorial article provides a comprehensive evaluation of the quantitative analysis of 16 priority pollutant PAHs in a standard reference material using the LC-MS platform coupled with the ESI source. Results are further corroborated by the quantitation experiments using an atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) method, which is more sensitive for the PAH detection. The basic concepts and step-by-step practical guidance for the PAHs quantitative characterization are offered based on the systematic experiments, which include (1) Evaluation effects of different acidification levels by formic acid on the (+)ESI-MS detection of PAHs. (2) Comparison of detection limits in ESI+ versus APPI+ experiments. (3) Investigation of the PAH fragmentation patterns in MS2 experiments at different collision energies. (4) Calculation of wavelength dependent mass absorption coefficient (MACλ ) of the standard mixture and its individual PAHs using LC-PDA data. (5) Assessment of the minimal injected mass required for accurate quantification of MACλ of the standard mixture and of a multi-component environmental sample.

Molecular characterization of organic aerosol in winter from Beijing using UHPLC-Orbitrap MS

The urban organic aerosol (OA) may pose a serious threat to human health and ecological environment. In order to understand the molecular characteristics of organic compounds in aerosols, atmospheric PM2.5 samples were collected in Beijing and the extracts were analyzed by liquid chromatography-Orbitrap mass spectrometry combined with negative-ion electrospray ionization, positive-ion electrospray ionization, and positive-ion atmospheric pressure photoionization sources. The combination of multiple ionization sources realized the comprehensive molecular characterization of organic compounds in OA, and 1976 (+APPI), 3038 (−ESI), and 4376 (+ESI) molecular formulas were identified in this study. Significant differences in the species, abundance, and number of subgroups (CHO, CHN, CHON, CHONS, CHOS, and CH compounds) were clarified. Chemical fingerprinting of organics in the PM2.5 extract were investigated by high-throughput non-target compound analytical methods. Structure induction of organic compounds was realized through fragmentation prediction of MS/MS spectra with Sirius software. Furthermore, a total of 50 nitroaromatic formulas, 285 organosulfates (OS) formulas, 57 nitrooxy-OS formulas, 228 CHO- formulas with carboxyl groups, and 36 monoketone formulas were determined based on diagnostic fragmentation filtering. Our results provide important insights into the molecular composition and structural characteristics of OA, and establish foundation for exploring the interaction between composition and physicochemical properties.

Molecular Characterization of Aged Bitumen with Selective and Nonselective Ionization Methods by Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry. 1. Multiple Pressure Aging Vessel Aging Series

Bitumen is a very complex mixture corresponding to the residue from the vacuum distillation of crude oil. The complexity of such a mixture can be defined by its composition, with several thousand molecules that may contain heteroelements such as sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen. Almost all bitumen production is used as a binder to produce asphalt pavements. Additional additives or physicochemical treatments can be used to improve the properties and lifetime of this binder. Asphalt pavements are subject to oxidative aging over the years, which leads to deterioration of the physical properties and reduces the performance and durability of the product. To have a better understanding of such mechanisms, artificial techniques can be used to simulate oxidative aging of bitumen. The most-used technique is the pressure aging vessel (PAV) which simulates the long-term aging of bitumens. To characterize oxidative aging at the molecular level, instruments such as Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) are required. The ultrahigh resolution of this analyzer allows the unambiguous attribution of molecular formulas to each signal. Electrospray ionization (ESI) source was used to selectively ionize acid molecules, while atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) source was used to have a nonselective ionization of low-polarity molecules from bitumen. Analyses were carried out on four different PAV aging times (PAV-0h, 25h, 72h, and 96h) to characterize the aging kinetics from a bitumen sample. ESI results allowed the revealing of significant differences from the heteroatom class and family distributions starting from PAV-72h. It was defined by a general decrease of nonoxygenated families (Nx and NxSy) and by an increase of oxygenated families (Oz, NxOz, OzSy, and NxOzSy). The van Krevelen plot evidenced that aging markers correspond to low double bond equivalent (DBE) molecules. The occurrence of aldehydes and fatty acids (DBE 1) with aging in the CHOz family was characterized with DBE versus carbon number plots. Aging markers from OzSy were also characterized with occurrence of benzothiophenic (O2S1) and sulfonic acids (O3S1). Logically, less meaningful results were obtained with APPI. However, this nonselective source allowed the ionization of thiophenes, furans, cycloalkanes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that were not observed in ESI measurements. Homogenic decreases in the distribution of nonoxygenated compound classes (HC, S1, S2, and N1) were observed. Concerning the oxygenated molecules, an expansion of the distribution was observed, but without the occurrence of specific aging markers. Oxidation seemed to be favored on linear and naphthenic molecules and not on the highly aromatic ones.

FT-ICR mass spectrometry for molecular characterization of water-insoluble organic compounds in winter atmospheric fine particulate matters

Water-insoluble organic compounds (WIOCs) are an important fraction of atmospheric fine particulate matters (PM2.5), which could affect the climate system and threaten human health potentially. In this study, molecular characterization of WIOCs in PM2.5 were investigated by 15 T Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) with atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) source in positive ion mode. A total of 2573 and 1875 molecular formulas were identified in WIOCs extracted by dichloromethane, which were collected in hazy and normal days, respectively. The identified molecular formulas were further classified into four major subgroups, including CH, CHN, CHO and CHNO compounds. CHO compounds predominated in WIOCs, accounting for more than 60% in both samples. CHNO compounds (26.6%) and CH compounds (16.1%) were the second highest subgroups in WIOCs from the hazy days and normal days, respectively. The relative abundance and number of nitro-substituted aromatic compounds were significantly higher in hazy days than in normal days. The molecular composition of WIOCs was more complex in hazy days while more aromatic compounds were identified in normal days.

Analysis of Dechlorane Plus and related compounds in gull eggs by GC-HRMS using a novel atmospheric pressure photoionization source

Here, a new gas chromatography-atmospheric pressure photoionization-high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC-APPI-HRMS) method combined with selective pressurized liquid extraction (sPLE) has been developed for the selective determination of Dechlorane Plus (DP) and its related compounds in gull egg samples used as a bioindicator of contamination. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time these compounds have been analyzed by GC-MS using atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI). Negative ion dopant-assisted APPI using vapors of diethyl ether and a source temperature of 250°C provided high ionization efficiencies and mass spectra characterized by intense in-source fragment ions as well as the presence of molecular ion and characteristic cluster ions containing oxygen atoms in their chemical structure. This made it possible to improve the selectivity in the determination of these compounds compared to that obtained with traditional GC-MS ion sources. Under optimized conditions, the sPLE GC-APPI-HRMS (Orbitrap) method provided high recoveries (> 91%), good precisions (RSD% < 12%), and low method limits of detection (0.1-3.5pgg-1 wet weight). The developed methodology has been applied to the determination of DP and related compounds in eggs of two gull species (L. michahellis and L. audouinii) from several Spanish protected areas. The results obtained showed significant differences in the DP concentration profiles in eggs from different gull breeding locations and between gull species of the same protected area. These results demonstrated the good performance of the GC-APPI-HRMS system to achieve a selective and sensitive determination of DP and related compounds in complex environmental samples.

Rapid screening and quantitation of PAHs in water and complex sample matrices by solid-phase microextraction coupled to capillary atmospheric pressure photoionization-mass spectrometry.

A capillary atmospheric pressure photoionization (cAPPI) source was used to analyze polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in complex matrices like grilled meat extract and urban dust reference material, as well as screening for PAHs in aqueous samples such as tap and lake water. A high-throughput workflow was developed that allowed rapid screening of unknown samples by direct solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with cAPPI-MS, with confirmatory gas chromatography performed only for samples containing trace amounts of PAHs. Extraction times were as low as 15 s, with a total analysis time of 2 min per sample for screening. Limits of detections were in the low pg/ml range and in the subpg/ml range for the direct and chromatographic approach, respectively, with a linear dynamic range between two and three orders of magnitude, as determined for 15 model PAHs. This rapid approach represents an attractive way to screen samples containing nonpolar compounds using an ambient ionization source.

Screening of suspected micro(nano)plastics in the Ebro Delta (Mediterranean Sea)

This is the first work reporting the use of a double suspect-screening to assess most common polymers and additives in micro(nano)plastics (NPLs/MPLs) found in environmental waters. The method consisted of water filtration followed by ultrasonic-assisted extraction with toluene and analysis employing size exclusion chromatography using an advanced polymer chromatography column coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry with an atmospheric pressure photoionisation source by negative ionisation conditions (LC(APC)-APPI(−)-HRMS). The identification of NPL/MPLs polymers has been based on increasing confirmation level, including the monomers characterisation by the Kendrick Mass Defect and confirmation and quantification when standards were available. In parallel, the identification of main additives in NPL/MPLs composition, as well organic contaminants adsorbed onto the plastic particles were carried out by analysis of the extracts by LC(C18)-APPI (+/−)-HRMS. To assess the impact of plastic pollution it is necessary to assess the composition in terms of polymers but also the additives. This screening approach has been employed to study composition of NPL/MPLs in the Ebro Delta. Two sampling campaigns including freshwater and seawater samples have been investigated to assess plastic composition in the top 5 cm. Polystyrene (PS), polyethylene (PE), polyisoprene (PI), polybutadiene (PBD), polypropylene (PP) and polysiloxanes were the most detected polymers and PP and PE, sizing between < 1000 and 2000 Da, were found at concentrations reaching up to 7000 ng/L in some areas.The pentadecanoic acid, 1,2,3-benzotriazoles, 2-ethylhexanoic acid (2-EHA), and phthalates such as dimethyl phthalate, mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP) and the phthalimide were more frequently detected plastic additives. Finally, series of organic contaminants were as well detected in the particulate fraction. These organic contaminants cannot be associated to plastic compositions but can be associated to their adsorption to the particulate matter, in particular to NPL/MPLs, due to their non-polar character. Among these organic contaminants, the more frequently detected were pharmaceutical compounds, food additives and pesticides.

Modification of an atmospheric pressure photoionization source for online analysis of exhaled breath coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry.

Breath analysis is a promising method for metabolomics studies and clinical diagnosis, as it enables the observation of metabolites in a convenient and noninvasive way. In this work, an atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) source was modified for online analysis of exhaled breath by coupling with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (QTOFMS). Three parameters, namely, the capillary voltage, the sampling flow and the curtain gas flow of the APPI source, were optimized. Five healthy volunteers, three males and two females, were enrolled to test the performance of modified APPI-QTOFMS by analyzing their exhaled breath. A total of 21 compounds were tentatively identified, and four metabolites, namely, dimethyl selenoxide, δ-valerolactam, hydroxymandelic acid and palmitic amide were detected in the exhaled breath for the first time. The result shows that modified APPI-QTOFMS can be used for the online study of exhaled breath. Graphical abstract.
