Liquid phase transformation mechanism of β-caryophyllonic acid initiated by hydroxyl radicals and ozone in atmosphere

β-caryophyllonic acid (BCA), as an important precursor of aqueous secondary organic aerosols (aqSOA), has adverse effects on the atmospheric environment and human health. However, the key atmospheric chemical reaction process in which BCA participates in the formation of aqueous secondary organic aerosols is still unclear. In this study, the reaction mechanism and kinetics of BCA with ·OH and O3 were investigated by quantum chemical calculations. The initiation reactions between BCA and ·OH include addition and H-abstraction reaction pathways, subsequent intermediates will also react with O2, ultimately undergo a cracking reaction to generate small molecular substances. The reaction of BCA with O3 can generate primary ozone oxides and the Criegee Intermediates oIM3, subsequent main reaction products include keto-BCA, as well as other small molecule aqSOA precursors. The entire reaction process increases the O/C ratio of aqSOA in the aqueous phase and generates products of small molecules such as 4-formylpropionic acid, which plays an important role in the formation of aqSOA. At 298K, the transformation rate constants of BCA initiated by ·OH and O3 are 1.47 × 1010 M−1 s−1 and 3.16 × 105 M−1 s−1, respectively, the atmospheric lifetimes of BCA reacting with ·OH range from 0.86 h–5.40 h, while the lifetimes of BCA reacting with O3 range from 0.44 h–10.04 years. This suggests that BCA primarily reacts with ·OH. However, under higher O3 concentrations, its ozonolysis becomes significant, promoting the formation of aqSOA. According to the risk assessment, the toxicity of most transformation products (TPs) gradually decreased, but the residual developmental toxicity could not be ignored. In this paper, the atmospheric liquid phase oxidation mechanisms of sesquiterpene unsaturated derived acid were studied from the microscopic level, which has guiding significance for the formation and transformation of aqSOA in atmosphere.

Oxidative weathering on the continent and seawater upwelling along the passive continental margin promoted widespread phosphorite formation at the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian boundary in South China

The latest Proterozoic to early Cambrian is characterized by major global phosphogenic events and the diversification of complex multicellular life. However, the feedback mechanism of atmospheric oxidation and upwelling processes to form voluminous phosphorite deposits is unclear. South China is a key example of the sedimentary spectrum related to the Neoproterozoic to Early Cambrian bloom of oxygenic photosynthesis, with alginite deposits (sapropelite; “stone coal”), barite, polymetallic black shales and phosphorites along the passive continental paleo-margin of the Yangtze craton. Here, we present a comprehensive geochemical analysis of drill core samples from the Zhijin phosphorite deposit, including Cr isotope, Fe speciation, and bulk elemental composition of dolostone, phosphorite and black shale from the Ediacaran to Early Cambrian sequence. The positively fractionated δ53Cr values of 0.11 to 1.81 ‰ of leachates from Ediacaran dolostone and Terreneuvian phosphorite indicate intensive oxidative terrestrial weathering. The phosphorite samples exhibit REE distribution patterns similar to modern seawater and strongly negative Ce anomalies (0.47–0.61), suggesting an oxic, open ocean environment. In contrast, the absence of Ce anomaly, high FeHR/FeT, and Fepy/FeHR ratios, enhanced redox-sensitive element concentrations, high Mo/TOC and TS/TOC, and high molar Corg:P ratios suggest euxinic to anoxic conditions for the overlying black shale sedimentation in a restricted sedimentary marine environment. Bulk-rock shale samples retain the positively fractionated Cr isotope pattern. The dramatic change from oxic to anoxic conditions aligns with the fossil record, which shows a proliferation of small shelly fossils in the phosphorite and their extinction in the overlying black shales, likely by hydrogen sulfide poisoning. We infer that nutrient-rich, oxidized upwelling seawater transported phosphorus and other nutrients to the photic zone, from where organic matter settled down to the seafloor and formed thick phosphorite beds at the oxic-anoxic boundary at and below the seafloor. Our study highlights that atmospheric and seawater oxygenation accelerated the Early Cambrian bio-diversification, and the subsequent restricted basin situation is responsible for the extinction at the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian boundary.

Oxidation mechanism of anisole initiated by the hydroxyl radicals in the atmosphere

Anisole (C7H8O, AN), as a common industrial solvent and a promising renewable biofuel, could be a potential air pollutant. The atmospheric oxidation mechanism of AN in the gas phase, initiated by its reaction with the OH radical, is investigated here using quantum chemistry and chemical kinetics calculations. The reaction starts mainly by OH additions to the aromatic ring, with minor contribution from hydrogen atom abstraction from the methyl group. The fate of adducts AN-i-OH (Ri) (i = 1, 2 and 4) is investigated here. Calculations show that R1 decomposes predominantly to phenol and CH3O while adduct R2 reacts dominantly with O2 by hydrogen-atom abstraction to form 2-methoxyphenol. The mechanism suggests that the dominant oxidation routes do not require the participation of NOx and therefore would not lead to significant ozone formation. The main products in the gas phase are the ring-retaining compound phenol and 2-methoxyphenol, which should be the intermediate compounds for formation of high oxygenated molecules (HOMs).

Unraveling the atmospheric oxidation mechanism and kinetics of naphthalene: Insights from theoretical exploration

Naphthalene, the most abundant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in the atmosphere, significantly influences OH consumption and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. Naphthoquinone (NQ) is a significant contributor to ring-retaining SOA from naphthalene degradation, impacting the redox properties and toxicity of ambient particles. However, inconsistencies persist regarding concentrations of its isomers, 1,2-NQ and 1,4-NQ. In present work, our theoretical investigation into naphthalene's reaction with OH and subsequent oxygenation unveils their role in SOA formation. The reaction kinetics of initial OH and subsequent O2 oxidation was extensively studied using high-level quantum chemical methods (DLPNO-CCSD(T)/aug-ccpVQZ//M052x-D3/6–311++G(d,p)) combined with RRKM/master equation simulations. The reactions mainly proceed through electrophilic addition and abstraction from the aromatic ring. The total rate coefficient of naphthalene + OH at 300 K and 1 atm from our calculation (7.2 × 10−12 cm3 molecule−1 s−1) agrees well with previous measurements (∼1 × 10−11 cm3 molecule−1 s−1). The computed branching ratios facilitate accurate product yield determination. The largest yield of 1-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl radical (add1) producing the major precursor of RO2 is computed to be 93.8 % in the ambient environment. Our calculated total rate coefficient (5.2 × 10−16 cm3 molecule−1 s−1) for add1 + O2 closely matches that of limited experimental data (8.0 × 10−16 cm3 molecule−1 s−1). Peroxy radicals (RO2) generated from add1 + O2 include 4-cis/trans-(1-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)-peroxy radical (add1-4OOadd-cis/trans, 66.0 %/17.5 %), 2-cis/trans-(1-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)-peroxy radical (add1-2OOadd-cis/trans, 10.3 %/6.3 %). Regarding the debated predominance of 1,4-NQ (corresponding to the parent RO2, i.e., add1-4OOadd-cis/trans) and 1,2-NQ (corresponding to the parent RO2, i.e., add1-2OOadd-cis/trans) in the atmosphere, our findings substantiate the dominance of 1,4-NQ. This study also indicates potential weakening of 1,4-NQ's dominance due to competition from decomposition reactions of add1-4OOadd-cis/trans and add1-2OOadd-cis/trans. Precise reaction kinetics data are essential for characterizing SOA transformation derived from naphthalene and assessing their climatic impacts within modeling frameworks.

Unravelling the atmospheric and climate implications of hydrogen leakage

In recent years, hydrogen is adopted as a clean source of energy to combat emissions and climate change resulting from fossil fuels. All along the value chain of hydrogen economy, leakage of hydrogen is possible which is expected to have profound impacts on air quality and climate. In the present study, quantum chemistry calculations are employed to understand the atmospheric oxidation mechanism of H2 by OH and O3. The results reveal that oxidation of H2 by both the OH and O3 are both possible and the reaction of H2 with O3 is thermodynamically favoured over its reaction with OH radical. The O3 initiated reaction of H2 is around 80 kcal/mol more exothermic than that of the OH initiated reaction. The O3 initiated reactions of H2 has longer lifetime in the atmosphere when compared to OH initiated reactions. This shows that in addition to undergoing OH radical initiated reaction, where ozone is formed as a product, the H2 can also undergo oxidation by O3 leading to the tropospheric ozone loss processes. Depending upon the background atmospheric concentration, either the OH radical generation is suppressed and methane is formed or the H2 can undergo oxidation with O3. The global warming potential (GWP) weighted emissions for hydrogen leakage incidents reported in the literature is obtained. The emissions are maximum from the hydrogen leakage in transportation and power sectors and minimum in the pipeline leakage. Taken together the atmospheric oxidation potential of H2 by OH radical and O3 oxidation and its GWP weighted emissions, it is clear from the study that the atmospheric and climate implications of H2 leakage is relatively less. The present study is based on molecular level and a rigorous model accounting the atmospheric composition is required for better understanding of the atmospheric and climate implications.

Volatile Methyl Siloxane Atmospheric Oxidation Mechanism from a Theoretical Perspective─How is the Siloxanol Formed?

Despite several investigations on the atmospheric fate of cyclic volatile methyl siloxanes (VMS), the oxidation chemistry of these purely anthropogenic, high production volume compounds is poorly understood. This led to uncertainties in the environmental impact and fate of the oxidation products. According to laboratory measurements, the main VMS oxidation product is the siloxanol (a -CH3 replaced with an -OH); however, none of the mechanisms proposed to date satisfactorily explain its formation. Motivated by our previous experimental observations of VMS oxidation products, we use theoretical quantum chemical calculations to (1) explore a previously unconsidered reaction pathway to form the siloxanol from a reaction of a siloxy radical with gas-phase water, (2) investigate differences in reaction rates of radical intermediates in hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3) and octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) oxidation, and (3) attempt to explain the experimentally observed products. Our results suggest that while the proposed reaction of the siloxy radical with water to form the siloxanol can occur, it is too slow to compete with other unimolecular reactions and thus cannot explain the observed siloxanol formation. We also find that the reaction between the initial D3 peroxy radical (RO2•) with HO2• is slower than previously anticipated (calculated as 3 × 10-13 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 for D3 and 2 × 10-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 for D4 compared to the general rate of ∼1 × 10-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1). Finally, we compare the anticipated fates of the RO2• under a variety of conditions and find that a reaction with NO (assuming a general RO2• + NO bimolecular rate constant of 9 × 10-12 cm3 molecule-1 s-1) will likely be the dominant fate in urban conditions, while isomerization can be important in cleaner environments.

The atmospheric oxidation mechanism of acetophenone initiated by the hydroxyl radicals

Acetophenone (C8H8O, AP) is a common indoor air component but with no information on its atmospheric oxidation. The atmospheric oxidation mechanism of AP in gas phase, initiated by its reaction with the OH radical, is investigated here using quantum chemistry and chemical kinetics calculations. The reaction starts mainly by OH additions to the aromatic ring, and the predicted rate coefficient suggests a lifetime of ∼8 days in the atmosphere. The additions form adducts AP-i-OH (Ri) (i = 1, 2, 3, 4, the position on the aromatic ring). The adducts Ri would react with O2 or undergo unimolecular decompositions. The adduct R1 reacts with O2 rather slowly with an effective rate coefficients of <10−20 cm3 molecule−1 s−1, and it would alternatively decompose to phenol and acetyl radical. The dominate fate of R2, R3, and R4 in their reaction with O2 proceeds via direct hydrogen-atom abstraction, forming hydroxyacetophenones, and only R3 would have a fraction of bicyclic radical formation as in oxidation of alkyl benzenes. The main products from oxidation of AP include phenol and three isomers of hydroxyacetophenones, suggesting that oxidation of AP by OH would reduce its unpleasant effect to human beings.

Theoretical and experimental evidences for the formation of carbonate anion radical (CO3−•) in the atmosphere

Troposphere is the lowest layer where the oxidation reactions responsible for the atmospheric self-purification of contaminants occur, which are initiated mostly by hydroxyl radicals (HO•). In this context, the objective of the present work was to carry out theoretical and experimental studies on the formation of the carbonate anion radical (CO3−•) in the atmosphere and evaluate the spontaneity of chemical reactions that occur at molecular. Experimental tests to evaluate the formation of CO3−• in the atmosphere were conducted using rainwater samples containing 5, 10, and 15 mg L−1 of sodium carbonate, and the addition of methylene blue dye was used to indicate the formation of the CO3−• by monitoring its degradation. Exposure of the samples to solar radiation led to a greater degradation of the dye in rainwater samples with higher concentrations of bicarbonate. The determination of the alkalinity of the samples revealed that the predominant chemical species in the medium was the bicarbonate anion and that the increase in its concentration promotes the formation of CO3−•. As a result of the simulation of the reactions with the radicals •OH, •OOH, and CO3−• at the level of theory MP2/6–311++G (2df,p), it was obtained that the formation of the radical CO3−• is possible (HO• + CO32− → HO− + CO3−• and HCO3− + HO• → H2O + CO3−•). The simulations were carried out in aqueous phase with implicit solvent, in the gas and showed the same trends. Furthermore, the reactions involving CO3−• with atmospheric molecules are spontaneous (ΔrG298 < 0) for electron-rich groups as H2S compounds, indicating that the radical CO3−• can react with some atmospheric molecules, and thus contribute to the atmospheric oxidation mechanisms.

Experimental study on synchrotron radiation photoionization of secondary organic aerosol derived from styrene ozonolysis

AbstractSecondary organic aerosol (SOA) produced by ozonolysis of styrene and other alkene compounds is a major part of fine particles in urban atmospheres. The atmospheric ozonolysis process of styrene is simulated in a smog chamber, and the formed SOA particles are detected on‐line by a synchronous radiation vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometer (VUV‐PIMS) in this study. Through molecular ion peaks in the photonionization mass spectra of SOA and the corresponding photoionization efficiency curve, combined with off‐line measurement verification of ultraviolet visible and infrared absorption spectra, it is determined that formaldehyde, formic acid, benzene, phenol, benzaldehyde, and benzoic acid are the main constituents of styrene SOA. These provide new information for studying the atmospheric ozonolysis oxidation mechanism of styrene. VUV‐PIMS can get over complicated sample preparation procedures, secondary pollution, and other shortcomings of the off‐line method and is a useful instrument to measure constituents and unveil the formation process of SOA particles.

Atmospheric degradation mechanism of anthracene initiated by OH•: A DFT prediction

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the M06-2X/def2-TZVP level have been employed to investigate the atmospheric oxidation mechanism of anthracene (ANT) initiated by HO•. Direct hydrogen atom abstraction from the ANT using HO• takes place hardly at ambient conditions while addition of HO• to the C1, C2, and C4 sites are thermodynamically and kinetically more advantageous. The addition reactions are controlled by the aromaticity and the kinetic trends were justified by resonance stabilization energies. The rate constants were calculated by using the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) and canonical transition state theory (CTST) methods in conjugation with zero curvature tunneling (ZCT). The overall RRKM-bimolecular rate constant at ambient conditions is 6.72 × 10−12 cm3 molecule−1 s−1, is negatively dependent on the temperature and can be expressed as k250−3501bar=3.92×10−14exp(1534.9T). Contribution of the AD-C4 path in the overall reaction is about 70–80%, implying that the dependence of overall rate constant on pressure can be ignored. The kinetic data exhibit that the ANT is degraded during its long-range transport in the atmosphere and cannot be classified as persistent organic pollutants.

Impact of a single water molecule on the atmospheric oxidation of thiophene by hydroperoxyl radical

Water as an important assistant can alter the reactivity of atmospheric species. This project is designed to investigate the impact of a single water molecule on the atmospheric reactions of aromatic compounds that have not been attended to comprehensively. In the first part, the atmospheric oxidation mechanisms of thiophene initiated by hydroperoxyl radical through a multiwell-multichannel potential energy surface were studied to have useful information about the chemistry of the considered reaction. It was verified that for the thiophene plus HO2 reaction, the addition mechanism is dominant the same as other aromatic compounds. Due to the importance of the subject and the presence of water molecules in the atmosphere with a high concentration that we know as relative humidity, and also the lack of insight into the influence of water on the reactions of aromatic compounds with active atmospheric species, herein, the effect of a single water molecule on the addition pathways of the title reaction is evaluated. In another word, this research explores how water can change the occurrence of reactions of aromatic compounds in the atmosphere. For this, the presence of one water molecule is simulated by higher-level calculations (BD(T) method) through the main interactions with the stationary points of the most probable pathways. The results show that the mechanism of the reaction with water is more complicated than the bare reaction due to the formation of the ring-like structures. Also, water molecule decreases the relative energies of all addition pathways. Moreover, atoms in molecule theory (AIM) along with the kinetic study by the transition state (TST) and the Rice–Ramsperger–Kassel–Marcus (RRKM) theories demonstrate that the overall interactions of a path determine how the rate of that path changes. In this regard, our results establish that the interactions of water with HO2 (thiophene) in the initial complex 1WHA (1WTA or 1WTB) are stronger (weaker) than the sum of its interactions in transition states. Also, for the water-assisted pathways, the ratio of the partition function of the transition state to the partition functions of the reactants is similar to the respective bare reaction. Therefore, the reaction rates of the bare pathways are more than the water-assisted paths that include the 1WHA complex and are less than the paths that involve the 1WTA and 1WTB complexes.

Peroxy Radical Autoxidation and Sequential Oxidation in Organic Nitrate Formation during Limonene Nighttime Oxidation.

Limonene is an abundant monoterpene released into the atmosphere via biogenic emissions and biomass burning. However, the atmospheric oxidation and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation mechanisms of limonene, especially during nighttime, remain largely understudied. In this work, limonene was oxidized synergistically by ozone (O3) and nitrate radicals (NO3) in a flow tube reactor and a continuous flow stirred tank reactor. Upon oxidation, many highly oxidized organic nitrates and nitrooxy peroxy radicals (RO2) were observed in the gas phase within 1 min. Combining quantum chemical calculations with kinetic simulations, we found that the primary nitrooxy RO2 (C10H16NO5) through NO3 addition at the more substituted endocyclic double bond and at the exocyclic double bond (previously considered as minor pathways) can undergo autoxidation with rate constants of around 0.02 and 20 s-1 at 298 K, respectively. These pathways could explain a major portion of the observed highly oxidized organic nitrates. In the SOA, highly oxidized mono- and dinitrates (e.g., C10H17NO7-8 and C10H16,18N2O8-10) make up a significant contribution, highlighting nitrooxy RO2 autoxidation and sequential NO3 oxidation of limonene. The same organic nitrates are also observed in ambient aerosol during biomass burning and nighttime in the southeastern United States. Therefore, the present work provides new insights into the nighttime oxidation of limonene and SOA formation in the atmosphere.

Atmospheric oxidation mechanism and kinetics of indole initiated by ●OH and ●Cl: a computational study

Abstract. The atmospheric chemistry of organic nitrogen compounds (ONCs) is of great importance for understanding the formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines, and ONC oxidation products might influence atmospheric aerosol particle formation and growth. Indole is a polyfunctional heterocyclic secondary amine with a global emission quantity almost equivalent to that of trimethylamine, the amine with the highest atmospheric emission. However, the atmospheric chemistry of indole remains unclear. Herein, the reactions of indole with ⚫OH and ⚫Cl, and subsequent reactions of resulting indole radicals with O2 under 200 ppt NO and 50 ppt HO2⚫ conditions, were investigated by a combination of quantum chemical calculations and kinetics modeling. The results indicate that ⚫OH addition is the dominant pathway for the reaction of ⚫OH with indole. However, both ⚫Cl addition and H abstraction are feasible for the corresponding reaction with ⚫Cl. All favorably formed indole radicals further react with O2 to produce peroxy radicals, which mainly react with NO and HO2⚫ to form organonitrates, alkoxy radicals and hydroperoxide products. Therefore, the oxidation mechanism of indole is distinct from that of previously reported amines, which primarily form highly oxidized multifunctional compounds, imines or carcinogenic nitrosamines. In addition, the peroxy radicals from the ⚫OH reaction can form N-(2-formylphenyl)formamide (C8H7NO2), for the first time providing evidence for the chemical identity of the C8H7NO2 mass peak observed in the ⚫OH + indole experiments. More importantly, this study is the first to demonstrate that despite forming radicals by abstracting an H atom at the N site, carcinogenic nitrosamines were not produced in the indole oxidation reaction.

Thermochemistry and Kinetics of the Atmospheric Oxidation Reactions of Propanesulfinyl Chloride Initiated by OH Radicals: A Computational Approach.

The thermochemistry and kinetics of the atmospheric oxidation mechanism for propanesulfinyl chloride (CH3-CH2-CH2-S(═O)Cl; PSICl) initiated by the hydroxyl (OH) radical were investigated with high level quantum chemistry calculations and the Master equation solver for multi-energy well reaction (Mesmer) kinetic code. The mechanism for the oxidation of PSICl in the presence of OH radical can proceed via H-abstraction and substitution pathways. The CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pV(T+d)Z//MP2/aug-cc-pV(T+d)Z level calculated energies revealed addition of the OH radical to the S-atom of the sulfinyl (-S(═O)) moiety, followed by cleavage of the Cl-S(═O) single bond, leading to formation of propanesulfinic acid (PSIA) and the Cl radical to be the major pathway when compared to all other possible channels. The transition state barrier height for this reaction was found to be -3.0 kcal mol-1 relative to the energy of the starting PSICl + OH radical reactants. The rate coefficients were calculated for all possible paths in the atmospherically relevant temperature range of 200-320 K and at 1 atm. The rate coefficient for the formation of the PSIA + Cl radical from the PSICl + OH radical reaction was found to be 8.2 × 10-12 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at 298 K and a pressure of 1 atm. From branching ratio calculations, it was revealed that the reaction resulting in the formation of the PSIA + Cl radical contributed ∼52% to the total reaction. The overall rate coefficient for the PSICl + OH reaction was also calculated and found to be 1.6 × 10-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at 298 K and a pressure of 1 atm. In the aggregate, the results indicate the atmospheric lifetime of PSICl to be ∼12-20 h in the temperature range between 200 and 320 K, which suggests that its contribution to global warming is negligible. However, the degradation products revealed to be formed in its interactions with the OH radical, which include that SO2, Cl radical, HO2 radical, and propylene have significant effects on the formation of acid rain, secondary organic aerosols, the ozone layer, and global warming.

Compilation of reaction kinetics parameters determined in the Key Development Project for Air Pollution Formation Mechanism and Control Technologies in China

A compilation of new advances made in the research field of laboratory reaction kinetics in China's Key Development Project for Air Pollution Formation Mechanism and Control Technologies was presented. These advances are grouped into six broad, interrelated categories, including volatile organic compound (VOC) oxidation, secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation, new particle formation (NPF) and gas-particle partitioning, ozone chemistry, model parameters, and secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA) formation, highlighting the laboratory work done by Chinese researchers. For smog chamber applications, the current knowledge gained from laboratory studies is reviewed, with emphasis on summarizing the oxidation mechanisms of long-chain alkanes, aromatics, alkenes, aldehydes/ketones in the atmosphere, SOA formation from anthropogenic emission sources, and oxidation of aromatics, isoprene, and limonene, as well as SIA formation. For flow tube applications, atmospheric oxidation mechanisms of toluene and methacrolein, SOA formation from limonene oxidation by ozone, gas-particle partitioning of peroxides, and sulfuric acid-water (H2SO4-H2O) binary nucleation, methanesulfonic acid-water (MSA-H2O) binary nucleation, and sulfuric acid-ammonia-water (H2SO4-NH3-H2O) ternary nucleation are discussed.

Kinetic and Mechanistic Investigations of OH-Initiated Atmospheric Degradation of Methyl Butyl Ketone.

Methyl butyl ketone (MBK, 2-hexanone) is a common atmospheric oxygenated volatile organic compound (OVOC) owing to broad industrial applications, but its atmospheric oxidation mechanism remains poorly understood. Herein, the detailed mechanisms and kinetic properties of MBK oxidation initiated by OH radicals and subsequent transformation of the resulting intermediates are performed by employing quantum chemical and kinetic modeling methods. The calculations show that H-abstraction at the C4 position of MBK is more favorable than those at the other positions, with the total rate coefficient of k(T) = 4.13 × 10-14 exp(1576/T) cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at 273-400 K. The dominant pathway of unimolecular degradation of the C-centered alkyl radical is 1,2-acyl group migration. For the isomerization of the peroxy radical RO2, 1,5- and 1,6-H shifts are more favorable than 1,3- and 1,4-H shifts. The multiconformer rate coefficient kMC-TST of the first H-shift of the RO2 radical is estimated to be 1.40 × 10-3 s-1 at room temperature. Compared to the H-shifts of analogous aliphatic RO2 radicals, it can be concluded that the carbonyl group enhances the H-shift rates by as much as 2-4 orders of magnitude. The rate coefficients of the RO2 radical reaction with the HO2 radical exhibit a weakly negative temperature dependence, and the pseudo-first-order rate constant k'HO2 = kHO2[HO2] is calculated to be 3.32-22.10 × 10-3 s-1 at ambient temperature. The bimolecular reaction of the RO2 radical with NO leads to the formation of 3-oxo-butanal as the main product with the formation concentration of 2.2-7.4 μg/m3 in urban areas. The predicted pseudo-first-order rate constant k'NO = kNO[NO] is 2.20-9.98 s-1 at room temperature. By comparing the kMC-TST, k'HO2, and k'NO, it can be concluded that reaction with NO is the dominant removal pathway for the RO2 radical formed from the OH-initiated oxidation of MBK. These findings are expected to deepen our understanding of the photochemical oxidation of ketones under realistic atmospheric conditions.

Rate constant and mechanism of the OH-initiated degradation of 3-penten-2-one in the atmosphere

A systematic investigation has been performed on OH-initiated atmospheric oxidation mechanism of 3-penten-2-one (3P2) using a high-level ab initio method. The energy profile diagram information is obtained at the CCSD(T)/6-311++G(d,p)//BH&HLYP/6-311++G(d,p) + 0.9335 × ZPE levels of theory. The calculated total rate constant at 298 K using the transition state theory with tunneling corrections is found to be 3.28 × 10−11 cm3 molecule−1 s−1, which is in reasonable agreement with the experimental determination. The temperature-dependent rate constant for the reaction of 3P2 with OH radicals from 200 to 1000 K is predicted to be k = 4.44 × 10−24 × T3.9 × exp(2177/T) cm3 molecule−1 s−1. Based on mechanistic studies, our results show that acetaldehyde [CH3C(O)H], methyl glyoxal [CH3C(O)C(O)H], 2-hydroxypropanal[CH3CHOHC(O)H], peroxyacetyl nitrate CH3C(O)OONO2 (PAN), CO2, formaldehyde [HC(O)H], and CH3C(O)CHOHC(O)CH3 are the predominant products for the 3P2 + OH reaction under atmospheric conditions, which agrees closely with the experimental findings.

Tower-based measurements of NMHCs and OVOCs in the Pearl River Delta: Vertical distribution, source analysis and chemical reactivity

Measurements of vertical distribution of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have attracted wide attentions, which could help to understand atmospheric oxidation mechanism and provide implications for VOC control. This study measured the non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) and oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) simultaneously for the first time at three different heights, namely ground, 118 m and 488 m, in the Canton Tower located in the urban core of the Pearl River Delta (PRD). The results show that NMHCs decreased while some OVOC species such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde increased with increasing height. It was mainly attributed to the dilution and chemical loss of NMHCs but secondary production of OVOCs during vertical transport. Ratio analysis and receptor modeling indicate that vehicle exhausts (47%) and fuel evaporation (39%) were major sources of the total NMHCs. Interestingly, industry contributed much more at 118 m, probably affected by organic gas discharge from the high chimney of industrial factories. The chemical reactivities in terms of OH radical loss rate (LOH), ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol potential (SOAP) were lowest at 118 m, smaller than those influenced by high fresh NMHC emissions at ground and strong formation of secondary species (e.g. OVOCs) at 488 m. OH exposure estimated by isoprene and m,p-xylene/ethylbenzene was different depending on their time scale of vertical turbulent mixing and chemical loss. OVOC species measured at different heights were positively correlated with Ox (R = 0.48–0.87), indicating that OVOCs were largely contributed by secondary formation in photochemical process. The tower measurements of NMHCs and OVOCs provided a unique opportunity to investigate the VOC distribution and chemical behaviors, which could give important information for understanding O3 and PM2.5 pollution mechanism in the PRD region with fast developing urban setting and substantially changing air quality.

Atmospheric Fate of the CH3SOO Radical from the CH3S + O2 Equilibrium.

The atmospheric oxidation mechanisms of reduced sulfur compounds are of great importance in the biogeochemical sulfur cycle. The CH3S radical represents an important intermediate in these oxidation processes. Under atmospheric conditions, CH3S will predominantly react with O2 to form the peroxy radical CH3SOO. The formed CH3SOO has two competing unimolecular reaction pathways: isomerization to CH3SO2, which further decomposes into CH3 and SO2, or a hydrogen shift followed by HO2 loss, leading to CH2S. Previous theoretical calculations have suggested that CH2S formation should be the dominant pathway, in disagreement with existing experimental results. Our large active space multireference configuration interaction calculations agree with the experimental results that the formation of CH3 and SO2 is the dominant route and the formation of CH2S and HO2 can, at most, be a minor pathway. We support the calculations with new experiments starting from the OH + CH3SH reaction for CH3S formation under low NOx conditions and find a SO2 yield of 0.86 ± 0.18 within our reaction time of 7.9 s. Model simulations of our experiments show that the SO2 yield converges to 0.98. This combined theoretical and experimental study thus furthers the understanding of the general oxidation mechanisms of sulfur compounds in the atmosphere.

Atmospheric Chemistry of Allylic Radicals from Isoprene: A Successive Cyclization-Driven Autoxidation Mechanism.

The atmospheric chemistry of isoprene has broad implications for regional air quality and the global climate. Allylic radicals, taking 13-17% yield in the isoprene oxidation by •Cl, can contribute as much as 3.6-4.9% to all possible formed intermediates in local regions at daytime. Considering the large quantity of isoprene emission, the chemistry of the allylic radicals is therefore highly desirable. Here, we investigated the atmospheric oxidation mechanism of the allylic radicals using quantum chemical calculations and kinetics modeling. The results indicate that the allylic radicals can barrierlessly combine with O2 to form peroxy radicals (RO2•). Under ≤100 ppt NO and ≤50 ppt HO2• conditions, the formed RO2• mainly undergo two times "successive cyclization and O2 addition" to finally form the product fragments 2-alkoxy-acetaldehyde (C2H3O2•) and 3-hydroperoxy-2-oxopropanal (C3H4O4). The presented reaction illustrates a novel successive cyclization-driven autoxidation mechanism. The formed 3-hydroperoxy-2-oxopropanal product is a new isomer of the atmospheric C3H4O4 family and a potential aqueous-phase secondary organic aerosol precursor. Under >100 ppt NO condition, NO can mediate the cyclization-driven autoxidation process to form C5H7NO3, C5H7NO7, and alkoxy radical-related products. The proposed novel autoxidation mechanism advances our current understanding of the atmospheric chemistry of both isoprene and RO2•.
