Production and test of BI-RPC detectors for ATLAS Phase-2 upgrade

The current Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) system is undergoing a major upgrade (ATL (2017)), consisting in the installation of approximately 1000 RPC detector units in the innermost barrel layer of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer. The goal of the project is to increase the detector coverage, currently limited to approximately 80%, and improve the trigger robustness and efficiency. The production of the gas volumes takes place in Italy, in Germany and China, while the readout panels in Cosenza (Italy) and Hefei (China). The Italian collaboration is taking care of the construction and test of the chambers located in the large sectors of the ATLAS barrel (BIL). Here we present the state of the art of the production, certification and logistics related to all the components produced at the Italian sites, as well as the assembly line and characterization of the BIL chambers at CERN with cosmic rays. The certification results of the components produced are analyzed and discussed.

Construction and performance of the precision tracking chambers for the ATLAS muon spectrometer upgrade for high-luminosity LHC

For the operation at the High-Luminosity (HL) LHC, the Monitored Drift Tube (MDT) chambers of the inner barrel layer (BIS) of the ATLAS muon spectrometer will be replaced by small-diameter Muon Drift Tube (sMDT) chambers which will be integrated with triplets of thin-gap Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) in order to improve the acceptance and robustness of the barrel muon trigger system. The sMDT chambers have half the drift tube diameter of the MDT chambers and about one order of magnitude higher background rate capability. The construction of the 96 new sMDT chambers was performed between January 2021 and September 2023 at two production sites at a continuous rate of one chamber every two weeks. The sense wire positioning accuracy guaranteed by precision assembly jigs was measured to be around 5μm over the whole construction period. Stringent performance tests had to be passed during the production which have been successfully repeated after delivery of the chambers to CERN. The chambers have been tested with the new MDT front-end ASICs developed for operation at HL-LHC which improve the spatial resolution of the drift tubes by 10% compared to readout with the legacy electronics.

Test result of the new ASD2 chips for Phase-II upgrade of the ATLAS MDT chambers at HL-LHC

For the Phase-II upgrade of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer to High-Luminosity LHC, new front-end readout electronics for the Monitored Drift Tube chambers is required, as the old one no longer meets the demands. The first stage in the Monitored Drift Tubes readout chain is the Amplifier-Shaper-Discriminator chip. For the upgrade, the new ASD2 ASIC chip in IBM 130 nm CMOS technology has been developed. For the ATLAS experiment, 80000 ASD2 chips are produced, which have to be tested before integration in order to obtain the required 50000 well-performing chips in the end. Using a prototype tester board and pre-production ASD2 chips, the overall performance and the influence on programmable parameters is investigated. Based on these results, 1775 production chips are tested to define final optimized cut values for the automated production testing of all chips in the company.

ATLAS New Small Wheel performance studies after first year of operation

After successfully completing Phase I upgrades during LHC Long Shutdown 2, the ATLAS detector is back in operation with several upgrades implemented. The most important and challenging upgrade is in the Muon Spectrometer, where the two inner forward muon stations have been replaced with the New Small Wheels (NSWs) system featuring two entirely new detector technologies: small strip Thin Gap Chambers (sTGC) and the resistive Micromegas (MM). After massive construction, testing and installation work in ATLAS, the two NSWs end-caps have now been in operation for about a year in the experiment, participating in the muon spectrometer tracking system and muon trigger system. A huge effort has gone into the operation of the new data acquisition system, as well as the implementation of a new processing chain within the muon software framework. Tracking is performed with full consideration of the absolute alignment of each individual detector module by the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer optical alignment system. All the deviations from the nominal geometry of all the constituent elements of each sTGC and MM module are accounted for through the modelling of the real chamber geometry reconstructed from the information of the construction databases. After an overview of the strategies adopted for the simulations and reconstruction, the studies on the performance of the NSW system in its first year of operation with LHC Run3 data will be reported.

Ready for LHC Run III: the ATLAS New Small Wheel and the MicroMegas chambers performances

The two New Small Wheels (NSW) for the upgrade of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer are now installed in the experiment and ready to collect data in LHC Run III, started in July 2022. The NSW is the largest Phase-1 upgrade project of ATLAS. Its challenging completion and readiness for data taking is a remarkable achievement of the Collaboration. The two wheels (10 meters in diameter) replace the first muon stations in the high-rapidity regions of ATLAS and are equipped with multiple layers of two new detector technologies: the small strips Thin Gap Chambers (sTGC) and the MicroMegas (MM). The latter, belong to the family of Micro Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGD), for the first time used in such a large scale in HEP experiments. Each detector technology will cover more than 1200 m2 of active area. The new system is designed to assure high tracking efficiency, reduction of fake trigger rates and precision measurement of muon tracks, also in view of the higher background environment foreseen for Hi-Lumi LHC. In this presentation, the motivation of the NSW upgrade and the steps from the commissioning to the data taking together with the first results using the Run III data will be presented, focusing on the MicroMegasperformances.

The New Small Wheel electronics

The increase in luminosity, and consequent higher backgrounds, of the LHC upgrades require improved rejection of fake tracks in the forward region of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer. The New Small Wheel upgrade of the Muon Spectrometer aims to reduce the large background of fake triggers from track segments that don't originate from the interaction point. The New Small Wheel employs two detector technologies, the resistive strip Micromegas detectors and the “small” Thin Gap Chambers, with a total of 2.45 million electrodes to be sensed. The two technologies require the design of a complex electronics system given that it consists of two different detector technologies and is required to provide both precision readout and a fast trigger. It will operate in a high background radiation region up to about 20 kHz/cm2 at the expected HL-LHC luminosity of ℒ = 7.5 × 1034 cm-2 s-1. The architecture of the system is strongly defined by the GBTx data aggregation ASIC, the newly-introduced FELIX data router and the software based data handler of the ATLAS detector. The electronics complex of this new detector was designed and developed in the last ten years and consists of multiple radiation tolerant Application Specific Integrated Circuits, multiple front-end boards, dense boards with FPGA's and purpose-built Trigger Processor boards within the ATCA standard. The New Small Wheel has been installed in 2021 and is undergoing integration within ATLAS for LHC Run 3. It should operate through the end of Run 4 (December 2032). In this manuscript, the overall design of the New Small Wheel electronics is presented.

The ultimate performance of the Rasnik 3-point alignment system

The Rasnik system is a 3-point optical displacement monitor with sub-nanometer precision. The CCD-Rasnik alignment system was developed in 1993 for monitoring the alignment of the muon chambers of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer at CERN. Since then, the development has continued as new CMOS imaging pixel chips became available. In this work the system processes and parameters that limit the precision are studied. We conclude that the spatial resolution of Rasnik is only limited by the quantum fluctuations of the photon flux arriving at the pixels of the image sensor. The results of two Rasnik systems are compared to results from simulations, which are in good agreement. The best spatial resolution obtained was 7 pm/Hz. Finally, some applications of high-precision Rasnik systems are set out.

Construction of precision sMDT detector for the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer upgrade

This paper describes the small-diameter monitored drift-tube detector construction at the University of Michigan as a contribution to the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer upgrade for the high-luminosity Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Measurements of the first 30 chambers built at Michigan show that the drift tube wire position accuracy meets the specification of 20 μm. The positions of the platforms for alignment and magnetic field sensors are all installed well within the required precision. The cosmic ray test measurements show single wire tracking resolution of 100 ± 7 μm with an average detection efficiency above 99%. The infrastructure, tooling, techniques, and procedures for chamber production are described in detail. The results from the chamber quality control tests of the first 30 constructed chambers are reported.

Certification of a new generation of Resistive Plate Chambers for the Phase-1 BIS78 upgrade of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer

In preparation for the coming years of LHC running at higher luminosity, two upgrade projects of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer have been developed: the New Small Wheel project, improving the trigger in the end-cap regions, and the BIS78 project, dedicated to the transition region between the barrel and the endcaps (1< |η| <1.3). The BIS78 project will add 32 RPC triplets on the edges of the inner barrel sectors where the ATLAS toroid is present. These new generation of RPCs are characterized by thinner gas gaps (1 mm vs 2 mm of the legacy RPCs) as well as thinner resistive electrodes, together with a new high gain front-end electronics operating at lower voltage. Sixteen BIS78 stations have been already installed in the ATLAS Muon spectrometer between 2020 and 2021 and are being commissioned during this year. The status of the project, the status of the commissioning as well as the overall performances of the installed RPCs will be presented.

The New Small Wheel High Voltage Infrastructure

The ATLAS Muon Spectrometer is subjected to a series of upgrades in order to face the High Luminosity era of Phase-II. One of the main projects is the New Small Wheel (NSW), which has replaced the existing Small Wheel (SW), and is a perfect complement to the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer (MS) in the Endcap regions. The NSW is the combination of two prototype detector technologies, the small Thin Gap Chambers (sTGC) and the resistive Micromegas (MM). In order to operate smoothly the two technologies, a dedicated hardware infrastructure has been installed and modified accordingly based on the needs of each muon sub-system. In order to control and monitor the hardware for both technologies a Detector Control System (DCS) has been developed, following the architecture of the legacy Muon sub-systems. Aim of this work is the presentation of the development and implementation of these HV DCS systems under the Point 1 schema.

The ATLAS ‘New Small Wheel’ Muon detector stations recently commissioned for LHC Run3

After nearly a decade of intense effort, the two New Small Wheels (NSW) for the upgrade of the ATLAS Muon spectrometer is now installed in the experiment and ready for final commissioning and to collect data in LHC Run3, starting March 2022. The NSW is the largest phase-1 upgrade project of ATLAS. It is challenging completion and readiness for data taking is a remarkable achievement of the collaboration. The two wheels (10 meters in diameter) replace the first Muon stations in the high-rapidity regions of ATLAS and are equipped with multiple layers of two completely new detector technologies: the small strips Thin Gap Chambers (sTGC) and the Micromegas (MM). The latter belongs to the family of Micro Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGD, for the first time used in such a large scale in HEP experiment). Each detector will cover more than 1200 m2 of the active area. The new system is required to maintain the present detector’s efficiency and momentum resolution level in the expected higher background level, given the ongoing LHC luminosity upgrades. Construction and testing of sMDT tubes at the University of Michigan for the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer upgrade

This paper reports on the design and construction of infrastructure and test stations for small-diameter monitored drift tube (sMDT) assembly and testing at the University of Michigan (UM) to prepare for the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer upgrade for the high-luminosity program of the Large Hadron Collider. Procedures of the tube assembly and quality assurance and control (QA/QC) tests are described in detail. More than 99% of the tubes meet the tube QA/QC specifications based on 2100 tubes built at UM. The UM test stations are also used for QA/QC testing on the tubes constructed at Michigan State University. These tubes are being used to construct the sMDT chambers which will replace the current MDT chambers of the barrel inner station of the Muon Spectrometer.

Search for events with a pair of displaced vertices from long-lived neutral particles decaying into hadronic jets in the ATLAS muon spectrometer in pp collisions at s=13 TeV

A search for events with two displaced vertices from long-lived particles (LLP) pairs using data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. This analysis uses 139~fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV recorded in 2015-2018. The search employs techniques for reconstructing vertices of LLPs decaying to jets in the muon spectrometer displaced between 3 m and 14 m with respect to the primary interaction vertex. The observed numbers of events are consistent with the expected background and limits for several benchmark signals are determined. For the Higgs boson with a mass of 125 GeV, the paper reports the first exclusion limits for branching fractions into neutral long-lived particles below 0.1%, while branching fractions above 10% are excluded at 95% confidence level for LLP proper lifetimes ranging from 4 cm to 72.4 m. In addition, the paper present the first results for the decay of LLPs into into $t\bar{t}$ in the ATLAS muon spectrometer.

Ultra-low jitter clock distribution for the trigger electronics of the New Small Wheel for the ATLAS experiment

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN plans to have a series of upgrades to increase its instantaneous luminosity to 7.5 × 1034 cm−2 s−1. The increased luminosity drastically impacts the ATLAS trigger and readout data rates. The inner-most station of the ATLAS muon spectrometer, the so-called Small Wheels is being replaced with a New Small Wheel (NSW) system, consisting of Micromegas and small-strip Thin Gap Chambers (sTGC) detectors. The on-detector radiation levels required radiation tolerant electronics. The lower radiation levels on the rim of the NSW allowed utilizing commercial electronic chips, such as Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), in the trigger chain of the sTGC detectors. Those FPGAs require an ultra-low jitter clock for the proper operation of their Gigabit transceivers (4.8 Gb/s serial links). The initial design was based on a clock provided by a radiation tolerant ASIC designed at CERN, but due to its intrinsic jitter and consequent marginal error rate on the transmission lines, a different approach had to be chosen. An additional clock source based on commercial jitter cleaners, fanout chips and optical transmitters driving dedicated fibers was built. The new scheme provides 64 low-jitter clocks (32 main and 32 redundant) from the radiation-protected area (USA15) to the trigger electronics over 60 m of OM3 fiber.

The large inner Micromegas modules for the Atlas Muon Spectrometer upgrade: Construction, quality control and characterization

The steadily increasing luminosity of the LHC requires an upgrade with high-rate and high-resolution detector technology for the inner end cap of the ATLAS muon spectrometer: the New Small Wheels (NSW). In order to achieve the goal of precision tracking at a hit rate of about 15 kHz/cm2 at the inner radius of the NSW, large area Micromegas quadruplets with 100µm spatial resolution per plane have been produced. IRFU, from the CEA research center of Saclay, is responsible for the production and validation of LM1 Micromegas modules. The construction, production, qualification and validation of the largest Micromegas detectors ever built are reported here. Performance results under cosmic muon characterization will also be discussed.

The Detector Control System of the New Small Wheel for the ATLAS experiment

The ATLAS Muon Spectrometer is going through an extensive Phase I upgrade to cope up with the future LHC runs of high luminosity of up to instantaneous luminosity of 7.5 × 1034cm−2s−1. The luminosity increase drastically impacts the ATLAS trigger and readout data rates. The present ATLAS Small Wheel Muon detector will be replaced with a New Small Wheel (NSW) detector which is expected to be installed in the ATLAS underground cavern by the end of the Long Shutdown 2 of the LHC. Due to its complexity and long-term operation, the NSW requires the development of a sophisticated Detector Control System (DCS). The use of such a system is necessary to allow the detector to function consistently and safely as well as to function as a seamless interface to all sub-detectors and the technical infrastructure of the experiment. The central system handles the transition between the probe’s possible operating states while ensuring continuous monitoring and archiving of the system’s operating parameters. Any abnormality in any subsystem of the detector triggers a signal or alert (alarm), which alerts the user and either adapts to automatic processes or allows manual actions to reset the system to function properly.

Implementation of the DCS System for the validation of MM HV Boards and the DCS System of the new BIS78 Chambers for the upgrade of muon system of the ATLAS Experiment

The ATLAS Muon Spectrometer is going through upgrades on the Phase I in order to achieve higher rates for the upcoming LHC runs. The two main projects of this Phase I upgrade are the New Small Wheels (NSW), which are expected to complement the ATLAS muon spectrometer in the end-cap regions and a smaller size project, known as BIS78 (Barrel Inner Small sectors).The NSW is expected to replace the Small Wheel (SW) and it will be installed in the ATLAS underground cavern during the summer by the end of the LHC Long Shutdown 2. This new system will be consisted by two prototype detectors, the sTGC (small Thin Gas Chambers) and the resistive Micromegas (MM).In order to cope with higher LHC luminosities, the installation of NSW will help the reduction of the trigger rate in the forward region. With half of the rate in the barrel-endcap transition region reduced by the existing TGCs, the other half of the fake trigger rate in transition region will be reduced by the new BIS78 stations. The BIS78 subproject foresees the replacement of the existing Monitored Drift Tubes (MDTs), used for the precise position measurement in this area, with muon stations formed by integrated smaller diameter tubes (sMDT) and a new generation of RPCs, capable of withstanding the higher rates and provide a robust standalone muon confirmation. The existing BIS7 and BIS8 MDT Chambers will be replaced by 16 new muon stations of one small (sMDT) chamber and two RPC triplets, and it will be the pilot project for the Phase II BI Upgrade.This work is divided into two parts. First will be presented the development and the implementation of a Detector Control System (DCS) for the HV system for the MM detectors of NSW and specifically the validation of a new type of HV Boards (A7038AP). Second, the development of the DCS for the monitoring and operation of the new sMDT chambers of the MDT Sub-System will be presented.

Construction and operation of large scale Micromegas detectors for the ATLAS Muon upgrade

After the forthcoming upgrade of the LHC accelerator at CERN, its luminosity will increase up to 7.5 × 1034 cm−2s−1. That will raise the readout rates and the background data to unmanageable levels for the existing ATLAS muon spectrometer. The ATLAS collaboration has proposed to replace the present small wheel muon detector with the New Small Wheel (NSW) to surpass those limitations. The new wheels consist of Micromegas (MM) and small-strip Thin Gap Chambers (sTGC). The first technology aims for precision tracking, and the last one for trigger purposes. Each wheel will be equipped with eight small and eight large sectors, while each sector will have a double MM wedge surrounded by sTGC wedges. The MM detectors for the NSW will be the largest developed Micro Pattern Gaseous Detector (MPGD) as they will cover an area up to 1280 m2. During detectors’ manufacture have been used various custom materials (PCBs, mesh) and innovative construction techniques. This paper describes the MM drift panels production at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki laboratory. Then will be presented resolution results of the MM detectors with cosmic-ray tests at CERN facilities.

Design of a Differential Safety Mechanism (DSM) Dedicated to the NSW Micromegas Wedges

The New Small Wheel Micromegas detector system for the Upgrade of ATLAS Muon Spectrometer is in the phase of integration and commissioning at the Laboratories BB5 and Building 191 at CERN respectively. In this framework, the produced modules are evaluated and tested at a Cosmic Ray Stand or at their final position on New Small Wheel. Providing gas mixture to the Micromegas Wedges, the static gauge pressure inside the detector’s layers must be kept below a nominal value around 3 mbar. Pressures above 10 mbar, due several reasons or gas line blocking, could cause serious damages in the detectors. In this work we describe the principle of operation and the design of a low cost intelligent unit, the “Differential Safety Mechanism”, dedicated to protect the Micromegas Wedges against unexpected slow or sudden increase of the static gauge pressure. The internal detailed structure, the simulation and the prototype tests of the DSM are presented analytically in this work.
