Context. The astrophysical gravitational wave background (AGWB) is a collective signal of astrophysical gravitational wave sources dominated by compact binaries. One key science goal of current and future gravitational wave detectors is to obtain its measurement. Aims. We aim to determine the population of compact binaries dominating the AGWB in the mHz band. We revisit and update an earlier work by Farmer & Phinney (2003, MNRAS, 346, 1197) to model the astrophysical gravitational wave background sourced by extragalactic white dwarf binaries in the mHz frequency band. Methods. We calculated the signal using a single-metallicity model for the white dwarf population in the Universe using the global star formation history. Results. We estimate the white dwarf AGWB amplitude to be ∼60% higher than the earlier estimate. We also find that the overall shape of the white dwarf AGWB shows a good fit with a broken power law combined with an exponential cut-off. Conclusions. We compare our results to present-day best estimates for the background due to black hole and neutron star binaries, finding that the white dwarf component is likely to dominate in the mHz band. We provide an order-of-magnitude estimate that explains this hierarchy and we comment on the implications for future missions that aim to detect the AGWB. We also note that the black hole AGWB may only be detectable at high frequency. We outline several improvements that can be made to our estimate, however, these points are unlikely to change our main conclusion, which posits that the white dwarf AGWB dominates the mHz band.

Non-Gaussianity from the cross-correlation of the astrophysical Gravitational Wave Background and the Cosmic Microwave Background

Since the first LIGO/Virgo detection, Gravitational Waves (GWs) have been very promising as a new complementary probe to understand our Universe. One of the next challenges of GW search is the detection and characterization of the Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background (SGWB), that is expected to open a window on the very early Universe (cosmological background) and to provide us new information on astrophysical source populations (astrophysical background). One way to characterize the SGWB and to extract information about its origin is through the cross-correlation with other cosmological probes. To this aim, in this paper, we explore the cross-correlation between the astrophysical background anisotropies and the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) ones. Such a signal is sensitive to primordial non-Gaussianity (nG) through the GW bias. Thus, we study the capability of next generation space-based interferometers to detect such a cross-correlation signal and to constrain primordial nG.

Circular Polarization of the Astrophysical Gravitational Wave Background.

The circular polarization of gravitational waves is a powerful observable to test parity violation in gravity and to distinguish between the primordial or the astrophysical origin of the stochastic background. This property comes from the expected unpolarized nature of the homogeneous and isotropic astrophysical background, contrary to some specific cosmological sources that can produce a polarized background. However, in this work we show that there is also a non-negligible amount of circular polarization in the astrophysical background, generated by Poisson fluctuations in the number of unresolved sources, which is present in the third-generation interferometers with signal-to-noise ratio larger than 2. We also explain in which cases the gravitational wave maps can be cleaned from this extra source of noise, exploiting the frequency and the angular dependence, in order to search for signals from the early Universe. Future studies about the detection of polarized cosmological backgrounds with ground- and space-based interferometers should account for the presence of such a foreground contribution.

The dipole of the astrophysical gravitational-wave background

One of the main pillars of the ΛCDM model is the Cosmological Principle, which states that our Universe is statistically isotropic and homogeneous on large scales. Here we test this hypothesis using the Astrophysical Gravitational Wave Background (AGWB) expected to be measured by the Einstein Telescope-Cosmic Explorer network; in particular we perform a numerical computation of the AGWB dipole, evaluating the intrinsic contribution due to clustering and the kinematic effect induced by the observer motion. We apply a component separation technique in the GW context to disentangle the kinematic dipole, the intrinsic dipole and the shot noise (SN), based on the observation of the AGWB at different frequencies. We show how this technique can also be implemented in matched-filtering to minimize the covariance which accounts for both instrumental noise and SN. Since GW detectors are essentially full-sky, we expect that this powerful tool can help in testing the isotropy of our Universe in the next future.

CLASS_GWB: robust modeling of the astrophysical gravitational wave background anisotropies

Gravitational radiation offers a unique possibility to study the large-scale structure of the Universe, gravitational wave sources and propagation in a completely novel way. Given that gravitational wave maps contain a wealth of astrophysical and cosmological information, interpreting this signal requires a non-trivial multidisciplinary approach. In this work we present the complete computation of the signal produced by compact object mergers accounting for a detailed modelling of the astrophysical sources and for cosmological perturbations. We develop the CLASS_GWB code, which allows for the computation of the anisotropies of the astrophysical gravitational wave background, accounting for source and detector properties, as well as effects of gravitational wave propagation. We apply our numerical tools to robustly compute the angular power spectrum of the anisotropies of the gravitational wave background generated by astrophysical sources in the LIGO-Virgo frequency band. The end-to-end theoretical framework we present can be easily applied to different sources and detectors in other frequency bands. Moreover, the same numerical tools can be used to compute the anisotropies of gravitational wave maps of the sky made using resolved events.

Testing the early universe with anisotropies of the gravitational wave background

In this work we analyse in detail the possibility of using small and intermediate-scale gravitational wave anisotropies to constrain the inflationary particle content. First, we develop a phenomenological approach focusing on anisotropies generated by primordial tensor-tensor-scalar and purely gravitational non-Gaussianities. We highlight the quantities that play a key role in determining the detectability of the signal. To amplify the power of anisotropies as a probe of early universe physics, we consider cross-correlations with CMB temperature anisotropies. We assess the size of the signal from inflationary interactions against so-called induced anisotropies. In order to arrive at realistic estimates, we obtain the projected constraints on the non-linear primordial parameter F NL for several upcoming gravitational wave probes in the presence of the astrophysical gravitational wave background. We further illustrate our findings by considering a concrete inflationary realisation and use it to underscore a few subtleties in the phenomenological analysis.

Probability distribution of astrophysical gravitational-wave background fluctuations

The coalescence of compact binary stars is expected to produce a stochastic background of gravitational waves (GW) observable with future GW detectors. Such backgrounds are usually characterized by their power spectrum as a function of frequency. Here, we present a method to calculate the full 1-point distribution of strain fluctuations. We focus on time series data, but our approach generalizes to the frequency domain. We illustrate how this probability distribution can be evaluated numerically. In addition, we derive accurate analytical asymptotic expressions for the large strain tail, which demonstrate that it is dominated by the nearest source. As an application, we calculate the distribution of strain fluctuations for the astrophysical GW background produced by binary mergers of compact stars in the Universe, and the distribution of the observed confusion background obtained upon subtracting bright, resolved sources from the signal. We quantify the extent to which they deviate from a Gaussian distribution. Our approach could be useful for the spectral shape reconstruction of stochastic GW backgrounds.

Cross-correlation of the astrophysical gravitational-wave background with galaxy clustering

We investigate the correlation between the distribution of galaxies and the predicted gravitational-wave background of astrophysical origin. We show that the large angular scale anisotropies of this background are dominated by nearby non-linear structure, which depends on the notoriously hard to model galaxy power spectrum at small scales. In contrast, we report that the cross-correlation of this signal with galaxy catalogues depends only on linear scales and can be used to constrain the average contribution to the gravitational-wave background as a function of time. Using mock data based on a simplified model, we explore the effects of galaxy bias, angular resolution and the matter abundance on these constraints. Our results suggest that, when combined with galaxy surveys, the gravitational-wave background can be a powerful probe for both gravitational-wave merger physics and cosmology.

Searching for modified gravity in the astrophysical gravitational wave background: Application to ground-based interferometers

We investigate how the propagation of an astrophysical gravitational wave background (AGWB) is modified over cosmological volumes when considering theories beyond general relativity of the type Horndeski gravity. We first deduce an amplitude correction on the AGWB induced for the presence of a possible running in the Planck mass. Then, we apply the spectral noise density from some ground-based interferometers, namely, the Advanced LIGO (aLIGO), Einstein Telescope (ET) and Cosmic Explore (CE), to evaluate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as a function of the amplitude of the running of the Planck mass for two different scenarios. We find that for observation time period $\gtrsim$ 5 yrs and $\gtrsim$ 1 yr, we can have a significant signal of the AGWB in the band [1-100] Hz from the ET and CE sensitivity, respectively. Using Fisher information, we find some forecast bounds, and we deduce $\lesssim$ 27\% and $\lesssim$ 18\% correction at 1$\sigma$ confidence level on the amplitude of the running of the Planck mass from ET and CE, respectively. It is clear that a detection of a AGWB in future can open a new window to probe the nature of gravity with good accuracy.

Detecting the anisotropic astrophysical gravitational wave background in the presence of shot noise through cross-correlations

The spatial and temporal discreteness of gravitational wave sources leads to shot noise that may, in some regimes, swamp any attempts at measuring the anisotropy of the gravitational wave background. Cross-correlating a gravitational wave background map with a sufficiently dense galaxy survey can alleviate this issue, and potentially recover some of the underlying properties of the gravitational wave background. We quantify the shot noise level and we explicitly show that cross-correlating the gravitational wave background and a galaxy catalog improves the chances of a first detection of the background anisotropy with a gravitational wave observatory operating in the frequency range (10Hz,100Hz), given sufficient sensitivity.

Unified view of anisotropies in the astrophysical gravitational-wave background

In the literature different approaches have been proposed to compute the anisotropies of the astrophysical gravitational wave background. The different expressions derived, although starting from our work Cusin, Pitrou, Uzan, Phys.Rev.D96, 103019 (2017) [1], seem to differ. This article compares the various theoretical expressions proposed so far and provides a separate derivation based on a Boltzmann approach. We show that all the theoretical formula in the literature are equivalent and boil down to the one of Ref. [1] when a proper matching of terms and integration by parts are performed. The difference between the various predictions presented for anisotropies in a cosmological context can only lie in the astrophysical modeling of sources, and neither in the theory nor in the cosmological description of the large scale structures. Finally we comment on the gauge invariance of expressions.

Shot noise in the astrophysical gravitational-wave background

We calculate the shot noise induced in the anisotropies of the astrophysical gravitational-wave background by finite sampling of both the galaxy distribution and the compact binary coalescence event rate. This leads to a white noise term in the angular power spectrum ${C}_{\ensuremath{\ell}}$, for which we derive a simple analytical expression. Failing to account for this term (as previous analyses have done) biases any measurement of the ${C}_{\ensuremath{\ell}}$'s. We find that the shot noise dominates over the true astrophysical power spectrum in any reasonable observing scenario, and that only with very long observing times and removal of a large number of foreground sources can the true power spectrum be recovered.

Properties of the stochastic astrophysical gravitational wave background: Astrophysical sources dependencies

This article explores the properties (amplitude and shape) of the angular power spectrum of the anisotropies of the astrophysical gravitational wave background (AGWB) focusing on the signatures of the astrophysical models describing subgalactic physics. It demonstrates that while some parameters have negligible impact, others, and in particular the stellar evolution models, the metallicity and the merger time delay distribution can result in relative differences of order 40% in the angular power spectrum of anisotropies in both the LIGO/Virgo and LISA frequency bands. It is also shown that the monopole and the anisotropic components of the AGWB are complementary and sensitive to different astrophysical parameters. It follows that AGWB anisotropies are a new observable with the potential to provide new astrophysical information that cannot be accessed otherwise.

Anisotropies in the Astrophysical Gravitational-Wave Background: The Impact of Black Hole Distributions.

We use population inference to explore the impact that uncertainties in the distribution of binary black holes (BBH) have on the astrophysical gravitational-wave background (AGWB). Our results show that the AGWB monopole is sensitive to the nature of the BBH population (particularly the local merger rate), while the anisotropic C_{ℓ} spectrum is only modified to within a few percent, at a level which is insignificant compared to other sources of uncertainty (such as cosmic variance). This is very promising news for future observational studies of the AGWB, as it shows that (i)the monopole can be used as a new probe of the population of compact objects throughout cosmic history, complementary to direct observations by LIGO and Virgo and (ii)we are able to make surprisingly robust predictions for the C_{ℓ} spectrum, even with only very approximate knowledge of the black hole population. As a result, the AGWB anisotropies have enormous potential as a new probe of the large-scale structure of the Universe, and of late-Universe cosmology in general.

Anisotropies in the astrophysical gravitational-wave background: Predictions for the detection of compact binaries by LIGO and Virgo

We develop a detailed anisotropic model for the astrophysical gravitational-wave background, including binary mergers of two stellar-mass black holes, two neutron stars, or one of each, which are expected to be the strongest contributions in the LIGO-Virgo frequency band. The angular spectrum of the anisotropies, quantified by the $C_\ell$ components, is calculated using two complementary approaches: (i) a simple, closed-form analytical expression, and (ii) a detailed numerical study using an all-sky mock light cone galaxy catalogue from the Millennium simulation. The two approaches are in excellent agreement at large angular scales, and differ by a factor of order unity at smaller scales. These anisotropies are considerably larger in amplitude than e.g. those in the temperature of the cosmic microwave background, confirming that it is important to model these anisotropies, and indicating that this is a promising avenue for future theoretical and observational work.

First Predictions of the Angular Power Spectrum of the Astrophysical Gravitational Wave Background.

We present the first predictions for the angular power spectrum of the astrophysical gravitational wave background constituted of the radiation emitted by all resolved and unresolved astrophysical sources. Its shape and amplitude depend on both the astrophysical properties on galactic scales and on cosmological properties. We show that the angular power spectrum behaves as C_{ℓ}∝1/ℓ on large scales and that relative fluctuations of the signal are of order 30% at 100Hz. We also present the correlations of the astrophysical gravitational wave background with weak lensing and galaxy distribution. These numerical results pave the way to the study of a new observable at the crossroad between general relativity, astrophysics, and cosmology.

Anisotropy of the astrophysical gravitational wave background: Analytic expression of the angular power spectrum and correlation with cosmological observations

Unresolved and resolved sources of gravitational waves are at the origin of a stochastic gravitational wave background. While the computation of its mean density as a function of frequency in a homogeneous and isotropic universe is standard lore, the computation of its anisotropies requires to understand the coarse graining from local systems, to galactic scales and then to cosmology. An expression of the gravitational wave energy density valid in any general spacetime is derived. It is then specialized to a perturbed Friedmann-Lema\^itre spacetime in order to determine the angular power spectrum of this stochastic background as well as its correlation with other cosmological probes, such as the galaxy number counts and weak lensing. Our result for the angular power spectrum also provides an expression for the variance of the gravitational wave background.

Mock data and science challenge for detecting an astrophysical stochastic gravitational-wave background with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo

The purpose of this mock data and science challenge is to prepare the data analysis and science interpretation for the second generation of gravitational-wave experiments Advanced LIGO-Virgo in the search for a stochastic gravitational-wave background signal of astrophysical origin. Here we present a series of signal and data challenges, with increasing complexity, whose aim is to test the ability of current data analysis pipelines at detecting an astrophysically produced gravitational-wave background, test parameter estimation methods and interpret the results. We introduce the production of these mock data sets that includes a realistic observing scenario data set where we account for different sensitivities of the advanced detectors as they are continuously upgraded toward their design sensitivity. After analysing these with the standard isotropic cross-correlation pipeline we find that we are able to recover the injected gravitational-wave background energy density to within $2\sigma$ for all of the data sets and present the results from the parameter estimation. The results from this mock data and science challenge show that advanced LIGO and Virgo will be ready and able to make a detection of an astrophysical gravitational-wave background within a few years of operations of the advanced detectors, given a high enough rate of compact binary coalescing events.
