Assessing asthma self-management education among US children with current asthma, Asthma Call-back Survey (ACBS) 2015–2017

Objective Asthma self-management education (AS-ME) is an effective strategy to help children with asthma achieve better asthma control and outcome. The objective of this study is to assess the association between the prevalence of receiving AS-ME curriculum components and sociodemographic characteristics among children with current asthma. Methods Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, child Asthma Call-back Survey 2015–2017 aggregated data were used. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to assess associations of each AS-ME component question and sociodemographic characteristic, adjusting for sample weighting. Results Among 3,213 children with current asthma, 52% of children reported ever being given an asthma action plan by a doctor or other healthcare professional. After adjusting for other variables, boys and Non-Hispanic Black children were more likely to report being given an action plan (APR= 1.15[95% CI 1.00–1.32] and APR= 1.28[95% CI 1.07–1.54] respectively). Non-Hispanic Black (APR = 2.15 [95% CI 1.30–3.55]), non-Hispanic, other race (APR = 1.95 [95% CI1.04–3.66]), and Hispanic children (APR = 1.84 [95% CI 1.18–2.89]) were more likely to report taking a course to learn how to manage asthma than non-Hispanic White children. Hispanic children (40.8%) were more likely to report being advised to change home environment compared to non-Hispanic Whites (31.5%) (APR =1.28 [95% CI 1.01–1.63). Conclusion The prevalence of some elements of asthma-self management education was relatively low and there were differences observed in the prevalence of receiving AS-ME by race/ethnicity, parental education, and income. Targeted implementation of asthma self-management components and interventions may improve asthma control and reduce asthma morbidity.

Developments in respiratory self-management interventions over the last two decades.

This paper describes developments in the fields of asthma and COPD self-management interventions (SMIs) over the last two decades and discusses future directions. Evidence around SMIs has exponentially grown. Efficacy on group level is convincing and both asthma and COPD SMIs are currently recommended by respiratory guidelines. Core components of asthma SMIs are defined as education, action plans, and regular review, with some discussion about self-monitoring. Exacerbation action plans are defined as an integral part of COPD management. Patient's adherence to SMI's is however inadequate and significantly reducing the intervention's impact. Adherence could be improved by tailoring of SMIs to patients' needs, health beliefs, and capabilities; the use of shared decision making; and optimising the communication between patients and health care providers. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, digital health innovations have rapidly been introduced and expanded. Digital technology use may increase efficiency, flexibility, and efficacy of SMIs. Furthermore, artificial intelligence can be used to e.g., predict exacerbations in action plans. Research around digital health innovations to ensure evidence-based practice is of utmost importance. Current implementation of respiratory SMIs is not satisfactory. Implementation research should be used to generate further insights, with cost-effectiveness, policy (makers), and funding being significant determinants.

Development and Pilot Randomized Trial of a Coping Skills Intervention for Low-SES Latinx Families of Children with Asthma.

Psychosocial stress contributes to asthma disparities for low-SES Latinx children, but primary and secondary control coping by children and parents is associated with better psychosocial and asthma outcomes. Therefore, we developed and pilot tested Adapt 2 Asthma (A2A), a family-based coping and asthma self-management intervention for low-SES Latinx families. Children, parents, and primary care providers (N=16) participated in five focus groups to refine A2A's content and delivery. Subsequently, families of children ages 9-12 with asthma (N=24) were recruited from primary care clinics and randomly assigned to receive A2A or enhanced usual care (EUC). Based on focus groups, A2A was refined to address feasibility, Latinx-specific cultural factors, and provider-family gaps. Results of the pilot RCT showed that 92% of families completed all sessions of A2A, and there were high levels of satisfaction with and fidelity to A2A. There were no statistically significant differences between the A2A and EUC groups at 3-month follow-up, although there were small, non-significant effects favoring A2A on parent-reported asthma control, parent secondary control coping, and emergency department visits. We found evidence of acceptability, feasibility, and potential benefits of A2A for low-SES Latinx families. Findings provide guidance for future implementation in primary care.

School-based self-management intervention using theatre to improve asthma control in adolescents: a pilot cluster-randomised controlled trial

BackgroundChildren with poorly controlled asthma have higher rates of unplanned healthcare use and school absences, as well as lower rates of medication adherence and knowledge. They also feel less comfortable using their medication at school, due to social fears and bullying. In this study, this was addressed through two school-based self-management interventions piloted to determine which one to use in a full trial.MethodsWe sought to assess the feasibility and acceptability of two school-based self-management intervention aimed at improving asthma control. Schools in London were randomised to (i) a theatre workshop for the whole year group aimed at raising awareness of asthma in schools, followed by self-management workshops for children (full intervention), (ii) theatre workshop alone (theatre only), or (iii) usual care (controls). Opt-out consent was obtained from parents. The study was a cluster randomised pilot trial, using London schools as the unit of allocation. Our primary aim was to assess the feasibility of delivering a self-management intervention in schools aimed at improving the asthma control test (ACT) score at 6 months. Secondary outcomes included acceptability of the school-based interventions, suitability of the theatre intervention and the full intervention with the self-management workshops, and generation of randomised data to inform future power calculations. Data were analysed by generalised mixed-effect models.ResultsThe recruitment strategy for this trial was effective. Five schools were randomised to full intervention (189 children), four to theatre only (103 children), and six to controls (83 children). Asthma control test (ACT) score at baseline and 6 months was obtained from 178/358 participating children. Compared with the controls, there were no large differences found in ACT score with the full intervention; knowledge and perception of asthma improved though. GP and hospital visits increased in the full intervention group. Compared with controls, ACT score was unchanged in the theatre only group.ConclusionThe asthma self-management intervention trial in schools is feasible and acceptable. The full intervention consisting of both theatre and self-management workshop for asthmatics tended to be better suited to improve outcomes than the theatre intervention on its own. This full intervention should be the one carried forward into a main trial if funding for further research was sought. Further work is needed to understand why there was evidence that unscheduled visits to healthcare professionals increased with the full intervention.Trial registrationThe study was registered on the clinical trials database on 14th May 2018 (ID NCT03536416).

Isn't There an App for That? The Role of Smartphone and Tablet Applications for Asthma Education and Self-Management in Adolescents.

Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide, with a substantial proportion of the asthma population being children and adolescents. Self-management is recognized as a key component to asthma management, with multiple international guidelines emphasizing the need for adequate self-management skills for good asthma control. Unfortunately, the uptake amongst young people and adolescents is low, with often suboptimal engagement to self-management education and skills contributing to poor adherence to medication as well as poor perception of asthma symptoms. Innovative solutions to deliver education and self-management to adolescents are clearly needed. mHealth is the use of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet devices to improve healthcare and has been used in multiple chronic diseases. This review articles explores the current use of mHealth in asthma, specifically smartphone and tablet applications as a generation-appropriate, accessible delivery modality for provision of asthma education and self-management interventions in adolescents. Current evidence gaps are also highlighted, which should be addressed in future research.

Developing an Asthma Self-management Intervention Through a Web-Based Design Workshop for People With Limited Health Literacy: User-Centered Design Approach.

BackgroundTechnology, including mobile apps, has the potential to support self-management of long-term conditions and can be tailored to enhance adoption. We developed an app to support asthma self-management among people with limited health literacy in a web-based workshop (to ensure physical distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic).ObjectiveThe aim of this study is to develop and test a prototype asthma self-management mobile app tailored to the needs of people with limited health literacy through a web-based workshop.MethodsWe recruited participants from a primary care center in Malaysia. We adapted a design sprint methodology to a web-based workshop in five stages over 1 week. Patients with asthma and limited health literacy provided insights into real-life self-management issues in stage 1, which informed mobile app development in stages 2-4. We recruited additional patients to test the prototype in stage 5 using a qualitative research design. Participants gave feedback through a concurrent thinking-aloud process moderated by a researcher. Each interview lasted approximately 1 hour. Screen recordings of app browsing activities were performed. Interviews were audio-recorded and analyzed using a thematic approach to identify utility and usability issues.ResultsThe stakeholder discussion identified four themes: individual, family, friends, and society and system levels. Five patients tested the prototype. Participants described 4 ways in which the app influenced or supported self-management (utility): offering information, providing access to an asthma action plan, motivating control of asthma through support for medication adherence, and supporting behavior change through a reward system. Specific usability issues addressed navigation, comprehension, and layout.ConclusionsThis study proved that it was possible to adapt the design sprint workshop to a web-based format with the added advantage that it allowed the development and the testing process to be done efficiently through various programs. The resultant app incorporated advice from stakeholders, including sources for information about asthma, medication and appointment reminders, accessible asthma action plans, and sources for social support. The app is now ready to move to feasibility testing.

Using Mobile Health to Improve Asthma Self-Management in Early Adolescence: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

PurposeEarly adolescence is an important developmental period where youth take primary responsibility for asthma self-management. Helpful caregiver support during this time is pivotal in determining whether early adolescents successfully develop asthma self-management behaviors. AIM2ACT is a dyadic mobile health intervention designed to increase helpful caregiver support as early adolescents engage in asthma self-management behaviors. We conducted a pilot randomized controlled trial to determine the feasibility and acceptability of AIM2ACT and conduct preliminary tests of efficacy. MethodsWe randomized adolescents (12–15 years old) and a caregiver to receive AIM2ACT (n = 17) or a self-guided attention control condition (n = 16) for 20 weeks. We conducted assessment visits at baseline, postintervention, and 4-month follow-up. Outcomes included family asthma management (primary outcome), adolescent asthma control, lung function (forced expiratory volume in 1 second), asthma-related quality of life, asthma management self-efficacy, and family communication. ResultsWe randomized 33 dyads and had 100% retention in the trial among AIM2ACT participants. Dyads frequently engaged with AIM2ACT (M = 21 days for adolescents, 32.65 days for caregivers) and reported very high satisfaction with content, functionality, and helpfulness. Participants randomized to AIM2ACT had significant improvements in asthma control scores (p = .04) compared to control that surpassed the minimally clinically important difference threshold. Although not statistically significant, the magnitude of improvements in family asthma management, asthma-related quality of life, and family communication was larger in the AIM2ACT group. ConclusionsAIM2ACT is a feasible and acceptable dyadic mobile health asthma self-management intervention that improves asthma control.

Developing theory-based asthma self-management interventions for South Asians and African Americans: A systematic review.

Intervention development guidelines suggest that behavioural interventions benefit from being theory-based. Minority populations typically benefit less from asthma self-management interventions, and the extent to which appropriate theory has been used for culturally tailored interventions has not been addressed. We aimed to determine theory use and theoretical domains targeted in asthma self-management interventions for South Asian and Black populations. We systematically searched electronic databases, research registers, manually searched relevant journals and reference lists of reviews for randomised controlled trials of asthma self-management for South Asian and Black populations, and extracted data using the Theory Coding Schemeto inform if/how theory was used and explore its associations with asthma outcomes, and the Theoretical Domains Framework was used to identify targeted theoretical domains and its relationship to effectiveness of asthma outcomes. 20 papers (19 trials) were identified; theory was not extensively used in interventions. It was unclear whether theory use or theoretical domains targeted in interventions improved asthma outcomes. South Asian interventions included 'behavioural regulation', while 'reinforcement' was mostly used in African American interventions. 'Knowledge' was central for all populations, though there were differences related to 'environmental context and resources' e.g., language adaptations for South Asians; asthma resources provided for African Americans. Author descriptions of interventions targeting providers were limited. There was little evidence of theory-based approaches used in cultural interventions for asthma self-management. Demystifying theoretical concepts (and cultural interpretations of constructs) may provide clarity for 'non-experts', enabling mainstream use of theory-driven approaches in intervention development.

Using a Systems Engineering Approach to Design an Interactive Mobile Health Application for Improving Asthma Self-management.

Mobile health applications are in demand. According to the Grand Review Research group, there were US $12.4 billion in mobile health app sales in 2018. Increasingly, providers are seeking new ways to engage their pediatric patients. One approach is through mobile health apps. Nearly 10 000 mobile health apps target youth and teens, especially for children with conditions that require complex treatment and self-management. One such chronic illness is asthma. Children with asthma who lack social support are particularly vulnerable to exacerbations because they often are not focused on self-care. For this reason, successful asthma programs for children engage family members, encouraging them to play an active role on the healthcare team. The Just-in-Time Asthma Self-management Intervention is unique in several ways compared to other asthma management mobile applications. The app uses gold standard, evidence-based asthma care practices and extends the support infrastructure beyond family and healthcare providers to engage the child, their peers, and school personnel. Further, the app was built using a systems engineering approach. This article reviews the basis for developing an asthma care mobile application including the conceptual framework supporting a systems model, how the Just-in-Time Asthma Self-management Intervention is unique, and how it was built using a systems engineering design.

A systematic review of interventions addressing limited health literacy to improve asthma self-management.

BackgroundSupported asthma self-management improves health outcomes. However, people with limited health literacy, especially in lower-middle-income countries (LMICs), may need tailored interventions to enable them to realise the benefits. We aimed to assess the clinical effectiveness of asthma self-management interventions targeted at people with limited health literacy and to identify strategies associated with effective programmes.MethodsFollowing Cochrane methodology, we searched ten databases (January 1990 – June 2018; updated October 2019), without language restriction. We included controlled experimental studies whose interventions targeted health literacy to improve asthma self-management. Selection of papers, extraction of data and quality assessment were done independently by two reviewers. The primary outcomes were clinical (asthma control) and implementation (adoption/adherence to intervention). Analysis was narrative.ResultsWe screened 4318 titles and abstracts, reviewed 52 full-texts and included five trials. One trial was conducted in a LMIC. Risk of bias was low in one trial and high in the other four studies. Clinical outcomes were reported in two trials, both at high risk of bias: one of which reported a reduction in unscheduled care (number of visits in 6-month (SD); Intervention:0.9 (1.2) vs Control:1.8 (2.4), P = 0.001); the other showed no effect. None reported uptake or adherence to the intervention. Behavioural change strategies typically focused on improving an individual’s psychological and physical capacity to enact behaviour (eg, targeting asthma-related knowledge or comprehension). Only two interventions also targeted motivation; none sought to improve opportunity. Less than half of the interventions used specific self-management strategies (eg, written asthma action plan) with tailoring to limited health literacy status. Different approaches (eg, video-based and pictorial action plans) were used to provide education.ConclusionsThe paucity of studies and diversity of the interventions to support people with limited health literacy to self-manage their asthma meant that the impact on health outcomes remains unclear. Given the proportion of the global population who have limited health literacy skills, this is a research priority.Protocol registrationPROSPERO CRD 42018118974

A behavioral intervention can decrease asthma exacerbations in older adults

BackgroundOlder adults have higher rates of asthma morbidity and mortality compared with younger age groups. Few interventions are tailored to this population. ObjectiveTo evaluate a self-management asthma intervention in older adults. MethodsAdults age 55 and older with persistent asthma were enrolled into blinded, randomized controlled trial of a 6-session asthma self-management intervention. This educational intervention was conducted in group sessions and through individual telephone calls. Outcomes including asthma exacerbations (defined as unscheduled office visits, emergency department visits, or hospitalizations for asthma), spirometric values, FeNO, asthma control, asthma quality of life, and asthma self-management were assessed at 3, 6, and 12 months. ResultsOne hundred eighty-nine subjects were enrolled, 172 were randomized and received at least 1 treatment dose, and 145 (84%) were analyzed at 12 months. On a modified intent-to-treat analysis, those in the intervention group were less likely to have an asthma exacerbation (26.9% vs 47.1%, P = .01), had a lower asthma exacerbation rate (0.8 vs 1.9, P = .02), had better asthma control (19.9 vs 18.6, P = .08), and had a higher asthma self-management score (8.9 vs 8.4, P = .03). After a mixed-model analysis to control for confounding factors, a decrease in asthma exacerbations (P = .02), as well as a decreased asthma exacerbation rate (P = .04), remained statistically significant, whereas asthma control and self-management did not. No other significant outcome differences were found. ConclusionA 6-session asthma self-management intervention can successfully decrease asthma exacerbations among older adults.

Theory-Based Digital Interventions to Improve Asthma Self-Management Outcomes: Systematic Review.

BackgroundAsthma is a chronic disease requiring effective self-management to control it and prevent mortality. The use of theory-informed digital interventions promoting asthma self-management is increasing. However, there is limited knowledge concerning how and to what extent psychological theory has been applied to the development of digital interventions, or how using theory impacts outcomes.ObjectiveThe study aimed to examine the use and application of theory in the development of digital interventions to enhance asthma self-management and to evaluate the effectiveness of theory-based interventions in improving adherence, self-management, and clinical outcomes.MethodsElectronic databases (CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsycINFO) were searched systematically using predetermined terms. Additional studies were identified by scanning references within relevant studies. Two researchers screened titles and abstracts against predefined inclusion criteria; a third resolved discrepancies. Full-text review was undertaken for relevant studies. Those meeting inclusion criteria were assessed for risk of bias using the Cochrane Collaboration tool. The review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. Study outcomes were classified as medication adherence, self-management, asthma control, clinical markers of health, quality of life, other quality of life outcomes, and health care utilization. Effectiveness was calculated as an average outcome score based on the study’s reported significance. The Theory Coding Scheme (TCS) was used to establish the extent to which each intervention had applied theory and which theoretical constructs or behavioral determinants were addressed. Associations between TCS scores and asthma outcomes were described within a narrative synthesis.ResultsFourteen studies evaluating 14 different digital interventions were included in this review. The most commonly cited theories were Social Cognitive Theory, Health Belief Model, and Self-Efficacy Theory. A greater use of theory in the development of interventions was correlated with effective outcomes (r=.657; P=.01): only the 3 studies that met >60% of the different uses of theory assessed by the TCS were effective on all behavioral and clinical outcomes measured. None of the 11 studies that met ≤60% of the TCS criteria were fully effective; however, 3 interventions were partially effective (ie, the intervention had a significant impact on some, but not all, of the outcomes measured). Most studies lacked detail on the theoretical constructs and how they were applied to the development and application of the intervention.ConclusionsThese findings suggest that greater use of theory in the development and application of digital self-management interventions for asthma may increase their effectiveness. The application of theory alone may not be enough to yield a successful intervention, and other factors (eg, the context in which the intervention is used) should be considered. A systematic approach to the use of theory to guide the design, selection, and application of intervention techniques is needed.

Recruitment and retention strategies for an urban adolescent study: Lessons learned from a multi-center study of community-based asthma self-management intervention for adolescents

Intervention studies with urban adolescents and families affected by asthma are critical to improving the disproportionate morbidity in this population. Community-based recruitment and retention strategies in a multi-site longitudinal project evaluating an asthma self-management intervention for adolescents are presented. Successful recruitment strategies depended on the geographic and cultural characteristics of each study site. Partnering with providers and groups known to the target population and in-person contact with target population were found effective. Flexibility accommodating modified and new approaches, securing multiple contacts and repeating mailings as well as capitalizing on the benefits of subject payment was critical to achieving long-term subject engagement of 85% in the study. Ongoing monitoring and adjustment of recruitment and retention strategies is recommended.

Mobile GIS-based monitoring asthma attacks based on environmental factors

Abstract Asthma is a chronic disease of the airways, and approximately three million people around the world are suffering from this disease. It can become a serious problem for the public health if it is not controlled. Specialists consider vital upgrading self-managing plans to control this disease. The main component of these programs is to control asthma attacks. The attacks are affected by different variables including the environmental factors such as air pollutants and meteorological factors. In this article, we attempted to develop a tool to make the patients aware potentially dangerous areas and places in terms of asthma attacks and help them in better control of the disease by providing daily monitoring maps of asthma attacks based on environmental factors. On the other hand, development of the information technology tools and penetration of mobile health tools have changed fundamentally the design of asthma self-management interventions by removing the spatial and temporal restrictions. The tool that is available for the patient in any time and place can make the patient be aware of potential risks. The purpose of this article is to develop a Mobile GIS 2 -based tool containing maps of monitoring asthma attacks based on environmental and local factors that will be generated using predictive algorithms. In fact, by developing this tool with an innovative and interdisciplinary approach, continuous self-management of asthma can be implemented more efficiently.

The Potential of Mobile Apps for Improving Asthma Self-Management: A Review of Publicly Available and Well-Adopted Asthma Apps.

BackgroundEffective disease self-management lowers asthma’s burden of disease for both individual patients and health care systems. In principle, mobile health (mHealth) apps could enable effective asthma self-management interventions that improve a patient’s quality of life while simultaneously reducing the overall treatment costs for health care systems. However, prior reviews in this field have found that mHealth apps for asthma lack clinical evaluation and are often not based on medical guidelines. Yet, beyond the missing evidence for clinical efficacy, little is known about the potential apps might have for improving asthma self-management.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to assess the potential of publicly available and well-adopted mHealth apps for improving asthma self-management.MethodsThe Apple App store and Google Play store were systematically searched for asthma apps. In total, 523 apps were identified, of which 38 apps matched the selection criteria to be included in the review. Four requirements of app potential were investigated: app functions, potential to change behavior (by means of a behavior change technique taxonomy), potential to promote app use (by means of a gamification components taxonomy), and app quality (by means of the Mobile Application Rating Scale [MARS]).ResultsThe most commonly implemented functions in the 38 reviewed asthma apps were tracking (30/38, 79%) and information (26/38, 68%) functions, followed by assessment (20/38, 53%) and notification (18/38, 47%) functions. On average, the reviewed apps applied 7.12 of 26 available behavior change techniques (standard deviation [SD]=4.46) and 4.89 of 31 available gamification components (SD=4.21). Average app quality was acceptable (mean=3.17/5, SD=0.58), whereas subjective app quality lied between poor and acceptable (mean=2.65/5, SD=0.87). Additionally, the sum scores of all review frameworks were significantly correlated (lowest correlation: r36=.33, P=.04 between number of functions and gamification components; highest correlation: r36=.80, P<.001 between number of behavior change techniques and gamification components), which suggests that an app’s potential tends to be consistent across review frameworks.ConclusionsSeveral apps were identified that performed consistently well across all applied review frameworks, thus indicating the potential mHealth apps offer for improving asthma self-management. However, many apps suffer from low quality. Therefore, app reviews should be considered as a decision support tool before deciding which app to integrate into a patient’s asthma self-management. Furthermore, several research-practice gaps were identified that app developers should consider addressing in future asthma apps.

Impact of Goal Setting and Goal Attainment Methods on Asthma Outcomes

Optimal use of goal-setting strategies in self-management efforts with high-risk individuals with asthma is not well understood. This study aimed to describe factors associated with goal attainment in an asthma self-management intervention for African American women with asthma and determine whether goal attainment methods proved beneficial to goal achievement and improved asthma outcomes. Data came from 212 African American women in the intervention arm of a randomized clinical trial evaluating a telephone-based asthma self-management program. Telephone interview data were collected to assess goals and goal attainment methods identified, asthma symptoms, asthma control, and asthma-related quality of life at baseline and 2-year follow-up. Generalized estimating equations were used to assess the long-term impact of goal setting and goal attainment methods on outcomes. The average age of the sample was 42.1 years ( SD = 14.8). Factors associated with goal attainment included higher education ( p < .01) and fewer depressive symptoms ( p < .01). Using a goal attainment method also resulted in more goals being achieved over the course of the intervention (Estimate [ SE] = 1.25 [0.18]; p < .001) when adjusted for clinical and demographic factors. Use of and types of goal attainment methods and goals were not found to significantly affect asthma control, quality of life, or frequency of nighttime asthma symptoms at follow-up. Using a method to achieve goals led to greater goal attainment. Goal attainment alone did not translate into improved asthma outcomes in our study sample. Further studies are warranted to assess the challenges of self-management in chronic disease patients with complex health needs and how goal setting and goal attainment methods can be strategically integrated into self-management efforts to improve health endpoints.

An Electronic Asthma Self-Management Intervention for Young African American Adults

Health disparities are seen in many chronic conditions including asthma. Young African American adults represent a population at high risk for poor asthma outcomes due to both their minority status and the difficult transition from adolescence to adulthood. Recruitment and retention has been challenging in this demographic stratum, and traditional asthma education is often not feasible. The objective of this study was to develop and assess the feasibility of an electronic asthma self-management program for young African American adults. A total of 44 African American adults (age 18-30 years) with uncontrolled persistent asthma were enrolled in an asthma self-management program. The 6-week Breathe Michigan program (predicated on the social cognitive theory) was tailored specifically to the concerns and preferences of young African American adults. The entire program was completed electronically, without any specialized human support. At 2 weeks and 3 months after program completion, participants were contacted for follow-up. A total of 89% of enrolled subjects completed the 6-week intervention, and 77% were available for evaluation at 3 months. All subjects completing the 2-week postprogram survey reported that the program was helpful, and 97% would recommend it to others. Asthma control as measured by the Asthma Control Test improved from 16.1 to 19.3 (P < .01), and asthma quality of life as measured by the Mini Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire improved from 4.0 to 5.1 (P < .01). The Breathe Michigan program is feasible for recruitment and retention, and demonstrated an improvement in asthma control and quality of life for young African American adults.
