Asthma Control and Associated Factors Among Children with Current Asthma - Findings from the 2019 Child Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System - Asthma Call-Back Survey.

This study aimed to determine the prevalence and correlates of uncontrolled asthma among children with current asthma in four US states. We also determined the rates and correlates of asthma-related hospitalization, urgent care center (UCC), or emergency department (ED) visits. We analyzed the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) Asthma Call-back Survey (ACBS) datasets. Asthma control status was classified as well-controlled or uncontrolled asthma based on day- and night-time asthma symptoms, activity limitation or use of rescue medications. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify the correlates of uncontrolled asthma and asthma-related hospitalization or UCC/ED visits. Among 249 children with current asthma, 55.1% had uncontrolled asthma while 40% reported asthma-related hospitalization or UCC/ED visits in the past year. Non-Hispanic ethnicity, ages of 0-9 and 15-17 years, household income <$25,000, and not having a flu vaccination had higher odds of uncontrolled asthma. Conversely, asthma self-management education and households with two children compared to one were positively associated with uncontrolled asthma. For healthcare utilization, male and non-Hispanic children, along with those from households earning <$25,000 exhibited higher odds of asthma-related hospitalization and UCC/ED visits. Uncontrolled asthma and asthma-related visits to UCC/ED and hospitalization are common among children with current asthma. These outcomes are influenced by low household income and male sex, among other factors which call for multi-faceted interventions by healthcare providers and policymakers. Targeted strategies to effectively manage asthma and reduce the need for emergency healthcare services are recommended.

EFFECTIVENESS OF ASTHMA SELF-MANAGEMENT EDUCATION (ASME) ON IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Background: Asthma is a common chronic respiratory disease that affects around 300 million people of all ages worldwide so that it has an impact on patients both physically, activity restrictions, and psychosocially, in terms of quality of life.&#x0D; Objective: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of Asthma Self Management Education (ASME) to improve the quality of life of people with asthma.&#x0D; Design: The design of this study uses a literature review.&#x0D; Data Sources: Initial searches of journal articles were performed on the Pubmed, Science Direct, and Google Schollar search databases from 2017-2021 with the keyword Asthma self management education. The ASME study found 807 articles but only 7 journal articles that met the search inclusion criteria.&#x0D; Review Methods: A literature review procedures were used to collect library data, reading and taking notes, as well as critical assessment of managing research materials&#x0D; Results: According to the results of the literature review, ASME has several variants with an average duration of ASME being carried out for 6 months to 15 months. Asthma control is measured to assess lung function and behavioral changes in individuals with asthma. The ASME technique is effective as an educational method in improving lung function, asthma control, quality of life, and behavior change which are important components of asthma sufferers.&#x0D; Conclusion: The application of ASME technical interventions to asthma sufferers can be used as an educational program to improve behavior changes that can control asthma symptoms non-pharmacologically

Using Randomized Controlled Trials to Estimate the Effect of Community Interventions for Childhood Asthma.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Controlling Childhood Asthma and Reducing Emergencies initiative aims to prevent 500,000 emergency department (ED) visits and hospitalizations within 5 years among children with asthma through implementation of evidence-based interventions and policies. Methods are needed for calculating the anticipated effects of planned asthma programs and the estimated effects of existing asthma programs. We describe and illustrate a method of using results from randomized control trials (RCTs) to estimate changes in rates of adverse asthma events (AAEs) that result from expanding access to asthma interventions. We use counterfactual arguments to justify a formula for the expected number of AAEs prevented by a given intervention. This formula employs a current rate of AAEs, a measure of the increase in access to the intervention, and the rate ratio estimated in an RCT. We justified a formula for estimating the effect of expanding access to asthma interventions. For example, if 20% of patients with asthma in a community with 20,540 annual asthma-related ED visits were offered asthma self-management education, ED visits would decrease by an estimated 1,643; and annual hospitalizations would decrease from 2,639 to 617. Our method draws on the best available evidence from RCTs to estimate effects on rates of AAEs in the community of interest that result from expanding access to asthma interventions.

THE EFFECTS OF SELF-MANAGEMENT EDUCATION ON PATIENT OUTCOMES: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Background: Self-management programs have been reported to help patients manage symptoms for chronic diseases such as asthma. Asthma self-management education combining with behavior therapy is considered to be more effective.&#x0D; Objective: The purpose of this review was to identify of current published literature on asthma self management programs to astablished self management strategies.&#x0D; Design: This research type was literature review. Article as reference searched in google scholar with key word “self management” and “asthma” and science direct engine with key word; “asthma” and “self management”; and also with “asthma” and “self management and “behaviour” in science direct. Inclusion criteria are quantitative research in journal or scientific work about asthma self management education as independent variable. Exclusion criteria were literature article.&#x0D; Data Sources (include search dates): Google Scholar and Science Direct are data based used to explore the article on May 2022.&#x0D; Review Methods: PECOT/PICOT framework P(patient/problem): Asthma; E/I(exposure/implementation): Asthma self-management education; C(control): routine care; O(outcome): patient outcome.&#x0D; Results: limitation search are years, and population. Seventeen articles are found 13 of them are second sources. Four articles was explain there was an effect of self management education on patient outcomes: self efficacy, knowledge, and quality of life.&#x0D; Conclusion: Asthma self management education was effective to increase patient outcome: asthma knowledge, the quality of asthma control, self efficacy, and quality of life.

Assessing asthma self-management education among US children with current asthma, Asthma Call-back Survey (ACBS) 2015–2017

Objective Asthma self-management education (AS-ME) is an effective strategy to help children with asthma achieve better asthma control and outcome. The objective of this study is to assess the association between the prevalence of receiving AS-ME curriculum components and sociodemographic characteristics among children with current asthma. Methods Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, child Asthma Call-back Survey 2015–2017 aggregated data were used. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to assess associations of each AS-ME component question and sociodemographic characteristic, adjusting for sample weighting. Results Among 3,213 children with current asthma, 52% of children reported ever being given an asthma action plan by a doctor or other healthcare professional. After adjusting for other variables, boys and Non-Hispanic Black children were more likely to report being given an action plan (APR= 1.15[95% CI 1.00–1.32] and APR= 1.28[95% CI 1.07–1.54] respectively). Non-Hispanic Black (APR = 2.15 [95% CI 1.30–3.55]), non-Hispanic, other race (APR = 1.95 [95% CI1.04–3.66]), and Hispanic children (APR = 1.84 [95% CI 1.18–2.89]) were more likely to report taking a course to learn how to manage asthma than non-Hispanic White children. Hispanic children (40.8%) were more likely to report being advised to change home environment compared to non-Hispanic Whites (31.5%) (APR =1.28 [95% CI 1.01–1.63). Conclusion The prevalence of some elements of asthma-self management education was relatively low and there were differences observed in the prevalence of receiving AS-ME by race/ethnicity, parental education, and income. Targeted implementation of asthma self-management components and interventions may improve asthma control and reduce asthma morbidity.

Optimizing pediatric asthma education using virtual platforms during the COVID-19 pandemic

BackgroundWe compared patient and caregiver knowledge and confidence for managing asthma, and participant experiences when comprehensive asthma education was delivered in person versus in the virtual setting.MethodsWe performed a multi-methods study using structured surveys and qualitative interviews to solicit feedback from patients and caregivers following participation in a comprehensive asthma education session between April 2018 and October 2021. We compared participant knowledge and confidence for managing asthma as well as user experience when the education was attended in-person or virtually. Quantitative responses were summarized descriptively, and qualitative feedback was analyzed for major themes.ResultsOf 100 caregivers/patients who completed post education satisfaction surveys and interviews, 52 attended in person and 48 virtually, with the mean age of patients being 6.7 years (range: 1.2–17.0). Participant reported gains in knowledge and confidence for asthma management were not different between groups and 65.2% preferred attending virtual asthma education. The majority of participants described virtual education as a safer modality that was more convenient and accessible.ConclusionsWe demonstrated the successful implementation of a novel, virtual asthma education program for patients and caregivers of children with asthma. Both virtual and in-person delivered asthma education were equally effective for improving perceived knowledge and confidence for asthma self-management and virtual education was considered safer, more convenient and accessible. Virtual asthma education offers an attractive and effective option for improving the reach of quality asthma education programs and may allow more children/patients to benefit.

Long-term Effectiveness of a Peer-Led Asthma Self-management Program on Asthma Outcomes in Adolescents Living in Urban Areas

Long-term effectiveness of a peer-led asthma self-management program in improving asthma outcomes in adolescents living in urban areas has not been established.To determine the long-term effects of a peer-led program on asthma control, quality of life, and asthma management among predominantly racial and ethnic minority adolescents living in urban areas.A parallel-group, randomized clinical trial was conducted in 2015 to 2019 in 3 metropolitan cities in the US: Buffalo, New York; Baltimore, Maryland; and Memphis, Tennessee. Adolescents aged 12 to 17 years old with persistent asthma were recruited mainly through clinical practices and schools. Participants were followed-up for 15 months after the intervention. Double-blinding was achieved for baseline. Data analysis was performed from June 2019 to June 2020.The intervention group received a peer-led asthma self-management program; the control group received the identical program led by adult health care professionals. Peer leaders made follow-up contacts every other month for 12 months.The primary outcome was quality of life measured by the Pediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire, which consists of 3 subscales that measure symptoms (10 items), activity limitations (5 items), and emotional functioning (8 items) in the past 2 weeks. Each item was measured on a 7-point scale, with higher mean scores indicating better quality of life. Secondary measures included the Asthma Control Questionnaire and an asthma self-management index capturing steps to prevent and manage symptoms, self-efficacy, and lung function.Of 395 eligible adolescents, 35 refused, 38 did not show or were lost to contact, and 2 withdrew before randomization; 320 adolescents participated (mean [SD] age, 14.3 [1.71] years), including 168 boys (52.5%), 251 Black or African American adolescents (78.4%), and 232 adolescents (72.5%) with public health insurance. Of 320 enrolled, 303 were included in the longitudinal analysis. Response rates were 80% or higher at all time points. The peer-led group had greater improvement in outcomes than the adult-led group, with adjusted mean differences (AMDs) between baseline and 15 months of 0.75 vs 0.37 for quality of life (between-group AMD, 0.38; 95% CI, 0.07 to 0.63) and -0.59 vs -0.31 for asthma control (between-group AMD, -0.28; 95% CI, -0.51 to -0.01). Outcomes were not affected by bimonthly contact doses.In this randomized clinical trial, a peer-led asthma self-management education was more effective than an adult-led program in improving asthma outcomes, with the improvements sustained for up to 15 months. These findings suggest that a peer-led asthma self-management program should be considered in addressing the disproportionate asthma burden in racial and ethnic minority adolescents living in urban communities.ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02293499.

Estimating the impact of self-management education, influenza vaccines, nebulizers, and spacers on health utilization and expenditures for Medicaid-enrolled children with asthma

Introduction We quantify the effect of a set of interventions including asthma self-management education, influenza vaccination, spacers, and nebulizers on healthcare utilization and expenditures for Medicaid-enrolled children with asthma in New York and Michigan. Methods We obtained patients’ data from Medicaid Analytic eXtract files and evaluated patients with persistent asthma in 2010 and 2011. We used difference-in-difference regression to quantify the effect of the intervention on the probability of asthma-related healthcare utilization, asthma medication, and utilization costs. We estimated the average change in outcome measures from pre-intervention/intervention (2010) to post-intervention (2011) periods for the intervention group by comparing this with the average change in the control group over the same time horizon. Results All of the interventions reduced both utilization and asthma medication costs. Asthma self-management education, nebulizer, and spacer interventions reduced the probability of emergency department (20.8–1.5%, 95%CI 19.7–21.9% vs. 0.5–2.5%, respectively) and inpatient (3.5–0.8%, 95%CI 2.1–4.9% vs. 0.4–1.2%, respectively) utilizations. Influenza vaccine decreased the probability of primary care physician (6–3.5%, 95%CI 4.4–7.6% vs. 1.5–5.5%, respectively) visit. The reductions varied by state and intervention. Conclusions Promoting asthma self-management education, influenza vaccinations, nebulizers, and spacers can decrease the frequency of healthcare utilization and asthma-related expenditures while improving medication adherence.

Breathe Well, Live Well: Implementing an Adult Asthma Self-Management Education Program.

Asthma remains a significant health problem in the United States. Adults with poorly controlled asthma can affect their community in a number of ways, from lost productivity in the workplace to health care costs to premature death. Asthma self-management education helps individuals achieve better control of their asthma and is critical for the overall health and well-being of individuals with asthma. While there are numerous programs and initiatives targeting children with asthma, there is a lack of comparable focus on the needs of adults with asthma. The American Lung Association developed Breathe Well, Live Well, an adult asthma self-management education program, and launched it nationwide in 2007. The program for adults has a flexible delivery format for community-based implementation. This article describes the development, dissemination, and transformation of the program. Each stage of implementation showed positive changes in asthma self-management practices that contribute to better asthma control, and one local implementation additionally showed decreased reports of missed work and unscheduled health care visits among participants. The findings from the three evaluations support the use of Breathe Well, Live Well for broad community-based implementation to improve asthma self-management efficacy and behaviors.

Dissemination of Evidence-Based School Asthma Management Programs: Piloting Asthma 411 in an Urban Texas School District.

The dissemination and implementation (D&I) of evidence-based initiative (EBIs) is critical to improved public health. The Asthma 411 EBI was piloted in Texas from 2013 to 2015. The pilot's evaluation assessed its effectiveness and identified approaches to support D&I of school-health EBIs. The pilot study was conducted in two schools; service categories included: a consulting physician, enhanced school asthma services, and support for links to community health resources. Data was collected on Emergency Medical Service (EMS) calls, aggregated nursing services, demographic characteristics, availability of medication provided through existing policies, and informal interviews. During the pilot, school-day asthma-related Emergency Medical Service (EMS) calls were eliminated. Documented asthma self-management education, authorization for rescue medication, and efforts to communicate with parents and health providers increased. Between year-1 and year-2, the gap between unadjusted, weighted mean absences among students with and without asthma was reduced by 1.1 days. However, this difference was not seen in a fully adjusted negative, binomial regression model. Evaluation of the Asthma 411 pilot suggests many EBI benefits were retained and identifies factors that may facilitate D&I of school health EBIs. Future research will clarify impacts on absenteeism and determine if observed benefits are sustained.

Return on investment of self-management education and home visits for children with asthma

Objective Priorities of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 6|18 Initiative include outpatient asthma self-management education (ASME) and home-based asthma visits (home visit) as interventions for children with poorly-controlled asthma. ASME and home visit intervention programs are currently not widely available. This project was to assess the economic sustainability of these programs for state asthma control programs reimbursed by Medicaid. Methods We used a simulation model based on parameters from the literature and Medicaid claims, controlling for regression to the mean. We modeled scenarios under various selection criteria based on healthcare utilization and age to forecast the return on investment (ROI) using data from New York. The resulting tool is available in Excel or Python. Results Our model projected health improvement and cost savings for all simulated interventions. Compared against home visits alone, the simulated ASME alone intervention had a higher ROI for all healthcare utilization and age scenarios. Savings were primarily highest in simulated program participants who had two or more asthma-related emergency department visits or one inpatient visit compared to those participants who had one or more asthma-related emergency department visits. Segmenting the selection criteria by age did not significantly change the results. Conclusions This model forecasts reduced healthcare costs and improved health outcomes as a result of ASME and home visits for children with high urgent healthcare utilization (more than two emergency department visits or one inpatient hospitalization) for asthma. Utilizing specific selection criteria, state based asthma control programs can improve health and reduce healthcare costs.

Constructing an assessment framework for the quality of asthma smartphone applications

BackgroundEnhancing the self-management capability of asthma patients can improve their level of asthma control. Although the use of mobile health technology among asthmatics to facilitate self-management has become a growing area of research, studies of mobile health applications (apps), especially for evaluating indicators of asthma apps, are deficient in scope. This study aimed to develop a reliable framework to assess asthma apps (i.e., content and behavior change strategies) using the Delphi survey technique.MethodsAn initial list of quality rating criteria for asthma apps was derived from reviewing the literature and experts in the fields of respiratory disease and nursing informatics rated the items on the list in three rounds. The weights of items were determined employing an analytic hierarchy process (AHP).ResultsSixty-two items were retained within 10 domains. Consensus was reached on 32 items concerning asthma self-management education, 25 items concerning behavioral change strategies, and five items concerning principles for app design. There was moderate agreement among participants across all items in round three. The weights of the dimensions, sub-dimensions, and items ranged from 0.049 to 0.203, 0.138 to 1.000, and 0.064 to 1.000, respectively. All random consistency ratio values were less than 0.1.ConclusionsAsthma self-management education and strategies are essential parts to support self-management for patients. This analysis provides evidence of evaluating criteria for apps targeting chronic and common diseases.

A self-management education programme for adults with asthma

Introduction Globally, asthma is one of the major non-communicable diseases, with 235 million people currently suffering from the condition. In Saudi Arabia, there is a 4% prevalence of asthma among the adult population. This study aimed to develop an adult asthma patient self-management education programme that took into account the Saudi context and culture. Systematic review A systematic review was conducted to determine the most effective way of delivering asthma self-management education programmes. It was shown in the review that asthma was more prevalent in individuals with less education, and that nurses had an important role in educating patients with this disease. Following analysis of this evidence alongside the Saudi context, small-group education programmes delivered by nurses were selected as the most appropriate means of delivering education, which considered patient individual needs and cultural values to improve their health outcomes in terms of self-management. Methods An explanatory sequential complementary mixed-methods design was adopted. This design encompassed a quasi-experiment using a pre- and post-test comparative study, followed by a qualitative part using face-to-face interviews with patients. The intervention was an educational programme that included topics selected based on patients’ needs in the review and following the Saudi Initiative for Asthma (SINA) guidance.1 The programme was tested to determine whether it provide patients with the necessary knowledge and skills to self-manage their asthma and consequently reduce their visits to emergency departments. Further, the programme was approved and co-designed with nursing staff who provide care for patients with asthma in the selected hospital and following consultation with patients. The programme was delivered by nurses and other professionals who were trained to ensure the quality of delivery. Data were collected pre-, post- and at 3 and 6 months following the intervention and included topics related to asthma, Asthma Control Test, Asthma Self-Management Questionnaire, the Asthma Knowledge Questionnaire and the Patient Activation Measure (PAM) instrument. Prior to data collection, instruments were all translated to Arabic, the language of participants, and validated to assure the validity of patients’ responses. Patients in the control group were able to receive the intervention after 6 months, the last data collection point in the study. Findings Analysis of the responses between the pre- and post-tests demonstrate that patients with higher levels of knowledge had higher PAM scores. Patients’ scores in all datasets in phase 2 were higher than those in phase 1, which indicated that the education was effective and increased confidence in patients’ self-management of their asthma. Results to date suggest that the bespoke education is relevant and provides the necessary knowledge to increase confidence and patient activation towards disease self-management and reducing complications. Study progress Longer-term follow-up data and qualitative interviews will be completed in late February 2019. It is anticipated that these results will confirm that the educational programme is suited to the Saudi Arabian context, improves knowledge and increases confidence in the self-management of asthma.

Asthma self-management education in persons with work-related asthma – United States, 2012–2014

Objective: According to the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP), self-management education is an integral component of effective asthma care and should be offered to every patient with asthma. To estimate the proportion of persons with work-related asthma (WRA) who received asthma self-management education.Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of 2012–2014 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Asthma Call-back Survey data was conducted among ever-employed adults (≥18 years) with current asthma from 31 states and the District of Columbia.Results: Adults with WRA were significantly more likely than those with non-WRA to have ever taken a course to manage their asthma (15.7% versus 6.5%; PR = 2.1), been given an asthma action plan (43.5% versus 26.1%; PR = 1.7), shown how to use an inhaler (97.2% versus 95.8%; PR = 1.0), taught how to recognize early symptoms of an asthma episode (79.4% versus 64.1%; PR = 1.2), taught what to do during an asthma episode (86.4% versus 76.3%; PR = 1.1), taught how to use a peak flow meter to adjust daily medications (57.9% versus 41.7%; PR = 1.3), and advised to change things in home, school, or work (56.9% versus 30.4%; PR = 2.0). Moreover, targets for corresponding Healthy People 2020 respiratory disease objectives were met only among adults with WRA.Conclusions: Although adults with WRA were more likely to have received asthma self-management education, results suggest missed opportunities to provide asthma self-management education. Every healthcare visit should be used as an opportunity to discuss asthma self-management.

Asthma Predictors Influence on Self-management Asthma Education Status

Objective The objective of this study was to determine the characteristics of adults with active asthma who were most likely to acquire self-management asthma component education. Methods We analyzed adult data from the 2014 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)-Asthma Call-back Survey (ACBS). Multivariate logistic regression and multivariate linear regression models were used to analyze the association between asthma self-management education and predictors. Results Adults who had health insurance (aB = 0.33 [SE = 0.15], p < .05), routine care visits (aB = 0.75 [SE = 0.08], p < .05) and hospitalization (aB = 0.50 [SE = 0.23], p < .05) reported higher asthma education scores. Adults aged 18-34 years were more likely to report inhaler use instruction (aOR = 3.9; 95% CI: 2.5-6.3, p < .05), than older adults aged 65 years and older. Having a formal education, being a woman, and being black increased the likelihood of having a higher self-management score. Conclusion Having health insurance, making routine visits, and having asthma episodes were associated with multiple asthma education components which ensures social justice. Asthma control programs need to reexamine asthma education components to make sure they are promoted to persons regardless of their age, education level, or sex."

Trends in asthma self-management skills and inhaled corticosteroid use during pregnancy and postpartum from 2004 to 2017

ABSTRACTObjective: Asthma exacerbations and medication non-adherence are significant clinical problems during pregnancy. While asthma self-management education is effective, the number of education sessions required to maximise asthma management knowledge and inhaler technique and whether improvements persist postpartum, are unknown. This paper describes how asthma knowledge, skills, and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) use have changed over time. Methods: Data were obtained from 3 cohorts of pregnant women with asthma recruited in Newcastle, Australia between 2004 and 2017 (N = 895). Medication use, adherence, knowledge, and inhaler technique were compared between cohorts. Changes in self-management knowledge/skills and women's perception of medication risk to the fetus were assessed in 685 women with 5 assessments during pregnancy, and 95 women who had a postpartum assessment. Results: At study entry, 41%, 29%, and 38% of participants used ICS in the 2004, 2007, and 2013 cohorts, respectively (p = 0.017), with 40% non-adherence in each cohort. Self-management skills of pregnant women with asthma did not improve between 2004 and 2017 and possession of a written action plan remained low. Maximum improvements were reached by 3 sessions for medications knowledge and one session for inhaler technique, and were maintained postpartum. ICS adherence was maximally improved after one session, but not maintained postpartum. Perceived risk of asthma medications on the fetus was highest for corticosteroid-containing medication; and was significantly reduced following education. Conclusions: There was a high prevalence of non-adherence and poor self-management skills in all cohorts. More awareness of the importance of optimal asthma management during pregnancy is warranted, since no improvements were observed over the past decade.

Suitability of asthma education materials for school-age children: Implications for health literacy.

To investigate the suitability of asthma education materials for school-age children with asthma and elucidate how these children used their health-literacy abilities to identify whether the materials can be accepted, comprehended and applied. Effective asthma self-management education is influenced by the suitability of materials and an individual's health literacy. A mixed-method research design was developed using quantitative and qualitative surveys. The suitability of the materials was assessed on the basis of the Chinese version of the Suitability Assessment of Materials by five experts. In addition, five school-age children (age: 8-12years) were recruited and interviewed. In total, 25 pieces of asthma education material for children were collected. On the basis of their type, the materials were categorised as nine brochures, 11 leaflets and five videos. Of the 25 materials, 17 were rated as superior materials, whereas eight were rated as adequate materials. The suitability scores of the video-based materials were significantly higher than those of the brochures and leaflets (p=.006). One print material was considered to have a reading level suitable for fifth-grade or younger children, whereas the remaining materials were considered suitable for sixth-grade or older children. The following six health-literacy domains were identified: recognising asthma through body knowledge, posing reflective questions, identifying self-care difficulties, receiving adult guidance, learning with enjoyment and addressing learning requirements. The video-based materials had integrated content and were appealing to children. Cartoon animations, interactive computer games, and skill demonstrations may enhance learning stimulation and motivation and increase learning effects in children. The present results may help healthcare providers to understand children's capacities to manage their disease, effectively address children's requirements and function as a key resource for children to strengthen their literacy in asthma management.

Implementation of an Asthma Self-Management Education Guideline in the Emergency Department: A Feasibility Study.

Patients often present to emergency departments (EDs) for the management of chronic asthma. Because of the nature of ED care, national guideline recommendations for asthma education are generally not initiated in the ED. There is evidence that asthma education can have a positive effect on patient outcomes (; ). This study examines the feasibility of implementing an asthma self-management guideline in a tertiary care center ED. Despite protocol utilization by physicians (87%), nurse practitioners and physician assistants (66.7%), and nurses (41.7%), total compliance with national guideline was accomplished in only 25.93% of cases. Barriers to protocol implementation included staff education, high workload, rapid turnover, and competing initiatives within the department. Linear regression analysis identified high daily census as a predictor of protocol noncompliance (p = 0.033).
