Association of opium use and tobacco smoking with α-, β-, and γ-human papillomavirus oral infection.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) are linked to tobacco smoking, opium use, and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. However, little is known about the association of HPV infection with risk factors of HNSCCs, including opium and tobacco use. This cross-sectional analysis of a national multi-center case-control study in Iran included 498 HNSCC cases and 242 controls. We investigated the association of opium and tobacco use with α- (n = 21), β- (n = 46), and γ-HPV (n = 52) types in saliva samples using type-specific bead-based multiplex genotyping assays (TS-MPG). We found that α-HPV positivity was significantly associated with tobacco smoking (OR = 10.35; 95% CI = 1.15, 93; p = .03), but not with opium use (OR = 1.06; 95% CI = 0.41, 2.76; p = .89). Additionally, tobacco smoking correlated with an elevated risk of β-species 2 HPV infection (OR = 1.28; 95% CI = 1.04, 1.58; p = .020). Conversely, opium use showed a positive association with γ-species 12 HPV infection (OR = 5.67; 95% CI = 1.43, 22.44; p = .013). These findings indicate that tobacco and opium use may influence the risk of HPV infection in different ways depending on the HPV genus and species. Further studies are needed to replicate these findings in other populations.

Association of Human Papillomavirus Infection with Tonsillar Cancers: A Systematic Review

Vaccinations have shown a decrease in human papillomavirus (HPV) infection-related cervical cancer in women, but there has been a sharp rise in the HPV infection-related oropharyngeal cancer cases over the past few decades. Recent studies have suggested the association of HPV infections with tonsillar cancers as well and suggestions regarding preventive tonsillectomies in order to achieve a decrease in HPV infection-related oropharyngeal or tonsillar cancer have arisen. However, there is limited cumulative evidence validated at a global level to support the endorsement of this strategy. This research revolves around the concept of burden of tonsillar carcinomas due to oropharyngeal HPV infection. Thus, a systematic review and meta-analysis of existing studies was undertaken to estimate the pooled prevalence of tonsillar cancer associated with oropharyngeal HPV infection. Published articles on tonsillar cancer with and without HPV infection from PubMed, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science were systematically searched from inception until 23 December 2021. A random-effects model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence forest plots. The systematic review revealed that 50% of the reported cases of tonsillar cancer had an oropharyngeal HPV infection, questioning the preventive nature of an early tonsillectomy which is essentially an invasive surgical procedure. Large heterogeneity was reported in the included studies, and there was insufficient data for sub-group analysis. Future research and representative studies are required to thoroughly explore the correlation between HPV infection and tonsillar cancer.

The association of HPV infection and vaginal microbiota of reproductive women in China: A multicenter cohort study protocol

Cervical cancer is a global health concern. Persistent oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a prerequisite for the development of cervical cancer. Emerging research indicates that the vaginal microbiota may play both protective and harmful roles in the acquisition and persistence of HPV and the development of cervical cancer. This multicenter cohort study mainly aims to reveal the association of vaginal microbiota with the outcome of HPV infection in six months in women of reproductive age. We will recruit 50 research centers and enroll a total of about 10,000 female volunteers with a series of strict inclusion and exclusion criteria across China, including HPV positive and HPV negative women. A unified questionnaire will be used to obtain the sociodemographic information, clinical data and lifestyle of all volunteers. Specimens including vaginal secretions swabs and cervical exfoliated cells will be collected at the first visit and follow-up after six months. We will use 16S rRNA sequencing to characterize the vaginal microbiota of volunteers’ vaginal swabs. Twenty-one HPV genotypes and other sexually transmitted pathogens, including Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Mycoplasma hominis, Mycoplasma genitalium and Herpes simplex virus type Ⅱ will be examined using flow-through hybridization and gene chip. The association of HPV infection and vaginal microbiota will be investigated, and the core microbiota attributes to the persistent HPV infection will be analyzed in this study.

Evaluating the Strength of Association of Human Papillomavirus Infection With Penile Carcinoma: A Meta-Analysis.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection that is strongly associated with cervical cancer. A link to penile cancers has been suggested by case series. We sought to assess the strength of the association between HPV infection and penile cancer by meta-analysis. A literature search to identify population-based studies evaluating the risk of HPV infection with penile cancer was conducted via PubMed and Google Scholar databases through December 2020. Studies were included in the pooled analyses if they presented relative risk (RR) estimates comparing penile cancer cases with noncases by HPV exposure status. They were stratified by (1) type of HPV, (2) test used to determine past HPV infection, and (3) the penile cancer type. Pooled analyses were conducted for stratum with at least 2 independent studies using fixed-effects and random-effects models. Fourteen articles representing 9 study populations fit the inclusion criteria and were included in the pooled analysis. Based on these studies, the pooled RRs are 2.9 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.7-5.0; n = 4 studies) for invasive penile cancer and seropositivity to HPV16 L1, 4.5 (95% CI, 1.3-15.5; n = 2) for seropositivity to HPV18, and 8.7 for anogenital warts (95% CI, 5.1-14.8; n = 5). For the 3 studies reporting invasive and in situ penile cancer, the risk was 7.6 for anogenital warts. The pooled RRs indicate up to a 4.5-fold increased risk between seropositivity for HPV infection and invasive penile cancer. This is much lower than associations seen between HPV and cervical cancer.

Human papillomavirus and endometrial cancer (review of literature and meta-analysis)

The important role of human papillomavirus (HPV) of high carcinogenic risk in the emergence and development of cervical cancer is undeniable. Approximately 90 % of cases of verified cervical cancer are HPV positive. The level of infection with this virus exceeds that of gonococci, chlamydia and yeast infections. Currently, one of the most discussed issues is the possibility of the association of HPV with the risk of developing malignant neoplasms when localized in organs that are anatomically close to the cervix. One of these localizations is the body of the uterus. It is known that endometrial cancer is based on its pronounced hormone dependence. Nevertheless, many factors are involved in the carcinogenesis of endometrial neoplasms, including genetic and epigenetic disorders, as well as risk factors, which include alimentary, hormonal, hereditary causes. At the same time, a controversial issue is the involvement of HPV in the development of this type of cancer. The data on the presence of HPV in endometrial cancer are extremely contradictory: the researchers claim both the complete absence of the effect of the virus on the development of this type of cancer, and the detection of HPV in 60–80 % of cases of tumors. In this regard, it becomes necessary to systematize the currently available research results on this issue and to conduct a meta-analysis of the association of HPV infection with the risk of endometrial cancer.

The Association of Human Papillomavirus in Benign and Malignant Laryngeal Lesions-a Pilot Study.

Various etiological factors have been described in laryngeal carcinogenesis. Tobacco and alcohol play a major role in the development of laryngeal cancers. However, recently there has been an overshadowing of association of human papillomavirus infection in laryngeal cancers. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in malignant laryngeal lesions. This is a case control study. We conducted this study using tumor tissue specimens from 30 laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma patients and benign laryngeal tissue specimens from 30 cancer-free controls. The specimens from the lesion were sent to histopathological analysis as well as DNA extraction (DNeasy® Tissue kit) and polymerase chain reaction for detection of HPV. Positive samples underwent sequencing to detect the HPV serotype. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software. All 30 benign laryngeal lesion specimens were negative for the HPV DNA, while 4 of the 30 (7.5%) squamous cell carcinoma lesions were positive. One was HPV 16 and another one HPV 11. Two positive cases were not able to be sequenced probably due to low viral load. Our study suggests that the proportion of laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas attributable to infection by HPV seems to be low. Further prospective studies should be conducted with a larger group of patients to confirm the role of HPV in laryngeal cancers especially in treatment response and survival.

The role of HPV vaccination as a cancer prevention agent.

e13566 Background: Human papilloma virus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted agent and has extensive association with many malignancies such as cervical, vaginal, vulvar, penile, and head and neck cancers. Vaccination helps prevent sexually transmitted diseases due to HPV. In addition, it provides protection against cancers caused by persistent, high-risk HPV infection in both male and female. Methods: Data collected from the medical records of patients diagnosed with anogenital, and head and neck cancers during 2017-2019 were studied retrospectively and the association of HPV infection was analyzed. Results: There were thirty-three cases of anogenital, and head and neck cancers diagnosed during the study period. The following were the occurrences: penile cancer 1, anal cancer 4, cervical/uterine/vaginal cancers 10, and head and neck cancer including tonsil, base of tongue, vocal cord, and glottis 18. HPV status was available in twenty-six (79%) patients. Fourteen patients were positive for high-risk 16/18 HPV strain, twelve were HPV negative, and HPV status was unknown for seven patients. Most of the patients were smokers and none of them had received HPV vaccination. The patients were treated appropriately with chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. Conclusions: Human papilloma virus (HPV) infection type 16/18 is the most common sexually transmitted infection associated with significant anogenital and head and neck cancers.Vaccinations protect against persistent, high-risk HPV infection that may lead to malignancies. However, the HPV vaccination initiation and completion rates are only 41.7% and 21.6% respectively in males, and 60% and 39.7% respectively in females. The lack of opportunity does not appear to be a major reason for this low coverage. Some of the barriers for low adoption of HPV vaccination were concern about vaccine safety (70%), lack of knowledge about HPV related diseases (56%), very young to vaccinate (56%), fear of riskier sexual behavior (56%), and reluctance as not being included in the required immunization schedule (71%). In addition, several people refused HPV vaccination due to misinformation in social media. The primary purpose of HPV vaccination is to help prevent sexually transmitted diseases. Further, such vaccination can also prevent several cancers caused by persistent infection. Therefore, HPV vaccination has the potential to eliminate such risk if enforced at a young age in school. The above study and data stress this role and the importance of public awareness of the HPV vaccine as a cancer prevention agent.

Association between EGFR expression and clinical outcome of laryngeal HPV squamous cell carcinoma

Background: Expression of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA can serve as independent prognostic factors in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the larynx. EGFR correlation with the course of disease and its effect on survival makes EGFR expression a negative prognostic factor, whereas HPV DNA is a positive prognostic factor.Aim: To assess the association of EGFR expression with clinical outcome of laryngeal HPV SCC.Materials and methods: This retrospective study included 196 SCC patients operated on at the Department of ENT, Head and Neck Surgery, Split University Hospital Center in Split, Croatia, between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2009.Results: The association of HPV infection and EGFR expression was found to be statistically significant, and so was the difference in survival between patient groups with different HPV to EGFR expression ratio.Conclusions: The group of laryngeal HPV SCC patients with increased EGFR expression had shorter survival, confirming EGFR as a major component in predicting patient prognosis and survival.Significance: This article confirms the importance of EGFR expression as a biomarker in laryngeal SCC.

Association of human papillomavirus infection and inflammation in cervical cancer.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) associated cancers, and in particular cervical cancer, are considered to be directly stimulated by HPV oncogenes. Alternatively, these types of cancers could also be indirectly stimulated by HPV-induced chronic inflammations, which in turn are also caused by HPV oncogenes activity. Chronic inflammation is associated with repeated tissue injury and development of mutations in the vital tumor suppressor genes. Thus, it is important to understand that the persistent HPV infection and its associated chronic inflammation is responsible for the progression of HPV-induced cancers. HPV E5, E6 and E7 could upregulate the expression of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and prostaglandin (PG) E2 followed by the activation of the COX-PG pathway. This pathway is assumed to be the main cause of HPV-induced inflammation. Additionally, HPV oncogenes could have an impact on the upregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines in HPV-positive patients. The upregulation of such cytokines accelerates the incidence of inflammation following HPV infection. Other factors such as microRNAs, which are involved in the inflammation pathways and aging, give rise to the increased level of pro-inflammatory cytokines and could also be responsible for the acceleration of HPV-induced inflammation and consequent cervical cancer. In this review, the exact roles of HPV oncogenes in the occurrence of inflammation in cervical tissue, and the effects of other factors in this event are evaluated.

Association of HPV infection and clearance with cervicovaginal immunology and the vaginal microbiota.

Cervical human papillomavirus (HPV) infection may increase HIV risk. Since other genital infections enhance HIV susceptibility by inducing inflammation, we assessed the impact of HPV infection and clearance on genital immunology and the cervico-vaginal microbiome. Genital samples were collected from 65 women for HPV testing, immune studies and microbiota assessment; repeat HPV testing was performed after 6 months. All participants were HIV-uninfected and free of bacterial STIs. Cytobrush-derived T cell and dendritic cell subsets were assessed by multiparameter flow cytometry. Undiluted cervico-vaginal secretions were used to determine cytokine levels by multiplex ELISA, and to assess bacterial community composition and structure by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Neither HPV infection nor clearance were associated with broad differences in cervical T cell subsets or cytokines, although HPV clearance was associated with increased Langerhans cells and HPV infection with elevated IP-10 and MIG. Individuals with HPV more frequently had a high diversity cervico-vaginal microbiome (community state type IV) and were less likely to have an L. gasseri predominant microbiome. In summary, HPV infection and/or subsequent clearance was not associated with inflammation or altered cervical T cell subsets, but associations with increased Langerhans cells and the composition of the vaginal microbiome warrant further exploration.

The association of human papillomavirus infection in indian cohort of head-and-neck squamous cell cancer patients and its impact on treatment outcome

Context: Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinomas (HNSCCs) patients with HPV-infected tumors have more favorable prognosis, however data is very sparse in Indian literature. Aim: Our study aims to detect p16 (a surrogate for tumor HPV DNA) in HNSCC and its effect on the survival of the patients. Settings and Design: Observational (prospective study). Materials and Methods: This study was conducted amongst 50 cases of HNSCC. All tissue samples for biopsy were subjected to Immunohistochemistry to study p16 expression, a surrogate marker for HPV. The patients were treated by Radiotherapy or concurrent chemo-radiotherapy depending on performance status and stage of disease. Evaluation was done at 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months after treatment. Survival analysis was used to check the outcome of Radiotherapy using Kaplan Meyer survival curves and cox proportional hazards model. Results: Majority of patients had Stage III disease (33 patients – 66%). 16 (32%) patients were HPV positive and 34(64%) were negative. Out of the 16 HPV positive cases, majority, 15 (93.75%) cases were associated with oropharyngeal carcinoma. 2 year DFS for HPV positive was 84% compared to 58% in HPV negative patients (P = 0.089) and 2 year overall survival for HPV positive patients was 83% compared to 52% for HPV negative patients (P = 0.03). Conclusions: Our study concluded that 32% of the HNSCC patients were positive for HPV. Patients who were HPV positive had better disease free survival and overall survival.

Human Papilloma Virus in Oral Cavity Cancer and Relation to Change in Quality of Life Following Treatment-a Pilot Study from Northern India.

Human papilloma virus (HPV)-associated head and neck cancer (HNC) has generated significant amount of research interest in recent times with focus shifted to oral cavity squamous cell cancer (OCSCC) after oropharyngeal cancer. Due to high incidence of OCSCC and anecdotal reports on association of HPV infection from northern region of India, this study was conceived to investigate HPV infection and establish its association with lifestyle habits such as tobacco, alcohol consumption, oro-genital sex, number of sexual contacts, and change in quality of life posttreatment. A total of 43 primary OCSCC biopsy specimens were collected. These samples were analyzed for HPV DNA genotyping which was done by using 13 high-risk HPV real-time PCR kits. Quality of life was assessed using University of Washington questionnaire for HNC patients, which was administered pretreatment and 3-months posttreatment. HPV presence was confirmed in only three patients (7.0%). HPV positivity did not find any statistical correlation with age, gender, residence, addiction habit, stage, tumor size, nodal status, tumor grade, and number of sexual contacts. There was no significant (p>0.05) difference in the average percent change in QOL parameters from pretreatment to posttreatment when correlated with HPV status.

Prevalence of high–risk human papillomavirus in women from turkey

Objectives: Data on the seroprevalence of Human papillomavirus (HPV) in Turkey are limited. The aim of this study was to characterize the high risk types of HPV in cervical cytology specimens of women in Turkey during routine cervical cancer screening. Methods: Women aged 30 years and older who had been admitted to Tepecik Education and Research Hospital in Izmir province for routine cervical cancer screening between June 2012 and December 2014 were enrolled to the study. Cervical swab samples were collected for HPV-DNA examination. For identifying HPV genotypes, cervical samples were analyzed by Cobas® 4800 HPV Test qualitative real-time PCR system (Roche Molecular Systems Inc., Alameda, CA, USA) for HPV types 16, 18 and the other 12 high risk HPV (hrHPV) types (31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68). Results: In this study, the overall HPV positivity was detected in 10.07% (539/5350 samples) of women during routine cervical cancer screening. Of these; HPV type 16 was detected in 187 samples (31.59%), HPV type 18 in 46 samples (7.77%), and other hrHPV (pool of 12 genotypes) in 359 samples (60.64%), either as single or multiple infections combined. Of 539 HPV positive samples, 489 (90.72%) were single type HPV infections and the remainder (n=50, 9.28%) were multiple type infections. There was no significant difference in HPV prevalence by decades of life. Conclusions: Our results showed that hrHPV types other than type 16 or type 18 are the most detected genotypes in women undergoing routine cervical cancer screening. Data of the heterogeneity in HPV type distribution must be taken into account for the decision of vaccination and screening modalities. Since the vaccines have been developed to reduce the global burden of HPV related diseases, determining the distribution of HPV genotypes is crucial for implementation of vaccines [4]. In consequence of the lack of reliable data on the distribution of HPV types among Turkish women, in the current study we aimed to investigate the high risk types of HPV in cervical cytology specimens of women aged older than 30 years and to identify the distribution according to the ages of the patients.

The prevalence of human papillomavirus and its impact on cervical dysplasia in Northern Canada

IntroductionCertain types of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) are sexually transmitted and highly associated with development of cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer but the distribution of HPV infection in the North, particularly amongst First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples, is little known. The purposes of the study are to identify the prevalence of type-specific HPV infections and the association of different HPV types with cervical dysplasia among women in Northern Canada.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study with attendants of the routine or scheduled Pap testing program in the Northwest Territories (NWT), Nunavut, Labrador and Yukon, Canada. Approximately half of each sample was used for Pap test and the remaining was used for HPV genotyping using a Luminex-based method. Pap test results, HPV types, and demographic information were linked for analyses.ResultsResults from 14,598 specimens showed that HPV infection was approximately 50% higher among the Aboriginal than the non-Aboriginal population (27.6% vs. 18.5%). Although the most common HPV type detected was HPV 16 across region, the prevalence of other high risk HPV types was different. The age-specific HPV prevalence among Aboriginal showed a ‘U’ shape which contrasted to non-Aboriginal. The association of HPV infection with cervical dysplasia was similar in both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal populations.ConclusionsThe HPV prevalence was higher in Northern Canada than in other Areas in Canada. The prevalence showed a higher rate of other high risk HPV infections but no difference of HPV 16/18 infections among Aboriginal in comparison with non-Aboriginal women. This study provides baseline information on HPV prevalence that may assist in surveillance and evaluation systems to track and assess HPV vaccine programs.

Papilomavírus humano e infecções do trato genital inferior em mulheres com exame colpocitológico anormal <b>[Resumo em Português]</b>

AIMS: To study the associations of positive human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA in the female genital tract with Gardnerella vaginalis, Trichomonas vaginalis and Candida sp. vaginitis, and with possible socio-demographic risk factors for HPV infections. METHODS: The study was conducted with 208 patients with abnormal cervical cytological examination assisted at the Gynecology Service of Central Clinic of Caxias do Sul University, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, analyzing the presence of HPV DNA by polymerase chain reaction and associating the results to diagnosis of vaginal infections obtained from the medical charts of the patients. RESULTS: HPV DNA was detected in 60.1% of all cases analyzed; 93% of them presented simple infections and 6.9% showed multiple infections. Seventeen viral types were identified, being HPV16 the most frequent (38.8%). At least one of the vaginitis investigated was observed in 57,2% of the patients. Gardnerella vaginalis was found in 45.7%, Candida sp. in 20.2%, and Trichomonas vaginalis in 3.8% of the patients examined. No statistical association between the presence of HPV DNA and other infection of the lower genital tract or socio-demographic risk factors was observed. CONCLUSIONS: No association of HPV infection with other infections of the female genital tract or with socio-demographic features could be found. Multiple infections with up to five types of HPV were observed in a low percentage of women. It is difficult to clearly define a group at high risk for HPV infection. All women with abnormal cervical cytological examination are possible carriers of HPV and other infections of the lower genital tract.

Association of HPV infections with second primary tumors in early‐staged oral cavity cancer

The infection of human papilloma virus (HPV) has been reported in head and neck cancer; however, the clinical significance of HPV infection on the pathogenesis of oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is still uncertain. The study recruited 103 patients with pathological early-stage OSCC between March 1997 and December 2003 from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan. Tumor specimens were HPV-genotyped by the EasychipVR HPV Blot method. Clinical association study was performed by using chi-square, Kaplan-Meier, and logrank tests. Thirty-one patients (30.1%) were positive for HPV infection. The most frequent HPV types were types 16 (16 patients, 51.6%) and 18 (seven patients, 22.6%). HPV infection was not associated with tumor aggressiveness (pathological tumor stage or differentiation status), risk exposure (alcohol, cigarette, or areca quid chewing habit), or the treatment outcome (disease-free survival or overall survival). However, infection with HPV-18 was associated with the occurrence of a second primary cancers (P = 0.033), indicating the infection of HPV in OSCC enhances the susceptibility of developing secondary malignancy. There are 30% of the patients with OSCC infected with HPV, with most high-risk types. HPV-18 infection may enhance the susceptibility of second primary tumors. Large scale of validation study will be needed to confirm this result.

Association of Human Papillomavirus Infection and Abnormal Anal Cytology among HIV-Infected MSM in Beijing, China

BackgroundIn the recent years, dramatic increases in HIV transmission among men who have sex with men (MSM) have been observed in China. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection related anal cancer is more common among HIV-infected MSM as compared to the general population. However, HPV infection and anal cytology has been rarely studied in HIV-infected MSM in China.MethodsHIV-infected MSM in Beijing, China were invited to participate in this study between January and April 2011. Anal swabs were collected for examining cytology and HPV genotypes.ResultsNinety-five eligible participants with complete questionnaire and laboratory data were included in the analyses. Thirty six of them (37.9%) showed abnormal anal cytology as follows: atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) in 19 (20.0%), atypical squamous cells but cannot exclude HSIL (ASC-H) in 1 (1.1%), low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) in 15 (15.8%), and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) in 1 (1.1%). HPV6 (20.0%), HPV16 (10.9%), HPV56 (10.9%), HPV52 (9.1%) and HPV39 (9.1%) were observed most frequently among those with normal anal cytology, while different distribution was found in the ones with abnormal anal cytology as HPV6 (19.4%), HPV16 (19.4%), HPV45 (16.7%), HPV52 (16.7%) and HPV18 (11.1%). In addition, HPV16, HPV45, HPV52 and HPV18 were the most frequent high-risk types in patients with abnormal anal cytology. HPV multiplicity was found to be significantly related to the prevalence of abnormal anal cytology (p for trend = 0.04).ConclusionsHigh prevalence of HPV infection and abnormal anal cytology was observed among HIV-infected MSM in China. Infection of multiple HPV types or high-risk types was found to be associated with an increased risk of abnormal anal cytology.

Human Papillomavirus Infection and Bladder Cancer Risk: A Meta-analysis

Despite an increase in the number of molecular epidemiological studies conducted in recent years to evaluate the association between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and risk of bladder cancer, the studies remain inconclusive. The prevalence of HPV in bladder cancer was estimated by pooling data from 52 studies, taking into consideration the heterogeneity from major related parameters including study region, histological type, HPV DNA specimen, publication calendar period, and detection method. Moreover, the association of HPV infection with bladder cancer was tested by a meta-analysis with 19 case-control studies. An HPV prevalence of 16.88% (95% confidence interval [CI], 15.53%-18.31%) among the bladder cancer cases was revealed, most of whom were high-risk HPV types (15.82% [95% CI, 14.37%-17.36%]). The prevalence varied by region, types of HPV DNA specimen, and polymerase chain reaction primers used. A significantly increased risk of bladder cancer was shown for the positivity of overall HPV (odds ratio, 2.84 [95% CI, 1.39-5.80]), which was also infuenced by HPV type, study region, HPV DNA specimen, and detection method. Infection of high-risk HPV types, especially HPV16, may play a role in bladder carcinogenesis.
