Evaluation of Grouting for Hydraulic Barriers in Rock

In January 1964, Engineering Geology made its debut as the bulletin of the Association of Engineering Geologists. The inaugural issue consisted of a collection of five papers on grouting, which were presented at the 6th Annual AEG Meeting in San Francisco, California, in October 1963 (Campbell and Daly, 1964; Fabregue, 1964; Grant, 1964a; Karol, 1964; and O'Neil and Lyons, 1964. The authors of those papers shared their experience on various projects employing grouting as a means to create a hydraulic barrier in the subsurface. Nearly a half century later, grouting continues to play a prominent role in the profession. The present authors continue the tradition of sharing experience by discussing methods for evaluating the adequacy and progress of grouting and items to consider in evaluating the performance of grouting for hydraulic barriers in rock. Methods to evaluate the adequacy and progress of a grouting program include analysis of drilling data (water losses and water levels), water pressure testing results (closure trends), grouting records, and piezometer data; drilling, imaging, and testing verification holes; seepage monitoring; excavation; and performance testing. Items to consider in evaluating the performance of grouting include grouting objectives, grout materials and mixes, grouting methods and procedures, hole geometry and spacing, hole sequencing and staging, and field quality control.

Citation for Honorary Member of the Association of Engineering Geologists: Richard James Proctor

The undersigned respectfully nominate our long-time colleague, Richard James Proctor, of San Clemente, California, as an Honorary Member of the Association of Engineering Geologists (AEG). Our nomination is based on Richard's near-half century of outstanding participation and service to the engineering geologic profession in general and to the AEG in particular. Richard represents the second wave of practicing engineering geologists, those who entered practice not long after World War II. He is a native of Southern California and came to his practice in engineering geology after graduating from California State University, Los Angeles, in 1954, and serving as a cartographic engineer soldier in the U.S. Army. Richard has become a living legend in Southern California geology in his fifty years of practice. Richard earned an MA in Geology at UCLA in 1958, completing a bedrock mapping thesis at Desert Hot Springs, California, along the great San Andreas fault. This was at a time when the practice of applying engineering seismology and engineering geology to paleoseismology and earthquake engineering was still in its infancy, and Richard's contribution helped bridge the interface between the disciplines. His thesis was published by the California Geological Survey as its Special Report 94 (1968). Memorial to Alice Standish Allen, Honorary Member (1907-2002)

We have lost the woman we believe to have been the first female engineering geologist in North America. Elected Honorary Member of the Association of Engineering Geologists (AEG) in 1987, Alice served her entire professional career as an engineering geologist. She began her work with the federal government beginning in 1936, one of the first of a long line that had begun only in 1934 with Federal Works Progress projects. Alice was a native of Boston; she was brought up at Newtonville, MA, then Lexington, MA. She completed a bachelor of arts degree in geology at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA. Alice completed a master's degree at Wisconsin and all but her dissertation at Northwestern, both in geology, and then took employment with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in 1936. She served in Washington, DC, until her retirement in 1982. During this time she was one of the first members of the USGS Military Geology Unit (1942), then the Engineering Geology Branch, then Office of Chief of Engineers, U.S. Army, and finally the resident subsidence-mitigation expert at headquarters of the U.S. Bureau of Mines. At the USGS, no doubt as a result of her association at the University of Wisconsin, Alice was selected to act as the Staff Secretary to the Committee on Geologic Names, setting up the formal stratigraphic nomenclature to be reviewed and passed on by the Committee. History of Engineering Geology in the California Department of Water Resources

Engineering geology has played an essential role in the projects of the California State Department of Water Resources (DWR). Numerous pioneering techniques by DWR geologists include a) the first active element analog/digital model of a groundwater basin, b) cost estimates for tunneling, c) test plots evaluating shallow land subsidence (hydro-compaction), d) a mobile rock mechanics laboratory, e) field and laboratory evaluations of specific yield, and f) determination of coastal aquifers subject to sea-water intrusion. Eventual results of these techniques include a) digital ground-water basin models with increasing complexity, b) and c) choice of the lowest cost route and geotechnical methods to bring water to southern California, d) rock properties available to engineers for preliminary design, e) values of storage capacity for 250 ground-water basins, and f) construction of fresh-water injection barriers to preserve ground-water basins. Geologists obtained and interpreted for their engineer colleagues the essential geologic information utilizing advanced geophysical and drilling techniques for both the California Water Plan and the State Water Project. The former is a master plan for utilization of all the water resources of the state. The latter, now essentially complete, included planning, design, and construction of 14 dams, 21 pumping plants, an underground power plant, 11 power recovery stations, 6 tunnels, and 561 mi of aqueduct, bringing water to the San Francisco Bay area and from the central and northern parts of the State to the heavily populated south. A geothermal test well completed by DWR in the Imperial Valley encountered fluid of insufficiently high temperature for economic development. DWR geologists have been active in the initial organization and the development of the Association of Engineering Geologists, and have also been active in the Geological Society of America, particularly in the Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology Divisions.
