Prevalence and Associated Factors of Depressive Disorder after Exposed Prolonged Traumatic Event

IntroductionDepressive disorder is one of the most typical psychiatric disorder that occurs after a traumatic event. However, there has been minimal research regarding the prevalence and associated factors of depression after a traumatic event.ObjectivesTherefore, this study aims to investigate the prevalence of depressive symptoms and associated factors in the residents of the Gangjeong village, who have been exposed to a traumatic event recently for a prolonged period.MethodsThe subjects of this study were the residents of the Gangjeong village, who have been exposed to a traumatic event related to the construction of the Jeju Civilian-Military Complex Port. The questionnaires were used to assess the participants` general characteristics (sex, age, marital status, occupation, self-perceived health, etc.); in addition, for the clinical evaluation, overall stress was assessed through the Global Assessment of Recent Stress Scale (GARS), social support through Functional Social Support Questionnaire (FSSQ) and suicide risk through Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview-Plus (M.I.N.I-Plus). In order to evaluate the depressive symtpoms, CES-D (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale) was used.ResultsIn 713 subjects, the prevalence of depressive symptoms was 18.5% (95% CI=15.66-21.36) (Table 1). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified the length of residence and marital status as factors associated with depressive symptoms (Table 2). Furthermore, the depression group has a significantly higher score of overall stress (GARS), suicide risk and the lack of social support (FSSQ), in comparison with the non-depression group (Figure 1) group (depression gr. vs non-depression gr. : 28.8±15.0 vs 12.8±10.1, 4.9±8.0 vs 1.1±3.6, 44.8±13.2 vs 34.0±13.9, respectively).ConclusionsThe prevalence of depressive symptoms was higher among the study population compared to the general population. People exposed to the traumatic event, especially after prolonged exposure, should be assessed environment factors, the status of overall stress, social support and the suicidal risk.Disclosure of InterestNone Declared

Reliability and Validity of the Korean Version of the Parental Stress Scale for Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

ObjectiveThis study standardizes the Parental Stress Scale (PSS) for Republic of Korean parents of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and verifies its reliability and validity. MethodsData from 160 parents of children with ADHD who completed the following self-reported questionnaires were analyzed: the Korean ADHD Rating Scales, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory, the PSS, and the Global Assessment of Recent Stress Scale. All scale items were measured for reliability and validity, and the appropriate factors for measuring stress in Korean parents with ADHD children were extracted. ResultsExploratory and confirmatory factor analyses derived two sub-factors and 11 items. Goodness of fit was confirmed, and the scale was deemed suitable for explaining stress in parents of children with ADHD. ConclusionIn this study, the validity and reliability of the K-PSS-ADHD were investigated. We expect that the K-PSS-ADHD will be used as a basis for future studies on stress in parents of children with ADHD.

Development of a Modified Korean East Asian Student Stress Inventory by Comparing Stress Levels in Medical Students with Those in Non-Medical Students.

BackgroundMedical students are usually under more stress than that experienced by non-medical students. Stress testing tools for Korean medical students have not been sufficiently studied. Thus, we adapted and modified the East Asian Student Stress Inventory (EASSI), a stress testing tool for Korean students studying abroad, and verified its usefulness as a stress test in Korean university students. We also compared and analyzed stress levels between medical and non-medical students.MethodsA questionnaire survey was conducted on medical and non-medical students of a national university, and the responses of 224 students were analyzed for this study. Factor analysis and reliability testing were performed based on data collected for 25 adapted EASSI questions and those on the Korean version of the Global Assessment of Recent Stress Scale (GARSS). A correlation analysis was performed between the 13 modified EASSI questions and the GARSS, and validity of the modified EASSI was verified by directly comparing stress levels between the two student groups.ResultsThe 13 questions adapted for the EASSI were called the modified EASSI and classified into four factors through a factor analysis and reliability testing. The Pearson's correlation analysis revealed a significant correlation between the modified EASSI and the Korean version of the GARSS, suggesting a complementary strategy of using both tests.ConclusionThe validity and reliability of the EASSI were verified. The modified Korean EASSI could be a useful stress test for Korean medical students. Our results show that medical students were under more stress than that of non-medical students. Thus, these results could be helpful for managing stress in medical students.

Stress management and mind-body medicine: focusing on relaxation and meditation

Stress management is important and various stress management methods are required in the area of clinical preventive services. Although defining stress is somewhat complicated, stress can usually be divided into two concepts, stressors and the stress reaction. Stressors are stimuli that arouse the stress reaction. Examples are disasters, life events requiring changes, and everyday hassles. The stress reaction is often called the ‘fight or flight reaction’ and is mediated by the sympathetic nervous system and various hormones, including cortisol and catecholamine. Stress is closely related with health behaviors and several chronic diseases. Stress is measured using biological tests or self report, including questionnaires and interviews. Psychosocial Wellbeing Index-Short Form, Brief Ecounter PsychoSocial Instrument-Korean version, Global Assessment of Recent Stress Scale, and Symptom Checklist-90-Revised are examples of questionnaires that are widely used in Korea. Stress coping methods are categorized into stimuli-oriented methods, cognitive-behavioral methods, and mind-body interventions. Relaxation and meditation are widely used mind-body medical interventions. Relaxation Response and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction are two of the most widely used meditative programs in the Western mainstream medical system. Abdominal breathing, Progressive Muscular Relaxation, relaxing imagery, Autogenic Training, and biofeedback are other well-known techniques for relaxation and stress management. Relaxation and meditation are effective in improving health behaviors and quality of life, and complement the treatment methods of various chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disorders and cancer. Relaxation and meditation also seem to be effective methods for use in clinical preventive services. Program development, standardization, and further study are necessary for more widespread use of mind-body interventions in the area of clinical preventive services.

Effect of integrated yoga practices on immune responses in examination stress - A preliminary study

Background:Stress is often associated with an increased occurrence of autonomic, cardiovascular, and immune system pathology. This study was done to evaluate the impact of stress on psychological, physiological parameters, and immune system during medical term -academic examination and the effect of yoga practices on the same.Materials and Methods:The study was carried out on sixty first-year MBBS students randomly assigned to yoga group and control group (30 each). The yoga group underwent integrated yoga practices for 35 minutes daily in the presence of trained yoga teacher for 12 weeks. Control group did not undergo any kind of yoga practice or stress management. Physiological parameters like heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure were measured. Global Assessment of Recent Stress Scale and Spielbergers State Anxiety score were assessed at baseline and during the examination. Serum cortisol levels, IL-4, and IFN-γ levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique.Result:In the yoga group, no significant difference was observed in physiological parameters during the examination stress, whereas in the control group, a significant increase was observed. Likewise, the indicators of psychological stress showed highly significant difference in control group compared with significant difference in yoga group. During the examination, the increase in serum cortical and decrease in serum IFN-γ in yoga group was less significant (P<0.01) than in the control group (P<0.001). Both the groups demonstrated an increase in serum IL-4 levels, the changes being insignificant for the duration of the study.Conclusion:Yoga resists the autonomic changes and impairment of cellular immunity seen in examination stress.

Perceived Life Stress and Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal condition produced by overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria. Consequences of the condition may include preterm birth and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Because stress can suppress immune function, increased stress might increase the risk of BV. Our objective was to determine whether life stress was associated with risk of bacterial vaginosis in a cohort of nonpregnant women. A total of 411 African American women receiving routine gynecological care were recruited from two New York City hospitals. They were asked to rate the pressure they felt over the last week as a result of change, relationships, sickness, and finances using the Global Assessment of Recent Stress scale. An overall measure of stress was created by summing the responses over the categories. Stress was categorized into low, intermediate, and high tertiles. BV was diagnosed by gram stain score. In almost all domains of life stress, women with high stress were more likely to have BV than those with low stress; however, none of the differences reached statistical significance. Thirty-four percent of women with BV had high overall stress as opposed to 26% of women without BV, giving an adjusted relative risk (RR) of 1.4 (95% confidence interval, 0.95, 2.1). In a cohort of African American women in New York City, perceived life stress showed no clear association with BV. Because of the prevalence of both the exposure and the disease, further study is warranted.

Anxious Attachment and Severity of Depressive Symptomatology in Women

ABSTRACT The present research evaluated a conceptual model that links anxious attachment to depressive symptomatology in women. Four hundred and twenty women completed the following measures: Socio-demographic questionnaire, the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), the Reciprocal Attachment Questionnaire, the Social Support Questionnaire, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Global Assessment of Recent Stress Scale. Results indicate that feared loss of the attachment figure, intense proximity seeking and lack of use of the attachment figure were predictive of depressive symptomatology. We also found that lower levels of self-esteem and higher levels of recent stress were predictive of depressive symptomatology. The implications of these findings for the understanding of symptoms of depression in women is discussed.

Anxious attachment and self-reported depressive symptomatology in women.

Lack of intimacy has been identified as an important provoking agent that increases the risk of depressive symptoms in women. This study precisely characterized lack of intimacy by assessing a woman's attachment style and investigated the specificity of association between depressive symptoms and an anxious attachment pattern. Four hundred and twenty women participated in this cross-sectional study of depressive symptomatology and anxious attachment. All participants completed the following measures: a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), the Reciprocal Attachment Questionnaire, the Social Support Questionnaire, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the Global Assessment of Recent Stress Scale. A score of 16 or above on the CES-D, which indicates the presence of depressive symptoms, was used to divide the sample into 2 groups: a depressed group (N = 129) and a nondepressed group (N = 291). We found that women in the depressive symptomatology group were more likely than women in the nondepressive symptomatology group to exhibit anxious attachment and adverse social and cognitive characteristics. Lower levels of self-esteem and higher levels of recent stress were also predictive of depressive symptomatology. Feared loss of the attachment figure and a lack of use of the attachment figure were independent predictors of depressive symptomatology in the same model. The feared loss of security associated with an attachment figure seems to be related to an increased likelihood of depressive symptoms.
