Age and sex differences in the effects of short- and long-term exposure to air pollution on endothelial dysfunction.

The effects of air pollution on endothelial function remain unclear across populations. We aimed to use brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) to identify demographic differences in the effects of air pollution exposure on endothelial dysfunction. We measured FMD in 850 participants from October 2016 to January 2020. Location-specific concentrations of fine particulate matter < 2.5μm aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5), inhalable particulate matter < 10μm aerodynamic diameter (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone (O3) measured by fixed ambient air monitoring stations were collected for short- and long-term exposure assessment. Multiple linear regression models and restricted cubic splines were used to assess the associations before and after stratification by age and sex. This study eventually included 828 participants [551 (66.5%) younger than 65 years and 553 (66.8%) men]. Each 10µg/m3 increase in 7-day exposure to PM2.5 and PM10 was significantly linearly associated with a 0.07% (β = -0.07, 95% CI: -0.13 to -0.004) and 0.05% (β = -0.05, 95% CI: -0.10 to -0.004) decrease in FMD in the fully adjusted model. After full adjustment, long-term exposure to all air pollutants was significantly associated with impaired FMD. Each 10µg/m3 increase in long-term exposure to PM2.5 and PM10 was significantly associated with a -0.18% (95% CI: -0.34 to -0.03) and - 0.23% (95% CI: -0.40 to -0.06) change in FMD, respectively. After stratification, the associations of lower FMD with long-term exposure to PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, and CO significantly persisted in men and participants younger than 65 years instead of women or older participants. For short-term exposure, we observed differences consistent with long-term exposure and a stronger effect of 7-day exposure to SO2 in men due to a significant interaction effect. Short- and long-term exposure to different air pollutants are strongly associated with decreased endothelial function, and susceptibility to air pollution varies significantly with age and sex.

Chronic exposure to drinking water nitrate and trihalomethanes in the French CONSTANCES cohort

Trihalomethanes (THMs) and nitrate are widespread chemicals in drinking water. Chronic exposure has been associated with increased cancer risk despite inconclusive evidence, partly due to the challenges in long-term exposure assessment and potential exposure misclassification.We estimated concentrations of nitrate and THMs in drinking water using a public regulatory monitoring database (SISE-Eaux) for CONSTANCES, a French population-based prospective cohort.We obtained 26,322,366 measurements of drinking water parameters from 2000 to 2020. We excluded missing, implausible and duplicated measurements; we corrected or imputed missing geocodes of sampling locations; we calculated the annual median concentration of nitrate and THMs by surveillance area. To predict missing annual median concentrations, linear mixed models with random intercept using surveillance area as a clustering variable were developed for each region for nitrate and the four THM components (chloroform, chlorodibromomethane, bromodichloromethane and bromoform) separately. Concentrations in the nearest surveillance area from the household were merged per year among 75,462 participants with residential history geocoded for 2000–2020. Estimated concentrations resulting from this approach were compared with measured concentrations in 100 samples collected in Paris, Rennes and Saint-Brieuc in 2021.Median annual concentrations of total THMs and nitrate at study participants’ homes for 2000–2020 were, respectively, 15.7 μg/l (IQR: 15.2) and 15.2 mg/l (IQR: 20.8). Among these, 35% were based on measurements for nitrate (16% for THMs), 44% (46%) were predicted using on linear mixed models, and 21% (38%) were based on distribution unit median values. Conditional R2 predictive models ranged from 0.71 to 0.91 (median: 0.85) for nitrate, and from 0.48 to 0.80 for THMs (median: 0.68).These concentrations will allow future association analyses with risk of breast and colorectal cancer. Our cleaning process introduced here could be adapted to other large drinking water monitoring data.

The exposure analysis of the long-term broadband EMF monitoring in the campus area of the University of Novi Sad.

Due to wide prevalence of electromagnetic field (EMF) sources in human surrounding, EMF-level measurements and corresponding exposure assessment have imposed as an important topic. With an intention to present an approach to the long-term exposure assessment in EMF RATEL network, this paper conveys a high-level statistical analysis of the high-frequency exposure data, acquired during the 5-y time period, for the case study of monitoring sensor installed in the area of the Novi Sad University campus. Time series of exposure values were averaged on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis, and their yearly comparison was performed. Results showed clear differences between the day and night hours, as well between working and weekend days. Regarding exposure values, averaged on the monthly basis, the impact of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021 can be noticed. Finally, the highest obtained exposure values (electric field squared) were 22 times below the maximal allowable level, according to the Serbian legislation.

Radon Exposure Assessment in Occupational and Environmental Settings: An Overview of Instruments and Methods.

Radon is a naturally occurring noble radioactive gas that poses significant health risks, particularly lung cancer, due to its colorless, odorless, and tasteless nature, which makes detection challenging without formal testing. It is found in soil, rock, and water, and it infiltrates indoor environments, necessitating regulatory standards and guidelines from organizations such as the Environmental Protection Agency, the World Health Organization, and the Occupational Health and Safety Agency to mitigate exposure. In this paper, we present various methods and instruments for radon assessment in occupational and environmental settings. Discussion on long- and short-term monitoring, including grab sampling, radon dosimetry, and continuous real-time monitoring, is provided. The comparative analysis of detection techniques-active versus passive-is highlighted from real-time data and long-term exposure assessment, including advances in sensor technology, data processing, and public awareness, to improve radon exposure evaluation techniques.

Assessment of long-term dietary cadmium exposure in children in Germany: Does consideration of data from total diet studies reduce uncertainties from food monitoring programmes?

Total diet studies (TDS) and food monitoring programmes are different approaches for collecting occurrence data on substances in food. This case study evaluated the practical applicability of TDS data (BfR MEAL Study) and monitoring data for the assessment of long-term cadmium exposure in children in Germany. Cadmium data from both programmes were combined with food consumption data from the KiESEL study. Uncertainties associated with both assessments were systematically described. Using monitoring data resulted in cadmium intakes approximately 3 times higher than the use of BfR MEAL Study data. Incomplete data and neglect of market shares and consumption weights were considered by conservative data adjustments to the monitoring data and mainly explain the higher estimates. Fewer data adjustments were necessary for BfR MEAL Study data, which covered almost the entire diet and considered consumer behaviour during sample collection and sample preparation. In sum, the use of the BfR MEAL Study data resulted in less uncertainty and more reliable exposure estimates for chronic assessments over the entire diet. However, description of variability and upper tails of substance distributions in food remain essential features of monitoring data. The integration of both programmes into a complementary system further improves food safety.

Long-term exposure and health risk assessment from air pollution: impact of regional scale mobility

BackgroundThe negative effect of air pollution on human health is widely reported in recent literature. It typically involves urbanized areas where the population is concentrated and where most primary air pollutants are produced. A comprehensive health risk assessment is therefore of strategic importance for health authorities.MethodsIn this study we propose a methodology to perform an indirect and retrospective health risk assessment of all-cause mortality associated with long-term exposure to particulate matter less than 2.5 microns (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3) in a typical Monday to Friday working week. A combination of satellite-based settlement data, model-based air pollution data, land use, demographics and regional scale mobility, allowed to examine the effect of population mobility and pollutants daily variations on the health risk. A Health Risk Increase (HRI) metric was derived on the basis of three components: hazard, exposure and vulnerability, utilizing the relative risk values from the World Health Organization. An additional metric, the Health Burden (HB) was formulated, which accounts for the total number of people exposed to a certain risk level.ResultsThe effect of regional mobility patterns on the HRI metric was assessed, resulting in an increased HRI associated with all three stressors when considering a dynamic population compared to a static one. The effect of diurnal variation of pollutants was only observed for NO2 and O3. For both, the HRI metric resulted in significantly higher values during night. Concerning the HB parameter, we identified the commuting flows of the population as the main driver in the resulting metric.ConclusionsThis indirect exposure assessment methodology provides tools to support policy makers and health authorities in planning intervention and mitigation measures. The study was carried out in Lombardy, Italy, one of the most polluted regions in Europe, but the incorporation of satellite data makes our approach valuable for studying global health.

Integrating statistical and agent-based modelling for activity-based ambient air pollution exposure assessment

Assessment of long-term human exposure to spatiotemporally highly variable air pollution requires accounting for human space–time activity. Individual exposure and space–time track data are not available over large populations and for long periods and a modelling approach is required. However, activity-based exposure models face here challenges in setting up the model and overly-large computations. Aiming for long-term and large-population simulations, we propose an activity model which integrates statistical and agent-based modelling by treating mobility-related variables as random variables. Probability distributions for these variables are estimated or derived from mobility datasets containing observed activities. On top of the activity model, we implemented an exposure model. A case-study of exposure assessment was developed using hourly air pollution maps. The activity model can potentially integrate any mobility data and is thus applicable when limited time activity data is available at the individual level.

P034 Non-conventional alternatives to prevent Candida auris infections

Poster session 1, September 21, 2022, 12:30 PM - 1:30 PMObjectives Candida auris represents a particular organism associated with multiple nosocomial infections and high mortality rates. Appropriate infection control measures play a major role in controlling the spread and multiplication of this pathogen. Unfortunately, there are very few data available on the effectiveness of disinfectants against C. auris. Chlorine-based products appear to be the most effective for inanimate surface disinfection, while iodine-based products are more suitable for skin antisepsis. C. auris has been demonstrated to survive on dry and moist surfaces for up to 14 days, so environmental cleaning to eliminate a source of nosocomial infections is a challenge. Thus, searching for new effective fungicidal agents is still a hot topic nowadays. Non-thermal plasma-activated water (PAW) has recently emerged as a powerful antimicrobial agent, but no data about its effectiveness on C. auris are available. The aim of our study was to assess the possibility of using PAW as a fungicidal agent against C. auris planktonic cells.MethodsPAW was prepared using distilled water and a GlidArc reactor as previously described1. The final parameters of PAW were as follows: conductivity 446 ± 25 μS/cm, pH 2.78 ± 0.12, redox potential (ORP) + 1.06 V, NO2 192 ± 10 mg/L, NO3 1550 ± 95 mg/L, H2O2 2.6 ± 0.12 mg/L, and O3 1.08 ± 0.07 mg/L.A type strain of C. auris (CBS 10913) was used in this study. Suspensions of yeast cells (107 CFU/ml) were prepared from overnight cultures and subsequently treated with PAW in a ratio of 1:10 for different periods of time (1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, and 20 minutes). Precise volumes of the mixtures were further inoculated on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar plates and Bact/Alert FA Plus bottles (bioMerieux, France) in order to evaluate the reduction of yeast burden after each contact period. In addition, some instrumental analysis (IA) methods were used in order to assess the impact of PAW treatment on yeast cell structure: Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FT-IR), and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS). All tests were performed in triplicates.ResultsA reduction higher than 5 log10 of viable yeast was achieved in 3 minutes. The sterilization level (i.e., ˃6 log10 reduction) was achieved after 5 minutes for the tested strain. Approach to the Patient: Diagnosis of Cushing Syndrome.

Cushing syndrome results from supraphysiological exposure to glucocorticoids and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The pathogenesis includes administration of corticosteroids (exogenous Cushing syndrome) or autonomous cortisol overproduction, whether or not ACTH-dependent (endogenous Cushing syndrome). An early diagnosis of Cushing syndrome is warranted; however, in clinical practice, it is very challenging partly because of resemblance with other common conditions (ie, pseudo-Cushing syndrome). Initial workup should start with excluding local and systemic corticosteroid use. First-line screening tests including the 1-mg dexamethasone suppression test, 24-hour urinary free cortisol excretion, and late-night salivary cortisol measurement should be performed to screen for endogenous Cushing syndrome. Scalp-hair cortisol/cortisone analysis helps in the assessment of long-term glucocorticoid exposure as well as in detection of transient periods of hypercortisolism as observed in cyclical Cushing syndrome. Interpretation of results can be difficult because of individual patient characteristics and hence requires awareness of test limitations. Once endogenous Cushing syndrome is established, measurement of plasma ACTH concentrations differentiates between ACTH-dependent (80%-85%) or ACTH-independent (15%-20%) causes. Further assessment with different imaging modalities and dynamic biochemical testing including bilateral inferior petrosal sinus sampling helps further pinpoint the cause of Cushing's syndrome. In this issue of "Approach to the patient," the diagnostic workup of Cushing syndrome is discussed with answering the questions when to screen, how to screen, and how to differentiate the different causes. In this respect, the latest developments in biochemical and imaging techniques are discussed as well.

Occurrence and exposure risk assessment of pesticide residues in green tea samples cultivated in Hangzhou area, China

ABSTRACT The concentration of pesticide residues in 105 green tea samples grown in Hangzhou area were investigated. Of the 14 pesticides analysed using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and the 27 pesticides analysed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, only 18 were detected in the tea samples. The most frequently detected pesticide residues were imidacloprid (35.2%), acetamiprid (26.7%), carbendazim (21.0%), bifenthrin (21.0%), and cyhalothrin (19.1%). Carbofuran was the only pesticide which exceeded in one sample the maximum residue limit. The concentrations of the analytes in tea samples ranged from below the limit of detection (LOD) to 2.64 mg/kg. Their mean concentrations were all below the LOD, except for imidacloprid, acetamiprid, carbendazim, bifenthrin and cyhalothrin. Based on a preliminary long-term exposure assessment, the hazard quotient values of the detected pesticides varied in the range 0.47 × 10−3 − 1.1 × 10−3%, which indicates that these levels did not pose a risk to human health in Hangzhou area.

Evaluating nanobiomaterial-induced DNA strand breaks using the alkaline comet assay

Due to their unique chemical and physical properties, nanobiomaterials (NBMs) are extensively studied for applications in medicine and drug delivery. Despite these exciting properties, their small sizes also make them susceptible to toxicity. Whilst nanomaterial immunotoxicity and cytotoxicity are studied in great depth, there is still limited data on their potential genotoxicity or ability to cause DNA damage. In the past years, new medical device regulations, which came into place in 2020, were developed, which require the assessment of long-term NBM exposure; therefore, in recent years, increased attention is being paid to genotoxicity screening of these materials. In this article, and through an interlaboratory comparison (ILC) study conducted within the Horizon 2020 REFINE project, we assess five different NBM formulations, each with different uses, namely, a bio-persistent gold nanoparticle (AuNP), an IR-780 dye-loaded liposome which is used in deep tissue imaging (LipImage™815), an unloaded PACA polymeric nanoparticle used as a drug delivery system (PACA), and two loaded PACA NBMs, i.e. the cabazitaxel drug-loaded PACA (CBZ-PACA) and the NR668 dye-loaded PACA (NR668 PACA) for their potential to cause DNA strand breaks using the alkaline comet assay and discuss the current state of genotoxicity testing for nanomaterials. Whole Body Vibration Exposure Transmitted to Drivers of Heavy Equipment Vehicles: A Comparative Case According to the Short- and Long-Term Exposure Assessment Methodologies Defined in ISO 2631-1 and ISO 2631-5.

The construction and transport sectors are the industries with the highest proportions of workers exposed to vibrations in the European Union. Heavy equipment vehicle (HEV) drivers often perform operations on different uneven surfaces and are exposed to whole body vibration (WBV) on a daily basis. Recently, a new version of ISO 2631-5 was published. However, since this new method required as input the individual exposure profile and the acceleration signals recorded on more surfaces, limited studies have been carried out to evaluate HEV operations according to this standard. The objectives of this study were to assess the WBV exposure using the methods defined in ISO 2631-1:1997 and ISO 2631-5:2018 and to compare the obtained health risk assessments between drivers with different anthropometric characteristics. For this purpose, two drivers were selected and a field measurement campaign was conducted. Regarding short-term assessment, results showed that VDV was the most restrictive method with exposure levels above the exposure action limit value, while indicated that the same exposures were safe for the worker. With respect to long-term assessment, Risk Factor RA showed that the driver with the highest body mass index was the only one who exceeded the low probability limit of adverse health effects.

Investigation of Differences in Allostatic Load among Black Men by Level of Educational Attainment: High School Graduates Experience the Highest Levels of Stress.

Allostatic load (AL)—the biological assessment of long-term exposure to stress—may explain mortality-rate disparities among non-Hispanic Black (Black) men. We aimed to investigate AL among Black men with equivalent education status after controlling for income. A cross-sectional study was employed to investigate AL among 4113 Black men who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 1999–2018. A summation of 8 biomarker factors were used to compute AL, differences in socio-demographic characteristics by education status were evaluated, and health behaviors that may influence AL were examined. To determine the high-risk thresholds for each AL component, we examined each component’s distribution among NHB men for whom complete biomarker data were available in the NHANES sample. High-risk thresholds were determined as either (1) above the 75th percentile for body mass index (BMI), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), glycated hemoglobin, systolic blood pressure (SBP), total cholesterol, and serum triglycerides; or (2) below the 25th percentile for serum albumin and serum creatinine. Modified Poisson regression models were used to estimate prevalence ratios and their associated 95% confidence intervals for high AL risk while adjusting for potential confounders. Black men with a high school diploma/GED had a greater prevalence of high AL compared with Black men who had other levels of education, and a slightly higher prevalence of high AL compared with Black men who had less than a high school education. Black men with college degrees had a lower prevalence of high AL than Black men with the lowest levels of educational attainment. Researchers must further examine the hidden costs stemming from the interplay between discrimination associated with being Black in America and systemic racism in the educational system—which may be preventing Black men from achieving optimal health.

Validity of self-reported air pollution annoyance to assess long-term exposure to air pollutants in Belgium

In epidemiological studies, assessment of long term exposure to air pollution is often estimated using air pollution measurements at fixed monitoring stations, and interpolated to the residence of survey participants through Geographical Information Systems (GIS). However, obtaining georeferenced address data from national registries requires a long and cumbersome administrative procedure, since this kind of personal data is protected by privacy regulations. This paper aims to assess whether information collected in health interview surveys, including air pollution annoyance, could be used to build prediction models for assessing individual long term exposure to air pollution, removing the need for data on personal residence address.Analyses were carried out based on data from the Belgian Health Interview Survey (BHIS) 2013 linked to GIS-modelled air pollution exposure at the residence place of participants older than 15 years (n = 9347). First, univariate linear regressions were performed to assess the relationship between air pollution annoyance and modelled exposure to each air pollutant. Secondly, a multivariable linear regression was performed for each air pollutant based on a set of variables selected with elastic net cross-validation, including variables related to environmental annoyance, socio-economic and health status of participants. Finally, the performance of the models to classify individuals in three levels of exposure was assessed by means of a confusion matrix.Our results suggest a limited validity of self-reported air pollution annoyance as a direct proxy for air pollution exposure and a weak contribution of environmental annoyance variables in prediction models. Models using variables related to the socio-economic status, region, urban level and environmental annoyance allow to predict individual air pollution exposure with a percentage of error ranging from 8% to 18%. Although these models do not provide very accurate predictions in terms of absolute exposure to air pollution, they do allow to classify individuals in groups of relative exposure levels, ranking participants from low over medium to high air pollution exposure. This model represents a rapid assessment tool to identify groups within the BHIS participants undergoing the highest levels of environmental stress.

Collection of occurrence data in foods - The value of the BfR MEAL study in addition to the national monitoring for dietary exposure assessment.

Two different data sets of occurrence data are available in Germany at present: the German National Food Monitoring and the BfR MEAL Study. To determine the suitability of each data set for exposure assessment and to develop concepts for a target-oriented selection and application of data, possibilities, limitations and scope of substance as well as food selection is quantitatively compared. The National Monitoring data provides comprehensive information on the variability of substance levels. This enables short- and long-term exposure assessment and consumer-loyal scenarios. The BfR MEAL Study supplements the monitoring data set with>100 substances or by complementing the food spectrum for substances already included in the National Monitoring. The study design benefits especially the long-term dietary exposure assessment for the German population including the total diet. Using both programmes enables case-dependent selection of the appropriate dataset and in combination both sets can contribute to enhanced consumer safety.

Toxicity Assessment of Long-Term Exposure to Non-Thermal Plasma Activated Water in Mice.

Non-thermal plasma activated water (PAW) has recently emerged as a powerful antimicrobial agent. Despite numerous potential bio-medical applications, studies concerning toxicity in live animals, especially after long-term exposure, are scarce. Our study aimed to assess the effects of long-term watering with PAW on the health of CD1 mice. PAW was prepared from distilled water with a GlidArc reactor according to a previously published protocol. The pH was 2.78. The mice received PAW (experimental group) or tap water (control group) daily for 90 days as the sole water source. After 90 days, the following investigations were performed on the euthanatized animals: gross necropsy, teeth mineral composition, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, hematology, blood biochemistry, methemoglobin level and cytokine profile. Mice tolerated PAW very well and no adverse effects were observed during the entire period of the experiment. Histopathological examination of the organs and tissues did not reveal any structural changes. Moreover, the expression of proliferation markers PCNA and Ki67 has not been identified in the epithelium of the upper digestive tract, indicating the absence of any pre- or neoplastic transformations. The results of our study demonstrated that long-term exposure to PAW caused no toxic effects and could be used as oral antiseptic solution in dental medicine.

A methodology for assessment of long-term exposure to whole-body vibrations in vehicle drivers to propose preventive safety measures

Introduction: The appearance of musculoskeletal disorders (MDs) in professional drivers due to exposition to whole-body vibration (WBV) makes it relevant to assess this exposure. The European Directive 2002/44/EC has two methods to evaluate exposure to WBV (defined in ISO2631-1:2008). These methods evaluate the exposure associated with an 8-hour working day; however, MDs due to WBV could also be caused by accumulated exposure to vibrations over long term, and hence, the methods defined in the European directive may be limited in their ability to ensure the safety of workers exposed to WBV throughout their years of employment. Method: A detailed comparison and discussion of methods defined in the European Directive and the ISO2631-5:2018 was used as a starting point of the main results of this paper. On this basis, a new methodology for the management and organization of preventive measures is proposed to consider the assessment of ISO2631-5:2018 standard and the full working life of workers. Experimental data to assess exposure to WBV in heavy equipment vehicle (HEV) drivers under different road surface conditions and range of velocities were considered to illustrate the process of the proposed methodology. Results: The methods defined in the standards provide different assessments leading to a different possible consideration of safe operations when the risks associated with them may actually be high. The proposed methodology can be used with the aim of ensuring safety of workers throughout their working lives and providing an easy implementation of the calculations of ISO2631-5:2018 standard. Conclusions: A procedure to assess the health risk probability to which the HEV worker is exposed in terms of the exposure years and a different range of operational vehicle speeds is proposed and exemplified with a study case. Practical applications: This study provides a practical tool for the management of WBV exposure related to work-tasks in HEV drivers. Safety managers should consider the global exposition to WBV throughout their working life, and this research provides an easy tool to accomplish it.

A health impact assessment of long-term exposure to particulate air pollution in Thailand

Particulate air pollution causes a spectrum of adverse health effects affecting the respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, and metabolic systems that are hypothesised to be driven by inflammation and oxidative stress. Millions of premature deaths each year are attributed to exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM). We quantified health and economic impacts from long-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 in the population of Thailand for 2016. We collected data on ambient PM2.5 concentrations from automatic monitoring stations across Thailand over 1996–2016. We used historic exposure to PM2.5 to estimate the mortality in each province from lower respiratory infections (LRIs), stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and ischaemic heart disease, and also assessed diabetes mortality, as well as incident cases of dementia and Parkinson’s disease, in supplementary analyses. We applied risk estimates from the Global Exposure Mortality Model to calculate attributable mortality and quantify disability-adjusted life years (DALYs); we based economic costs on the value of a statistical life (VSL). We calculated 50 019 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 42 189–57 849) deaths and 508 918 (95% CI: 438 345–579 492) DALYs in 2016 attributed to long-term PM2.5 exposure in Thailand. Population attributable fractions ranged from 20% (95% CI: 10% to 29%) for stroke to 48% (95% CI: 27% to 63%) for LRIs. Based on the VSL, we calculated a cost of US$ 60.9 billion (95% CI: US$ 51.3–70.4 billion), which represents nearly 15% of Thailand’s gross domestic product in 2016. While progress has been made to reduce exposure to ambient PM2.5 in Thailand, continued reductions based on stricter regulatory limits for PM2.5 and other air pollutants would help prolong life, and delay, or prevent, onset of cardiorespiratory and other diseases.

Plasma Proteins As Biodosimetric Markers of Low-Dose Radiation in Mice.

Long-term exposures to low-dose radiation (LDR) may trigger several specific biological responses, including dysregulation of the immune and inflammatory systems. Here, we examined whether biodosimetry of LDR can be used to protect tissues from radiation or assess cancer risk. Mice were subjected to gamma-irradiation with repeated or single-dose LDR, and then the organ indices, peripheral hemogram, and blood biochemistry were analyzed. An antibody array was applied followed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to evaluate the utility of multiple plasma proteins as biomarkers of repeated LDR in a murine model. LDR induced inapparent symptoms but slight variations in peripheral blood cell counts and alterations in blood biochemical indicator levels. Specific plasma proteins in the LDR groups were altered in response to a higher dose of irradiation at the same time points or a single-dose equivalent to the same total dose. Plasma levels of interleukin (IL)-5, IL-12p40, P-selectin, and serum amyloid A1 were associated with the LDR dose and thus may be useful as dosimetric predictors of LDR in mice. Estimating the levels of certain plasma proteins may yield promising biodosimetry parameters to accurately identify individuals exposed to LDR, facilitating risk assessment of long-term LDR exposure in individuals.

Use of food consumption data of food balance sheets and national food consumption surveys in deterministic long-term dietary exposure assessments of pesticides

Deterministic long-term dietary exposure estimates of pesticide residues across different countries are called International Estimated Daily Intakes (IEDIs). Effect of using Food Balance Sheets (FBS) or National Food Consumption Surveys (NFCS) to calculate the IEDI was investigated. Presence of aggregated foods tended to increase the IEDI, and clustering of data from countries with comparable dietary patterns tended to decrease the IEDI. Furthermore, IEDIs for global use were not always at least as conservative as those for regional or national use. Risk assessors using these data should be aware of these limitations. As FBS data are only available for the general population and IEDIs are highest for children, a method was developed to convert FBS based IEDIs to indicative IEDIs for children. This may be appropriate if no NFCS data are available for this age group and the critical health-based guidance value is relevant for this age group.
