The assessment of bacterial contamination in bottled drinking water products in Dak Lak province in 2023 and its related factors

The cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at 65 bottled drink water product production facilities in Dak Lak province in 2023. The objectives were to determine the prevalence of bacterial contamination in bottled drinking water products at some production facilities in Dak Lak province and analyze related factors. The results indicated that 42/65 (64,0%) of samples did not meet the bacterial requirements according to QCVN 6-1:2010/BYT. Unsatisfactory bacterial criteria included Coliform (50.5%), P. aeruginosa (50.5%), and Clostridia (4.6%). All samples were not detected for E. coli and Streptococci feacal. The main factors influencing bacterial contamination of bottled drinking water were the layout design of the production area; factory structure, means of washing and disinfecting hands, sanitary conditions of the jar, practice of personal hygiene, practice cleaning the jar, and practice of packaging the products.

Assessment of Bacterial Contamination in Drinking water of Schools of Tokha Municipality, Kathmandu

Assessment of drinking water quality is being crucial especially in school institutions since children spend most of the time in school premises. The aim of this study was to assess bacterial contamination of the selected schools of Tokha Municipality. Total of 17 water samples from Ward 1, 2 and 3 were sampled and membrane filtration (MF) technique was used to analyses total coliform and fecal coliform incubated for 37 °C and 44 °C respectively. Multiple drinking water sources were found in the study area such as natural springs, piped-line system, bottled water and private wells. Almost all of the water samples exceeded WHO guideline and National Drinking Water Standards which implied none of the water samples are safe for drinking. Very few schools were found to adopt purification measures while other used to supply directly. Water samples of school were even not tested once in many schools for microbial analysis. Therefore, school management need to be responsible in coming days to ensure safe drinking water not just for children, for the wellbeing of the society and Nation.

Assessment of Bacterial Contamination in Drinking Water Sources in Khartoum/ Sudan

Aim of the Study: To assess the bacterial contamination in drinking water sources in Khartoum/ Sudan.
 Place of Study: Central Veterinary Research Laboratory/ Bacteriology Department.
 Study Design: One hundred water samples were collected from the three localities of Khartoum state (Khartoum= 33, Omdurman= 34, Khartoum north [Bahri] =25) and 8 from different companies of water supply.
 Methodology: Fifty four Samples were collected from surface water and (38) from ground water [well]. These samples transported to bacteriology lab for microbiological analyses using filtration method and new technique Colilert and Pseudalert kits which used for the first time in Sudan.
 Results: Filtration method revealed different bacterial species, they were: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter aerogene Enterobacter sakazaki, Enterobacter cloacae, Serratia marinoruba, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella spp. Raoultella terrigena\planticola, Orchobacter anthrobi, Cronobater spp., Aeromonas salmonicida, Aeromonas hydrophilia, Pantoea agglomerans, Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Coliform bacteria, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas app were detected and most probable numbers (MPN) were counted using the previous kits according to manufacture instructions.
 Conclusion: The water must be tested before using and quality control technique must be achievable to ensure continuously supply of pure drinking water.

Assessment of Bacterial Contamination of Orthodontic Arch wire

Background: The microorganisms can impend the life of health care professional and particularly the dental practitioners. They can be transmitted by different ways like airborne and droplet transmission. The current study was carried out to identify whether the arch wires that received from the manufactures are free from microbial contamination and to determine the bacterial species attached to the arch wires. Materials and Methods: This study involved eighty samples, consisted of two types of arch wires (nitinol and stainless-steel) from four companies (3M, G&H, Jiscop, OrthoTechnology). These wires inserted in a plane tube that contains 10 -ml of (Tris [tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane] and EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) tris-EDTA and brain heart infusion (BHI) broth. A 0.1 ml was withdrawn from the tube and spread on agar plates. The control groups consist of 16 plane tube (8 tubes with tris-EDTA and other 8 tubes with (BHI). Results: Microbial sampling yielded growth from 5 of the 80 arch wires. The predominant bacteria that isolated were Bacillus spp. No growth was recovered from 75 of the samples and from controls. The bacteria were isolated by BHI reagent and no growth was observed by tris-EDTA reagent with statistically significant difference (P<0.05). The Bacillus spp. found only in the G&H and Jiscop companies, however, no statistically significant difference was found among them (P>0.05). With regard to the presence and distribution of bacteria according to the types of wires, the present results clarified that cases of contamination with Bacillus spp. were found in the nitinol arch wires with statistically significant difference (P<0.05). Conclusions: The results of the current study revealed low count of bacterial contamination in the two types of companies (G&H and Jiscop). Not all materials that received from the manufactures are free from contamination and an effective sterilization regimen is needed to avoid cross-contamination.

Assessment of the effect of suture material on the bacterial contamination of trachea

The work is devoted to assessment of bacterial contamination of trachea after circular resection with the following tracheo-tracheal anastomosis in Wistar rats. The formation of tracheo-tracheal anastomosis with the use of a monofilament, not resorptive suture material after circular resection of trachea is accompanied by the microbial growth in 83.4% of cases. The major microorganisms are conditionally pathogenic – Citrobacter freundii, Staphilococcus epidermidis, Proteus rettgeri, Escherichiae coli, they occur in 71% of cases. Pathogenic microorganisms Staphilococcus aureus, Candida fungi appeared only in microbial associations and were found in 12.5% of cases. No microbial growth was observed in 16.6%.

Functionalized polyurethane applied for foodborne pathogen detection

Fast monitoring and control quality of food products become increasingly important for public health. Among foodborne pathogenic microorganisms, bacteria are the most common foodborne pathogens in which the currently used methods are time consuming, labour-intensive and costly. This work aims to develop a new biochip potentially used for an assessment of bacterial contamination on food product. An assessment for bacterial detection employs simple FTIR spectroscopic analysis with a complimentary surface characterization by SEM technique. The biochip based on carboxylic acid functionalized polyurethane (PU) film was synthesized for bacterial detection in particular Salmonella Typhimurium. The PU in this study was synthesized from the reaction of the alcohol groups of hydroxyl telechelic natural rubber based oligomer with the isocyanate groups of 2,4-toluene diisocyanate. The carboxylic acid functional group was incorporated into the PU chain by addition of dimethylol propionic acid as a chain extender during PU preparation. The PU film having different degree of carboxylic acid was explored for the detection of S. Typhimurium. The structural and morphological changes of the PU film after loading of the bacteria were successfully detected using ATR-FTIR and SEM, respectively. The PU film developed is considered a rapid tool for S. Typhimurium detection and has a potential application for rapid food control quality.

Contamination of Examination Gloves in patient Rooms and Implications for Transmission of Antimicrobial-Resistant Microorganisms

An assessment of bacterial contamination on examination gloves indicated that contaminated gloves may be a mechanism of indirect bacterial transmission from the hands of healthcare workers to patients. This mechanism is indicated by the recovery of identical Acinetobacter baumannii isolates from gloves and from the clinical cultures of a patient with invasive infection.
