Longitudinal associations between family functioning and generalized anxiety among adolescents: the mediating role of self-identity and cognitive flexibility

BackgroundGeneralized anxiety (GA) is showing a high prevalence among adolescents nowadays; investigations on influencing factors and potential mechanisms are important to inform intervention development. The present two-wave study investigated the ways in which family functioning predicted GA six months later among adolescents, by considering the mediating role of self-identity and cognitive flexibility.MethodsAdolescents were recruited from 27 randomly selected classes in two secondary schools in Chongqing and Fujian Province, China. Survey questionnaires assessing family functioning, self-identity, cognitive flexibility and GA were obtained from 1223 adolescents (Mage = 13.14, SD = 1.35) at two time points of the 6-month interval.ResultsThe association between family functioning (T1) and GA (T2) was significant (r= -0.152, p < 0.01). Self-identity and cognitive flexibility sequentially mediated the relationship between family functioning (T1) and GA (T2) (with the indirect effect = -0.005, 95% CI = -0.007~ -0.002) after controlling for age, gender, and GA at baseline. Cognitive flexibility also showed a significant and direct mediating effect (with the indirect effect = -0.008, 95% CI = -0.012 ~ -0.005).ConclusionFindings indicated that family functioning can be a protective factor of GA, and self-identity and cognitive flexibility act as a crucial role in the association between family functioning and GA. Future studies should adopt more time points and long-term follow-up assessments using more robust approaches to improve the reliability of the study findings. Findings may offer some implications that building a harmonious, open and warm family and guiding adolescents to develop self-identity as well as more flexible cognitive style could be helpful to prevent and cope with anxious emotion.

The Relationships Among Family Functioning, Sleep Quality and Quality of Life in Chinese Community-Dwelling Older Adults with Insomnia: A Structural Equation Model

ABSTRACT Objectives The proportion of individuals with insomnia is increasing, and many older adults have insomnia. This study aimed to explore the relationships between family functioning and quality of life (QOL) among community-dwelling older adults with insomnia, as well as to explore the mediating role of sleep quality in this relationship. Methods The participants were 225 older adults with insomnia from community health service centers in Chongqing, China. The Family Care Index (APGAR) was used to assess family functioning, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality, and the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) was used to assess QOL. Results The results showed that family functioning would be positively associated with QOL (p = .005) and that this relationship would be partially mediated by higher sleep quality (p < .001). Conclusions Family functioning has a direct effect on QOL and an indirect effect on QOL through the regulation of sleep quality. Maintaining good family functioning is important for improving sleep quality and QOL in older adults with insomnia. Clinical Implications Developing family functioning-based assessments and targeted intervention strategies could be beneficial for older adults with insomnia.

Measurement Equivalence Test on Family Cohesion Scale: Comparison Models for White, Black, Hispanic, and Asian College or University Students in the U.S.

Cohesion measure launched from the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES) is a well-known instrument to assess family functioning. It is essential to perform a measurement equivalence test of cohesion targeting racially diverse families. The web-based self-administered survey was performed and 291 college/university students’ responses in Ohio were collected (Whites = 37.5%, Hispanics = 23%, Asians = 23%, and Blacks = 16.5%). This study explicated measurement equivalence for family cohesion structure (balanced cohesion, disengagement, enmeshed). The multiple group analysis was performed to investigate whether parameters in the measurement models of the “cohesion sub-structures (balanced cohesion, disengagement, enmeshed; 7 items of each)” were equivalent across the four racial groups. While “balanced cohesion” and “disengagement” structures showed measurement invariance across the groups, the “enmeshed” structure showed significant measurement variance across the groups. Two-items, “Family members feel pressured to spend most free time together” and “We feel too connected to each other” were inadequate for Hispanics’ enmeshment. One-item, “Family members have little need for friends outside the family” was inadequate to explain enmeshment of Blacks and Asians. Professionals should be aware of possible misinterpretations of results from the cohesion measure of FACES IV when they particularly assess the enmeshment status of racially diverse families with closer attention to cross-cultural comparability.

Pain intensity and self-perceived burden mediate the relationship between family functioning and pain catastrophizing in patients with neuropathic pain.

This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationship between family functioning, pain intensity, self-perceived burden, and pain catastrophizing. Moreover, we also wanted to explore the multiple mediating roles of pain intensity and self-perceived burden. From October 2022 to March 2023, 252 Chinese people with neuropathic pain completed face-to-face questionnaires to assess family functioning, pain intensity, self-perceived burden, and pain catastrophizing. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics and a structural equation model. The results showed better family functioning was significantly associated with more intense pain, less self-perceived burden, and less pain catastrophizing. Mediation analysis showed that family functioning could indirectly affect pain catastrophizing through pain intensity and self-perceived burden in addition to a direct effect on pain catastrophizing. Moreover, the mediating variable of pain intensity played a masking role. These findings suggest that good family functioning can effectively reduce the self-perceived burden and pain catastrophizing in patients with neuropathic pain. However, family functioning cannot show its maximum effectiveness, and it may be necessary to construct a model of family functioning suitable for patients with neuropathic pain in the future.

Psychometric properties of the Chinese Family Assessment Instrument: evidence from mainland China.

Regarding the assessment of family functioning in Chinese people, there are several research gaps. First, although there are some instruments in the field, there are very few validated instruments. Second, while some translated measures have been developed, there are very few assessment tools based on indigenous Chinese concepts. Third, compared to Hong Kong, research on family assessment is relatively inactive in mainland China. Fourth, there are very few family assessment tools to assess perceived family functioning in older children and early adolescents. Fifth, few studies used large samples to validate family assessment tools. Sixth, researchers seldom utilized longitudinal data to examine the psychometric properties of family assessment tools. Finally, few studies have examined factorial validity across samples and time to demonstrate the stability of Chinese family assessment measures. In Hong Kong, based on focus group data (i.e., indigenous concepts of family functioning) and an integration with the family science literature, we have developed the Chinese Family Assessment Instrument (C-FAI) to assess perceived family functioning according to the perception of adolescents. Results showed that the C-FAI possessed good reliability and validity. Specifically, five dimensions of the measure (mutuality, communication, conflict, parental concern and parental control) were supported via exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. Convergent validity and reliability of the C-FAI were illustrated. To understand the psychometric properties of the C-FAI in mainland China, we collected three waves of data from students in the period of preadolescence and early adolescence in mainland China (N = 3,732). Based on the data, we examined the psychometric properties of the measure, particularly factor invariance in different samples and at different times. Confirmatory factor analysis provided support for the five dimensions in C-FAI, including factorial invariance in terms of configuration, factor loading, intercepts, and over time. There was evidence for convergent validity and discriminant validity of the measure. Finally, reliability analyses showed that the total C-FAI scale and its subscales are internally consistent. The present findings suggest that family researchers and practitioners can use the C-FAI to objectively assess perceived family functioning in preadolescence and early adolescence in different Chinese communities.

Translation, Cultural Adaptation, and Psychometric Validation of the European Portuguese Version of the Iceland-Expressive Family Functioning Questionnaire (ICE-EFFQ).

A family's experience of mental illness can change the family's functioning. In clinical contexts, valid and reliable instruments that assess family functioning, therapeutic changes, and the effects of family nursing interventions are needed. This study focuses on the linguistic and cultural adaptation of the Iceland-Expressive Family Functioning Questionnaire (ICE-EFFQ) to European Portuguese and examines the psychometric properties of this instrument. A non-random sample of 121 Portuguese depressed patients and their relatives completed the questionnaire. Principal components analysis extracted 4 factors, explaining 55.58% of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed acceptable adjustment quality indices. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was adequate for the global scale α = .86 and for the 4 subscales: communication α = .79, expression of emotions α = .68, problem-solving α = .71, and cooperation α = .61. The Portuguese version of ICE-EFFQ is a sensitive, valid, and reliable instrument for use with Portuguese families with adult members with depression and can be valuable in assessing these families' expressive functioning, before and after intervention.

Perceived family functioning within Chinese pregnant women and husband dyads: Levels, consistency, and correlates.

Understanding differences in perceived family functioning between pregnant women and their partners can protect and promote women's health. The purpose of this study was to examine consistency and differences in perceived family functioning within pregnant woman-partner dyads in China and explore correlates of effective family functioning. From 2020 to 2021, 175 pregnant women and husband dyads (100% Han nationality, Mage = 30.3 [4.5] years) were recruited from the women's psychological clinic of Changsha Hospital for Maternal & Child Health Care using convenience sampling. We assessed family functioning and depression and anxiety symptoms. We examined consistency and differences in perceived family functioning between pregnant women and their husbands. Most pregnant women (76.6%) and husbands (71.4%) perceived their family functioning as effective. Pregnant women and their husbands shared poor consistency in family functioning, with an intraclass correlation of 0.25 and most weighted kappa coefficients of individual items < 0.2. Participants reporting effective family functioning had higher education levels and lower depression and anxiety scores. Most pregnant women and their partners perceived effective family functioning, but showed poor consistency. Higher education and milder symptoms of depression and anxiety were associated with effective family functioning both in pregnant women and their partners. For primary healthcare system workers, differences in perceptions of family functioning should be fully taken into account when conducting family based integrated care for pregnant women. Assessment of family functioning in adolescents who use substances- a cross-sectional comparative study

ABSTRACT This study aimed to assess family functioning in adolescents who used substances and to compare them with families of healthy adolescents. This was a cross-sectional comparative study conducted on a total of 80 adolescent-parent dyads, selected from a clinical population by purposive sampling. Confidential interviews were conducted for both separately and included the semi-structured proforma for sociodemographic details of the family, the Modified MINI Screen to rule out mental illness in parents and Family Assessment Device. Responses were recorded and analysed using SPSS v26.0. The most common substances used by adolescents were tobacco, cannabis and opioids. Groups were matched for adolescent age, family structure and socio-economic status. Group A adolescents (substance users) perceived significantly greater problems in family functioning compared to their parents and group B (healthy) adolescents (p < 0.05). Parents of substance users perceived significantly greater problems in various domains of family functioning as compared to parents of non-users. Problem solving, communication, affective involvement and general functioning were major domains in which parents and adolescents differed, both between groups and within the same group. There were significant differences in family functioning of substance using and non-using adolescents. There is a need for larger systematic studies to understand the specific risk and protective factors in the context of substance use among Indian adolescents.

Psychological Resilience of Chinese College Students: A Cross-Sectional Study after the Deblocking of China's COVID-19 Pandemic Strategy.

Psychological resilience (PR) plays an important role in fortifying mental health during pandemics. This study aimed to examine the PR and its related factors of college students in China after the deblocking of the China's COVID-19 pandemic strategy. A total of 1100 college students from 15 universities participated in this cross-sectional survey by multi-stage stratified sampling. Data were collected by self-designed socio-demographic information, the family function assessment scale (APGAR), a general health questionnaire (GHQ-12), the general self-efficacy scale (GSES), and a psychological resilience scale. The average score of PR was 135.65 ± 18.54. Cluster analysis of PR scores showed that 24.9% of the college students had weak PR. The higher PR, the higher mental health status (r = 0.352, p < 0.05). Females had higher PR than males (OR = 0.550, 95% CI: 0.367-0.827). High self-efficacy was an independent protective factor of high PR (OR = 0.093, 95% CI: 0.059-0.145). Low family contact frequency, poor family function, and bad mental health status were the independent risk factors of high PR. In conclusion, the PR of Chinese college students were insufficient after the deblocking of China's COVID-19 pandemic strategy, indicating an improvement of PR should be put into practice immediately. Frequent monthly contact with family, family function, self-efficacy, mental health status, and gender were the influencing factors of PR, which provides an intervention strategy for the future.

The evaluation of emotional maltreatment's effect on family dynamics and suicidal behaviors

BackgroundEmotional maltreatment and poor family functioning are known risks for youth suicide, but few studies have examined these issues as prospective predictors of future attempts. ObjectivesExamine family functioning and suicide risk associated with emotional maltreatment in youth with a lifetime history of major depressive disorder (MDD) and the prospective association of emotional maltreatment and family functioning with future suicide attempts. Participants and settingParticipants included 321 youth aged 12–15 years (251 with emotional maltreatment; 70 with no emotional maltreatment) recruited from a metropolitan children's hospital from 2011 to 2018. Prospective analyses included 280 youths (221 with emotional maltreatment; 59 without emotional maltreatment). MethodsSemi-structured interviews and self-reports assessed family functioning and suicidal thoughts and behaviors in youth with and without emotional maltreatment at baseline, 6-month, 1-year, and 2-year follow-up. Multivariate analyses examined whether emotional maltreatment predicted future suicide attempts, beyond the effect of prior suicide attempts. ResultsEmotionally maltreated youth reported significantly lower scores for family adaptability, cohesion, and family alliance, and higher rates of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, compared to youth without emotional maltreatment. Youth experiencing multiple forms of abuse were significantly more likely to attempt suicide at future timepoints, however this association was attenuated after controlling for prior suicide attempts. ConclusionYouth who experienced emotional maltreatment had a significantly higher percentage of past suicidal thoughts and behaviors and significantly less favorable scores for family functioning associated with an increased suicide risk. Findings support family-focused suicide prevention strategies as a promising approach to reduce youth suicide.

University Students’ Internet Addiction and the Relationship Between Online Gaming and Family Function in Karachi, Pakistan

Internet addiction in the student population is a chronic social issue in Pakistan. Parental supervision is required to counter the issue. This study identifies an association between online gaming disorder and family functions by studying university students in Karachi, Pakistan. It is a cross-sectional study and 350 university students were selected through a multi-stage stratified sampling technique. A validated and structured questionnaire assessed family functioning and internet addiction. Data was analyzed using a multivariate logistic regression to identify associations between family function and online gaming disorders. In total, 66 per cent of students were found to be addicted to videogames and 39 per cent of students were deficient in their role in the family. The decreased problem solving skills (Adjusted Odd Ratio AOR 2.02, 95 per cent CI 1.35-5.96, p-value 0.002), decreased roles in the family (AOR 2.99, 95 per cent CI 1.23-5.75, p-value 0.004) and bad communication skills (AOR 0.91, 95 per cent CI 0.59-2.94, p-value 0.567) were associated with severe online gaming disorder. This study reveals a strong association between disrupted family functions and internet addiction and provides new evidence on the complex interaction between individuals and interpersonal risk factors involved in addiction among young adults. The Impact of Family Functioning on Help-Seeking Behavior and Symptom Severity in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Poor family functioning is associated with higher symptom severity in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and delayed help-seeking behavior in other forms of psychopathology. However, little is known about the impact of family functioning on help-seeking behavior and symptom severity in adults with OCD. The present study investigated the association between family functioning and both treatment delay and symptom severity in adults with obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Participants were 194 adults who self-identified as having OCD and completed an internet survey, including measures assessing family functioning, obsessive-compulsive symptom severity, help-seeking behavior, and depression symptom severity. Poorer family functioning was associated with higher obsessive-compulsive and depression symptom severity, after controlling for significant demographic variables. With respect to domains of family functioning, poorer general functioning, problem solving, communication skills, role functioning, affective involvement, and affective responsiveness were associated with higher obsessive-compulsive and depression symptom severity, after controlling for demographics. Poorer problem solving and communication were not significantly associated with treatment delay after controlling for demographics. Findings highlight the need for family intervention within the treatment framework for adult OCD and suggest targets ( e.g. , communication) to be addressed.

Cancer patient and caregiver communication about economic concerns and the effect on patient and caregiver partners' perceptions of family functioning.

Financial strain and stressful life events can constrain open communication within families. A cancer diagnosis can bring heightened emotional stress and financial strain for most cancer patients and their families. We evaluated how level of comfort and willingness to discuss important but sensitive economic topics affected longitudinal assessments of family relationships, exploring both within-person and between partner effects over 2years after a cancer diagnosis. A case series of hematological cancer patient-caregiver dyads (n = 171) were recruited from oncology clinics in Virginia and Pennsylvania and followed for 2years. Multi-level models were developed to examine the associations between comfort discussing economic aspects of cancer care and family functioning. Broadly, caregivers and patients who were comfortable discussing economic topics reported higher family cohesion and lower family conflict. Dyads' assessments of family functioning were influenced both by their own and their partners level of communication comfort. Overtime, caregiver but not patients perceived a significant decrease in family cohesion. Efforts to address financial toxicity in cancer care should include examination of how patients and families communicate as unaddressed difficulties can have detrimental effects on family functioning in the long term. Future studies should also examine whether the prominence of specific economic topics, such as employment status, varies depending on where the patient is in their cancer journey. In this sample, cancer patients did not perceive the decline in family cohesion that was reported by their family caregiver. This is an important finding for future work that aims to identify the timing and nature to best intervene with caregiver supports to mitigate caregiver burden that may negatively impact long-term patient care and QoL.

Development of marital adjustment and family functioning scale: a reliability and validity study

Aim: We aimed to develop a novel, comprehensive scale to assess family functioning and marital adjustment. Methods: We attempted to develop the Marital Adjustment and Family Functioning Scale with randomly selected 361 married participants without dementia and mental retardation. While calculating the internal consistency coefficient and deploying the test-retest method to ensure the reliability of the scale, we resorted to the factor analysis and criterion-related validity methods to seek its validity. The Marital Adjustment Test (MAT) and the Family Assessment Device (FAD) were utilized to ensure the criterion validity of the scale. Results: The findings revealed the internal consistency coefficient of the scale to be 0.974. Following the test-retest study with 20 participants, we calculated the correlations between two measurements with the MAFFS test to be 0.951. Finally, we calculated the correlation coefficients between the MAFFS and the FAD and the MAT to be 0.704 and 0.775, respectively. Conclusion: The first subscale is called the �family functioning and adjustment� since the items were oriented to assess general functions and adjustment in the family. The second subscale includes the items oriented to confidence-loyalty-violence; therefore, it is called �confidence-loyalty-violence.� Finally, the third subscale is referred to as �marital dysphoria� since it attempts to assess dysphoric issues within the family. Overall, the whole scale is deemed appropriate to be called the �Berksun-S�ylemez-Kayac�k (BSK) Marital Assessment Scale.�

Family functioning and personal growth in Italian caregivers living with a family member affected by schizophrenia: Results of an add-on study of the Italian network for research on psychoses.

To date, the role of family members in caring for relatives affected by schizophrenia has focused largely on the negative aspects of impact of the illness. The present study aimed to: (1) assess family functioning and burden of care in caregivers living in Northern, Central, and Southern Italy who looked after subjects affected by chronic schizophrenia; (2) evaluate the relationship between aspects of family functioning and burden of care, in particular personal growth (PG) of caregivers; and (3) identify variables capable of affecting PG of caregivers. A total of 136 caregivers (mean length of illness of family member more than 20 years) were recruited from 9 Italian research sites and evaluated in terms of "positive" family functioning-problem-solving, communication skills and personal goals Family Functioning Questionnaire (FFQ), burden of care, and PG Family Problems Questionnaire (FPQ). Caregivers reported an overall good family functioning with a relatively low objective and subjective burden of care. The latter was positively correlated with length of illness, with women showing a higher subjective burden than men. Reduced problem-solving skills and ability of each family member to pursue personal goals were both associated with reduced objective and subjective burden which, conversely, were both increased by inadequate support and scarce positive comments from relatives and friends. Approximately 50% of caregivers stated that "they had learned something positive from the situation," highlighting a statistically higher proportion of caregivers in southern Italy than in northern and central Italy. Caregivers' PG was associated with good family functioning, adequate professional support, and positive comments. PG also seemed to be positively influenced by support from relatives and friends (O.R. 14.306). The numerous challenges and positive aspects associated with caregiving should be duly acknowledged by mental health services and integrated into routine clinical assessment and intervention framework.

Disparities in healthcare utilization and depression among young mothers: The role of family functioning.

Extant research suggests that disparities in healthcare utilization and experiences of mental health disorders such as depression exist across sociodemographic groups. One understudied pathway that may have significant implications for these disparities is the role of family functioning. How families interact, communicate, and adapt may vary, but these relationships remain integral for vulnerable subsets of the population due to their seemingly protective properties. Yet, few studies have examined the relationship between family functioning and health. The aim of this study was to explore family functioning as a predictor for healthcare utilization and depression among young mothers and as a moderator of disparities for each of these outcomes. This analysis uses data from a prospective cohort study which was conducted with 296 pregnant young women recruited from obstetrics clinics in Connecticut between July 2007 and February 2011 and followed 1-year postpartum. Logistic regression models were used to assess family functioning, race/ethnicity, and immigrant status as predictors of healthcare utilization and depression. Family functioning was evaluated as a moderator for both outcomes. Black and Latina mothers had decreased odds of using physical healthcare services (odds ratioBlack = 0.13, p < 0.001; odds ratioLatina = 0.31, p = 0.02). Family functioning was associated with decreased odds of using mental healthcare services (odds ratio = 0.97, p = 0.04) and had a protective effect against depression (odds ratio = 0.96, p = 0.003). Family functioning significantly moderated the relationship between immigrant status and physical healthcare utilization, Black race/ethnicity and physical healthcare utilization, and Other race/ethnicity and depression. Family functioning is a significant factor associated with both healthcare utilization and depression among young mothers. It should be a strongly considered component within healthcare settings to mitigate risks among vulnerable populations.

The Effects of Child and Adolescent Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder and Associated Executive Function Deficits on Family Functioning

Objective: In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of ADHD and associated executive dysfunctions on family functioning and enrolled children aged between 8- 17 years old diagnosed with ADHD at the study center. The control group was formed of children attending well-child visits at the study center. Method: Executive functions were measured via the Stroop test- TBAG form while the Family Assessment Device (FAD) was used to assess family functioning. Diagnoses were ascertained with K-SADS-PL and symptom severity was reported by parents via the Turgay DSM-IV–Based Child and Adolescent Behavior Disorders Screening and Rating Scale. Descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate methods were used in analyses. P was set at 0.05 (Holm-Bonferroni procedure was used to control for family-wise error rate). Results: Families of children with ADHD performed significantly worse compared to controls in communication, affective responses, affective involvement, behavior control and general functioning. FAD- affective involvement scores of families of girls with ADHD were significantly elevated compared to males. ADHD subtypes, comorbidity and their interaction did not display significant effects on family functioning. Correlation analyses revealed that severity of oppositional and conduct disorder symptoms affected family functioning in various domains. In regression analyses, selective and focused attention and resistance to interference domains of Stroop-TBAG test did not significantly predict family functioning, although there was a signal that processing speed in resistance to interference domain may be important. Conclusion: ADHD diagnosis in children may affect multiple domains of family functioning. Parents of female children with ADHD may experience greater family dysfunction, especially in affective involvement. Severity of oppositionality and behavior problems rather than subtypes and comorbidity seem to affect family functioning in ADHD. Contributions of different facets of executive functions to family functioning in ADHD should be evaluated with different neuropsychological tasks.

Validation of the Arabic version of the family assessment measure III (FAM III)

Family functioning plays an important role in adaptation to developmental changes for both individuals and families. The Family Assessment Measure, third edition, (FAM III) is among the self-report measures used to assess family functioning. However, no version of FAM III has been validated in the context of Saudi Arabia. The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the FAM III in Saudi Arabia. Respondents were presented with a questionnaire containing among others the FAM III and the Family Quality of Life Scale (FQoLS). The construct validity was assessed using confirmatory factor analysis, and concurrent validity, and the internal consistency reliability was assessed with Cronbach alpha coefficients. The results indicated that FAM III is a valid and reliable measure to be used in Saudi Arabia. Moderate correlations were found between subscales of FAM III and some subscales of FQoLS, indicating moderate concurrent validity. Cronbach alphas ranged between 0.68 and 0.76, indicating moderate reliability

Associations between Family Functioning and Symptoms of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): A Cross-Sectional Study.

Poor family functioning is linked with poor child ADHD symptoms. However, there are many dimensions of family functioning. Thus, this study aims to find the association between each dimension of family functioning and controlled ADHD symptoms in an Asian culture. This cross-sectional study involved caregivers of 113 Thai children with ADHD ages 4–16 years old who visited the Outpatient Department at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital between October 2017 and March 2018. The caregivers completed the Chulalongkorn Family Inventory and the SNAP-IV Thai version. Logistic regression was used to examine each dimension of family functioning adjusting for potential confounders. In univariate analyses, six of the seven dimensions of family functioning were associated with controlled ADHD symptoms. In multivariate analyses, findings revealed that good family roles (aOR 7.48, 95% CI = 1.56 to 35.85, p = 0.01) and behavior control (aOR 2.56, 95% CI = 1.08 to 6.03, p = 0.03) were associated with controlled ADHD symptoms. In children with ADHD with poor symptom control, the assessment of family functioning could be helpful. Developing a more specific intervention for caregivers that promotes good family roles and behavioral control may be beneficial.
