Attitudes of infertile women referring to Tabriz Infertility Center about marital relations

Background. Infertility as one of the bitter and Stressful experiences of couple’s cohabitation can affect various aspects of marital relationships, sexual relations and attitudes toward them. Therefore, the study aimed to determine attitudes of infertile women towards infertility and sexual behavior. Methods. In descriptive study with cross-sectional And retrospective study, 124 infertile women referred to the infertility center of Al-Zahra Hospital in Tabriz were selected by counting sampling method. The required data were collected through demographic information and sexual attitude questionnaire. Results. The 60 percent of participants did not report a change in the quality of their sexual relationships. Also, 63 percent of the participants state that sexual desire has no effect on infertility. Most participants did not blame anyone for their infertility (84%) and patients sexual relationships before and after awareness about infertility were not different. Conclusion. The infertility awareness had no effect on patients' sexual relationships. However, patients had problems in control of their lives and were affected by People around.

Association between infertility factors and perceived relationship quality in infertile couples

Infertility is a crisis in the life of couples that could affect their relationships. The present study was conducted to evaluate the relation between infertility factors and the quality of marital relationship in infertile couples who were referred to the Fertility and Infertility Center of Isfahan. The present study was conducted cross-sectional on 131 infertile couples who were referred to the Fertility and Infertility Center of Isfahan and had the inclusion criteria and were selected using convenient sampling method. Data gathering tool for the present study was Perceived Relationship Quality Components (PRQC). All the data were analyzed using SPSS software version 21. Analysis was conducted using descriptive and inferential statistics (independent t-test and one-way analysis of variance). The level of significance was set at 0.05 for all the statistical tests. The mean score of PRQC for women and men was 84.05 and 88.46, respectively, and their difference was statistically significant. There was a significant relation between the score of PRQC in women (P = 0.028) and men (P = 0.030) with the infertility factor. Results showed that the mean score of perceived quality of different aspects of the marital relationship was significantly lower when the infertility factor was female (P < 0.05). In women aspects of "satisfaction" (P = 0.024) and "commitment" (P = 0.011) and in men aspect of "love" (P = 0.004) from the perceived aspects of relationship had a significant relation with the infertility factor. Perceived quality of different aspects of marital relationship had a significant relation with infertility factor in infertile couples. Results of the present study showed that when infertility had female causes, the quality of relationship was more affected. Therefore, in infertility counseling, simultaneous counseling for both spouses with emphasis on women, along with treatments, should be considered.

On the Causal Relationship Between Attachment Styles and Marital Satisfaction: Mediating Role of Gottman's Marital Communication Model

Background: Marital satisfaction is one of the main factors affecting the quality of life in marital relationships. It refers to individuals’ positive attitudes toward their marital relationship, and marital dissatisfaction is a negative and displeased attitude toward various aspects of marital relationship. Objectives: The present study aimed to explore the causal relationship between attachment styles and marital satisfaction regarding the mediating role of Gottman’s marital communication model. Methods: The statistical population encompassed all university students in Ahvaz in the academic year 2019 - 2020. The multi-stage random sampling method was used, and 230 persons were selected as the study samples. Hudson's Index of Marital Satisfaction (IMS), Coolins and Reed's Revised Adult Attachment Scale (RAAS), and Gottman's Communication Skills Scale (FHS) were also used to collect the data. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software version 26 and AMOS software version 24. Results: The results indicated that the study model well-fitted the study population, and all direct paths were statistically significant. Moreover, there was a significant relationship between secure attachment, anxiety-insecure attachment, and avoidance-insecure attachment with marital satisfaction mediated by Gottman's communication skills (P ≤ 0.001). Conclusions: Given the effect of Gottman’s couple attachment styles and four communication skills on marital satisfaction, their effectiveness in marital satisfaction is proved. Accordingly, therapists are recommended to implement educational and treatment programs containing cognitive and preventive attachment styles and Gottman’s communication skills to promote couples' marital satisfaction.

Bipolar affective disorder and its impact on various aspects of marital relationship.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe mental disorder, which not only has negative consequences on the life of the patient, but also affects the immediate family members. As it often starts early in life, patients who get married often suffer from many negative consequences in their marital life due to the illness. This review focuses on studies which have evaluated marital rates, rate of marital failure, divorce, infertility, and procreation among patients with BD. In addition, this review evaluates the existing literature pertaining to marital adjustment, marital satisfaction, sexual dysfunction, and sexual satisfaction among patients with BD and their partners/spouses. Data suggest that very high proportion of patients with BD get married and marital rates are higher for patients with BD, when compared with those suffering from schizophrenia. In terms of divorce rates, studies suggest that patients with BD have higher rates of divorce. In terms of fertility rates, studies suggest that compared to those without the illness, the fertility rates among patients with BD are lower. In terms of marital adjustment, results are mixed with some studies suggesting poorer marital adjustment among patients and their spouses too. In terms of sexual dysfunction, studies suggest the presence of sexual dysfunction among one-third to half of the patients receiving lithium. To conclude, this review suggests that patients with BD experience multiple negative marital and sexual consequences.

Using What We Know about Couples in the Context of Chronic Pain to Push for Continued Progress: Commentary on Vivekanantham and Colleagues

The existent literature on the experience of chronic pain suggests that it is a complex phenomenon. Studies highlight the importance of social factors, notably relationships with close others, as an important factor in the experience of pain and pain outcomes [1]. The paper by Vivekanantham and colleagues in this issue presents a unique way to examine how both members of a couple can impact relationship satisfaction in the context of chronic pain. The findings from this work suggest that spouses of patients with chronic pain who have symptoms of depression experience significantly lower satisfaction with some aspects of marital relationship. Additionally, the findings suggest that for spouses who are not depressed, increases in patient pain severity may serve as a “bonding agent” as measured by consensus in the relationship. This paper provides an interesting addition to the literature and offers a chance to reflect on what has been learned in terms of couples relationships and pain. Ajustamento diádico e satisfação conjugal: correlações entre os domínios de duas escalas de avaliação da conjugalidade

The notions of dyadic adjustment and marital satisfaction are reflected in the scientific literature in an indiscriminate way without considering the specificities of each construct, even though both evaluate domains related to conjugality. This study aimed at analyzing and comparing those constructs by correlating two marital evaluation scales used worldwide the Dyadic Adjustment Scale and the Marital Satisfaction Scale. A hundred six married people (53 men, 53 women) participated in the study; most of them are middle class couples with college degree. A correlation analysis showed that all the variables of the dyadic adjustment scale were correlated to marital satisfaction scale's variables, although each one evaluates different aspects of marital relationships. This finding suggests that both scales (Dyadic Adjustment and Marital Satisfaction) may be grouped together under one construct (conjugality) and become one single instrument for measuring couples' dynamics.

The intertwined relationship between depression and marital distress: elements of marital therapy conductive to effective treatment outcome.

Within the framework of the interpersonal view of depression, this article examines the linkage between depression and four aspects of marital relationship: stress, support, role expectations, and interactional dynamics. Acknowledging the intertwined relationship between depression and marital adjustment, existing models of martial therapy for married depressed patients are examined for the extent to which they address these four aspects. The empirical evidence for the efficacy of these models is also reviewed, suggesting elements of marital therapy that are conducive to effective treatment outcome.

Evaluation of a Preparation for Marriage Workshop

A preparation for marriage workshop was evaluated using pre- and post-workshop assessments of various personal and relationship issues related to marriage and a follow-up questionnaire. Areas of greatest improvement in individual and couple responses were communication and sexual relationships. Indecision about aspects of marital relationships was generally reduced. Few differences in pre- and post-test scores and respondents reports about the usefulness of workshop activities were observed between couples who married their workshop partner and those who did not leading to the conclusion that the workshop activities were benefical for both groups. Couples enrolled in 3 successive regularly scheduled semi-annual Preparation for Marriage Workshops in response to advertisements and referrals. Their goal was their own premarital preparation and they were unaware at the timeof enrollment that they would be asked to evaluate the workshop. 2 instruments were used to evaluate the workshop: the PREPARE Inventory and a follow-up survey. The PREPARE Inventory was designed to assess personal and relationship issues in 12 content areas related to marriage. Items included: idealistic distortion realistic expectations personality issues communication conflict resolution financial management leisure activities sexual relationship and children and marriage. The sample consisted of 30 couples. Among those who married the greatest changes between pre- and post-workshop scores have occurred in the categories of >exual Relationship Religious Orientation Financial Management Children and Marriage and Communication. Major reductions in positive couple agreement for those who chose not to marry appear in the categories of Financial Management Realistic Expectations Leisure Activities and Conflict Resolution.

Permanence vs. change

Abstract Spouses—and perhaps counselors too—frequently depict changes in important aspects of marital relationships as threats to the permanence of those relationships. However, the effects on permanence—whether or not adverse—are better explained in terms of the partner's viewpoints or ways of interpreting the changes. Six common polarities of viewpoint serve to illustrate this point and to stimulate and organize counselors' focus on the general construal factor. This focus should elicit constructive counseling strategies beyond those already elicited by a focus on reducing the changes or facilitating the separations.
