A strategy for reducing construction waste generated during the design process in architectural design firms in Egypt

Purpose This paper aims to develop and validate a strategy for reducing construction waste (CW) generated during the design process (DP) in architectural design firms (ADFs) in Egypt. Design/methodology/approach Qualitative and quantitative research methodology was designed to accomplish four objectives. The literature review investigated DP, CW, waste management (WM) and WM strategies (WMS). Three case studies were analysed to investigate the role of WMS towards reducing CW during DP. A survey questionnaire was conducted with a representative sample of ADFs in Egypt to assess their perception and application of WMS during DP. Lastly, a strategy was developed and validated to reduce CW generated during DP. Findings Through literature review, the research identified the highest 40 causes of CW during the DP and classified them into 13 categories. Despite early promotion of WMS to reduce CW at its source, Egypt and other countries with similar construction market characteristics lack laws and regulations to address CW during the DP, with current codes primarily focusing on post-occurrence issues. In addition, analysis of three case studies showed that CW was reduced by adopting WMS during the DP. Findings of data analysis revealed that ADFs have an average knowledge of WMS and a low awareness of Egyptian laws and WMS during DP. “Prefabrication” was the highest-ranked strategy for CW reduction during DP. Several challenges hamper the implementation of WMS. The “preparation and briefing” was ranked the most common design stage where CW causes occur, while “waiting” was ranked the most common form of CW. These findings informed the research outcome and helped in the development of the proposed strategy. Research limitations/implications The proposed strategy was developed taking into account the results of the survey questionnaire which was conducted in ADFs in Egypt where the authors reside, and such a strategy is needed. However, it could be applied in other countries that share the same characteristics of the architectural DP as well as the causes of CW and WMS implementation challenges. Practical implications This research presents a practical strategy to reduce CW generated during the DP. It was based on the findings of literature review, case studies and survey questionnaire. The strategy was explained in a workable way to include the required activities; tools and techniques; involved personnel and needed resources. The strategy was validated by a representative sample of ADFs in Egypt to ensure its practicability and viability for implementation towards developing a sustainable built environment. The practical application of the strategy will have long-term and short-term benefits. The long-term benefits include improving the social, economic and environmental aspects of sustainability during the design and construction phases in Egypt. In the short term, application of the strategy will improve the cooperation between design and construction teams, reduce the negative impact of CW production and enhance the quality of construction projects in Egypt. Originality/value Despite the need to reduce CW during DP, a practical strategy is lacking in Egypt, where laws are focused on dealing with CW after its existence. This research studied a topic that received scant attention in construction literature. It developed and validated a strategy to reduce CW during DP, which represents a synthesis that is novel and creative in thought and adds value in a manner that has not been previously explored.

Of study enthusiasts and homebirds: students’ everyday mobility and sustainability dilemmas in online higher education

PurposeOnline education enables location-independent learning, potentially providing university students with more flexible study programs and reducing traffic-related CO2 emissions. This paper aims to examine whether online education can contribute to university-related sustainable everyday mobility, with particular consideration given to aspects of social sustainability and potential rebound effects. Specifically, it explores sustainability dilemmas that arise from conflicting social and ecological effects.Design/methodology/approachDrawing on qualitative data from mobility diaries and extensive semistructured interviews (n = 26) collected at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences in Germany, this study deploys thematic analysis and a typification approach to analyze and classify students’ daily practices related to studying, mobility and dwelling, which may be impacted by online education.FindingsThe study identifies six distinct student types with diverse practices in studying, mobility and dwelling. Comparisons between student types reveal stark differences regarding professional and social goals that students associate with their studies, influencing university-related mobility and residential choices. This leads to varying assessments of online education, with some students expecting benefits and others anticipating severe drawbacks.Practical implicationsThe typology developed in this paper can assist Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in comparable contexts in understanding the distinct needs and motivations of students, thereby proactively identifying sustainability dilemmas associated with online education. By leveraging these findings, HEIs can effectively balance diverse interests and contribute meaningfully to sustainability.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is among the first to systematically investigate conflicts and rebound effects of online education in the context of sustainable mobility within HEIs.

Infusing Sustainability

Design for Sustainability has evolved rapidly over the last decades as a response to unprecedented global challenges. Several models have been developed to address the need to design more sustainable products, services, and policies. These strategies are oriented towards more sustainable ways of living. The Compass, developed by the Index Project in Denmark, is a method that offers a framework to structure the design process while considering social, environmental, and economic sustainability aspects. This article presents an exploratory case study to infuse sustainability in design education using this method in interdisciplinary teams. The context is a master’s degree offered by a design school in a Chilean university. The study's outcomes reveal that The Compass method is a dynamic and flexible structure for design in interdisciplinary teams. To strengthen its applicability, it could incorporate links to sustainability methods from various areas of knowledge that specifically address economic, environmental, or social aspects. Complementing The Compass with these sustainable approaches to confront the complexity of the challenges may facilitate the move from good ideas to feasible, sustainable design solutions in design and other fields.

Sustainable Affordable Housing: State-of-the-Art and Future Perspectives

Nowadays, there are many studies with a significant focus on affordable housing. The relevance of this theme, which is usually the central object of public housing policies, requires an updated review of the problems and challenges to be overcome, especially in terms of sustainability, in favor of an improvement in the quality of products delivered to beneficiaries. This research concentrates on applying the sustainability concept to affordable housing, emphasizing technical, social, and governance aspects. A novel classification framework is introduced, encompassing these aspects in the context of sustainability integrated with affordable housing. A systematic literature review is conducted and more than 100 articles are examined based on bibliometric and bibliographic analyses to highlight the main dimensions and topics involved in the housing public policy sphere. The study has been elaborated based on collecting relevant materials, building a descriptive analysis of the literature examined, highlighting the classification structure that categorizes the studies examined, and evaluating the material identified based on the classification structure. The outcomes aim to spotlight the diverse dimensions of sustainable affordable housing and associated research themes. Furthermore, the research outlines deficiencies in current approaches and outlines a future research agenda for implementing sustainability in affordable housing. It establishes a strong connection between technical, social, and governance aspects of affordable housing and sustainability, considering anticipated approaches, techniques, and challenges.

Building Blocks for an Energy Transition

The present need for an energy transition in the wake of a global climate catastrophe led to the “EU green deal” which requires a transition of the energy system in all countries. This study aimis survey aims to identify strategies within such an energy transition based on global trend analyses and reports on available technologies for implementation. Based on a literature analysis of over 300 pieces (of feasibility studies and technology implementation reports with a focus on Central Europe) and a statistical analysis of the levels of “energy intensity” (E/GDP) covering three decades and all countries worldwide, the diagnosis is made that steady improvements in several dedicated technological focus areas can be made and were made and could still be increased in the future, as required by climate targets. Across several distinct fields of energy economy, the concrete options for such improvements are portrayed: Energy infrastructure, Smart grids, Transmission grid management, Electricity storage, Heat storage, and Industrial waste heat; and linked with the diagnosed long-term trends emerging from the “Global Change Data Base” GCDB, allowing for a sectorial analysis of the so-called energy intensity, which was not yet delivered until now as time series in the literature. The main findings show which economic sectors and clusters of technologies can be most appropriate to achieve climate targets while safeguarding social aspects of sustainability.

Sustainable vehicle allocation decisions under a vertical logistics collaboration setting

Enhancing vehicle utilization through a collaborative logistics approach allows businesses to contribute to the three pillars of sustainability by reducing fuel consumption and emissions, enhancing profit margins, and increasing customer satisfaction. This paper aims to introduce an Integer Linear Programming model for solving a vehicle allocation problem within a proposed vertical logistics collaboration setting. In this collaboration setup, production capacity allocation decisions are jointly made by collaborating customers and the logistics service provider, in order to create a more balanced and profitable logistics plan for all involved parties. Through the application of the proposed mathematical model, our numerical analyses illustrate the effects of the vertical logistics collaboration on the performance of transportation operations, including improved vehicle utilization rate and increased satisfied demand amount. Besides, we analyze the outputs of this operation related to the economic (by focusing on profit growth), environmental (by measuring the reduction in emissions), and social (by assessing the discounted transportation costs for customers) aspects of sustainability. To the best of our knowledge, no current study in the literature has established the vehicle allocation problem in the context of vertical logistics collaboration across all three sustainability pillars at the same time. The model can also serve as a tool for evaluating the potential economic, environmental, and social benefits arising from vertical collaboration and joint projects with customers, along with the support offered to logistics decisions.

Water footprint assessment in an industrial symbiosis system based on environmental, economic, and social sustainability indices

Integrated water resource management requires a comprehensive assessment of all water uses, both direct and indirect, which can be captured by the Water Footprint (WF) concept, especially in Industrial Symbiosis (IS). IS creates links between different industries to reduce resource consumption. This article analyses the environmental, social, and economic sustainability aspects of the WF in an IS system. First, the inventories of these three aspects were carried out simultaneously with the WF inventory. Sustainability indices were presented based on the relative comparison of current WF and sustainably oriented WF (SOWF). SOWF in an IS system is defined as the situation with minimum total WF and is obtained by mathematical programming. The proposed framework was applied to an IS involving three industries in southeastern Iran: steel production, coal concentrate, and power generation. The blue WFs of these industries were calculated as 11.77 m3/ton of steel, 0.87 m3/ton of coal, and 8.31 m3/MWh of power. The sustainability indices revealed that the steel industry exhibited a more favorable environmental and social performance than other industries, while the power generation was economically superior with a higher cost ratio of current WF to SOWF. Subsequently, several sustainability-enhancing solutions were evaluated based on environmental, economic, and social criteria. Among these, solar energy usage, wastewater reuse, and recycling in iron ore processing emerged as effective strategies to enhance overall sustainability by reducing WFs and improving social criteria. Ultimately, the wastewater reuse option was given the highest priority.

The Relative Importance of the SDG Pillars

The seventeen United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) comprise social, economic, and environmental aspects of sustainability, and as such they can be grouped into five so-called pillars, i.e., People, Prosperity, Planet, Peace, and Partnership. The present study elucidates the relative importance of these pillars for 193 countries and 12 regions in their attempts to comply with the SDGs as well as the trends towards compliance based on partial order analyses. It is unambiguously demonstrated that the pillar Planet, comprising SDGs 6, 12, 13, 14, and 15, in all cases turns out as the far most important pillar both about the present degree of compliance as well as concerning the development trend. Not surprisingly the OECD region appears as the region with the highest degree of compliance whereas Africa has the least. However, when it comes to the trends the OECD and the high-income countries (HIC) apparently come staggering up when it comes to the pilar planet due to rather low pillar planet values. For the individual countries Finland and Denmark were found on the top ranks. The reason for the importance of the pillar Planet as well as the difference between sustainability goals and sustainability is discussed.

People–Place Narratives as Knowledge Typologies for Social Sustainability: Cases from Urban Contexts in the Global South

In the dynamic interplay between people and their physical environments, the Global South stands as a mosaic undergoing a multitude of transformative influences in architecture and urbanism, within which examining social sustainability becomes imperative. While the prevailing attention remains on environmental and economic sustainability, this study addresses a persistent gap in the urban literature by focusing on the dynamic and manifold nature of social sustainability. Positioning itself within the context of sustainable development, the study links the pursuit of social aspects of sustainability with selected unique urban contexts from the Global South. Five cases, including Alexandria (Egypt), Tripoli (Libya), Basra (Iraq), Lilongwe (Malawi), and Accra (Ghana), are discussed through multi-layered investigations which involve attitude surveys, interviews, focus groups, participatory systematic observations, and behavioral mapping, engaging directly with inhabitants and stakeholders. Uncovering people–place narratives in the identified contexts, the cases are developed into five knowledge typologies that serve as practical tools for planning and design decision-making, policy formulation, and academic discourse. Discussions are conceived to demonstrate the transformative role people–place narratives play in fostering a more sustainable and equitable urban future. Conclusions are drawn to offer practical insights for stakeholders involved in various capacities in shaping the urban landscape of the Global South.

Social Life Cycle Assessment of Solar Dryer House for Postharvest Loss Management Technology in Tanzania

Agricultural products are dried to improve their life-span, enable storage stability, and reduce postharvest losses. Open-sun crop drying is the most popular method in Sub-Saharan Africa because it has a lower energy cost. However, this method is more often unsuitable due to climatic conditions in some areas, resulting in poor-quality drying and spoiled food products. Solar dryer house technology is designed to address challenges related to cleaner energy costs for efficient post-harvest loss management. Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) is a methodology used to integrate a compatible analysis of three pillars of sustainability: economy, environment, and society. Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA), on the other hand, is a methodology used to cover the social aspects of sustainability. This article examines the S-LCA of solar dryer house technology for post-harvest loss management. It found that S-LCA is a useful framework for sustainability assessment and social impact estimation for analyzing the effects of products or services on stakeholders at local, national, and global levels beyond environmental and economic impact. The article contributes to knowledge and understanding of UNEP and SETAC guidelines in Africa.

Including SDGs in low-carbon transport scenarios: A case of Udaipur

<p>Transportation is fundamental to shaping urban form and quality of life. The transport sector contributes to a quarter of global GHG emissions. It is integral to countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to mitigate global warming or control warming beyond 2 ℃ or 1.5 ℃ above the pre-industrial level. Climate change mitigation in the transport sector demands a tailored approach for cities of the global south—recently urbanizing with increased dependence on motorization—incorporating social aspects of sustainability. The study examines the delivery of climate change mitigation and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in Udaipur’s passenger transport sector through six SDGs. Over and above the business-as-usual scenario, the two scenarios presented are the technology scenario, which recalibrates Udaipur’s available low-carbon mobility plan, and the SDG scenario, which addresses social transformations by applying assumptions derived from the primary survey in the city. The socially sensitive SDG scenario prioritizes the mobility demands of those with low or no mobility. It also enhances mobility by retaining the share of non-motorized transport (NMT), intermediate public transport (IPT), and public transport (PT) and regulating excessive use of private motorized vehicles. However, the SDG scenario causes a 26% increase in the vehicle kilometer traveled (VKT), a 24% increase in CO<sub>2</sub> emissions, and a 29% decrease in other GHG emissions over the Technology Scenario.</p>

The role of social and environmental sustainability on sportswear’s purchasing among European consumers

PurposeWhile consumer preferences for sporting goods have been widely researched within sport management, literature is lacking on aspects of social and environmental sustainability. Accordingly, this study aims to investigate the role of social and environmental sustainability for purchase decisions of sportswear and compares them to the role of price and functionality.Design/methodology/approachBased on a conjoint analysis among 1,012 Europeans, the authors conducted a two-step cluster analysis. First, the authors investigated the number of segments via Ward’s method. Second, the authors ran a k-means analysis based on part-worth utilities from the conjoint analysis.FindingsThe authors identified four segments which differ in terms of preferred product attributes, willingness to pay, and sociodemographic, behavioral, and psychographic characteristics: undecided, sustainable, price-focused and function-oriented consumers. Based on this segmentation, the authors found that the importance of social and environmental sustainability is growing, but not among all consumers.Research limitations/implicationsThe generalizability of the study is limited since it is not built on a sample representative for the included European countries, it focuses on a single product, and participants are potentially subject to a social desirability bias.Originality/valueThe consumer analysis comprises the uptake of attributes related to social and environmental sustainability. The authors thereby address a literature gap as previous research (thematizing sporting goods) in the sport management field has often neglected sustainability elements despite their rapidly growing importance within the sport sector.

The Social Pillar of ESG: Exploring the Link Between Social Sustainability and Stock Price Synchronicity

This study examined the association between the social sustainability aspects of environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives and stock price synchronicity in 146 publicly listed companies in India from 2011 to 2021. Social sustainability is gauged using indicators such as community engagement, adherence to human rights, customer loyalty, consumer health and safety protection, and employee welfare. Panel data regression with industry-year fixed effects reveals a positive association between social sustainability and stock price synchronicity. This finding suggests that the stocks of companies with strong social issue management are more aligned with market movements. The findings indicate that investors value ethical management, commitment to human rights and employee satisfaction. The insights provided by this study are vital for investors’ fund allocation decisions, highlighting the importance of workforce and supply chain diversity, fair workplace practices, human rights compliance and product integrity in informed investment decision-making. Overall, the research confirms the economic benefits that social sustainability bestows on companies and their investors.

A Multi-Objective Model for Designing a Sustainable Closed-Loop Supply Chain Logistics Network

Background: The growing concern for environmental and social issues has led to a focus on designing sustainable supply chains and increasing industrial responsibility towards society. In this paper, a multi-objective mixed-integer programming model is presented for designing a sustainable closed-loop supply chain. The model is aimed at the minimization of the total cost with the total used facilities, the negative environmental impacts, and the maximization of the positive social impacts. Methods: The epsilon-constraint method is utilized for solving the model and further extracting the Pareto solutions. Results: The result of the research clearly shows an optimal trade-off between the conflicting objectives, where, by paying more attention to the social and environmental aspects of sustainability, the total costs are increased or by optimizing the number of facilities, a better balance between the dynamics associated with the short-term and long-term goals is reached. The results of the sensitivity analysis also show that increasing the demand of the supply chain has the greatest impact on the supply chain costs compared to other objectives. Conclusions: Consequently, investigating such comprehensive sustainable objectives provides better insights into the impact of design variables on the expectations of stakeholders.

Blockchain Technology as a Catalyst for Sustainable Development: Exploring Economic, Social, and Environmental Synergies

This paper explores the transformative potential of blockchain technology (BT) as a catalyst for sustainable development, addressing the tri-fold aspects of environmental, economic, and social sustainability. Through a comprehensive review and theoretical framework, it delves into how BT can significantly contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The study highlights BT's role in enhancing transparency, ensuring product traceability, and promoting resource efficiency, thereby facilitating a more equitable economic growth and environmental stewardship. By examining various applications of BT across industries including supply chain management, renewable energy, and conservation efforts, the paper illustrates BT's capability to reduce carbon emissions, improve resource allocation, and support sustainable business practices. Furthermore, it identifies challenges such as scalability, energy consumption, and regulatory hurdles, proposing strategic recommendations for overcoming these obstacles. The research emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts among stakeholders, including policymakers, practitioners, and researchers, to leverage BT effectively for sustainable development. It contributes to both theoretical understanding and practical implementation of blockchain as a powerful enabler for sustainability, offering insights for future research and policy-making in this evolving domain.

Purpose: Achieving a balance between development and conservation for sustainability in island tourism destinations necessitates a profound understanding of tourists' perspectives. This research aims to assess how tourists perceive the social, environmental, and economic sustainability aspects, often referred to as the Triple Bottom Line.
 Methods: Utilizing the Martilla & James Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA), with Deng's modifications, this study focuses on Chinese domestic tourists with experience in Weizhou Island in China. Through convenience sampling, data were collected via online surveys from November 1 to November 7, 2023, resulting in 300 valid responses for final analysis.
 Results: The revised IPA technique revealed that, from the tourist's standpoint, effective management of tourism products and services, especially souvenir prices and transportation costs, at an appropriate level is crucial. Tourists emphasize the need for prioritized attention to achieve this. Furthermore, while tourists generally rate the economic value creation through dominant island tourism positively, concerns arise regarding excessive dependence on tourism in both industry and regional economies.
 Conclusion: This study highlights two key academic implications. Firstly, it emphasizes that although similar factors contribute to the pursuit of sustainability, tourists' evaluations may vary depending on specific attributes. Secondly, evaluating sustainability from the perspective of external stakeholders, such as tourists, holds significance.

The effects of contractual and relational governance on public‐private partnership sustainability

AbstractThe study investigates how contractual and relational governance influence partner behaviors and promote sustainability performance of infrastructure public‐private partnerships (PPPs). Survey data from 217 Chinese PPP projects were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. This study found that both contractual and relational governance have positive effects on PPP sustainability, with contractual governance having a stronger impact. Contractual governance complements relational governance in promoting cooperative behavior, but relational governance does not amplify the effect of contractual governance on opportunistic behavior. The findings highlight the role of contracts in curbing opportunism and promoting collaboration via multiple functions of control, coordination, and adaption, while also revealing the limitations of relational approaches in the context of government‐business relationships and performance ambiguity. This study contributes to the PPP governance literature by uncovering the individual and interactive effects of contractual and relational governance on the economic, social, and environmental aspects of PPP sustainability.

The Role of BIM in Managing Risks in Sustainability of Bridge Projects: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis

With the significant and rapid growth observed in bridge projects worldwide, the associated environmental, economic, and social concerns are on the rise. A systematic review of bridge sustainability with meta-analysis according to the PRISMA guidelines was performed, aiming to improve understanding of the importance of using building information modeling (BIM) in bridge projects by investigating the role of proper implementation of this technology to avoid and mitigate risks and improve sustainability. The relevant international literature was collected and scrutinized. The findings demonstrated that the accurate implementation of BIM significantly enhances the efficient management of risks in bridge projects. Consequently, this has a positive effect on improving the three essential (environmental, economic, and social) aspects of sustainability. The impact mentioned is especially apparent in enhancing the management of information throughout the entire lifespan of a bridge. This, in turn, facilitates precise decision-making during the design phase, aligns with assessments of environmental impact, enables real-time monitoring during execution, effectively manages the maintenance of the structure, facilitates efficient allocation and utilization of resources, and improves design practices by providing designers with accurate information. Delving into the nuances of this review has shed light on the transformative potential of BIM in shaping sustainable bridge projects, laying the groundwork for future advancements in this critical field.

From Pseudo to Genuine Sustainability Education: Ecopedagogy and Degrowth in Business Studies Courses

Abstract This article surveys critical scholarship that links the literature on sustainable business education and education for sustainable development goals (ESDG). It is assumed that ESDG is desirable in the business curriculum. However, it is argued here that ESDG erroneously fosters the illusion of successfully combining economic growth, social justice, and environmental protection, foregrounding “sustained and inclusive economic growth”, which is often dependent on the increased consumption of natural resources. ESDG rarely addresses industrial expansion that jeopardizes the opportunity for the resolution of environmental crises, ignoring the intrinsic value of nonhuman species and ecosystems and masking the root causes of unsustainability. ESDG places heavy emphasis on economic and social aspects of sustainability, at the cost of the environment. By contrast, some earlier forms of environmental education recognize the limits to growth and emphasize environmental integrity as a foundation for both social and economic activity. This article emphasizes the need to re-orientate ESDG towards genuine sustainability of ecopedagogy in the context of business education, emphasizing transformative business models based on degrowth, circular economy, and steady-state economy. It is argued that a more explicit pedagogical re-orientation towards the recognition of planetary boundaries, as well as toward a less anthropocentric focus is needed.

Building sustainable agri-food market systems: Interconnectedness of social, economic and environmental factors in biofortified cassava food systems

Sustainability and the future of food systems have become major food policy discourses in recent years. While prior research has focused on analyzing social, economic, and environmental aspects of sustainability separately, the present study takes a broader approach to understand the interconnectedness of these dimensions. The present study involves a cross-sectional survey of 90 biofortified cassava base of pyramid (BoP) producers in Nigeria. Data for this study were collected through structured interviews and analyzed using a combination of descriptive analysis and the structural equation modelling (SEM) method. The analysis of the fit indices indicates that the model is appropriate, and the associations between the dimensions and their constructs are statistically significant and positive, suggesting a robust relationship that supports the hypothesized path movements. Our analysis revealed a strong correlation between environmental and economic issues, emphasizing the significance of value-based supply chain practices as a marketing option and its considerable market potential, among other considerations. The study supports adopting a systemic approach in managing sustainability challenges and, thus, serves as a foundation for developing sustainable policies that align the demands of the market, society, and environment.
