Toward Sustainable Urban Mobility: A Multidimensional Ontology-Based Framework for Assessment and Consensus Decision-Making Using DS-AHP

Urban mobility is a critical aspect of sustainable urban development, with significant environmental, social, and economic implications. Assessing the sustainability of urban mobility systems in order to create more carbon neutral, liveable, healthier, and sustainable cities and neighborhoods for the future requires a multidimensional approach that integrates diverse factors. However, the lack of a unified assessment framework poses challenges in comparing and evaluating different urban mobility projects. This article proposes an ontology for assessing the sustainability of urban mobility systems. This ontology is based on a multidimensional approach that integrates knowledge from experts in transportation engineering, urban planning, environmental science, and social sciences to incorporate existing sustainability indicators and frameworks, as well as domain-specific knowledge. A consensus approach based on Dempster–Shäfer (DS) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods is proposed to account for uncertainties and to allow for the consideration of preferences and ill judgment. Through a case study in Romania, the authors demonstrated the applicability of the proposal to provide a comprehensive and flexible framework for assessing urban mobility sustainability. The proposed ontology provides a valuable tool for policymakers, urban planners, and transportation engineers to make informed decisions towards sustainable urban mobility, and the sensitivity analysis is carried out to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed framework. It has potential for iterative validation and feedback from domain experts, and can serve as a foundation for future research.

The Mekong River, urban health, and sustainable development in northeastern Thailand

ABSTRACT Rivers are linked to urban health and sustainable development, and yet the literature emphasises environmental science and overlooks the human side. This article presents a human-centred study of urban health and sustainable development in northeastern Thailand in relation to the Mekong River. The study’s framework, the travelogue methodology, brings travel to urban areas near the river (Nakhon Phanom, Bueng Kan, Phon Phisai, Nong Khai, That Phanom, Mukdahan, and Ubon Ratchathani) into the research and knowledge generation process. Data collection in June and July 2023 included observation, photography, note-taking, travel-journaling, and conversations with urban adult residents, analysed in narrative writing. The findings adeptly link the Mekong River to diverse aspects of urban health and sustainable development, including physical activity, social cohesion, food supply and nutrition, water supply, heritage, religious practices, liveability, and sense of place. It also brings to the fore the many threats to the river and, therefore, to human health. By addressing the areas for improvement, future research and practice can build upon these findings to promote healthy, sustainable, and resilient urban environments along the Mekong River and beyond.

THE FACTORS OF SERVICE QUALITY IN SKI TOURISM ON THE EXAMPLE OF THE REPUBLIC OF SERBIA

The aim of this paper is to provide an insight into the current models of service quality in ski tourism with a practical implication on the example of the Republic of Serbia. Nowadays, ski tourism has evolved into an important segment of the winter tourism industry in Europe. Its development was encouraged by the popularisation of skiing as a sport, as well as the growth of the number of people who ski professionally or recreationally.The studies from relevant publishers have been dealt with the concept of travellers’ motivation in ski tourism from different point of views such as, the aspect of sustainable development in tourism, quality management, marketing strategy and customer satisfaction. When defining the research scope, it was noted that service quality represents an important driver of motivation in sports tourism. However, there is a certain research gap in exploring the factors that affect the service quality in winter sports, and in particular models and instruments that could provide their better understanding. In accordance with this statement, the research question in the study was to analyse the main determinants of service quality in ski tourism in the Republic of Serbia and to compare their relevance among the respondents belonging to different countries of origin and gender. The theoretical research presented in this paper was based on the application of a systematic literature review that has included relevant studies dealing with the concept of service quality in winter sport tourism. In addition, empirical research was conducted to address the research question in finding the factors that influence the service quality in ski tourism. The research was based on a sample of 208 skiers who visited the Republic of Serbia during the winter seasons in years 2023 and 2024. In the analysis and interpretation of the data, descriptive statistics, compare means and factor analysis were used.

Developing approaches to the sustainability assurance

Subject. This article discusses the approaches to assurance of sustainability information disclosed in various types of corporate reporting. Objectives. The article aims to assess the prospects for enhancing trust and confidence in sustainability information due to issuing the proposed Exposure Draft International Standard on Sustainability Assurance (ISSA) 5000, General Requirements for Sustainability Assurance Engagements. Methods. For the study, I used analysis, synthesis, comparison, generalization, and abstraction. Results. Based on the study of the international practices of disclosure and confirmation of information in the field of sustainable development and consideration of the essence of the proposed Exposure Draft International Standard on Sustainability Assurance (ISSA) 5000, General Requirements for Sustainability Assurance Engagements, the article assesses the prospects for applying this Standard in Russian practice. Conclusions. The requirements of the proposed Exposure Draft of the first profession-specific standard, which lays the foundation for the development of the ISSA-series standards system to express a certain degree of confidence by practitioners regarding the reliability of information on various aspects of sustainable development generated in accordance with a particular reporting system, develop a methodology for confirming information on sustainable development. The Standard can be directly applied or become the basis for the development of Russian standards for confirming information in the field of sustainable development presented both in the sustainability report and in other types of corporate reporting other than financial statements. The article contributes to improving awareness of all stakeholders about trends in the field of verification of information in the field of sustainable development.

An exploration of operational efficiency, market efficiency, and sustainable development in the banking industry

AbstractSustainable development is the primary goal of the current global economic transformation. The banking industry, as an intermediary institution within the financial system, not only serves as a crucial foundation for national economic development but also plays a key role in the global transition to sustainability and a low‐carbon economy. Banks can leverage the influence of financing to direct funds towards sustainable ventures and simultaneously develop green financial products, guiding ordinary consumers to make more environmentally friendly choices. How the banking industry can effectively improve operational efficiency while considering sustainable development is one of the key focuses of ongoing development in the banking sector. The main aim of this study is to incorporate the aspect of sustainable development into the evaluation of operational efficiency, aligning with the goals of corporate sustainable development. It allows for an analysis of how decision‐makers in the banking industry can adjust resources to maintain stable and sustainable profitability while promoting sustainable development. This study selected 13 financial holding banks and 19 non‐financial holding banks in Taiwan as research subjects, covering the period from 2016 to 2021. Utilizing a meta assurance regions (AR) parallel dynamic two‐stage slacks‐based measure model with “operational stage” and “market and sustainability parallel stage,” the research explores the efficiency performance of banks considering sustainable development. It examines the differences in efficiency performance at various stages among different types of banks. The research findings are as follows: (1) among the banking industry in Taiwan, operational stage efficiency ranks the highest, followed by sustainable stage efficiency, while market stage performance lags behind. (2) Financial holding banks outperform non‐financial holding banks on average in operational stage, market stage, and sustainable stage efficiency. (3) Fubon Financial, TFH, CATHAY HOLDINGS, and SKFH are benchmark performers among financial holding banks. (4) Non‐financial holding banks exhibit a higher average technical gap ratio compared to financial holding banks, indicating that non‐financial holding banks have fewer inefficient areas to improve. However, the technical efficiency of both groups of banks approaches each other over the years. (5) In the sustainable stage, financial holding banks demonstrate superior environmental indicators and corporate treatment efficiency compared to non‐financial holding banks.

Potential of Effective Microorganisms in the Aspect of Sustainable Development

Human activity has been impacting the environment for thousands of years. Progressing environmental pollution caused by human economic activity is associated with an increase in the concentration of trace elements and the formation of an excess of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs have always been present in the environment, but the development of civilisation and technology has resulted in their increase. PAHs easily penetrate plants, animals and the human body, which makes them a serious threat to human health and agriculture. Reducing the amount of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the soil is possible by introducing a microbiological preparation in the form of Effective Microorganisms (EM) into the soil. Some strains of microorganisms in EM can decompose chemical compounds, including PAHs. Through biodegradation, EM transforms harmful substances into less toxic forms. EM stimulates the activity of soil microflora, which naturally participates in the decomposition processes of organic substances, which contributes to improving soil quality and environmental protection. The following work presents the results of own research on analysing the impact of Effective Microorganisms on changes in the content of PAHs in the soil. It was observed that 75% of test samples in the form of soils after wheat cultivation in which EM was added had lower contents of 3,4,5-ring PAHs than their control samples. The work aims to analyse the potential of EM as a preparation that supports the natural capabilities of the ecosystem to reduce the amount of pollutants in the form of PAHs in the soil.

Digitalization in the Renewable Energy Sector

This study explored the association between renewable energy uptake and digitalization in the sector by reviewing relevant literature (published 2010–2022), with the aim of identifying the existing utilization of digital technologies within the sector, challenges to adoption, and future prospects. Different search engines (SCOPUS, Web of Science, and Google Scholar) were used to locate relevant papers and documents. The results revealed the high significance of digital technologies in supporting the renewable energy sector, with high costs and security risks representing the key challenges. Most papers reviewed had a positive outlook, but recommended further research and development for effective energy transition and resilient infrastructure. The current drivers of the integration of digital technologies to support the diffusion of renewable energy sources appear to extend beyond energy demand and involve many aspects of sustainability and sustainable development. Compared with previous reviews, this work has unique scope and novelty since it considers the bigger picture of the coupling between digitalization and the renewable energy sector, with a greater focus on critical areas in these two interconnected bodies that need to be addressed. The relatively small sample of relevant papers (69 from 836 hits) located in the literature review confirms the need for more research covering the subject in greater depth.

Catalytic pyrolysis characteristics of polystyrene by biomass char-supported nanocatalysts

Plastics originate from the synthesis of chemical products, and the regeneration of chemical products from waste plastics through catalytic pyrolysis helps to reduce the dependence on fossil resources and improve the treatment of waste, which is an important aspect of current sustainable social development. In this study, metasequoia was used as a biomass precursor and three porous char-supported nanocatalysts (Fe-MEC, Ni-MEC, and Co-MEC) were synthesized via a simple and feasible microwave heating method, which were then used as catalysts for the preparation of high-quality liquid oil from polystyrene powder via an ex-situ catalytic pyrolysis method. The results indicate that Fe-MEC, Ni-MEC, and Co-MEC possessed good pore structures due to the microwave-heating and catalytic effect of these metals, and metal nanoparticles are generated and uniformly anchored on the matrix of the char support. Using these catalysts, the yield of liquid product from polystyrene pyrolysis decreased slightly, while the gas yield increased slightly. Fe-MEC catalysis reached the highest liquid yield of 91% among the three catalysts. The catalysts can improve the yield of a series of high-value liquid products such as toluene, ethylbenzene, and α-methyl styrene. The catalysts also exhibited excellent cycle stability, and carbon nanotubes were formed which are less prone to deactivation.

Indeed, family businesses account for 80 percent of all business enterprises worldwide, making them the prevalent form of conducting business. As these entities grapple with the imperative to remain economically viable while navigating the intricacies of the contemporary business landscape, the incorporation of sustainable practices into the organizational fabric takes centre stage. By actively seeking a harmonious and reciprocal relationship between financial objectives, social responsibility, and environmental accountability, family businesses can not only secure their own longevity but also contribute to a more equitable and sustainable global environment. This narrative becomes especially compelling at the intersection with gender. Exploring the intersection between gender and sustainability provides insights into how gender dynamics influence and are influenced by efforts to achieve sustainable development. Moreover, understanding and addressing this interplay is essential for devising holistic and effective strategies that promote social equity, economic prosperity, and environmental stewardship. It underscores the need for inclusive and gender-sensitive approaches in all aspects of sustainable development. Acknowledging the significance of this ongoing dialogue, this study delves into the intricate relationship between gender dynamics and the environmental dimension of sustainability within family businesses. Through a systematic literature review of empirical research, this work specifically aims to uncover the linkage between board gender diversity and corporate environmental performance. The findings indicate that gender-diverse boards improve environmental value creation, and women in leadership positions correlate positively with environmental disclosure in family-controlled businesses. Overall, a strong positive correlation emerges between the proportion of women directors on the board and the level of environmental sustainability. The findings of this study hold implications not only for family business practitioners but also for policymakers and academics interested in propelling gender equality and sustainability agendas, notably within the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Electrophile-mediated ionic liquid strategy for transforming inert natural polymers into highly active iodine adsorbents

The separation and conversion of gas resources are crucial aspects of sustainable energy development. Developing general methods to overcome bottlenecks in gas adsorption and conversion within natural polymers is an urgent global concern. In this work, the use of ionic liquids as electrophiles was proposed, and the Ionic Liquid Solution Process (ILSP) was employed to prepare alginate polymers-based on natural polymers. ILSP achieved a remarkable 0-to-1 transformation in gaseous iodine adsorption, converting inactive alginic acid (∼0 g g−1 in saturated adsorption capacity) into a highly active iodine adsorbent (5.24 g g−1). It was revealed that electrophiles effectively regulated the electron cloud distribution of functional groups by replacing acidic protons on alginic acid, exerting a volumetric effect. This increased the electron density near the deprotonated carboxylic groups, enhancing the nucleophilicity of carboxylic groups. Consequently, it promoted halogen interaction between electron-rich oxygen atoms and iodine during adsorption, thereby improving the efficiency of charge transfer complex formation and polyiodide ion conversion. The ILSP strategy could provide guidance for the separation and conversion of gases such as iodine, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen.

A Scoping Review on Youth Participation in Agriculture: Sustainable Development, Food Security, and Economic Growth

Youth participation in agriculture is a critical aspect of sustainable development, food security, and economic growth in many regions worldwide. This scoping review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of existing literature on youth engagement in agricultural activities. The review explores various dimensions of youth involvement in agriculture, including motivations, challenges, opportunities, and impacts. The methodology involves a systematic search of electronic databases, including scholarly articles, reports, and grey literature, to identify relevant studies published within a specified timeframe. The inclusion criteria encompass literature that examines the participation of youth (aged 15-35) in agricultural practices, policies, programs, and initiatives across different geographic regions and socio-economic contexts. Initial findings suggest a growing interest in understanding and promoting youth engagement in agriculture, driven by concerns about rural development, unemployment, and food insecurity. Motivations for youth involvement vary widely and may include economic incentives, cultural traditions, social factors, and environmental consciousness. However, numerous challenges hinder youth participation, such as limited access to land, financial resources, education, and technology, as well as negative perceptions of agriculture as a career. Moreover, the review identifies a range of opportunities for enhancing youth involvement in agriculture, including entrepreneurship programs, vocational training, access to markets, digital platforms, and policy interventions that support youth-friendly agricultural policies and strategies. Furthermore, the review highlights the diverse impacts of youth engagement in agriculture, including contributions to food production, innovation, rural development, poverty alleviation, and sustainable livelihoods. Overall, this scoping review provides valuable insights into the complexities surrounding youth participation in agriculture and underscores the need for multifaceted approaches to address barriers, leverage opportunities, and harness the potential of young people in shaping the future of agriculture and rural communities. Future research directions and implications for policy and practice are also discussed.

Efficiency of BRICS countries in sustainable development: a comparative data envelopment analysis

Purpose This study aims to assess the efficiency of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa (BRICS) countries in achieving sustainable development by analyzing their ability to convert resources and technological innovations into sustainable outcomes. Design/methodology/approach Using data envelopment analysis (DEA), the study evaluates the economic, environmental and social efficiency of BRICS countries over the period 2010–2018. It ranks these countries based on their sustainable development performance and compares them to the period 2000–2007. Findings The study reveals varied efficiency levels among BRICS countries. Russia and South Africa lead in certain sustainable development aspects. South Africa excels in environmental sustainability, whereas Brazil is efficient in resource utilization for sustainable growth. China and India, despite economic growth, face challenges such as pollution and lower quality of life. Research limitations/implications The study’s findings are constrained by the DEA methodology and the selection of variables. It highlights the need for more nuanced research incorporating recent global events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical shifts. Practical implications Insights from this study can inform targeted and effective sustainability strategies in BRICS nations, focusing on areas such as industrial quality improvement, employment conditions and environmental policies. Social implications The study underscores the importance of balancing economic growth with social and environmental considerations, highlighting the need for policies addressing inequality, poverty and environmental degradation. Originality/value This research provides a unique comparative analysis of BRICS countries’ sustainable development efficiency, challenging conventional perceptions and offering a new perspective on their progress.

Writing about smart cities in Indonesia: A bibliometric analysis

This study analyzed the development, current patterns, and main focuses in the field of smart cities in Indonesia by conducting a bibliometric analysis of 133 academic articles. The study used the Scopus database to collect data and the Bibliometrix R programme to conduct a detailed bibliometric analysis. The findings revealed a yearly rise in publications, suggesting a growing scholarly focus on smart cities. The inquiry explored the relationships between authors, their affiliations, and countries, identifying the most prominent journals and influential publications in this field. Keyword analysis revealed the main topics and subjects, which greatly aided in the strategic planning and execution of smart city projects by identifying gaps, patterns, and potential areas for further investigation. This bibliometric analysis provides detailed insight into the study on smart cities in Indonesia, showing a transition from an initial emphasis on technology and sustainability to a wider range of sustainable development and sociological aspects. The findings emphasize the need for interdisciplinary approaches and increased regional and international partnerships to tackle complex urban challenges. This study promotes a holistic view of the smart city that combines technological advancement with community involvement and urban quality of life.

Buyer-Backed Purchase Order and Advance Payment Discount Financing Under Carbon Trade Revenue-Sharing Contract

The promotion of low-carbon production is a crucial aspect of sustainable development, and carbon trading has proven to be an effective means of achieving this goal. However, the limited capital hinders small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from achieving low-carbon production. Thus, this paper examines a low-carbon supply chain comprising a financially constrained manufacturer and a well-funded retailer. We propose a game-theoretical model that addresses the financial constraints of the manufacturer through buyer-backed purchase order financing (BPOF) or advance payment discount (APD) with carbon trading revenue-sharing contracts. We investigate the determination of pricing and carbon emission reduction strategies by firms utilizing diverse financing models. We find that the total amount of carbon emission reduction increases with the manufacturer’s carbon trade revenue-sharing ratio. The financing rate of BPOF has a negative impact on the amount of carbon emission reduction, while the discount rate of APD will not affect either the carbon emission reduction or the revenue of the supply chain. Among the two financing strategies, APD is optimal for maximizing profit and promoting low-carbon development throughout the supply chain.

Urban energy consumption is a critical aspect of sustainable urban development, with technological innovations playing a pivotal role in shaping energy usage patterns. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of urban energy consumption dynamics in relation to the adoption of technology across various sectors, including transportation, residential, industrial, and commercial domains. Through extensive data collection and advanced statistical analyses, we investigate the correlation between technology adoption rates and energy consumption behaviors in urban areas. Our findings reveal a strong positive correlation between technology adoption rates and reduced energy consumption across sectors. We employ spatial analyses to identify localized successes, shedding light on regions where technology-driven initiatives have significantly lowered energy demands. These insights offer valuable guidance for urban planners and policymakers aiming to implement targeted interventions and replicate effective strategies. Furthermore, the paper emphasizes the transformative potential of innovative solutions, ranging from smart infrastructure to industrial automation, in promoting energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. By fostering the integration of such technologies, cities can mitigate their carbon footprint, enhance energy resilience, and create more livable environments for residents. This research contributes to the discourse on urban energy transitions and provides actionable insights for urban policymakers and stakeholders striving for a greener, more sustainable urban future.

Assessment of the Quality of Tap Water Intended for Potability Using the IQE Water Quality Index Case of the Municipality of Sendjas (Algeria)

Water quality is an important criterion for meeting water demand and supply. Ensuring freshwater quality that meets human and ecological needs is therefore an important aspect of integrated environmental management and sustainable development. The objective of this study is to monitor and evaluate the quality of the water distributed to the municipality of Sendjas from the Sidi Yakoub dam to the consumer using the index of water quality which includes 10 parameters. (PH, TDS, nitrate, sulphate, bicarbonate, chloride, calcium, potassium, sodium and magnesium). Physico-chemical analyses were carried out on samples taken from the Sidi Yakoub dam, a reservoir which distributes water to the municipality of Sendjas called reservoir 500, and a sample from the house of one consumer directly from the tap. The results of the analyses obtained during our work show that there is a slight difference in the latter, but the quality of the physico-chemical water remains good and consumable at the level of two stations (Sidi Yakoub Dam, Reservoir 500) and Bad quality of the station which represents the municipality of Sendjas, the latter is due to the high content of chloride and the degradation of distribution networks.

The BREEAM, the LEED and the DGNB certifications as an aspect of sustainable development

Some of the most significant problems of industrialised countries are increasing consumerism, the growing demand for more and more energy and other natural resources, and the depletion of non-renewable sources. The visible consequences are environmental pollution and global warming. To address these issues, there is growing pressure on the use of alternative energy sources, the use of natural resources and the introduction of new technologies. The use of multi-criteria building certification systems, which evaluate their performance, is becoming increasingly common in the building industry. The BREEAM, the LEED, and the DGNB are among the most popular methods for assessing sustainable architecture, and they project management tools. The main task of the article was to define and describe the impact of documents related to sustainable development certificates on contemporary design and living and working conditions, as well as to demonstrate the relationship between the quality of architecture and environmental protection. Another goal is to indicate how dynamically the number of certificates issued in Poland is increasing. The study used the necessary research methods: analysis and criticism of applicable documents and literature, as well as an intuitive method based on personal experience. The scope of the work includes a discussion of the most frequently obtained certificates: the BREEAM, the LEED, and the DGNB, the achievements of which prove the use of solutions conducive to sustainable development.

Limited financial resources, vast and difficult terrains, and sparse population density pose significant hurdles. Additionally, socio-cultural aspects and community dynamics influence the acceptance and sustainability of electrification projects. Understanding and addressing these challenges is crucial for the success of rural electrification initiatives. On the policy front, various nations and international organizations have implemented diverse approaches to tackle these challenges. This review examines the effectiveness of different policy frameworks, exploring their impact on the speed and sustainability of rural electrification. Policies encompass financial incentives, regulatory frameworks, and technology deployment strategies, with an emphasis on fostering public-private partnerships. The paper also delves into case studies from different regions, providing insights into both successful and unsuccessful attempts at rural electrification. Examining these cases helps identify common patterns, lessons learned, and best practices that can inform future initiatives. Successful projects often involve a combination of innovative financing models, community engagement, and the integration of renewable energy sources tailored to local conditions. This paper underscores the importance of a holistic and context-specific approach to rural electrification. Global policymakers, practitioners, and stakeholders can draw valuable lessons from both challenges and successes to refine strategies and enhance the impact of rural electrification initiatives worldwide. As the world continues to strive for universal energy access, this review contributes to the ongoing dialogue on shaping effective policies and practices in the realm of rural electrification.

The Role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in E-Government: A Literature Review of Sustainable Development Aspects

The development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) makes the world more borderless and communication in various sectors easier. ICT has penetrated individual, organizational, and social barriers. The impact of ICT does not only occur in private companies or organizations but also public organizations. The application of E-Government is a form of ICT application in the public sector. E-Government is a process of using ICT as a new instrument in providing public services more effectively and efficiently. This study aims to provide an overview of the role of ICT in E-Government, which supports aspects of sustainable development in the economic, social, and environmental fields. The method used to collect research data is a literature review and data analysis techniques through a qualitative approach. The results of the study show that E-Government is able to support sustainable development from both economic, social, and environmental aspects.This research recommends that government agencies must continue to innovate, especially by involving ICT and e-government in their public services. It is important because the use of this technology can support sustainability issues in various fields. Then, various studies across sectors are also needed so that comparisons can be developed regarding the challenges that need to be faced in establishing cooperation.
