Employing popular heritage in the Iraqi theatrical actor’s performance of the play

In the history of Iraqi theater, popular heritage has always been a rich and abundant source of inspiration for artists. Heritage is considered an integral part of the cultural and social identity of the Iraqi people, as it carries within it values, traditions, and stories that constitute a large part of the collective consciousness. In this research, we will discuss how to employ popular heritage in the Iraqi theatrical actor’s performance of the play “The Thread and the Bird” as a model, as the actor aims to revive the heritage and present it in a way that is consistent with modern times, which helps to enhance cultural identity and connection to the roots, as popular heritage was used in the play The thread and the bird are touched in many ways, such as language, fashion, music, and dances. And motor performance. Through the above, the researcher will attempt to study this research in four chapters. The first chapter represents the methodological framework of the research problem around the following question: Was the Iraqi actor able to employ the popular heritage according to his motor and vocal tools in presenting the play The Thread and the Bird? Then the importance of the research and its goal through revealing and identifying the most important skills. The performance techniques that are compatible with the characters carrying the popular heritage in presenting the play The Thread and the Sparrow 0, then the limits of the research and definition of terminology. The second chapter, the theoretical framework, includes two sections: the first: the popular heritage (a historical view). The second section: the popular heritage and the performance of the theatrical actor, then what resulted from the theoretical framework. 베토벤 피아노 소나타 Op. 106『함머클라비어』의 현대음악적 의의:『La Hammerklavier』와의 비교조명을 바탕으로

This thesis aims to re-examine the artistic value and academic significance of Beethoven's Op. 106 『Hammerklavier』. To this end, this thesis adopted as its theoretical basis a review of the distinct elements and musical expressions of Op. 106 『Hammerklavier』and an analysis of musical quotation techniques applied to 『La Hammerklavier』. The analysis yields the following results. First, the novel fugue styles, including third relations and Neapolitan harmony in Op. 106『Hammerklavier』, can be evaluated as distinctive techniques that transform the established musical conventions. Second, 『La Hammerklavier』seeks to pay homage to Beethoven and his work Op. 106『Hammerklavier』through various approaches, including the technique of ‘musical quotation’. In conclusion, the creation based on the technique of ‘musical quotation’ expands the scope and domain of contemporary music compositions in various aspects, and the distinctive elements of Op. 106『Hammerklavier』serve as a source of artistic inspiration for subsequent composers, demonstrating its artistic value and significance through the fusion with modernity beyond the classical era. Additionally, practical and fundamental pedagogical suggestions focusing on tempo, pedaling, and trills for effective performance will provide valuable guidance to learners studying Op. 106『Hammerklavier』.

Herman Bang og det sydøstlige Europa – med særligt henblik på Østrig

This article presents an in-depth account of the Danish writer Herman Bang’s preoccupation with southeastern Europe and, in particular, Austria. Visiting the various countries served as a source of artistic inspiration but also presented Bang with material which he, also being a prolific journalist, could utilise for writing articles for various Danish newspapers. These articles, a large selection of which are quoted in the present article, contain snapshots of picturesque sceneries and cultural sites as well as commentaries on political issues during a period when a number of countries under the Austrian-Hungarian Empire were in the process of gaining national independence. Furthermore, the present article has traced and documented the instances where Bang in his fictional work includes observations from his many journeys to the southeastern countries as well as Austria. The article concludes with the first bibliography listing Bang’s works which over the years have been translated from Danish to Bulgarian, Czech, Hungarian and Romanian as well as texts published in Austria.

Divine Insights: Religious Influences in Albanian Literature

This paper aims to investigate the profound influences of Biblical and Koranic discourse on Albanian literature during a specific period, with a focus on the principal authors. The study adopts on applied research approach, employing textual analysis and comparative literary studies to examine the integration of oriental and occidental themes, motifs and conceptions in Albanian literature. By delving into the structural elements and elements of discourse influenced by codified beliefs, the research explores religious interplay within the literature.Through a thorough analysis of literary works, this study reveals that the Bible and Koran hold significant literary importance, with numerous authors drawing inspiration from these sacred texts. The research findings demonstrate the extensive utilization of motifs, literary figures, stylistic elements, events and characters from the Bible and the Koran in Albanian literature. Holy Scripture, embodying a noble and holy spirit, serves as inexhaustible source of artistic inspiration, vitality and creativity for prominent authors. Notably, the research highlights the prominence of Biblical events that portray the struggle for freedom, which have found expression in Albanian literature. This exploration sheds light on enduring influence of the Bible and the Koran on the cultural fabric of Albanian society.Based on the research findings, this study concludes that the integration of Biblical and Koranic discourse in Albanian literature reflects the deep-rooted Islamic and Christian culture within the Albanian psyche. The research underscores the significance of these sacred texts as sources of artistic inspiration and creativity, shaping the cultural tradition and civilization of Albanians. By uncovering the profound interplay between religion and literature, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the cultural and religious dynamics within Albanian literary works.

THE EAST PERCEIVED THROUGH WESTERN PERSPECTIVE: FAUSTO ZONARO AND ISTANBUL

For many centuries, Istanbul, as a city of culture, has been a source of inspiration for artists from many different countries. Italian artists were especially influenced by the Eastern world and reflected this influence in their work in almost every era. When we talk about "Western Orientalists on Ottoman lands", we doubtlessly first think of Italian Orientalists such as Gentile Bellini, Fausto Zonaro, Leonardo de Mango, Amadeo Preziosi, Salvatore Valeri, Luigi Acquarone, Raimondo D'Aronco, whose paths crossed through the Ottoman Empire, and who built bridges between these foreign cultures by depicting these exotic lands in their works. During the reign of Sultan Abdulhamit the Second, Fausto Zonaro (1854 – 1929) assumed the title of “Palace Artist” after the Italian artist Luigi Acquarone. Zonaro, as well as being recognized for his realistic depictions, became well known for introducing the newly emerging Western art movements in the Ottoman art circles during its initial stages and became influential by nurturing a new generation of young Ottoman artists by providing training. The way Zonaro perceived Istanbul and the local culture through an Italian perspective, and his difference from other Orientalist artists are crucial in making him a pioneering figure in the history of Turkish painting.

Migraine as a Source of Artistic Inspiration

This narrative review explores the intricate relationship between migraines and art, tracing historical examples and contemporary interpretations of how migraines, especially those with a visual aura, have influenced artists. Highlights how migraines may have shaped artistic inspiration, delving into notable, questionably migraine-infected figures such as Hildegard of Bingen, Giorgio de Chirico, Pablo Picasso, and Salvador Dali, examining how their experiences may have influenced their works. Furthermore, it addresses the emergence of ‘migraine art’ sponsored by the pharmaceutical industry, presenting the intersection between art, neuroscience, and public engagement. The diagnostic complexity and differentiation of migraines from epilepsy are also discussed, with a special focus on the symptoms of the visual aura and how this has been portrayed through various artistic representations, thus inviting further exploration of the relationship between neurological conditions and creative expression.

MARXISM AND AMOR INTELLECTUALIS: TOWARD A THEORY OF SOCIALIST CULTURE BY VOLODYMYR YURYNETS

The paper analyzes the methodological framework of the philosophy of culture and new literary criticism of the Ukrainian philosopher and literary critic Volodymyr Yurynets (1891—1937) within his article “To the Problem of Socialist Culture (Introduction to the book ‘Mykola Bazhan’).” His ideas testify to the powerful methodological searches in the field of Marxist criticism of the 1920s aimed at substantiating the nature of post-revolutionary culture. Balancing between Marxism and Western idealist philosophy, Yurynets brings elements of the latter into his philosophical Marxist criticism.
 While elaborating a model of new criticism, Yurynets substantiates perception based on a “fluxion of intellectual sympathy.” In this process, the recipient becomes an organ of “amor intellectualis, indifferent amazement.” Yurynets considers his philosophical criticism of culture to be a Marxist form of cultural philosophy. He asserts that literature is a form of philosophical thinking and argues that literary criticism armed with philosophy is a phenomenon completely different from academic literary criticism. Justifying philosophical criticism as an active and modeling force of the modern time, Yurynets appeals to the ideas of the literary critic Leonid Grossman, the literary theorist Pavel Medvedev, and the linguist Nikolai Marr. Yurynets’s concept comes down to the search for the meaning of art in relation to the “life world” of a man. At the same time, he interprets the discovery of the “living forces of the epoch” in the context of historical materialism. In an effort to purify aesthetic perception from subjectivity, psychology, and emotion, Yurynets actually adapts E. Husserl’s ‘phenomenological reduction’ and applies it to the aesthetic reception. The scholar also refers to reflexology and Freudian psychoanalysis as sources of artistic inspiration and interpretive ideas for contemporary philosophical criticism.

Pungryu: transcendent ways of seeing landscape

This study investigates the Korean practice of pungryu, a unique way of appreciating landscapes intertwining aesthetic enjoyment with spiritual and philosophical pursuits. Pungryu, deeply rooted in the quest for divine immortality and harmony with nature, is explored as a lens through which Koreans have traditionally interacted with their landscapes. The study employs a historical and cultural analysis, drawing upon various sources to trace the evolution and influence of pungryu on Korean landscape culture. Pungryu is revealed as not just a practice but a sophisticated cultural expression that has shaped the Korean understanding of nature and beauty. This expression is rich in symbolic and metaphorical content, serving as a conduit for artistic inspiration, empirical knowledge and national identity. The paper underscores the importance of pungryu in comprehending the broader concept of cultural landscapes, highlighting its role in the ongoing discourse on authenticity and cultural diversity within the heritage landscape context.

Harmony in Art: Sun Yinchang's Journey from Rural Realism to Contemporary Symbolism

The study explores the multifaceted artistic journey of Sun Yinchang, a self-taught "peasant painter" from rural northern China, whose fusion of realism and symbolism in oil paintings forms a captivating narrative. The study explores his unconventional artistic development, emphasizing his departure from academic paths and the attainment of professional competence through personal perception. Operating as an outsider within the artistic system, Sun's career as a freelance artist without a fixed income serves as a valuable case study for contemporary youth aspiring to become oil painters outside established institutional frameworks. His unwavering commitment to rural life, thematic continuity in his work, and symbolic representations of memory, such as corn and agricultural tools, distinguish him from stereotypical portrayals of "peasants" and secure recognition within the domestic art industry. The comprehensive exploration employs qualitative inquiry and visual analysis, drawing insights from interviews with Sun and meticulous examination of his celebrated series. The abstract further analyzes Sun Yinchang's distinctive realistic style, the interplay of compositional form, the "top-down" perspective, and the symbolic implications of his chosen motifs, providing sociological insights into art and offering inspiration for contemporary artists aligning their work with personal concepts.

Mykhailo Boichuk School of Ukrainian Monumentalism (1917–1937). To the 85th anniversary of the physical destruction of the school

The present study unveils the significance of the cultural and artistic pheno­menon known as the “School of Ukrainian Monumentalism” in the evolu­tion of Ukrainian fine arts. It characterizes the worldview, cultural, aesthetic, and artistic inspirations that contributed to the formation of the original, synthetic, and monumental artistic style of Ukrainian painting by Mykhailo Boichuk and his students. Furthermore, it explores how this style was fur­ther reflected in fresco compositions created between 1919 and 1935. The article explores the institutional aspects of the school’s activity and the transmission of professional experience across generations of artists. Drawing on archival materials and preserved photo reproductions, we re­construct the formation of creative ideas and the contributions of figures such as Timofii Boichuk, Mariia Trubetska, Vasyl Sedliar, Oksana Pavlenko, Kateryna Borodina, Antonina Tsimlova, Antonina Ivanova, Kyrylo Hvoz­ dyk, Mykola Rokytskyi, Manuel Shechtman, Maria Yunak, Onufrii Biziu­ kov, and Oleksandr Dovzhenko. The article also underscores the tragic fact of the destruction of the creative work of the “School of Ukrainian Monu­ mentalism” at the end of the 1930s.

Marketing sonified fragrance: Designing soundscapes for scent.

Auditory branding is undoubtedly becoming more important across a range of sectors. One area, in particular, that has recently seen significant growth concerns the introduction of music and soundscapes that have been specifically designed to match a particular scent (what one might think of as "audio scents" or "sonic scents"). This represents an exciting new approach to the sensory marketing of fragrance and for industries with strategic sensory goals, such as cosmetics. Crucially, techniques such as the semantic differential technique, as well as the emerging literature on crossmodal correspondences, offer both a mechanistic understanding of, and a practical framework for, those wishing to rigorously align the connotative meaning and conceptual/emotional/sensory associations of sound and scent. These developments have enabled those working in the creative industries to start moving beyond previously popular approaches to matching, or translating between the senses, that were traditionally often based on the idiosyncratic phenomenon of synaesthesia, toward a more scientific approach while nevertheless still enabling/requiring a healthy dose of artistic inspiration. In this narrative historical review, we highlight the various approaches to the systematic matching of sound with scent and review the various marketing activations that have appeared in this space recently.

Visual interference – artistic possibilities of linear mixed arrangements

The aim of the author of the article is to investigate the possibility of using the phenomenon of visual interference in architecture. The research is experimental and serves to develop a module consisting of two layers, which will be multiplied and placed on a glass façade. The research can be used to develop an image processing method using interference. In the introduction to the article, various forms of interference in graphics composed of linear elements are discussed. Examples of flat, non-transparent projects in graphics and painting are cited. Then, a group of spatial images was presented in the form of installations or placed on two layers of glass. Research aimed at developing a graphic layout to be placed on a glass façade is presented. The article briefly describes the creation of a module – a graphic element that is used to develop more complex compositions that can be used in a glass façade. This is a step towards creating a compendium of knowledge about this phenomenon and existing solutions. The results of our research can be an inspiration for artists and architects, as well as an incentive for designers and investors to use them in architecture.

On conservation of world heritage Beijing-Hangzhou grand canal for enhancing cultural ecosystem services

The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal carries unique social and cultural significance as a world cultural heritage, but with the acceleration of global urbanization, it has potentially severe environmental risks under continuous anthropogenic disturbances. Therefore, to protect the ecological and cultural values of the Grand Canal, it is necessary to assess the corresponding relationship of water quality to land use and the perception of ecosystem services that focus on cultural ecosystem services (CES). This study aims to analyze the water quality response to land use in the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, describe the land use types closely related to water quality, and propose corresponding management strategies for enhancing CES. This study investigated the impacts of land use structure and landscape pattern on water quality by calculating the correlation between land use structure and landscape pattern indices and water quality in buffer zones of different distances on both sides of the canal. The results show that green land dominates the land use structure and can effectively reduce water pollution in the canal. On the other hand, urban impervious surfaces showed a significant positive correlation with pollution contributing to low water quality. We accessed the impact of water quality on the perception of CES in the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and proposed optimization strategies for promoting CES. Both content analysis and thematic analysis were applied to analyze the impact of the water environment quality of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal on the perception of CES. We found that the perceptions of CES along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal are associated with the public’s opinions on its cultural heritage services and artistic inspiration services. The perceptions of CES are closely related to the quality of the water environment and riparian greenness, which affect the values of cultural heritage and conservation of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.

Physical Pain as a Source of Spiritual and Artistic Inspiration in Jackson Hlungwani’s Work

Jackson Hlungwani is a locally recognised South African artist and he is internationally acclaimed with a considerable amount of literature written about his life and work, highlighting his uniqueness distinct rural style (Leibhammer & Nel, 2022) and commercialised value (Lauwrens, 2007: 121-124). He was born around 1923 (according to his grandmother, it was during the time of the Kaiser’s war) (Burnett, 1989: 4). Having acknowledged his contribution to the arts, this paper analyses the man and his work from a different viewpoint, focusing on three aspects of his life namely the human, spiritual and artistic. However, these three aspects should not be considered three independently functioning sides of this man’s existence but three tightly interwoven elements. The research investigates how Hlungwani’s physical pain was embodied in his religious activities and wooden creations and how his suffering, caused by a chronic condition of damaged body tissue, was faced, accepted and assimilated to become a source of spiritual strength supporting his religious ideology and artistic inspiration guiding his remarkable creativity. This study highlights how this South African-born artist dealt with his chronic, somatic condition and turned it from a supernatural condemnation into a source of spiritual strength and creative inspiration. Therefore, through a comparative approach, the study uses relevant published and unpublished biographic material, justified critics and preserved manuscripts in libraries, the media, art museums and exhibitions to unpack the theme of physical pain as a source of spiritual and artistic inspiration in Jackson Hlungwani’s work.

Ice Patches and Obsidian Quarries: Integrating Research Through Collaborative Archaeology in Tahltan Territory

ABSTRACT This article presents the results of archaeological survey of ice patches in the vicinity of the vast obsidian quarries and artifact scatters found near Goat Mountain and the Kitsu Plateau in Mount Edziza Provincial Park, Tahltan Territory. During the survey, over 50 perishable artifacts were found, including stitched birch bark containers, wooden walking staffs, carved and beveled sticks, an atlatl dart foreshaft, and a stitched hide boot. Radiocarbon ages on 13 of the perishable artifacts reveal that they span the last 7000 years. These finds were made against a massive and stunning backdrop of scattered obsidian artifacts: bifaces, cores, flakes, and raw material nodules. This project collaborated with the Obsidian Discoveries Tahltan Tene Mehodihi Youth Group Hike and the “Our Ancestors’ Trail” museum exhibition. This collaboration resulted in connections between the archaeological results presented here, community learning, and artistic inspiration.

METHODICAL APPROACHES TO ABSTRACT PAINTING: INSIGHTS FROM ABHIJIT PATHAK

This research emphasises the manner in which Abhijit Pathak, an Indian artist, imbues his abstract paintings with energy through careful and precise techniques, capturing the profound essence of his thoughts. By analysing Pathak's creative process, the study endeavours to identify the strategies and methods he employs in his art. Through interviews with Pathak, this paper reveals his thought process and approach to painting, thereby providing invaluable insights into his art. He deploys a variety of materials and techniques to achieve the desired effect in his paintings, while his approach is marked by discipline and focus. This research illuminates the intricate interplay between cognitive processes, techniques, and outcomes in abstract painting, as observed through Pathak's artistic process. The findings affirm the value of Pathak's systematic approach as inspiration and guidance for other artists, empowering them to develop their unique visual language. His work exemplifies the importance of planning, preparation, and comprehensive knowledge of abstract painting methods and materials. By exploring Pathak's methodology, this paper aims to advance knowledge of abstract painting as a multifaceted and nuanced art form.

Iphigeneia Breathes: A Filmic Musing on the Winds, Breathing, Life, and the Imagination

Artistic inspiration drawn from scholarly and experiential research has led me to incorporate a personal approach to classical reception into my art films: in voiceovers and intertitles, I imagine new endings for ancient stories. Imagination becomes a powerfully direct element in my films, when combined with my own experience of Greece, and scholarly research into aspects of Greek myths, plays, and language. This paper traces the evolution of my approach in three of short art films: from an anonymous, but often subjective narrator, implying my authorship; the clearly subjective perspective of the filmmaker inviting viewers to imagine; to my most recent film, a combination of an omniscient, almost neutral narrator with a first-person narrator who also invites imagination. While working on Iphigeneia Breathes, its breathing theme became unexpectedly entwined with contemporary events: George Floyd, saying he could not breathe, was murdered; the pandemic stole breath from millions of people; and gatherings of loud, close-packed, chanting crowds as precursors or loci of death became terrifying realities. My process, research, approach to reception and imagination ultimately brought personal and communal contemporary experience into interaction with ancient narrative.
