Alumina - Stabilized SEI and CEI in Potassium Metal Batteries.

Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanopowder is spin-coated onto both sides of commercial polypropene separator to create artificial solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and artificial cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) in potassium metal batteries (KMBs). This significantly enhances the stability, including of KMBs with Prussian Blue (PB) cathodes. For example, symmetric cells are stable after 1,000 cycles at 0.5 mA/cm2 - 0.5 mAh/cm2 and 3.0 mA/cm2 - 0.5 mAh/cm2. Alumina modified separators promote electrolyte wetting and increase ionic conductivity (0.59 vs. 0.2 mS/cm) and transference number (0.81 vs. 0.23). Cryo-stage focused ion beam (cryo-FIB) analysis of cycled modified anode demonstrates dense and planar electrodeposits, versus unmodified baseline consisting of metal filaments (dendrites) interspersed with pores and SEI. Alumina-modified CEI also suppresses elemental Fe crossover and reduces cathode cracking. Mesoscale modeling of metal - SEI interactions captures crucial role of intrinsic heterogeneities, illustrating how artificial SEI affects reaction current distribution, conductivity and morphological stability.

Elucidating the role of polar functional groups in fluorinated polymer artificial interphase for stable lithium anodes

The properties of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) are pivotal for stable lithium (Li) metal anodes. However, the process of formation and ion transport behavior of lithium fluoride (LiF) through the polar groups of organic fluorinated artificial SEI has not been clearly elucidated. Herein we demonstrate that the key role of polar functional groups in fluorinated polymer artificial SEI (FPASEI) is elucidated by using 2,2,2-trifluoroethylacrylate (TFEA) through radical polymerization. Density functional theory and ab initio molecular dynamics calculations demonstrate that the abundant CO polar groups in TFEA contribute a large number of electrons, thereby facilitating the degradation kinetics of CF bond cleavage in lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide salt to yield LiF. Moreover, the presence of CF, COC, and CO groups in TFEA facilitate the migration of Li+ towards interchain regions through cation-dipole interaction, leading to dendrite-free Li deposition. The implementation of FPASEI in a Li||Li cell results in 500 h of Li plating/stripping cycling at 1 mA cm−2 and retains a capacity retention rate of 80 % after 265 cycles in Li||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cell. This study not only emphasizes the critical role of polar groups in artificial SEI but also presents a promising strategy for achieving stable Li metal batteries.

Constructing lithiophilic sites–rich artificial solid electrolyte interphase to enable dendrite−free and corrosion−free lithium–sulfur batteries

An artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) with lithiophilic sites and chemical bonds anchoring lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) has been developed as a potential solution to protect the lithium (Li) metal anode of Lithium−sulfur (Li–S) batteries. This strategy aims to guide consistent Li deposition and relieve lithium corrosion. Herein, the evolution process of lithiophilic sites based on aluminum fluoride (AlF3) in an artificial SEI is disclosed in Li–S batteries with metal−based lithiophilic sites. The polyester polymer (PMMA and PPC)/AlF3 artificial SEI (MPAF−SEI) was homogeneously anchored on Li anode by in−situ polymerization. The conversion of AlF3 into Li–Al and LiF lithiophilic sites effectively reduce the Li nucleation overpotential and prevents the formation of Li dendrites. At the same time, the polymer can anchor LiPSs by chemical bonds and prevents Li corrosion. The optimized MPAF−SEI protected Li demonstrates excellent stability for over 3000 h at a capacity of 1 mAh cm−2 in Li || Li symmetric cells. The Li–S battery with low N/P (4) exhibits a capacity of 532.6 mAh g −1 over 300 cycles lifespan at 0.5C.

Biomass-derived polymer as a flexible “zincophilic–hydrophobic” solid electrolyte interphase layer to enable practical Zn metal anodes

Aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) face significant challenges stemming from Zn dendrite growth and water-contact attack, primarily due to the lack of a well-designed solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) to safeguard the Zn anode. Herein, we report a bio-mass derived polymer of chitin on Zn anode (Zn@chitin) as a novel and robust artificial SEI layer to boost the Zn anode rechargeability. The polymeric chitin SEI layer features both zincophilic and hydrophobic characteristics to target the suppressed dendritic Zn formation as well as the water-induced side reactions, thus harvesting a dendrite-free and corrosion-resistant Zn anode. More importantly, this polymeric interphase layer is strong and flexible accommodating the volume changes during repeated cycling. Based on these benefits, the Zn@chitin anode demonstrates prolonged cycling performance surpassing 1300 h under an ultra-large current density of 20 mA cm−2, and a long cycle life of 680 h with a record-high zinc utilization rate of 80 %. Besides, the assembled Zn@chitin/V2O5 full batteries reveal excellent capacity retention and rate performance under practical conditions, proving the reliability of our proposed strategy for industrial AZIBs. Our research offers valuable insights for constructing high-performance AZIBs, and simultaneously realizes the high-efficient use of cheap biomass from a “waste-to-wealth” concept.

The improvement of electrochemical performance by mixing InF3 in Li5.3PS4.3Cl1.7 solid electrolyte

All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) employing solid electrolytes (SE) are currently gaining attention as next-generation energy storage devices. Solid electrolytes exhibit higher energy densities and operation across a wide temperature range than liquid electrolytes. The solid electrolyte acts as a separator, providing higher mechanical strength than polymer separators. This helps prevent cell deterioration and short circuit issues caused by lithium dendrite growth during charge – discharge cycles. Consequently, lithium metal, previously challenging to apply in conventional lithium-ion batteries, can be utilized as an anode electrode material. Sulfide-based solid electrolytes offer advantageous mechanical properties and high ionic conductivity. However, their narrow chemical/electrochemical stability window poses challenges. During the charging-discharging process of a battery with a lithium metal anode, a reduction decomposition reaction of the solid electrolyte occurs. On the other hand, Lithium Fluoride (LiF) exhibits low electronic conductivity due to a wide band gap but has a broad electrochemical stability window. In this study, we prepared a mixture of Li5.3PS4.3Cl1.7 with InF3 to generate an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) containing LiF. We confirmed the structural properties using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). The XRD pattern showed the maintenance of the argyrodite structure, with only an increase in the peak intensity corresponding to InF3. The optimized solid electrolyte-based ASSB demonstrated a higher initial discharge capacity of 172.8 mAh/g, a coulombic efficiency of 78.54 %, and a capacity retention rate of 93.6 %, outperforming ASSBs based on the bare solid electrolyte (Li5.3PS4.3Cl1.7).

Integrating Lithium Sulfide as a Single Ionic Conductor Interphase for Stable All-Solid-State Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

As a very prospective solid-state electrolyte, Li10GeP2S12 (LGPS) exhibits high ionic conductivity comparable to liquid electrolytes. However, severe self-decomposition and Li dendrite propagation of LGPS will be triggered due to the thermodynamic incompatibility with Li metal anode. Herein, by adopting a facile chemical vapor deposition method, an artificial solid electrolyte interphase composed of Li2S is proposed as a single ionic conductor to promote the interface stability of LGPS toward Li. The good electronic insulation coupled with ionic conduction property of Li2S effectively blocks electron transfer from Li to LGPS while enabling smooth passage of Li ions. Meanwhile, the generated Li2S layer remains good interface compatibility with LGPS, which is verified by the stable Li-plating/stripping operation for over 500h at 0.15mAcm-2. Consequently, the all-solid-state Li-S batteries (ASSLSBs) with a Li2S layer demonstrate superb capacity retention of 90.8% at 0.2mAcm-2 after 100cycles. Even at the harsh condition of 90 °C, the cell can deliver a high reversible capacity of 1318.8mAhg-1 with decent capacity retention of 88.6% after 100cycles. This approach offers a new insight for interface modification between LGPS and Li and the realization of ASSLSBs with stable cycle life.

Manipulating the diffusion energy barrier at the lithium metal electrolyte interface for dendrite-free long-life batteries.

Constructing an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on lithium metal electrodes is a promising approach to address the rampant growth of dangerous lithium morphologies (dendritic and dead Li0) and low Coulombic efficiency that plague development of lithium metal batteries, but how Li+ transport behavior in the SEI is coupled with mechanical properties remains unknown. We demonstrate here a facile and scalable solution-processed approach to form a Li3N-rich SEI with a phase-pure crystalline structure that minimizes the diffusion energy barrier of Li+ across the SEI. Compared with a polycrystalline Li3N SEI obtained from conventional practice, the phase-pure/single crystalline Li3N-rich SEI constitutes an interphase of high mechanical strength and low Li+ diffusion barrier. We elucidate the correlation among Li+ transference number, diffusion behavior, concentration gradient, and the stability of the lithium metal electrode by integrating phase field simulations with experiments. We demonstrate improved reversibility and charge/discharge cycling behaviors for both symmetric cells and full lithium-metal batteries constructed with this Li3N-rich SEI. These studies may cast new insight into the design and engineering of an ideal artificial SEI for stable and high-performance lithium metal batteries.

Organic Anodes with Nearly 100% Initial Coulombic Efficiency Enabled by Wet‐Chemically Constructed Artificial Solid‐Electrolyte Interphase Film toward High‐Energy‐Density Organic Full Batteries

AbstractLithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) built on inorganic anodes have achieved great commercial success. By contrast, the practical application of organic anode materials encounters key bottlenecks including electronic insulation, high solubility, and poor initial coulombic efficiency (ICE). Among them, improving ICEs (normally 30–60%) faces enormous challenges in both theory and technology, and there has been no substantial breakthrough yet. Herein, a wet chemical pretreatment technology to increase the ICE of maleic acid (MA)‐based anodes from 43.2% to nearly 100% is proposed for the first time, and this strategy demonstrates universal applicability. Typically, the wet chemical pretreatment involves reacting with lithium‐biphenyl to form LixMA intermediates (x = 4–6) and further forming a compact artificial solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) film through the spontaneous reaction between active LixMA and battery organic electrolytes. This wet chemically‐constructed artificial SEI layer can almost completely suppress lithium loss in the initial cycle of the MA electrode and significantly boost the actual output energy density, rate capability, and cycling durability of MA anode‐based full batteries. Significantly, the study further demonstrated that a series of organic anode materials with high ICEs can be achieved through similar wet chemical pretreatment. This work will open up the true application of high‐ICE organic anodes in LIBs.

Dynamic Interfacial Protection via Molecularly Tailored Copolymer for Durable Artificial Solid Electrolyte Interphase in Lithium Metal Batteries

AbstractThe serious dendrite formation and safety hazards associated with side reactions hinder the practical application of lithium metal batteries. A molecular customization strategy based on both physical and chemical properties is reported. A copolymer of acrylamide and hexafluorobutyl acrylate molecules is used as an artificial solid electrolyte interface(ASEI) for lithium metal to achieve dynamic interface protection during cycling. The amide group serves as the rigid unit, while the hexafluorobutyl group serves as the flexible unit, and imparts excellent mechanical properties to the copolymer. Synergistically abundant C─F bonds exhibit excellent water and oxygen resistance and have good electrolyte affinity. The ester and amide groups serve as amphiphilic sites for Li+ and PF6−, regulating the ion flux at the interface and achieving dendrite‐free lithium deposition. During cycling, the organic–inorganic composite SEI dynamically evolves to safeguard the lithium metal, preventing undue electrolyte consumption. The copolymer achieves stable cycling for 1500 and 950 h at 1 and 2 mA cm−2, respectively. It demonstrates excellent performance with LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 and LiFePO4 cathodes. This study introduces a new approach to designing polymers at the molecular level to optimize the physical properties/chemical activity of lithium metal interfaces.

Li3N/SiO2 modified 3D collectors to extend the cycle life of lithium anode

Despite the many benefits of lithium-metal anodes in next-generation lithium-metal batteries, they are limited by their infinite volume expansion and lithium dendrite growth. In this study, we propose a novel method for producing stable lithium-metal anodes by first coating a Cu current collector with a thin insulating silica layer, then laser etching to create holes where lithium deposition can take place. Additionally, an artificial solid electrolyte interphase layer of Li3N, which is generated in situ on the deposited lithium metal surface can reduced electrolyte consumption and promote uniform lithium deposition, and the confined space within the holes prevent dendrite formation. The above design realizes the use of limited lithium and improves the utilization of lithium metal while increasing the safety of the cells. The 3D Cu supported Li anode exhibited stable average coulombic efficiency of 99.8 % for 300 cycles at a current density of 1 Ma cm−2. Specifically, full cells made of such a 3D Cu anode coupled with a LiFePO4 cathode exhibited a capacity of 125 mA h g−1 after 250 cycles (low N/P capacity ratio of 2.38), providing a dendrite-free lithium metal anode.

Recent Progress in Surface Modification for Anti-corrosive/dendritic Zinc Metal anodes toward Aqueous Batteries

Aqueous zinc metal batteries (AZMBs) have been studied as feasible alternatives for lithium-ion batteries due to their numerous advantages including relatively high safety, cost efficiency, abundant sources, and water compatibility. Despite the remarkable merits of AZMBs, the Zn dendrite growth and severe side reactions such as Zn corrosion and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) can easily occur on the Zn surface, which has been considered as a critical problem that provokes short circuits and ultimately leads to AZMB failures. To effectively alleviate these drawbacks, innumerable methodologies focusing on the surface modification of Zn anodes were investigated. In this paper, two representative surface modification strategies ((1) the construction of artificial solid electrolyte interphase of Zn anode, (2) the introduction of uniform Zn electrodeposition inducing layer on the Zn surface) for solving the Zn anodic problems will be reviewed in various aspects.

Achieving Long-Cycle-Life Zinc-Ion Batteries through a Zincophilic Prussian Blue Analogue Interphase.

The practical application of rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) has been severely hindered by detrimental dendrite growth, uncontrollable hydrogen evolution, and unfavorable side reactions occurring at the Zn metal anode. Here, we applied a Prussian blue analogue (PBA) material K2Zn3(Fe(CN)6)2 as an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), by which the plentiful -C≡N- ligands at the surface and the large channels in the open framework structure can operate as a highly zincophilic moderator and ion sieve, inducing fast and uniform nucleation and deposition of Zn. Additionally, the dense interface effectively prevents water molecules from approaching the Zn surface, thereby inhibiting the hydrogen-evolution-resultant side reactions and corrosion. The highly reversible Zn plating/stripping is evidenced by an elevated Coulombic efficiency of 99.87% over 600 cycles in a Zn/Cu cell and a prolonged lifetime of 860 h at 5 mA cm-2, 2 mAh cm-2 in a Zn/Zn symmetric cell. Furthermore, the PBA-coated Zn anode ensures the excellent rate and cycling performance of an α-MnO2/Zn full cell. This work provides a simple and effective solution for the improvement of the Zn anode, advancing the commercialization of aqueous ZIBs.

A Triply-Periodic-Minimal-Surface Structured Interphase based on Fluorinated Polymers Strengthening High-energy Lithium Metal Batteries.

The challenge of constructing a mechanically robust yet lightweight artificial solid-electrolyte interphase layer on lithium (Li) anodes highlights a trade-off between high battery safety and high energy density. Inspired by the intricate microstructure of the white sea urchin, we first develop a polyvinyl fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) interfacial layer with a triple periodic minimal surface structure (TPMS) that could offer maximal modulus with minimal weight. This design endows high mechanical strength to an ordered porous structure, effectively reduces local current density, polarization, and internal resistance, and stabilizes the anode interface. At a low N/P ratio of ~3, using LiFePO4 as the cathode, Li anodes protected by TPMS-structured PVDF-HFP achieve an extremely low capacity-fading-rate of approximately 0.002 % per cycle over 200 cycles at 1 C, with an average discharge capacity of 142 mAh g-1. Meanwhile, the TPMS porous structure saves 50 wt % of the interfacial layer mass, thereby enhancing the energy density of the battery. The TPMS structure is conducive to large-scale additive manufacturing, which will provide a reference for the future development of lightweight, high-energy-density secondary batteries.

In-situ growth of hydrophobic zinc succinate interphase with high ionic conductivity toward stable zinc anodes

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are a promising solution for energy storage due to their affordability, high performance, environmental friendliness, and excellent safety features. However, zinc metal anodes are prone to capacity degradation and short circuits due to side reactions and dendrite growth during cycling. To address this issue, a dual-function artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) made of zinc succinate complex (ZnSA) is in-situ constructed on zinc anodes by a simple and cost-effective soaking approach. This interphase is hydrophobic and highly ionic conductive (4.5 mS cm−1). It has a low electronic conductivity (1.6 mS cm−1) and a large Zn2+ transfer number (0.63). The hydrophobic SEI progressively represses water-induced side reactions, lowers zinc nucleation overpotential, accelerates zinc ion diffusion, and regulates homogeneous zinc deposition. As a result, the ZnSA@Zn symmetric cell achieves an impressive lifespan of 4450 h at 1 mA cm−2 for 0.5 mAh cm−2, which is significantly better than the bare zinc cell and superior to many recently reported zinc anodes. Furthermore, the V2O5//ZnSA@Zn batteries exhibit outstanding rate performance and remarkable long-term operation stability for 2000 cycles at 1 A/g. This innovative and cost-effective strategy opens up new possibilities for developing high-performance aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

In Situ Grown Coordination-Supramolecular Layer Holding 3D Charged Channels for Highly Reversible Zn Anodes.

Dynamic reversible noncovalent interactions make supramolecular framework (SF) structures flexible and designable. A three-dimensional (3D) growth of such frameworks is beneficial to improve the structure stability while maintaining unique properties. Here, through the ionic interaction of the polyoxometalate cluster, coordination of zinc ions with cationic terpyridine, and hydrogen bonding of grafted carboxyl groups, the construction of a 3D SF at a well-crystallized state is realized. The framework can grow in situ on the Zn surface, further extending laterally into a full covering without defects. Relying on the dissolution and the postcoordination effects, the 3D SF layer is used as an artificial solid electrolyte interphase to improve the Zn-anode performance. The uniformly distributed clusters within nanosized pores create a negatively charged nanochannel, accelerating zinc ion transfer and homogenizing zinc deposition. The 3D SF/Zn symmetric cells demonstrate high stability for over 3000 h at a current density of 5 mA cm-2.

Phase Inversion‐Induced Porous Polymer Coating for High Rate and Stable Zinc Anode

AbstractPolymer coatings are emerged as promising candidates for zinc anode artificial solid electrolyte interphase (ASEI) owing to their barrier effect and zincophilicity. However, the poor ionic conductivity of conventional polymer coatings limits their application. Herein, inspired by epidermis function, a porous poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) coating is fabricated to stabilize Zn anode via a novel phase inversion method. The modified Zn anode delivers a remarkable lifespan of over 4000 h at 1 mA cm−2, 1 mAh cm−2, and 120 h at 20 mA cm−2, 20 mAh cm−2 in symmetrical cells. Moreover, porous PMMA‐Zn||NVO full cell also exhibits an excellent cycling stability over 500 cycles at 1 A g−1 as well as an ultralong lifespan exceeding 5000 cycles at 5 A g−1. The excellent cycling stability and rate performance are mainly attributed to the avoided side reactions by the coating protection, as well as the enhanced diffusion and reaction kinetics derived from the good zincophilicity and porous structure of porous PMMA. The facile and universal method for fabricating porous polymer ASEI provides a new insight for the application of conventional polymer materials in Zn anode protection.

Mechanically Interlocked Interphase with Energy Dissipation and Fast Li-Ion Transport for High-Capacity Lithium Metal Batteries.

Constructing an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (ASEI) on Li metal anodes (LMAs) is a potential strategy for addressing the dendrite issues. However, the mechanical fatigue of the ASEI caused by stress accumulation under the repeated deformation from the Li plating/stripping is not taken seriously. Herein, this work introduces a mechanically interlocked [an]daisy chain network (DC MIN) into the ASEI to stabilize the Li metal/ASEI interface by combining the functions of energy dissipation and fast Li-ion transport. The DC MIN featured by large-range molecular motions is cross-linked via efficient thiol-ene click chemistry; thus, the DC MIN has flexibility and excellent mechanical properties. As an ASEI, the crown ether units in DC MIN not only interact with the dialkylammonium of a flexible chain, forming the energy dissipation behavior but also coordinate with Li ion to support the fast Li-ion transport in DC MIN. Therefore, a stable 2800h-symmetrical cycling (1mA cm-2 ) and an excellent 5 C-rate (full cell with LiFePO4 ) performance are achieved by DC MIN-based ASEI. Furthermore, the 1-Ah pouch cell (LiNi0.88 Co0.09 Mn0.03 O2 cathode) with DC MIN-coated LMA exhibits improved capacity retention (88%) relative to the Control. The molecular design of DC MIN provides new insights into the optimization of an ASEI for high-energy LMAs.

Synergistic Cation-π Interactions and PEDOT-Based Protective Double-Layer for High Performance Zinc Anode.

Ensuring effective and controlled zinc ion transportation is crucial for functionality of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and overall performance in zinc-based battery systems. Herein the first-ever demonstration of incorporate cation-π interactions are provided in the SEI to effectively facilitate uniform zinc ion flux. The artificial SEI design involves the immobilization of 4-amino-p-terphenyl (TPA), a strong amphiphilic cation-π interaction donor, as a monolayer onto a conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) matrix, which enable the establishment of a robust network of cation-π interactions. Through a carefully-designed interfacial polymerization process, a high-quality, large-area, robust is achieved, thin polymeric TPA/PEDOT (TP) film for the use of artificial SEI. Consequently, this interphase exhibits exceptional cycling stability with low overpotential and enables high reversibility of Zn plating/stripping. Symmetrical cells with TP/Zn electrodes can be cycled for more than 3200 hours at 1mAcm-2 and 1 mAhcm-2 . And the asymmetric cells can cycle 3000 cycles stably with a high Coulomb efficiency of 99.78%. Also, under the extreme conditions of lean electrolyte and low N/P ratio, the battery with TP protective layer can still achieve ultra-stable cycle.

Engineering a lithium silicate-based artificial solid electrolyte interphase for enhanced rechargeable lithium metal batteries

The main motivation for replacing lithium-ion batteries with lithium metal batteries is to achieve a higher energy density by using the metallic lithium anode. One of the major challenges with rechargeable lithium metal batteries is the formation of lithium dendrites and dead lithium during repeated cycling. Another challenge is the formation of the unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the surface of the lithium metal electrode, which can reduce battery efficiency and cycle life. In the present work, two different lithium silicates (Li2Si2O5 and Li2SiO3) are successfully synthesized and implemented as an artificial SEI layer via a simple dry coating method. The lithium silicate artificial SEI layer improves the stability of lithium metal batteries by reducing unwanted surface reactions, optimizing ion transport kinetics, and protecting the lithium metal anode from mechanical deformation and unstable SEI formation during extended cycling. This laminated lithium anode structure can be an effective design for the future development of rechargeable lithium metal batteries.
