Didactic prototype of a robotic manufacturing cell to program welding trajectories in a frame

This project shows the integration of a didactic prototype of a robotic manufacturing cell for the programming of welding trajectories in a chassis. The purpose of this project is to integrate the robotic cell through the interaction of the controller of an industrial robot, a programmable logic controller (PLC) and a power transmission system for the positioning of a chassis for didactic purposes for students studying engineering in the area of Industrial Automation. To carry out the project, a scale chassis for a tractor and its support base was first manufactured, then the control of a stepper motor was carried out through a SIMATIC S7-1200 CPU 1214C PLC and a microstep driver module. The programming software COSIMIR from FESTO was also used to program the welding trajectories in a Mitsubishi RV-2AJ robot with 5 degrees of freedom that interacts with the PLC through input and output digital modules. Finally, it was possible to obtain a functional prototype of a robotic manufacturing cell that can be used for teaching robot trajectory programming and that is closely related to industrial machines.

A Survey on Scheduling Based Mac Protocol for Congestion Minimization in Internet of Things (IoT)

Recently, in Internet era the most common technology ubiquitous to develop smart environment is Internet of things (IoT) and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs).These technologies deployed enormously to formulate wide applications in area of Smart homes, Industrial automation, and security destined applications and information trailing. The huge development in wireless technology is due to great exploration in MEMS concept and Embedded Systems. Huge evolution in this technique leads to access different Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol and this protocol used to access multiple nodes peculiarly in wireless channel. The projected MAC protocol designed to enhance network lifetime. Essentially, the network leads to lot of congestion due to non-availability of IoT equipment and less available resources for various environmental applications. The simulated performance ensures that the conventional algorithm limits their dynamic service quality for IoT based applications. The above setbacks motivate the researches to develop the survey in existing scheduling based MAC protocol by highlighting their parameters.

Regulating Scheduler (RSC): A Novel Solution for IEEE 802.1 Time Sensitive Network (TSN)

Emerging applications such as industrial automation, in-vehicle, professional audio-video, and wide area electrical utility networks require strict bounds on the end-to-end network delay. Solutions so far to such a requirement are either impractical or ineffective. Flow based schedulers suggested in a traditional integrated services (IntServ) framework are O(N) or O(log N), where N is the number of flows in the scheduler, which can grow to tens of thousands in a core router. Due to such complexity, class-based schedulers are adopted in real deployments. The class-based systems, however, cannot provide bounded delays in networks with cycle, since the maximum burst grows infinitely along the cycled path. Attaching a regulator in front of a scheduler to limit the maximum burst is considered as a viable solution. International standards, such as IEEE 802.1 time sensitive network (TSN) and IETF deterministic network (DetNet) are adopting this approach as a standard. The regulator in TSN and DetNet, however, requires flow state information, therefore contradicts to the simple class-based schedulers. This paper suggests non-work conserving fair schedulers, called ‘regulating schedulers’ (RSC), which function as a regulator and a scheduler at the same time. A deficit round-robin (DRR) based RSC, called nw-DRR, is devised and proved to be both a fair scheduler and a regulator. Despite the lower complexity, the input port-based nw-DRR is shown to perform better than the current TSN approach, and to bind the end-to-end delay within a few milliseconds in realistic network scenarios.

Compact Portable Industrial Automation Kit for Vocational School and Industrial Training

This Paper presents a compact and portable kit for learning on industrial automation practice for vocational schools and training industry. The kit is compactly designed with reference to basic of standard competences in industrial automation areas. They are PLC programming, PLC input and output wiring, motor control and pneumatic cylinder control. The components used are standard part in industry field. In addition to compact design, the second concept is portable, so the selection of components and layout should be done carefully so that the dimensions of the kit can be maintained at a certain size. This kit has 41 x 23 x 11.8 cm and weight 6.76 kg weight that can be easily carried or to be stored in the cabin of the aircraft during the training trip.

Supervision and Control Architecture for CNC Machine TOOL Using Rapid Prototyping

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine tools are high precision milling devices largely employed due to their high precision and simultaneous positioning and speed control of each machine axis. The main objective of this paper is to develop a virtual environment using rapid prototyping tools focusing on its implementation complexity and on the final quality result of each alternative. This work proposes applications in the devices of industrial machine tools that feature control architecture and open supervision, which can be integrated into different applications of the Industrial Automation (sensor, actuators, vision system and others) using tools for rapid prototyping of embedded control systems. The development of this research work enabled integrating knowledge in the different areas of engineering, which resulted in the implementation of a supervision and control system. Finally, this work allowed developing an open environment to capacitate professionals involved in projects in the area of industrial automation, where the main concepts and industrial problems can be verified and validated, while assisting in the analysis and implementation of strategies to develop these applications.

Design and Analysis of Brushless Doubly Fed Induction Generator

Abstract Brushless Doubly Fed Induction Generator (BDFIG) is one of the upcoming machines which is under research study to be used in offshore windfarms as it has many advantages over the conventional machines. Electromagnetism, the study of electric and magnetic fields plays the vital role in the design of machines. Electric machines are used in novel applications around the world, driven by the need for greater power efficiency in the transportation, aerospace and defense, and industrial automation areas. It is difficult to design a machine to meet all the performance criteria. ANSYS Maxwell software is a powerful tool to analyze all the relevant performance indices related to machine design. Finite element method is used in this software for the accurate analysis of the modeled machine. In this paper, design of 1.1 kW Brushless Doubly Fed Induction Generator (BDFIG) for 2/6 pole configuration and 4/8 pole configuration are done and analysis of the configurations are carried out using ANSYS Maxwell software.

Heterogeneous PLC Control Communications and Fault Intelligent Diagnosis

As an industrial control computer,PLC has been widely used in industrial automation area. Through the bus interface module or industrial Ethernet interface module, PLC can communicate with the master PLC, and realize fault intelligent diagnosis. There are all numerous types of PLC, they have respective advantages and disadvantages, and can meet the needs of the user, but in shape, form, function, programming, they are not identical. This paper mainly introduces Mitsubishi PLC, Siemens PLC and OMRON PLC, simultaneously researches their respective communication characteristics and method of fault diagnosis, provide users choosing PLC a theoretical reference basis.

Dataflow Computing and its Impact on Automation Applications

Developing efficient, scalable and reconfigurable supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems presents a unique set of challenges inherent in the development of distributed computer architectures, algorithms, protocols and procedures for large-scale networked industrial automation applications. A research project on dataflow automation system architecture is presented exploring the research and engineering issues related to the development of computer architecture for the next generation distributed supervision and control systems that exploits and leverages dataflow computation model. Major focus of research is on new object-attribute architecture of dataflow computing environment which is particularly suitable for the design and implementation of reconfigurable scalable heterogeneous distributed applications in industrial automation area. The state-of- the-art in the application of the dataflow model of computation is accompanied with description of software tools developed for programming, simulation, debugging and test of automation applications that follow the object-attribute dataflow model.

PLC-Based Integrated Voltage Regulator Thermostat Power Source

The PLC-based integrated voltage regulator thermostat power source is constituted by the voltage regulator, the controller and the electric heater. It can achieve a moderate control of the electric heater, protect the power grid and load from disturbed and reduce the volatility of the test chamber studio. The system has simple power regulation line, stable performance, high reliability, and can be widely applied in the area of industrial automation and control.

Fault Detection and Isolation in Industrial Systems Based on Spectral Analysis Diagnosis

The diagnoses in industrial systems represent an important economic objective in process industrial automation area. To guarantee the safety and the continuity in production exploitation and to record the useful events with the feedback experience for the curative maintenance. We propose in this work to examine and illustrate the application ability of the spectral analysis approach, in the area of fault detection and isolation industrial systems. In this work, we use a combined analysis diagram of time-frequency, in order to make this approach exploitable in the proposed supervision strategy with decision making module. The obtained results, show clearly how to guarantee a reliable and sure exploitation in industrial system, thus allowing better performances at the time of its exploitation on the supervision strategy.

Semantic technologies: latest advances in agent-based manufacturing control systems

The manuscript reports on the latest advancements in the field of multi-agent based industrial control systems. It is declared that this area is becoming strongly influenced by the recent massive proliferation of semantic technologies in various fields of software engineering. The application of ontologies for expressing semantics of data does not restrict any longer exclusively on semantic web or semantic web services. Ontologies are being applied for advanced handling, exchanging and reasoning about knowledge in the area of industrial automation, especially in the case of production systems based on multi-agent technology. The paper provides a comprehensive survey of the application of ontologies in agent-based control systems and discusses the common characteristics of such integration. The generic ontology designed for discrete manufacturing, which covers ordering, production planning and material handling aspects is presented. In addition, the framework for integration of this ontology in distributed, agent-based control solutions is given. A proof-of-concept demonstrating the advantages and drawbacks of such integration in a real manufacturing scenario is provided.

Growing Our Workforce Through Business and Education

In 2004, Central Community College established the Mechatronics Education Center, a regional center of excellence, to help Nebraska address the shortage of skilled technicians in the area of industrial automation. The main components include an AAS degree program in Mechatronics/Industrial Technology, short-term technical training, and educator professional development and outreach.

A distributed reconfigurable architecture for fault-tolerant systems

The authors present an architecture and associated software framework that together attempt to provide a foundation for the design of fault-tolerant systems for monitoring and control. The framework attempts to minimise the increased cost of redundancy by adopting the idea of dynamic reconfiguration. The authors discuss the basic principles involved and present the details of application to a simplified fly-by-wire (teleoperator) system. The motivation underlying the development of the approach and the opportunities afforded by such systems in the general area of industrial automation are also briefly discussed.

The Exhilarating Journey from Industrial Electronics to Industrial Informatics

F WE HAD a look at the industrial developments that took place in the 20th century, the first half could be said to be hardware dominated in the sense that the improvements in productivity and product quality were mostly due to improvements in “the hardware.” The operational speed and the accuracy of the industrial machinery steadily increased, mostly due to the improvements in the precision of the mechanical parts. Along the same lines, the early second half could be said to be software dominated. It was the software used in microprocessor based control systems that enabled a production line to operate faster and more accurately. Even the improvements in industrial machinery (the hardware) were due to the possibilities offered by Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing. The era of industrial electronics got started around this period, industrial automation in the form of mechanical controls and switches, slowly giving way to electronic controls and signal processing. The last few decades of the century, on the other hand, are characterized by the fusion of different technologies, the first example of which may be (going back almost to the start of the century) electromechanics, then optoelectronics, then mechatronics, then telematics, then bioinformatics, and so on. As a result of this, the boundaries between industrial sectors and academic disciplines have eroded very rapidly. In the new millenium, it is very difficult to put clear boundaries between industrial sectors, between products and services, between producers and users, between IT, communications, media, consumer electronics and even between IT and non-IT industries. Multi-agent technology for robust control of shipboard chilled water system

This paper reports preliminary results of an ongoing research project that demonstrates distributed architecture based on agents applied in the area of industrial automation. This architecture has been built to achieve the goals of improved survivability and readiness of US Navy shipboard systems. We show benefits of multiagent systems in the area where flexibility, survivability, and scalability are required. We present the architecture of multi-agent system, internal structure of agent, planning technique based on plan templates, fault-tolerant structure of middle-agents, and development environment for agents.

An overview of standards development for robots and robotic systems

This paper is a summary of the standards development work which has been completed, is in process, or is under consideration in the area of robot and robotic systems standards including general areas such as environment, general requirements, data communications, general electrical and control requirements, control/machine interface, and safety. The intent of this paper is to show the interrelationship of various standards groups and organizations who are doing or considering doing work in this field and how the various standards projects or published standards are interrelated. Both national and international work is addressed. The paper also provides information on how the work in robots standards fits with other work being done in the area of industrial automation.
