A Review on Mathematical Methods to Approximate µ-Values

In this article, we review a number of iterative and analytical techniques to approximate structured singular values or µ-values which is a straightforward generalization of singular values for square and rectangular matrices. The µ-value is a well-known tool which acts as a strong link between numerical linear algebra and control theory. The computation of structured singular value provides a platform to study and discuss stability, performance, and robustness of the system. Furthermore, we review some very important literature that discusses the applications of structured singular values in different areas of engineering.

Implementation of sustainability and circular economy aiming for performance in the context of Industry 4.0 projects

This research aims to provide an up-to-date overview of the scientific knowledge produced through publications that associate sustainability, the circular economy, and performance in the context of Industry 4.0 projects. For this purpose, a systematic and bibliometric review was conducted using articles published in the Scopus database from 2013 to 2024. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were defined, resulting in 61 selected articles. The results show that studies focus on the areas of environmental science, business, management, accounting, and engineering. Additionally, they indicate that research on these topics has grown exponentially in recent years, evolving and deepening significantly during this period. This study directly contributes to researchers seeking references, concepts, gaps, and trends in research on these topics, as well as to managers interested in implementing sustainability and the circular economy, ensuring or even enhancing the performance of their companies through disruptive projects that utilize Industry 4.0 technologies.

Company-university intersections through service-learning (SL): a systematic review

The most relevant intersections in society include the relationship between universities and companies for a projection toward the sustainable employability of future graduates. Among the possible intersections, Service-learning (SL) is an educational proposition that may help university students to develop their personal skills, offering them opportunities to learn and practice civic commitment, improving their sense of social and citizen responsibility, and combining academic and community-service learning in a constructed programme where participants train by working on real needs of the environment to optimize and transform the latter. The development of SL programmes in university departments related to technical areas is posing a challenge to faculty members and students, thus it is important to explore this lack of programmes. The main aim of the present study was to identify SL projects and their topics through a systematic review, following the guidelines of the «Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses» (PRISMA) declaration in the knowledge areas of Architecture, Computer Science, Environmental Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Computer Languages and Systems, from the year 2008 to the year 2023. This review includes 128 articles, which were analyzed with ATLAS. Ti 22. The categorical system employed in this work emerged from the topics of the programmes identified in the selected articles, which were verified by experts in the mentioned fields of knowledge. The agreed categories were: accessibility, learning, social groups, courses, devices, infrastructure, games, environment, landscaping, heritage, software and web. The most relevant conclusions highlight that most of the articles refer to theoretical aspects of SL, showing a lack of data on the practical development of SL programmes and their impact on employability. The largest number of SL programmes are developed in the areas of Architecture, Computer Science and Software Engineering. Regarding the topics that are addressed in research, most of the articles refer to social groups, software, learning and accessibility.

Harnessing quantum power: Revolutionizing materials design through advanced quantum computation

AbstractThe design of advanced materials for applications in areas of photovoltaics, energy storage, and structural engineering has made significant strides. However, the rapid proliferation of candidate materials—characterized by structural complexity that complicates the relationships between features—presents substantial challenges in manufacturing, fabrication, and characterization. This review introduces a comprehensive methodology for materials design using cutting‐edge quantum computing, with a particular focus on quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) and quantum machine learning (QML). We introduce the loop framework for QUBO‐empowered materials design, including constructing high‐quality datasets that capture critical material properties, employing tailored computational methods for precise material modeling, developing advanced figures of merit to evaluate performance metrics, and utilizing quantum optimization algorithms to discover optimal materials. In addition, we delve into the core principles of QML and illustrate its transformative potential in accelerating material discovery through a range of quantum simulations and innovative adaptations. The review also highlights advanced active learning strategies that integrate quantum artificial intelligence, offering a more efficient pathway to explore the vast, complex material design space. Finally, we discuss the key challenges and future opportunities for QML in material design, emphasizing their potential to revolutionize the field and facilitate groundbreaking innovations.

Integration of User Experience and Agile Software Development: A Systematic Literature Review

New methods and best practices are being used to enhance the software lifecycle because of the recent expansion of the software industry. Agile development approaches have also been widely used, and they have positively affected people's lives and the operations of enterprises. Although agility makes working with developers easier, it does not offer enough chances to collaborate with users. In early Agile formulations, User Experience (UX) was not recognized as a distinct part of software development. The tricky part is figuring out where to integrate them and how to merge them so that the two parts interact. Combining user experience with Agile approaches is the subject of this research's proposed systematic literature review (SLR). This research found ten relevant studies highlighting the growing interest and research in merging these two critical areas of software engineering. In conclusion, this research found some papers or studies integrating user experience into Agile methodologies. Many techniques are used, and all studies have different approaches to integrate them.

Review on Hydrogel Based Systems and their use in Drug Delivery for Wound Healing & Wound Management

Abstract: The largest organ of the human body, the skin, shields the body from the outside environment. Despite having a great capacity for regeneration, major skin abnormalities cannot heal on their own and must be covered with artificial skin. In recent years, significant advancements have been achieved in the area of skin tissue engineering to create novel skin replacements. Because of their porous as well as moisturized polymeric structural composition, hydrogels are one of the choices with the greatest ability to imitate the natural skin microenvironment. Naturally derived polymers, synthesized polymers, polymerizable synthetic monomolecules, as well as mixtures of natural and synthesized polymers, can all be used to create hydrogels. They can be used to assist in the regeneration as well as repair of the wounded dermis, epidermis or else both by dressing various wounds permanently or temporarily. Hydrogels possess distinct properties like lightweight, stretchable, biocompatible, and biodegradable; they have the potential to be incorporated as flexible solutions for the care of chronic wounds. Additionally, these characteristics make hydrogels appropriate for use in the pharmaceutical and medical industries. Physical, chemical, and hybrid bonding are all involved in the creation of hydrogels. Several processes, including solution casting, solution mixing, bulk crosslinking polymerization, the free radical mechanism, radiation therapy, and the development of interpenetrating networks, are used to create the bonding. This review primarily focuses on the type of wounds with phases in wound healing and the many kinds of hydrogels based on cross-linking, ionic charge, physical properties, source etc., and it also describes potential fabrication techniques for hydrogel design in biomedical applications, drug delivery as well as wound management hydrogel systems. Hydrogel-based systems for wound recovery and management are described, as well as current research & future prospective of hydrogel-based drug delivery systems in wound healing for topical applications.

FROM ACADEMIA TO INDUSTRY: A JOURNEY OF INNOVATION IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING - INTERVIEW WITH PROFESSOR FERNANDO LUIZ PELLEGRINI PESSOA

Objectives: To explore Professor Pellegrini's experiences in various areas of chemical engineering, including teaching methods, research in supercritical extraction, biodiesel production, and process intensification. Methods: Semi-structured interview addressing topics such as academic and industrial career, teaching methods, ongoing research, and future perspectives for the chemical industry. Results: Professor Pellegrini highlighted the importance of practical application of theoretical knowledge, the development of the Water Source Diagram method, advances in supercritical extraction and biodiesel production, and the need for process intensification in the industry. Discussion: The interview revealed the importance of integration between academia and industry, the need for teaching methods that facilitate learning, and the challenges in implementing sustainable and efficient technologies in the chemical industry. Conclusion: Professor Pellegrini emphasizes the importance of process intensification and sustainability in the evolution of the chemical industry. High-filler content electrospun fibers from biodegradable polymers and hydroxyapatite: Toward improved scaffolds for tissue engineering.

One of the key challenges in tissue engineering area is the creation of biocompatible scaffolds that support cell growth and mimic the structural and mechanical properties of native tissues. Among various materials used for scaffold fabrication, composite materials based on biodegradable polymers reinforced with bioactive inorganic fillers have attracted significant attention due to their properties. One of the important problems with the preparation of composite electrospun fibers is the low filler content in the fiber. This study aims to select the best composition for electrospun polymer fibers in terms of potential application in tissue engineering. The effect of the viscosity of polymer solution/dispersion and filler content on the structure and properties of the fibers was determined. Morphology and filler content were compared. Series of electrospun composite fibers were fabricated from poly(ĺ-caprolactone) (PCL), poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and hydroxyapatite (HAP), containing from 10 wt% to 40 wt% HAP. The properties of the resulting composites were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and viscosimetry measurements. The addition of HAP to the polymer solution caused a significant increase in viscosity, but the results showed that it is possible to obtain composite electrospun fibers even with 40 wt% filler content. Scanning electron microscopy analysis shows randomly oriented electrospun fibers with an average diameter in the range of 3.8-8.5 ěm for solution and dispersion with high viscosity (1,210-2,000 mPa·s) and significantly larger diameters (approx. 12 ěm) for the PCL solution (326 mPa·s). It is possible to transform the composite dispersion from biopolymers and HAP into nonwoven fabrics at up to 40 wt% filler content. Due to their unique properties, such materials are promising for application in tissue engineering.

Safety Dynamic Monitoring and Rapid Warning Methods for Mechanical Shaft

In the context of urban space constraints, subway and underground projects have become crucial strategies to alleviate urban congestion and enhance residents’ quality of life. However, pit engineering, a frequent accident area in geotechnical engineering, urgently requires innovative safety monitoring technologies. Traditional monitoring methods face challenges such as high labor costs, lengthy monitoring cycles, high-risk working environments, and over-reliance on human judgment. To address these issues, this paper introduces an innovative monitoring system integrating Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensing technology based on a subway pit project in Guangzhou. This system not only achieves fully automated data acquisition but also includes an intelligent monitoring cloud platform, providing unprecedented automated and intelligent monitoring solutions for support structures and the surrounding environment during mechanical shaft construction. The key findings of this paper include the following: (1) The breakthrough application of distributed optical fiber monitoring technology, including successfully deploying this advanced technology in complex pit engineering environments, enabling the precise and continuous monitoring of support structures and surrounding changes, and demonstrating its high effectiveness and intelligence in practical engineering. (2) The innovative design of an intelligent safety monitoring system. By integrating sensors and wireless communication technology, an efficient data networking architecture is constructed, supporting remote configuration and flexible adjustment of monitoring equipment, significantly enhancing data collection‘s real-time performance and continuity while greatly reducing safety risks for field staff, achieving an intelligent upgrade of monitoring work. (3) Comprehensive and accurate empirical analysis. During shaft excavation, the monitoring data collected by the system were stable and reliable, with all indicators maintained within reasonable ranges and closely matching expected changes caused by construction activities, validating the system’s practical application effectiveness in complex construction environments and providing a scientific basis for pit engineering safety management.

Recovery of keratin from feather meal: a new route to valorize an agro-industrial co-product

ABSTRACT The valorization of agro-industrial by-products/co-products represents a sustainable pathway to produce high-value biomaterials. Feather meal is an agro-industrial co-product derived from clean and undecomposed poultry feathers processed under high heat and pressure that offers an economically viable and scalable alternative for keratin extraction compared to native feathers. This study explores the recovery of keratin from feather meal through an optimized alkaline hydrolysis process, achieving a yield of 20 wt.% at 15°C and 90 min of extraction by using 2 mol L−1 sodium hydroxide solution. A negative temperature dependence was observed in keratin extraction yield, suggesting the occurrence of thermal degradation at elevated temperatures. Protein analyses by different techniques confirmed the characteristic diffraction peaks, functional groups, and elemental composition (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulphur) of feather keratin. The extracted keratin presented a low molar mass of 9 kg mol−1. Considering the circular economy principles, this work proposes a novel valorization route for feather meal and highlights its potential in creating value-added materials for several applications in medicine, pharmaceuticals, and engineering areas.

A review on the mucus dynamics in the human respiratory airway.

Research interest in the dynamics of respiratory flow and mucus has significantly increased in recent years with important contributions from various disciplines such as pulmonary and critical care medicine, surgery, physiology, environmental health sciences, biophysics, and engineering. Different areas of engineering, including mechanical, chemical, civil/environmental, aerospace, and biomedical engineering, have longstanding connections with respiratory research. This review draws on a wide range of scientific literature that reflects the diverse audience and interests in respiratory science. Its focus is on mucus dynamics in the respiratory airways, covering aspects such as mucins in fluidity and network formation, mucus production and function, response to external conditions, clearance methods, relationship with age, rheological properties, mucus surfactant, and mucoviscidosis. Each of these areas contains multiple subtopics that offer extensive depth and breadth for readers. We underscore the crucial importance of regulating and treating mucus for maintaining the health and functionality of the respiratory system, highlighting the ongoing need for further research to address respiratory disorders associated with mucus dynamics.

The Contact Pressure Analysis of Different Load and Diameter Ratio on Hemispherical Contact: Biomechanical Perspectives

Contact mechanics is pivotal in understanding interactions between surfaces, particularly in biological contexts and the human body. When surfaces come into contact, the roughness represented by microscopic peaks called asperities becomes crucial. In this study, spherical contact modeling is explored, which is an extensively researched area in both engineering and biomechanics. By examining hemispherical contact systems, valuable insights into their biomechanical response are gained. Specifically, the investigation focuses on how geometric variations and applied loads impact contact pressure using finite element analysis. The model comprises two hemispheres with varying diameter ratios. The results show higher diameter ratios increase maximum contact pressure and expand the pressure contour distribution. While M1 shows similar pressure distribution in both hemispheres under additional load, M2 and M3 exhibit a broader distribution in the bottom hemisphere compared to the upper. Consequently, lower diameter ratios emerge as safer design choices, whereas higher ratios require careful load management to prevent failure.

3D PRINTING OF THIN-WALLED MODELS - STATE-OF-ART

The paper presents an analysis of the state of the art regarding the production of thin-walled models using 3D printing technology. Data based on the Web of Science database was presented in quantitative terms and divided into individual areas of science. 189 publications were found in the years from 2013 to 2024, of which the most, i.e. 82 in the area of Mechanical Engineering. It was observed that some of the publications are grouped around issues related to the study of mainly mechanical properties of both samples and thin-walled cellular structures. Another group of works concerns methods of obtaining thin-walled models using 3D printing technologies. The article characterizes selected exemplary works representing individual areas of science. The need to perform tests of the mechanical properties of thin-walled elements, especially those with a thickness of less than 2 mm, was indicated. Appropriate examples were provided to demonstrate the lower mechanical properties of thin-walled elements compared to solid-type parts manufactured by 3D printing.

A Case Study: An Android Security

Software security has made great progress; code analysis tools perform extensive checks for code defects, it is useful to have a basic understanding of the different warnings and emphasize the bug. However, this is beyond the state of the art for many types of application security flaws. Thus, such tools frequently serve for an analyst to help them zero in on security relevant portions of code so they can find flaws more efficiently, rather than a tool that simply finds flaws automatically. In cooperation with a security expert, we carried out a case study with the mobile phone platform Android, and employed the reverse engineering tool-suite Bauhaus for this security assessment. During the investigation we found some inconsistencies in the implementation of the Android security concepts. Based on the lessons learned from the case study, we propose several research topics in the area of reverse engineering that would support a security analyst during security assessments.

Analysis of order-of-addition experiments

The order-of-addition (OofA) experiment involves arranging components in a specific order to optimize a certain objective, which is attracting a great deal of attention in many disciplines, especially in the areas of biochemistry, scheduling, and engineering. Recent studies have highlighted its significance, and notable works have aimed to address NP-hard OofA problems from a statistical perspective. However, solving OofA problems presents challenges due to their complex nature and the presence of uncertainty, such as scheduling problems with uncertain processing times. These uncertainties affect processing times, which are not known with certainty in advance. They introduce heteroscedasticity into OofA experiments, where different orders result in varying dispersions. To address these challenges, a unified framework is proposed to analyze scheduling problems without making specific assumptions about the distribution of these certainties. It encompasses model development and optimization, encapsulating existing homoscedastic studies (where different orders produce the same dispersion value) as a specific instance. For heteroscedastic cases, a dual response optimization within an uncertainty set is proposed, aiming to minimize the dispersion of response while keeping the location of response with a predefined target value. However, solving the proposed non-linear minimax optimization is rather challenging. An equivalent optimization formulation with low computational cost is proposed for solving such a challenging problem. Theoretical supports are established to ensure the tractability of the proposed method. Simulation studies are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. With its solid theoretical support, ease of implementation, and ability to find an optimal order, the proposed approach offers a practical and competitive solution to solving general order-of-addition problems.

INOVAÇÕES NA CORREÇÃO DE MANIFESTAÇÕES PATOLÓGICAS EM EDIFÍCIOS: REVISÃO DE LITERATURA.

Buildings must provide the user with physical and visual comfort, in addition to structural safety. However, it is common for pathological manifestations to appear at any stage of construction or use of the building. In order to indicate appropriate therapy, it is necessary to know the origin of the problem whose study procedures are part of the branch of Building Pathology. The main instructional methods that professionals involved in the area validate are specified in the IBAPE National Building Inspection Standard, which establishes criteria and procedures related to building inspection. In the search to solve such problems, innovative measures found in Brazil. In this sense, this study aimed to present innovative measures aimed at correcting pathological manifestations in buildings. In the methodology used, it is an integrative review of the literature, based on scientific articles, periodicals and current legislation on the respective topic. Data collection was carried out through databases such as Scielo, Google Scholar, among others, from 2019 to 2023. In the results, it was evident that the correction of pathological manifestations in buildings is a vital area in civil engineering and in construction, focusing on the identification, analysis and resolution of structural and functional problems that arise over time. Assessment of Multigrid Schemes with Fixed Patterns for a Two-Dimensional Heat Transfer Problem

Heat transfer problems and their solutions are of critical importance in almost all areas of engineering and technology, while many real-world problems are inherently three-dimensional. Simplifying them to 2D models offers practical advantages with reasonable models. With being the fundamental class of problem of heat transfer, the 2D thermal diffusion problem was selected for the study. Multigrid methods were referred to as standing out in terms of cost reduction while keeping solution accuracy. The effectiveness of multigrid methods employing fixed pattern schemes was subject to investigation. To set up numerical experimentation, an authentic code generation effort was given that implements a basic finite volume method, intergrid operations and iterative solvers. A reference case with an analytical Laplace solution was selected and properly validated by the results. A variety of multigrid schemes with fixed patterns were explored around parameters, iterations per sweep and maximum coarsening level. Results were compiled on the focal points of cost and performance. A comparison of the direct iterative methods with multigrid schemes proved the effectiveness of multigrid schemes. With the assessment of the cost and performance outcomes, it is concluded that any multigrid scheme should visit the maximum coarsest level possible while keeping a minimum number of iterations on each grid resolution.

Комплексные научно-справочные атласы как информационные источники изучения природопользования на национальном и региональном уровнях

Rational environmental management is one of the priority areas of development science, technology and engineering of the Russian Federation. An important place in its promotion is given to information support. It is most adequately presented in scientific reference complex atlases. The purpose of this study is to analyze and evaluate complex scientific reference atlases as information sources for studying environmental management at the national and regional levels. The use of natural resources is considered as an object and subject of mapping, its emergence and evolution as the spheres of practical activity of society deepen and expand, and its display in atlases. The object for analysis and evaluation was the fundamental complex scientific reference atlases of Russia and its regions—general and sectoral, created over the half-century history of the development of thematic mapping from the second half of the 20th century to the present. Particular attention is paid to two modern atlases of the most important regions of Russia, embodying the latest achievements of comprehensive mapping: the National Atlas of the Arctic (2017) and the Atlas of the Baikal Region (2021). At the federal level, the National Atlas of Russia, (2004–2008) has been examined in detail. An assessment of complex scientific reference atlases as sources of systematic study of environmental management is given, and their advantages and disadvantages are noted. The main disadvantage of atlases is the lack of a complete, holistic display of environmental management, concentrated on the study and identification of its problems. Based on the analysis, generalizations were made that correspond to the purpose of the article, and an attempt was made to outline priority tasks in promoting environmental management mapping. The prospects for atlas scientific reference mapping are noted, taking into account modern information and technological achievements.

Recent Advances of Organic Cocrystals in Emerging Cutting-Edge Properties and Applications.

Organic cocrystals, representing one type of new functional materials, have gathered significant interest in various engineering areas. Owing to their diverse stacking modes, rich intermolecular interactions and abundant functional components, the physicochemical properties of organic cocrystals can be tailored to meet different requirements and exhibit novel characteristics. The past few years have witnessed the rapid development of organic cocrystals in both fundamental characteristics and various applications. Beyond the typical properties like ambipolarity, emission tuning ability, ferroelectricity, etc. that are previously well demonstrated, many novel, impressive and cutting-edge properties and applications of cocrystals are also emerged and advanced recently. Especially during the nearest five years, photothermal conversion, room-temperature phosphorescence, thermally activated delay fluorescence, circularly polarized luminescence, organic solid-state lasers, near-infrared sensing, photocatalysis, batteries, and stimuli responses have been reported. In this review, these new properties are carefully summarized. Besides, some neoteric architecture and methodologies, such as host-guest structures and machine learning-based screening, are introduced. Finally, the potential future developments and expectations for organic cocrystals are discussed for further investigations on multiple functions and applications.
