Suitability and Carrying Capacity of Aquatic Environment for Shrimp Culture in Sarjo District, Pasangkayu Regency West Sulawesi

The potential of coastal and marine resources in Indonesia is so diverse both in terms of quantity and quality, should be able to contribute greatly to the economic growth of the State of Indonesia. The purpose of this stydy is to assess the level of land suitability and carrying capacity of the pond environment for shrimp culture in Sarjo District Pasangkayu Regency. The research was conducted using survey method, measuring biological, physical and chemical parameters. The observed data consisted of temperature, turbidity, TSS, current direction and speed, tides, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, BOD, COD, BOT, and plankton. Based on biological, physical and chemical data, an analysis of the suitability of the pond area was carried out using the geographic information system (GIS) Arc View GIS Application Version 3.3. The results of the level of suitability of land for shrimp culture in Sarjo District was very suitable 154.88 hectare; 2) Suitable 77.16 hectare and quite suitable 27.26 hectare. Overall land for aquaculture in each area is traditional 732.95 hectare, semi-intensive 1,589.12 hectare and intensive 247.83 hectare. The environmental carrying capacity of intensive shrimp cultivation ponds with an estimated maximum production of 42.63 tons ha-1, with a permitted pond area that does not exceed the environmental carrying capacity is 166.07 ha; semi-intensive cultivation with a maximum production of 153.49 tons ha-1 MT-1, the permitted pond area so as not to exceed the environmental carrying capacity is 597.85 hectare, traditional cultivation with a maximum production of 3.4 tons MT-1 with a supported pond area of 2,569 ha in Sarjo District, Pasangkayu Regency.

Challenges Associated with the Management of Post-Consumer Polyethylene Terephthalate Packaging Bottle Waste in Harare Urban, Zimbabwe

This study analyses challenges associated with management of PET beverages bottle waste in Harare Urban, Zimbabwe. Quantitative data collection instruments used included structured questionnaires and geo-spatial data collection. Qualitative data instruments used included direct observations, open-ended questions, structured interviews (audio and videos) as well as field notes. Fundamental to the quantitative data collection process was the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Earth Observation Tools. Near-real time geo-spatial data was collected using Mobile Data Collector (Open Data Kit-ODK), was analysed (using ArcView GIS, QGIS, SPSS and MS Excel) and then presented for all the attributes associated with this particular research study. Geo-referenced data was collected from a total of 328 outlets and 299 consumers and households. Challenges associated with PET waste management in Harare include inadequate collection infrastructure, consumer behaviour, volatility of oil and PET global markets and the lack of a robust PET waste policy that addresses these challenges. Environmental and health hazards emanating from these challenges included reduced aesthetic value, blockage of drainage systems, toxic gas emissions from PET waste burning, reduced productive land, leaching of hazardous substances, high incidence of malaria and cholera and ingestion by wildlife. In order to address the generation and distribution of PET waste, the primary audiences are manufacturers of beverages packaged in PET Bottle. The manufacturers need to focus on bottle light weighting. This means that less resin are used to manufacture the same bottle and this ultimately reduces the amount of PET waste generated by weight.

Evaluation of Landslide Based Settlement Distribution in Manado City

This research was conducted in Manado with the aim of identifying factors that could potentially cause landslide susceptibility, mapping the distribution of potential landslides, and evaluating the distribution of landslide-based settlements.The materials used in this study are daily rainfall maps, slope maps, geological / rock maps, fault maps, soil solum depth maps, land use maps, infrastructure maps and population density maps on a scale of 1: 75 000. The map used as research material sourced from documentation studies and interpretation of maps of the earth and satellite imagery. Likewise, other data needed to support this research was obtained through documentation studies and field measurements. Each variable is used to determine landslide scaling and weighting vulnerability. The sum of the multiplication scores and weights of each variable is categorized into five classes of landslide susceptibility levels, which are very light, mild, moderate heavy and very heavy. Settlement distribution analysis is carried out by overlapping between landslide maps and settlement maps using geographic information system (GIS) technology with ArcView GIS 3.3 software.The results of the study indicated that there were three factors that triggered landslide susceptibility in Manado that had a significant effect, namely geological / rock constituent factors, fault factors, and depth of soil solum. Other factors both physical and management factors have a weak influence on landslides because they are on slopes <25%. Most (91.57%) of the study area had very low to low landslide susceptibility. Therefore, the distribution of settlements in the study area is generally in areas that are safe from landslides. Only about 46.12 ha or around 1.17% of settlements in Manado are located in high landslide susceptibility areas. Settlements located in areas with high landslide susceptibility are spread across seven sub-districts, which are located in Bunaken, Tuminting, Mapanget, Sinkil, Pal Dua, Wanea and Malalayang Districts.

Flood Plain Modelling of Krishna Lower Basin Using Arcgis, Hec-Georas And Hec-Ras

A flood is an overflow of water that submerges land which is usually dry. Floods can also occur in rivers when the flow rate exceeds the capacity of the river channel, particularly at bends or meanders in the waterway. This results in causing damage to human and property if they are in the natural flood plains of rivers or settled on the banks of rivers. To facilitate the appropriate measures for effective flood mitigation in advance, there is a need to model the flood plain which facilitates to locate the flood plain and its extent for effective flood mitigation measures. By understanding the extent of flooding and floodwater inundation, decision makers are able to make choices about how to best allocate resources to prepare for emergencies and to generally improve the quality of life. This research presents a straightforward approach for processing output of the HEC-RAS hydraulic model, to enable two and three dimensional floodplain mapping and analysis in the ArcView geographic information system. The methodology is applied to a stretch of river Krishna from downstream of Nagarjuna Sagar project to Kummaripalem which is located on upstream of Prakasam Barrage. The flood plain maps are developed for the flows corresponding to 2, 10, 25, 50 and 100 year return periods. The resulting surface model provides a good representation of the general landscape and contains additional detail within the stream channel. Overall, the results of the research indicate that GIS is an effective environment for floodplain mapping and analysis.

The effect of urban planning on urban formations determining bioclimatic comfort area’s effect using satellitia imagines on air quality: a case study of Bursa city

Biocomfort is limit values ​​in which people feel comfortable in environmental conditions such as wind, humidity, temperature, and precipitation. Bioclimatic comfort areas are used in urban planning, rural planning, tourism purposes, urban area’s residential area, and landscape architecture. Bioclimatic comfort maps were made according to PET (Physiological Equivalent Temperature) index from meteorological station; also, data were obtained from satellite images to determine the bioclimatic comfort structure of the urban area in ​​Bursa. For this data, average wind, temperature, and relative humidity values ​​were converted to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) using ArcView GIS ™ 10 software and create thermal perception maps. The study integrates remote sensing (RS) and GIS to analyze land cover and use change in Bursa defining bioclimatic comfort. Utilizing Landsat (7 ETM and 8 OLITIRS) satellite data and Digital Elevation Model (DEM), the change map was analyzed and produced in 2002–2016. The objective was to understand the suitability of Change Vector Analysis (CVA) and elevation parameters in the region. The results indicate the appropriateness of change in vector analysis. With the help of a bioclimatic comfort conditions, map taking into account the temperature, humidity, and rainfall data and bioclimatic comfort zone for the 12-year period perceived for 30 years. The result maps of the study may serve as the basis for sustainable urban planning studies for Bursa.

Land Use/Land Cover Mapping using Geospatial Technology for Environmental Management

The aim of the attempt was to study the Land use/Land cover attributes for environmental management planning for socio economic growth of study area. Evaluation of Land Resources in given study area by Remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies help to generate the spatial information to study the current conditions deliberate to the past conditions data and estimate the future requirements. The IRS-P6 satellite Imagery and Survey of India toposheets data, visual interpretation technique, Arc/Info and Arc View GIS software’s are used to prepare the final Land use/Land cover information. This data is useful for environment and natural resources development management. This type of land information study helps to prepare the Land and water Resources Action plans for conservation of suitable cropping patterns, and improved productivity of the study area and to provide the primary requirements of farmers, to enhance their background conditions and help to develop or enhance decision makers for sustainable development.

Assessment of Community-led Total Sanitation Sustainability in Ejigbo Local Government Area of Osun State, Nigeria

Nigeria is among the nations of the world with the highest number of people practising Open Defecation. This study among others assessed the level of community-led total sanitation (CLTS) in the selected triggered communities and focused on the rationale for the reversion of CLTS programme implemented in some of some rural communities with poor sanitation coverage in Ejigbo Local Government Area of Osun state, Nigeria, with the technical and financial support of donor agencies. The qualitative, semi-structured questionnaires were administered in 296 households in 41 selected communities. Spatial positioning of communities and water points coordinates were collected through the use of a hand-held Global Positioning System- GPS model etrex 10 GARMIN to produce a digital map through the Arc view Geographical Information System software. Two batches of CLTS were conducted in the Local Government Area across 182 communities in 2006 and 2012 with and without subsidy. Communities were triggered and declared open defecation free while some were certified ODF. The majority (75.7%) of the respondents reverted to OD as a result of caved-in of pit latrine due to the use of log of wood, wooden slab as platform over the pit. 5.1% of the respondents improved on CLTS latrine 81.7% of household used the latrine for just two years before defectiveness set in. All respondents agreed to have benefited in the CLTS programme and were willing to return to construct durable latrine provided they get a subsidy or are financially buoyancy. This study revealed that emphasis was on latrine construction while other components of environmental sanitation were not properly addressed as any scalability was near to nothing. Monitoring and follow up was found to be weak among the stakeholders.

IDENTIFIKASI DAN PEMETAAN DAERAH BENCANA RAWAN LONGSOR DI KECAMATAN AMARASI BARAT DENGAN MENGGUNAKAN ARC VIEW GIS

Land degradation in the western Amarasi causes direct and indirect losses to agricultural land and economic activities of the communities. This study objectivesof this study are to identify the causal factors associated with disaster-prone landslides and to map the vulnerability level of landslides in the area. In doing so, we require rapid and accurate identification and mapping of the overall disaster location. The Arc View GIS (Geographic Information System) was used to identify the leading causes of landslides, vulnerable areas classification, map digitalization processes, and carry out overlay. The results show that the physical parameters of the causes of landslide-prone areas in the western Amarasi region are rainfall, soil type, slope, and land use. The level of a medium vulnerable landslide is around 9,095.99 ha (55.76%), and not prone around 7,216.94 ha (44.24%) of the total area in western Amarasi.

The development of road databases and analysis of traffic accident-prone section (blacksite) based on Geographic Information System (GIS)

Historical data on traffic accidents can provide information on blacksite areas. This can aid in the approach for reducing the number of traffic accidents. Therefore, this research aims to develop database of traffic accidents by the implementation of Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS) and its interface uses ArcView GIS. We found that there are 69 roads which are identified as the location of traffic accidents. Of these, there are 15 roads as blacksite. The most vulnerable road is the Timor Raya road which has an accident rate (APW) of 813.2 and a UCL value of 71.55. This database provides comprehensive information on geometric conditions of the road, accident data and blacksite, and also features road photographs and cross-sectional road drawings.

Dynamics of land - use change in urban area in West Jakarta

This aim to research is to know how land use change in West Jakarta period 2000 - 2010. The research method used is descriptive method with a quantitative approach. Data analysis was done by using the result of research instrument to find out the driving of land change and to know the change of was analyzed using GIS (Geographic Information System) in Arc View GIS 3.3 program and Quantitative Analysis Model Location Quotient (LQ) and Shift-Share Analysis (SSA) In this study. The research instrument used in the analysis was observation and documentation. Based on the analysis conducted, the results of research on land use change in West Jakarta in the period of 10 years from 2000 until 2010 is caused by several aspects that are related to each other, namely political, economic, demographic, and cultural aspects. The land use change occurred in the area which decreased by minus 367,79 hectares (2.87%), the open space area decreased by minus 103.36 hectares (0.8%), the built up area increased by 201.13 hectares (1.57%), and the settlement area was 27.14 hectares (0.21%).

The spatial distribution of soil lead pollution in the Middle Mukuvisi Catchment, Harare, Zimbabwe

This research determined the spatial variation in soil lead pollution in the Middle Mukuvisi Catchment in Harare. Lead is one of the commonest urban pollutants and it induces negative effects on biophysical resources and humans. Part of the study area has been target of landfill programmes dating back to the 1950s. It is also subjected to industrial discharges from the Graniteside and Masasa Industrial Areas. The study catchment was stratified into two strata namely: Strata A (8 x 105 m2) and Strata B (10 x 105 m2) upstream and downstream with respect of the centre of the landfilled area respectively. These strata were digitized in Arc View Geographic Information System (GIS). Stratification enabled the testing of differences in soil lead pollution levels in the two study strata. Thirty soil samples were then collected from random points in the study area for laboratory chemical analysis. Fifteen points were randomly selected for each stratum. The results showed that soil lead concentration varies spatially in the study catchment. In comparison the strata upstream has lower average soil lead concentration than strata downstream with respect to the centre of the landfilled area. However, the difference in soil lead concentration between the two strata is not significant (p &gt; 0.05). This can be explained by introduction of lead into the study catchment by other sources of pollution upstream such as Masasa Industrial Area. The other sources of lead into the study strata besides landfill leachate can be leakages from fuel stations and leaded fuel spillages from vehicles. It is anticipated further research in this area will contribute to the sustainable utilization of urban river catchments, especially where they are used for dumping wastes.

Cambios en el uso del suelo en el municipio de Álamos, Sonora - México

En el marco del desarrollo territorial, este trabajo analizó el cambio de uso del suelo y vegetación en el municipio de Álamos, estado de Sonora - México, para el periodo comprendido entre los años 1980 y 2001. El área de estudio caracterizó un rezago productivo, el alto índice de marginación y la sobreexplotación de los recursos naturales principalmente a causa de las actividades agropecuarias.El objetivo fue identificar la magnitud y distribución espacial del cambio de uso del suelo. Para la obtención del mapa de cambio de uso del suelo se utilizó la cartografía existente elaborada en distintas fechas y por diferentes autores, y se realizó una sobreposición mediante el empleo de un sistema de información geográfico (SIG), utilizando el programa ArcView GIS versión 3.2. En el periodo de estudio, los resultados muestran que la agricultura de temporal disminuyó de 73 688 a 57 588 hectáreas; los pastizales cultivados aumentaron en un 1.050%. En el caso de los matorrales, prácticamente todos perdieron superficie y en algunos casos desaparecieron.En cuanto a los bosques, el de pino–encino fue el único que perdió superficie (56%) al cambiar de 47 019 a 20 656 hectáreas. La selva baja caducifolia y subcaducifolia tuvieron una pérdida de 23% de su superficie. La superficie ocupada por los cuerpos de agua disminuyó en aproximadamente 40%, al reducir su superficie de 7963 a 4747 hectáreas. Estimation Curve Numbers using GIS and Hec-GeoHMS Model

Recently, the development and application of the hydrological models based on Geographical Information System (GIS) has increased around the world. One of the most important applications of GIS is mapping the Curve Number (CN) of a catchment. In this research, three softwares, such as an ArcView GIS 9.3 with ArcInfo, Arc Hydro Tool and Geospatial Hydrologic Modeling Extension (Hec-GeoHMS) model for ArcView GIS 9.3, were used to calculate CN of (19210 ha) Salt Creek watershed (SC) which is located in Osage County, Oklahoma, USA. Multi layers were combined and examined using the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) ArcMap 2009. These layers are soil layer (Soil Survey Geographic SSURGO), 30 m x 30 m resolution of Digital Elevation Model (DEM), land use layer (LU), “Look–Up tables” and other layers resulted from running the software. Curve Number which expresses a catchment’s response to a storm event has been estimated in this study to each land parcel based on LU layer and soil layer within each parcel. The results showed that a CN of 100 (dark Blue) means surface water. The high curve numbers (100 -81) (Blue and light Blue) corresponding to urbanized areas means high runoff and low infiltration; whereas low curve numbers (77- 58) (Brown and light Brown) corresponding to the forested area means low runoff and high infiltration. Four classes of land cover have been identified; these are surface water, medium residential, forest and agriculture.

Application of SWAT model for predicting soil erosion and sediment yield

Hirakud, the longest earthen dam in Asia on the river Mahanadi, has been affected by sedimentation problems which affect reservoir storage capacities and different reservoir operations. This article presents the hydrological modeling of the Mahanadi catchment up to Hirakud, located in the states of Chhattisgarh and Odisha in India, using the modified version of Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) with an interface of ArcView Geographic Information System software to predict soil erosion and sediment transport to the reservoir for improving its useful life. The data sources used in the study were: terrain data 90 m resolution of Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, Land Use and Land Cover derived from Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus, soil map published by National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning, India and meteorological data collected from India Meteorological Department, India. The study involves the analysis of sensitive parameters of the simulated data (discharge 15, sediment load 6); 5-year calibration and 3-year validation on daily basis to predict the discharge and sediment load. The sensitivity analysis was carried out using the Latin Hypercube and One-factor-At-a-Time. The results also show that the prediction of sediment yield is highly sensitive to the sizes of different sub-basins due to the sensitivity of topographic factors used in the Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation. The graphical as well as statistical results achieved in this study indicate that the model is capable to identify critical erosion-prone areas within the watershed on the scale of sub-watershed which helps the hydrologists to introduce effective management practices at the lowest cost. The study shows that about 34% area of total catchment falls under high or above soil erosion zones with combination of coarse loamy type of soil and agricultural type of land use and land cover condition. The results of this study also identify regions of high sediment yield and sediment delivery ratio. To enhance the SWAT model performance, it is recommended to use sub-daily data and to prioritize soil erosion at the Hydrological Response Units level for improvement of watershed management.

Characteristics of Inpatient Hypertension Cases and Factors Associated with Admission Outcomes in Ashanti Region, Ghana: An Analytic Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Hypertension remains a cause of morbidity and mortality in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. It has been featured in the top ten causes of OPD attendance, admissions, and deaths since 2012. We investigated the sociodemographic characteristics and spatial distribution of inpatient hypertensives and factors associated with their admission outcomes. Methods A 2014 line list of 1715 inpatient HPT cases aged ≥25 years was used for the cross-sectional analytic study. Accounting for clustering, all analyses were performed using the “svy” command in Stata. Frequencies, Chi-square test, and logistic regression analysis were used in the analysis. Arc view Geographic Information System (ArcGIS) was used to map the density of cases by place of residence and reporting hospital. Results Mean age of cases was 58 (S.D 0.0068). Females constituted 67.6% of the cases. Age, gender, and NHIS status were significantly associated with admission outcomes. Cases were clustered in the regional capital and bordering districts. However, low case densities were recorded in the latter. Conclusion Increasing NHIS access can potentially impact positively on hypertension admission outcomes. Health educational campaigns targeting men are recommended to address hypertension-related issues.

Application of geographic information system (GIS) for site specific management of paddy production systems - a case study in Kamburupitiya divisional secretariat (DS), Sri Lanka

Geographic Information System (GIS) has been known as a powerful tool to analyze spatial data and this technol-ogy is recently applied to agricultural sector in Sri Lanka. This study aimed to apply the GIS technology to man-age information in efficient way to develop the paddy sector under Kamburupitiya Divisional Secretariat (DS), Sri Lanka. An extensive field survey was conducted to collect 77 soil samples at a depth of 5-20 cm and GPS locations were recorded for each sample. The information related to Machineries used in Paddy production was collected by a survey using a questionnaire. Yield data were collected from Agrarian Services Centers. The pH meter, Walkley & Black rapid titration method and Kjeldhal method were used to determine soil pH, organic carbon and soil nitrogen content respectively. ArcView GIS 3.3 software was used for the spatial analysis and mapping. Results of the study revealed that land areas with suitable pH and soil organic carbon are 3936.96ha and 791.99ha respectively. Soil Nitrogen content was very low. The yield per unit area vary from 1,111.3 to 4,769kg/ha/year. There are considerable usages of machineries for rice cultivation including two wheel tractors, four wheel trac-tors, threshers, harvesters and sprayers.

Integration of Remote Sensing Data and GIS Tools for Accurate Mapping of Flooded Area of Kurigram, Bangladesh

Flood is the most devastating disaster in the present world which causes damage to environmental, social, economical and human lives at about 43% of all natural disasters. There are many flood hazard occurs in Bangladesh during the 19th century and 20th century in the different regions. These flood hazards have more catastrophic damages of huge area within human lives and other necessary properties of Bangladesh. The first step of flood management is to evaluate the area which is under threat of flood disaster. In this study here showed the importance of Remote Sensing (RS) data and Geographic Information System (GIS) tools to manage the flood related problems. Remote Sensing (RS) data and Geographic Information System (GIS) provide a lot of information to flood disaster management. ArcView GIS software tools are used for digitizing the base map and to create a flood risk zone of Kurigram, Bangladesh where images of remote sensing can be helped to determine the flood inundation areas. The integrated application of RS and GIS techniques for monitoring and flood mapping provides information for the decision makers. The study also grows attentions the need of cost-efficient methodology by creating a flood vulnerable map of Bangladesh.

From the calculation results showed that the Elementary Schools and Islamic Elementary Schools is located in the southern Malang has a degree of severe damage to the value of PGA 228878- 234987 gal. Simulation of Runoff and Sediment Yield for a Kaneri Watershed Using SWAT Model

Watershed as an entry point acts as a beginning to address the issues of sustainable rainwater management for improving livelihoods. Extraction of watershed parameters using Geographical Information System (GIS) and use of simulation models is the current trend for hydrologic evaluation of watersheds. In the present study, the open Source Tool Quantum GIS 2.2.0 was used for preparation of maps to verify the spatial extent of the area. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) having an interface with Arc-View GIS software (ArcGIS 10.1 with Arc SWAT 2012 extension) was selected for the estimation of runoff and sediment yield from Kaneri watershed, located in Western Maharashtra region. The coefficient of determination (R2) for the monthly and yearly runoff was obtained as 0.849 and 0.951 respectively for the calibration period 1979 to 2000 and 0.801 and 0.950 respectively for the validation period 2001-2013. The R2 value in estimating the monthly and yearly sediment yield during calibration period was computed as 0.722 and 0.788 respectively. The R2 for monthly and yearly sediment yield values for validation period was observed to be 0.565 and 0.684 respectively.

The integration of the Geographic Information System (GIS) with groundwater modeling and satellite remote sensing capabilities has provided an efficient way of analyzing and monitoring groundwater behavior and its associated land conditions. A 3-dimensional finite element model (Feflow) has been used for regional groundwater flow modeling of Upper Chaj Doab in Indus Basin, Pakistan. The approach of using GIS techniques that partially fulfill the data requirements and define the parameters of existing hydrologic models was adopted. The numerical groundwater flow model is developed to configure the groundwater equipotential surface, hydraulic head gradient, and estimation of the groundwater budget of the aquifer. GIS is used for spatial database development, integration with a remote sensing, and numerical groundwater flow modeling capabilities. The thematic layers of soils, land use, hydrology, infrastructure, and climate were developed using GIS. The Arcview GIS software is used as additive tool to develop supportive data for numerical groundwater flow modeling and integration and presentation of image processing and modeling results. The groundwater flow model was calibrated to simulate future changes in piezometric heads from the period 2006 to 2020. Different scenarios were developed to study the impact of extreme climatic conditions (drought/flood) and variable groundwater abstraction on the regional groundwater system. The model results indicated a significant response in watertable due to external influential factors. The developed model provides an effective tool for evaluating better management options for monitoring future groundwater development in the study area.
