Dr. Efros' Emendation of Jer. 4. 29

The emendation by Dr. Efros to Jer. 4.29, to read Wl=, 'into ditches', instead of W==, 'into thickets', published in the JOURNAL, p. 75, is uncalled for. There is no difficulty in the text as it stands. His main objection is, that the term W=V is not used elsewhere in the Bible in the sense of 'thickets'. Is this the only word in the Bible that has no companion? Besides, the term W=t as found in the Bible, denotes a well, cistern, or reservoir, where water is kept, and is not a fit place for hiding or protection (see 2 Kings, 3.16; Jer. 14.3.). The word N=V in Syriac, or X8K in Talmudic Aramaic, means a wood, thicket, or forest. Wherever is found in the Bible the word IV', 'a wood', the Peshitto renders N=S, e. g., Ps. 96.12. ISIDOR S.
