Electrode wettability and capacitance of electrical double layer capacitor: a classical density functional theory study

We suggest a coarse-grained water model for use in classical density functional theory (cDFT) to describe aqueous inorganic salt solutions that act as working electrolytes in electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) with electrodes comprising two face-to-face doped carbon monolayers. Focus of the cDFT calculations lies on the influence of solvent electrode wettability (SEW) on capacitance and energy storage behaviors, while also considering its interaction with factors like electrolyte bulk concentration, pore size, electrode voltage, and temperature. New phenomena are disclosed theoretically. Remarkably, this study challenges the traditional notion that energy storage is consistently boosted by enhancing the electrode’s ionophobicity. Contrarily, the SEW effect reduces energy storage below the standard aqueous electrochemical window voltage (around 1.2 V) and only enhances the energy storage as the voltage surpasses a certain threshold up to the optimal window voltage (2 V–2.5 V). Furthermore, a non-monotonic SEW effect on energy storage is demonstrated under appropriate conditions, shedding new light on the complex relationship between ionophobicity and energy storage. Moreover, the present coarse-grained water model enables the prediction of the experimentally observed inverse relationship between temperature and capacitance. In contrast, the widely used electrolyte primitive model predicts the existence of a maximum value. The decisive factor for the impact of SEW on capacitance and energy storage is identified as congestion within the electrode pore, while other factors contribute by affecting this congestion. The present research offers valuable insights, highlighting the significance of SEW in the innovative and strategic design of aqueous inorganic EDLC devices.

Identifying the regularities of n-heptane flame inhibition by inorganic compounds

The task related to using inorganic compounds for extinguishing flames is to enable their inhibitory capacity during operation within wide limits. Therefore, the object of the current research was aqueous solutions of inorganic salts, on which the effectiveness of inhibitory properties during interaction with n-heptane flame was established. It has been proven that increasing the mass flow rate of water by 1.5 mg/s reduces the intensity of OH-radicals radiation from 70 % to 30 % and lowers the flame temperature by 90 °C. However, it was found that when potassium salts are given, the intensity of OH-radicals radiation decreases by more than 6 times, potassium chloride and sulfate reduce the intensity of OH-radicals radiation by more than 2.8 times. Among ammonium salts, salts of dihydrogen phosphate and ammonium hydrogen phosphate reduce the relative intensity of radiation of OH radicals by more than 1.3 times. Sodium salts include nitrates and sodium chloride, which reduce the relative radiation intensity of OH radicals by more than 1.6 times. This is manifested, first of all, in the enrichment of the combustible environment with fuel. When determining the flame temperature of flammable liquids, it was established that n-heptane has the most stable and highest flame temperature, which is 1768 °C. When adding inorganic compounds to the flame of n-heptane, nitrate salt, and potassium chloride, the flame temperature increased by less than 20 °C. However, ammonium salts increased the flame temperature to over 140 °C, despite the presence of water. The practical significance is that the results were taken into account during the design and development of extinguishing agents for extinguishing fires. Therefore, there are reasons to assert the possibility of regulating flame extinguishing processes by using inorganic compounds capable of inhibiting active flame radicals

Structures and bonding characteristics of KCl(H2O)n clusters with n = 1-10 based on density functional theory.

Aqueous inorganic salt solutions play a prominent role in both physiological and chemical experiments, and significant attention has been directed toward understanding the mechanisms underlying salt dissolution. In our effort to elucidate the hydration process of potassium chloride, we employed a comprehensive genetic algorithm to explore the structures of KCl(H2O)n (n = 1-10). A series of stable structures were identified by high-level abinitio optimization and single-point energy calculations with a zero-point energy correction. An analysis of the probability distribution of KCl(H2O)1-10 revealed that clusters with high probability at low temperatures exhibit reduced probabilities at higher temperatures, while others become more prevalent. When n = 1-9, the contact ion pair configurations or partially dissociated structures dominate in the system, and the probability distribution plot shows that the proportion of the solvent-separated ion pair (SSIP) structures of KCl(H2O)n is very small, while the SSIP configuration in KCl(H2O)10 becomes a stable structure with increasing temperature. The results from natural bond orbital analysis reveal a stronger interaction between chloride ions and water molecules. These findings provide valuable insights for a more comprehensive understanding of the intricacies of potassium chloride dissolution in water.

The possibility of obtaining a modified lignosulfonate reagent based on acrylic and lignosulfonate components is considered. To study the effect of electrolytes on the surface activity of a complex reagent based on acrylic and lignosulfonate components, the surface tension of aqueous solutions of inorganic salts of NaCl and CaCl2 of different concentrations was determinedwith the introduction of 0.1 to 2% of the reagent. The assessment of adsorption activity was carried out on the basis of constructingan isotherm of surface tension at the liquid-liquid interface under static conditions in time at a constant concentrationof the reagent. The possibility of a modified lignosulfonate reagent to effectively reduce the conditional viscosity of clay drilling mud in the temperature range from 20 to 180°C has been established.

Modeling of transport phenomena in a hybrid forward osmosis-directional freeze crystallization process for clean water recovery from hydrometallurgical effluents.

Sustainable water recovery and reuse are critical yet challenging, especially from industrial effluents in cold regions. This work presents a robust numerical model of the transport phenomena in a hybrid two-step forward osmosis (FO)-directional freeze crystallization (DFC) desalination process, whose application in areas with cold climates is advantageous. Deionized (DI) water and a hydrometallurgical effluent were considered as the feed solution in the FO step, while three aqueous solutions of inorganic salts were considered as the draw solutions (DS): NaCl, CaCl2, and MgCl2. The effects of temperature and initial DS concentration were investigated on water flux, reverse solute flux, and specific water flux using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Based on the simulation results, the highest water flux (18 L/m2/h for DI water and 5 L/m2/h for the hydrometallurgical effluent) and lowest reverse solute flux (consistently below 0.3 mol/m2/h) were obtained when MgCl2 was used as the DS. The effect of solute type in the DS on both water recovery yield and purity was in turn studied in the subsequent DFC step, allowing to visualize the solute distribution during the freezing process.

Characteristics of nano-sized composites based on rare earth orthoferrites and hematite

Photocatalysts based on orthoferrites of rare earth elements are used to neutralize a number of harmful substances and organic dyes under the influence of visible light, which makes them to promise the introduction of resource-saving water purification technologies. The thermal-gravimetric analysis, X-ray phase analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy was used to study nanoscale samples of orthoferrites of rare earth elements and hematite obtained by the chemical precipitation of aqueous solutions of inorganic salts of ferrum with lanthanides (La, Er, Sm, Dy, Nd, Yb ) and Y in a weakly alkaline environment and subsequent heat treatment of sediments at 800 and 1100 °C. It was found that during the simultaneous precipitation of hydroxide phases of ferrum and REE, their transformation under the influence of temperature is spatially separated due to the differences in the temperatures of phase transformations and the hydrogen index of the precipitation of precursor phases. It is shown that, depending on the chemical composition of the initial solutions, goethite is formed in the temperature range of 190-250 °C, and the formation of hematite takes place at 425-450 °C. Dehydroxylation of lanthanum hydroxide is observed at 300-330 °С, and the formation of lanthanum oxides continues in the range from 390 to 900 °С. The perovskite phase crystallizes at 960 °C. Using the X-ray phase analysis method, it was established that hematite and a mixture of REE oxygen phases are present in the sediments heat-treated at 800 °C. At 1100 °C, the structure of perovskite and hematite with particle sizes from 25 to 40 nm was identified in the composition of the powders. It was determined that the removal of auxiliary substances takes place at temperatures of 650-770 °C and no impurities of K, Na, S, Cl, or C in the powders fired at 1100 °C. Hematite and perovskite particles are well crystallized and form fragile aggregates, the specific surface area of the samples is several m2/h.

Observation and analysis of stimulated Raman scattering derived from saturated aqueous solutions of inorganic salts

Frequency conversion based on stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) is an effective and appealing method for generating new laser wavelengths. We report the generation of SRS derived from NO3−, SO42−, and CO32− stretching vibrations in three kinds of saturated aqueous solutions of inorganic salts (NaNO3, MgSO4, and K2CO3), pumped by a 532 nm frequency-doubled Nd: YAG laser. The maximal conversion efficiencies of SRS in three kinds of saturated aqueous solutions were measured, which correspond to ∼11%, 7%, and 5.5%, respectively. The 1st–3rd Stokes Raman and total conversion efficiencies were calculated using Raman coupled equations. Also, we analyze and discuss the affecting factors on the conversion efficiency of Stokes Raman. This work will be significant for future applications of SRS in obtaining new laser wavelengths in solutions.

Recovery of Model Pharmaceutical Compounds from Water and Organic Solutions with Alginate-Based Composite Membranes.

In this work, we combined the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) and further cross-linking by cations towards the preparation of nanofiltration membranes based on sodium alginate, a biodegradable, natural polymer. Acetone, ethanol, toluene, and hexane were used as non-solvents, and cations of calcium, silver, and aluminum—for polymer cross-linking, respectively. Results showed the precipitation strength of non-solvent played a noticeable role in the membrane’s performance; for instance, the toluene permeability changed by four orders of magnitude with the decrease of precipitation strength of the non-solvent: acetone (Ptoluene = 0.1 kg∙m−2∙h−1∙bar−1) < ethanol (3 kg∙m−2∙h−1∙bar−1) < hexane (41 kg∙m−2∙h−1∙bar−1) < toluene (415 kg∙m−2∙h−1∙bar−1). It was shown that simultaneous precipitation and crosslinking in aqueous solutions AlCl3 or AgNO3 must be used in the preparation of alginate membranes for the highly selective recovery of pharmaceutical compounds from organic media. These membranes show rejection R = 90–93% of substances with MW = 626 g/mol and ethanol permeability PEtOH = 1.5–2.5 kg∙m−2∙h−1∙bar−1. For the highly selective recovery of pharmaceutical compounds from water, the method of obtaining membranes must be changed. Precipitation in toluene and then crosslinking in aqueous solutions of AlCl3 or AgNO3 must be used sequentially instead of simultaneous precipitation and crosslinking in aqueous solutions of the same inorganic salts. The permeability of such membranes varied from 0.44 to 7.8 kg∙m−2∙h−1∙bar−1 depending on the crosslinking cation in the alginate. The rejection of model substances with MW 350 and 626 g/mol were on the level of 99%. Alginate membranes can be used to solve separation problems in the pharmaceutical field, for example, to isolate antibiotics from their extractants and remove the same antibiotics from aqueous pharmaceutical waste to prevent their accumulation in the environment and the emergence of resistant genes and bacteria.

Studying Grain Flow Immersion into Liquids of Various Densities Based on the Methods of Experiment Design

Introduction. In addition to grain, a grain heap of rye may contain poisonous ergot sclerotia. Modern grain cleaning machines do not isolate ergot sclerotia in one technological process because of the similarity of physical properties in linear dimensions. Isolation of ergot sclerotia from rye grain in one technological process is possible through the use of aqueous solutions of inorganic salts. The purpose of the study is to determine the optimum elevation of the loading hopper relative to the liquid surface. The data obtained contribute to increasing the quality of the technological process of the machine being developed. Materials and Methods. The paper considers the delivery of rye grain flow from the loading hopper outlet into the liquid by varying the specific grain load, liquid density and the delivery height. To set up the experiments, the experiment design methods have been used. The experimental data have been processed using the statistical package Statgraphics Plus 5.1. Results. The estimation of the effective elevation of the loading hopper outlet relative to the liquid surface when delivering grain flow has been carried out. There have been obtained regression models for the fraction of grains, which did not submerge and rose up to the liquid surface with air bubbles. Discussion and Conclusion. It has been found that the density of the aqueous salt solution has a significant effect on the percentage of grains, which did not submerge and rose up to the liquid surface with air bubbles. The smallest values of at different density of the liquid and specific grain load are achieved at a grain delivery height 56.0 ∙ 10–3 m.

Dielectric Characteristics, Electrical Conductivity and Solvation of Ions in Electrolyte Solutions

Solvation and association of ions in solutions largely depend on the dielectric properties of the solvent, the distance between ions in solutions, and temperature. This paper considers the effect of temperature on static dielectric constant (DC), dipole dielectric relaxation (DR) time, and limiting (ultimate) high frequency (HF) electrical conductivity (EC) of water and some polar solvents. In the investigated temperature range (0–370 °C), the static DC and DR time of water decrease, and limiting HF EC passes through a maximum at 250–300 °C with temperature growth. The dielectric characteristics of methanol, ethanol, and propanol behave in a similar way. It is shown that the existence of an HF EC temperature maximum is due to the different nature of the temperature dependences of DC and DR time. It is suggested that the same dependences are responsible for the presence of a maximum in the temperature dependences of the dissociation degree and the ionic product of water. The influence of non-electrolytes concentration as well as metal salts on the dielectric properties of their aqueous solutions is considered. The limiting HF EC of water determines the specific EC value of aqueous electrolyte solutions. Analysis of the absorption of microwave energy by polar solvents, as well as aqueous solutions of non-electrolytes and electrolytes, at a frequency of 2455 MHz is carried out. The optimal conditions for high-frequency heating of solutions have been established. The distance between ions in aqueous solutions of inorganic salts and in non-aqueous solutions of ionic liquids is calculated. It is shown that the maximum on the concentration dependence of the specific EC can be related to ions association.

Extraction-chromatographic determination of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances in objects of complex matrix composition

A comparison of the capabilities of two methods for extraction-chromatographic determination of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances in various objects (syrups, ointments, tablets, herbal mixtures, etc.), the screening methanol method commonly used in the practice of customs and forensic examination and the proposed extraction method based on the use of water phase (in particular, water solutions of salts) for preliminary effective separation of analytes from matrix components was made. In extraction systems of hexane–water, hexane–aqueous solutions of inorganic salts (sodium chloride, dipotassium phosphate and potassium carbonate), chloroform–water, the method of gas chromatography – mass spectrometry was used to determine the distribution constants (P) of organic bases – narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances (N-methylephedrine, methamphetamine, amphetamine, methadone, dihydrocodeine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, ketamine, cocaine zolpidem, fentanyl, harmine, harmaline). Based on the obtained extraction characteristics of analytes and matrix components, the optimal extractants and extraction conditions, which ensure the maximum efficiency of separation of analytes and matrix components, as well as the concentration of the analyte were substantiated. The use of extraction using water and aqueous solutions of salts provides both a sharp decrease in the detection limit (from 10–3 to 10–7 mol/dm3) in comparison with the methanol method and stable working of chromatographic equipment due to the removal of thermally unstable matrix components was shown.

Simultaneous Anodic and Cathodic Exfoliation of Graphite Electrodes in an Aqueous Solution of Inorganic Salt

AbstractElectrochemical exfoliation of graphite offers a scalable and efficient approach to synthesise graphene nanomaterials. This process is commonly performed either anodically or cathodically, whereas simultaneous dual processes offer an attractive energy efficient means to produce graphene materials with tuneable properties. Here, we demonstrate a simple electro synthetic approach to produce graphene simultaneously from both a graphite anode and a graphite cathode in K2SO4 aqueous solution. Graphite exfoliation was facilitated by employing 0.5 M K2SO4 as an electrolyte at 10 V, where efficient exfoliation simultaneously occurs at graphite foils serving as both anode and cathode. The anodically exfoliated graphene has a high defect density (ID/IG=0.58) and higher degree of oxidation (C/O=11.36), in comparison to graphene produced at cathode having a lower defect density (ID/IG=0.06) and a low oxidation degree (C/O=31.68). The usage of aqueous solution for scalable and efficient concurrent‐dual electrochemical exfoliation of graphite electrodes will facilitate the development of large‐scale production of graphene.

Electrochemically Exfoliated Graphite Nanosheet Films for Electromagnetic Interference Shields

Electrochemical exfoliation of graphite is one of the most efficient and easiest processes to produce high-quality graphene materials. In this study, the efficiency of exfoliation methods for graphite to develop graphene-based electromagnetic interference (EMI) shields with high electrical conductivity was investigated. Exfoliation of graphite was performed in four aqueous solutions of inorganic salts of Na2SO4, (NH4)2SO4, NH4NO3, and (NH4)2HPO4, and the electrochemically exfoliated graphene (EEG) was thoroughly screened to separate out the more defective and small sheets. A 30 μm thick film composed of stacked and overlapped co-doped EEG sheets prepared in (NH4)2SO4 had a room-temperature electrical conductivity of 28 400 S/m and an EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of ∼62 dB in the X-band frequency (8.2–12.4 GHz), without any reduction of EEG sheets. These are both high values compared to values reported in the literature for “graphene” films with comparable thickness. This is an excellent EMI SE for a shield thickness of just 30 μm, compared to the very thick initial graphite sheet’s EMI SE of ≈70 dB with a thickness of 1.5 mm (50 times thicker). An original finding in this paper is that using the (NH4)2HPO4 electrolyte, we were able to prepare thermally stable EEG films with excellent EMI performance (shielding effectiveness of ∼50 dB after 3-day exposure to 500 °C in air). These high values for overall EMI shielding and electrical conductivity confirm the feasibility of electrochemical exfoliationfor high-performance EMI shields; i.e. it is possible to use a method that does not involve treatment with harsh chemicals or oxidizers and does not require high energies or high temperatures.

Extraction of medicinal compounds of the benzodiazepines class from aqueous solutions and their following gas chromatographic determination

In extraction systems hexane–water, hexane–aqueous solutions of inorganic salts (sodium chloride, dipotassium phosphate and potassium carbonate), chloroform–water using the method of gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, the distribution constants of psychotropic substances, limited to movement through the customs border of the Republic of Belarus – alprazolam, lorazepam, temazepam, and as well as clozapine, a medicinal product permitted for movement, were determined. The greatest dynamics of the growth of the distribution constant versus salt concentration was observed in alprazolam. It was found that replacing hexane with chloroform leads to increasing the distribution constants and the quantitative extraction of all substances. However, for the selective extraction of substances from various objects and the simultaneous removal of matrix components, it is necessary to use the systems as hexane–aqueous solutions of salts or hexane–water. Based on the obtained values of the distribution constants of substances, extraction-chromatographic technique for the determination of organic non­electrolytes (benzodiazepines) in various objects is proposed. Metrological characteristics of the techniques are: relative standard deviation does not exceed 2 %, the range of determined concentrations in solutions is 0,05– 1,00 g/dm3.

Effects of different solutes on the physical chemical properties of aqueous solutions via rearrangement of hydrogen bonds in water

The Attenuated Total Reflection – Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectra of the OH-stretch band in aqueous solutions of inorganic salts and organic materials; Na2SO4, NaCl, NaClO4, NaSCN, trimethylamine N-oxide, urea, poly(ethylene glycol), polyvinylpyrrolidone, and copolymer of ethylene glycol and propylene glycol (Ucon) were studied at various concentrations. The decomposition of the band into four Gaussian components peaking at 3080, 3230, 3400, and 3550 cm−1 fits every compound examined here with essentially flat residuals. These components were viewed as representing four different subpopulations of water with different H-bond arrangements. The experimentally estimated relative contributions of these components depend on solute type and concentration, and correlate strongly with previously reported experimentally measured solvent features of water such as solvent dipolarity/polarizability, π*, solvent H-bond donor acidity, α, and solvent H-bond acceptor basicity, β. We suggest that water includes an ensemble of four different subpopulations of molecules with various hydrogen bond strengths, geometry, and bond defects depending on the solute. This assumption is obviously oversimplified, but for the wide range of solutes examined here we find that a given solute changes the relative amounts of these subpopulations and hence the above solvent features of water. The solvent features, π* and α, in particular, describe a variety of physicochemical properties, such as water activity, osmotic coefficient, relative viscosity, permittivity, and surface tension, of aqueous solutions of various compounds. It follows therefore that all these physicochemical properties of aqueous solutions are determined by the relative amounts of the above subpopulations of water molecules.

Theoretical Underpinnings of the Parameters of Device for Cleaning Grain from Ergot Sclerotia

Introduction. The grain collected by a combine contains not only full-weight grain, but also weeds, including harmful ones, which include toxic ergot sclerotia. Existing grain cleaning machines cannot provide complete separation of toxic ergot sclerotia during a single technological process, because of the similarity of physical properties. A complete separation of ergot from grain in one technological process is possible by density using aqueous solutions of inorganic salts. Therefore, an urgent issue is the development of a machine for separating harmful impurities in a wet way. Materials and Methods. We consider the fall of grains of rye, wheat, barley and oats, which have a shape close to ellipsoidal, from the outlet of the loading hopper into a liquid with a density of 1.0; 1.05; 1.10 and 1.15 ∙ 103 kg/m3. Theoretical explorations were undertaken for grain density (1.2...1.5) ∙ 103 kg/m3, a length (5.0...10.0) ∙ 10–3 m, a width (1.4...3.6) ∙ 10–3 m and thickness (1.2...3.5) ∙ 10–3 m by mathematical modeling methods using the laws of mechanics and hydrodynamics. Results. For the development of a machine for a wet separation of harmful impurities, the height of the location of the outlet of the loading hopper relative to the surface of an aqueous salt solution was estimated. The formulas are obtained for determining the minimum height required to overcome the Archimedean ellipsoid grain force, surface tension forces and fluid hydrodynamic resistance, taking into account the law of conservation of energy. Discussion and Conclusion. It was found that the minimum height of the loading hopper outlet location relative to the liquid surface depends on the orientation of the grains at the moment of entering it, their linear dimensions and density, as well as the density of an aqueous salt solution. The height of the outlet of the loading hopper, necessary for guaranteed overcoming of the surface tension of the liquid by all grains, is 57.1 ∙ 10–3 m.

Controlling H*- and J-aggregation of an indotricarbocyanine dye in aqueous solutions of inorganic salts

Aggregation process of a symmetrical cationic indotricarbocyanine dye in aqueous medium was studied. It was shown that self-assembled H*-aggregates with an absorption peak at 514 nm as well as J-aggregates with an absorption peak at 777 nm can be obtained. Both of the aggregate types are non-fluorescent. High concentration of a desired aggregate type can be obtained and stabilized by changing ionic strength and pH of the solution. At ionic strength of 170 mmol/L and pH 7.4 J-aggregates are stable. Decreasing pH as well as ionic strength leads to demise of J-aggregates and concomitant formation of H*-aggregates. Increasing temperature leads to a faster H*-aggregate formation. The type of aggregates can be changed by heating and subsequent cooling of the solution. An organic compound forming both H*- and J-aggregates has never been observed before. The fact that the H*- and J-bands are narrow, the shift between them is significant, the J-band is located in the far-red spectral region, and the type of aggregates can be controlled makes these objects promising for future applications.

Kinetics and Mechanism of Cation-Induced Guest Release from Cucurbit[7]uril.

The release of two organic guests from cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) was selectively monitored by the stopped‐flow method in aqueous solutions of inorganic salts to reveal the mechanistic picture in detail. Two contrasting mechanisms were identified: The symmetric dicationic 2,7‐dimethyldiazapyrenium shows a cation‐independent complex dissociation mechanism coupled to deceleration of the ingression in the presence of alkali and alkaline earth cations (Mn+) due to competitive formation of CB7–Mn+ complexes. A much richer, unprecedented kinetic behaviour was observed for the ingression and egression of the monocationic and non‐symmetric berberine (B+). The formation of ternary complex B+–CB7–Mn+ was unambiguously revealed. A difference of more than two orders of magnitude was found in the equilibrium constants of Mn+ binding to B+–CB7 inclusion complex. Large cations, such as K+ and Ba2+, also promoted B+ expulsion from the ternary complex in a bimolecular process. This study reveals a previously hidden mechanistic picture and motivates systematic kinetic investigations of other host–guest systems.

Boron-Based Anolyte for Non-Aqueous Redox Flow Batteries

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) that employ dissolved electroactive materials to store energy have attracted growing attention because of their great potential to store renewable but intermittent solar and wind energy. The unique technological merits of decoupled energy and power leads to high flexibility and scalability in design for the RFBs to satisfy a wide range of energy/power applications[1,2]. In established traditional RFBs, the electroactive species are aqueous solutions of redox-active inorganic transition-metal salts including all-vanadium, iron-chromium and zinc-bromine RFBs. Despite immense progress, the attainable cell voltages in these aqueous systems are largely limited by the narrow electrochemical stability window of water (1.5V). As a result, aqueous RFBs suffer from low energy densities and in turn require more electroactive materials and supporting salts to achieve high storage capacity[3,4]. To address these limitations, recent research is shifting to non-aqueous RFBs (NARFBs) that utilize non-aqueous solvents, taking advantage of the wider electrochemical windows over ~5 V depending on the organic solvent employed. A variety of electro-active species including organic redox-active molecules and organometallic complexes have been used in NARFBs[5,6]. Here, we will introduce our research efforts on the development of boron-based redox active anode molecules for non-aqueous redox flow batteries. We have investigated the electrochemical properties of boron-based anode molecules with different substitution groups and the cyclic voltammetry (CV) results indicate that the boron-based redox active molecule with di-tert-butyl substituted (DTBF2) exhibits superior electrochemical reversibility and stability and low half wave potential of -1.82V. When paired with the catholyte 2,5-ditert-butyl-1-methoxy-4-[2′-methoxyethoxy]benzene (DBMMB), the cell voltage can reach up to 2.56V. The built redox flow cell demonstrates an energy efficiency of 80% and capacity retention of 99.3% per cycle, as shown in figure 2. These initial results proved that this readily synthesized boron-based redox active anode is promising anolyte for NARFBs.More experimental data and results will be disclosed during the meeting.
