Total Quality Management (TQM) in Gram Panchayats of Kerala: A Case of Derailed Mission

The charm of the Kerala Model of Decentralisation is its good governance initiatives and strategy of the People’s Plan Campaign (PPC). In addition, Total Quality Management (TQM) is implemented to improve the service delivery of Local Governments (LGs) and to obtain ISO certificate. This TQM-ISO mission is a process of attitude change and is considered as a step towards excellence in the service delivery of LGs. This article is a status review of the efficiency of TQM in LGs. The literature provides ample evidence that the TQM approach enhances citizens’ satisfaction. However, this study found that the TQM in LGs of Kerala become mechanistic. This is due to the overemphasis on hard aspects and ignoring soft aspects. Thus, the implementation of TQM in LGs is a derailed mission and a case of trivialisation. Based on the findings, this study suggests course correction and pursuing TQM in its letter and spirit.

Human Capital Efficiency and Firm Performance of Quality-Certified Firms from EFQM Excellence Model: A Dynamic Panel Data Study

Abstract Purpose The study’s main purpose is to investigate the impacts of human capital efficiency (HCE) on the firm performance of non-certified and quality-certified firms from the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) Excellence Model. The study also examines the relationship between firm performance and quality-certificates from the European Foundation. Design/methodology/approach By using a sample of 282 non-certified and 22 quality-certified firms from 2017 to 2021, the current study employed a two-step system generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation to analyse the empirical data. The dummy variable is used to examine the relationship between quality-certificates and firm performance. The dummy interaction term is employed to quantify the impacts of HCE on the firm’s performance for quality-certified firms. Findings The results revealed that quality-certificates and firm performance have a positive relationship. Quality-certified firms perform better and earn more profits than non-certified firms. HCE has a positive impact on firm performance for both types of firms. Moreover, the quality-certified firms utilize HCE in an efficient way to earn more profits compared to the non-certified firms. Originality This is the first study to use a comprehensive analysis to emphasize the HCE for non-certified and quality-certified firms separately. The effects of quality-certificates on firm performance in the context of HCE are also being highlighted for the first time in this research. Practical implications The current study’s findings are fruitful for academics, managers, researchers, policymakers, and other firm management. The findings will encourage the management of the firms to implement the total quality management (TQM) approach within their firms.

Analysis of the Implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) in Improving Employee Performance at PT Permata Bank Cibubur Branch

A company is an organization operated by the people within it to achieve the company's objectives. To achieve product quality, the implementation of an efficient management system is necessary, serving as both a tool for improving company performance and a measure of employee performance. The company's focus is not only limited to the quality of the products produced but also covers aspects such as processes, human resources, and the environment. Therefore, it is important to include the measurement of productive behavior of employees and to be based on quality improvement, which is also grounded in human resource development. This research is qualitative in nature. Data was collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The theory applied in this research is the Quality Management Theory. The research results indicate that the company's performance in providing quality products and services in the era of globalization is continuously increasing, both in terms of human skills, processes, and the environment. Improving Quality, Productivity, and Cost Aspects of a Sewing Line of Apparel Industry Using TQM Approach

Total quality management (TQM) is a methodical strategy to minimize defects through six processes including choosing the manufacturer, gathering information, identifying the issues, analyzing the current situation, and coming up with solutions, putting the plan into action, data collection, and result analysis. The study investigates how quality, productivity, and cost aspects of a sewing line can be improved by implementing (TQM) approach in an apparel manufacturing industry in Bangladesh. This research concentrates on reducing four primary types of faults in the sewing department of DMC Apparels Ltd., such as uncut thread, up-down, broken stitch, and joint stitch. Proper information on several stitching errors was provided by the operators and helpers and those are used to assess the study in the next step. Performing the Pareto analysis and histograms to identify the primary concerns are part of the analyzing process. Moreover, using the 10 TQM pillars, the implementation step entails establishing the TQM mindset in the sewing line of the apparel industry. Several data-gathering methods are utilized to analyze primary data throughout the study’s final phase. To analyze the acquired data, Microsoft Excel was employed. The percentage of defect per hundred unit was decreased by 1.51% after optimization, as the recommended solutions’ impact on the defect level in the section was found to be quite significant. Significant parameters such as efficiency, quality, and cost aspect were analyzed and showed positive changes after implementing the TQM approach. The new technical layout also allows for the saving of five employees and a 3,000-min labor expense reduction. Finally, the research was completed by analyzing the basic pitch time graph and calculating the overall equipment effectiveness.

Perceived Service Quality at Higher Education Institutions: A Study on the Success Factors of Total Quality Management Practices in Bangladesh

The Total Quality Management (TQM) approach has gained significant attention in the Higher Education (HE) sectors worldwide, originating in the United States in the mid-1980s to drive continuous improvement within higher education institutions (HEIs). While TQM has been widely embraced in developed nations to evaluate service quality in HEIs, its application in developing countries remains relatively unexplored and fragmented. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating students' perceived service quality in HEIs in Bangladesh using the TQM approach. Data collected from 384 respondents across four established public universities in Bangladesh were analyzed using partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and SmartPLS 3.0 software. The findings underscore significant barriers to service quality perception at HEIs in Bangladesh, including a deficient learning environment, ineffective student relationship management, student dissatisfaction, limited student involvement, and inadequate student focus. Therefore, addressing these challenges is crucial for policymakers and practitioners to maintain service quality standards and improve educational outcomes at HEIs in developing countries.

Analysis of total quality management (TQM) implementation in the biotechnology industry

Over the past two decades, the relevance of the Total Quality Management (TQM) model has increased significantly. TQM is becoming increasingly popular as organizations focus more on improving the quality of their products, services, and internal operations to increase customer value and gain competitive advantage. Organizations from the biotechnology sector play a significant role in the development of the national economy, the social sphere and employment. In such a situation, they face strong competitive advantages of competitors from all over the world, such as low costs and high productivity. The change in the amount of added value alone over the last 10 years leads to an increase of 35.2% per year. In 2009 is BGN 12 million, and in 2019 is BGN 208 million. That is why it is critical for them to improve their organizational performance through the Total Quality Management (TQM) approach. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the individual components of TQM in organizations from the field of biotechnology and food industry and to determine its model in terms of engineering activities. Pre-designed questionnaires were used as a data collection instrument in the present study. Conducting semi-structured interviews with team leaders in a biotech manufacturing organization provides insight into the impact of TQM on competitiveness. These elements, leadership skills and supplier/customer relationships have been found to play an important role in improving overall performance.

The effect of the comprehensive quality management strategies on environmentally responsible activities and the performance of the organizations

The objective of this research is to investigate the impact of Total Quality Management (TQM) principles on the effectiveness of sustainable practices, as well as the effects of these practices on the entire performance of firms that operate within this industry. The study will look at how these practices have become more efficient. It is still necessary to conduct additional research to fill the information gap concerning the effect of TQM approaches on sustainable practices and overall organizational performance in the Jordan Tourism sector. The study will place a particular emphasis on the significance of TQM methodologies and sustainable practices in enhancing organizational dynamics and competitiveness. The research chose the following TQM practices: supplier partnership, leadership commitment, quality management system, and teamwork and collaboration to measure their impacts on building sustainable practices and improving organizational performance through distributed 221 research questionnaires and retrieved 187 valid data. The Jordanian tourism industry will serve as the setting for an examination into the relationship between TQM methodologies, sustainable practices, and organizational outcomes. The analysis will be carried out through the utilization of a case study technique in the Jordan tourism board which is considered the largest tourism institution in Jordan's tourism sector. The research endeavors to provide significant insights into the effectiveness of TQM implementation and provides information concerning the impact that TQM has on sustainable practices and the overall performance of organizations. The findings of the research are intended to provide practical consequences for businesses that cater to tourists in Jordan in the goal of achieving a sustained competitive advantage and improving overall performance. The significance of adopting TQM principles into sustainable operations will be brought into crystal clearer focus. Businesses in the tourist industry can intentionally implement and make use of TQM techniques to improve their sustainable practices, improve the quality of their services, and ultimately boost their competitiveness in the market and increase their chances of success. This research aims to present empirical data on the impact of TQM approaches on sustainable practices and overall organizational performance in the Jordanian tourism industry.

This article discusses the concept of Total Quality Management (TQM) and its application in the context of education, specifically Islamic education. TQM is an approach that encompasses two interconnected concepts: the philosophy of continuous improvement and methods such as brainstorming and field analysis to enhance quality. The article explains that TQM is a holistic and systematic approach aimed at achieving long-term excellence in quality, with a focus on customers and a commitment to continuous improvement. The concept of Total Quality Management (TQM) in education addresses aspects such as customer service, participation of all relevant parties, measurement of graduate quality, stakeholder commitment, and continuous improvement. The success of TQM is measured through customer satisfaction levels, both among students and parents. Awareness of individual responsibility and collaboration within the educational community are crucial for the implementation of TQM. In addressing the challenges of Islamic education, this article proposes the application of the TQM approach, which includes important aspects such as customer focus, participation of all relevant parties, evidence-based approach, leadership commitment, and systemic approach. TQM has proven effective in improving performance and quality in various industrial sectors. This approach emphasizes continuous quality improvement and involves all members of the organization in process and product improvement. In the context of the defense industry, TQM is becoming increasingly relevant to achieve industrial independence and improve competitiveness in the global market. This research uses literature study, data analysis, and case studies of defense industries in several countries. This data is used to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in developing the defense industry with a TQM approach. Fokus penelitian ini ingin mengetahui bagaimana model pengembangan mutu pendidikan melalui Total Quality Manajemen (TQM) sebagai konsep pengembangan Pendidikan? dan analisis konflik pendidikan sebagai implementasi pengembangan pendidikan melalui pendekatan Total Quality Manajemen (TQM). Hasil penelitian ini model pendekatan Total Quality menekankan pada aspek keterlibatan aktif dan penuh komitmen serta konsistensi tinggi dari seluruh anggota organisasi terutama pada aspek pendidikan. Basic Solutions for Managing Activities of Applying Information Technology in Teaching English in High Schools in Ho Chi Minh City Under Comprehensive Quality Management Approach

After 37 years of innovation, integration and development, Vietnam has achieved many great achievements, with its position and strength becoming stronger than ever. Economic development, political and social stability; Culture and society have developed, national defense and security have been strengthened; The material and spiritual life of the people is increasingly improved. Also in that process of innovation and integration, Vietnamese education has achieved many achievements in improving the quality of human resources and promoting the human factor to promote the country's development. With the efforts of administrators and teachers, the management of information technology application activities in English teaching in high schools has initially had positive changes in a number of aspects. This study was conducted to analyze and clarify basic solutions for managing information technology application activities in English teaching in high schools in Ho Chi Minh City according to the total quality management approach aspect - TQM (Total Qualityl Management). The results show that managing information technology application activities in English teaching according to the Total Quality Management model will contribute to ensuring that technology is being used effectively in schools learning, promoting and facilitating the effective application of information technology to teachers' teaching activities and students' learning activities, contributing to improving the quality of teaching. The basic solutions that the article states and analyzes towards managing the application of information technology to English teaching in high schools in Ho Chi Minh City are: raising awareness for officials and teachers. lecturer on the importance of applying information technology to teaching English in high schools according to the Total Quality Management approach; stage control of the management process of applying information technology to English teaching according to the Total Quality Management approach; Implement a quality management system for applying information technology to English teaching according to the Total Quality Management approach in schools. The limitation of this study is that it has not stated and analyzed the factors that affect the management of information technology application activities in teaching English in high schools in Ho Chi Minh City according to the approach comprehensive quality management.

HOSPITAL FOOD SERVICE QUALITY IMPROVEMENT QUESTIONNAIRE (HFSQIQ): DEVELOPMENT, TRANSLATION AND VALIDATION OF A QUESTIONNAIRE

The hospital food service department provides meals to staff, patients, and their caregivers while adhering to dietary therapy guidelines and promoting nutritional wellness. High-quality food service plays a pivotal role in offering inpatients nourishing meals that promote physical and mental well-being, aiding their recovery and overall health during their hospitalisation. This study aimed to develop and validate a tool for measuring and evaluating hospital food operations using the Total Quality Management approach. A literature review, in-depth interviews with food service employees, and a peer-review process were conducted to identify the domains and items for the questionnaire. A “Hospital Food Service Quality Improvement Questionnaire” (HFSQIQ) with 61 items in six domains was developed and the content validation was performed by seven experts. The questionnaire was translated into Malay, and the internal consistency of the HFSQIQ was examined using Cronbach’s alpha. Resultantly, the HFSQIQ depicted high validity and reliability, with a high I-CVI and Kappa index rating for most items and a Cronbach alpha value of 0.97 and 0.98 for the importance and performance scales, respectively. In conclusion, the HFSQIQ is a useful tool for evaluating and improving the quality of hospital food service operations.

Implementasi Peningkatan Mutu Pendidikan dengan Pendekatan Total Quality Manajemen

Competition in the quality of education has become a driving force for educational institutions to enhance their quality in order to compete in society. Just like what has been done by Fastabiqul Khairat Elementary School in Samarinda, they have been focusing on improving the management of educational quality. Therefore, this research aims to examine the improvement of educational quality carried out by Fastabiqul Khairat Elementary School in Samarinda. The research method used in this study is qualitative with a case study approach. Data sources were obtained from observations, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique used was interactive, which involved data condensation, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study show that Fastabiqul Khairat Elementary School in Samarinda has improved its educational quality through the implementation of the Total Quality Management (TQM) approach. The school's approach to improving educational quality differs from other Islamic-oriented schools. This can be seen in its strategic management, which involves organizing programs and establishing professional relationships with external parties. Continuous improvement is also prioritized, such as emphasizing the professionalism of educators in their respective fields. Language instruction, for example, is conducted by specialized instructors, and teachers are equipped to enhance their professionalism both at the local and international levels. The school also collaborates with the Cambridge curriculum to enhance the quality of learning. Adequate facilities and infrastructure are provided to support students' mastery of both soft and hard skills. The school values input from students and parents, actively seeking and incorporating their suggestions. Based on these factors, the management practices implemented by Fastabiqul Khairat Elementary School in Samarinda can serve as a model for other schools aiming to enhance the quality of education through Total Quality Management approaches.

Mapping the TQM implementation approaches and their impact on realizing leadership in Indian tyre manufacturing industry

PurposeThis paper attempts to investigate the approaches used for implementing total quality management (TQM) practices and study its impact on ABC India Limited (Name changed), a tyre manufacturing industry for realizing leadership in the Indian market. The other objectives are to explore the key issues faced by the company before TQM and study the benefits achieved after TQM implementation.Design/methodology/approachA conceptual case study research methodology has been utilized in this paper. The industry was facing some major business challenges such as low productivity, financial issues and low market presence since 1996. To overcome these issues, the top management of the industry adopted TQM as a business improvement tool and started its implementation in 2008.FindingsA good number of improvement initiatives under four TQM approaches such as management approach, development approach, improvement approach and involvement approach were performed systematically and strategically. As a result of the successful implementation of TQM initiatives, the industry received the most prestigious quality award namely Deming Prize in 2017.Research limitations/implicationsWith the implementation of the TQM philosophy in the industry, it gained the top market position, the customer satisfaction score increased from 75 to 81, market presence increased from 7.2% to 26.3% and the percentage participation of employees increased by 73.5% within a period from 2009 to 2016.Originality/valueThe novelty of this research is to consider a case-based approach that will be helpful in promoting the utilization of the TQM philosophy in other industries for gaining competitive advantages.

Reducing complications of femoral neck fracture management: a retrospective study on the application of multidisciplinary team

BackgroundFemoral neck fractures are associated with substantial morbidity and mortality for older adults. Multi-system medical diseases and complications can lead to long-term care needs, functional decline and death, so patients sustaining hip fractures usually have comorbid conditions that may benefit from application of multidisciplinary team(MDT).MethodsThis is a retrospective cohort study that incorporates medical record review with an outcomes management database. 199 patients were included who had surgery for a new unilateral femoral neck fracture from January 2018 to December 2021 (96 patients in usual care (UC) model and 103 patients in MDT model. High-energy, pathological, old and periprosthetic femoral neck fracture were excluded. Age, gender, comorbidity status, time to surgery, and postoperative complication, length of stay, in-hospital mortality, 30-day readmission rate, 90-day mortality data were collected and analyzed.ResultsPreoperative general data of sex, age, community dwelling and charlson comorbidity score of MDT group (n = 103) have no statistically significant difference with that of usual care (UC) group. Patients treated in the MDT model had significantly shorter times to surgery (38.5 vs. 73.4 h;P = 0.028) and lower lengths of stay (11.5 vs. 15.2 days;P = 0.031). There were no significant differences between two models in In-hospital mortality (1.0% vs. 2.1%; P = 0.273), 30-day readmission rate (7.8% vs. 11.5%; P = 0.352) and 90-day mortality (2.9% vs. 3.1%; P = 0.782). The MDT model had fewer complications overall (16.5% vs. 31.3%; P = 0.039), with significantly lower risks of delirium, postoperative infection, bleeding, cardiac complication, hypoxia, and thromboembolism.ConclusionApplication of MDT can provide standardized protocols and a total quality management approach, leading to fewer complications for elderly patients with femoral neck fracture.Trial registrationNo.

THE MANAGEMENT OF ISLAMIC PHILANTHROPIC INSTITUTIONS USING A TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT APPROACH: A CASE IN MAGELANG

This article aimed to find out the forms of management of Islamic philanthropic institutions using a total quality management approach in order to improve the quality of institutional services to underprivileged communities, which was the main goal of establishing Islamic philanthropic institutions. Then, the main focus was to review a book entitled “Model Tata Kelola Lembaga Filantropi Islam: Total Quality Management Approach” written by Nurodin Usman, Agus Miswanto, and Subur in 2021. This book raised a theme of discussion regarding the management of philanthropic institutions in Magelang using a total quality management approach as the main objective of writing this article. Therefore, a study unit of analysis was selected to explore the important findings presented in the book's narrative. Furthermore, several reviews from previous books were added, which had almost the same discussion on the management of Islamic philanthropic institutions. The results of this article contained a discussion about the principles in carrying out every management of Islamic philanthropic institutions using a total quality management approach in the case study in Magelang, which was described in the book, especially regarding the advantages and disadvantages of each principle carried out and how to follow up.

Abstract: The aplication of business ethics is a very important and needs special attention, since a good quality of school service can be obtained if the business ethic applications works effectively. The purpose of this study is to know the business ethics and theacher discipline of the quality of school service. the results of this study suggest that the implementation of business ethics falls at a high category. In addition, the effect of teacher work discipline on the quality of school service is civilised in moderate categories. based of research results, there are several recommendattions needed to improve quality management effectiveness, including continuous improvement and optimizing the total quality management approach. the reseach to discuss how corporate social responsibility must be reunderstood for better education. this suggests that there are mutually beneficial opportunities for national companies and governments to maintain human resources and overcome trade gaps and mismatches. Many companies often train and sponsor individuals to further study for their career advancement. It also indicates that some businesses angage in good behavior to attract prospective workers. In addition, the article argues that the providing of education, professional development and training will increase morale and employee job satisfaction, which in turn may lead to lower staff turnover and greater productivility levels in the workplace.
