An Exception Handling Approach for Privacy-Preserving Service Recommendation Failure in a Cloud Environment.

Service recommendation has become an effective way to quickly extract insightful information from massive data. However, in the cloud environment, the quality of service (QoS) data used to make recommendation decisions are often monitored by distributed sensors and stored in different cloud platforms. In this situation, integrating these distributed data (monitored by remote sensors) across different platforms while guaranteeing user privacy is an important but challenging task, for the successful service recommendation in the cloud environment. Locality-Sensitive Hashing (LSH) is a promising way to achieve the abovementioned data integration and privacy-preservation goals, while current LSH-based recommendation studies seldom consider the possible recommendation failures and hence reduce the robustness of recommender systems significantly. In view of this challenge, we develop a new LSH variant, named converse LSH, and then suggest an exception handling approach for recommendation failures based on the converse LSH technique. Finally, we conduct several simulated experiments based on the well-known dataset, i.e., Movielens to prove the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach.

A Dataflow-Based Scientific Workflow Composition Framework

Scientific workflow has recently become an enabling technology to automate and speed up the scientific discovery process. Although several scientific workflow management systems (SWFMSs) have been developed, a formal scientific workflow composition model in which workflow constructs are fully compositional one with another is still missing. In this paper, we propose a dataflow-based scientific workflow composition framework consisting of (1) a dataflow-based scientific workflow model that separates the declaration of the workflow interface from the definition of its functional body; (2) a set of workflow constructs, including Map, Reduce, Tree, Loop, Conditional, and Curry, which are fully compositional one with another; (3) a dataflow-based exception handling approach to support hierarchical exception propagation and user-defined exception handling. Our workflow composition framework is unique in that workflows are the only operands for composition; in this way, our approach elegantly solves the two-world problem in existing composition frameworks, in which composition needs to deal with both the world of tasks and the world of workflows. The proposed framework is implemented and several case studies are conducted to validate our techniques.

An agent based approach for exception handling in e-procurement management

E-procurement has become an important function of enterprise information systems. The process of e-procurement includes the automatic definition of product requirements, search and selection for suppliers, negotiation and contracting with suppliers. However, the adoption of e-procurement encounters various exceptions from internal and external environments such as sharply increased demand, delivery delay and inventory failure. In this paper, we have proposed an agent and Web service based architecture for exception handling in e-procurement. Agent technology is applied to deal with the complex, dynamic, and distributed e-procurement process, while Web service technology is applied to provide scalability and interoperability. In this architecture, different tasks in the e-procurement process, such as searching, negotiating, supplier selection, contracting, monitoring, and exception handling, are assigned to different agents, which are wrapped as Web services. A set of rules for detecting and handling the exceptions is defined based on a basic inventory model and a genetic algorithm is utilized for supplier selection. To evaluate our exception handling approach, we have developed a prototype system, through which a simulation has been conducted to verify the effectiveness of our approach.

Exception Handling for Conflict Resolution in Cross-Organizational Workflows

Workflow management systems (WfMSs) are being increasingly deployed to deliver e-business transactions across organizational boundaries. To ensure a high service quality in such transactions, exception-handling schemes for conflict resolution are needed. The conflicts primarily arise due to failure of a task in workflow execution because of underlying application, or controlling WfMS component failures or insufficient user input. So far, little progress has been reported in addressing conflict resolution in cross-organizational business processes, though its importance has been recognized. In this paper, we identify the exception handling techniques that support conflict resolution in cross-organizational settings. In particular, we propose a novel, “bundled” exception-handling approach, which supports (1) exception knowledge sharing—sharing exception specifications and handling experiences, (2) coordinated exception handling, and (3) intelligent problem solving—using case based reasoning to reuse exception handing experiences. A prototype of this exception handling mechanism is developed and integrated as a part of the METEOR Workflow Management System. An evaluation of our approach is also presented through some sample workflow applications.

An Exception Handling Approach to Enhancing Consistency, Completeness, and Correctness in Collaborative Requirements Capture

This paper describes C-ReCS, a WWW-based system for collaborative requirements capture that uses a generic knowledge-based approach to detecting and resolving the “exceptions” (i.e. different kinds of inconsistency, incompleteness and incorrectness) that can arise frequently in such settings.

Conflict management as part of an integrated exception handling approach

AbstractCollaborative design conflicts are an important type of process “exception,” that is, a real-life contingency such as a process change, execution error, or missed opportunity that leads to suboptimal performance of a collaborative process. This paper presents an integrated computational approach to collaborative process exception handling that avoids important weaknesses in current conflict management methods through the synergistic integration of conflict, workflow, and rationale technology. The approach is based upon an inclusive dependency language plus coordination services for dependency capture, process enactment, and exception handling. An initial implementation of this method called “iDCSS” is presented and challenges for future evolution of this technology are identified.
