Breast cancer screening motivation among women: an application of self-determination theory

BackgroundBreast cancer is a major health concern worldwide, especially in Vietnam. This study aimed to explore women’s motivation for and factors related to breast cancer screening.MethodsA mixed-methods study was conducted in Danang, Vietnam, using a convergent parallel approach. This study utilized both quantitative and qualitative methods to gather the data. The quantitative approach involved surveys to assess motivation levels and related factors, including demographic information and experience with breast cancer screening. In-depth qualitative interviews were used to gain deeper insights into participants' perspectives and experiences related to breast cancer screening.ResultsThe average motivation score for breast cancer screening was moderate (3.55 ± 0.55). Ethnicity, regular health check-ups, family history of breast cancer, receiving information about breast cancer, and women’s health issues have direct relationships with breast cancer screening motivation. According to the qualitative data, three categories emerged: intrinsic motivation, external motivation/internalization, and amotivation. The individual, and sociocultural environmental factors impacted screening motivation.ConclusionsThis study highlights the motivations behind breast cancer screening among women. Healthcare providers could use these findings to improve screening policies and guidelines and encourage more women to undergo regular screening, ultimately reducing the incidence of breast cancer in the community.

According to self-determination theory, particularly basic psychological needs theory (BPNT), creating social environments, which support the basic psychological needs of competence, autonomy, and relatedness, are associated with individuals’ mental and physical well-being. Therefore, coaches have been encouraged to enact coaching behaviors in their programs based on BPNT. However, few examples exist demonstrating how coaches actually do this. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to provide insight into one collegiate coach’s endeavors to support holistic athlete development and promote thriving by using coaching behaviors which align with BPNT in a Division III swim program.

How university management decision making affects academic educators’ wellbeing, decision making and ability to change

AbstractUniversity policy setting and implementation has the potential to significantly affect the quality and delivery of teaching and learning by effecting academic wellbeing and performance, particularly during times of significant change. Existing research predominately focuses on student wellbeing, largely overlooking academic wellbeing. This article presents a study which illustrates how university decision making can affect academic wellbeing. Fifteen academics were interviewed in June 2023 to explore how change shaped their teaching. Applying the lens of Self Determination Theory (SDT), the data were then analysed to identify how the university’s response to environmental change affected academic wellbeing and performance. The findings suggest that how institutions implement policy decisions, particularly in high stress environments, is critical to understanding how academics respond. This study provides a rationale for why, in times of significant change, clear upper management decision making, and effective resource management systems are essential to support academics in adopting wellbeing and coping behaviours. The authors conclude by recommending that the application of SDT may offer a structured approach for higher education policy makers and management decision makers to identify possible impacts of change on academic motivation, wellbeing and decision making.

Consumer empowerment in the ethical spectrum: Rethinking retention in live-streaming markets

Live-streaming shopping provides a dynamic, interactive experience; however, its associated ethical challenges have raised significant public concerns. Specifically, live-streaming's immediacy and interactivity might intensify ethical dilemmas, like intrusive marketing and lack of transparency, impacting consumer trust and brand loyalty. Initially, this study applies self-determination theory to explore how live streaming empowers consumers and affects brand interaction and decision-making, then investigates the impact of ethical issues on this process. Our findings suggest empowerment does not invariably result in high-quality relationships, particularly when consumer ethics diverge from brand behavior. Subsequently, we employ Hunt-Vitell's General Theory of Marketing Ethics for an in-depth analysis of how consumer perceived ethically mediate the empowerment-relationship quality link. Through three experiments, we confirm the impact of consumer empowerment on retention intentions and the mediating role of relationship quality, also showcasing the negative influence of consumers' ethical perceptions on the empowerment-relationship quality dynamic. This study offers fresh insights into consumer behavior within live-streaming contexts and furnishes empirical evidence for retailers to boost trust and engagement.

Autonomous or controlled interpreters? Model of Werktreue internalization for classical musicians.

Self-regulated learning-a cyclical process in which a learner sets a goal, monitors, and self-reflects on one's learning to set the next goal-is vital in instrumental learning. However, many conservatory students fail to initiate self-regulated learning; they take lessons passively, practice ineffectively, and fail to give satisfactory performance. These learning experiences could harm students' well-being, and physical and mental health problems are widespread among students. Nevertheless, factors contributing to self-regulated learning remain unknown. We hypothesized that musicians' autonomy in musical interpretation, which we refer to as interpretive autonomy, plays a pivotal role in self-regulated learning. Without developing interpretation, musicians fail to set personal goals, monitor, and self-evaluate their performances in terms of musicality. Although previous studies imply that interpretation plays a significant role in self-regulated learning, this has not been clearly demonstrated. Studies on interpretive autonomy are scarce due to a complicated discourse surrounding performers' freedom in interpretation. The ideology of Werktreue underpins the classical music field, and classical music performances are evaluated based on how faithfully a performer interpreted the composer's intention. Yet musicians hold various beliefs regarding the meaning of faithful interpretation, thus the degree of interpretive autonomy cannot be assessed unless its clear definition is provided. In addition, the mechanisms that promote or hinder interpretive autonomy in learning remain unexplained. To address these issues, we proposed a model of Werktreue internalization by applying self-determination theory. The model defines interpretive autonomy based on internalization types, identifies its effects on musicians' learning behavior and well-being, and reveals the mechanisms that promote or hinder interpretive autonomy in learning experiences. This model allows researchers and educators to assess the degree of interpretive autonomy, attribute impaired learning behavior and well-being to a lack of interpretive autonomy, and promote interpretive autonomy by supporting students' psychological needs in interpretation.

Fuelling perceived employability through Leader's expert power: Role of empowerment climate and thriving

After COVID-19, pre-existing perceptions of employability have dramatically changed. Consequently, challenges of workforce sustainability prompt managers to develop non-traditional survival strategies. However, there is limited understanding of how these strategies impact employability perceptions. This study applies self-determination theory and aims to address this gap by investigating how a leader's expert power enhances followers' perceived employability through serial mediation of empowerment climate and thriving at work. Findings reveal a positive relationship between a leader's expert power and follower perceptions of employability. Empowerment climate is positively linked with thriving at work, which in turn is positively linked with perceived employability. Findings indicate that empowerment climate and thriving at work serve as mediators for the relationship between leader's expert power and followers' perceived employability. Support for serial mediation signifies that empowerment climate and thriving at work serially mediate between a leader's expert power and followers' perceived employability. These findings have significant theoretical and managerial implications. Managers should leverage expert power to foster employees' sense of employability by creating an empowering workplace. This enhances employees' thriving and subsequently improves their perceived employability.

Adolescent Social Media Use through a Self-Determination Theory Lens: A Systematic Scoping Review.

Social media is an integral part of adolescents' lives and has a strong influence on development and wellbeing. Research examining adolescent social media use and wellbeing is confusing as findings are inconsistent, inconclusive and contradictory. To address this issue, digital wellbeing scholars recommend that researchers adopt a theoretical approach with the aim of increasing meaningfulness and applicability of findings. Hence, this review applies self-determination theory to investigate how adolescent social media use supports and thwarts the basic psychological needs of relatedness, autonomy and competence. Satisfaction of all three psychological needs is essential for optimal development and wellbeing. A scoping review was conducted using a systematic search of five databases relating to adolescent social media use. The preferred items for systematic review and meta-analysis protocols (extension for scoping reviews) was applied resulting in 86 included studies. Adolescent social media use both supports and thwarts relatedness, autonomy and competence. The findings highlighted how different aspects of adolescent social media use (including intra-personal, inter-personal, situational and environmental factors) contribute to the satisfaction and frustration of basic psychological needs. This review illustrates how social media can be both beneficial and detrimental to satisfying the basic psychological needs of relatedness, autonomy and competence. This is important when considering that if psychological needs are satisfied or frustrated in adolescence, the repercussions can have a cascading effect throughout adulthood. This review identifies gaps in the literature and provides suggestions for future research.

Why is the composition of older adults’ care network associated with psychological wellbeing: an application of the self-determination theory

Objectives Older care recipients have different types of care networks, varying from spouse-only to large mixed care networks, that add to different levels of wellbeing. Applying Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to the care context, we argue that the care network composition may foster or hamper the three basic needs for wellbeing: relatedness, autonomy and competence. Method Data are from ten observations between 1992 and 2022 of the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (N = 18,434 observations from 4,837 older Dutch adults). Five care network types are used: no care, partner, informal, formal or privately paid care. Mixed-hybrid-multilevel regression analysis of depressive symptoms as measure of wellbeing is applied on care network type and loneliness, mastery and care sufficiency as indicators of the three basic needs for wellbeing. Results Receiving care from a partner care network is, compared to the formal care network, the most negatively associated with depressive symptoms, followed by informal care and privately paid care. Differences in care network types existed in loneliness and care sufficiency, but not in mastery, and in part explained the association between care network types and depressive symptoms. Results of between and within effects are comparable. Conclusion Using a rich data set and advanced methodology support the hypotheses that formal care networks hamper wellbeing due to insufficient care and increased loneliness, in particular compared to partner and informal care. The role of mastery was less important, possibly because it does not measure care related level of control.

Self-Determination Theory and Workplace Outcomes: A Conceptual Review and Future Research Directions.

Adaptive workplace outcomes, such as employee work engagement, job performance, and satisfaction are positively associated with physical and psychological well-being, while maladaptive workplace outcomes, including work-related disengagement, dissatisfaction, stress, boredom, fatigue, and burnout, are negatively associated with well-being. Researchers have applied self-determination theory to identify key motivational correlates of these adaptive work-related determinants and outcomes. Research applying the theory has consistently indicated that autonomous forms of motivation and basic psychological need satisfaction are related to better employee performance, satisfaction, and engagement, while controlled forms of motivation and need frustration are associated with increased employee burnout and turnover. Forms of motivation have also been shown to mediate relations between need satisfaction and adaptive workplace outcomes. Despite support for these associations, a number of limitations in research in the field have been identified, which place limits on the inferences that can be drawn. Noted limitations encompass an over-reliance on single-occasion, correlational data; few fit-for-purpose tests of theory mechanisms; and a lack of consideration of key moderating variables. In the current conceptual review, we discuss these limitations in turn, with specific reference to examples from the extant research applying the theory in workplace contexts, and provide a series of recommendations we expect will set the agenda for future studies applying the theory in the workplace. Based on our review, we make three key recommendations: we stress the need for studies adopting experimental and longitudinal designs to permit better inferences (i.e., causal and directional), highlight the need for intervention research to explicitly test mediation effects to provide evidence for theory mechanisms, and outline some candidate moderators of theory effects, including workplace context, job type, pay structure, and causality orientations. We expect these recommendations to set an agenda for future research applying self-determination theory in workplace contexts with a view to filling the current evidence gaps and improving evidential quality.

Applying self-determination theory to internalized weight stigma and mental health correlates among young and middle adult women: A structural equation model.

Limited research has explored the relationship between self-determination theory constructs (basic psychological needs, autonomous/controlled regulation) and internalized weight stigma (IWS). This cross-sectional, online study surveyed 480 U.S. women aged 18-40 between 2021 and 2022. We hypothesized that need frustration and controlled weight regulation would relate to higher IWS, which would be associated with dysfunctional eating, distress, and lower life satisfaction. Conversely, we predicted that need satisfaction, autonomous regulation, and body satisfaction would be associated with reduced IWS, dysfunctional eating and distress, and higher life satisfaction. Structural equation modeling demonstrated an acceptable model fit (CMIN/DF = 2.95, CFI = 0.90, RMSEA = 0.06, SRMR = 0.07), accounting for 74% of IWS variance. Findings indicate the relevance of self-determination theory in understanding IWS, supporting a dual-process model whereby adverse and adaptive outcomes follow distinct pathways. Longitudinal studies are warranted to validate psychological needs and regulatory styles as mechanisms for IWS development and to assess generalizability across diverse populations.

The enablers and stumbling blocks in sustaining growth of women-owned micro-enterprises in India – a qualitative inquiry

Purpose The study aims to understand why women-owned microenterprises (WOMEs) in India experience a lower growth rate, where growth can be represented in increments in the venture’s size or scope. There is no conclusive understanding of the factors that affect the sustained growth of WOMEs in India. Design/methodology/approach What personal, social and economic factors support or hinder the choice, growth and sustainability of women-owned ventures? What role do institutional factors (government, nongovernment organizations (NGOs), self-help groups and microfinance institutions) play toward the sustainability of WOMEs? The answers to these questions were obtained through a qualitative design by interviewing 30 micro women entrepreneurs from Tamil Nadu, a Southern state of India and one of the largest hubs for WOMEs and their responses were content analyzed using NVivo 12 software. Findings The findings capture and apply the fundamentals of two key theoretical perspectives, resource-based view (RBV) and self-determination theory (SDT), in identifying the links between the individual, social and economic factors and their combined effect on the sustained growth of women-owned micro businesses. The findings add value in identifying the ingrained cultural norms and traditions and several internal and external factors that support or challenge the growth of WOMEs. This study highlights that the interventions by the government need to be strengthened for the growth and sustainability of WOMEs. Practical implications The study’s findings provide suggestions to policymakers, banks, funding agencies, financial institutions and NGOs to design applicable policies and schemes toward the sustained growth of WOMEs. Originality/value This study contributes toward a better understanding of the trends in the context of WOMEs from an Indian context. This topic has received little attention in the academic literature. Second, the study’s conceptual contribution is an application of SDT and RBV to understand and categorize the enablers and deterrents in the path of growth of WOMEs, which is a novel pursuit.

Titles as identity: applying self-determination theory to increase sponsorships by experienced private refugee sponsors in Canada

Abstract Private refugee sponsorship is a desirable behaviour – it leads to positive outcomes for sponsors, refugees, the Canadian government and the general public. The most commonly reported motivations to sponsor are related to identity, including moral and national identity. Self-determination theory (SDT) suggests that identity is a strong intrinsic motivator; individuals who identify more strongly as a sponsor may be more intrinsically motivated to take on additional sponsorships. This proposed behavioural policy uses the components of SDT to design a certificate programme that bestows an official title on sponsors after completing a sponsorship. The certificate design reflects the three components of SDT (autonomy, competence and relatedness) and encourages moral and national incentives. Official titles are shown to increase identity with a role – titles act themselves as mechanisms of identity-building, which can lead to identity-motivated behaviours. The proposed certificate programme aligns with existing practices and resources already used by the Canadian government. It suggests that official titles could be a cost-effective mechanism for encouraging subsequent sponsorships.

A classification tool to foster self-regulated learning with generative artificial intelligence by applying self-determination theory: a case of ChatGPT

Generative AI such as ChatGPT provides an instant and individualized learning environment, and may have the potential to motivate student self-regulated learning (SRL), more effectively than other non-AI technologies. However, the impact of ChatGPT on student motivation, SRL, and needs satisfaction is unclear. Motivation and the SRL process can be explained using self-determination theory (SDT) and the three phases of forethought, performance, and self-reflection, respectively. Accordingly, a Delphi design was employed in this study to determine how ChatGPT-based learning activities satisfy students’ each SDT need, and foster each SRL phase from a teacher perspective. We involved 36 SDT school teachers with extensive expertise in technology enhanced learning to develop a classification tool for learning activities that affect student needs satisfaction and SRL phases using ChatGPT. We collaborated with the teachers in three rounds to investigate and identify the activities, and we revised labels, descriptions, and explanations. The major finding is that a classification tool for 20 learning activities using ChatGPT was developed. The tool suggests how ChatGPT better satisfy SDT-based needs, and fosters the three SRL phrases. This classification tool can assist researchers in replicating, implementing, and integrating successful ChatGPT in education research and development projects. The tool can inspire teachers to modify the activities using generative AI for their own teaching, and inform policymakers on how to develop guidelines for AI in education.

The psychological well-being during the COVID-19 lockdown of doctoral students at a private higher education institution in South Africa: An application of Self-Determination Theory

Doing a doctorate can be an experience but it can also be challenging. Doctoral students often experience high levels of stress, pressure, and expectations, which can have a negative impact on their mental health. There is very little research examining the psychological well-being of doctoral students during COVID-19 in the South African context. This study therefore aimed to assess the psychological well-being of doctoral students at a private South African university. A cross-sectional study was conducted with forty-two doctoral students, using a self-completed and validated questionnaire. The data were collected using the QuestionPro online platform. The significant predictor for positive emotion was identified using multiple of linear regression analysis using SPSS version 27.0. Most of the participants agreed highly regarding relatedness, autonomy and competence. Autonomy and competence are significant predictors of positive emotions. This study highlights the importance of perceived competence, autonomy, and positive emotions for the psychological well-being of doctoral students during unplanned and involuntary periods of remote learning. The findings provide insights into approaches that might be employed to enhance the well-being of doctorate students through distant learning, hence minimising the adverse consequences of this particular circumstance.

This research delves into the efficacy of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as a transformative approach to foster intrinsic motivation, transcending traditional methods by emphasizing autonomy, competence, and relatedness. The study systematically reviews existing literature and employs theoretical analysis to construct a comprehensive methodological framework aimed at enhancing intrinsic motivation through educational practices rooted in SDT. The core of SDT posits that satisfying the psychological needs for autonomy (self-governance and freedom in learning), competence (mastery and effectiveness in tasks), and relatedness (meaningful social connections) can significantly bolster the intrinsic motivation of learners. By aligning educational strategies with these fundamental psychological needs, this research hypothesizes that learners will not only exhibit a heightened state of internal motivation but also demonstrate improved learning attitudes and behaviors. The findings from this study provide empirical support for the superior efficacy of SDT-based strategies over traditional reward and punishment approaches. Specifically, the application of SDT in educational settings has shown to markedly enhance children's intrinsic motivation, thereby fostering a more engaging and effective learning environment. This shift not only promotes a deeper, more self-driven engagement with learning material but also cultivates a positive outlook towards education, setting the stage for lifelong learning. In conclusion, the research underscores the significant potential of SDT to redefine motivational strategies within educational paradigms, offering a robust alternative to traditional methods by effectively nurturing the internal drive to learn among children.

Exploring basic psychological needs within and across domains of physical activity

ABSTRACT Purpose This study explored variations in adults’ experience of satisfaction, unfulfilment and frustration of basic psychological needs within and across four domains of physical activity: Transport, household, occupation, and recreation. Methods We utilized a qualitative approach, conducting semi-structured interviews with a diverse group of 42 Danish adults. The participants ranged in age from 16 to 79 years (mean age 49 years, SD 21 years), gender (45% men, 55% women), and physical activity levels (38% low, 33% average, 29% high). Data were analysed using a thematic analysis, applying Self-Determination Theory as the guiding framework. Results In the Transport domain, while most activities were seen as utilitarian necessities, autonomy satisfaction emerged for some through control over their means of transport. In Household domain, tasks were generally viewed as obligatory; however, activities with personal significance led to autonomy satisfaction and skill development. Occupation-wise, physical activity satisfaction varied, with the nature of the job impacting feelings of autonomy and competence. For Recreation domain, personal choice dictated autonomy satisfaction, with competence and relatedness varying according to goal achievement and social interactions. Conclusion The variations in the findings across domains indicate the effectiveness of applying strategies tailored to specific domains for enhancing need satisfaction.

Exploring the perceived benefits of a motivational exercise program (FIT-CANCER) in colorectal cancer patients during chemotherapy treatment: A qualitative study from self-determination theory

Introduction: Physical activity (PA) is considered an important factor to enhance the survival rate and overall quality of life in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. However, a small percentage of patients comply with PA recommendations and most of them decrease their PA levels during chemotherapy. Theoretical frameworks could be useful for guiding exercise programs focused on the promotion of patients’ adherence to PA. Nevertheless, few studies have applied self-determination theory (SDT), one of the most prominent motivational theories, to understand exercise motivation in interventions with CRC patients. The aim of this study was to explore the benefits of an SDT-based 6-month exercise program (FIT-CANCER) regarding satisfaction of basic psychological needs and different psychological and behavioural consequences in CRC patients (stage II-III) during adjuvant chemotherapy. Methods: Qualitative data from 16 patients (nine men and seven women; Mage = 64.00, SD = 11.58), six relatives (Mage = 55.00, SD = 15.09) and five healthcare professionals (Mage = 40.40, SD = 9.66) were obtained through semi-structured interviews and field notes (N = 27). Results: Participants perceived that the motivational exercise program satisfied CRC patients’ needs for autonomy, competence, relatedness and novelty, giving rise to positive psychological consequences during chemotherapy treatment, such as enjoyment of exercise, optimism, vitality, sociability and keeping some good memories. The program allowed patients to feel that they were actively doing something important to overcome their cancer, an aspect that could foster their psychological well-being. Participants perceived that patients increased their exercise participation during chemotherapy treatment, even during the COVID-19 pandemic, with an online adaptation of the exercise program, and integrated exercise into their lifestyle. Participants also highlighted the importance of patients belonging to a group undergoing a similar situation and the instructor's knowledge, specialization and empathy. Conclusion: Motivational exercise programs could help improve CRC patients’ psychosocial and behavioural outcomes during chemotherapy treatment.

Motivation When Desire Is Low: Associations Between Sexual Motivation and Sexual Intimacy, Sexual Satisfaction, and Sexual Distress for Men with Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder and Their Partners.

Hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in men, characterized by chronically low sexual desire, is associated with poor sexual well-being, such as lower sexual satisfaction and higher sexual distress. Additionally, despite their low desire, men with HSDD often report wanting sexual intimacy and validation within their sexual lives/relationships. Studies that apply self-determination theory to sexual relationships demonstrate that adopting more autonomous (e.g., engaging in sex for its inherent pleasure) and less controlled (e.g., engaging in sex for some external reward or consequence) motives for engaging in sex is associated with greater sexual well-being for both members of the couple. Given that autonomous motivation in relationships is associated with intimacy and sexual satisfaction, and lower sexual distress, having sex for autonomous reasons may allow men with HSDD and their partners to feel more sexually intimate despite their lower sexual desire, whereas having sex for controlled reasons may hinder sexual intimacy and satisfaction and augment sexual distress. In this dyadic cross-sectional study, we examined the associations between types of sexual motivation and sexual intimacy, sexual satisfaction, and sexual distress for men with HSDD and their partners (n = 64 couples). Men with HSDD who reported having sex for more autonomous reasons reported more sexual satisfaction and both partners reported more sexual intimacy. Men with HSDD who had sex for more controlled reasons had partners who felt less sexual intimacy and satisfaction, and both partners were more sexually distressed. Promoting autonomous sexual motivation and decreasing controlled motivation may help couples navigating HSDD to feel closer in their relationship, more sexually satisfied, and less sexually distressed.
