Synthesis and polyester printing applications of transition metal complexes of tridentate 5-(m-tolyldiazenyl)salicylaldehyde thiosemicarbazone derivatives

Thiosemicarbazone metal complexes are intriguing molecules with a variety of applications in several fields, including the pharmaceutical sector, analytical chemistry, and textile industries. Here, we designed and synthesized 12 transition metal complexes based on thiosemicarbazone as a tridendate group and azo moiety as a chromophore part, in addition to evaluating their color strength and fastness properties. The tridentate ligand derivatives of 5-(m-tolyldiazenyl)salicylaldehyde thiosemicarbazone reacted with four transition metal salts (copper, cobalt, nickel, and iron salts) in refluxing alkaline ethanol to afford the corresponding thiosemicarbazone complexes. The ligands behaved as double-deprotonated tridentate ligands that connected to the transition metal ions through the deprotonation of phenolic-OH and thiol-SH, as well as the azomethine nitrogen atom, to generate fused five- and six-membered heterocycle rings. The obtained metal complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, atomic absorption, IR, and UV–Vis spectra. The color strength and fastness properties of the printed fabrics were tested, showing good to excellent properties.

Application of Mono and Trinuclear Cyclometalated Iridium (III) Complexes in Differential Bacterial Imaging and Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy.

The application of transition metal complexes for antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT) has emerged as an attractive alternative in mitigating a broad range of bacterial pathogens, including multidrug-resistant pathogens. In view of their photostability, long excited-state lifetimes, and tunable emission properties, transition metal complexes also contribute as bioimaging agents. In the present work, we designed mono and trinuclear cyclometalated iridium (III) complexes to explore their imaging application and antibacterial potential. For this, we used Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), the most prevalent of community-associated (CA) multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria (CA MDR) and Lactococcus lactis (L. lactis) as Gram-positive while Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) and E. coli as Gram-negative bacteria. In addition to differential bioimaging of these bacteria, we assessed the antibacterial effects of both mono and trinuclear Ir(III) complexes under exposure to 427 nm LED light. The data presented herein strongly suggest better efficacy of trinuclear Ir(III) complex over the mononuclear complex in imparting photoinduced cell death of MRSA. Based on the safety profile of these complexes, we propose that trinuclear cyclometalated iridium(III) complex holds great promise for selective recognition and targeting MDR bacteria with minimal off-target effect.

Transition Metal Complexes with Amino Acids, Peptides and Carbohydrates in Catalytic Asymmetric Synthesis: A Short Review

The present review is devoted to the application of transition metal complexes with such ligands as amino acids, peptides and carbohydrates in catalysis. The literature published over the past 20 years is surveyed. Among the distinctive features of these ligands are their versatility, optical activity, stability and availability. Furthermore, depending on the specific synthetic task to be solved, these ligands open up almost infinite opportunity for modification. Largely thanks to their multifaceted reactivity, transition metal complexes with amino acids, peptides and carbohydrates can catalyze most of the known chemical reactions affording optically pure compounds. In this review, the emphasis is placed upon C(sp3)–H activation, cross-coupling and hydrogenation (including traditional hydrogenation in the presence of hydrogen gas and hydrogenation with hydrogen transfer) reactions. The choice is not accidental, since these reactions on the one hand display the catalytic versatility of the above complexes, and on the other hand, they are widely employed in industry.

Effect of drying temperature and drying time on the crystallinity degree of Zn(II)-tartrate complex

This study examines the impact of drying temperature and drying time on the degree of crystallinity of the Zn(II)-tartrate complex. Crystallinity degree is one of many important factors in material science which may alter the properties and applications of transition metal complexes. The Zn(II)-tartrate was synthesized using a direct mixing solution method at room temperature. Drying temperature and drying time were varied at 80 ​°C, 100 ​°C, and 120 ​°C for 1 and 2 ​h, respectively. The obtained white solid of Zn(II)-tartrate was characterized by FTIR and powder-XRD. Analysis by FTIR and powder XRD confirms that Zn(II)-tartrate was successfully synthesized and has considerably good crystallinity degree. The crystallinity of Zn(II)-tartrate is influenced by the temperatures and drying times. The higher the temperature and the longer the drying time, the higher the degree of crystallinity of Zn(II)-tartrates obtained. The crystallinity degrees and crystallite size of the Zn(II)-tartrates obtained in this work were around 74–75% and 16 ​nm, respectively. Further analysis of the selected sample by DTA-TGA analysis shows that the complex has a good thermal stability up to 300 ​°C. Moreover, the DRS spectrum shows that Zn(II)-tartrate absorbs UV light at 200–236 ​nm with a direct bandgap energy of 5.54 ​eV, which is slightly higher than the KNa-tartrate precursor.

Recent Advances in Catalysis Involving Bidentate N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands.

Since the discovery of persistent carbenes by the isolation of 1,3-di-l-adamantylimidazol-2-ylidene by Arduengo and coworkers, we witnessed a fast growth in the design and applications of this class of ligands and their metal complexes. Modular synthesis and ease of electronic and steric adjustability made this class of sigma donors highly popular among chemists. While the nature of the metal-carbon bond in transition metal complexes bearing N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) is predominantly considered to be neutral sigma or dative bonds, the strength of the bond is highly dependent on the energy match between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of the NHC ligand and that of the metal ion. Because of their versatility, the coordination chemistry of NHC ligands with was explored with almost all transition metal ions. Other than the transition metals, NHCs are also capable of establishing a chemical bond with the main group elements. The advances in the catalytic applications of the NHC ligands linked with a second tether are discussed. For clarity, more frequently targeted catalytic reactions are considered first. Carbon–carbon coupling reactions, transfer hydrogenation of alkenes and carbonyl compounds, ketone hydrosilylation, and chiral catalysis are among highly popular reactions. Areas where the efficacy of the NHC based catalytic systems were explored to a lesser extent include CO2 reduction, C-H borylation, alkyl amination, and hydroamination reactions. Diverse emission properties of transition metal complexes beyond exclusive single phosphorescence and their wide applications

• Intersystem crossing (ISC) rate of a metal complex is determined by not only SOC constant of the metal ion. • Various photophysical mechanisms are possible for transition metal complexes. • Emission properties other than single phosphorescence can be achieved by molecular design. • Uncommon emission properties open up novel applications in many areas. • Triplet excited state of earth-abundant metal complexes can be exploited for use by the novel mechanisms. Luminescence properties and excited state reactivities of photoactive transition metal complexes have been harnessed for various applications in the fields of electroluminescent devices, luminescent sensing and bio-imaging, and solar energy conversion as well as photo-redox catalysis in organic transformation. While, beyond the conventional phosphorescence from triplet excited sates that are populated through heavy metal atom induced intersystem crossing (ISC), the past decade has witnessed blooming reports on intriguing luminescence behaviors such as sole fluorescence, dual fluorescence/phosphorescence, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), and dual phosphorescence. All these findings reveal that the possible photophysical mechanisms of transition metal complexes remain relatively underexplored. On one hand, the intersystem crossing (ISC) rate that is crucial to the depopulation of the singlet excited state and thus the population efficiency of the triplet excited state has proven to be not simply dependent on the spin-orbit coupling constant of the metal atom. On the other hand, the decay paths for triplet excited state(s) through reverse ISC (T 1 → S 1 ) and direct radiation from higher triplet excited state have been opened by appropriate ligand design. Moreover, these novel emission properties of transition metal complexes have expanded their applications into the fields of ratiometric sensing/imaging, noble-metal-free high efficiency emitters and photocatalysts and beyond. This review is aimed to discuss the unconventional emission properties and applications of transition metal complexes that were reported mainly in the past decade by focusing on the structural factors that are at play in realizing the novel excited state properties. It is conceived to provide a better understanding of the excited state properties tuning and to direct the design of new emissive metal complexes with tailored functions.

Recent development in catalytic application of transition metal complexes having an M–E bond (E = main group metal or metalloid element), which is stabilized by a multidentate ligand, is summarized. Main group metal and metalloid supporting ligands furnish unusual electronic and steric environments and molecular functions to transition metals, which are not easily available with standard organic supporting ligands such as phosphines and amines. These characteristics often realize remarkable catalytic activity, unique product selectivity, and new molecular transformations. This perspective demonstrates the promising utility of main group metal and metalloid compounds as a new class of supporting ligands for transition metal catalysts in synthetic chemistry.

Antitumor Activity of Pt(II), Ru(III) and Cu(II) Complexes.

Metal complexes are currently potential therapeutic compounds. The acquisition of resistance by cancer cells or the effective elimination of cancer-affected cells necessitates a constant search for chemical compounds with specific biological activities. One alternative option is the transition metal complexes having potential as antitumor agents. Here, we present the current knowledge about the application of transition metal complexes bearing nickel(II), cobalt(II), copper(II), ruthenium(III), and ruthenium(IV). The cytotoxic properties of the above complexes causing apoptosis, autophagy, DNA damage, and cell cycle inhibition are described in this review.

Multimodal Imaging Iridium(III) Complex for Hypochlorous Acid in Living Systems.

Biomolecule tracing with different imaging methods is of great significance for more accurately unravelling the fundamental processes in living systems. However, considering the different principles of each imaging method for probe design, it is still a great challenge to apply one molecular probe to achieve two or even more imaging analyses for biomarkers. In general, traditional oxime was reported as a recognition group for fluorescence imaging of HOCl. Herein, for the first time, we designed the oxime decorated iridium(III) complex, which can be directly used for chemiluminescence as well as two-photon luminescence and photoluminescence lifetime imaging of HOCl in living systems. Moreover, the novel chemiluminescence mechanism of Ir-CLFLPLIM for HOCl was also proposed and explored by continuously monitoring chemiluminescence peak shapes and mass spectra, inferring the reaction intermediate and calculating the chemical reaction energy range of the reaction process. This strategy could lead us to expand the chemiluminescence application of transition metal complexes and develop more multimodal imaging probes.

Impact of Approximate DFT Density Delocalization Error on Potential Energy Surfaces in Transition Metal Chemistry.

For approximate density functional theory (DFT) to be useful in catalytic applications of transition metal complexes, modeling strategies must simultaneously address electronic, geometric, and energetic properties of the relevant species. We show that for representative transition metal triatomics (MO2, where M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, or Ni) and related diatomics the incorporation of Hartree-Fock (HF) exchange in most cases improves the properties of the Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surface (PES) with respect to accurate experimental or CCSD(T) references. We rationalize this observation by noting reduced delocalization obtained with hybrid functionals (20-40% HF exchange), as evidenced by reduced hybridization of non-bonding orbitals and increases in metal partial charges. Although we show that the optimal exchange fraction is both property and system specific, incorporating HF exchange synergistically improves properties of density, structure, and energetics within a single PES characterized by moderately covalent bonding. The same improvement is not observed in the ordering of MO2 spin states, as good agreement of semi-local DFT spin state ordering is worsened by over-stabilization of higher spin states when HF exchange is added. More work is needed to understand minimal functional forms capable of improving multiple properties with respect to semi-local DFT descriptions of transition metal chemistry.

Self-assembled ruthenium (II) metallacycles and metallacages with imidazole-based ligands and their in vitro anticancer activity.

Six tetranuclear rectangular metallacycles were synthesized via the [2+2] coordination-driven self-assembly of imidazole-based ditopic donor 1,4-bis(imidazole-1-yl)benzene and 1,3-bis(imidazol-1-yl)benzene, with dinuclear half-sandwich p-cymene ruthenium(II) acceptors [Ru2(µ-η4-oxalato)(η6-p-cymene)2](SO3CF3)2, [Ru2(µ-η4-2,5-dioxido-1,4-benzoquinonato)(η6-p-cymene)2](SO3CF3)2 and [Ru2(µ-η4-5,8-dioxido-1,4-naphtoquinonato)(η6-p-cymene)2](SO3CF3)2, respectively. Likewise, three hexanuclear trigonal prismatic metallacages were prepared via the [2+3] self-assembly of tritopic donor of 1,3,5-tri(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene with these ruthenium(II) acceptors respectively. Self-selection of the single symmetrical and stable metallacycle and cage was observed although there is the possibility of forming different conformational isomeric products due to different binding modes of these imidazole-based donors. The self-assembled macrocycles and cage containing the 5,8-dioxido-1,4-naphtoquinonato (donq) spacer exhibited good anticancer activity on all tested cancer cell lines (HCT-116, MDA-MB-231, MCF-7, HeLa, A549, and HepG-2), and showed decreased cytotoxicities in HBE and THLE-2 normal cells. The effect of Ru and imidazole moiety of these assemblies on the anticancer activity was discussed. The study of binding ability of these donq-based Ru assemblies with ctDNA indicated that the complex 9 with 180° linear 1 ligand has the highest bonding constant Kb to ctDNA.

The Platinum(II) Complexes Induced Oxidative Stress of Isolated Rat Heart

Abstract Interest for the clinical application of transition metal complexes as chemotherapeutic agents initially started with discovery of cisplatin. Despite the remarkable clinical success, cisplatin treatment is limited due to its resistance and side effects. Over the last 40 years, numerous transition metal complexes were synthesized and investigated in vitro and in vivo in order to establish a metallopharmaceutical that will exert less toxicity and equal or higher potency. We have compared the cardiotoxicity of 2 platinum complexes, one ligand, and a starting salt for complex synthesis using an experimental model of an isolated, perfused rat heart according to the Langendorfftechnique. The cardiotoxicity was assessed by comparison of oxidative stress induced following the perfusion of the following compounds: Dichloro(1,2-diaminocyclohexane)platinum(II), cisplatin, potassium-tetra-chloroplatinum(II) and 1,2-diaminocyclohexane, which were perfused at increasing concentrations from 10−8 to 10−4 M for 30 minutes. The oxidative stress was assessed by determination of superoxide anion radical, hydrogen peroxide, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, and nitric oxide from the coronary venous effluent. Our results showed that the levels of oxidative stress parameters were not significantly affected by perfusion with all the tested compounds and were not dose-dependent. These results could be of importance to further investigations concerning the effects of platinum-based potential anticancer drugs on the heart.

Synthesis, characterization, biological and catalytic applications of transition metal complexes derived from Schiff base

A novel series of Cu(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Co(II), and Cd(II) complexes have been synthesized from the Schiff base. Structural features were determined by analytical and spectral techniques like IR, 1H NMR, UV–vis, elemental analysis, molar electric conductibility, magnetic susceptibility and thermal studies. The complexes are found to be soluble in dimethylformamide and dimethylsulfoxide. Molar conductance values in dimethylformamide indicate the non-electrolytic nature of the complexes. Binding of synthesized complexes with calf thymus DNA (CT DNA) was studied. There is significant binding of DNA in lanes 2, 3, and 5. Lanes 4 and 6 are showing more florescence when compared to the control indicating that these molecules are strongly bound to the DNA by inserting themselves between the two stacked base pairs and exhibiting their original property of fluorescence. Angiogenesis study has revealed that the compounds B-2, B-4 and B-5 have potent antitumor efficacy and activation of antiangiogenesis could be one of the possible underlying mechanisms of tumor inhibition.

Antimicrobial applications of transition metal complexes of benzothiazole based terpolymer: synthesis, characterization, and effect on bacterial and fungal strains.

Terpolymer of 2-amino-6-nitro-benzothiazole-ethylenediamine-formaldehyde (BEF) has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and various spectral techniques like FTIR, UV-Visible, and 1H and 13C-NMR. The terpolymer metal complexes were prepared with Cu2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+ metal ions using BEF terpolymer as a ligand. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis and IR, UV-Visible, ESR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectral studies. Gel permeation chromatography was used to determine the molecular weight of the ligand. The surface features and crystalline behavior of the ligand and its complexes were analyzed by scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction methods. Thermogravimetric analysis was used to analyze the thermal stability of the ligand and its metal complexes. Kinetic parameters such as activation energy (E a) and order of reaction (n) and thermodynamic parameters, namely, ΔS, ΔF, S*, and Z, were calculated using Freeman-Carroll (FC), Sharp-Wentworth (SW), and Phadnis-Deshpande (PD) methods. Thermal degradation model of the terpolymer and its metal complexes was also proposed using PD method. Biological activities of the ligand and its complexes were tested against Shigella sonnei, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella species, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Salmonella typhimurium bacteria and Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium species, Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans, Mucor species fungi.

Organo-Metallic Compounds: Novel Molecules in Cancer Therapy

The discovery of cis-platin in the treatment of cancer there has been a considerable exploration on the antitumoral activity of other transition metal complexes. One of the main problems about the application of transition metal complexes for chemotherapy is their potential toxicity. Recently the attention has been focused on titanium based complexes, which could have significant potential effect against solid tumor. The advantage of Ti (IV) complexes is their relative biological compatibility, which mostly leads to mild and revisable side effects. However, the hydrolytic instability of known Ti(IV) complexes and formation of different species upon water addition makes their therapeutic application problematic, and raises a strong interest in the development of relatively stable Ti(IV) complexes with well defined hydrolytic behavior that demonstrate appreciable cytotoxic activity. Strong ligand binding is also of interest to avoid complete ligand stripping by transferrin, so that the ligand may be used as a target for structure–activity relationship investigations. Titanocene dichloride (Cp2TiCl2) shows an average antiproliferative activity in vitro and promising result in vivo. Recent work has been performed in developing therapeutic analogues of Cp2TiCl2 by varying the central metal, the labile ligands (Cl) and the biscyclopentadienyl moiety. In particular, small changes to the Cp ligand can strongly affect the hydrolytic stability and water solubility properties of the metallocenes and have an impact on the cytotoxic activity. In this review we want summarize the importance of different organo-mettalic compounds in cancer therapy with focus on possible structure modification.
