Effect of Blending of Shellac, Carbonyl Iron Powder, and Carbonyl Iron Powder/Carbon Nanotube Microcapsules on the Properties of Coatings

Nine sets of orthogonal experimental samples were prepared by examining four factors: shellac microcapsules, carbonyl iron powder (CIP) microcapsules, CIP/ carbon nanotube (CNT) microcapsules, and primer coating thickness. By testing the morphology and performance of the coating and using the fracture elongation of the coating as an orthogonal experimental analysis, the maximum factor affecting the fracture elongation of shellac, CIP, and CIP/CNT microcapsule coatings was determined. The first two factors that had a significant impact on the fracture elongation of the coating were the content of CIP/CNT microcapsules and shellac microcapsules. In order to further optimize the coating performance, important factor experiments were conducted, using the content of CIP/CNT microcapsules and shellac microcapsules as variables. It was found that the coating had the best performance when the content of CIP/CNT microcapsules was 7.0% and the content of shellac microcapsules was 4.0%. The optical properties of coatings with added shellac, CIP, and CIP/CNT microcapsules were tested, and the color difference and glossiness of the coatings showed little change. The mechanical properties of coatings with added shellac, CIP, and CIP/CNT microcapsules were tested. The blending of the three types of microcapsules enhanced the toughness of the coating to a certain extent, and suppressed the generation of micro-cracks, demonstrating a good self-healing effect. The electromagnetic-absorption performance of coatings with added shellac, CIP, and CIP/CNT microcapsules was tested. The blending of shellac, CIP, and CIP/CNT microcapsules exhibited two effective bands of electromagnetic absorption and a good absorption performance at a relatively wide frequency range. The combination of shellac, CIP, and CIP/CNT microcapsules endows the fiberboard surface with self-healing and electromagnetic-absorption functions, while maintaining the original performance of the water-based coating. The results can be used for application of surface coatings on wooden materials with dual functions of self-healing and electromagnetic absorption.

Properties of SiCN Films Relevant to Dental Implant Applications.

The application of surface coatings is a popular technique to improve the performance of materials used for medical and dental implants. Ternary silicon carbon nitride (SiCN), obtained by introducing nitrogen into SiC, has attracted significant interest due to its potential advantages. This study investigated the properties of SiCN films deposited via PECVD for dental implant coatings. Chemical composition, optical, and tribological properties were analyzed by adjusting the gas flow rates of NH3, CH4, and SiH4. The results indicated that an increase in the NH3 flow rate led to higher deposition rates, scaling from 5.7 nm/min at an NH3 flow rate of 2 sccm to 7 nm/min at an NH3 flow rate of 8 sccm. Concurrently, the formation of N-Si bonds was observed. The films with a higher nitrogen content exhibited lower refractive indices, diminishing from 2.5 to 2.3 as the NH3 flow rate increased from 2 sccm to 8 sccm. The contact angle of SiCN films had minimal differences, while the corrosion rate was dependent on the pH of the environment. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the properties and potential applications of SiCN films for use in dental implants.

Friction Behavior and Self-Lubricating Mechanism of SLD-MAGIC Cold Worked Die Steel during Different Wear Conditions

Wear tends to shorten tool life, reduce component quality. To prevent or postpone the wear of tool steel forming tools, methods to increase wear resistance, such as increasing the material hardness, optimizing the carbide distribution and application of surface coatings, are often used. However, the formation of lubricating phases in steels leading to anti-attrition is less investigated. The friction behavior of three steels were investigated thoroughly by a tribo test with different normal loads. A Field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) along with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to characterize the microstructure as well as the influence of the precipitated phases on the wear mechanisms. Results showed the friction coefficient decreased with increasing normal load, whereas the wear rate increased with increasing normal load. Compared with SKD11 and DC53 steels, the friction coefficient and wear volume of SLD-MAGIC steel were reduced by 0.1 to 0.3 and 10% to 30%, respectively. With the increase of normal load, the wear mechanism changed in order from abrasive wear, adhesive wear to oxidation wear. The more carbide contents, the rounder the carbide, the better the wear resistance of the tool steel. It can be shown that, under different normal loads, SLD-MAGIC exhibits better wear performance than SKD11 and DC53 tool steels, which is mainly due to the self-lubricating phenomenon of SLD-MAGIC steel. The self-lubricating mechanism was due to the fact that the exfoliated sulfide during wear formed a lubricating film to reduce wear.

Green Approaches, Potentials, and Applications of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles in Surface Coatings and Films.

Interest in the use of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in surface coatings and films has increased as its incorporation can significantly improve the mechanical and antimicrobial properties of coatings and film solutions. In an effort to produce green or eco-friendly products, the potential use of ZnO NPs biosynthesized from natural resources to replace conventional petroleum-derived polymers has been investigated. This review provides an insight into the growing trend of incorporating ZnO NPs into synthetic or semi-synthetic or bio-based polymeric materials via different synthesis methods as well as its characteristics and potential applications in surface coatings and films. The antimicrobial potential of ZnO NPs to inhibit the growth of various types of microorganisms as well as its use in surface coatings or films to impart antimicrobial activities that prevent the spread of microorganisms, especially the COVID-19 virus, was also discussed.

An overview of the application of atomic layer deposition process for lithium‐ion based batteries

Lithium-ion battery (LIB) systems provide a very promising range of power supply systems for diverse applications like electric vehicles, hybrid plug-in electric vehicles, grid storage systems, and microelectronics. Nevertheless, the features of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which include energy density and power, cycle lifetime, safety, as well as cost, must be enhanced in order to achieve all these feasible applications. Atomic layer deposition (ALD), as a result of its unique benefits above other thin-film methods of deposition, emerges as a very useful approach for use in improving the efficiency of LIBs. This review summarizes ALD's advanced successes in designing new nanostructured solid-state electrolytes and electrode materials, as well as the adjustment of the interfaces of electrodes and electrolytes through the application of surface coatings for the avoidance of undesirable side reactions to attain maximum adequate performance of the electrode. Also covered are ideas for the potential advancement of ALD studies and technology for the applications of LIBs. This review paper is anticipated to furnish researchers within the LIB and ALD fields with valuable information that would encourage much more extensive research on the use of ALD to produce new generation LIBs.

Insights on surface characterization of 3D printed polymeric parts

For polymeric materials, FDM provides limitations in accuracy and surface finish. Polymeric 3D printed parts have a rough surface because of the filament deposition, texture of the slices laid and staircase effect. Application of surface coatings to these parts may improve mechanical properties, including surface texture and dimensions accuracy. Recent studies indicate development of surface-coated 3D printed polymeric parts primarily for use in automobiles, aviation, ships, food packaging, electrical, and textile applications. Researchers have studied the impact of surface coatings on surface finish and dimensional accuracy. Various processes, such as icing-delay, anti-frosting, and self-cleaning, benefit from super hydrophobic surface. Super hydrophobic surfaces are characterized by important characteristics, like durability and storage, corrosion resistance. Self-healing polymers are emerging as a novel smart material as they possess the ability to heal upon damage without any external mediation. These can appear in a variety of forms, intrinsic or extrinsic, and can be made to take different forms. This paper presents insights into the state of research being carried out in the field of surface characterization especially on 3D printed polymeric parts.

Thermal stability studies of plasma deposited hydrogenated carbon nitride nanostructures

Thermally stable carbon nitride nanostructures have potential applications in surface coatings and automotive fields. In this work, hydrogenated nitrogen-rich carbon nitride nanoparticles have been synthesised via low-pressure low-power plasma vapour deposition technique from methane/nitrogen gas mixture in a dry process. Thermal stability of the initially prepared hydrogenated carbon nitride structures has been analysed by near-edge X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS, in-situ), Raman spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy and nuclear reaction analysis (NRA). Thermal studies reveal the excellent stability of the material and nitrogen-rich characteristics (N/C ratio 0.5–0.2 ± 0.01). The obtained results suggest transformation of sp3-rich as-deposited carbon nitride into sp2-carbon phase with more graphitic features upon thermal annealing. Such in-situ thermal studies of plasma deposited carbon nitrides confirm the conversion of sp3-rich phase to sp2-rich carbon phase at the critical temperature (about 450 K), without a huge loss in nitrogen content. The analysis revealed that the material is a stable plasma deposit after this critical temperature up to >1100 K. Additionally, super hydrophilic carbon nitride nanostructure transforms into a hydrophobic surface after thermal annealing. These thermally stable hydrophobic carbon nitride nanoparticles could be used as a promising material for the hydrophobic coatings for various applications, especially for harsh conditions.

Improved adhesion between stainless steel heating element and PPS polymer in resistance welding of thermoplastic composites

Resistance welding of thermoplastic composites involves applying an electric current to a heating element, usually a stainless-steel (SS) mesh, which heats up by Joule effect, melts the surrounding polymer matrix and remains at the joint interface following the welding operation. In this study, the adhesion between a thermoplastic matrix, i.e., polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), and the SS mesh heating element is evaluated and improved through the application of surface coatings on the SS. The coatings are based on an organosilane, a bivalent molecule often used to create an organic coating on metals. The efficiency of the surface coatings is evaluated by measurement of the water contact angle on treated SS plates, characterization of the coating by ATR-FTIR, observations by SEM and TEM and mechanical testing of resistance-welded quasi-isotropic carbon fibre (CF)/PPS joints. A lap shear strength (LSS) improvement of 32% is reported for joints welded using the treated heating elements relative to joints welded using untreated heating elements. Double cantilever beam tests between a SS plate and the CF/PPS composite also show a much better adhesion between the PPS and SS following surface coating, with a higher load at failure and fracture surfaces showing polymer and fibre remaining attached to the SS plate.

Magnetorheological fluids: synthesis, properties and applications

The magnetorheological fluids have the ability to modify their viscosity quickly by subjecting it to a magnetic field, a quality that classifies them in the category of intelligent materials. Such fluids include three main components; the base fluid that is generally mineral or synthetic oil, magnetizable particles which are dispersed in the base fluid and the additives or stabilizers that prevent agglomeration and sedimentation of the particles, as well as the degradation induced by the carrier medium. The main challenge of these fluids is to maintain the rheological response to the magnetic field, as well as avoid the chemical and microstructural instability of the magnetoreological fluids. In the present investigation an exhaustive bibliographic review was carried out to understand the main aspects of these types of materials, their properties as well as the main applications in the different branches of industry and medicine. The most recent contributions focused on the chemical stability of magnetic particles through the application of surface coatings are discussed.

Fluence Enhanced Optical Response of Ag Implanted Amorphous Carbon Thin Films

Silver nanoparticles (NPs) are known to exhibit strong interaction with light photons because their surface conduction electrons undergo collective oscillations once photo-excited at specific wavelengths; the so-called surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Their incorporation into carbon-based material is shown to greatly influence the overall optical response of the matrix due to aggregation. In this paper, we studied the optical response of silver-irradiated amorphous carbon films due to varying fluence of 25 keV Ag ions in the range 2.5–3.4 × 1016 ions/cm2. Raman spectroscopy provided an insight into the microstructural details of the Ag:a-C nanocomposites such that access to bond characteristics of the films is enabled by directly linking the Raman information with sp2/sp3 configurations. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis show significant increase in particle grain size and surface roughness of the films with increasing fluence while transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed fluence-induced particle aggregation due to irradiation. Optical absorption studies revealed that the SPR of Ag NPs occurs in the wavelength range 418–395 nm in the irradiated films. The blue shift in plasmonic wavelength response is explained with respect to the fluence-induced increase in the particulate grain size and particle density as confirmed by AFM and TEM. The optical band gap energy ( E g ) of the pristine carbon film decreased from 1.79 eV to 1.41 eV while Urbach parameter ( E u ) increased from 0.01 eV to 12.0 eV, respectively with increasing fluence. These tunable optical parameters can be tailored into applications in surface coatings and as functional materials for solar cell efficiency enhancement.

Inspection of nickel-based boron carbide PTA coatings on AISI 4140 steel

Purpose Plasma transferred arc (PTA) coating is a novel method for surface-coating applications. In this method, the substrate is melted using a plasma arc, and surfacing agents such as carbides are introduced to the melt pool. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of boron carbide (B4C) in nickel-based coating on AISI 4140 steel. Design/methodology/approach Samples were tested on a ball-on-disc wear device, and the microstructure, as well as wear properties, were investigated using SEM and XRD. Findings The effect of B4C addition was shown to be linear, with a p-value of 0.0248, indicating strong evidence. The reason for this increase was found to be the increase in third-body generation resulting from hard phases that form couples with the soft base material, nickel. It was concluded that using 6 per cent B4C was the optimal solution. Originality/value In the literature, the effect of neither low temperature on a nickel coating with B4C nor B4C as a single surfacing agent in a nickel base has been investigated.

Polyurethane/clay nanocomposites from palm oil for surface-coating applications

Synthesis of palm oil-based polyurethane (PU) and the formation of nanocomposite from a mixture of PU with clay filler has been performed. Polyol which is the basic material of PU is formed by epoxidation and hydroxylation process and then mixed with isocyanate. Clay used as filler in this study was obtained from the local area of North Aceh, which is a type of swelling of clay that has been modified with cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide surfactant. Nanocomposites are formed from PU with clay fill variations of 3%, 5%, and 8% by weight of the total mixture of 40 g. The resulting material is tested in character by some type of characterization. Based on the test results with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the hydroxyl polyol group was obtained in groups of 3390.870 (O–H) and –NH as the PU microdomain structure was obtained at a wavelength of 2987 cm−1. Morphological test results using scanning electron microscopy revealed that the addition of modified clay increases the adhesion in the paint and PU coatings and also increases the gloss from the surface and homogeneous material. The thermal endurance test with thermogravimetric analysis reported that the addition of clay fillers in PU showed enhanced effects for better thermal stability in nanocomposite materials when compared with neat polymers. Samples of PU/clay nanocomposites with the addition of 8 wt% clay filler were the most optimum composites among other variations with the thermal degradation temperature value of 296°C. This research generates prospects for applying various industrial surface coatings that are resistant to corrosion and heat, have good mechanical properties, and are more environmentally friendly.

Absorptivity Measurements and Heat Source Modeling to Simulate Laser Cladding

The laser cladding process gains importance, as it does not only allow the application of surface coatings, but also additive manufacturing of three-dimensional parts. In both cases, process simulation can contribute to process optimization. Heat source modeling is one of the main issues for an accurate model and simulation of the laser cladding process. While the laser beam intensity distribution is readily known, the other two main effects on the process’ heat input are non-trivial. Namely the measurement of the absorptivity of the applied materials as well as the powder attenuation. Therefore, calorimetry measurements were carried out. The measurement method and the measurement results for laser cladding of Stellite® 6 on structural steel S 235 and for the processing of Inconel® 625 are presented both using a CO2 laser as well as a high power diode laser (HPDL). Additionally, a heat source model is deduced.

Synthesis and Characterization of some Diazotised Resins from Renewable Resource

Cashew phenol, popularly known as Cardanol, is reddish brown liquid prepared from cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL). Cardanol is found to be an important renewable resource and possess unique phenolic group having a 15-carbon aliphatic side chain at meta position with varying degrees of unsaturation. It is immiscible in water but miscible in most of the organic solvents. It's excellent solubility in number of common organic solvents makes it an ideal choice for a large number of surface-coating applications including paints and primers, varnishes and lacquers, etc. The synthesis of resins involves diazotization of p-nitroaniline followed by coupling the diazotized product with cardanol in order to get diazotised p-nitroaniline cardanol dye. The condensation reaction between the resulting dye and furfural in presence of H2SO4 furnished the homopolymer resin. The homopolymer resin is further condensed with urea and thiourea in order to get the desired copolymer resin. All the steps are preceded with good yields and required simple purifications. The products from each step are characterized using Ultra violet-Visible spectroscopy, Fourier Transform-Infrared spectroscopy and 1H-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy. The expected product formation is confirmed by careful analysis of the spectral results and also compared with the previous literature reports. Further, the synthesized product will be subjected to Inter-penetrating polymer network sheet formation and checked its potential applications in the field of coating materials.

Cationic photopolymerization kinetics of neat coating formulations involving poly(propylene glycol) diglycidyl ether and glycerol diglycidyl ether

Kinetic analysis of formulations based on poly(propylene glycol) diglycidyl ether and glycerol diglycidyl ether was carried out using photodifferential scanning calorimeter. The effects of formulation monomer ratios at different temperatures were studied as photocalorimetric optimization studies of formulation ratios involving diglycidyl ethers are less reported. The nature of cure was found to depend more on the in situ physical parameters rather than on the mechanism of the reaction. The variations in the observed kinetic parameters can be related to interplay of mobility of reactive species, distance of counter ion and the diffusional restrictions. The final conversion was found to increase with increase in poly(propylene glycol) diglycidyl ether content, while the thermal stability increased with an increase in glycerol diglycidyl ether content. Autocatalytic kinetic model was also evaluated, and the system underwent early gelation. The studies show that the intermediate formulations are promising compositions for surface-coating applications.

Hydrophobicity Characterization of Bio-Wax Derived from Taro Leaf for Surface Coating Applications

The hydrophobic properties as well as the presence of 1-octacosanol of taro wax extracted from taro leaf were investigated using various analytical techniques. The bio-wax extraction was achieved by immersing taro leaves samples in 500 mL chloroform at 50°C for 30 seconds and the step was repeated for the same sample using fresh chloroform. The solvent was evaporated using rotary evaporator and the raw bio-wax solution was obtained. Hydrophobicity test showed the average time for the test was 981s which exceeded the 300 s limited for hydrophilicity. TGA results indicate the existence of multi-components in taro wax with the decomposition occurring at three stages. The DSC result showed that the taro wax is composed of at least two contents, ie lower content with smaller melting point range of 50 to 60°C as well as upper content with higher melting point range of 65 to 75°C. Contact angle of droplets of distilled water on the taro wax surfaces were found to be greater than 900 and this confirmed its hydrophobic property. The n-octacosanol presented was identified through FTIR and GC-FID analyses. The functional compounds OH, CH3, CH2, and C=O were detected. From the GC-FID, the n-octacosanol was presented at 34.5 min compared to the standard solution. Plant base taro wax can be a source of sustainable and renewable hydrophobic material for use in HVAC application system.

The Effect of DLC Coating Thickness on Elstohydrodynamic Friction

The application of surface coatings has been shown to reduce friction in elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL), not only in the mixed and boundary regime when asperity interactions occur, but also in the full film regime. Several studies suggest that the full film friction reduction is due to a violation of the no-slip boundary condition and thus slip is taking place between the solid and the liquid. Another hypothesis proposes that the full film friction reduction is due to the low thermal conductivity of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings. In this work, two DLC coatings with the same composition, but different thicknesses, are investigated with uncoated steel specimens as a reference, all with the same surface roughness. Friction tests in a ball-on-disk machine show that both coatings reduce friction compared to the uncoated reference case in full film EHL. The thicker coating is significantly more effective at reducing friction than the thinner one at a maximum friction reduction of 41 % compared to 29 % for the thinner coating. Moreover, contact angle measurements, surface energy measurements, and spreading parameter calculations show no statistically significant differences between the two coatings, suggesting that the friction reduction capabilities of coatings in full film EHL cannot be described by solid–liquid interactions alone. The difference in friction reduction between the specimens in this work is mainly attributed to different thermal properties.

Influence of acrylated guar gum on alkyd coating properties

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the efficiency of acrylated guar gum (AGG) as an additive in alkyd resin for improved mechanical properties and to optimize the results of such an addition. Design/methodology/approach – For studying the effect of AGG on coating properties, guar gum was modified to various degrees of esterification and various compositions of alkyd systems were made by incorporating different concentrations of AGG. The mechanical and solvent absorption of the unmodified and modified alkyd systems were characterized. Findings – The incorporation of AGG into alkyd coating showed significant improvement of mechanical properties over the unmodified one. The modification caused an additional crosslink site through its unsaturation which led to increased crosslink density without phase separation of additive from the alkyd system which was confirmed by SEM scans. Research limitations/implications – The reactive additive, AGG used in the present study was synthesised using acryloyl chloride. Besides, it could also be synthesised from methacryloyl chloride and the effect of methyl substitution on water and solvent absorption could be studied. Practical implications – The method developed provided a simple and practical solution to improving the mechanical properties of alkyd coatings. Originality/value – The method for enhancing mechanical properties of cured alkyd system was novel and could find numerous applications in surface coatings.
