Innovative technology for converting automobile tire waste bead wires into recycled steel fibers for sustainable concrete composites: insights for the Al-Kharj Governorate construction industry

PurposeThe initiative for sustainability in the construction industry has led to the innovative utilization of automobile tire waste, transforming it into value-added products, toward decarbonization in the construction industry, aligning with the development and sustainability goals of Al-Kharj Governorate. However, the disposal of these materials generates significant environmental concerns. As a payoff for these efforts, this study aims to contribute to a fruitful shift toward eco-friendly recycling techniques, particularly by studying the transformation of tire waste bead wires into recycled steel tire fibers (RSTFs) for sustainable concrete composites.Design/methodology/approachThis research delves into how this technological transformation not only addresses environmental concerns but also propels sustainable tire innovation forward, presenting a promising solution for waste management and material efficiency in building materials. Recent studies have highlighted the superior tensile strength of RSTFs from discarded tires, making them suitable for various structural engineering applications. Recently, there has been a notable shift in research focus to the use of RSTFs as an alternative to traditional fibers in concrete. In this study, however, efforts have paid off in outlining a comprehensive assessment to investigate the viability and efficacy of repurposing tire bead wires into RSTFs for use in concrete composites, as reported in the literature.FindingsThis study examined the Saudi waste management, the geometrical properties of RSTFs, and their impact on the strength properties of concrete microstructure. It also examined the economic, cost, and environmental impacts of RSTFs on concrete composites, underscoring the need for the construction industry to adopt more sustainable and adaptable practices. Furthermore, the main findings of this study are proposed insights and a blueprint for the construction industry in Al-Kharj Governorate, calling for collective action from both public and private sectors, and the community to transform challenges into job opportunities for growth and sustainability.Originality/valueThis study pointed to thoroughly demonstrate the technological advancement in converting tire waste to reinforcing fibers by evaluating the effectiveness, environmental sustainability, and practicality of these fibers in eco-friendly concrete composites. Besides, the desired properties and standards for RSTFs to enhance the structural integrity of concrete composites are recommended, as is the need to establish protocols and further study into the long-term efficacy of RSTF-reinforced concrete composites.

Experimental and finite element investigation on bolted connection in monolithic 3-dimensional cuff with pultruded box section

This article presents a concise and practical research study on the application of pultruded GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) hollow sections in structural engineering. Experimental and computational investigations are conducted on the utilization of GFRP cuff components for joining tubular pultruded fiber-reinforced polymer (PFRP) beams and columns. Both adhesive bonding and bolted connections are explored for connecting PFRP box sections of beam-column interfaces. The study investigates twelve series of beam-to-column connections under monotonic loading conditions, varying cuff geometry. A finite element model is developed to represent the pultruded fiber-reinforced polymer box sections, columns, and cuff sections. The model’s accuracy in depicting frame stiffness and cuff damage patterns, considering different thicknesses and lengths of GFRP cuff connections, is validated against experimental test frame behavior. This research fills a gap in scientific inquiry regarding GFRP hollow profiles, providing valuable insights for structural engineering applications.

Failures of geometrically asymmetric steel-UHPC composite beams

Geometrically asymmetric steel-ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) composite structures (SUCSs) suffer several typical failure modes during applications in structural engineering. But the competing mechanism of these failure modes remains a challenge to be urgently overcome. In the present paper, the failure modes of the geometrically asymmetric SUCSs under lateral loads are theoretically predicted and numerically studied. Considering both the geometric asymmetry of the structure and the tensile-compressive asymmetry of UHPC, a theoretical model is proposed to predict the critical failure load for each failure mode (e.g., bending and core shear), and then a failure mechanism map is constructed by comparing each critical failure load. The theoretical predictions are in line with the present numerical results and the previous experimental measurements. The results demonstrate that geometric asymmetry, together with some other geometric parameters and material properties, have remarkable influences on the failure modes of structures. This work provides an effective approach for predicting and designing the failure modes of geometrically asymmetric SUCSs in structural engineering applications, such as undersea tunnels, offshore platforms, and nuclear shielding walls.

Experimental investigations on the fatigue behavior of hybrid basalt/glass fiber epoxy composites

AbstractTo expand the applications of hybrid fiber composites in structural engineering applications, it is essential to study their fatigue behavior. The tensile and fatigue performance of unidirectional hybrid basalt/glass epoxy composites made with vacuum‐assisted resin infusion molding are investigated in this research. The sequencing influence on tensile properties was assessed using the two configurations of basalt/glass fiber epoxy hybrid fiber composites, namely GBBBG and BGBGB, having nearly equal volume fractions. According to the test results, hybrid fiber composites showed a positive hybrid effect on their tensile strength. Both hybrid layups showed higher tensile strengths (3.5% to 10.5%) than GFRPs and BFRPs. The GBBBG laminate has slightly higher fatigue resistance than BGBGB laminate under tension–tension (T–T) fatigue. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images verify the fatigue failure modes, which include fiber, matrix cracking, delamination, and debonding. The DMA analysis showed the lower adhesion efficiency of hybrid fiber composites, signifying lower damping properties.

Innovative modeling of monolayer puckered arsenene: Bridging quantum mechanics and finite element analysis

Current study presents a novel hybrid approach combining finite element modeling and density functional theory calculations to investigate the mechanical properties of monolayer puckered arsenene. The multiscale analysis in this study leverages finite element analysis as a distinctive approach, complementing the nano‐scale capabilities of density functional theory and molecular dynamics by overcoming limitations faced by these two methods in representing complex scenarios. Furthermore, finite element analysis demonstrates computational efficiency for larger structures, making it suitable for systems where atomistic simulations may be impractical. This hybrid methodology offers a unique framework for accurately predicting key properties, including elastic modulus and buckling force, by synergistically integrating the strengths of both computational techniques. In addition to demonstrating the effectiveness of our approach in accurately capturing material behavior, our findings shed light on fundamental aspects of nanoscale mechanics, with implications for various applications in nanotechnology, materials science, and structural engineering. By providing a deeper understanding of the mechanical response of 2D materials, our research contributes to advancing the field of nanoscale materials engineering and informs the design of innovative nanostructures with tailored mechanical properties.

Improved implementation of concentrated plasticity models in real-time hybrid simulation

Real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) is a cost-effective experimental testing technique for evaluating the dynamic response of structural systems. In RTHS, a portion of the structure is modeled numerically (i.e., numerical substructure), while the remaining part is tested physically (i.e., experimental substructure). These substructures are coupled in real time. A significant challenge in RTHS is accurately computing the dynamic response of the numerical substructure in real time during testing. Constrained by this challenge, numerical substructures in RTHS are often oversimplified (e.g., spring-mass-dashpot models), failing to capture more complex dynamic behaviors and limiting the applicability of RTHS. However, with the increasing use of innovative structural systems, new materials, and advanced design guidelines to ensure resilient and sustainable civil infrastructure against natural hazards, the demand for real-time executable higher-fidelity numerical substructures in RTHS is growing. Consequently, concentrated plasticity model (CPM) has gained attention as the numerical substructure in RTHS for its good balance between numerical accuracy and computational efficiency, as well as its popularity in structural engineering applications. Currently, static condensation is utilized to prevent an increase in computational degrees of freedom (DOFs) induced by the hinges in CPM, aiming to save computational cost. However, this method proves counterproductive for nonlinear analyses. While reducing the number of computational DOFs, it complicates the stiffness representation, thereby necessitating more demanding arithmetic operations for stiffness updating. In this study, multi-point constraints are applied to enhance the computational efficiency, specifically for nonlinear analyses involving stiffness updating, and the versatility of CPM. Moreover, direct stiffness updating method and sparse matrix-vector multiplication are introduced for further enhancement in computation. An open-source MATLAB/Simulink-based computational tool, namely the Hybrid2D, is developed to promote the use of the improved CPMs in RTHS as numerical substructures. Numerical simulations are first conducted to verify the accuracy and the computational efficiency of the improved CPMs in Hybrid2D. Subsequently, two RTHS examples are experimentally conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Hybrid2D in enabling RTHS with a higher-fidelity numerical substructure for more complex structural systems.

Effect of cell diameter variations on the mechanical behavior of aluminum foams: Experiments and modeling

Aluminum foams can be manufactured in a variety of cell sizes; however, existing models focus primarily on density and neglect the effect of cell size. Furthermore, aluminum foams with different cell diameters exhibit diverse mechanical properties. In this study, a quasi-static/dynamic compression test was performed to investigate the mechanical behavior, damage patterns, and damage mechanisms of aluminum foams with different cell diameters. The results demonstrate that the compressive properties of aluminum foams undergo significant changes. As the cell diameter increases, normalized initial damage stress and Young's modulus also increase, leading to enhanced energy absorption. However, this increase in cell diameter negatively affects the energy absorption efficiency, resulting in increased instabilities. A finite element analysis was conducted using the LS-DYNA finite element software to investigate the behavior of aluminum foils under all the experimentally tested loading regimes. The simulation results reveal that the deformation zone formed due to collapse diminishes with increasing cell diameter. More importantly, a new damage mechanism named central cell cleavage was reported, which increased the energy absorption capacity and amplified the instability during deformation. This study offers novel insights into the mechanical behaviors exhibited by aluminum foams, thereby facilitating their application in structural engineering.

THE STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOR OF RECYCLED AGGREGATE CONCRETE WALLS UNDER FIRE EXPOSURE: A FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS

Climate change is raising the demand for change in the construction industry, particularly in the concrete industry. One of the approaches to increase sustainability in the concrete industry is the use of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). Many studies examined the type and composition of RAC used in construction applications. However, fewer studies examined the structural engineering applications of RAC. Thus, this study investigates the use of RAC in bearing walls. It presents a comprehensive thermal and structural performance assessment of RAC walls exposed to fire using finite element analysis (FEA). The FE model incorporates experimental material models in the literature that consider the degradation of the mechanical properties of RAC at high temperatures. The investigation encompasses a range of critical response measures, including the out-of-plane response of RAC walls under standard fire exposure and the overall stability of the walls during fire scenarios. The walls' out-of-plane and axial deflection and damage patterns were presented. The upper and lower bounds of performance were presented to examine the effect of material models’ variability on the response. The findings of this study reveal the complex interaction between fire scenarios, material properties, and their effect on the structural behavior of RAC walls. This study contributes to the growing knowledge on using RAC in structural engineering applications and promoting environmentally friendly materials in the construction industry while ensuring structural safety.

Microstructural characteristics and properties of wire arc additive manufactured 304L austenitic stainless steel cylindrical components by different arc welding processes

Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is an advanced additive manufacturing (AM) technology that offers low cost and high deposition rates, making it suitable for building large metal parts for structural engineering applications. However, various welding procedures result in differing heat inputs and repetitive heating treatments throughout the deposition process, which can affect the microstructural and mechanical characteristics of the parts. In the current study, cylindrical parts made of 304L austenitic stainless steel (ASS) were manufactured using the WAAM technique, employing both gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and cold metal transfer (CMT) processes. This study explores the correlation between WAAM techniques and their effects on the bead geometry, microstructure and mechanical properties. The microstructure of the cylinders consisted of vertically growing austenite dendrites with residual ferrite (δ) within the austenite (γ) matrix. Compared to the bottom region (region ①), the top region (region ②) contained more residual ferrite. Although the microstructural characteristics from region ① to region ② are similar, they exhibit different ferrite morphologies. The rapid cooling rate in the CMT-AM process resulted in finer structures and a greater presence of ferrite phases in both regions compared to the GMAW-AM method. Cylinders produced by the CMT process displayed nearly uniform properties across both regions and demonstrated superior tensile properties, hardness, and impact toughness relative to those made using the GMAW technique. The WAAM 304L ASS cylinders also showed enhanced performance compared to stainless steel manufactured using traditional industrial forging standards, indicating that WAAM-processed 304L ASS cylinders are suitable for industrial applications.

Effect of Horizontal Distance of Web Opening on the Ultimate Load Carrying Capacity of Castellated Steel Beams by an Analytical Approach

Objectives: The primary objective of this current research is to determine the ideal horizontal spacing for hexagonal web openings and their maximum load-bearing capacity through Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Methods: The ISMB150 was implemented as a cross-sectional profile to fabricate distinct models of castellated beams with heights of 225 mm. The height of the web openings remained constant at 150 mm for the castellated beam model. The entire analysis is being done on ANSYS 19.2. Findings: The analysis has revealed that, for castellated beams with shallower depths, an optimal horizontal spacing of 44.9 mm for the web openings yields an ultimate load-bearing capacity of 144.26 KN. The results of castellated beams are measured in terms of ultimate load-carrying capacity, span-to-deflection ratio, load density, failure location, span-to-beam depth ratio, and the ratio of horizontal distance of opening-to-opening depth. Novelty: This research contributes analytical findings for the ideal horizontal distance of hexagonal web opening through maximum load-bearing capacity. Effects of off‐axis load direction on tensile properties of pultruded fiber‐reinforced polymer bolted joints with multi‐directional fiber lay‐ups

AbstractThe limited joint performance of unidirectional (UD) pultruded fiber‐reinforced polymer (FRP) composites poses a critical issue that constrains their application in structural engineering. Moreover, UD pultruded FRP joints display a notable reduction in strength and stiffness as the load angle diverges from the fiber pultrusion direction. This paper presents a numerical study of bolted pultruded FRP joints with different off‐axis loading directions. Two types of fiber lay‐ups, including UD and multi‐directional (MD), were investigated. Static tensile tests were conducted with the loading direction parallel to the pultrusion. A finite element model was validated by the test results. Studied geometric parameters includes the end‐to‐diameter (e/d) ratio, width‐to‐diameter (w/d) ratio, and bolt arrangement. Compared to UD joints, MD joints exhibited significant advantages in strength and stiffness under off‐axis loading with an increasing of 78.3% at a loading angle of 90°. Compared to the end distance, plate width has a more significant impact on the off‐axis behaviors of MD joints, especially between 30° and 75°. Multi‐bolted joints were more susceptible to net‐tension failure than single‐bolted joints. Furthermore, classical laminate theory and Hashin failure criterion were employed to predict the resistance of single‐bolted FRP joints with different loading angles, achieving high accuracy.Highlights Under increased off‐axis loading angles, compared with unidirectional (UD) joints, multi‐directional (MD) joints display a less reduction in both strength and stiffness. At a 90° angle UD joints displayed only 21.7% of the joint resistance of MD joints. Compared to the end distance, plate width has a more significant impact on the off‐axis behaviors of MD joints, especially between 30° and 75°. Classical Laminate Theory, Hashin failure criterion were effectively utilized to predict the ultimate strength of pultruded joints under various tensile loading angles, yielding high accuracy. The error between theoretical and simulated values is within 20%.

Research on and Model Analysis of Flexural Mechanical Properties of Basic Magnesium Sulfate Cement Concrete Beams.

This study presents a comprehensive investigation into the mechanical properties of Basic Magnesium Sulfate Cement Concrete (BMSC) in comparison to Ordinary Portland Cement Concrete (OPC) within reinforced concrete components. The main objective is to evaluate BMSC's applicability for practical engineering purposes, with a focus on its with early high strength, improved toughness, and superior crack resistance compared to conventional concrete. Experimental procedures involved fabricating beam specimens using OPC concrete with a C40 strength grade, alongside BMSC beams with varying strength grades (C30, C40, and C50). These specimens underwent bending resistance tests to analyze crack patterns and mechanical characteristics. The findings reveal that BMSC beams demonstrate enhanced bending and tensile properties at equivalent strength grades compared to OPC beams. Particularly, cracking mainly occurred at the mid-span region of BMSC beams, characterized by narrower cracks, indicating superior crack resistance. However, it was noted that the toughness of BMSC beams decreases as the strength grade increases. The maximum mid-span deflection of the BMSC test beam was smaller than that of the OPC test beam, which was 3.8 mm and 2.6 mm, respectively. The maximum crack width of the OPC beam was 4.7 times that of the BMSC beam. To facilitate practical implementation, the study developed calculation models for estimating the crack bending distance and ultimate bending distance in BMSC beams, offering valuable tools for engineering design and optimization. Overall, this research provides significant insights into the mechanical behavior of BMSC, presenting potential advantages for structural engineering applications.

Micro-macro properties of stainless-clad bimetallic steel welded connections with different configurations

This paper aims to investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties of S31603 + Q355B stainless-clad (SC) bimetallic steel welded connections with different welding configurations. A comprehensive research approach was employed, including microstructure analysis, static tensile test, impact test, bending test, Vickers hardness distribution measurement, and analysis of welding economy and efficiency. Four types of welded connections were examined to understand their performance variations arising from different welding configurations. Based on the findings, a recommended welding configuration suitable for structural engineering applications was proposed. Research outcomes showed that the decarburization and carbon accumulation zones were observed at the fusion interface during the welding of dissimilar metals. It should be noted that martensite was formed in the substrate, or the base metal, due to diffusion of alloying elements, with a more pronounced effect observed with higher welding heat inputs. In order to minimize the fusion area of dissimilar metals, it is advisable to avoid using a single welding consumable made of stainless steel as the mechanical properties of the welded connection were not significantly influenced by the use of stainless steel welding consumables with higher Nickle (Ni) and Chromium (Cr) alloying content in the transition region. Consequently, the same welding consumable should be employed in the transition region to simplify the welding procedure and to enhance the welding efficiency.

Numerical Evaluation on Thermal Performance of 3D Printed Concrete Walls: The Effects of Lattice Type, Filament Width and Granular Filling Material

Three-dimensional concrete printing (3DCP) is of great interest to scientists and the construction industry to bring automation to structural engineering applications. However, studies on the thermal performance of three-dimensional printed concrete (3DPC) building envelopes are limited, despite their potential to provide a long-term solution to modern construction challenges. This work is a numerical study to examine the impact of infill geometry on 3DPC lattice envelope thermal performance. Three different lattice structures were modeled to have the same thickness and nearly equal contour lengths, voids, and insulation percentages. Additionally, the effects of filament width and the application of granular insulating materials (expanded polystyrene beads and loose-fill perlite) were also studied. Finally, the efficacy of insulation was established. Results show that void area affects the thermal performance of 3DPC envelopes under stagnant air conditions, while web length, filament width, and contact (intersection) area between the webs and face shells affect the thermal behavior when cavities are filled with insulating materials due to thermal bridging. The thermal efficiency of insulation, which shows the effective use of insulation, varies between 26 and 44%, due to thermal bridges.

The investigation and estimation of flexural strength in shear-critically designed RC beams considering the steel fiber content

Despite numerous studies investigating the effectiveness of steel fibers in RC members subjected to various loading conditions, the majority ignored the impact of the interaction between the tensile reinforcement ratio, compressive strength of fibrous concrete, and steel fiber dosage. This paper aimed to inspect and quantify the effects of hooked-end steel fiber dosage on the bending behavior of RC beams considering the interaction arising from various longitudinal reinforcement ratios. For this purpose, an extensive and hybrid investigation involving both experimental and numerical techniques was conducted. In the experimental part, an investigation was carried out to evaluate the contribution of a specific amount of fiber ratio and various aspect ratios to the behavior of large-scale RC beams having a shear-deficient design. Three beams with a 0.5% hooked-end steel fiber ratio and one without fibers but with a minimum amount of stirrups were produced, and three-point bending tests were conducted. All beams having fibers utilized full flexural strength as in the beam with stirrups. Once the experimental studies were completed, the numerical models were then developed and validated with those of experimental three-point bending tests using the non-linear finite element code VecTor2 to establish a basis for the comprehensive parametric study. The parametric study consisted of 33 analyses. Rebar and volumetric fiber ratios were selected to be variables, and the ratios adopted were within the typical range used in structural engineering applications. Based on the regression analysis a linear and a quadratic model were proposed for estimating the yield and peak strength depending on the steel fiber content. Finally, the obtained models were verified using work from the literature and found to be effective in forecasting the strength of shear-deficient RC beams with 0.8%, 1.0%, and 1.2% tensile reinforcement ratios and hooked end steel fibers (0.5 to 1.5%).

Elastic Buckling Behavior of Functionally Graded Material Thin Skew Plates with Circular Openings

This study investigates the elastic buckling behavior of Functionally Graded Material (FGM) thin skew plates featuring a circular opening. FGMs, known for their unique property gradients, have gained prominence in structural engineering due to their mechanical performance and durability. Including a circular opening introduces a critical geometric consideration, influencing the structural stability and load-carrying capacity of FGM plates. The study examines the effects of the skew angle, plate’s aspect ratio, opening position, and size on the critical buckling load, normalized buckling load, and various buckling failure modes through computer modeling and finite element analysis. The results offer valuable insights into the interplay between material heterogeneity, geometric configuration, and structural stability. For instance, the critical buckling load increases by 29%, 82%, and 194% with an increment in skew angle from 0° to 30°, 45°, and 60°, respectively. Moreover, as the opening shifts from the plate’s edge closer to the center, the critical buckling load decreases by 26%. The critical buckling load is also dependent on the power index, as an increase in the power index from 0.2 to 5 reduced the buckling load by 1698 kN. This research contributes to the advancement of our understanding of FGM thin plates’ behavior under skew loading conditions, with implications for the design and optimization of innovative structures. The findings presented provide a foundation for further exploration of advanced composite materials and their applications in structural engineering.

Data-driven estimates of the strength and failure modes of CFRP-steel bonded joints by implementing the CTGAN method

The bond strength between the CFRP and steel usually dominates the final strengthened effectiveness. However, the CFRP-steel bond strength is affected by various geometric and material properties and exhibits different failure modes, making accurate predictions challenging. This study utilises data-driven machine learning (ML) methods to predict the strength and failure modes of CFRP-steel joints. An experimental dataset consisting of 178 single-lap shear test results was first built, after which the Conditional Tabular Generative Adversarial Networks (CTGAN) method was applied to augment the limited available data. Four broadly used ML algorithms: Support Vector Machines (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbours (KNN), Decision Trees (DT) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) were applied. The ANN regression model achieved the best performance in predicting joint strength (Rtest2=0.95), while the SVM classification model achieved the best performance in predicting failure modes (accuracy ≥ 92.3 %). The SHapley Additive exPlanations analysis further revealed that the Young's modulus of the adhesive was most significant to the joint strength, while the tensile strength of the adhesive was most significant to the failure modes. The ultimately constructed ML models and the corresponding analyses presented can benefit practical structural engineering applications and provide insights into the optimal CFRP-steel joint design.

Prediction of the axial compression capacity of stub CFST columns using machine learning techniques.

Concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns have extensive applications in structural engineering due to their exceptional load-bearing capability and ductility. However, existing design code standards often yield different design capacities for the same column properties, introducing uncertainty for engineering designers. Moreover, conventional regression analysis fails to accurately predict the intricate relationship between column properties and compressive strength. To address these issues, this study proposes the use of two machine learning (ML) models-Gaussian process regression (GPR) and symbolic regression (SR). These models accept a variety of input variables, encompassing geometric and material properties of stub CFST columns, to estimate their strength. An experimental database of 1316 specimens was compiled from various research papers, including circular, rectangular, and double-skin stub CFST columns. In addition, a dimensionless output variable, referred to as the strength index, is introduced to enhance model performance. To validate the efficiency of the introduced models, predictions from these models are compared with those from two established standard codes and various ML algorithms, including support vector regression optimized with particle swarm optimization (PSVR), artificial neural networks, XGBoost (XGB), CatBoost (CATB), Random Forest, and LightGBM models. Through performance metrics, the CATB, GPR, PSVR and XGB models emerge as the most accurate and reliable models from the evaluation results. In addition, simple and practical design equations for the different types of CFST columns have been proposed based on the SR model. The developed ML models and proposed equations can predict the compressive strength of stub CFST columns with reliable and accurate results, making them valuable tools for structural engineering. Furthermore, the Shapley additive interpretation (SHAP) technique is employed for feature analysis. The results of the feature analysis reveal that section slenderness ratio and concrete strength parameters negatively impact the compressive strength index.

Utilization of Novel Basalt Fiber Pellets from Micro- to Macro-Scale, and from Basic to Applied Fields: A Review on Recent Contributions

Fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (FRCC) are one of the leading engineering materials in the 21st century, as they offer proficiency in enhancing strength, ductility, and durability in structural engineering applications. Because the recently developed basalt fiber pellets (BFP) offer combined strands of fibers encased in a polymer matrix, they are being prevalently studied to explore new possibilities when used in brittle materials such as mortar and concrete. Hence, this paper synthesizes the intensive research efforts and contributions to this novel class of fibers conducted by the authors. Specifically, it reviews the fresh, mechanical, and durability properties of FRCC incorporating single BFP or hybrid with polyvinyl alcohol fibers and modified with slag/fly ash and nano-materials and its suitability for different field applications. In addition, the nano- and meso-scale modeling of such matrices are described. BFP significantly contributes to improving post-cracking flexural behavior by toughening the cementitious matrix and minimizing strength losses when exposed to harsh environments. All results show promising progress in the development of high-performance FRCC comprising BFP, with potential success for structural and pavement applications.

Nanoscale Magnets Embedded in a Microstrip.

Nanoscale magnetic resonance imaging (NanoMRI) is an active area of applied research with potential applications in structural biology and quantum engineering. The success of this technological vision hinges on improving the instrument's sensitivity and functionality. A particular challenge is the optimization of the magnetic field gradient required for spatial encoding and of the radio frequency field used for spin control, in analogy to the components used in clinical MRI. In this work, we present the fabrication and characterization of a magnet-in-microstrip device that yields a compact form factor for both elements. We find that our design leads to a number of advantages, among them a 4-fold increase of the magnetic field gradient compared to those achieved with traditional fabrication methods. Our results can be useful for boosting the efficiency of a variety of different experimental arrangements and detection principles in the field of NanoMRI.
