Giant and nonreciprocal photonic spin Hall effect in asymmetric multilayered structure with bulk Dirac semimetal

The nonreciprocal photonic spin Hall effect features the different reflected or transmitted spin shifts along two opposite incident wave propagating directions. However, previous investigations have always focused on the features of the photonic spin Hall effect along one incident wave propagating direction. How to achieve the nonreciprocal photonic spin Hall effect remains obscure. Here, we theoretically study the nonreciprocal photonic spin Hall effect in the asymmetric multilayered structure containing the Bulk Dirac Semimetal and other dielectric materials. It is found that under the horizontal polarization the maximum reflected spin shift value along one direction is up to around −14.4 times of the incident wavelength at 70.88°, but it is only 0.46 times of the incident wavelength at 73.2° along the other direction, which reflects the nonreciprocity of photonic spin Hall effect and thus can act as the photonic spin Hall diode. Such a sizeable directional difference between the reflected spin shifts along these two opposite directions originates from the fact that this structure loses its mirror symmetry and becomes an asymmetrical one, and the obvious difference in the values of the reflected spin shifts along the two directions can be attributed to the large difference in the values of ∣rs/rp∣. At the same time, we find that the Fermi energy of the Bulk Dirac Semimetal can effectively tune the spin shift along the backward direction, as well as the difference between the spin shifts for two different propagating directions, which causes the controllable nonreciprocal photonic spin Hall effect. Our results establish the alternative configuration for realizing the nonreciprocal photonic spin Hall effect, which facilitates the potential applications in the spin photonic devices.

Realization of all-optical hybrid photonic diode and all-optical modulation through spatial self-phase modulation utilizing solution-processed chalcogenide glass as nonlinear optical materials

This study represents the first investigation into the nonlinear optical response of Ge25Sb5Se70 chalcogenide glass colloid using the spatial self-phase modulation technique with a 403 nm laser beam. Spatial self-phase modulation patterns were recorded within the glass colloid at different input powers, and the optical parameters were measured. Furthermore, the study demonstrates the first-ever realization of an all-optical chalcogenide glass/titanium oxide hybrid photonic diode through the unidirectional excitation of spatial self-phase modulation patterns. All-optical modulation in chalcogenide glass colloids through spatial self-phase modulation employing multiple wavelengths (403 nm and 632.8 nm) was also demonstrated. These findings suggest promising applications of chalcogenide glass-based photonic devices in nonlinear optics, particularly in areas such as all-optical switching and signal processing.

Synthesis and Characterization of New Chiral Smectic Four-Ring Esters.

Orthoconic antiferroelectric liquid crystals (OAFLCs) represent unique self-organized materials with significant potential for applications in photonic devices due to their sub-microsecond switching times and high optical contrast in electro-optical effects. However, almost all known OALFCs suffer from low chemical stability and short helical pitch values. This paper presents the synthesis and study results of two chiral AFLCs, featuring a four-ring structure in the rigid core and high chemical stability. The mesomorphic properties of these compounds were investigated using polarizing optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Spectrometry and electro-optical studies were employed to estimate the helical pitch, tilt angle, and spontaneous polarization of the synthesized compounds and the prepared mixtures. All studied compounds exhibit enantiotropic chiral smectic mesophases including the SmA*, the SmC*, and a very broad temperature range of the SmCA* phase. Doping top-modern antiferroelectric mixture with synthesized compounds offers benefits such as increased helical pitch and tilt angle values without significantly influencing spontaneous polarization. This allows the prepared mixture to be regarded as an OAFLC with high optical contrast, characterized by an almost perfect dark state. These valuable physicochemical and optical properties suggest significant potential of studied materials for practical applications.

Dynamic Dipole Moment of Luminescent Liquid Crystals Enabled Highly Efficient Active Waveguide Materials Design and Synthesis

AbstractOrganic optical waveguide materials have attracted considerable attention for their promising applications in photonic and optoelectronic devices. However, for most materials, excellent light‐loss properties at high temperature cannot be obtained due to many factors. Consequently, realizing efficient optical waveguide materials that perform well at elevated temperatures remains a significant challenge. In this study, relying on the luminescent properties and self‐assembly properties of luminescent liquid crystals (LLCs), successfully fabricated materials are present for highly efficient active optical waveguides. A systematically synthesized set of LLCs with different structures is named according to the substituent type and the position of the cyano group, namely α‐DECN, α‐DEEOCN, β‐DECN, and β‐DEEOCN. Notably, α‐DECN and β‐DECN reveal hexagonal columnar phase, while α‐DEEOCN and β‐DEEOCN exhibit smectic phase. Optical waveguide experiments have revealed that the obtained LLCs showed highly efficient optical waveguide behavior, where the lowest light loss reached 0.15 dB mm−1 at room temperature. Remarkably, these LLCs show even lower light loss at high temperatures, with the light loss reaching 0.11 dB mm−1 as the lowest point. Further experimental results indicate that this phenomenon is attributed to the change in the dipole moment of these molecules. This research forms a significant groundwork for advanced exploration in optical waveguide material.

Strong nonlinear optical processes with extraordinary polarization anisotropy in inversion-symmetry broken two-dimensional PdPSe

Nonlinear optical activities, especially second harmonic generation (SHG), are key phenomena in inversion-symmetry-broken two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). On the other hand, anisotropic nonlinear optical processes are important for unique applications in nano-nonlinear photonic devices with polarization functions, having become one of focused research topics in the field of nonlinear photonics. However, the strong nonlinearity and strong optical anisotropy do not exist simultaneously in common 2D materials. Here, we demonstrate strong second-order and third-order susceptibilities of 64 pm/V and 6.2×10−19 m2/V2, respectively, in the even-layer PdPSe, which has not been discovered in other common TMDCs (e.g., MoS2). Strikingly, it also simultaneously exhibited strong SHG anisotropy with an anisotropic ratio of ~45, which is the largest reported among all 2D materials to date, to the best of our knowledge. In addition, the SHG anisotropy ratio can be harnessed from 0.12 to 45 (375 times) by varying the excitation wavelength due to the dispersion of χ(2)\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$${\\chi }^{(2)}$$\\end{document} values. As an illustrative example, we further demonstrate polarized SHG imaging for potential applications in crystal orientation identification and polarization-dependent spatial encoding. These findings in 2D PdPSe are promising for nonlinear nanophotonic and optoelectronic applications.

Three-State Dielectric Switching within a Narrow Temperature Range in Isopropylammonium Lead Iodide, a One-Dimensional Perovskite with Polar Phase.

The phenomenon of dielectric switching has garnered considerable attention due to its potential applications in electronic and photonic devices. Typically, hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites, HOIPs, exhibit a binary (low-high) dielectric state transition, which, while useful, represents only the tip of the iceberg in terms of functional relevance. One way to boost the versatility of applications is the discovery of materials capable of nonbinary switching schemes, such as three-state dielectric switching. The ideal candidate for that task would exhibit a trio of attributes: two reversible, first-order phase transitions across three distinct crystal phases, minimal thermal hysteresis, and pronounced, step-like variations in dielectric permittivity, with a substantial change in its real part. Here, we demonstrate a one-dimensional lead halide perovskite with the formula (CH3)2C(H)NH3)PbI3, abbreviated as ISOPrPbI3, that fulfills these criteria and demonstrates three-state dielectric switching within a narrow temperature range of ca. 45 K. Studies on ISOPrPbI3 also revealed the polar nature of the low-temperature phase III below 266 K through pyrocurrent experiments, and the noncentrosymmetric character of the intermediate phase II and low-temperature phase III is confirmed via second harmonic generation measurements. Additionally, luminescence studies of ISOPrPbI3 have demonstrated combined broadband and narrow emission properties. The introduction of ISOPrPbI3 as a three-state dielectric switch not only addresses the limitations posed by the wide thermal gap between dielectric states in previous materials but also opens new avenues for the development of nonbinary dielectric switchable materials.

Literature Review on Conjugated Polymers as Light-Sensitive Materials for Photovoltaic and Light-Emitting Devices in Photonic Biomaterial Applications

Due to their extended p-orbital delocalization, conjugated polymers absorb light in the range of visible–NIR frequencies. We attempt to exploit this property to create materials that compete with inorganic semiconductors in photovoltaic and light-emitting materials. Beyond competing for applications in photonic devices, organic conjugated compounds, polymers, and small molecules have also been extended to biomedical applications like phototherapy and biodetection. Recent research on conjugated polymers has focused on bioapplications based on the absorbed light energy conversions in electric impulses, chemical energy, heat, and light emission. In this review, we describe the working principles of those photonic devices that have been applied and researched in the field of biomaterials.

Fundamentals and emerging optical applications of hexagonal boron nitride: a tutorial

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), also known as white graphite, is a transparent layered crystal with a wide bandgap. Its crystal structure resembles graphite, featuring layers composed of honeycomb lattices held together through van der Waals forces. The layered crystal structure of hBN facilitates exfoliation into thinner flakes and makes it highly anisotropic in in-plane and out-of-plane directions. Unlike graphite, hBN is both insulating and transparent, making it an ideal material for isolating devices from the environment and acting as a waveguide. As a result, hBN has found extensive applications in optical devices, electronic devices, and quantum photonic devices. This comprehensive tutorial aims to provide readers with a thorough understanding of hBN, covering its synthesis, lattice and spectroscopic characterization, and various applications in optoelectronic and quantum photonic devices. This tutorial is designed for both readers without prior experience in hBN and those with expertise in specific fields seeking to understand its relevance and connections to others.

Luminescence and two-photon absorption assisted optical limiting properties of Ag-doped CdWO4 nanorods

The emerging demand for the fabrication of nonlinear optical materials with high limits of optical power is obvious in nonlinear optics due to their wide application in photonic devices. We report the linear and third-order nonlinear optical properties of Ag-doped CdWO4 nanorods and their dependence on Ag-doping concentration. CdWO4 nanorods with different Ag concentrations were synthesized by the chemical precipitation method and characterized by UV–Vis absorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, Photoluminescence and its lifetime studies, X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The introduction of Ag ions has led to an increased redshift in the CdWO4 absorption spectra extended into longer wavelength bands, thus enhancing optical absorption within the visible range. The XRD pattern showed that the nanorods crystallized in a monoclinic wolframite structure. The incorporation of Ag in CdWO4 decreases the luminescence emission intensity due to surface quenching effect. Luminescence lifetime measurement reveals the longer decay lifetime for Ag-doped CdWO4 nanorods due to the reduction of density of defects and deep trap state. The nonlinear optical behaviour of the nanorods was investigated by an Open aperture Z-scan technique at 532 nm using pulsed wave Nd: YAG laser. Experimental results showed that reverse saturable absorption is responsible for the observed nonlinearity in the nanorods. The addition of Ag can significantly improve the nonlinear absorption coefficient and optical limiting effects of CdWO4 which can be used as a potential material in nonlinear optical devices.

Symmetry-Reduction Enhanced Polarization-Sensitive Photoresponse Based on One-Dimensional van der Waals Materials.

Designing high-performance polarization-sensitive photodetectors is essential for photonic device applications. Anisotropic one-dimensional (1D) van der Waals (vdW) materials have provided a promising platform to that end. Despite significant advances in 1D vdW photonic devices, their performance is still far from delivering practical potential. Herein, we propose the design of high-performance polarization-sensitive photodetectors using unique 1D vdW materials. By leveraging the chemical vapor transport technique, we successfully fabricate high-quality 1D vdW Nb2Pd1-xSe5 (x = 0.29) nanowires. The 1D vdW Nb2Pd1-xSe5 photodetector exhibits a high mobility of ∼56 cm2/(V s) and superior photoresponse performance, including a high responsivity of 1A/W and an ultrafast response time of ∼8 μs under 638 nm illumination. Moreover, the 1D vdW Nb2Pd1-xSe5 photodetector demonstrates excellent polarization-sensitive photoresponse with a degree of linear polarization (DOLP) up to 0.85 and can be modulated by adjusting the gate voltage, laser power density, and wavelength. Those exceptional performance are believed to be relevant to the symmetry-reduction induced by the partial occupation of Pd sites. This study offers feasible approaches to enhance the anisotropy of 1D vdW materials and the modulation of their polarization-sensitive photoresponse, which may provide deep insights into the physical origin of anisotropic properties of 1D vdW materials.

Experimental and DFT investigations of Al-doped ZnO nanostructured thin films

Al doped ZnO thin films at different concentrations have been successfully synthesized, characterized experimentally, and investigated theoretically by density functional theory (DFT). The crystal structure analysis was carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD) data. Wurtzite structures of a single phase with a preferred orientation along the (002) plane are obtained. The surface morphology has been investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) which showed homogeneous and compact surfaces with spherical shape grains that change to a wave like nematic structure with increasing Al doping rate. For a complete characterization, experimental and theoretical analysis of optical and electrical properties have been done using UV–Vis spectrophotometry, the four-probe method, electronic band structure and density of states calculations, and the Boltz-Trap code based on the semi classical theory of Boltzmann. Both, experimental and theoretical, studies indicate an increase in gap energy with high transparency in the visible region and electrical conductivity improvement due to a non-localized state around the Fermi level. The experimental and theoretical studies agree well and show a similar tendency of the results. Therefore, these properties of Al-doped ZnO open a new avenue for optoelectronic and photonic device applications.

Morphological, and Optical Properties of BaTiO3 Nano Particles

Barium titanate (BaTiO3) nano particles have garnered significant attention due to their unique structural, morphological and optical properties, which hold promise for various technological applications. This study presents a comprehensive investigation in to the synthesis potential of BaTiO3 nano particle. The synthesis of BaTiO3 nano particles was achived through various methods, including sol-gel, hydrothermal, and solvothermal routes, with meticulous control over parameters such as temperature, pH, and precursor concentration to tailor the nano particle size and morphology. The structural characterization using techniques such as x-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the formation of pure –phase BaTiO3nanoparticles with crystallite sizes in the nanometer range, exhibiting a perovskite strucure. Morphological analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) elucidated the morphology, size distribution, and surface chacteristics of the nano particles. The results showcased well –defined, uniform nano particles with controllable sizes and shapes, ranging from spherical to cubic, depending onthe synthesis conditions. futher more, the optical properties ofBaTiO3 nanoparticles were investigated using UV-visible spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The UV- visible spectra exhibited characteristic absorption peaks corresponding to the electronic transitions within the band structure of BaTio3,while photoluminescence spectra revealed emission peaks indicative of defect states with in the nanoparticle. These optical properties were found to be tunable by varying the nano particle size, morphology, and surface characteristics, offering opportunities for optoelectronic and photonic device applications. The key findings of this study underscore the importance of understanding the interplay between synthesis parameters and resulting structural, morphological, and optical properties of BaTiO3 nanoparticles.

Computational design and experimental investigation of novel thiophene-based organic dyes with N,N-dimethylaminophenyl and morpholinophenyl donors for dye-sensitized solar cells

A new series of thiophene-based organic chromophores (4–7 a, b) has been developed through structural engineering of the electron donor (D) group, incorporating N,N-dimethylaminophenyl and morpholinophenyl, and acceptor moieties such as benzonitrile and flurobenzonitrile. Additionally, a π-linkage of phenylthiophene was inserted. The effects of various donating and accepting groups, as well as the spacer, on the geometrical, energetic, absorption, and photovoltaic properties of these sensitizers were investigated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Time-Dependent DFT. The sensitizers were optimized in their ground state using selected functional methods. Furthermore, key properties such as absorbance, frequency, energies of Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO) and Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (LUMO), energy gap, dipole moment, and global reactivity descriptors were calculated using quantum chemical calculations. These spectral properties and quantum chemical calculations provide valuable insights into the potential use of these sensitizers in photonic devices. The results obtained from analyzing light harvesting efficiency (LHE), free energy injection (ΔGinj), and open circuit voltage (Voc) demonstrate that these dyes show promising characteristics for future experimental studies and offer guidelines for improving the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells. By employing structural modifications and investigating the electronic properties of these newly developed chromophores, this study contributes to the understanding of their behavior and potential applications in photonic devices. The findings provide a foundation for further experimental investigations and offer valuable insights for the development of more efficient dye-sensitized solar cells.

Formation of Highly Tunable Periodic Plasmonic Structures on Gold Films Using Direct Laser Writing

AbstractDirect laser writing method is a promising technique for the large‐scale and cost‐effective fabrication of periodic nanostructure arrays exciting hybrid lattice plasmons. This type of electromagnetic mode manifests a narrow and deep resonance peak with a high dispersion whose precise controllability is crucial for practical applications in photonic devices. Here, the formation of differently shaped gold nanostructures using the direct laser writing method on Au layers of different thicknesses is presented. The resonance peak is demonstrated to be highly dependent on the shape of the structures in the array, thus its position in the spectra, as well as the quality, can be additionally modulated by changing the morphology. The shape of the structure and the resonance itself pertain not only on the laser pulse energy but also on the grating period. This overlapping effect occurring at distances smaller than the diameter of the focused laser beam is studied in detail. By taking advantage of the highly controllable plasmonic resonance, the fabricated gratings open up new opportunities for applications in sensing.

Structure-property connections in dual-phase multifunctional barium titanate based nanocomposites: Insights from charge density distributions

This article presents a comprehensive investigation of dual-phase nano (BaTiO3) - (ZnFe2O4) ceramic composites prepared via a physical mixing route. The qualitative charge density analysis was conducted using Fullprof refinement data, and the results were visualized in 2D and 3D using VESTA software. The atomic bonding of the composite was examined through charge density analysis, focusing on the 1D electron density profile. This analysis was compared with the molecular elastic parameters obtained from previous research using FTIR data on the same composite. The optical properties of the composite were characterized to determine optical conductivity, refractive index, Urbach energy, surface optical effect (SELF, VELF), and optical dielectric constants. The P-E hysteresis loop analysis is conducted to understand the deviations from the expected ferroelectric loop, indicating the presence of lossy capacitance due to field discharge by the conductive ferrite phase, underscoring the dynamic nature of the material's electrical properties. Comprehensive magnetic characterization revealed soft ferromagnetic behavior with intricate magnetic interactions. Correlations between observed physical properties were explored to gain insights into the theoretical changes in charge density, which are responsible for the optical behavior of the composite. The unique approach employed in this study provides valuable information on the charge density distribution and atomic bonding of the composites, highlighting their potential applications in magneto-electric and photonic devices.

High-κ Wide-Gap Layered Dielectric for Two-Dimensional van der Waals Heterostructures.

van der Waals heterostructures of two-dimensional materials have unveiled frontiers in condensed matter physics, unlocking unexplored possibilities in electronic and photonic device applications. However, the investigation of wide-gap, high-κ layered dielectrics for devices based on van der Waals structures has been relatively limited. In this work, we demonstrate an easily reproducible synthesis method for the rare-earth oxyhalide LaOBr, and we exfoliate it as a 2D layered material with a measured static dielectric constant of 9 and a wide bandgap of 5.3 eV. Furthermore, our research demonstrates that LaOBr can be used as a high-κ dielectric in van der Waals field-effect transistors with high performance and low interface defect concentrations. Additionally, it proves to be an attractive choice for electrical gating in excitonic devices based on 2D materials. Our work demonstrates the versatile realization and functionality of 2D systems with wide-gap and high-κ van der Waals dielectric environments.

The influence of laser-annealing pulse width on optical transparency and carrier dynamics of ITO thin films

Indium tin oxide (ITO) has important application in photoelectronic and photonic devices, demanding effective approach and appropriate parameters to modulate the ITO properties. The effects of laser annealing at 1064 nm with different pulse width (875 ps, 10 ns, and 300 ns) on optical and nonlinear optical properties of ITO films were investigated. Compared with 875 ps and 10 ns, laser annealing at 300 ns significantly improved the near-infrared transmittance of ITO films. The change arises from the elimination of oxygen vacancies and reduction of tin oxides, resulting in the decrease of carrier concentration. Finite element simulations indicate that laser annealing with pulse width of 875 ps and 10 ns have high instantaneous peak temperatures of 1128.5 K and 783 K, respectively, while the temperature accumulation between pulses is negligible. On the contrary, the laser annealing with a pulse width of 300 nshas lower peak transient temperature of 343 K but high static residence temperature of 973 K. The results reveal that the modification of ITO films depends more on the static average temperature rather than the instantaneous peak temperature. The modulation of carrier dynamics in both amplitude and temporal domain was demonstrated after 300 ns laser annealing, achieving ultrafast transient response approximately 150 fs. This work provides theoretical and experimental basis for us to select suitable laser conditions for directional annealing of ITO film to make it suitable for the applications of broad optical spectrum photovoltaic devices or ultrafast optical exchange for high-speed data processing.

Multiple hyperbolic waves.

This study presents a conceptual design for a hyperbolic material utilizing transformation optics. This material is designed to produce multiple hyperbolic wave fields or polaritons excited by a point source. The design dictates key parameters including branch number, propagation range, and overall propagation direction of deflection. Through this approach, the hyperbolic material demonstrates new effects compared to traditional hyperbolic materials. These advancements offer possibilities for the design and applications of photonic devices in other degrees of freedom.

Dynamically reconfigurable complex liquid crystal emulsions

ABSTRACT Complex emulsions, containing liquid crystals (LCs) and immiscible oils such as fluorocarbon or silicone oils, present innovative functionalities in soft materials. These emulsions exhibit dynamic reconfiguration in droplet morphology and internal LC organisation, expanding applications in optics, sensing, and active matter. This review highlights the evolution and potential of LC-containing complex emulsions. Emphasis is placed on emulsions featuring dynamic and reversible morphological transformations and LC reorganisation, underpinning their suitability for tunable micro-lenses, chemical sensing, and biosensing. Nematic LCs within complex emulsions allow for topological defect-driven functionalization, attaching antibodies to induce substantial changes in the LC director field upon interfacial recognition events. This feature may facilitate the development of ultrasensitive chemical and biological sensors. Moreover, cholesteric LCs, through their selective reflection, enable the rapid and sensitive detection of foodborne pathogens. The controlled assembly of magnetic nanoparticles at interfaces illustrates advancements towards magnetic field-responsive and active colloids. Future perspectives include exploiting these properties for intelligent colloidal systems capable of autonomous behaviour, and furthering applications in dynamic photonic devices, high-security identification tags, and responsive lens systems.

Silver molybdate: an excellent optical limiting material under nanoregime for photonic device application

There is a mounting demand for nonlinear optical materials with superior optical limiting performance which has a noticeable impact on protecting the delicate optical components from laser-induced damage. Transition metal molybdates have garnered attention in the nonlinear optics field due to their outstanding optical and luminescent properties, which give rise to widespread applications in next-generation optoelectronics devices. The structural confirmation of the as prepared silver molybdate nanoparticles were made by XRD and Raman spectroscopy analysis. The linear optical properties and the band gap of the synthesized material were studied using UV–Visible and photoluminescence spectroscopy. SEM analysis revealed the pebble like morphology of the silver molybdate nanostructures. The nonlinear responses of the samples were studied using open aperture z-scan approach with Nd:YAG pulsed laser (532 nm, 9 ns, 10 Hz). The sample exhibits reverse saturable absorption pattern attributed to the two photon absorption (2PA) mechanism. The obtained OL threshold value is in the order of 1012 which is suitable for fabricating optical limiters in nano second pulsed laser regime.
