Organisational cyber resilience: a heuristic for bridging foundations and applications

PurposeThe drive for digitalisation has increased the scope of cyber threats which can exploit the growing footprint of information and communication technology infrastructure supporting modern societies. Despite substantial interest and efforts in researching and building organisational cyber resilience, the resulting body of work is heterogeneous and has yet to reach maturity. This paper aims to address the gap in the conceptualisation of cyber resilience in academic and practice-oriented grey literature.Design/methodology/approachIn this conceptual paper, we firstly seek to explore the available foundations of resilience as a construct and consider how these can be applied to organisational cybersecurity. To that aim, this study employs a targeted literature review approach, incorporating systematic elements to ensure rigour. Literature was identified through comprehensive searches in key academic databases, reference chaining and expert recommendations. Articles were selected based on relevance and contribution to the field, resulting in a thematic analysis to identify gaps and propose a heuristic model for cyber resilience. With this approach, we aim to position the emerging view of cyber resilience relative to risk analysis, while highlighting its domain of “conceptual comparative advantage” – the types of applications it is best suited to address. Finally, a high-level heuristic model for cyber resilience is proposed, which functions across the relevant policy, strategy and operational dimensions while also considering its relationship with cyber risk management.FindingsA conceptual model for organisational cyber resilience is proposed which helps position and frame research contributions in this domain relative to risk analysis, highlighting its domain of comparative advantage. The model integrates policy, strategy and operational dimensions, in a manner conducive to bridging foundations and applications of the concept of cyber risk management. The proposed model provides a critical point of reference to evaluate individual models, frameworks and tools.Originality/valueThis paper is a pioneering effort to overcome the current gaps between conceptual and practical views of cyber resilience. It proposes a new, risk-aligned view of the concept of cyber resilience and provides a structural foundation for further research and practice in the field.

AI optimization and mathematical simulation validated by nondestructive testing for resonance frequency in advanced composite structures for bridge applications

This paper presents a novel approach integrating artificial intelligence (AI) optimization and mathematical simulation to predict the resonance frequency of nanoclay-reinforced concrete cylindrical shell structures intended for bridge applications. These composite structures, known for their enhanced mechanical properties, require precise evaluation of their vibrational behavior to ensure structural stability and longevity. Traditional methods for predicting resonance frequencies are often time-consuming and prone to inaccuracies, especially in complex materials like nanoclay composites. To address this, an AI-based optimization algorithm was developed, incorporating Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and a mathematical modeling to simulate resonance characteristics under varying material and geometric parameters. The mathematical modeling is validated using nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques, such as modal analysis, which provided real-world resonance data without damaging the structure. The nondestructive testing results is compared against the mathematical model to ensure accuracy and reliability. The integration of nanoclay into the concrete matrix significantly altered the vibrational properties, enhancing the stiffness and reducing damping losses, which is crucial for bridge applications where dynamic loads are prevalent. The optimized model not only predicted resonance frequencies with high accuracy but also demonstrated its potential for large-scale bridge infrastructure. This methodology offers a streamlined and robust tool for engineers, reducing the need for physical prototyping and providing enhanced design capabilities. Future research will focus on expanding the model to incorporate additional material behaviors and load conditions, furthering its application in civil engineering.

Parametric modeling and engineering application of the high-speed continuous beam bridge based on Building Information Modeling.

To improve the informatization and intelligence level of high-speed railway (HSR) bridge construction, a parametric modeling method for continuous beam bridges based on Building Information Modeling (BIM) is proposed in this study. By this method, the parametric families of continuous beam components and key construction machinery are established, and the rapid modeling of overall continuous beam bridge and the simulation of critical construction process are realized as well. Taking the Caoxian-Shangqiu bridge of Xiong'an-Shangqiu HSR as a case study, the parametric modeling method is applied to conduct the engineering application on the prestressed duct layout and rebar clash detection. The results indicate that the modeling efficiencies of HSR continuous beam bridge and construction machinery are significantly increased by the established parametric modeling method. Based on the BIM model of continuous beam bridge, the improvement in the precision of prestressed duct layout and the elimination of rebar clash points can be achieved. The research achievement can guide the visualization of construction disclosure, enhance construction efficiency, and provide reference and technical support for the construction management and control of HSR continuous beam bridges.

Pencil drawn meter bridge

Abstract This study investigates the application of a Wheatstone bridge, specifically through the utilization of a meter bridge constructed on chart paper using pencil graphite. Employing the Wheatstone bridge principle, this study aims to achieve precise measurements of an unknown resistance. Results indicate an error margin between measured and calculated values of less than 10%, highlighting the efficiency and accuracy of this approach. The demonstrated effectiveness of the meter bridge serves as an educational resource, particularly beneficial for K-12 students, providing practical understanding and hands-on experience with the meter bridge concept. This research contributes to enhancing STEAM education by offering a tangible and accessible tool for teaching electrical circuit principles.

Experimental investigations on the flexural behavior of UHPC wet joints for UHPC light-weight rigid frame arch bridges

Wet joints are critical parts of prefabricated ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) light-weight rigid frame arch bridges (LWRFAGs), so their mechanical behavior is important to the structural design and applications of these arch bridges. To explore suitable joint configurations and reinforcement arrangements for connecting UHPC components or arch ribs of a practical UHPC LWRFAG, this paper experimentally investigated flexural behavior of several prefabricated UHPC joint beams with various kinds of wet joints through four-point bending tests. Firstly, four different UHPC joint beams with different joint configurations were designed, including (i) vertical joint; (ii) rhombus joint; (iii) vertical joint with top and bottom strips; and (iv) rhombus joint with top and bottom strips, and their flexural performance were compared with a complete UHPC beam. The experimental results revealed that UHPC joint beam employing the rhombus joint with top and bottom strips exhibited superior flexural behavior and cracking resistance among four UHPC joint beams. Subsequently, to achieve optimal and robust joint configurations, bending performance of one complete UHPC beam and three large-scale UHPC joint beams with rhombus joints but different reinforcement arrangements were experimentally studied. It is observed that the beam with the welded twist reinforcements (specimen V-4) shown optimal flexural performance and cracking resistance. Finally, to explore the load transfer mechanism and effects of reinforcement parameters on flexural behavior of specimen V-4, the parametric studies were comprehensively performed using finite element analyses (FEA). This study could serve as both the experimental and theoretical reference for flexural design of UHPC beams with the rhombus wet joints.

Optimization of IPOP-connected dissimilar power-rated converters: An equal incremental cost-based approach

As electric vehicles gain prominence, optimizing the efficiency of charging stations has become a critical issue. This paper explores the application of dual active bridge (DAB) converters arranged in an input-parallel-output-parallel (IPOP) configuration, offering a flexible solution for power conversion across varied power-rated loads. While previous research mainly focused on optimizing single DABs and establishing the system using identical converters, this study leverages dissimilar modules, enhancing flexibility and operational efficiency. We introduce a novel IPOP system incorporating diverse modules and corresponding switch regulators. Additionally, an efficiency optimization strategy featuring dynamic load allocation is proposed. Herein, each module or each group of modules is responsible for its corresponding power range. Based on curve-fitted power profiles, an equal incremental cost-based method is employed to formulate the path of power allocation. Moreover, a simulated annealing algorithm determines the optimal power output strategy to accommodate dynamic power flow requirements. Experimental comparisons with the conventional equal-power sharing scheme underscore the proposed method’s effectiveness and superiority.

A preliminary investigation of the inverse Finite Element Method applied to bridge structures

Deflection monitoring plays a key role in bridge Structural Health Monitoring, as deflection data may offer valuable insights into potential structural issues, such as cracks and corrosion. However, monitoring bridge deflections under operative loads presents challenges, particularly in scenarios where establishing a fixed reference point for displacement sensors is impractical, such as when a bridge spans a waterway or the sensors may be vulnerable to vandalism. In recent years, the inverse Finite Element Method (iFEM) has emerged as a possible solution. This method provides a load- and material-independent means of computing structural displacements from strain measurements, in real time at a minimal computational cost. Additionally, the iFEM can serve as a virtual sensing approach to monitor strains at locations lacking sensors, enabling the assessment of the fatigue life consumption at virtually any point in the structure. Despite its potential, applications of the iFEM in the civil engineering field are very limited, with no validation on full scale bridges has been performed to date. This study addresses this gap by investingating the application of the iFEM for bridge deflection monitoring through distributed strain measurements. The proposed approach is tested on experimental case studies, involving cross-validatiion of reference-free deflections inferred by the iFEM with those obtained from displacement sensors. This work contributes to the advancements of structural health monitoring methodologies in civil engineering, demonstrating the practicality and reliability of iFEM in bridge applications.

Research Progress on Shear Characteristics and Rapid Post-Disaster Construction of Narrow-Width Steel Box–UHPC Composite Beams

The narrow-width steel box girder is an important type of steel–concrete composite bridge structure, which is usually composed of reinforced concrete wing plates, narrow steel boxes partially injected with concrete, and shear connectors that promote shear force transfer. The utilization of narrow-width steel box girders, augmented by partially filled concrete, embodies the synthesis of steel and concrete elements, fostering structural efficiency. Moreover, its attributes, including reduced structural weight, diminished vertical profile, enhanced load-bearing capacity, and augmented stiffness, have prompted its gradual integration into bridge engineering applications. In this study, the calculated values of shear strength under three current design codes were reviewed, and the shear failure phenomena and its determinants of narrow-width steel box–ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) composite beams under negative bending moment conditions were investigated, which were mainly determined by shear span ratio, concrete wing plate, UHPC steel fiber content, UHPC plate thickness, and transverse partition inside the box. Concurrently, this paper evaluates two innovative structural designs, including a double-narrow steel box girder and a three-narrow steel box girder. In addition, strategies to reduce crack formation under the negative bending moment of long-span continuous narrow and wide box girder abutments are discussed, and we show that this measure can effectively control the formation of cracks to support the negative bending moment zone. At the same time, the scope of the application of a narrow-width steel box girder composite bridge is reviewed, and the conclusion is that a narrow-width steel box girder is mainly used in small-radius flat-curved bridges or widened-ramp bridges with a span of 30 m or more in interworking areas and in the main line with a 60–100 m span in mountainous or urban areas. Finally, the research direction of the shear resistance of the UHPC–narrow steel box girder under negative bending moments is proposed.

Application Strategy of BIM Technology in the Forward Design of Bridges

Bridge engineering is highly specialized and has spatial characteristics, which puts forward higher requirements for design work. The advancement of information technology has provided ample tools to facilitate bridge design work, with building information modeling (BIM) technology being one of them. BIM technology ensures the efficiency and quality of the forward design of bridges, while also reducing construction costs. This article starts with defining the concept of BIM technology, followed by a discussion on its advantages in bridge design and application process, which serves as a reference for other bridge designers.

Study on Structure-Borne Noise Characteristics of Long-Span Steel Truss Bridge in Urban Rail Transit

The application of long-span steel bridge in urban rail transit is becoming more and more extensive, but the structure-borne noise of steel bridge induced by passing train is also prominent. Research on the structure-borne noise problem of long-span steel bridge in urban rail transit has positive significance in promoting the sustainable development of steel bridge, and improving the quality of sound environment along rail transit. In this work, dynamic receptance principle, finite element method and statistical energy method are combined to establish the structure-borne noise prediction model of the long-span steel bridge, and the rationality and validity of the model are verified based on field measurement results. Based on the prediction model, the noise radiation characteristics of large-span steel truss bridge in urban rail transit are studied, and the following conclusions are drawn: The bridge deck has the strongest acoustic contribution ability, with the contribution rate of 33–44%, followed by the longitudinal web and transverse web, with the contribution rate of 23–30%, followed by the truss chord, with the contribution rate of 5–8%, and the truss web, longitudinal wing and transverse wing have weak contribution ability, with the contribution rate of less than 2%. The acoustic radiation efficiency of steel truss bridge components reaches its peak at the critical frequency, and the critical frequency is determined by the thickness of steel bridge plate components when the material parameters are fixed. Under ordinary track structures, the middle-to-high frequency noise distribution characteristics of large-span steel truss bridge structure are obvious. Damping pad floating slab track can effectively suppress the high-frequency noise of steel bridge, and the overall sound level can be reduced by about 11–14[Formula: see text]dB.

Experimental study on strength and carbonation performance of hybrid fibre lightweight aggregate concrete in precast structures

To improve the brittle failure characteristics and carbonation performance of lightweight aggregate concrete, basalt fibre, and polyacrylonitrile fibre were incorporated. The effects of the two fibres on the compression strength and carbonation depth were studied through compression tests and rapid carbonation tests. The effects of mineral admixture proportion were also studied. The results show that when the mass content of basalt fibre and polyacrylonitrile fibre is 2.8 kg/m3 and 0.9 kg/m3, respectively, the average increase of compression strength for different ages is approximately 40%, and the average decrease of carbonation depth for different ages is approximately 8%. Furthermore, when the mass content of mineral admixture is 30%, the higher proportion of slag contributed to the greater compression strength, but smaller carbonation depth. As supported by the experimental results, the improvements in strength and carbonation performance of lightweight aggregate concrete will make it more competitive in the application of precast buildings and long-span bridges.

Wastewater remediation and bioelectricity generation in dual chambered salt bridge microbial fuel cell: A mini‐review

AbstractThe purpose of this article is to assess the feasibility analysis of microbial fuel cells (MFCs), particularly in the configuration of dual chamber salt bridge microbial fuel cell (DCSB‐MFC), as a promising approach for simultaneous bioelectricity generation and wastewater remediation. The application of a salt bridge presents an economically viable alternative to the use of a proton exchange membrane, which is known for its high cost, in the construction of MFCs. This arrangement has been demonstrated to offer significant benefits in terms of enhancing the performance of new elements and evaluating operational parameters. However, it also encounters issues related to the total internal resistance (Rint) of the MFCs as well as power density (P). In addition, it has been found that traditional packing materials such activated carbon and gravel demonstrate poor permeability, internal resistance, and slow biofilm growth. Furthermore, there is a necessity to search for electrodes that possess high resistance to corrosion and are cost‐effective to achieve optimal bioelectricity generation. Therefore, this article aims to emphasize the research areas that require attention. By addressing these areas, the actual implementation of this configuration can be brought closer to practical implementation.

Steel Structures Research Update: Innovative Steel Deck System for Highway Bridge Applications

Ongoing research on innovative steel bridge decks is highlighted. This study, currently under way at the University of Kansas, is led by Dr. William Collins, Associate Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering. Dr. Collins’s research interests include fatigue and fracture of metallic structures; bridge design, fabrication, construction, and performance; and evaluation and preservation of historic structures. Among Dr. Collins’s accolades are the Robert J. Dexter Memorial Award, a Fulbright Scholar Award to conduct fracture mechanics research in Finland, and the AISC Milek Fellowship. The four-year Milek Fellowship is supporting this research on innovative steel deck systems for highway bridge applications—the first Milek Fellowship project to focus on bridges. Selected highlights from the work to date are presented, along with a preview of future research tasks.

Headed coupling behavior of large diameter Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloy bars: Mechanical testing and microstructural analyses

Cu-Al-Mn (CAM) superelastic alloy bars (SEAs) have received increasing attention in bridge applications. To take full advantage of their strain recovery and energy dissipation capacity, CAM SEAs are usually only applied in the plastic hinge regions of columns as part of the longitudinal reinforcement and coupled with steel rebar through mechanical splices. In this study, the feasibility of using headed coupling to connect large diameter CAM SEAs with steel rebar was investigated. Five large diameter CAM SEAs with headed ends were prepared: one 30 mm diameter and four 20 mm diameter samples. First, mechanical tests were performed on the five headed samples where each sample was coupled with one steel rebar at each end. Monotonic, incremental and constant strain cyclic loading was applied to simulate earthquake loading. The key mechanical properties were extracted and discussed. Second, microstructural analyses including electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), metallographic imaging, Vickers hardness testing and fractographic evaluation were performed. The crystal orientation, phase composition and fracture surfaces were investigated to understand the effect of heading process on the stress induced martensitic transformation (SIMT), phase composition and failure of the headed CAM SEAs. It was found that the heading process only affects the near end portion of the specimen and it has no influence in the middle portion of the bars. Therefore, the strain recovery capacity of the CAM SEAs after heading was not reduced. Heading process led to high density of bainite phase precipitation at the end portions, which strengthened the sample. In order to uniformly strengthen the headed end of large diameter CAM SEAs, the key is to ensure a consistent cooling rate in the central and peripheral regions of the headed end after the heading process.

Aerodynamics and surrounding flow patterns of a long-span bridge girder model with triple-separated boxes

The triple-box girder is finding broader applications in super long-span bridges for its excellent performance of flutter stability and traffic adaptability. In the present study, a bridge girder model with three separated boxes is experimentally investigated in detail via wind tunnel tests. In consideration of web modifications and accessory structures, the multi-point surface-pressure measurement and smoke-wire flow visualization are applied to investigate the aerostatic characteristics and flow structures. The “dual-frequency” phenomenon is found and explained for the bare girder with curved webs. For the present girder with linear webs, the global field is dominated by the separated-shear-layer instability. For the bare girder with curved webs, the upstream gap flow is dominated by the separated-shear-layer instability while the downstream gap flow is dominated by the double-shear-layer instability. The downstream gap flow exhibits obvious intermittent characteristics. In addition, non-Gaussian characteristic analysis of the surface wind pressures is introduced and improved for engineering practice. The distinguishing principle based on the skewness and kurtosis has high adaptability to both the bare girder and the completed bridge. In addition, semi-linear webs show better drag reduction. Combinations of accessory structures are also studied. The results show that during the construction process, prioritizing the installation of highway wind barriers can optimize the aerostatic performance of bridges. The present study embraces the booming era of long-span bridges with a triple-box girder and enriches the studies of bridge aerostatics.

Simplified method to detect resonance effects in railway bridges. Viaduct over Aragón River and Almonte bridge application

Detecting resonant effects in bridges has been studied for many years, but it has only been solved in a closed form for simple bridges. This article presents a simplified method that enables the calculation of resonance velocities in all types of bridges in an easy manner. The method is based on the concept of dynamic influence line and is validated through finite element models. These models range from simply supported bridges to complex real bridges such as the Almonte Viaduct, the world’s longest arch bridge of its typology. In the real bridge models, a dynamic analysis is performed according to the Eurocode to identify train velocities that induce resonant effects, and these velocities are checked against the simplified method with very good results.

Acoustic shadow zone of the guided wave in a variable thickness plate

This paper calculates the acoustic shadow zone of the guided wave in a variable thickness plate. The variable thickness plate has a wide range of applications in bridges, ships, etc., and the guided wave is often used for its nondestructive testing. The velocity gradient induced by thickness variations will deflect the guided wave towards lower phase velocities. Both frequency and thickness variation play crucial roles in determining the extent of path bending. In particular, the guided wave can undergo reverse propagation at the non-boundary of the plate. This curved propagation path results in an acoustic shadow zone, inaccessible to direct waves. This article calculates and experimentally verifies the curved propagation path of dispersive guided waves. Experiments show that the degree of propagation path bending increases with the increase of frequency in a certain frequency range. On the path that varies along the thickness, the experiment observes an acoustic shadow zone that accounts for nearly 25% of the total path. Additionally, a practical case study involving a guided wave with a curved path is presented. Consideration of the curved path improves the positioning accuracy, offering insights into damage location in variable thickness plates. This research on the propagation path and acoustic shadow zone contributes to advancing the understanding of guided wave propagation characteristics and enhancing their application in nondestructive testing for variable thickness structures.

Design of UHPC prestressed girders for shear

AbstractBreakthrough technology of ultra‐high‐performance concrete (UHPC) introduced in the 1990s exhibits several exceptional mechanical properties that are advantageous in elements of bridge applications. Extensive research has aimed to industrialize UHPC and develop design models. This paper investigates several design models for shear, including a unified approach with that of conventional concrete based on the modified compression field theory (MCFT). An experimental database of UHPC prestressed concrete girders subjected to shear failure is compiled to evaluate model accuracy and a reliability study is conducted to establish appropriate safety factors. The analysis demonstrates that the proposed MCFT‐based model aligns well with experimental results, exhibiting a suitable level of conservatism for design. A reliability assessment of a typical prestressed girder designed according to Canadian Standards Association building and bridge loadings is performed, resulting in a structural reliability evaluation against a target reliability index. The study recommends specific strength reduction and safety factors for design approaches using UHPC.
