A virtual biosignals analyzer

The virtual instrumentation is in great demand now a day due to its flexibility as well as cost-effectiveness. Lab VIEW is a great platform in which one can design virtual instruments. This article deals with the design of the virtual biosignal analyzer. This analyzer has been mainly designed for academic purpose. It can be used by industries for understanding the biosignals as well as to find out which filters are best suited for filtering the biosignals. This analyzer consists of the various virtual instrument applications which deal with the analysis of biosignals like ECG, EMG, and EEG. So that the students, professionals as well as industrialists can understand which filter or which analysis is best suited for the particular biosignals, which can help them to design the real-time instrument. The purpose of this article is to provide the virtual toolkit to the professional working in this field so that an accurate real-time instrument can be designed.

Wireless Photoplethysmography Sensor for Continuous Blood Pressure Biosignal Shape Acquisition

Blood pressure assessment plays a vital role in day-to-day clinical diagnosis procedures as well as personal monitoring. Thus, blood pressure monitoring devices must afford convenience and be easy to use with no side effects on the user. This paper presents a compact, economical, power-efficient, and convenient wireless plethysmography sensor for real-time blood pressure biosignal monitoring. The proposed sensor facilitates blood pressure signal shape sensing, signal conditioning, and data conversion as well as its wireless transmission to a monitoring terminal. Received data can, subsequently, be compiled and stored on a computer via a Wi-Fi module. During monitoring, users can observe blood pressure signals being processed and displayed on the graphical user interface (GUI)—developed using a virtual instrumentation (VI) application. The proposed device comprises a finger clip optical pulse sensor, analogue signal preprocessing, microcontroller, and Wi-Fi module. It consumes approximately 500 mW power when operating in the active mode and synthesized using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components. Experimental results reveal that the proposed device is reliable and facilitates efficient blood pressure monitoring. The proposed wireless photoplethysmographic (PPG) sensor is a preliminary (or first) version of the intended device manifestation. It provides raw blood pressure data for further classification. Additionally, the collected data concerning the blood pressure wave shape can be easily analysed for use in other biosignal observations, interpretations, and investigations. The design approach also allows the device to be built into a wearable system for further research purposes.

Application of Virtual instrument in demonstration experiment of Electronic Technology

Virtual instrument has the advantages of high openness and flexibility, short development period and low development cost. It has epoch-making significance compared with traditional instrument. With the development of electronic and electrical technology and network communication technology, as well as computer technology and software technology, virtual instrument will be more widely used on the wings of network. Virtual instrument is a kind of computer instrument system whose function is designed and defined by user, has virtual panel, and its testing function is realized by testing software on the hardware platform with computer as the core. The paper presents application of Virtual instrument in demonstration experiment of Electronic Technology.

Virtual instrumentation based learning methodology for teaching power system measurement and protection

AbstractIn this work, virtual instrumentation based learning methodology is presented for teaching measurement and protection in power systems courses at the Faculty of Electromechanical Engineering of the University of Colima, Mexico. The proposed methodology uses the project‐based learning method for developing experience learning. The students develop the hardware which can be used with the conventional machinery laboratory equipment and it considers the necessary security aspects to provide students with safe studying conditions by avoiding the risk of hazards. Through the use of low‐cost voltage and current sensors, the variables of interest of the equipment under measurement and protection are reduced to suitable values for the data acquisition system (DAQ). The voltage and current signals are processed using the LabVIEW® environment and the algorithms for power metering and the most common relays are developed. Acting signals coming from the DAQ are interfaced with the electrical machines by appropriate contactors and which simulates the power switchgear. The implemented hardware and the algorithms developed, allow students to measure the power consumption of conventional loads and to reproduce the most used relays by the electrical industry. This proposal represents an alternative to the high costs of didactic equipment. Finally, a survey provides a good insight of how the application of virtual instrumentation in the teaching process impacts the development of professional skills in the ambit of measurement and protection of power systems.

Development and application of network virtual instrument for emission spectrum of pulsed high-voltage direct current discharge

Network virtual instrument (VI) is a new development direction in current automated test. Based on LabVIEW, the software and hardware system of VI used for emission spectrum of pulsed high-voltage direct current (DC) discharge is developed and applied to investigate pulsed high-voltage DC discharge of nitrogen. By doing so, various functions are realized including real time collection of emission spectrum of nitrogen, monitoring operation state of instruments and real time analysis and processing of data. By using shared variables and DataSocket technology in LabVIEW, the network VI system based on field VI is established. The system can acquire the emission spectrum of nitrogen in the test site, monitor operation states of field instruments, realize real time face-to-face interchange of two sites, and analyze data in the far-end from the network terminal. By employing the network VI system, the staff in the two sites acquired the same emission spectrum of nitrogen and conducted the real time communication. By comparing with the previous results, it can be seen that the experimental data obtained by using the system are highly precise. This implies that the system shows reliable network stability and safety and satisfies the requirements for studying the emission spectrum of pulsed high-voltage discharge in high-precision fields or network terminals. The proposed architecture system is described and the target group gets the useful enlightenment in many fields including engineering remote users, specifically in control- and automation-related tasks.

New experimental model for single liver lobe hyperthermia in small animals using non-directional microwaves.

PurposeOur aim was to develop a new experimental model for in vivo hyperthermia using non-directional microwaves, applicable to small experimental animals. We present an affordable approach for targeted microwave heat delivery to an isolated liver lobe in rat, which allows rapid, precise and stable tissue temperature control.Materials and methodsA new experimental model is proposed. We used a commercial available magnetron generating 2450 MHz, with 4.4V and 14A in the filament and 4500V anodic voltage. Modifications were required in order to adjust tissue heating such as to prevent overheating and to allow for fine adjustments according to real-time target temperature. The heating is controlled using a virtual instrument application implemented in LabView® and responds to 0.1° C variations in the target. Ten healthy adult male Wistar rats, weighing 250–270 g were used in this study. The middle liver lobe was the target for controlled heating, while the rest of the living animal was protected.ResultsIn vivo microwave delivery using our experimental setting is safe for the animals. Target tissue temperature rises from 30°C to 40°C with 3.375°C / second (R2 = 0.9551), while the increment is lower it the next two intervals (40–42°C and 42–44°C) with 0.291°C/ s (R2 = 0.9337) and 0.136°C/ s (R2 = 0.7894) respectively, when testing in sequences. After reaching the desired temperature, controlled microwave delivery insures a very stable temperature during the experiments.ConclusionsWe have developed an inexpensive and easy to manufacture system for targeted hyperthermia using non-directional microwave radiation. This system allows for fine and stable temperature adjustments within the target tissue and is ideal for experimental models testing below or above threshold hyperthermia

On-Line Monitoring of Drill Wear in Machining of AISI 1040 Steel Using Virtual Instrumentation

In this research work, an attempt is made to develop the on-line wear state monitoring system during drilling process on Vertical Machining Centre (VMC). The main objectives of the present work is to predict the drill wear states of High Speed Steel (HSS) drill bit during the drilling of a AISI 1040 Steel work piece using standard data acquisition software Lab VIEW by the application of Virtual Instrumentation (VI). The drill bit wear states were analyzed using spindle motor cutting current signals. The effective drill wear model have been developed using spindle motor cutting current signals and the various cutting parameters through Lab VIEW, to predict wear states of the drill-bit. The developed on-line drill wear process monitoring system has been used for the continuous monitoring of the drill-bit status, and to exhibit the drill wear states. It was found that the developed model show a good agreement with the experimental data where the deviation in drill-bit wear is less than 7% for varying cutting conditions.

A Novel Smart Metering Infrastructure using Virtual Instrument

Objective: This paper describes the use of virtual instrumentation tool - LabVIEW for web based demand side energy monitoring using GSM based wireless data acquisition. Method: The demand side energy monitoring is carried out by microcontroller based system on Time of Day basis. The demand side energy utilization tracked by the microcontroller based system is transmitted using GSM communication to remote metering infrastructure implemented on LabVIEW platform for real time monitoring. The demand side energy utilization information acquired by metering infrastructure can be accessed over the internet using server - client model based communication. The metering infrastructure is designed to provide SMS based customer service regarding monthly energy utilization. Findings: Demonstrates the use of virtual instrument for wireless and internet based automation of energy metering system for functions such as remote meter reading, meter data management, report generation and finally real time and historical trending are realized. Applications/Improvements: The LabVIEW based virtual instrument application can be improved to perform multipoint wireless communication.

The Research of Intelligent Gas Leak Ultrasonic Testing System

This paper presents the basic principle of gas leak ultrasonic produce, the use of ultrasonic transducer array collecting leak ultrasonic signal, the signal filtering and power spectrum estimation of signal processing algorithms, intelligent gas leak detection system is developed. The detector is convenient to use, can realize quick check gas leak, application of virtual instrument for leakage signal analysis and processing, implementation of gas leak detection and estimation of leakage.

A Virtual Instrument for SEM Uncertainty Analysis

To assure the metrological traceability of a measurement, it is required to perform an analysis of the measurement uncertainty specific to the measurement task. An approach to estimate the measurement uncertainty for complex systems is the so-called virtual measuring instrument: The measuring process is simulated taking into account its influencing parameters and a statistical analysis is performed by means of Monte-Carlo calculations. We present the development of such a virtual measuring instrument for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) which allows to estimate the measurement uncertainty in compliance with GUM for dimensional measuring tasks in nano- and microsystems technology. By application of this virtual instrument, model based corrections of systematic errors are made possible and the cognition of the strength of different perturbing influences can lead to recommendations to optimize measurement instruments and methods. The virtual model programmed in MATLAB is called ‘vREM’, it includes all essential components of the measuring chain of an SEM as modules: The electron source, the electron-optical lens-system, the scan-generator, the interaction of the electrons within the object, electron detectors, simple analysis procedures and consideration of external disturbances. By adjusting parameters uncertainty contributions can be assigned to the virtual probe, the virtual specimen and the virtual detector signals.

Development of On-Line Drill Wear Monitoring System in Machining of AISI 1018 Steel Using Virtual Instrumentation

This paper describes the development of on-line wear state monitoring system in drilling process on Vertical Machining Centre (VMC). In this work, standard data acquisition software LabVIEW (Laboratory Virtual Instrumentation Engineering Workbench) in the application of Virtual Instrumentation (VI) has been applied to predict the drill wear states of High Speed Steel (HSS) drill bit for drilling on a AISI 1018 Steel work piece. Drill wear state prediction allows the determination of the hole quality as well as tool replacement at proper time, during machining. Drilling experiments have been carried out over a wide range of varying cutting conditions (cutting speed, drill diameter, feed-rate) and the effects of drill wear on the spindle motor cutting current signals have been investigated. The effective drill wear model has been established to predict the drill wear states based on the relationship between the spindle motor cutting current signals and the various cutting parameters, using LabVIEW. The established on-line drill wear process monitoring system has been used for the continuous monitoring of the cutting tool status, and to exhibit the drill wear states as a percentage of the maximum permissible wear. Meanwhile, it facilitates defective tool replacement at the proper time in an automated manufacturing environment, and found to be in very good agreement to the experimentally determined drill wear values.

Application of Virtual Instrument in Electronic Education

Virtual instrumentation is defined as the combination of measurement and control hardware and application software with industry-standard computer technology to create user-defined instrumentation systems. Since the birth of virtual instrument (VI), it enters rapidly into the industrial production field, and Research and Development (RD) field. It can improve production quality, shorten development time, and increase production efficiency. So it is wildly used in companies. In order to improve the ability of students’ using new technology and equipment, and save daily funds, we try to use virtual instrument instead of traditional instruments for analysis and design circuits. The paper adopts the software-LabVIEW and many hardware modules of NI (National Instrument) to study of virtual instrument applied in electronic education of vocational college. The research result of this work can provide a theoretical and practical foundation for vocational education of virtual instrument in the future. Application of Virtual Instrument in Geological Exploration Equipment

To ensure wire-line core drilling process more safe, efficient and quality, a real time monitoring and control system for drilling rig was built based on virtual instrument technology. Currently, the geological exploration have more precise requirements of many parameters, this system is very helpful for geological exploration. The system took IPC as main controller and used multi-sensors through DAQ card or serial port to monitor multi-parameters. Simultaneously, instructions ordered by host computer through digital-to-analog output card transmit to actuator, such as solenoid valve, to control drilling processs parameters. LabVIEW graphic oriented software platform provides a flexible and reliable support for drilling parameters supervisory control and data acquisition system. This applied engineering software offers a complete monitoring for several parameters of drilling rig.

Using this instrument, there is the possibility to acquire the current waveform which flows through the fuse and set the current threshold when a command signal is provided in order to blow the fuse on the basis of controllable fusing effect. Actually, there is implemented the time-current characteristic of the new fuse, and depending on the application the moment of circuit interruption can be delayed. It results an adjusted new time-current characteristic for the fuse.

Design and Implementation of an On-Board Automatic Test System Based on CPCI Bus for Aerial Fire Control Equipment

An on-board automatic test system (ATS) based on CPCI bus was designed utilizing the application of computer, virtual instrument and database technology. In this paper, the test system architecture was introduced, the hardware structure explained and the software implementation expounded. Application of the prototype system on aerial fire control equipment for a series of fighters proved that proposed system is more powerful in functions, better in user interface and more convenient in operation compared with the traditional automatic test system.

On-line drill wear monitoring in high speed machining of jute fiber-reinforced composites using virtual instrumentation

Many challenges in machining need to be overcome in replacing fiber reinforced composites. In this work, jute fiber reinforced bioepoxy resin laminates were manufactured, drilled and inspected. The drilling operations were performed on jute fiber reinforced composites by high speed steel (HSS) drill bits. Drill wear state prediction allows the determination of the hole quality as well as tool replacement at proper time, during the drilling process in high speed machining (HSM). The effective drill wear model has been established to predict the drill wear states based on the relationship between the cutting current signals and the various cutting parameters (cutting speed, feed, drill diameter), using the standard data acquisition software Laboratory Virtual Instrumentation Engineering Workbench (LabVIEW) in the application of virtual instrumentation (VI). Application of Virtual Instrument on Condition Monitoring and Fault Diagnosis System of the Rotating Machinery

In the paper it can be easier to realize the acquisition of the rotating machinery vibration signal and condition monitoring through the configuration the platform of virtual instrumentation. For the data acquisition it is enough to be plus with two acceleration sensors and a counter. The system is divided into parameter setting module, data acquisition, storage and display module, amplitude domain analysis module, time-domain analysis module, frequency domain analysis module, time-frequency domain analysis module and fault diagnosis module. The signal acquisition is got by using the PCI-6024E data acquisition card. And it is can be saved as binary data stream files and waveform data file according to the requirements of the sequence data processing. Signal analysis is conducted by using LabVIEW software and draw out the vibration spectrum diagram in order to achieve fault diagnosis of rotating machinery.

Design about Monitoring and Diagnosis System Structure of Rotating Machinery Based on LabVIEW

Rotating machinery becomes more and more large and complex, increasingly high degree of automation. Rotating machinery fault could easily lead to heavy losses. Therefore, the requirements of monitoring and diagnosis systems are increasing high. In this paper, the superiority of the application of virtual instrument on condition monitoring and diagnosis system building in the industrial production is described. And then, the rotor system as the main research object, a rotating machinery condition monitoring and diagnosis system is built by using Virtual Instrument technology. At the same time, the structure of the condition monitoring and diagnosis system is discussed. Besides, data acquisition process and fault features recognition method are discussed as well. Finally, the correctness and accuracy of fault detection are verified by means of experiments.
