Economic Valuation of Recreational-benefits and Visitation Rate of Selected Lakes in Coimbatore City: An Application of Travel Cost Method

Lakes provide direct and indirect use values and benefits; it was support to human well-being. The recreational values and benefits are one of the direct use values of the lake. It includes enjoying nature with family and friends for relaxation,boating rides, parks, and enjoying other facilities available in the lakes. The Periyakulam/Ukkadam Lake and Valankulam Lake in Coimbatore City have been chosen for this study. The convenient sampling method was adopted to confirm the sample size,from Ukkadam Lake 70 sample visitors and from Valankulam Lake 50 sample visitors have been selected for this study. This study explores the recreational value and visitation rate of selected lakesby using the Travel Cost Method with application of multiple regression. The study found out the Ukkadam lake recreational value was Rs. 1062.78/visit and the Valankulam lake recreational value was Rs. 619.94/ visit gained by sample visitors. The regression result show that R2value was 0.377, and the lake visitation rate was determined by the travel cost, monthly income of the visitors, mode of transport, type of visit, recreational benefits,and distance traveled to reach the Lake. The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation made a good effort in lake restoration process, it was benefits to the visitors. In this study, visitors stated some drawbacks in facilities available in lakes. The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation should take necessary actions to improve the facilities in the lakes. This will make the path for sustainability of recreational benefits.

Valuing nature-based recreation in forest areas in Italy: An application of Travel Cost Method (TCM)

Nature-based recreation provides benefits facilitating social interactions and cohesion, creating job opportunities, and stimulating the local economy. The aim of this study was to assess the recreational economic value of different forest areas considering two aspects: stand features and proximity of the forest to urban areas. An individual Travel Cost Method (TCM) was applied in three study areas in Italy involving 603 visitors in the survey. The results show that in all three case studies the most important forest-based recreational activity carried out by visitors is hiking, followed by picnicking and mountain biking. The TCM estimates a consumer surplus between €7.33 and €17.37 per visit. The key points highlighted by the study are that: managed natural forests have a higher recreational economic value than unmanaged artificial forests; the peri-urban forests are characterized by a higher number of visitors but a lower value per visit than mountain forests.

The economic value of Malecón 2000 in Guayaquil, Ecuador: An application of the travel cost method

Malecón 2000 is one of the most important urban parks in Ecuador. It is a recreational and ecological park that combines history, trade, culture, and entertainment. It is the most iconic and active hub for economic and touristic activities in the city of Guayaquil. Thus, it is essential to know the characteristics of visitors and the value they attribute to the site and its amenities to promote conservation and improvement policies. Even more, Malecón 2000 is a public good that does not have an explicit market and thus is not incorporated in consumers' decisions. This paper shows an application of the Individual Travel Cost Method to estimate the economic value of recreational use of Malecón 2000, which is estimated at US$ 15.72 per-person-per-visit. These results represent a useful contribution to the conservation and improvement of the site.

Application of travel cost method to estimate tourism recreational value of Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden, Guwahati, Assam, India

Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden spreads across 175 hectares and attracts more than 0.50 million domestic tourists every year. Travel cost data for quantification of economic value of recreational services of the zoo was collected through direct interview of 324 visitors. Different socio-economic characteristics of tourists that influence individual consumer surplus were also recorded. Results show that average consumer surplus per tourist per visit accruing to domestic tourists was ₹672 and total annual recreational value of the zoo was ₹364.69 million (US$5.21 million) which is almost 20 times to the total revenue (₹18.49 million) earned by the zoo in a year. This clearly shows that revenue collected through entry fee is not reflecting the true economic value of recreational services of the zoo. The results of the study provide enough explanation for enhanced investment from government in the zoo to ensure continued flow of essential ecosystem service.

However, despite the many sources of attractions, because the public goods nature of the lake its demand and value in terms of its recreation service to society is not known, which makes deficit to sustain and expand the recreational service of the lake. For this reason, this study analyzed the recreational value of Lake and its demand using an individual travel cost method (ITCM) based on face-to-face interview with 223 randomly selected local visitors of the Lake.

The truncated Poisson model was used in the empirical analysis to estimate the recreational value of the lake and to identify its determinants. The econometric result of this model shows visitor’s martial statues, family size, and mode of transportation, type of visit, distance and travel cost are significant factors that affects the visitation rate for recreational site. And the study estimates that the on-site recreational benefits per visit per person was about 3353.64 per year and the expected total annual on-site recreational benefit of the site is 118,698,734.16 birr.

The improvement of solidwaste management in Cibodas Botanical Garden through environmental economic valuation using the travel cost method

Cibodas Botanical Garden (CBG) is believed to have high environmental value for its function as conservation area and beautiful scenery. However, prior to this research, there is lack of economic valuation to determine the total value of CBG, including its environment. The local government, on the other hand, needs such environmental economic valuation to execute better decisions related to the CBG. This study aims at providing the mostly-needed economic valuation through the application of Travel Cost Method. The Travel Cost Method (TCM) is a method to calculate the economic value of products or services that do not own market value. This method utilises total cost of consumers who travel to certain places, preferably tourist destinations. The cost spent by consumers are considered as their willingness to pay (WTP) for the visited destination(s). In this study, TCM is used by preparing questionnaires for Cibodas visitors, analysing the results of the questionnaires, calculating the total economic value (TEV) of Cibodas, determining the consumer surplus, and proposing environmental programs at CBG. At the end, it was calculated that the TEV of Cibodas Botanical Garden is IDR113,072,532,700 with average WTP of the visitors IDR202,484 per visitor and the consumer surplus of IDR32,344 per visitor. Also, this study reveals that solid waste management improvement at CBG can be funded by potential income from the consumer surplus.

Economic Valuation of Cultural Heritage: Application of Travel Cost Method to the National Museum and Research Center of Altamira

The economic assessment of non-marketed resources (i.e., cultural heritage) can be developed with stated or revealed preference methods. Travel cost method (TCM) is based on the demand theory and assumes that the demand for a recreational site is inversely related to the travel costs that a certain visitor must face to enjoy it. Its application requires data about the tourist’s origin. This work aims to analyze the economic value of the National Museum and Research Center of Altamira, which was created to research, conserve, and broadcast the Cave of Altamira (UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985). It includes an accurate replica known as the “Neocave”. Two different TCM approaches have been applied to obtain the demand curve of the museum, which is a powerful tool that helps to assess past and future investments. It has also provided the annual economic value estimate of the National Museum and Research Center of Altamira, which varies between 4.75 and 8.00 million € per year.

Evaluation of Economic Value of Pilikula Lake Using Travel Cost and Contingent Valuation Methods

Water ecosystems provide a wide range of goods and services for human benefit and consumption. But these benefits are still largely left out in decisions about how to allocate water, how much to charge for water products and services, etc. Nowadays ecosystems can be evaluated in terms of total economic value. Travel Cost Method (TCM) and Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) are two methods used for ecosystem valuation in which Willingness to Pay (WTP) for ecosystem benefits are determined. The present study was taken up to evaluate the economic value of water as related to recreational use at the Pilikula Lake, Mangalore, India. The objective was to estimate visitors’ WTP for services rendered by the facilities available at the lake using TCM and CVM. A zonal approach was used for the valuation in TCM, and Open-Ended questions were used for CVM elicitation. Data collection was completed through direct interview with 500 visitors at Pilikula Lake using a questionnaire. Data analysis was carried out in MS Excel® and SPSS® Statistical software. The mean WTP value for improving extra facilities at Pilikula Lake through open-ended stated preference was very less compared to that obtained through application of TCM.

Recreation demand and economic value: An application of travel cost method for Xiamen Island

This paper uses the travel cost method to evaluate the recreational benefits of a beach along the eastern coast of Xiamen Island in China. Our results indicate that the total value for the beach and its associated recreation is in excess of US$53 million. This paper also discusses the protection of this significant tourism resource and considers the use of a suitable entrance fee.
