Characterization of selected additive manufacturing materials for synchrotron monochromatic imaging and broad-beam radiotherapy at the Australian synchrotron-imaging and medical beamline

Objective. This study aims to characterize radiological properties of selected additive manufacturing (AM) materials utilizing both material extrusion and vat photopolymerization technologies. Monochromatic synchrotron x-ray images and synchrotron treatment beam dosimetry were acquired at the hutch 3B and 2B of the Australian Synchrotron-Imaging and Medical Beamline. Approach. Eight energies from 30 keV up to 65 keV were used to acquire the attenuation coefficients of the AM materials. Comparison of theoretical, and experimental attenuation data of AM materials and standard solid water for MV linac was performed. Broad-beam dosimetry experiment through attenuated dose measurement and a Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation were done for the studied materials to investigate its attenuation properties specific for a 4 tesla wiggler field with varying synchrotron radiation beam qualities. Main results. Polylactic acid (PLA) plus matches attenuation coefficients of both soft tissue and brain tissue, while acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, Acrylonitrile styrene acrylate, and Draft resin have close equivalence to adipose tissue. Lastly, PLA, co-polyester plus, thermoplastic polyurethane, and White resins are promising substitute materials for breast tissue. For broad-beam experiment and simulation, many of the studied materials were able to simulate RMI457 Solid Water and bolus within ±10% for the three synchrotron beam qualities. These results are useful in fabricating phantoms for synchrotron and other related medical radiation applications such as orthovoltage treatments. Significance and conclusion. These 3D printing materials were studied as potential substitutes for selected tissues such as breast tissue, adipose tissue, soft-tissue, and brain tissue useful in fabricating 3D printed phantoms for synchrotron imaging, therapy, and orthovoltage applications. Fabricating customizable heterogeneous anthropomorphic phantoms (e.g. breast, head, thorax) and pre-clinical animal phantoms (e.g. rodents, canine) for synchrotron imaging and radiotherapy using AM can be done based on the results of this study.

The advanced motion control system in HEPS beamline

In synchrotron radiation facilities such as the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS), numerous motorized actuators are equipped on the optics devices of HEPS beamline to manipulate the orientation of crystals and mirrors, thereby altering the position and characteristics of X-rays. The motion control system (MCS) plays an important role in the optics devices of HEPS beamlines, such as monochromator, K-B mirror and sample plants. In order to acquire the specify properties of X-ray and satisfy the complex experimental requirements, MCS must have the ability to handle the complicated control demands. Therefore, HEPS has developed a standardized motion control system for synchrotron radiation applications, which is a distributed system based on EtherCAT fieldbus. The hardware of this system consists of the control unit and driver unit, which has the flexibility to suit for different applications. The software of MCS is designed under the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS), which is very popular in synchrotron radiation facilities all over the world. In this paper, the performance tests of IOC software were demonstrated, and a few flyscan applications were given, which include spiral scan, raster scan and position event trigger, to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of this system.

Characterization results of the first small pixel high rate (SPHIRD) pixel detector prototypes

This work presents a summary of the experimental results and the performance obtained from a first set of p-type silicon SPHIRD prototypes. The SPHIRD project (Small Pixel High Rate photon counting Detector) targets a new generation of X-ray photon counting hybrid pixel detectors for synchrotron radiation applications, with small pixels and operating between 10 and 30 keV. The readout ASIC is designed to explore techniques that boost the count rate capabilities of the detector and methods to manage, or in some cases exploit, the effects of charge sharing that are unavoidable with small pixels in this type of detector.The achievement of high photon rates relies on the implementation of a fast charge-sensitive amplifier in the pixelin combination with pile-up compensation techniques, which have been compared experimentally. The obtained results show and quantify their effectiveness in increasing the count-rate handled by the detector.The readout chip also includes dedicated circuitry for the relocation of photon hits, a functionality necessary to reduce the photon losses that are observed in photon counting detectors due to charge sharing when the discrimination threshold is set to 50% of the photon energy. The circuitry is however not limited to full pixel relocation: it also implements resources to reassign X-ray hits within regions smaller than the physical pixel. All these operation modes were experimentally evaluated with a pencil beam and with full field images.

Imaging optimisation process of human lung tissue using synchrotron radiation microcomputed tomography in PLS‐II

AbstractSynchrotron radiation microcomputed tomography (SR‐μCT) can provide non‐destructive three‐dimensional investigation for soft tissue with high resolution. The aim of this study is to evaluate technical improvements in microcomputed tomographic imaging of human lung tissue using a synchrotron radiation source at the 6C biomedical beamline. SR‐μCT images of excised human lung tissue (6 mm vertically and 10 mm horizontally sized) were explored at the 6C biomedical beamline in the Pohang accelerator laboratory (Pohang, Republic of Korea) using phase retrieval methods with a modified Bronnikov algorithm. Experimental data collection was performed with changes in the following conditions: the presence of a graphite attenuator, sample to detector distance, the presence of different scintillators and increasing pixel sizes. We identified that the resolution of lung tissue images was sufficiently enhanced when the graphite attenuator was not applied, 550 mm of sample to detector distance, with Cadmium tungsten (CdWO4) scintillator and twice binning of the pixel data and could be comparable with images from pathologic examination. Refinement of SR‐μCT techniques for soft tissue originating from the human body would advance the potential clinical application of synchrotron radiation in the near future.

Modifying Copper with Alumina during a Mechanically Stimulated Reaction

IR spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis, including the application of synchrotron radiation, have been used to study the mechanochemical reduction of copper oxide with alumi-num at the stoichiometric ratio of the components and in the presence of an excess of oxide-forming metal and aluminum solid solution in copper as well. The possibility is shown of the mechanochemical reduction of copper oxide with aluminum and aluminum solid solution in copper, which is accompanied by the forma-tion of the Сu/Al2O3 composite structure. To modify copper with alumina, using an aluminum solid solution in copper is preferable.

14th International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation (SRI 2021), 28 March to 1 April 2022

The International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation (SRI) is a unique and significant international forum held every three years in the community of synchrotron radiation (SR) and free electron lasers (FEL). It is the prime forum for fostering connections between cutting-edge synchrotron radiation instrumentation, science, and the requirements of the user community. The SRI 2021 had originally been scheduled to take place in Hamburg in summer 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed to 2022 and held as an online event.More than 1160 international participants from 25 countries met virtually at the SRI 2021. In nearly 290 talks and 450 posters, latest results were presented. Although it was an online-only conference, lively discussions took place in the nearly 40 parallel sessions, and the eight poster sessions were also very well attended.The main topics of the SRI conference were: new SR and FEL facilities, update plans of these facilities, and recent developments in various instrumentation areas like beamline design, X-ray optics, sample environments, detectors and spectrometers, data acquisition, and data analysis techniques or automation. These innovations contributed to new results for a wide range of experimental techniques and scientific applications such as X-ray scattering and spectroscopy, bio- and scanning imaging, structural biology crystallography, coherent techniques, or in-situ/operando methods. A dedicated session concerned industrial applications of synchrotron radiation.The field of synchrotron radiation instrumentation is currently seeing very active development due to various factors. Firstly, the number of SR sources world-wide is increasing significantly, with new sources in particular in Europe and in Asia. Secondly, a new generation of storage rings with new multi-bend achromat lattices are being implemented at a growing number of existing facilities. These facilities offer a significant increase of brilliance and coherence and thereby lead to new and improved applications of synchrotron radiation, in particular in the areas of imaging and high spatial resolution. Thirdly, the increase of soft and hard X-ray FEL sources worldwide and the maturation of their experimental techniques and scientific applications is the background for a strongly increasing number of developments for ultrafast time-resolved investigations of dynamic behaviour of materials and reactions. Emerging Applications of Synchrotron Radiation X-Ray Techniques in Single Atomic Catalysts.

Single atom catalysts (SACs) can achieve a maximum atom utilization efficiency of 100%, which provides significantly increased active sites compared with traditional catalysts during catalytic reactions. Synchrotron radiation technology is an important characterization method for identifying single-atom catalysts. Several types of internal information, such as the coordination number, bond length and electronic structure of metals, can all be analyzed. This review will focus on the introduction of synchrotron radiation techniques and their applications in SACs. First, the fundamentals of synchrotron radiation and the corresponding techniques applied in characterization of SACs will be briefly introduced, such as X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and in situ techniques. The detailed information obtained from synchrotron radiation X-ray characterization is described through four routes: 1) the local environment of a specific atom; 2) the oxidation state of SACs; 3) electronic structures at different orbitals; and 4) the in situ structure modification during catalytic reaction. In addition, a systematic summary of synchrotron radiation X-ray characterization on different types of SACs (noble metals and transition metals) will be discussed.

A hybrid pixel detector with 4D information for dynamic synchrotron radiation applications

TETPIX is a hybrid pixel detector designed for dynamic synchrotron radiation applications. It is based on hit-driven readout scheme. 4D information of every incoming photon, including 2D position, timing, and energy, can be detected at the same time. The chip consists of a 64 × 32 pixel array with a pixel size of 150 μm × 150 μm. A module system is designed with a sensitive area of 2 cm × 2 cm, and tested at synchrotron radiation beamlines. The results show an energy resolution better than 16% over a range of 10–15 keV, and a capability of fine timing structure detection.

Characterize the microstructure change after tendon enthesis injury using synchrotron radiation μCT.

The microstructure of the bone-tendon interface (BTI) deserves in-depth investigation. In this study, we first aimed to extend the application of synchrotron radiation μCT to characterize the gradient structure of supraspinatus tendon (SST) enthesis, from both tissue morphology to cell distribution. Second, to acquire detailed morphological information of SST enthesis when after injury. Our results showed that in normal enthesis, the phenotype of chondrocyte in BTI was dependent on its distance to subchondral bone. After injury, the fibrocartilage cells were disrupted, as evidenced by reduced lacunae size. Our observation may partly explain the loss of BTI mechanical properties after injury, and we believe the application of synchrotron radiation microcomputed tomography will have promising potential for characterizing the morphology changes in enthesis and for evaluating the therapeutic effects of interventions in preclinical studies.

HEPS-BPIX3: a fine pitch pixel readout chip working in single photon counting mode for synchrotron radiation applications

HEPS-BPIX3 is a hybrid pixel detector readout chip for X-ray applications for the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) in China. The readout chip contains an array of 88 × 88 pixels with a pixel size of 55 μm × 55 μm, working in single photon counting mode. Each pixel handles both polarities of positive and negative input charge signals and has a counting depth of 11 bits. Using a clock with a frequency up to 160 MHz, the chip can read out serially with zero dead time. Designed in a 130 nm CMOS technology, the chip has been measured and given the CSA charge gain of 17.6 mV/ke- for electron collection and 13 mV/ke- for hole collection, respectively. Bump-bonded detector modules with a 320-μm-thick silicon sensor were also tested. The test results showed an equivalent input noise of 156 e- and a counting rate up to 2.2 Mcps. Besides, an image using an X-ray tube was demonstrated and a frame rate of 1.8 kHz could be guaranteed. Measured characteristics present the normal functionality of the HEPS-BPIX3 chip and prove that the chip satisfies the HEPS requirements.

A high-power and high-stability power supply design

BEPCII is a high-performance collider with a design energy of 2.1 GeV. In order to obtain more physical experiments and synchrotron radiation applications, BEPCII decided to carry out energy upgrading to 2.5 GeV. Insufficient energy of special magnet power supplies in collision zone is a key factor restricting BEPCII's operation under 2.5 GeV energy. Therefore, three high-power and high-stability power supplies are designed for BEPCII energy upgrading. The designed power supplies output part adopts high-frequency chopper modules parallel connected and adopts digital-analog hybrid control methods. The voltage loop regulator uses high-speed analog control, and current loop regulator uses digital control which is based on FPGA. The experimental data show that the output current stability of the developed power supplies is lower than 50 ppm. The output current resolution is lower than 70 ppm. The developed power supplies can well meet the design requirements of BEPCII energy upgrading.

Shedding synchrotron light on teacher training

This paper aims to introduce the initiative Escola Sirius para Professores do Ensino Médio (ESPEM, Sirius School for High School Teachers) hosted by the Centro Nacional de Pesquisa em Energia e Materiais (CNPEM, Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials) and supported by the Sociedade Brasileira de Física (SBF, Brazilian Physical Society). The program covers the principles and applications of synchrotron radiation with expositive lectures, discussions, and visits to the CNPEM facilities. By using semi structured interviews, a remote focal group and surveys to find out the impact of ESPEM, we observed that the teachers shared their experience and disseminate the acquired knowledge with their peers and students.

Comparison of traditional and synchrotron beam methodologies in Mössbauer experiments in a rotating system.

Recent Mössbauer experiments in a rotating system reported by others in the literature have involved the application of synchrotron radiation onto a spinning semi-circular resonant absorber. Here, the physical interpretation of these methodologies, and their alleged performance improvement, is analyzed in the light of our own team's past experience based instead on the traditional laboratory setup. It is shown that a number of fundamental shortcomings in the approach reported in the literature deprives it of any practical significance with respect to the improvement of the technique of Mössbauer rotor experiments with a synchrotron source. It is concluded that, at present, only Mössbauer experiments relying on an ordinary compact source of resonant radiation and a resonant absorber both fixed on the rotor promise to provide crucial information with respect to the physical origin of the observed energy shift between emitted and absorbed resonant radiation in a rotating system.

A novel operando approach to analyze the structural evolution of metallic materials during friction with application of synchrotron radiation

In this study, we describe an experimental setup and a new approach for operando investigation of structural evolution of materials during wear and friction. The setup is particularly suited for testing various friction pairs, including those in which both rubbing bodies are made of metals. The developed device allows circumventing the problems related to significant scattering of X-rays produced by metals and makes it possible using “real samples” in synchrotron beamlines operating in reflection mode. To demonstrate the capabilities of the device and the proposed new approach, an iron-based massive sample was subjected to thousands of friction cycles using a cemented carbide pin. The material was probed with synchrotron X-ray radiation within a few milliseconds after leaving the friction zone. The results of the microstructural and structural analysis, as well as results obtained from diverse mathematical models, allowed us to evaluate several features, including gradual accumulation of defects, microstructural refinement, dislocation density changes, surface layer oxidation, as well as several other phenomena caused by the dry sliding friction process. Mainly, it was possible to conclude that the process of wear occurred due to the cooperative action of oxidation and plastic deformation, which began during the first cycle of frictional interaction and was manifested in increasing the dislocation density, whose type was changed gradually during testing. The number of defects quickly reached a threshold value and subsequently fluctuated around it due to periodically repeated processes of defect accumulation and stress relaxation resulting from material wear. It was also observed that friction led to the quick formation of a mechanically mixed layer, consisting of the sample material and a mixture of two types of iron oxide – hematite and magnetite. The delamination of this layer was probably the primary wear mechanism.
