Training and Application of Student Standardized Patients for Dental Education

<i>Background</i> Stomatology is a discipline closely combined with theory and practice, and pays attention to students’ operation abilities and clinical skills. Current dental education is encountering the situation of more theory than practice. The evaluation and application of standardized patients (SP) are gradually increasing in medical education. <i>Objective</i> This paper intends to describe the advantages of student standardized patients (SSP), how to construct and apply SSP for dental education. <i>Method</i> Recruit SP of stomatology students, and select appropriate cases based on the actual cases and common dental diseases. SSP training is conducted by experienced clinical teachers. SSP is trained to describe the disease in patient's language and give a reasonable response to enquiry and examination. <i>Result</i> Qualified SSP can be applied in inquiry, physical examination, teaching and evaluation of common dental diseases. SSP not only provide students with repeated practice, but also enable students to understand theoretical knowledge and cultivate clinical thinking more effectively in real clinical reception. This model of SSP application could stimulate learning enthusiasm of on-campus dental student, improve student clinical skills and thinking abilities, as well as reduce education expenses. <i>Conclusion</i> Using SSP is beneficial to help students construct clinical thinking, learn communication skills and build a harmonious doctor-patient relationship.

Progress in the applications of standardized patients in medical education and healthcare research

As a standard component in medical education in many countries, standardized patients have become professionals who provide valuable opportunities for training and evaluation of clinical skills among medical students and physicians. This paper reviewed the application of standardized patients in health care, discussed its advantages and disadvantages, and advocated continuation of in-depth research on standardized patients in China, and acceleration in the establishment of a formal system of standardized patients in medical education and health systems, so as to improve the quality of medical care. Assessment of Practice of Pedigree Drawing and Application of Standardized Patient in Medical Faculty Students

Drawing a pedigree is a useful and effective tool in medicine and has an important place in medical education.The aim of this study is to share our feedbacks on the pedigree drawing practice of 3rd year medical faculty students with a standardized patient applied in professional training skills program between 2012–2017.Materials and methods. A total of 583 medical faculty students asked appropriate questions to a standardized patient and drew a family tree. At the end of the practice, students were asked to fill an evaluation form. Propositions on the form were rated according to the 5 Likert scales. A chi-square was used to assess the differences in scoring.Results. 566 students (97.08 %) rated strongly agreed or agreed that appropriate tools and equipment were used in the practice. The attitude of the instructor was evaluated as appropriate, representing 98.11 % of the participants. About 97.09 % of the respondents reported that the time of practice was enough. These skills were reported to be necessary and might be used in their professional life, representing 82.19 % and 78.35 % respectively. No correlation was found between the scoring of propositions and the application of standardized patients. However, we have observed that the use of standardized patients in practice significantly increases the general assessment scores of family tree drawing practice (P < 0.032).Conclusions. Our data demonstrated that pedigree drawing training was evaluated positively by the students and standardized patient use did not make any differences in student evaluations.

The application of standardized patients in the clinical practice teaching of occupation therapy

Objective To explore the applications of standardized patients teaching method in clinical practice teaching effect for students majoring in rehabilitation therapy in the course of occupation therapy. Methods The 2013 classes of rehabilitation therapy specialty in our college were selected as the subjects of study in the two groups. Group 1 was taught by the traditional teaching method, while group 2 was taught by the standardized patients (SP) teaching method. After learning, we made an analysis of two groups through the form of theory questions, practical operation and the questionnaire to assess the teaching efficacy. Measurement data using two sample mean t-test after SPSS 13.0 software for statistical analysis. Results The scores of skills test and questionnaire in students taught by SP teaching method is significantly higher than those in students taught by traditional teaching method (P<0.05). In the theoretical examination, the SP teaching group outperformed the traditional teaching group, but the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion In occupation therapy application, SP teaching is superior to traditional teaching in improving students’ ability of analysis and judgment, operation skill and communication level, which can be extended to other clinical courses of rehabilitation therapy. Application of standardized patient to evaluate the competency of dentists

Stomatology education and examination should be oriented with the position competence. In order to better meet the requirements of the stomatology education and the development of China's medical and health reform, National Medical Examination Center made relevant research to explore the strategies of applying SP in dentists' clinical competence evaluation. From the research we can conclude: SP has an irreplaceable role in effectively evaluating the various abilities of medical students. As an important ability evaluation method, standardized patients (SP) have the advantages of comprehensiveness, authenticity, systematicness, standardization and operability, which has an irreplaceable role to effectively evaluate the job competence of a dentist. Research development of application of standardized patient in clinical nursing teaching

With the wide application of standardized patient in nursing teaching, its advantages are gradually highlighted, recognized by a majority of nursing scholars. Application of standardized patients in examination of clinical nurses in Department of Joint Surgery

Objective To cultivate and improve specialty clinical nursing skills and level of orthopedic nurses by applying standardized patients in their examination, and to explore effective mode of professionalized and standardized training of orthopedic nurses so as to improve nursing quality of orthopedic departments. Methods 3 nurses were recruited as SP and were trained. Examination range was defined. 20 nurses working in department of joint surgery for more than 6 months were examined with SP as objects. Application effect of SP was evaluated. Results Authenticity scores of SP were (3.97±0.79) points. Examination results of nurses with application of SP: nursing diagnosis (2.38±0.66), problem-solving ability (2.37±0.71), communication skills (2.56±0.72) and clinical skills (2.34±0.61), remaining to be improved. Conclusions Application of SP in professional training of clinical nurses in orthopedic departments can improve practice operational ability of nurses, which shows a new direction in in-job training for clinical nurses. Application of standardized patients in classroom teaching of psychiatry

Objective To evaluate the effect of using standardized patients (SP) in psychiatry class teaching.Methods A standardized patient was used when giving instructions on seven years clinic medicine students of Fudan university,the effect of this teaching model was assessed.Results Totally 96.19％ of students believed that standardized patients teaching model was better than the traditional model.Students in classes of using standardized patients scored higher than students in classes without using standardized patients.Conclusion The standardized patients teaching mode,recognized by almost all students,is believed to help students to better master the knowledge of psychiatry. Application of standardized patients in intensive training of clinical skills for general practice trainees and its effectiveness

Objective To explore application of standardized patients (SPs) in intensive training of clinical competency for general practice trainees. Methods Fifty-three general practice trainees in Shanghai Zhongshan Hospital were enrolled in the study, randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. Control group proceeded in routine clinical rotation, while intervention group accepted intensive training course with SPs as trainers. Three months after intervention, clinical skills of the two groups were compared in a simulated medical environment. Results There was no statistically significant difference in their baseline characteristics between the two groups (P ＞0.05). Competency in history taking, physical examinations,communication with patients, comprehensive consultation, medical record writing as well as case-analysis,improved significantly in intervention group after intervention, as compared to those before it ( P ＜ 0. 01 ),with the highest score of communication skill of 82 ± 10. Although competency of history taking, physical examinations, comprehensive consultation, medical record writing also improved significantly three months later in control group as compared to their baselines (P ＜ 0. 01 ), while no statistically significant difference in their communication skills was found ( P ＞ 0. 05 ). Scores of skills in physician-patient communication,comprehensive consultation as well as medical record analysis were significantly higher in intervention group than those in control one after intervention ( P ＜ 0. 01 ), but no significant difference in physical examinations was found between the two groups ( P ＞ 0. 05 ). Conclusions Application of SP in intensive training course for clinical competency can remarkably improve their competency in interpersonal communication and comprehensive consultation for general practice trainees. Application of standardized patients in consultation skills training for resident general practitioners

Objective To assess standardized patients (SP) in resident general practitioners training for their consultation skills to explore its role in clinical competence training. Methods SP are employed in standardized training for 52 resident general practitioners in Shanghai during May to July 2008 to assess trainees' clinical consultation skills, including medical history taking and physical examinations, as well as clinical competencies of trainers including medical history taking, physical examinations, clinical thinking (diagnosis, differential diagnosis and treatment plans), health education, medical record writing,and reception time management. Feedback and appraisal for their consultation skills were provided by SP later. Problems encountered in trainees' consultation were discussed in group manner with their trainers.And two mouths later, assessment with SPs was undergone again for their consultation skills to compare their scores in consultation skills and percentages of them passing the assessment before and after training. Results Trainees were enrolled in the training aged (28±1 ) years in average ( with a ratio of men to women of 19/33 ). Percentage of trainees passing the assessment by SP for consultation skills was significantly higher after training (88.5%) than that before it (46. 2% ) ( P 0. 05 ). Conclusions Application of SP can effectively enhance consultation skills of the trainees,especially in their medical history taking and physical examinations. Variable clinical experience, inconsistent methods of instruction, and ambiguous evaluation criteria undermine this goal. Standardized patients, trained to consistently portray a wide variety of clinical cases, can help overcome many of these educational problems. This article describes the development and application of standardized patients throughout medical training at The University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, in the freshman interviewing course, the second-year physical diagnosis course, third-year clerkships, a fourth-year final exercise, and residency training. Development of this program is discussed in the context of a broader literature in medical education, and investigation of variables affecting standardized patient and student performance is reported. Future directions for use of standardized patients in monitoring and promoting the development of clinical competence are discussed. (<i>JAMA</i>. 1991;266:1390-1396)
