However, there is a lack of scholarly study about the possible application of social networking sites in identifying geographical areas with an increased likelihood of hate crimes. Hate speech can inflict significant harm upon specific groups of individuals, with certain populations exhibiting heightened vulnerability to the adverse repercussions it entails. The process of automatically gathering and assessing texts generated online can provide challenges for linguistic minority groups whose languages lack the necessary computational resources. The task of automatically detecting hate speech on social media platforms poses a substantial obstacle. This study utilizes artificial intelligence approaches in the fields of text processing and natural language processing to present a methodology for identifying and categorizing hate speech on social networking platforms. The collection of data is initiated by employing various keywords in order to detect occurrences of hate speech on social media sites. The final phase entails the application of machine learning techniques to classify texts into discrete categories. In summary, we evaluate the suggested approaches and analyze the outcomes of the hate speech identification problem through the utilization of both test and training datasets.

Sustaining Formal and Informal English Language Learning through Social Networking Sites (SNS): A Systematic Review (2018–2022)

There has been a gradual shift over the years towards the use of social networking sites (SNS) in formal and informal English language learning which was accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Though there is an abundance of articles dedicated to probing into the in-depth use of SNS in English language learning, a clear correlation between the formal and informal application of SNS in English language learning is still scarce. Therefore, this systematic review aims to exhaustively analyse the recent findings regarding the integration of SNS in English language learning in both formal and informal learning contexts. Two databases were employed, which are the Web of Science (WoS) and Educational Resources Information Centre (ERIC) and thirty articles were extracted for further review. These articles were selectively restricted to a five-year (2018–2022) range and have been screened for any contradiction against the research objectives. As an overview, SNS is favoured for different kinds of applications in teaching and learning purposes due to observed improvements in overall language skills, social interactions, motivation and flexibility. It is proposed for future researchers to focus on a specific target group as well as specific SNS platforms which could help the researchers to minimize discrepancies.

Modelling the Relationship between Linked-In Usage and Social Capital Formation

The main purpose of this study is to test if the use of social networking sites (SNSs) results in any perceived social capital for the users. Putnam’s classification of social capital into bridging and bonding social capital is used for the study. The first objective of the study was to study the demographic and behavioral profile of LinkedIn users. The second objective was to test the model describing the relationship between the constructs intensity of LinkedIn usage and the two types of social capital. A structured questionnaire that included standard scales for measuring the constructs was shared on various social media platforms. The model was analyzed using PLS-SEM in R software. The results confirmed all the three hypothesized relationships and also validated the overall model. This study contributes to the validation as well as extension of social capital theory in SNS. Further, the results throw light on the new applications of SNS by the industry.

INVESTIGATION OF SOCIAL ECONOMIC VARIABLES AS DETERMINANTS OF PREFERRED SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES

This paper sought to investigate the social economic variables as determinants of preferred social networking sites by International Students of Eastern Mediterranean University in North Cyprus. Social Networking Sites (SNS) platforms are gradually replacing the known, traditional means of communication as a result of new improved communication systems.The application of Social Networking Sites in our present generation is inevitable due to its efficiency and capability of connecting the whole globe in a second.These Social Networking Sites have made great contribution towards socio-cultural and economic development thereby re-ordering the world and making it a global village. Two platforms are considered in this research; Facebook and Instagram to know the right prediction based on the demography of users. The research design is survey, while questionnaire was used as the instrument of data collection. Uses and Gratifications Theory is adopted as theoretical framework. Using SPSS for the analysis, the CHAID method with the help of a tree diagram shows that some of the demographic factors are better predictors of social media platforms when it comes to communication with specific places.

Harnessing social media data for pharmacovigilance: a review of current state of the art, challenges and future directions

The ever-increasing supply of information combined with the growing knowledge elicitation capabilities of key emerging technologies presents pharmacovigilance with enormous opportunities. Currently, safety monitoring is expanding its evidence base, moving beyond traditional approaches towards sophisticated methods that can identify possible safety signals from multiple information sources, both structured and unstructured. In this context, health information posted online by patients represents a potentially valuable, yet currently left largely unexploited source of post-market safety data that could supplement data from traditional sources of drug safety information. As the use of social media data for pharmacovigilance is still in its infancy, the present paper explores the state of the art in the application of social data to adverse drug reaction detection; provides a thorough review of existing work in the field, highlighting important research efforts and achievements; and finally, discusses the current challenges and promising avenues for future work. Following a literature review methodology, a critical appraisal was conducted of carefully selected work on the use of social data in post-market surveillance, as presented in the recent scientific literature. Out of a sample of more than 1300 articles, which was the result of the literature search, the final selection of articles was made based on their relevance to the applications of social networking sites (SNS) to pharmacovigilance, and a thorough review of this corpus was completed with a total of 100 articles reviewed. The main contributions of this review include the mapping and systematisation of the current knowledge in the field by drawing comparisons of different approaches, types of social data and of relevant sources currently used in the field, and by developing new classifications of social data sources and taxonomies for social data for use in pharmacovigilance, as well as the identification of key challenges and the extraction of new insights in terms of potential for practical applications and future research directions in the area of pharmacovigilance.

From Learning Management Systems to a Social Learning Environment

Since the advances in information and communication technologies, educational technology has been a priority research topic for academics, technology specialists and educational system developers. The objective of the study in this article is to evaluate the current learning systems and to shed the light on applications of social networking sites in higher education environment. To this end, the authors review the available alternative learning models with a view to achieving the most appropriate comprehensive and integral learning model. This article explores and compares the current advanced web-based educational services. It then demonstrates and discourses on the available Web 2.0 tools and social networking applications that can be used to foster learning activities and informal learning environments.

Research on the application of SNS in university libraries

PurposeThis study aims to analyse the basic status of application of social networking sites (SNSs) in Chinese university libraries and explore the relationship between microblog and the output of scientific research achievements in universities. This study suggests methods for improving the efficiency of SNS use in university libraries and promotes scientific research achievements and social services in universities.Design/methodology/approachOnline survey and statistical analysis were conducted to collect the number and types of SNSs used by 112 libraries in Chinese universities under the “211 project”. This study used microblog as an example and analysed the distribution of SNS use in different types of university libraries. Correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were used to analyse the factors related to microblogs, such as number of followings, followers, posts and published articles.FindingsSNSs changed the information utilization behaviour of users. Survey results show that an increasing number of university libraries are using SNSs. These sites are mainly microblogs and WeChat. The proportion of the number of SNSs applied by comprehensive universities and science and technology universities was higher than that of other types of universities. Results of multiple regression analysis using microblogs showed that the number of followers has a significantly positive effect on the number of published articles of the university.Research limitations/implicationsThis study has three main limitations. First, data collection is incomplete, which easily causes the error of analysis results. Second, the overall status of SNS use in libraries is lacking in accurate understanding, which indicates limitations in terms of the analysis and conclusion. Finally, the research scope was narrow and only studied the situation of libraries using microblogs. Future research should focus on the data collection and sorting, make comparative studies of different periods of data, conduct cultural studies on the user usage perspective and conduct research on the application of different social network platforms in libraries.Practical implicationsThe use of SNSs has brought new challenges and opportunities to university libraries because of rapid development of the internet and the scale of expansion microblogs. Moreover, microblogs have become an important platform of university libraries for self-promotion and marketing. This study proposes methods and measures for promoting the SNS popularity of university libraries, enhancing their content and increasing the role of SNSs in their interaction.Originality/valueStatistical analysis was conducted to analyse the status of SNS use in university libraries and the data of SNS use in different types of universities. Effective measures were offered to address the issues found in the study. The results confirmed that the number of followers has a significantly positive effect on the number of published articles of the university, which could improve the enthusiasm of university libraries in using SNS, enhance the efficiency of information service and strengthen the use awareness of the teachers and students.

Use of Social Network Sites for Communication Among Health Professionals: Systematic Review.

BackgroundAlthough much research has been done investigating the roles of social network sites (SNSs) in linking patients and health professionals, there is a lack of information about their uses, benefits, and limitations in connecting health professions only for professional communication.ObjectiveThis review aimed to examine the utilization of SNSs for communication among health professionals in (1) frontline clinical practice, (2) professional networks, and (3) education and training to identify areas for future health communication research.MethodsThis review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines. A systematic search of the literature published in the last 10 years (January 1, 2007, to March 1, 2017) was performed in March 2017, using the following electronic databases: MEDLINE via OvidSP, EMBASE, CINAHL Complete, and InfoSci-Journals. The searches were conducted using the following defined search terms: “social media” OR “social network” OR “social network site” OR “Facebook” OR “Twitter” OR “Linkedin” OR “Instagram” OR “Weibo” OR “Whatsapp” OR “Telegram” OR “WeChat” AND “health” OR “health profession.”ResultsOf the 6977 papers retrieved, a total of 33 studies were included in this review. They were exploratory in nature, and the majority used surveys (n=25) and interviews (n=6). All retrieved studies stated that SNSs enhanced effective communication and information sharing. SNSs were used for supporting delivering of clinical services, making referrals, and sharing information. They were beneficial to network building and professional collaboration. SNSs were novel tools to enhance educational interactions among peers, students, instructors, and preceptors. The application of SNSs came with restraints in technical knowledge, concerns on data protection, privacy and liability, issues in professionalism, and data protection.ConclusionsSNSs provide platforms facilitating efficient communication, interactions, and connections among health professionals in frontline clinical practice, professional networks, education, and training with limitations identified as technical knowledge, professionalism, and risks of data protection. The evolving use of SNSs necessitates robust research to explore the full potential and the relative effectiveness of SNSs in professional communication.

Application of Social Network Sites in the classrooms for Time Scheduling, Material Sharing and Class Collaboration

Social Networking Sites (SNSs) are basically used for social interaction among individuals and people. Some students often use them basically to meet friend and discuss on trivial things rather than their academic issues. SNSs popularity has made researchers to look at a way to connect advantages of social networks with classroom interactions and collaboration. This could culminate into the infusion of SNSs into the classroom setting. The study aim to identify, analyze, and classify the SNSs used by respondents in order to see how instructors could tailor their uses for academic purposes. The study employed sample survey descriptive design approach targeting higher institution as study population. Both content validity was established through colleague in research; while construct validity was done via KMO (Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin) with 0.762. The reliability index yielded 0.788, Chronback Alpha. Responses to the questionnaire items were collated and analyzed using cross tabulation statistical tool via SPSS. Findings reviewed that SNSs platforms are used by students majorly for fun as well as photo, video display and information sharing, but seldom used for serious academic purposes. The introduction of SNSs into classroom situation offer good advantage and opportunity for students’ academic achievement if instructors could discourage and task students on their better use. The students can be challenged and guided to use SNSs to schedule classroom time, share academic materials and also engage in classroom collaboration.

Investigating Customers' Satisfaction with Brand Pages in Social Networking Sites

The brand page is a popular business application of Social Networking Sites (SNS) that allows companies to create added values for their brand and customers. Studies have shown that satisfied followers of a brand page are more likely to spread positive word of mouth about the brand to connected friends. However, most current research on brand pages is essentially descriptive and lack clear understanding about what factors contribute to customers ‘satisfaction with brand pages. This study relies on the Customer Value Theory, and develops a framework that investigates how multidimensional customer values enhance brand page satisfaction, and how such satisfaction further affects positive word of mouth intention. We use partial least square (PLS), which is a component based structural equation modeling technique, to analyze a survey sample including 375 “followers” of brand pages. The result reveals the significant role of customer value in determining brand page satisfaction and positive word of mouth.

Is Social Networking the future of Project Management?

Communication is the lifeblood of project management, but the increasing geographical dispersion of project teams and stakeholders creates a challenge. Project managers need to exploit a range of tools and methods to communicate effectively with their team, clients and subcontractors. Social networking is ever more widespread, both in the workplace and our personal lives. This paper studies project managers’ use of social networking, in an attempt to determine whether, and if so how, project managers could improve their communications by making effective use of social networking platforms. A literature review identified several potentially useful aspects: user profiles, professional networks, blogs and real time communication. A survey found that 74% (n=150) had already used social networking in the workplace. The most widely used sites were corporate platforms (38%) and LinkedIn (37%). The survey found that the most effective uses for social networking were promoting a project within an organization and for intra-project communication. Interviews suggested that the most useful applications of social networking sites in projects are to improve knowledge management, enable quick communications and to introduce new team members. Face-to-face meetings remain the preferred method of communication where possible. The main limitations are perceived security risks and concerns about time-wasting.

Social media in health professional education: a student perspective on user levels and prospective applications

Social Networking Sites (SNS) have seen exponential growth in recent years. The high utilisation of SNS by tertiary students makes them an attractive tool for educational institutions. This study aims to identify health professional students' use and behaviours with SNS, including students' perspectives on potential applications within health professional curricula. Students enrolled in an undergraduate physiotherapy program were invited to take part in an anonymous, online questionnaire at the end of 2012. The survey consisted of 20 items, gathering demographic data, information on current use of SNS, and opinions regarding the application of SNS into education. Both quantitative and qualitative data were gathered. A total of 142 students, from all years of study, completed the online questionnaire. Only two participants were not current users of social media. Facebook and YouTube had been utilised for educational purposes by 97 and 60 % of participants respectively; 85 % believed that SNS could benefit their learning experience. Only five respondents were not interested in following peers, academic staff, clinicians or professional associations on Facebook. Four key themes emerged: peer collaboration, need for separation between personal and professional realms, complimentary learning and enhanced communication. Students wish to make educational connections via SNS, yet expressed a strong desire to maintain privacy, and a distinction between personal and professional lives. Educational utilisation of SNS may improve communication speed and accessibility. Any educator involvement should be viewed with caution.

The Application of Social Networking Sites (SNSs) in e-Learning and Online Education Environments

In this paper, the authors reviewed the empirical studies on social networking sites (SNSs), especially those focused on adopting SNSs for students’ learning, published in SSCI journals from 2004 to 2013. It was found that the number of articles has significantly increased, particularly after 2009. Among the 76 published papers, most studies were conducted in higher education, as well as in education domain. Furthermore, the qualitative research method was used more in SNSs and e-learning research. The findings in this study may provide reference and directions for future research, and help teachers to consider using SNSs in their online courses.

Improvement Quality of LMS Through Application of Social Networking Sites.

The rapid development of information technology (IT), especially in education, influences all educational institutions to adopt eLearning. E-learning as a primary means of instruction is expanding significantly at the college and university level. However, most of these colleges and universities tend to emphasize on its benefits only. This does not mean that eLearning is without deficiencies. Studentsâ?? interactions, attention and communications are relatively low in the current Learning Management Systems (LMS). LMS is missing the direct relation between learning content and studentsâ?? collaboration and in an inappropriate educators approach towards eLearning. Additionally, collaboration among learners themselves in real time is not supported by LMS. Simultaneously, the growth of social networking sites (SNS) including Facebook, twitter and others are also rising among todayâ??s college students. The main aim of this research is to propose a comprehensive model for eLearning, which might be a roadmap for educational institutions over the whole world to adopt. The focus of this new model will be on incorporation and integration of social networking platform (SNP) with LMS to overcome some of the limitations of LMS in order to improve the quality of educational process to make it much better, attractive and more cooperative.

This paper focuses on the application of SNSs in a learning environment and the impact this could have on academic practices. While undoubtedly, due to the very casual nature of social networking, there are serious concerns over how it could be integrated in a learning environment; the potential positive outcomes are many and varied. As a communication tool, its effectiveness is already manifesting in the millions who use these networks to communicate on a daily basis. So it is conceivable that educators should be able to create a learnscape - an environment for formal and informal learning - that adheres to educational guidelines, but also harnesses the social support system of these on-line communities. This paper examines the risks involved in the creation of this new learning ecology, and explores the challenges faced by both technology experts and teachers in delivering a truly innovative and effective new approach to education.

A Review of Critical Factors for Communicating With Customers on Social Networking Sites

This paper undertakes a systematic review to gain insight into existing studies on the application of Social Network Sites (SNS). Our systematic review of studies from 1995 to 2012 examines the background and trend of research in the area and provides critical factors that organizations should consider for effectively use social networking sites to communicate with their customers. We note a huge growth in the number of academic papers on the topic since 1998. Seventeen factors were identified as a result of review, which shaped two main themes: (i) A customercentric organizational culture, and (ii) SNS Know-How. The findings show that for a successful and effective use of SNSs, and in particular Facebook, a combination of good understanding of SNSs’ tools and capabilities as well as a constant and transparent relationship with customers are essential. Social networking sites and foreign language learning.

Since their emergence around 2005, social networking sites have been growing, potentially transforming our daily lives and even the area of mainstream education. Despite such tremendous influence the SNS services have on our society and education in general, little research has been conducted concerning the application of social networking sites for foreign language learning and teaching purposes. The aim of this study, therefore, is threefold: 1) to provide the introduction of social networking sites and to examine how they have been used for general education; 2) to examine theoretical bases upon which the incorporation of social networking sites into foreign language learning and teaching is based with special reference to the Noticing Hypothesis and the Output Hypothesis; 3) to review some examples of using existing social networking sites for foreign language learning programs. Cases from Facebook, Orkut, Twitter, and Livemocha will be discussed in terms of course design, the nature of tasks employed, and outcomes. Implications from the case reviews will be followed to help teachers integrate some of the features of SNS-based language learning and teaching into their curriculum. Finally, benefits, challenges, and future outlook of this newly-rising area will be discussed.
