Direct Conversion X-ray Detector with Micron-Scale Pixel Pitch for Edge-Illumination and Propagation-Based X-ray Phase-Contrast Imaging.

In this work, we investigate the potential of employing a direct conversion integration mode X-ray detector with micron-scale pixels in two different X-ray phase-contrast imaging (XPCi) configurations, propagation-based (PB) and edge illumination (EI). Both PB-XPCi and EI-XPCi implementations are evaluated through a wave optics model—numerically simulated in MATLAB—and are compared based on their contrast, edge-enhancement, visibility, and dose efficiency characteristics. The EI-XPCi configuration, in general, demonstrates higher performance compared to PB-XPCi, considering a setup with the same X-ray source and detector. However, absorption masks quality (thickness of X-ray absorption material) and environmental vibration effect are two potential challenges for EI-XPCi employing a detector with micron-scale pixels. Simulation results confirm that the behavior of an EI-XPCi system employing a high-resolution detector is susceptible to its absorption masks thickness and misalignment. This work demonstrates the potential and feasibility of employing a high-resolution direct conversion detector for phase-contrast imaging applications where higher dose efficiency, higher contrast images, and a more compact imaging system are of interest.

Proposal of a compact grating-based phase contrast imaging system using an x-ray polycapillary lens

As the grating-based phase contrast imaging has drawn much attention in various scientific fields, there is an increasing demand for a compact imaging system with high efficiency in practical applications. In this paper, a compact imaging configuration by replacing the source grating in a conventional imaging system with a robust, easily-fabricated, and cost-effective x-ray polycapillary lens is proposed and its feasibility is examined using a full-scale Monte Carlo simulation. A typical x-ray spectrum for diagnostic mammography is adopted in the simulation. Under this spectrum, a new polycapillary lens is designed and optimized to meet the requirement of the imaging system. The phantom consists of polyethylene, cortical bone, and adipose tissue spheres of different sizes. An accurate phase image of the phantom is successfully reconstructed using an eight-step phase-stepping method. Excellent agreement of the phase shift and attenuation of the phantom is obtained between the simulation and the theoretical prediction. Compared with a conventional imaging system using a source grating at the same parameters, the imaging efficiency of our proposed system is improved 1.7 times, while its background visibility is reduced from 44.4% to 12.4%. Our results suggest the possibility of developing such a bench-top system for flexible phase contrast imaging applications.

Phase-Contrast MRI: Physics, Techniques, and Clinical Applications.

With phase-contrast imaging, the MRI signal is used to visualize and quantify velocity. This imaging modality relies on phase data, which are intrinsic to all MRI signals. With use of bipolar gradients, degrees of phase shift are encoded and in turn correlated directly with the velocity of protons. The acquisition of diagnostic-quality images requires selection of the correct imaging plane to ensure accurate measurement and selection of the encoding velocity and thus prevent aliasing and achieve the highest signal-to-noise ratio. Multiple applications of phase-contrast imaging are actively used in clinical practice. One of the most common clinical uses is in cardiac valvular flow imaging, at which the data are used to assess the severity of valvular disease and quantify the shunt fraction. In neurologic imaging, phase-contrast imaging can be used to measure the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. This measurement can aid in the diagnosis and direct management of normal pressure hydrocephalus or be used to evaluate the severity of stenosis, such as that in Chiari I malformations. At vascular analysis, phase-contrast imaging can be used to visualize arterial and venous flow, and this application is used most commonly in the brain. Three-dimensional imaging can yield highly detailed flow data in a technique referred to as four-dimensional flow. A more recently identified application is in MR elastography. Shear waves created by using an impulse device can be velocity encoded, and this velocity is directly proportional to the stiffness of the organ, or the shear modulus. This imaging modality is most commonly used in the liver for evaluation of cirrhosis and steatosis, although research on the assessment of other organs is being performed. Phase-contrast imaging is an important tool in the arsenal of MRI examinations and has many applications. Proper use of phase-contrast imaging requires an understanding of the many practical and technical factors and unique physics principles underlying the technique.©RSNA, 2020.

Investigation of the application of phase contrast imaging using a point X-ray source to industrial non-destructive testing

X-Tek Systems, a division of Nikon Metrology UK, designs, develops and manufactures microfocus X-ray radiography and computed tomography systems for industrial non-destructive testing. The range of X-ray acceleration voltages of its current standard products is 130-450 kV. It is widely known that X-ray images can be created using phase contrast formed by the natural propagation of X-rays. Simulation of the natural propagation of X-rays through a cylindrical test sample predicted a small contrast peak at the boundary between the cylinder material and air. Comparison data were obtained using an X-ray source with acceleration voltage above 100 kV. The simulation results correlated well with the experimental data. A further practical example (a 'magic mirror' amulet from an old Japanese shrine) is introduced and discussed. In this specimen, we detected intensity variation including the effect of phase contrast in the operating region above 100 kV. In summary, natural propagation phase contrast was observed in radiographic images from a standard point X-ray source with acceleration voltages exceeding 100 kV.

Evaluation of phase-contrast CT of breast tissue at conventional X-ray sources – presentation of selected findings

BackgroundGrating-based phase contrast computed tomography (PC-CT) at synchrotron radiation sources has been shown to provide improved visualization of breast tumors. However, broad clinical application of phase-contrast imaging will likely depend on transferring the technology to standard polychromatic X-ray sources. On the basis of selected findings, we demonstrate the potential of grating-based PC-CT using a conventional X-ray source. Materials and MethodsGrating-based PC-CT of two ex-vivo formalin fixed breast specimens containing lobular carcinoma was conducted using a Talbot Lau interferometer run at a polychromatic X-ray source of 40kVp. Phase-contrast and absorption-based 3D-datasets of both specimens were simultaneously recorded. Radiological images were manually matched with corresponding histological sections. The visualization of selected histological findings in phase contrast was compared to absorption contrast. ResultsGrating-based PC-CT was able to depict the 3-dimensional structure of dilated ducts and high phase contrast was found as a correlate to thickened fibrous ductal walls. Differences in contrast between fibrous and less fibrous breast tissue were observed in phase- but not in absorption-contrast images. Furthermore, regions of low phase contrast correlated with the extension of compact tumor components. ConclusionsOn the basis of selected findings, we show that grating-based PC-CT at a polychromatic X-ray source provides complementary information to conventional absorption contrast; albeit at lower spatial resolution than synchrotron-based imaging.

A new method to retrieve phase information for equiangular fan beam differential phase contrast computed tomography

Sample radiation damage is one of the main drawbacks limiting applications of the x-ray phase-contrast imaging method. Recently, for x-ray grating-based phase contrast imaging, the reverse projection (RP) method has been proposed by Zhu et al. [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 107, 13576-13581 (2010)]. Compared to the conventional phase stepping technique, the RP method allows a strong reduction of the exposure time and minimization of the errors induced by mechanical vibrations. However, so far, it has only been considered for parallel beam illumination, typical of a synchrotron radiation source. In this paper, a generalization of the RP method from parallel beam geometry to fan beam geometry was presented and discussed. Within parallel beam geometry, the RP method utilizes the conjugate characteristic between reverse projection images. Nevertheless, this characteristic is not directly satisfied for fan beam geometry. In this study, a phantom composed of known materials was constructed and the projection images of the phantom were calculated in a fan beam geometry. By considering single ray, the conjugate images of the projection images were derived from the projection dataset. After that, using the modified RP method the authors retrieved phase and absorption information from paired images. Extracted phase and absorption information of the phantom were in good agreement with theoretical values. Additionally, the slice reconstruction was performed and the results turned out to be in the authors' expectation. Theoretical calculations and numerical simulations confirm both feasibility and validity of the RP method under fan beam illumination. Because this method is simple, fast, and releases a relatively low dose, the authors believe that this research is very useful for the x-ray phase contrast imaging applications in clinical diagnosis, bioresearch, and industrial nondestructive testing.

Glancing angle Talbot-Lau grating interferometers for phase contrast imaging at high x-ray energy.

A Talbot-Lau interferometer is demonstrated using micro-periodic gratings inclined at a glancing angle along the light propagation direction. Due to the increase in the effective thickness of the absorption gratings, the device enables differential phase contrast imaging at high x-ray energy, with improved fringe visibility (contrast). For instance, at 28° glancing angle, we obtain up to ∼35% overall interferometer contrast with a spectrum having ∼43 keV mean energy, suitable for medical applications. In addition, glancing angle interferometers could provide high contrast at energies above 100 keV, enabling industrial and security applications of phase contrast imaging.

Two-Dimensional X-Ray Beam Phase Sensing

We present a new method to analyze quantitatively the wave front of a partially coherent x-ray beam. The technique is based on the use of two-dimensional speckle patterns combined with digital image correlation algorithms and offers a pixel size resolution, a high accuracy, and a reduced sensitivity to mechanical vibrations thanks to a very simple setup. The requirements on transverse and longitudinal coherence are also low. Finally, we show how the method can be used for phase contrast imaging applications by a single sample exposure process.

The application of phase contrast imaging to ICF multi-shell capsule diagnosis

With the development of the research on inertial confinement fusion (ICF), there is needed a diagnostic technique for low Z materials.The phase contrast imaging, which relies on gradients in the refractive index and wave interference, is proposed to characterize the typical ICF (inertial confinement fusion) capsule shell. In our work it is indicated that the phase contrast imaging obtained with a micro-focus X-ray source provides complementary information about the capsule shell with high resolution 2 upm, and has advantages of absorb imaging. Such a capsule shell diagnostic technique is very useful for ICF diagnoses. Besides, we propose an approach to obtaining of the optimum contrast and spatial resolution in phase contrast imaging. It is a guidance in obtaining an excellent result in phase contrast imaging experiment, and can be widely used in biomedicine, materials science.

The application of phase contrast imaging to implosion capsule diagnose in high energy density physics environment

The variation of multi-layer shell capsule in implosion process is the most important part of inertial confinement fusion. Phase contrast imaging which relies on gradients of the refractive index and wave interference is proposed to characterize the typical implosion capsule. The experiments are performed on the Shenguang Ⅱ laser facility. The point-like X-ray source at 4.75 keV can be efficiently produced from laser interactions with Ti target and observed by pinhole- point backlight technique. The phase contrast images obtained with point-like X-ray source provide complementary information about the multi-layer shell capsule, and the spatial resolution is better than 10 μm. The X-ray phase contrast imaging shows more detailed features than absorb imaging, and good agreement with one-dimensional numerical simulations.

A reconstruction method for equidistant fan beam differential phase contrast computed tomography

We report a reconstruction method, called a back-projection filtered (BPF) algorithm, for fan beam differential phase contrast computed tomography (DPC-CT) with equidistant geometrical configuration. This work comprises a numerical study of the algorithm and its experimental verification with a three-grating interferometer and an x-ray tube source. The numerical simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can deal with several classes of truncated datasets. It could be of interest in future medical phase contrast imaging applications.

Single shot phase contrast imaging using laser-produced Betatron x-ray beams

Development of x-ray phase contrast imaging applications with a laboratory scale source have been limited by the long exposure time needed to obtain one image. We demonstrate, using the Betatron x-ray radiation produced when electrons are accelerated and wiggled in the laser-wakefield cavity, that a high-quality phase contrast image of a complex object (here, a bee), located in air, can be obtained with a single laser shot. The Betatron x-ray source used in this proof of principle experiment has a source diameter of 1.7 μm and produces a synchrotron spectrum with critical energy E(c)=12.3±2.5 keV and 10⁹ photons per shot in the whole spectrum.

Hard x-ray phase contrast imaging using single absorption grating and hybrid semiconductor pixel detector

A method for x-ray phase contrast imaging is introduced in which only one absorption grating and a microfocus x-ray source in a tabletop setup are used. The method is based on precise subpixel position determination of the x-ray pattern projected by the grating directly from the pattern image. For retrieval of the phase gradient and absorption image (both images obtained from one exposure), it is necessary to measure only one projection of the investigated object. Thus, our method is greatly simplified compared with the phase-stepping method and our method can significantly reduce the time-consuming scanning and possibly the unnecessary dose. Furthermore, the technique works with a fully polychromatic spectrum and gives ample variability in object magnification. Consequently, the approach can open the way to further widespread application of phase contrast imaging, e.g., into clinical practice. The experimental results on a simple testing object as well as on complex biological samples are presented.

Application of phase-contrast imaging with synchrotron radiation hard X-ray in repair of traumatic femoral defect

Objective To compare the effectiveness of nano-hydroxyapatite/collagen (nHAC)and autologous mesenchymal stem cells (AMSCs) for the repair of femoral defect in a rabbit model with femoral defect under the monitoring of the synchrotron radiation hard X-ray. Methods The rabbit models of traumatic bone defect were established and completely randomized into three groups. The femoral defects filled with nothing were used as control group (Group A) , the femoral defects filled with nHAC as Group B and the femoral defects filled with nHAC + AMSCs as Group C. Phase-contrast imaging with synchrotron radiation hard X-ray was applied to detect the degradation and repair process of each group at postoperative weeks 4, 8 and 12, respectively. Results Phase-contrast imaging with synchrotron radiation hard X-ray could display the reparative process. Four weeks after operation, there was collapse in some defect areas in Group A, and the degradation of nHAC and new bone formation were observed in Groups B and C. Eight weeks after operation, fibrous tissues were observed in the defect area in Group A, while osteogenesis and nHAC degradation were more obvious in Groups B and C. Twelve weeks after operation, the defect areas were still unhealed and were substituted by fibrous tissues in Group A, tissue densities of defect areas in Group C were identical with periphery areas, and trabecular bones were formed in Group C. There were statistical differences in the osteogenesis between Group A and Groups B and C,with Group C the best. Conclusion Phase-contrast imaging with synchrotron X-ray can detect the reparative process at a micro-level and plays an important role in the development of tissue engineering. Phase contrast medical imaging with compact X-ray sources at the Munich-Centre for Advance Photonics (MAP)

In this paper, the excellence cluster “Munich-Centre for Advance Photonics” (MAP) is presented. One of the aims of the project is the development of innovative X-ray-based diagnostics imaging techniques to be implemented at an ultra-compact high-energy and high-brilliance X-ray source. The basis of the project and the developments towards the clinical application of phase contrast imaging applied to mammography and cartilage studies will be presented and discussed.

Phase contrast imaging simulation and measurements using polychromatic sources with small source-object distances

Phase contrast imaging is a technique widely used in synchrotron facilities for nondestructive analysis. Such technique can also be implemented through microfocus x-ray tube systems. Recently, a relatively new type of compact, quasimonochromatic x-ray sources based on Compton backscattering has been proposed for phase contrast imaging applications. In order to plan a phase contrast imaging system setup, to evaluate the system performance and to choose the experimental parameters that optimize the image quality, it is important to have reliable software for phase contrast imaging simulation. Several software tools have been developed and tested against experimental measurements at synchrotron facilities devoted to phase contrast imaging. However, many approximations that are valid in such conditions (e.g., large source-object distance, small transverse size of the object, plane wave approximation, monochromatic beam, and Gaussian-shaped source focal spot) are not generally suitable for x-ray tubes and other compact systems. In this work we describe a general method for the simulation of phase contrast imaging using polychromatic sources based on a spherical wave description of the beam and on a double-Gaussian model of the source focal spot, we discuss the validity of some possible approximations, and we test the simulations against experimental measurements using a microfocus x-ray tube on three types of polymers (nylon, poly-ethylene-terephthalate, and poly-methyl-methacrylate) at varying source-object distance. It will be shown that, as long as all experimental conditions are described accurately in the simulations, the described method yields results that are in good agreement with experimental measurements.

Characterisation of phase evolution under load by means of phase contrast imaging using synchrotron radiation

Abstract Phase contrast radiography (PCR) is a quite novel technique that is collecting increasing attention due to the possibility to obtain image information in presence of very small differences in the densities of the materials under analysis. Phase contrast imaging (PCI) has some specific advantage when compared with common microscopic techniques: (a) no special preparation of the sample is needed (b) the simultaneously investigated area is very large and (c) it allows the setting up of complex experimental apparatus. The results here presented are a good evidence of these three advantages. In this paper, we report on the application of phase contrast imaging in the study of the phase evolution during pseudoelastic transformation in the NiTiCu shape memory alloys (SMAs). The investigation was undertaken with the aim to identify some modification of the structure taking place at the end of the transformation plateau in the pseudoelastic behaviour of the alloy.

High energy X-ray phase contrast microscopy using a circular Bragg-Fresnel lens

High energy X-ray phase contrast microscopy based on Bragg-Fresnel optics with submicrometer resolution was demonstrated. An X-ray image of a free-standing gold grid was observed at 9.5 keV using a circular Bragg-Fresnel lens in backscattering geometry. The fine 0.5 μm gold grid was clearly seen not only in the open areas of the supporting mesh but also underneath the 3 μm bars. A contrast of more than 20% was measured. The theory of the image formation in partially coherent X-rays on a basis of Hopkins formula is considered. The application of phase contrast imaging for low-density materials is discussed.
