Application of parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) to two girls with behavioral problems

Parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) is a form of behavioral therapy to deal with various behavioral problems in children. It works directly with parents and their home interactions with their children. In this paper the application of PCIT to a seven-year-old girl with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and her three-year-old sister with behavioral problems is described. A single-case A-B design with concurrent baseline was used. The positive behaviors and problems were assessed for both young girls using self-monitoring and parent video recordings during playtime and home interactions. The treatment was developed in 12 sessions for 3 months. A progressive evolution was observed in both girls’ baseline and in pre- and post-treatment measures of the problem behaviors. Finally, there was a reduction of stress and an increase in the self-efficacy of the parents’ abilities.

Tailoring Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) for Older Children: A Case Study

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based intervention designed for families of 2- to 6-year-old children with disruptive behavior disorders. This article illustrates the application of PCIT in a 10-year-old boy with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Both parents and the patient attended PCIT sessions. The course of therapy included minor changes to the PCIT protocol. After 13 PCIT sessions, the patient displayed disruptive behaviors within normal limits, and 12 months later he no longer met diagnostic criteria for ODD. Results remained stable at a 17-month follow-up assessment. This case study suggests that the use of PCIT in families of children with ODD markedly older than the recommended age range might be a promising approach for improving family functioning and reducing behavior problems. Further research with larger samples of older children with ODD is needed to replicate and elaborate the findings of this case study.

Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT): Child Well-Being Through an Effective Parenting Intervention

Parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) is a family-centered therapeutic approach designed for families with children who are experiencing a broad range of behavioural, emotional and family problems. Proposed by Eyberg et al in 1995 emphasizes on improving the quality of the parent-child relationship and changing parent-child interaction patterns. The goals of PCIT are to improve the quality of the parent-child relationship and, both child and family functioning; decrease the child behavior problems with an increase in prosocial behaviors; improve parenting skills, including positive discipline and reduce parenting stress. The characteristic feature of this approach is the use of live coaching and the treatment of both parent and child together. PCIT has rich theoretical background and it consists of two components: child directed interaction and parent directed interaction. Though it has certain contraindications and limitations like very young children, parental psychological problems or lack of contact with the child, and abusive parents, it is beneficial to manage several behaviour and relationship problems of children and parents. Application of PCIT are also detailed in the article.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy With a Spanish-Speaking Family

There is relatively little information on the treatment effectiveness of child behavior-management programs with Spanish-speaking populations. Though there are several empirically supported treatments available in English, research on the applicability of these programs in Spanish is virtually nonexistent. This single-case study discusses the application of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) with a Spanish-speaking mother-child dyad to address the child’'s externalizing behavior problems. Both observational and parent self-report data are presented. Results suggest that PCIT was effective in increasing positive parent behaviors, decreasing child behavior problems, and reducing parental stress level. Implications for future clinical and research work with Spanish-speaking families are discussed.

Clinical issues in parent-child interaction therapy

The scientist-practitioner model depends on the interplay of research and clinical work. Just as research informs and improves clinical practice, clinical practice leads to the generation of important and practical research questions. The purpose of this article is to describe the clinical application of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), detailing its essential clinical components and presenting a case example that illustrates the application of PCIT to the treatment of child physical abuse. Recommendations for common implementation difficulties are presented through the case example.
