Harvest Anticipation, Yield and Economic Feasibility of Wheat by Application of Non-Selective Herbicides

The present work aims to evaluate the possibility of anticipating the wheat harvest by the application of non-selective herbicides in the pre-harvest conditions, thereby providing productive and economic viability. In total, 13 treatments were executed, which includes the spraying of different herbicide combinations (glufosinate-ammonium, glyphosate, and paraquat) in the phenological stages (Z-83, Z-85, Z-87, Z-92), and treatments without application of herbicides. Further, the treatment step was followed by providing different harvest conditions such as (i) glufosinate-ammonium: 9.5 and 8.8 days, (ii) glyphosate: 11.2 and 10.9 days, and (iii) paraquat: 7.9 and 8.5, where the first numerical value corresponds to number of days for the year 2016 followed by 2017. A mean reduction in seed yield of 4.6 % (BRS Parrudo) and 25.4 % (TBIO Sinuelo) was observed upon application of herbicides in the first two phenological stages. Additionally, an economic loss reaching up to R$ 2512 ha-1, was demonstrated. Therefore, the application of the non-selective herbicides glufosinate-ammonium and paraquat in the pre-harvest results in wheat phytointoxication, however, promoting harvest anticipation in 4.8 and 5.3 days, respectively.

Preplant and Residual Herbicide Application Timings for Weed Control in No-Till Soybean

AbstractTimely herbicide applications for no-till soybean can be challenging given the diverse communities of both winter and summer annual weeds that are often present. Research was conducted to compare various approaches for nonselective and preplant weed control for no-till soybean. Nonselective herbicide application timings of fall (with and without a residual herbicide) followed by early-spring (4 wk before planting), late-spring (1 to 2 wk before planting), or sequential-spring applications (4 wk before planting and at planting) were compared. Spring applications also included a residual herbicide. For consistent control of winter annual weeds, two herbicide applications were needed, either a fall application followed by a spring application or sequential-spring applications. When a fall herbicide application did not include a residual herbicide, greater winter annual weed control resulted from early- or sequential-spring treatments. However, application timings that effectively controlled winter annual weeds did not effectively control summer annual weeds that have a prolonged emergence period. Palmer amaranth and large crabgrass control at 4 wk after planting was better when the spring residual treatment (chlorimuron plus metribuzin) was applied 1 to 2 wk before planting or at planting, compared with 4 wk before planting. Results indicate that in order to optimize control, herbicide application programs in soybean should coincide with seasonal growth cycles of winter and summer annual weeds.

Application of Non-Selective Herbicides in the Pre-Harvest of Wheat Damages Seed Quality

Pre-harvest desiccation in order to minimize the time of exposure to abiotic factors after physiological maturity is a practice used in the production of quality seeds. The aim of this work was to evaluate the physical, physiological and sanitary quality of wheat seeds from plants that received non-selective herbicide application at pre-harvest. For this, the treatments were applied on pre-harvest culture. A completely randomized design was applied. We use the herbicides (glufosinate-ammonium, glyphosate and paraquat), phenological stages of herbicide application (Z-83, Z-85, Z-87, Z-92) and additional treatment (without application). The routine tests that express the physical, physiological and sanitary integrity of seeds were evaluated. For herbicide treatments, there was an 8% and 26% reduction in germination under laboratory conditions for BRS Parrudo and Sinuelo, respectively. Soil emergence was 14% higher for the control treatment, not statistically different for the Z-87 and Z-92 stages and also for the herbicides glufosinate-ammonium and glyphosate for both cultivars. The application of non-selective herbicides on wheat pre-harvest impairs the physical and physiological quality and promotes faster deterioration. Vigor is reduced under stress conditions by cold test and accelerated aging. There is no influence on seed sanity.

Intensive cropping systems select for greater seed dormancy and increased herbicide resistance levels in Lolium rigidum (annual ryegrass).

Lolium rigidum (annual ryegrass) is a widespread annual crop weed that has evolved high levels of resistance to selective herbicides. Anecdotal evidence suggests that intensive cropping also leads to higher seed dormancy in L. rigidum. This was quantified by measuring dormancy levels in L. rigidum populations collected from paired sites (one with nil to low cropping intensity, the other intensively cropped) located throughout the Western Australian grain belt. Populations from non-cropped fields or those with low cropping intensity showed higher and faster germination than populations from fields with a medium- or high-intensity cropping regime. Resistance to selective herbicides was also higher in the medium- and high-intensity cropping fields than in the low-intensity cropping fields. High-intensity cropping systems are likely to impose greater selection pressures for seed dormancy and selective herbicide resistance, because late-emerging seedlings avoid preplanting weed control practices (tillage and non-selective herbicide application) but are exposed to selective in-crop herbicides.

Ecología Austral 24:135-144 (2014)Long-term experiences are generally rare in studies on management of invasive species, and they are the key to understand the effectiveness of controls. In this work, we revisited a field experiment set seven years ago to evaluate the effects of four control measures (pasture sown + fertilizer, fertilizer and selective/non-selective herbicide applications) under two different grazing conditions (grazed and ungrazed) in rangelands from northern grasslands of Tierra del Fuego Island in Southern Patagonia (Argentina) invaded by the exotic weed Hieracium pilosella L. (mouse-ear hawkweed, Asteraceae). To evaluate the effects of the treatments applied seven years ago, we measured the cover of the invasive species, the dominant growth forms, and bare soil. The effects of fertilization depended on the grazing conditions; H. pilosella cover decreased by more than 82% and it was replaced by naturalized herbs with high forage value in the ungrazed-fertilized plots, while it exhibited no decrease in the grazed-fertilized plots after seven years since the application. Both herbicides (selective and non-selective) reduced H. pilosella cover by ca. 90% independently of grazing. However, the non-selective herbicide application resulted in an increase in bare soil cover (15%) independently of grazing. In contrast, the selective broadleaf herbicide application increased the graminoids cover up to a 60% and the bare soil cover was below the 2%. According with the results, we suggest a control strategy based on the local application of selective herbicides and/or fertilizers in conjunction with a transient ban on sheep grazing because it is able to reduce the invader’s cover at midterm and local scale.

Operational planning of herbicide-based weed management

• A conceptual operational planning model for weed control is proposed. • The model selects herbicides to be applied and determines their application times. • The objective is to maximize the economic benefit. • The environmental impact is quantified as an external cost. • Sensitivity analysis shows that the model solutions are robust. Weeds cause crop yield loss due to competition, interfere with agricultural activities and reduce grain quality due to seed contamination. Among the numerous methods for weed control, the use of herbicides is the most common practice. Nowadays, the optimization of herbicide application is pursued to reduce the environmental impact, delay the appearance of herbicide-resistant weed populations, and improve the cost/benefit ratio of the agronomic business. This work proposes an operational planning model, aimed at calculating the optimal application times of herbicides in no-tillage systems within a growing season in order to maximize the economic benefit of the activity while rationalizing the intensity of the applications with respect to expert-knowledge-based recommendations. The model can decide on herbicide applications on a daily basis, consistent with timing of agricultural activities, and provides an explicit quantification of the environmental impact as an external cost. The proposed approach was tested on a winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum )–wild oat ( Avena fatua ) system, typical of the semiarid region of Argentina. In all the studied scenarios at least two pre-sowing applications of non-selective herbicides were required to effectively control early emerging weed seedlings. Additional pre-sowing and post-emergence applications were also advised in cases when competitive pressure was significant.

Herbicide Application Strategies for the Control of Rigid Ryegrass (Lolium rigidum) in Wide-Row Faba Bean (Vicia faba) in Southern Australia

Two field experiments were undertaken at Roseworthy, South Australia from 2006 to 2007 to evaluate the performance of herbicide application strategies for the control of herbicide-resistant rigid ryegrass in faba bean grown in wide rows (WR). The standard farmer practice of applying postsowing PRE (PSPE) simazine followed by POST clethodim to faba bean grown in WR provided consistent and high levels of rigid ryegrass control (≥ 96%) and caused a large reduction (P < 0.05) in spike production (≤ 20 spikes m−2) as compared with nontreated control (560 to 722 spikes m−2). Furthermore, this herbicide combination resulted in greatest yield benefits for WR faba bean (723 to 1,046 kg ha−1). Although PSPE propyzamide used in combination with shielded interrow applications of glyphosate or paraquat provided high levels of rigid ryegrass control (≥ 93%), these treatments were unable to reduce ryegrass spike density within the crop row (20 to 54 spikes m−2) to levels acceptable for continued cropping. Furthermore, a yield reduction (13 to 29%) was observed for faba bean in treatments with shielded application of nonselective herbicides and could be related to spray drift onto lower leaves. These findings highlight that shielded interrow spraying in WR faba bean could play an important role in the management of rigid ryegrass in southern Australia. However, timing of shielded interrow applications on weed control, crop safety, and issues concerning integration with more effective early-season control strategies require attention.

Recruitment limitation of native species in invaded coastal dune communities

Recruitment limitation may limit the ability of sites to regenerate after disturbances such as weed invasion and weed management. We investigated seed bank constraints and dispersal limitation in coastal dune communities on the east coast of Australia. The ability of sites to regenerate naturally following weed removal was assessed in coastal dune communities invaded by the invasive alien, bitou bush (Chrysanthemoides monilifera subsp. rotundata). To investigate recruitment limitation, seed banks and vegetation of invaded, native, intensively managed (selective application of herbicide and some re-vegetation) and extensively managed (large-scale, non-selective herbicide application) sites were compared. We investigated the dispersal mechanisms of species in the seed bank and vegetation to determine if communities might be dispersal-limited, i.e. contain significant numbers of species with only short-distance dispersal capabilities. Species richness and composition of soil seed banks differed from the vegetation in foredunes and hinddunes. Invasion depleted seed banks further. About half of the species had short-distance dispersal mechanisms indicating the potential for dispersal limitation. Secondary weed invasion following management was evident although alien species occurred in both seed banks and vegetation. Our results indicated that coastal dune communities suffer recruitment limitation. Native, managed and invaded dune communities appear to be both seed bank and dispersal-limited although management and invasion exacerbates recruitment. Regeneration of coastal dune communities will require active reintroduction of species, particularly those with short-distance dispersal mechanisms.

Delayed pasture germination allows improved rigid ryegrass ( Lolium rigidum) control through grazing and broad-spectrum herbicide application

Eastern star clover ( Trifolium dasyurum C. Presl.) is a new pasture legume developed for use in short phases between extended cropping sequences in Western Australian dryland agriculture. Its delayed germination provides an opportunity to obtain almost complete control of the highly-competitive crop weed rigid ryegrass ( Lolium rigidum Gaudin) through non-selective herbicide application and/or grazing. Given the recent development of a commercial cultivar of eastern star clover (cv. AGWEST ® Sothis), a complex simulation model is used to evaluate its potential profitability relative to continuous-cropping and rotations employing a popular pasture, French serradella ( Ornithopus sativus Brot. cv. Cadiz). The profitability of those sequences containing eastern star clover is robust to high initial ryegrass populations and increasing severity of herbicide resistance. Moreover, the weed control benefits accruing to this pasture's delayed germination are of sufficient magnitude to offset the low establishment cost and higher biomass production of French serradella. This highlights the value of eastern star clover to producers in the Western Australian wheatbelt and offers an additional trait that plant breeders and selectors can exploit when seeking to expand weed control options in land-use sequences.

Japanese Stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum) Management for Restoration of Native Plant Communities

Japanese stiltgrass is a nonnative invasive grass occupying a range of habitats in the eastern United States. Conventional management recommendations include hand-removal, mowing, or a nonselective herbicide application in autumn prior to flowering. However, no study has directly compared the ecological impacts of long-term management strategies on Japanese stiltgrass populations or recruitment and establishment of native flora. An experiment was initiated in 2002 and continued for three growing seasons in mixed pine-hardwood forests in central North Carolina. Conventional treatments included hand-removal, mowing, or an application of glyphosate (1.1 kg ai/ha) once in autumn, and selective removal by hand or fenoxaprop-P (0.19 kg ai/ha) season-long as needed. All treatments were compared to nontreated plots. Percent vegetation cover by species was recorded twice annually. Data were aggregated into five classes; Japanese stiltgrass, other exotic plants, native forbs, native monocots, and native woody plants. The soil seed bank of all species was estimated annually by extracting soil cores and documenting seedling emergence. All Japanese stiltgrass management treatments significantly reduced Japanese stiltgrass cover and seed bank over time compared to no management. However, recruitment and reestablishment of native plants and overall species richness were greater with selective Japanese stiltgrass management treatments including both hand-removal and fenoxaprop-P. Relative cover of other exotic plants decreased 2% to 49% after 3 yr with all Japanese stiltgrass management treatments except season-long hand-removal, which increased relative cover of other exotic plants 51%.Nomenclature: Japanese stiltgrass, Microstegium vimineum (Trin.) Management Strategies for Herbicide-resistant Weed Populations in Australian Dryland Crop Production Systems

In most world crop-production areas, the evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds is becoming a major issue. This problem has become most severe across the Australian dryland crop-production region, where herbicide-resistant weed populations are threatening crop-production profitability and sustainability across 20 million ha. Widespread herbicide resistance has forced changes in agronomic and herbicide practices. This problem is particularly evident in Western Australia, where the frequency and distribution of herbicide-resistant weed populations appear to be greater than anywhere else in the world. Judicious use of herbicide mixtures and rotations can reduce the selection pressure for evolved resistance to any one specific herbicide. Additionally, agronomic practices, such as the double knockdown (preseeding sequential application of nonselective herbicides), increased seeding rates, and targeting of weed seed production to prevent seedbank inputs, are needed to reduce the selection pressure on all herbicides by reducing in-crop weed populations. However, these techniques are not without problems or limitations, and their weed control efficacy is inferior to that of most in-crop selective herbicides. The adoption by Australian farmers of the current limited technology is clear evidence of the value placed on the use of these alternate crop weed-control practices. The continued evolution of herbicide resistance more than justifies continuing research and development efforts to produce integrated strategies and smarter herbicide use so as to achieve sustainable weed management.

Persian Darnel (Lolium persicum) Fecundity Response to Spring Wheat, Canola, and Sunflower Interference

Persian darnel control options are limited and unmanaged populations can cause substantial crop yield loss. Integrating crop diversification and higher crop seeding rates into a cropping system might improve Persian darnel management. Field experiments were conducted to determine the effect of different crops and increased crop seeding rates on Persian darnel fecundity. Persian darnel produced up to 2,800 seeds per plant and 53,000 seeds/m2when grown without competition. Increasing crop density reduced Persian darnel tillers per plant, seed weight, and fecundity. Increasing crop density reduced Persian darnel fecundity 0.4 to 0.2% per spring wheat plant, 0.6 to 0.1% per canola plant, and 16 to 8% per sunflower plant. Persian darnel fecundity was impacted the greatest by reduced weed seedling establishment, which was caused by crop competition and seeding sunflower late in the spring preceded by a nonselective herbicide application. Results indicated delaying the seeding of spring crops or including a late-seeded warm season crop, like sunflower or safflower, in the cropping system is an effective weed management tool for reducing Persian darnel fecundity.

Late-season non-selective herbicide application reduces Lolium rigidum seed numbers, seed viability, and seedling fitness

Experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of Lolium rigidum (annual ryegrass) seed developmental stage and application rate of glyphosate and SpraySeed (paraquat 135 g/L + diquat 115 g/L) on the number, germinability, and fitness of seeds produced. Glyphosate (450 g/L) was most effective when applied at a rate of 0.5–1 L/ha during heading and anthesis, reducing the number of filled seeds produced compared with unsprayed plants. Application post-anthesis, when seeds were at the milk to soft dough stage, was less effective. SpraySeed was most effective when applied post-anthesis, during the milk and early dough stages of seed development at a rate of 0.5–1 L/ha, resulting in the production of few viable seeds. Although some filled seeds were produced, most of the seeds were dead. Application during anthesis or once the seeds reached soft dough stage was less effective. For both herbicides, those seeds that were capable of germinating were smaller and had slower radicle and coleoptile growth, resulting in slower early seedling growth and reduced biomass production within the first month of growth. Additionally, glyphosate application reduced the proportion of seeds exhibiting dormancy. The anticipated reduction in seed competitive ability and altered emergence timing resulting from late-season herbicide application, even when application timing is not optimal, could be exploited to reduce the likelihood of successful L. rigidum establishment in the following season.

Nitrogen dynamics during till and no-till pasture restoration sequences in Rondônia, Brazil

The clearing of tropical rain forest in the Amazon basin has created large areas of cattle pasture that are now declining in productivity. Practices adopted by ranchers to restore productivity to degraded pastures have the potential to alter soil N availability and gaseous N losses from soils. We examined how soil inorganic N pools, net N mineralization and net nitrification rates, nitrification potential and NO and N2O emissions from soils of a degraded pasture responded to the following restoration treatments: (1) soil tillage followed by replanting of grass and fertilization, (2) no-till application of non-selective herbicide, planting of rice, harvest followed by no-till replanting of grass and fertilization, and (3) the same no-till sequence with soybeans instead of rice. Tillage increased soil NH4+ and NO3? pools but NH4+ and NO3? pools remained relatively constant in the control and no-till treatments. Cumulative rates of net N mineralization and net nitrification during the first 6 months after treatment varied widely but were hightest in the tilled treatment. Emissions of NO and N2O fluxes increased with tillage and with N fertilization. There were no clear relationships among rates of N fertilizer application, net N mineralization, net nitrification, NO, N2O and total N oxide emissions. Our results indicate that pasture restoration sequences involving tilling and fertilizing will increase emissions of N oxides, but the magnitude of the increase is likely to differ based on timing of fertilizer application relative to the presence of plants and the magnitude of plant N demand. Emissions of N oxides appear to be decreased by the use of restoration sequences that minimize reductions in pasture grass cover.

Evaluating Drift Control Agents to Reduce Short Distance Movement and Effect on Herbicide Performance1

Spray drift to unintended areas is more of a concern as applications of nonselective herbicides associated with herbicide-resistant crops and the proximity of residential land to agricultural land increase. This research evaluated the benefit of three commercial drift control agents for effectiveness in reducing drift in 19 to 24 km/h wind and their potential effect on weed control. The drift control agents were added to a spray mixture of glyphosate at 0.8 kg ae/ha applied in 140 L/ ha and applied with either flat-fan or flood nozzles. None of the drift control agents reduced drift compared with the spray mixture without drift control agent over a distance of 6 m, as measured by water-sensitive cards or grain sorghum bioassay, regardless of nozzle type used. Remote Sensing to Detect Herbicide Drift on Crops

Glyphosate and paraquat herbicide drift injury to crops may substantially reduce growth or yield. Determining the type and degree of injury is of importance to a producer. This research was conducted to determine whether remote sensing could be used to identify and quantify herbicide injury to crops. Soybean and corn plants were grown in 3.8-L pots to the five- to seven-leaf stage, at which time, applications of nonselective herbicides were made. Visual injury estimates were made, and hyperspectral reflectance data were recorded 1, 4, and 7 d after application (DAA). Several analysis techniques including multiple indices, signature amplitude (SA) with spectral bands as features, and wavelet analysis were used to distinguish between herbicide-treated and nontreated plants. Classification accuracy using SA analysis of paraquat injury on soybean was better than 75% for both 1/2- and 1/8× rates at 1, 4, and 7 DAA. Classification accuracy of paraquat injury on corn was better than 72% for the 1/2× rate at 1, 4, and 7 DAA. These data suggest that hyperspectral reflectance may be used to distinguish between healthy plants and injured plants to which herbicides have been applied; however, the classification accuracies remained at 75% or higher only when the higher rates of herbicide were applied. Applications of a 1/2× rate of glyphosate produced 55 to 81% soybean injury and 20 to 50% corn injury 4 and 7 DAA, respectively. However, using SA analysis, the moderately injured plants were indistinguishable from the uninjured controls, as represented by the low classification accuracies at the 1/8-, 1/32-, and 1/64× rates. The most promising technique for identifying drift injury was wavelet analysis, which successfully distinguished between corn plants treated with either the 1/8- or the 1/2× rates of paraquat compared with the nontreated corn plants better than 92% 1, 4, and 7 DAA. These analysis techniques, once tested and validated on field scale data, may help determine the extent and the degree of herbicide drift for making appropriate and, more importantly, timely management decisions.

Application of non-selective herbicides during flowering of pasture legumes can reduce seed yield and alter seed characteristics

Summary. Spraytopping, the application of a low rate of non-selective herbicide (usually glyphosate or paraquat) to annual grass seed heads in the spring or early summer for seed set control is widely practised throughout Australia. While grasses are the targets of the spray treatment, annual pasture legumes may also be damaged by spraytopping, particularly if the legumes are flowering at the time of application. The effect of applying glyphosate (90, 112 or 162 g a.i./ha), paraquat (100 g a.i./ha) and glyphosate plus MCPA (90 + 150 g a.i./ha) to subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L. cv. Dalkeith) and annual medic (Medicago polymorpha L. cvv. Serena, Santiago and Circle Valley) pastures at various times during flowering was investigated during the spring of 1993 and 1994. Experiments were located at Tincurrin and Tenindewa, Western Australia. Subterranean clover seed yield was most affected by applications of glyphosate (90 and 162 g a.i./ha) and glyphosate plus MCPA (90 + 150 g a.i./ha) during early–mid flowering. Seed yield was reduced by as much as 88% following application of glyphosate plus MCPA when 20% of the subterranean clover plants were flowering. Treatment with paraquat (100 g a.i./ha) during mid–late flowering reduced seed yield of subterranean clover by 25–50% in experiment 1 only. Medic seed yield was reduced up to 90% depending on cultivar when glyphosate (112 g a.i./ha) was applied during early–mid flowering. In addition to seed yield, the level of hard seed was assessed. Treatment of subterranean clover during early–mid flowering with glyphosate (90 and 162 g a.i./ha) significantly reduced the quantity of hard seed produced. Thirty–forty percent of subterranean clover seed was germinable soon after seed set, compared with 7–17% germinable for the seed from untreated plants. Treatment with glyphosate (112 g a.i./ha) reduced the proportion of hard seed in the medics when applied during mid flowering. Treatment with paraquat had little effect on the proportion of hard seed formed. This work demonstrates that using a spraytopping technique for control of seed set in annual grasses may dramatically reduce seed yield in pasture legumes. Spraytopping can further reduce the ability of legumes to persist in cropping rotations by reducing the amount of hard seed formed. Implications for practical farming systems are outlined.

Common Lambsquarters (Chenopodium album) Control with Non-selective Herbicides

Field experiments were conducted to compare the timing of non-selective herbicide application on common lambsquarters under reduced tillage culture after wheat harvest. Common lambsquarters was controlled more effectively with herbicides applied to plants that were allowed to recover from removal of topgrowth during wheat harvest. When herbicides were applied immediately after wheat harvest, only glufosinate (HOE-39866) at the low and medium rates provided greater than 70% control.

Weed Control in Arid Southwest

The Rio Grande Project, New Mexico-Texas, maintaining over 1,000 miles of waterways, has found that a weed program of its size must utilize many methods of control and presently operates under a program which includes mechanical methods, burning and spraying operations of about equal magnitude. Specific problems involved are right-of-way encroachments, air and stream pollution, crop and crop land contamination, public endorsement, odors, and safety. General weed infestations include johnsongrass and curly dock in the distribution system with salt cedar and willow in the drainage system and reservoir areas. Basically, weed control in the distribution systems is accomplished with rotary mowers, propane burners and application of nonselective herbicides. Control of weeds in the drainage system is done with brush cutters, dragline and application of selective herbicides. Phreatophytes in reservoir areas and flood plains are maintained with rotary mowers, brush cutters and application of selective herbicides.
