Due to the significant challenges of growing global population and climate change, the agriculture and food industries are facing a continued demand for improving productivity. The integration of nanotechnology in food and agriculture has been envisioned to supply abundant alternative avenues for the crop improvement and food security. To meet these challenges, nanotechnology has made remarkable advancements in agricultural sciences, resulting in numerous beneficial impacts on crop yield and productivity. The key areas of nano-based agriculture aim to enhance food quality, optimized fertilizer doses, reduced agricultural inputs, and improved nutrient uptake by plants from the soil. Additionally, employing minimal hazardous agrochemicals, lowering fertilizer losses, solidification of soil and water quality, and managing nutrient supply efficiently are attributed to the advantages of nanomaterials. In future, the continued efforts and convergence of agriculture and nanotechnology offers promising benefits such as equipping plants with cutting-edge nanotools to combat abiotic (drought, salt, and temperature) and biotic (insects and diseases) stresses, precise and rapid diagnostics, and maximizing utilization of available resources. The ultimate goal in agricultural sciences is to achieve sustainable food production, which forms the backdrop for harnessing the properties of nanomaterials to enhance crop productivity and address widening growing climate challenges. In summary, the extensive applications of nanotechnology in agriculture are anticipated to support climate-smart crop cultivation.

Nano-Food Farming: Toward Sustainable Applications of Proteins, Mushrooms, Nano-Nutrients, and Nanofibers

The relationship between agriculture and food is very close. It is impossible to produce adequate crops for global food security without proper farm management. Farming practices represent direct and indirect controlling factors in terms of global food security. Farming management practices influence agro-food production from seed germination through to the post-harvest treatments. Nano-farming utilizes nanotechnologies for agricultural food production. This review covers four key components of nano-farming: nano-mushroom production, protein-based nanoparticles, nano-nutrients, and nanofibers. This provides a comprehensive overview of the potential applications of nanotechnology in agriculture. The role of these components will be discussed in relation to the challenges faced and solutions required to achieve sustainable agricultural production. Edible mushrooms are important to food security because they are a nutritious food source and can produce nanoparticles that can be used in the production of other food sources. Protein-based nanoparticles have considerable potential in the delivery of bioactives as carriers and other applications. Nano-nutrients (mainly nano-selenium, nano-tellurium and carbon nanodots) have crucial impacts on the nutrient status of plant-based foods. Carbon nanodots and other carbon-based nanomaterials have the potential to influence agricultural crops positively. There are promising applications of nanofibers in food packaging, safety and processing. However, further research is needed to understand the impacts and potential risks of nanomaterials in the food production system.

Efficient Use of Nano-fertilizer for Increasing Productivity and Profitability along with Maintain Sustainability in Rice Crop: A Review

Since rice is a staple diet for millions of people, novel methods are needed to increase yields without harming the environment. The possible advantages of using nano fertilizers in rice farming are examined in this abstract in order to raise yields, increase farmer profitability, and ensure long-term sustainability. Nano-sized carriers created for effective nutrient delivery to crops are called nano fertilizers, an innovative application of nanotechnology in agriculture. Their special qualities, such as their large surface area and regulated release mechanisms, allow for the targeted supply of nutrients to rice plants, improving nutrient uptake and utilization. Nano-fertilizers successfully optimize nutrient availability as a consequence, increasing crop output. According to studies, using nano fertilizers in rice farming increases grain yields because plants are better able to absorb and assimilate nutrients. The crop's resistance to environmental challenges and disease strains is strengthened as a result of this enhanced nutrient utilization, which also boosts yield and contributes to sustainable rice farming practices. Design and development of multi-functional graphitic carbon nitride heterostructures embedded with copper and iron oxide nanoparticles as versatile sensing platforms for environmental and agricultural applications

In the recent past, agrotechnology has witnessed a tremendous change due to the advent of technologies employed towards enhancing the yield and quality of the crops. The application of nanotechnology in agriculture is promoting sustainable practices and smart farming. Currently, nanomaterial-based sensors are gaining considerable attention in agrotechnology, such sensors can detect the environmental conditions and support for crop growth and enhances the agricultural yield. Graphiticcarbon nitride (g-C3N4), a soft polymer belongs to a class of 2-D semiconductors which are affordable, metal-free, indispensable for sensing applications due to significant changes in their conductivity upon exposure to analyte molecules in nano-regime. Further, this g-C3N4 can be combined with other nano metal oxides to form nanocomposites with remarkable properties and superior performance. In this work we report development of high-performance sensors based on graphitic carbon nitride embedded with copper and iron oxide nanoparticles. These heterostructures offers tremendous improvement in the physical and chemical properties due to the synergetic interactions between various phases. The chemiresistive sensor fabricated from these nanocomposites exhibit excellent sensitivity towards monitoring methane gas @ ppb level, relative humidity (% RH), and soil moisture content. Owing to their excellent sensitivity, stability and selectivity, this graphitic carbon nitride embedded with Cu and Fe oxide nanoparticles could be potentially used as multifunctional sensors towards environmental monitoring and greenhouse conditions in agricultural applications.

The strategic applications of natural polymer nanocomposites in food packaging and agriculture: Chances, challenges, and consumers' perception.

Natural polymer-based nanocomposites have received significant attention in both scientific and industrial research in recent years. They can help to eliminate the consequences of application of petroleum-derived polymeric materials and related environmental concerns. Such nanocomposites consist of natural biopolymers (e.g., chitosan, starch, cellulose, alginate and many more) derived from plants, microbes and animals that are abundantly available in nature, biodegradable and thus eco-friendly, and can be used for developing nanocomposites for agriculture and food industry applications. Biopolymer-based nanocomposites can act as slow-release nanocarriers for delivering agrochemicals (fertilizers/nutrients) or pesticides to crop plants to increase yields. Similarly, biopolymer-based nanofilms or hydrogels may be used as direct product coating to extend product shelf life or improve seed germination or protection from pathogens and pests. Biopolymers have huge potential in food-packaging. However, their packaging properties, such as mechanical strength or gas, water or microbial barriers can be remarkably improved when combined with nanofillers such as nanoparticles. This article provides an overview of the strategic applications of natural polymer nanocomposites in food and agriculture as nanocarriers of active compounds, polymer-based hydrogels, nanocoatings and nanofilms. However, the risk, challenges, chances, and consumers' perceptions of nanotechnology applications in agriculture and food production and packaging have been also discussed.

There is a sharp decline in Indian agricultural production from 3.6% in 1985- 1995 to nearly 2% in 1995- 2005. To reach the goal of 4% increment in agricultural production we must use sustainable agricultural practices keeping in view of the environment. Nanotechnology is emerged as a new solution which counters the growing harmful consequences of conventional farming techniques that neither increase the output nor bring the environment back to its original position. Nanotechnology uses different particle sizes varying from 1-100 nanometres and can deliver the nutrients precisely. The different applications of nanotechnology in agriculture like nano fertilizers, nano pesticides etc are gaining interest amongst farmers and scientists. This has the potential in reducing the chemical fertilizers and pesticides, in minimising nutrient loss via leaching and to enhance the yields through precise nutrient management, Nanotechnology is also utilised at various phases of agricultural practices like packaging, processing, storing, and agricultural goods transit. Food security, agriculture, and natural resources are important areas to focus on for sustainability, susceptibility, and human existence on this planet. Following the implementation of sustainable agriculture, the nanotechnology in agricultural fertilizers and pesticides is an encouraging and alternative solution to pest control and nutrient management. This paper gives brief information about how nanotechnology works and helps to overcome the problems related to agriculture.

As a result, this review concentrates on the synthesis and uses of nanoparticles in the food and agricultural industries. Despite several studies suggesting that nanoparticles have applications in the food and agriculture industries, more studies are needed to convey the significance of nanoparticles in these fields.

The application of nanotechnology in agriculture is a promising way to increase crop production and yield, reduce the amount of fertilizer, increase the storage time of the productions and protect the environmental sustainability. Soybean is one of the four important crops of Vietnam's agriculture and a source of food for humans and domestic animals. In this study, the effect of zerovalent cobalt nanoparticles with different concentrations (0; 0.17; 0.33 and 100 mg/kg seed) on chlorophyll a content and photosynthesis parameters of soybean plant Glycine max (L). Merr. DT96 which was planted in the autumn-winter crop in Xuan Hoa, Phuc Yen, Vinh Phuc were carried out. The obtained results showed that zerovalent cobalt nanoparticles had a positive effect on the photosynthetic parameters of soybean plants. At the used concentration of 0.33 mg cobalt/kg seed, the chlorophyll a content and photosynthetic parameters of soybean were the highest and there was a statistically significant difference compared with control. The chlorophyll a content tends to increase gradually and reaches the maximum value of 1.77 ± 0.05 mg/g fresh leaves after 40 days of sowing. The parameters related to chlorophyll fluorescence such as Fo (initial fluorescence), Fm (maximal fluorescence), Fv/Fm (maximal photochemical efficiency), effective quantum yield of photosystem II (FPSII), photosynthetic electron transport rate (ETR), Pn (net photosynthetic rate) of soybean seedlings which were treated by cobalt nanoparticles were higher than the control (except at the concentration of 100 mg/kg). The soybean seeds treated by cobalt nanoparticles had increased the chlorophyll a content of leaves and photosynthetic efficiency, leading to improve productivity of soybean.

The impact of nanofertilizer on agro-morphological criteria, yield, and genomic stability of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

The use of agricultural fertilizers is one of the methods to beat the desired enormous increase in universal food production. The application of nanotechnology in agriculture is regarded as one of the promising approaches to elevate crop production. Whereas mineral nutrients play a crucial role in the growth and yield of the common bean. The experiments were conducted to investigate the application effect of micronutrients as nanoparticles (MN-NPs) on the common ben plants. The trial was performed in the field in El-Menofya, Egypt, through two seasons (2019 & 2020) in a randomized complete block design with three replicates and four combinations of MN-NPs (ZnO, MnO2 and MoO3) with concentrations 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 mg/L as a foliar application. The data exhibited that the foliar application of MN-NPs significantly upgraded the vegetative growth characters, flower number/plant, photosynthetic pigments, and yield. The concentration of 40 mg/L of MN-NPs leads to improving the vegetative growth, flowering number, and yield characteristics of the common bean. While the biochemical components varied in their response to MN-NPs combinations. The recommended MN-NPs concentration to ameliorate the common bean growth and yield was 40 mg/L.

Nanofertilizers: A Smart and Sustainable Attribute to Modern Agriculture.

The widespread use of fertilizers is a result of the increased global demand for food. The commonly used chemical fertilizers may increase plant growth and output, but they have deleterious effects on the soil, the environment, and even human health. Therefore, nanofertilizers are one of the most promising solutions or substitutes for conventional fertilizers. These engineered materials are composed of nanoparticles containing macro- and micronutrients that are delivered to the plant rhizosphere in a regulated manner. In nanofertilizers, the essential minerals and nutrients (such as N, P, K, Fe, and Mn) are bonded alone or in combination with nano-dimensional adsorbents. This review discusses the development of nanotechnology-based smart and efficient agriculture using nanofertilizers that have higher nutritional management, owing to their ability to increase the nutrient uptake efficiency. Additionally, the synthesis and mechanism of action of the nanofertilizers are discussed, along with the different types of fertilizers that are currently available. Furthermore, sustainable agriculture can be realised by the targeted delivery and controlled release of nutrients through the application of nanoscale active substances. This paper emphasises the successful development and safe application of nanotechnology in agriculture; however, certain basic concerns and existing gaps in research need to be addressed and resolved.

Root Hair Apex is the Key Site for Symplastic Delivery of Graphene into Plants.

Uptake kinetics and delivery mechanisms of nanoparticles (NPs) in crop plants need to be urgently understood for the application of nanotechnology in agriculture as delivery systems for eco-friendly nanoagrochemicals. Here, we investigated the uptake kinetics, translocation pathway, and key internalization process of graphene in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) by applying three specific hydroponic cultivation methods (submerging, hanging, and split-root). Quantification results on the uptake of carbon-14 radiolabeled graphene in each tissue indicated that graphene could enter the root of wheat and further translocate to the shoot with a low delivery rate (<2%). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that internalized graphene was transported to adjacent cells through the plasmodesmata, clearly indicating the symplastic pathway of graphene translocation. The key site for the introduction of graphene into root cells for translocation through the symplastic pathway is evidenced to be the apex of growing root hair, where the newly constructed primary cell wall is much thinner. The confirmation of uptake kinetics and delivery mechanisms is useful for the development of nanotechnology in sustainable agriculture, especially for graphene serving as the delivery vector for pesticides, genes, and sensors.

Green nanopriming: responses of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) seedlings to alfalfa extracts capped and light-induced silver nanoparticles

The application of nanotechnology in agriculture can remarkably improve the cultivation and growth of crop plants. Many studies showed that nanoparticles (NPs) made plants grow more vigorously. Light can make NPs aggregated, leading to the reduction of the NPs toxicity. In addition, treatment with NPs had a “hormesis effect” on plants. In this study, light-induced silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized by using the alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) extracts, and then the optimal synthetic condition was determined. Light-induced AgNPs were aggregated, spherical and pink, and they were coated with esters, phenols, acids, terpenes, amino acids and sugars, which were the compositions of alfalfa extracts. The concentration of free Ag+ was less than 2 % of the AgNPs concentration. Through nanopriming, Ag+ got into the seedlings and caused the impact of AgNPs on alfalfa. Compared with the control group, low concentration of light-induced AgNPs had a positive effect on the photosynthesis. It was also harmless to the leaf cells, and there was no elongation effect on shoots. Although high concentration of AgNPs was especially beneficial to root elongation, it had a slight toxic effect on seedlings due to the accumulation of silver. With the increase of AgNPs concentration, the content of silver in the seedlings increased and the silver enriched in plants was at the mg/kg level. Just as available research reported the toxicity of NPs can be reduced by using suitable synthesis and application methods, the present light induction, active material encapsulation and nanopriming minimized the toxicity of AgNPs to plants, enhancing the antioxidant enzyme system.Graphical

Effects of nanofertilizer and nano-plant hormone on soil chemical properties and microbial community in two different soil types

Application of nanotechnology in agriculture has been expanded to improve crop production. The impact of nanomaterials (NMs) on factors that influence the survival and function of beneficial microorganisms is a less studied aspect that needs to be better understood. Only a few studies have assessed the effects of NMs on beneficial soil microorganisms. This study was conducted to assess the effects of nanofertilizer FertiGroe® N (FG-N) and nano-plant hormone HormoGroe® auxin (HG-A) on the chemical properties and microbial communities of two contrasting soils, Lipa clay loam (CL) and Sariaya sandy loam (SL), over a 35-d incubation period in the laboratory. Bacterial and fungal communities were evaluated using amplicon sequencing analysis within the 16S and internal transcribed spacer regions, respectively. The application of FG-N significantly decreased soil pH, but did not affect total N and available P for both soil types. A significant increase in exchangeable K was observed only in Lipa CL. The application of HG-A had no significant effect on soil chemical properties. Regarding the bacterial community after incubation, the relative abundances of Acidobacteriia, Chthonomonadetes, and Saccharimonadia decreased, whereas Acidimicrobiia, Chloroflexia, and Gemmatimonadetes increased with FG-N application in Lipa CL. The application of HG-A increased the relative abundance of Rubrobacteria, Chthonomonadetes, and Chloroflexia in Lipa CL. For the fungal community, FG-N application increased the relative abundance of Sordariomycetes, Agaricomycetes, and Eurotiomycetes, whereas Dothideomycetes and Mortierellomycetes decreased in Lipa CL after incubation. In Sariaya SL, FG-N application increased the relative abundance of Dothideomycetes, Eurotiomycetes, and Mortierellomycetes, but decreased that of Sordariomycetes and Agaricomycetes. Fungal classes observed in the control samples were not detected in the HG-A treatment, but were recovered after incubation in Lipa CL. The microbial diversity in both soil types showed slight changes with FG-N and HG-A application. Principal coordinate analysis illustrated the clustering of bacterial and fungal taxa between Lipa CL and Sariaya SL. Pearson correlation analysis showed that several bacterial and fungal communities were positively or negatively correlated with soil pH. The results suggest that FG-N can be safely used in crop production and HG-A may be used mainly for vegetative propagation.

Insights overview on the possible protective effect of chitosan nanoparticles encapsulation against neurotoxicity induced by carbendazim in rats

Carbendazim (CBZ) contamination of food and water is a principal factor in many negative impacts on public health. Nanoencapsulation of agrochemicals by nontoxic polymers as chitosan nanoparticles (CS-NPs) is one of the most applications of nanotechnology in agriculture. Despite its many advantages, such as it provides controlled release property, more stability and solubility of the active ingredient, it is not authorized to be used in the market because there are no adequate studies on the nano pesticides induced toxicity on experimental animals. So, we aim to study the possible impacts of CBZ-loading CS-NPs on the whole brain of rats and to explain its mechanism of action. 20 male Wistar rats were partitioned into 4 groups as follows: Group (1), normal saline; group (2), 5 mg/kg CS-NPs; group (3), 300 mg/kg CBZ; group (4) 300 mg/kg CS/CBZ-NCs. After 28 days, some neurobehavioral parameters were assessed to all rats then euthanization was done to collect the brain. Our results revealed that CBZ prompted neurotoxicity manifested by severe neurobehavioral changes and a significant increase of MDA with a decrease of GSH and CAT in brain tissue. In addition, there were severe neuropathological alterations confirmed by immunohistochemistry which showed strong bax, GFAP, and TNF-ὰ protein expression in some brain areas. CBZ also induced apoptosis manifested by up-regulation of JNK and P53 with down-regulation of Bcl-2 in brain tissue. Otherwise, encapsulation of CBZ with CS-NPs could reduce CBZ-induced neurotoxicity and improve all studied toxicological parameters. We recommend using CBZ-loading CS-NPs as an alternative approach for fungicide application in agricultural and veterinary practices but further studies are needed to ensure its safety on other organs.

It can be delineated as a physiological process of prompting plants by treating with biological/chemical priming agents or mild stress to display better growth biomarkers and stress resistance in case of repeated stress encounters. Priming of seeds has been of great interest for researchers in recent years which brings about changes in seed metabolism to support the successful establishment of plants in its environment through faster and more prominent seed germination and growth of developing seedlings. The conspicuously displayed rise in applications of nanotechnology in agriculture has also stirred up the research on nano-priming of plants. Nanoparticles (NPs) have appeared to be more proficient in influencing growth, quality, yield, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis in plant seeds than other methods of priming such as priming with the bulk materials or hydro-priming. However, there is a need to opt-out NPs exhibiting toxic effects on seed germination and seedling growth for deliberate priming while understanding their possible repercussions on plant as well as human health. Therefore, this article aims to present the recent research conducted in the field of nano-priming of seeds of different plants along with recommendations for future research.
