Application of High-Speed Photography in Amplitude Measurement of a Satellite Antenna

Spacecraft antenna is an antenna loaded on the spacecraft and an indispensable part of the spacecraft system. It is particularly important to measure the assembly accuracy of the antenna. A certain type of satellite needs to test the amplitude of antenna A and B in sinusoidal vibration test. Because the distance between antenna A and antenna B is very close to the fairing, it is necessary to measure the amplitude of antenna A to verify the spatial compatibility of antenna A with carrier fairing and antenna B in the test process. By comparing four kinds of antenna measurement technology, this paper chooses high-speed photography technology to measure the amplitude of the antenna, uses recognition processing computing technology to binarize the image, changes the image into calculable coordinate value, obtains the amplitude data of X-direction and Y-direction, and verifies the space composite compatibility requirements between antenna A, carrier fairing and antenna B under vibration conditions. There will be interference and collision.

High-strain rate Brazilian testing of an explosive simulant using speckle metrology

The application of high-speed photography and image correlation has allowed dynamic Brazilian tests to be carried out using the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) on PBS9501, an explosive simulant. The essential features of low-rate Brazilian tests are found to occur in the high-rate experiments, with the samples reaching equilibrium quickly and remaining in equilibrium throughout the experiment. The advantage of the approach described here is the ability to make tensile stress/strain measurements in the high-strain rate regime using a compression Hopkinson bar. This allows smaller sample sizes, making testing of expensive or dangerous materials easier, while expanding the capabilities of the compression bar.

The application of high speed photography and white light speckle to the study of dynamic fracture

A white light speckle technique is combined with high speed photography to study the dynamic fracture of a sample of PMMA. A series of single exposure speckle patterns are photographically recorded at the rate of 2 × 10 5 frames s -1 during fracture of the sample. The displacement field around the tip of the propagating crack may then be determined by superimposing pairs of individual frames to form a ‘double-exposure’ speckle pattern. It is shown that the method gives values for the stress intensity factor K which are consistent with those obtained from other techniques.

Application of High Speed Photography to the Photoelastic Analysis of Structural Stability Problems*

This paper contains the results of several investigations conducted by the author with photoelastic circular cylindrical shells under axial compression. The onset of instability and the subsequent buckling process have been analyzed using high speed photography to record change in the photoelastic isoclinic patterns. Both qualitative and quantitative results are presented concerning the inception of buckling which have never been achieved by other means. The application of high speed photography to the photoelastic analysis of some structural stability problems is demonstrated and results compared with reflected light techniques and mechanical measurements.

Applications of High-Speed Photography in Rocket Motor Research

Hazards and conditions in research on rocket engines have established high-speed photography as a useful tool. High-speed cameras have removed personnel and sensitive equipment from dangerous areas. The camera's independence of the rocket engine permits an unbiased record of firing behavior and often yields clues to anomalous occurrences not otherwise explainable. The application of high-speed photography to transparent rocket thrust chamber research is emphasized; some specialized variations of normal schlieren and shadowgraph techniques are described, as are the studies of hydraulic transients.
