Granular activated carbon stimulates biogas production in pilot-scale anaerobic digester treating agro-industrial wastewater

This work examines the continuous addition (5 g/L) of conductive granular activated carbon (GAC) in an integrated pilot-scale unit containing an anaerobic digester (180 L) and an aerobic submerged membrane bioreactor (1600 L) connected in series for the treatment of agro-industrial wastewater. Biogas production increased by 32 % after the addition of GAC. Methanosaeta was the dominant methanogen in the digester, and its relative abundance increased after the addition of GAC. The final effluent after post-treatment with the aerobic membrane bioreactor had a total solids content <0.01 g/L and a chemical oxygen demand between 120 and 150 mg/L. A simple cost analysis showed that GAC addition is potentially profitable, but alternatives ways of retaining the GAC in the system need to be found. Overall, this study provides useful scientific data for the possible application of GAC in full-scale biogas projects.

Application of solid waste as an adsorbent for capture of 137Cs, 85Sr and 131I from environmental water

ABSTRACT Caesium, strontium, and iodine radionuclides are produced from uranium fission and they are easily soluble in water through accidents or leakages, such as those occurred at Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and Fukushima. Thus, developing an economical and effective process for removing these radioisotopes from real water is a progressively important issue. Hence, adsorption of 137Cs, 85Sr, and 131I radionuclides was achieved using a solid waste adsorbent. The solid waste adsorbent is granular activated carbon (GAC) gained from the wasted household water filters. The gained data illustrated that the percentages of uptake for 137Cs, 85Sr, and 131I were 87.6, 85.6, and 82.7%, respectively. Application of GAC for the decontamination of real water as groundwater, river water, tap water, and seawater was achieved. The findings revealed that GAC has the ability to be employed effectively as a hopeful material for the decontamination of radioactive 137Cs, 85Sr, and 131I from the environmental water.

Efficient adsorptive removal of short-chain perfluoroalkyl acids using reed straw-derived biochar (RESCA)

Drinking water and groundwater treatment of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) heavily relies on adsorption-based approaches using carbonaceous materials, such as granular activated carbon (GAC). Application of GAC is restricted by its inefficiency to remove short-chain PFAAs that have prevalently emerged as substitutes and/or metabolites of long-chain polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Here, we synthesized reed straw-derived biochar (RESCA) exhibiting exceptional removal efficiencies (>92%) toward short-chain PFAAs at environment-relevant concentrations (e.g., 1 μg/L). Pseudo-second-order kinetic constants of RESCA were 1.13 and 1.23 L/(mg h) for perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) and perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS), respectively, over six times greater than GAC. SEM imaging and BET analysis revealed the combination of highly hydrophobic surface and scattered distribution of mesopores (2–10 nm in diameter) was associated with the rapid adsorption of short-chain PFAAs. RESCA-packed filters demonstrated effective removal of the mixture of three short-chain and three long-chain PFAAs in the influent with the flow rate up to 45 mL/min. In contrast, GAC-packed filters were significantly less efficient in the removal of short-chain PFAAs, which were also negatively affected by the increase of the flow rate. Efficacy of RESCA-packed filters was also validated in four PFAA-spiked groundwater samples from different sites. Dissolved organic matter (DOC) of >8 mg/L can negatively affect the removal of short-chain PFAAs by RESCA. Feasibility of scaling up the RESCA adsorption system was investigated using breakthrough simulation. Overall, RESCA represents a green adsorbent alternative for the feasible and scalable treatment of a wide spectrum of PFAAs of different chain lengths and functional moieties.

Combination of granular activated carbon adsorption and deep-bed filtration as a single advanced wastewater treatment step for organic micropollutant and phosphorus removal

Adsorption onto granular activated carbon (GAC) is an established technology in water and advanced wastewater treatment for the removal of organic substances from the liquid phase. Besides adsorption, the removal of particulate matter by filtration and biodegradation of organic substances in GAC contactors has frequently been reported. The application of GAC as both adsorbent for organic micropollutant (OMP) removal and filter medium for solids retention in tertiary wastewater filtration represents an energy- and space saving option, but has rarely been considered because high dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and suspended solids concentrations in the influent of the GAC adsorber put a significant burden on this integrated treatment step and might result in frequent backwashing and unsatisfactory filtration efficiency. This pilot-scale study investigates the combination of GAC adsorption and deep-bed filtration with coagulation as a single advanced treatment step for simultaneous removal of OMPs and phosphorus from secondary effluent. GAC was assessed as upper filter layer in dual-media downflow filtration and as mono-media upflow filter with regard to filtration performance and OMP removal. Both filtration concepts effectively removed suspended solids and phosphorus, achieving effluent concentrations of 0.1 mg/L TP and 1 mg/L TSS, respectively. Analysis of grain size distribution and head loss within the filter bed showed that considerable head loss occurred in the topmost filter layer in downflow filtration, indicating that most particles do not penetrate deeply into the filter bed. Upflow filtration exhibited substantially lower head loss and effective utilization of the whole filter bed. Well-adsorbing OMPs (e.g. benzotriazole, carbamazepine) were removed by >80% up to throughputs of 8000–10,000 bed volumes (BV), whereas weakly to medium adsorbing OMPs (e.g. primidone, sulfamethoxazole) showed removals <80% at <5,000 BV. In addition, breakthrough behavior was also determined for gabapentin, an anticonvulsant drug recently detected in drinking water resources for which suitable removal technologies are still largely unknown. Gabapentin showed poor adsorptive removal, resulting in rapid concentration increases. Whereas previous studies classified gabapentin as not readily biodegradable, sustained removal was observed after prolonged operation and points at biological elimination of gabapentin within the GAC filter. The application of GAC as filter medium was compared to direct addition of powdered activated carbon (PAC) to deep-bed filtration as a direct process alternative. Both options yielded comparable OMP removals for most compounds at similar carbon usage rates, but GAC achieved considerably higher removals for biodegradable OMPs. Based on the results, the application of GAC in combination with coagulation/filtration represents a promising alternative to powdered activated carbon and ozone for advanced wastewater treatment.

Comparison between sequential and simultaneous application of activated carbon with membrane bioreactor for trace organic contaminant removal

The removal efficiency of 22 selected trace organic contaminants by sequential application of granular activated carbon (GAC) and simultaneous application of powdered activated carbon (PAC) with membrane bioreactor (MBR) was compared in this study. Both sequential application of GAC following MBR treatment (MBR–GAC) and simultaneous application of PAC within MBR (PAC–MBR) achieved improved removal (over 95%) of seven hydrophilic and biologically persistent compounds, which were less efficiently removed by MBR-only treatment (negligible to 70%). However, gradual breakthrough of these compounds occurred over an extended operation period. Charged compounds, particularly, fenoprop and diclofenac, demonstrated the fastest breakthrough (complete and 50–70%, in MBR–GAC and PAC–MBR, respectively). Based on a simple comparison from the long-term performance stability and activated carbon usage points of view, PAC–MBR appears to be a better option than MBR–GAC treatment.

Advanced Treatment of Biotreated Textile Industry Wastewater with Ozone, Virgin/Ozonated Granular Activated Carbon and Their Combination

Biotreated textile wastewater (COD o = 248 mg L−1; TOC o = 58 mg L−1; A 620 = 0.007 cm−1; A 525 = 0.181 cm−1; A 436 = 0.198 cm−1) was subjected to advanced treatment with ozonation, granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption in serial and simultaneous applications. Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of applied ozone dose, ozone absorption rate, specific ozone absorption efficiency, GAC dose, and reaction pH on the treatment performance of the selected tertiary treatment scheme. In separate experiments, the impact of virgin GAC ozonation on its adsorptive capacity for biotreated and biotreated + ozonated textile effluent was also investigated. Ozonation appeared to be more effective for decolorization (k d = 0.15 min−1 at pH = 3), whereas GAC adsorption yielded higher COD removal rates (54% at pH = 3). It was also found that GAC addition (4 g/L) at pH = 7 and 9 enhanced the COD abatement rate of the ozonation process significantly and that the sequential application of ozonation (at pH = 3–11, 675 mg L−1 O3) followed by GAC adsorption (at pH = 3–7, 10 g L−1 GAC) resulted in the highest treatment performances both in terms of color and COD reduction. Simultaneous application of GAC and ozone at acidic and alkaline pH seriously inhibited COD abatement rates as a consequence of competitive adsorption and partial oxidation of textile components and GAC. It could also be established that ozone absorption efficiency decreased after color removal was complete. Ozonation of biotreated textile wastewater with 113 mg L−1ozone resulted in an appreciable enhancement of GAC adsorptive capacity in terms of residual color removal. Ozonation of GAC at relatively low doses (=10.8 mg/g GAC) did not improve its overall adsorption capacity.

Simulation of DOC Removal in Activated Carbon Beds

The removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by granular activated carbon (GAC) in a fixed-bed adsorber was simulated using an approximate analytical solution and was found to agree satisfactorily with the performance observed at a full-scale plant. Laboratory equilibrium isotherm studies were conducted to estimate the partition parameter and the nonadsorbable fraction of the organic matter. A modified linear isotherm model was found to fit the data acceptably. External and internal mass transfer parameters were based upon general correlations that have been widely applied in fixed-bed modeling. A mass transfer model based upon the assumption of pore diffusion was utilized to describe the intraparticle transport. An estimation of the biodegradable fraction of DOC was based upon numerous case studies of the application of GAC for water and wastewater treatment. The applicability of this approach was confirmed with operating data from three full-scale GAC adsorbers. The apparent diffusivities, both predicted and estimated from breakthrough data, were in the range of 6 x 10\u-¹¹ to 14 x 10\u-¹¹ square meters per second.
