A Review of GIS Technology Applications in Transportation Planning and Management

With the rapid development of the economy, the scale of urban construction is expanding, the corresponding transportation infrastructure is also improving, and the traffic congestion problem is becoming more and more serious. The application of GIS technology to transportation management can effectively alleviate the problem of urban traffic congestion at this stage, thus improving the operation of road traffic. This paper describes the advantages of GIS technology in transportation planning and management from the aspects of accuracy, measurement convenience, visualization, scientific, dynamic, data management, and introduces its application initiatives in road design, traffic prediction, vehicle guidance, traffic system design, traffic analysis. The application of GIS technology in transportation planning is becoming more and more extensive and profound, the technology can provide ideas and technical support for modern transportation planning, but also can combine the construction of road transportation system with information technology, effectively improve the rationality and scientificity of the transportation planning program, and play a positive and significant role in reducing traffic congestion and improving the efficiency of traffic operation.

Possibilities of Using Geoinformation Technologies in Epidemiological Surveillance of COVID-19 Infection at the Regional Level

Relevance. The spread of the new coronavirus infection throughout the world has led to expressed interest in studying, among other things, the patterns of territorial distribution of cases of the disease. Aim. To investigate the spatial distribution of cases of COVID-19 infection and develop proposals for the use of GIS technologies in the epidemiological supervision system for the new coronavirus infection at the regional level. Materials and methods. The study was conducted on the territory of the closed administrative- territorial entity of Zelenogorsk, Krasnoyarsk Territory. 4176 cases of COVID-19 infection were reported during the study period of 57 weeks (04/12/2020 to 06/18/2021). Each case of the disease was geocoded by the residence of the sick person using a projection coordinate system from the open data of the Open Street Map resource. The spatial distribution of COVID-19 cases was studied with geographic information system QGIS Desktop version 3.28.0. Spatial autocorrelation analysis was carried out using the Getis-Ord index. Results. During the application of GIS technologies, the density of distribution of COVID-19 infection cases was estimated, six zones with an average core density were discovered, the outbreaks in the northern part of the city had the greatest epidemiological significance. When assessing the clustering of cases within the specified territorial zones, eleven clusters were identified, three of which were characterized by the highest density of cases - 1210.1 cases per 1 sq. km, 1155.9 and 1116.7 cases per 1 sq. km. The Getis-Ord index value ranged from 0.00 to 2.576, the majority of cases was recorded in territorial clusters located in the northern part of the city. Conclusions. New knowledge obtained on the basis of modern GIS technologies about the presence of “hot spots” or clusters in the administrative territory will make the adjustment of preventive measures in micro-areas with a high prevalence of infection possible and develop strategies for more effective control of COVID-19 infection.

Landslide risk management using geospatial technique: comparative insights of China and Indonesia

Landslides are defined as the movement of soil and rocks that form slopes. Landslides can cause environmental damage, property losses, and deaths for people in disaster-prone areas. This study aims to review and compare landslide risk management patterns in China and Indonesia from research conducted in 2019-2023. The method used in this study is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). While searching for literature using Scopus, Mendeley has a publication period of 2019-2023. The research findings show that disaster risk management also focuses on more than community knowledge in disaster emergency response. However, other elements need attention, namely road sections most vulnerable to landslides, slope conditions, river density, land use, GIS, resources, community participation, and training. In Fengjie County, China, landslide vulnerability is a significant problem, with about 70% of areas in the vulnerability zone very high. In Pengasih Sentolo district, Indonesia, nine villages are included in the very high-risk site, showing significant landslide vulnerability. The integration and application of GIS technology have greatly assisted in assessing landslide susceptibility and identifying high-risk zones. Conclusion: The case study in Fengjie County, China and the study in Pengasih Sentolo District, Kulon Progo, Indonesia, emphasize the importance of using geospatial techniques, particularly GIS, for landslide risk assessment.

Classification of sustainability potential of genetic resources of local grapevine varieties in Serbia

The starting point for every viticultural and wine-producing country with respect to local grapevine varieties is their identification, inventory, preservation and development of genetic resources of those varieties. There are currently 224 grapevine va?rieties cultivated in Serbia for the purpose of commercial production of grapes and wine. Out of that number, 31 wine varieties are local. Vineyards under those varieties can be dif?ferentiated by their importance for production of grapes and wine, and by the level of their endangerment, that is, sustainability in conditions caused by climate changes. This paper presents the creation, that is, the modeling of the Method for Vineyard Sustainability Clas?wine grapevine varieties on grounds of their endangerment and sustainability, based on 20 examined and categorized individual vineyard sustainability parameters; to carry out comsification (MVSC). The purpose of MVSC classification is: to valorize vineyards with local prehensive classification into one of the four established vineyard sustainability classes (Class A - very endangered vineyards, Class B - endangered vineyards, Class C - sustainable vineyards and Class D - very sustainable vineyards); spatial identification and presentation of vineyards based on determined vineyard sustainability class through application of GIS technology; and finally, application of Network Analysis (NA), prioritization of examined parameters and, therefore, vineyards. A total of 10,402 vineyards under local grapevine wine varieties were used for modeling, and it was determined that 29 vineyards with the total surface of 1.2 hectares should be classified in Class A, while 2,883 vineyards with the total surface of 158.2 hectares should be classified in Class B. With respect to the strength of 20 individual vineyard sustainability parameters, it was determined that the parameter Structure of the vine rootstock (SVR) has the greatest impact, and priority in selection of vineyards in different sustainability classes should be given to vineyards without rootstocks. In accordance with the scientific justification of obtained results, the MVSC enables comprehensive clas?sification of the potential for sustainability of genetic resources of local grapevine varieties in Serbia, and it can be applied in other countries and wine-growing areas, as well as to other groups of grapevine varieties.

Application of GIS technologies for accounting plus trees

Introduction 
 Nowadays, an important forest genetic resources (FGR) conservation activity is the systematization of information on gene pool conservation units in electronic databases. It should be noted, however, that the existing international databases mainly relate only to units represented by populations (stands), which are visualized as polygons on the map. As the scientists from the Department of New Information Technologies in URIFFM have implemented the website “Geoportal: Forests of Ukraine”, it became technically possible to add information on plus trees to its functionality and combine data on tree locations and their characteristics in a united electronic database.
 The study aimed to improve the organization of information on plus trees, their accounting, survey, and use as improvement units by applying free software (Python, JavaScript) and the PostgreSQL relational database with the PostGIS module.
 Materials and Methods
 In 2021, one of the work stages was to develop software and methodology for forming the Plus Trees database and to provide a user manual. In particular, a data schema was created to store both attribute and geographical information on tree improvement units in Ukraine. In addition, attribute and geographical information of forest inventory are used. The database of plus trees contains basic information from plus tree Passports or selection/inventory data from the reports.
 Results 
 The proposed database consists of several panels. The first panel contains elements for setting coordinates and entering plus tree numbers. The second panel is intended for selecting a species name of trees. The third panel of the data entry form contains mandatory attributes (total height of a plus tree and its diameter at a height of 1.3 m). The fourth panel contains other tree characteristics.
 During the testing of the developed database structure and the working out of the instruction, the information on plus trees in seven regions of Ukraine (Kharkiv, Poltava, Sumy, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk, and Donetsk) was entered, which is about 25% of the country’s plus tree pool. In addition, the design of the web pages was finalized in parallel with the data entry.
 The developed software can be useful to both scientists and forest managers. Its use will simplify the search for plus trees in forest stands for their inventory, and survey, as well as in cases where it is necessary to collect seeds or cuttings for the seed orchards or progeny tests creation in forest enterprises or at forest seed centers. For scientists, it will provide an opportunity to systematize, analyze, and generalize information, in particular, to improve methodical approaches to the selection of the plus trees.
 Conclusions 
 A data schema was created to store both attribute and geographic information on forest tree species tree improvement units in Ukraine. The schema considers the complex structure of coordinated units and includes the developed algorithms for data verification which will allow the effective use of the proposed database for the plus tree accounting.

Application of GIS technologies in surveying the state of forest crops in the green zone of Astana

When carrying out forestry, constant monitoring of plant condition and growth is very important. There is a wide range of Earth remote sensing sources for effective management of woody vegetation in vast areas. The purpose of the study was to identify areas with weekened and dying tree crops in the green observation zone of Astana, Kazakhstan, covering Batys forestry using remote sensing data. The results of studies carried out for research on the growth and development of artificial plantations were obtained. During the experiment, a comparison of remote sensing data was performed using an unmanned aerial vehicle Supercam S350F with multispectral camera Micasense RedEdge and high-resolution measurements obtained with Sentinel-2 and PlanetScope satellites in order to select a method for solving the tasks. Based on the materials of multispectral diagnostics, the state of forest plantations in Batys forestry was revealed, where 35 % of tree crops were classified as healthy, 30 % - as weakened, and 35 % - as dying.

The regional monitoring of territorial differences in population morbidity of circulatory system diseases

The actual problem of health care in many regions of Russia are cardiovascular diseases. The valuation and monitoring study of prevalence of this class of diseases was implemented in the Kamchatka Kray. The study was based on official statistic data of general morbidity of adult and children population with circulatory system diseases in 2010-2021. The application of GIS-technologies permitted to implement territorially differentiated evaluation and monitoring of prevalence of circulatory system diseases. The increase of indicators and percentage of circulatory system diseases in the structure of general morbidity of adults was established. The children population of the region is characterized by decreasing of indicators of morbidity of cardio-vascular diseases. The space-time discontinuity of prevalence of these diseases in territories of the Kamchatka Kray. The study results were visualized in series of cartograms. The situation with cardio-vascular morbidity in the Kamchatka Kray has territorial differences: increased level of morbidity in central and distant regions and decreased one south regions. The obtained information can be applied in implementation of regional project of struggle with cardio-vascular diseases.

The use of geoinformation technologies in tourism organization

The article discusses aspects of the application of geoinformation systems in the tourism business. The rational use of tourism resources in the modern world is becoming an increasingly complex and urgent task. Software in geographic information systems enables people engaged in the tourism business to easily integrate and use available sources of tabular and cartographic information to improve the quality of decisions. Modern geoinformation technologies can be used in organizing and stimulating tourist activity. The main problem in this activity is the lack of information about the area in which the organization of tourism is carried out. We must take into account the terrain, the availability of recreation areas. If tourism is organized, then you need to know the locations of hotels, as well as attractions in the area of the route. If we are dealing with individual travel, it is necessary to know the schedule of transport, rates of hotel rooms, etc. Tourism is one of the industries that have used GIS in their development. The result was the mass application of GIS technology in solving many current and strategic tasks of this area of activity. It should be noted that geoinformation systems will help not only the organizers of the tourism business of the region, but also end users. The tourism business requires improving the quality of management and monitoring of natural and cultural resources, improving the perception of geoinformation in an accessible form for the user. The application of geoinformation technologies for the development of hiking, water and mountain tourism is discussed. Specific geoportals developed for the areas of the Caucasian State Biosphere Reserve, East Kazakhstan region, Astrakhan region are considered. It can be noted that recently there has been an active integration of geoinformation systems and tourism business, which brings great benefits to both tourism and geoinformatics.

Territorial and administrative division of the left bank of the Volga River (side of Prince Fedor Borisovich) of the Rzheva Volodimerova district in the first quarter of the XVII century.: application of GIS technologies.

The object of the study is the volosts and camps of the left bank of the Volga River (half of Prince Fyodor Borisovich) of the Rzhev Volodimerov district in the first quarter of the XVII century. The main source in this work is the scribal and boundary book of Rzheva Volodimerova "Prince Fedorov's sides of Borisovich" letters and measures of Leonty Skobeltsyn and the clerk Makar Chukarin 1624-1625. In total, the source provides information on 2,691 toponyms. The subject of the study included the localization and characteristics of the geography of the volosts, the allocation of "assigned" ones from other counties among them, the identification of the causes and chronology of their entry into the Rzhev Volodimerov county, the study of the dynamics of the development of the territory of the county from the end of the XV century to the 1620s. The work was carried out using geoinformation technologies based on the methodology of localization of toponyms of scribal description with using sources of the XVIII-XIX centuries. The use of geoinformation technologies in the work on the continuous localization of toponyms of the scribal description of the county allowed us to get a more detailed idea of the location of the administrative boundaries of volosts and camps. Such a feature of the territorial organization of the county as the interlaced location of the lands of a number of volosts and camps has been revealed. The vagueness of some internal boundaries of the county is a reflection of the instability of its territorial organization, due to the dynamics of population and land ownership during the XVI-XVII centuries. Among the causes of this phenomenon are border conflicts, oprichnina, and ruin during the period of Troubles. The work with the assembly material allowed us to establish the key role of the oprichnina in increasing the size of the territory of the county in the second half of the XVI century. Thus, the results obtained became the basis not only for clarifying the boundaries of the county of the XVII century, but also for their formation in historical dynamics during the late XV – XVI centuries.

The Application of GIS Technology in the Construction of Smart City

At present, China's urbanization process is accelerating, urban pressure is gradually increasing, and urban problems are becoming more and more serious. The GIS technology based on the powerful analysis function of computer provides a new solution and response strategy for the construction of smart cities. This paper focuses on the application of GIS technology in smart city construction, mainly involving the construction of GIS technology platform, resource integration, smart transportation, urban planning and emergency management. And the role of 3D visualization, spatial analysis and real-time data sharing based on GIS in the process of smart city construction, and on this basis, the future GIS industry is prospected.

The Concept of a Georeferential Spatial Database of Topographic–Historical Objects (GSDoT-HO): A Case Study of the Cadastral Map of Toruń (Poland)

In this study, we aimed to further the international discussion on the methodology of applying GIS technology to the editing of large-scale cadastral maps, taking the experience of editing the cadastral map of Toruń from 1910–1915 as an example. We present the concept of building a georeferential spatial database of topographic–historical objects (GSDoT-HO), which includes the stages involved in creating the database, its exemplary structure, and a proposal of good practices in this process, which were developed in the course of previous projects using a geographic information system for Historical Atlases of Polish Towns. Our works included the scanning, calibration, and rectification of a total of 178 sheets of cadastral maps (including 154 sheets of the map of Toruń and 24 sheets of the cadastral map of the then-village of Mokre) at differentiated scales of 1:250, 1:500, 1:1000, and 1:2000. Finally, in the process of vectorization, vector and attribute data were acquired, which made up the final result in the form of GSDoT-HOs. This database was created out of seven information layers with linear or polygon geometries, including the two most important layers, i.e., plots and buildings, which for the then-area of the city of Toruń, contained approximately 5800 and 10,800 vectorised polygon objects, respectively. This article shifts the focus of the discussion of standards in the use of GIS technology to edit Historic Towns Atlases from the development of interactive maps to the construction of a database that should enable comparative studies of urban spaces.

Application of GIS technologies in the improvement of geodetic and cartographic works in land cadastre

Increasing the accuracy of geodetic measurement tools and methods used in land surveying, topographic mapping, and other works is one of the requirements of the current era. In this case, it is important to develop measures aimed at increasing the speed of geodetic surveying, increasing the accuracy of measuring land areas, and reducing labour productivity, time, and human resource costs. The use of electronic geodetic measuring devices in implementing these works is very convenient for implementing the above requirements. The difference between the current electronic geodetic measuring instruments and the previous ones is that they are designed to measure the angle, distance, and height of points simultaneously.

Shaping a Strategy for Developing Applications of GIS Tools for the Smart City

The article deals with the application of GIS in different types of cities. The development of GIS technology is opening up new applications. In addition to the collection and cartographic visualisation of data, higher-level information functions such as automatic analysis, control, spatial planning or decision support can be realised. GIS technology can also be used to visualise abstract spaces. The article deals with the application of GIS in different types of cities. The article is intended to be the result of an analysis of the direction of the use of GIS technology in public administration in Poland. For this purpose, a model was developed to examine the state of GIS technology application. Two criteria were used to determine the state: groups of factors influencing the use of GIS technology (organisational, functional, informational and technical) and the level of maturity of GIS tools. Four levels were distinguished (from zero, i.e. no application of GIS technology, to a third level indicating the strategic importance of the tools studied). To this end, an empirical study was developed to determine the level of maturity of the application of the tools in question. After analysing the results, it can be concluded that the systems studied are still evolving. From the perspective of the proposed model, it can be assumed that the development of GIS tools has reached the second level in most of the surveyed offices. However, it will still be difficult to develop the software if not all the currently available GIS software capabilities are used.

Application of GIS technologies in the investigation of soil salinity

Soil salinization is the major problem affecting the productivity of irrigated lands. In Uzbekistan, irrigated area amounts to 4.5 million hectares or about 10% of Uzbekistan’s total area and almost 46.6% of these lands are affected by increasing salinity. The main reason for these conditions of irrigated land is the effect caused by natural factors (primary salinity) - inefficient natural drainage, saline groundwater, high evapotranspiration rates, and high capillary capacity of the soil. Moreover, human-induced processes (so-called “secondary salinity”), which lead to the enrichment of mineralization of groundwater. The objectives of this study iarethe soil salinity monitoring of irrigated lands and the mapping of the temporal and spatial distribution of salt-affected soils for the Arnasay district of Jizzakh province in Uzbekistan to support land management. Field data collected in 2017- 2018 was analyzed and based on the analysis soil map was developed. In the research area, based on these maps changes in soil salinity were identified. The results indicate that inefficient irrigation activities in the region would affect to the enrichment of salts in the top soils and reduce soil productivity. The GIS technologies are efficient tools for monitoring salt-affected lands.

Application of GIS technologies to implement environmental monitoring of laboratory studies of soils under power transmission lines in the Southern foothills of Fergana region

Aim: The purpose of the study is to introduce GIS technologies and create digital maps of irrigated soils, databases for soil surveys and agrochemical properties of lands of protected zones of linear objects of the Fergana region, as well as to determine the influence of power lines on wheat yield. Methods: The article uses methods of spatial and system-structural analysis, cartographic, comparative-geographical, statistical, typological and natural-economic zoning. They are based on GIS technologies using modern technological software, such as ArcGIS 10.3(2), and SAS Planet 1.3. Mathematical statistical processing of research results was carried out based on the IRRISTAT program. Results: based on the new modernized method, irrigated soils of farms under power lines were evaluated, and digital attribute bonus maps were compiled. Scientifically-based recommendations aimed at improving soil properties and efficient use of land resources have been developed. Conclusion: Based on the results of research conducted based on GIS technologies, ArcGIS applications and the rules of direct genetic soil science, the influence of high-voltage electrical networks on the properties of the soil of electromagnetic fields and protection limits were determined. The definition of areas in the study area, the establishment of boundaries, the definition of zones of impact and protection of high-voltage electrical networks, the analysis of agrophysical, agrochemical and other soil properties, the ways of using attribute data from individual modern GIS technologists and ArcGIS applications have been improved and appropriate maps have been compiled.

Application of GIS technologies for improving the content of the tourist map of Fergana province, Uzbekistan

This article contains proposals and recommendations for the creation and future development of interactive-dynamic maps of the Fergana province of the Republic of Uzbekistan through ArcGIS online software and cloud technologies. The experience of tourism geography and cartography, as well as the methodology of creating tourist maps, for creating interactive-dynamic maps, are explained. Selection of software tools for creating an interactive-dynamic tourist map using modern geographic information systems, mapping, creation of digital cartographic bases, and vectorization of the Raster MAR image with the help of manual placement of the map is shown through the MapInfo map system. A 1:750000 scale tourist map of the province was created based on the scientific results obtained on the economic and geographical features of tourism development in Fergana province. On the basis of the map, the possibility of determining the specialization of tourist regions in Fergana province and effectively using the potential of the regions has been revealed. Also, the system of marking objects displayed in the technology of creating maps, which is closely related to their content, and the principle of consistency have been preserved.

Application of GIS technologies for engineering geodynamic zoning of mountain territories

The lack in practise of applying special engineering-tectonic studies in the course of standard engineering surveys does not allow us to fully take into account the features of engineering-geological conditions of mountainous territories.In the work for the section of the Black Sea coast from Gelendzhik to Tuapse, which is part of the Afipsko-Defanovskaya orographic stage, a detailed study of discontinuous structures was carried out using cartographic constructions. The use of the GIS technology tool made it possible to carry out an overlay analysis of maps of morphometric indicators, as well as to draw up a diagram of tectonic blocks. The results showed good convergence with the data obtained earlier on a smaller scale. This provided the basis for zoning the territory according to the degree of favorability of engineering and tectonic conditions with the involvement of morphometric and tectonic features. The study of this territory was conducted for the first time and contributes to the clarification of its neotectonic structure, expanding the scope of application of structural and geomorphological methods based on GIS technologies in engineering and geological research.

Application of GIS technology in cross-border tourism cooperation planning

Object: The emphasis in this paper is put on the use and importance of GIS technology in tourism. This paper takes the spatial pattern of cross-border tourism cooperation in the Altai Mountains region as the research object. Methods: The research methods are: the terrain analysis, three-dimensional scene simulation, data statistics, suitability analysis, visual domain analysis, transportation network analysis, and project site selection of GIS technology in tourism planning. Findings: The presented research is analytical in nature. The specific application of GIS technology in tourism planning is discussed. Also, 7 types of GIS applications were considered in the paper. In summary, GIS is mainly composed of data input system, data management system, spatial analysis system and data output system. Conclusions: The results of a study of the landscape features of Altai Mountains using GIS technologies prove that the tourist capabilities of the region provide an excellent opportunity to create an international cross-border tourist point. In addition, the full use of GIS technologies in tourism planning can significantly increase the scientific, urgency and efficiency of planning. This is one of the most important directions for the future development of tourist planning.
